Peter Malnati: Golf fans 'sick' of LIV contracts, PGA Tour purses and money dominating men's game
PGA Tour Policy Board member Peter Malnati has discussed his emotional win at the Valspar Championship and why it resonated so much with golf fans; watch Malnati in action at the Houston Open live on Thursday from 12.30pm on Sky Sports Golf

Peter Malnati insists golf should return to focusing on storylines on the course and believes fans are "sick" of the money narrative currently dominating the professional game.
Malnati captured the interest of the sporting world with his two-stroke victory over Cameron Young at the Valspar Championship on Sunday, where he was reduced to tears after completing his first PGA Tour victory since 2015.
The 36-year-old's success came days after he and other members of the PGA Tour Policy Board attended a meeting with representatives from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which bankrolls the LIV Golf League, as talks to unify the men's game continue.

Money has frequently been a discussion point in recent years, with players making high-value moves to the LIV Golf League and the PGA Tour making significant improvements to its prize purses, leading to Malnati understanding why his victory resonated so much with fans.
"We can all probably remember when we were kids, and we were all kids at different times, but the things that moved us that we watched," Malnati said ahead of the Texas Children's Houston Open, live from Thursday on Sky Sports .

"I remember watching [Michael] Jordan and the '97 [Chicago] Bulls, I remember watching Tiger [Woods] in the 2000 Masters. I didn't care one iota what Jordan's contract was. I didn't care one iota what the winner's cheque at the US Open was. I think people are sick of that.
"I think people are just sick of the narrative in golf being about, you know, contracts on LIV, purses on the [PGA] Tour, guaranteed comp on the PGA Tour. I think people are so sick of that.

"They want to see people who are the best in the world at what they do it at a high level and celebrate that, celebrate the athleticism, celebrate the achievement.
"Obviously this is a business and to the top players who drive a lot of the value in this business, we've got to compensate them fairly. I think we're doing that above and beyond, and the narrative, the storylines, the conversation needs to come back to the product on the course and what we do.

"I just feel like no kid when they were watching Jordan dreamed of having his salary, they didn't care about that. They dreamed of being in that moment, hitting that shot. I think that's what our fans care about too and that's what they want to see.
"I hope those tears that I was crying on that 18th green had nothing to do with my share of that, what was it, an $8.4m purse last week. My tears had nothing to do with my share of that.
"I'm going to enjoy it and we're going to use it to do a lot of good in this world, but it had nothing to do with that. And I don't think our fans care about that either. I hope that connected with some people and I do think everyone out here who plays and competes would agree with me on that.
"I just hope that the story that we tell can come back to the best athletes in the world competing on the biggest stage in the world and doing it to show off this amazing skill that we have that can be so entertaining for people. I want that to be our story."

Liv golf's phil mickelson, caleb surratt raid pga tour caddie yard for two veterans, share this article.
LIV Golf’s Phil Mickelson and Caleb Surratt have dipped into the PGA Tour caddie ranks for not one but two regular caddies, sources tell Golfweek .
Mickelson announced on social media that his younger brother, Tim, who had served as his caddie for the past eight years including during the 2021 PGA Championship victory at Kiawah, has retired as his caddie . But he didn’t name a replacement. Golfweek has learned that veteran caddie Jon Yarbrough will be on the bag starting next week at the LIV Golf Miami event and the following week at the Masters.
Yarbrough, who has caddied for more than 20 years and for Scott Stallings for the past decade, won’t be on the bag for him this week at the Tour event in Houston. Yarbrough has previously caddied for the likes of Gary Woodland, Bill Haas, Smylie Kaufman and on the LPGA for Kelly Robbins, Morgan Pressel and Suzann Pettersen. Stallings, 39, made the Tour Championship in 2022 but is winless since the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open and has missed the cut in five of eight starts this season. Stallings is expected to have his swing coach on his bag this week. According to a source, Stallings and Yarbrough are very close, but the amount of guaranteed money offered “was incredible.” Reached via phone, Yarbrough declined to comment.

That’s not the only LIV Golf caddie change. Caleb Surratt, who signed with LIV out of Tennessee earlier this year and joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII, has wooed Brian Dilley, another veteran Tour caddie, who had been on the bag of Akshay Bhatia, to take over for him. Dilley is tight with Adam Hayes, the caddie for Rahm, and likely had a role in linking Surratt and Dilley together.
“I’m still learning, growing, and working on everything that I’m beginning to see what I need as a player in order to grow and be able to compete to the highest level, and I think Brian Dilley‘s gonna be able to help me get to that point,” Surratt wrote via text of Dilley, who has worked with Aaron Wise, Billy Horschel, and the LPGA’s Gerina Piller, among others. “He has caddied at an extremely high-level for longer than I’ve been alive, and undoubtably will be a great set of eyes to have on my golf game. Everyone on my team around me, speaks very highly of him, and I’m very excited to get to work with him in the coming weeks. It’s been a very enjoyable ride so far, and I’m excited to keep learning myself, and learning professional golf game, and eventually grow to be one of the best players in the world.”
So, while the defections to LIV may have stopped for the time being as negotiations between the Tour and PIF linger , it hasn’t stopped the league from raiding the Tour caddie yard.

