Tourism Jobs Abroad

Why find tourism jobs abroad?

For those addicted to travel, tourism jobs abroad are often the first and most natural career choice. Since there are a number of employment paths in the tourism field, what you choose to do is somewhat dependent on where you choose to live. It is also always exciting to live and work abroad in countries that most people only dream of traveling to!

Working in tourism abroad is an excellent way to get real experience in the field you are interested in. It also demonstrates on your resume that you have the practical knowledge necessary to be successful in the highly competitive and always developing world of tourism.

While working abroad at a hotel, resort, restaurant, local attractions, events and conferences, tourism board, or travel company, you’ll gain hands-on experience in the core of the industry: travel and each of its moving parts to accommodate guests. While working abroad in tourism, your skills will grow significantly by learning the systems and processes utilized abroad. You’ll learn how local issues impact the tourism industry as well as how tourism impacts local communities.

With international travel expanding to include regions and countries otherwise overlooked in previous years, tourism jobs abroad can stretch to all corners of the world.

Europe is one of the most highly-visited continents by travelers throughout the world. These countries have been popular for centuries, making a culture of tourism deeply rooted in European societies. Destinations such as France , Italy , and Spain are especially popular, and the tourism industries there are concentrated on the historical and cultural traditions of each country.

Australia and New Zealand have been experiencing an increase in tourism in recent years. From the coasts, to the mountains, to bustling cities, these countries are prime locations for those looking to explore beyond the well-worn path of Europe’s historical landmarks. Tourists in Australia and New Zealand are typically younger, making for a very vibrant and energetic travel culture that can be exciting to work in.

South America and Central America , with their indigenous and Hispanic cultures, ancient ruins, and delicious food, have been making a name for themselves in the tourism industry. Ecotourism has boomed in certain countries, such as Costa Rica, shifting travelers’ exploration to an emphasis on rainforests and beaches, and emphasizing an appreciation for natural wonders.

There are a number of different paths to take when searching for a tourism job abroad, and your decision on what career to follow is entirely dependent on your skills, goals, and where you plan to work.

What makes these jobs valuable abroad versus in your home country . International tourism jobs can set you on a path towards an exciting career that allows you to continue to experience the rewarding challenges and excitement of living and working abroad. Future employers will see that you have practical knowledge and hands-on experience in the tourism industry, which will be helpful as you continue your career.

Professional benefits you can gain . Working in tourism abroad is an excellent way to get real experience in the field you are interested in. It also demonstrates on your resume that you have the practical knowledge necessary to be successful in the highly competitive and always developing world of tourism.

A day on the job . Whether working abroad at a hotel, resort, restaurant, local attractions, events and conferences, tourism board, or travel company, your day-to-day will always be different. You’ll gain hands-on experience in the core of the industry through travel and each of its moving parts to accommodate guests.

Salaries for international tourism jobs will vary depending on what part of the industry you decide to work in and what country you choose to live in.

The average flight attendants’ salary is around $38,800, whereas those interested in working as a tour guide can make anywhere between $27,000 and $40,000, although your salary is commensurate with your level of knowledge and experience. When working as a contracted tour guide (hired by another company to give tours), the company will typically pay you a lower base salary, with the assumption that you will earn more in tips.

In Europe, full-time work in hospitality will pay approximately $1,500 a month, sometimes with a room and some food provided. However, this may vary from country to country; the type of establishment (hostel vs. resort) may also affect your salary too.

Although the corporate world of travel provides less on-the-ground experience, you are compensated by a higher salary. Tour consultants for companies that organize tours abroad can earn on average around $41,000 with the opportunity for bonuses.

While working abroad in tourism, your skills will grow significantly by learning the systems and processes utilized abroad. You’ll learn how local issues impact the tourism industry as well as how tourism impacts local communities. Some countries require you to have a sponsored visa in order to live and work in-country. Additionally, working as a freelance tour guide in certain parts of the world requires a level of education on par with that of a university history professor in order to be a certified guide. You must know your chosen region or country thoroughly in order to be an effective guide.

Working in tourism abroad does not necessarily mean that you will simply be paid to travel. (Salaries for international tourism jobs will vary depending on what you do and what country you choose to live in.) It is a challenging, time-consuming field of work that requires a great deal of dedication and know-how in order to succeed. However, it is also an incredibly rewarding career path that connects you with other travelers and the country in which you decide to work abroad in. Not to mention the opportunity to live where others are merely vacationing is a huge bonus!

Employee of the month by day; relaxer to extremes by night. ;-)

We don’t blame you for wanting to find jobs that require a lot of international travel. ☆

For many people, traveling and working abroad after graduation is the perfect time to do so. It’s that sweet spot between the obligations of school and the daily grind of corporate life. For others, maybe becoming an expat will give you the career break from the monotony of working life that you need—and make you feel inspired again.

But long-term travel without some sort of income or reduced living expenses is simply not manageable for most folks (and that's before we even start factoring in our dreaded student debt). That’s why we’re presenting you the best of both worlds—jobs that require international travel!

If you can get your hands on those sweet, sweet jobs that allow you to travel abroad then you'll be set. You'll feel fulfilled by your work, start to satiate your appetite for adventure, and will meet incredible people along the way—you know, the kind that might help you get a leg up in your future career if needed.

Maybe you never got the chance to study abroad in college, or maybe you want something different from the regular 9 to 5 corporate job. Whatever your reason, here are some awesome jobs that travel abroad so that you can begin