FPO LOOKAHEAD
Five storylines to keep your eye on heading into Championship Sunday.
Kristin Tattar’s Historic Quest
Defending champion Kristin Tattar is at the center of the 2024 USWDGC narrative. With an unparalleled run, Tattar has dominated the FPO for the last year, winning the last five FPO Majors—a first in disc golf history (Juliana Korver won 5 FPO Majors in a row that she played, but she skipped on Major in that run). Tattar’s potential victory at the 2024 USWDGC would mark an unprecedented sixth consecutive FPO Major win, further solidifying her status as one of the sport’s all-time greats. Tattar’s performance is not just about quantity; her quality of play has been equally impressive. A win this weekend would tie her with Des Reading for the fewest number of Major starts to reach seven wins (16).
Ohn Scoggins’s Pursuit of Major Glory
Ohn Scoggins, another athlete to watch, is hunting for her first FPO Major victory. Fresh off a record-setting victory at Austin with an event rating of 1029—the highest FPO event rating ever recorded—Scoggins’s form suggests she’s a strong contender. Her 11-stroke victory, the largest margin of the season, alongside her consistency at the USWDGC with two podium finishes in the last two years, positions her as a formidable challenger. Scoggins already has 5 FP40 (age-protected) PDGA Major wins, so all signs point to her having a real shot in Texas this weekend.
The Return of Paige Pierce
Five-time USWDGC winner Paige Pierce makes her much-anticipated return to the Major stage, recovering from an ankle break last year. Pierce’s history of dominance at US Women’s, highlighted by shooting the highest rated FPO Major round of all time at the 2021 USWDGC (1024 rated), ensures she cannot be overlooked. Her drive to increase her record of most FPO wins at US Women’s Championship adds an exciting dynamic to the competition this weekend.
Missy Gannon’s Ascent
Missy Gannon is also in the hunt for her first Major title. With a third-place finish at Austin and a 1004-rated performance at the 2023 PDGA Pro Worlds—the highest-rated FPO Major loss and the fifth-highest FPO Major event rating all-time—Gannon is peaking at the right moment. Is it finally time for her to get the Major monkey off her back? Only time will tell.
Statistical Highlights and the Field
The 2024 USWDGC marks its 26th year as a Major, featuring a field size of 102 players. The course at Austin Beerworks Sprinkle Valley promises to test the field, potentially adding to the championship’s storied playoff history. With the event’s growth, the 2024 edition showcases 51 players rated 920+ and an average player rating of 917, reflecting the increasing competitiveness and skill level in women’s professional disc golf.

Wolstenholme ready to take on Moscow
August 16, 2018.
Gary Wolstenholme is preparing himself for ‘a test of golf' at Moscow Country Club with the VTB Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) set to get under way on Friday.
- Getty Images
And Wolstenhome, a three-time winner on the Staysure Tour, has played Moscow Country Club on two previous occasions and he is relishing the chance to tackle a course which he believes is in better condition than ever.
“This is the third time I've been here and I've become more impressed with the golf course as I've played it,” said Wolstenholme. “I think the golf course is definitely in a lot better condition than when we were here three or four years ago.
“The weather's been very difficult, so the green staff have had to work very hard to make this such a good venue. The design of the golf course is an extremely good test.
“It's long and it creates a test for players to play both right-to-left and left-to-right shots which, if you're a golfer, you appreciate that creates more of a test in itself.
“I think the course lends itself to long hitting, especially with the weather that we had last night as the course is pretty long anyway.
“Magnus P Atlevi, Stephen Dodd, Phil Price, from Wales, and Phil Golding, who won at London Golf Club recently, all stand out to me as having a chance to do well, but golf being golf, who knows? I might even do well! It's such a good test, I think only a very good player will do well here.”
Golf is an emerging sport in Russia and Moscow Country Club is at the forefront of the quest to encourage more of the country's natives to start playing.
Wolstenhome, GB&I's record points scorer at the Walker Cup who also received an MBE in 2007 for services to golf, has outlined both what he thinks is needed to grow the game, and some of the benefits which accompany it.
“To me, I think driving ranges are the future as far as giving people an opportunity to play the game,” he said.
“Short golf is the future, as are par three tournaments and things like that. To me, that's where we can get golf going in the future.
“Golf has the opportunity to be able to cross dividing lines, whether it's social or cultural. The great thing about golf is wherever you go in the world – and there are golf courses everywhere – from war-torn areas to the most affluent areas in the world, you transcend that.
“You can have somebody who is the lowest of the low from the point of view of not earning a great amount of money to multi-millionaires. You share that enjoyment of what is actually an incredibly difficult sport.”
Joining Wolstenholme in Russia this week is Staysure PGA Seniors Championship winner Philip Golding, Order of Merit Number Five Phillip Price, WINSTONgolf Senior Open champion Stephen Dodd and 1989 European Tour Number One Ronan Rafferty
The action begins in Russia on Friday August 17, with José Manuel Carriles and Jean Pierre Sallat the first group to tee off at 8.00am local time (BST+2).
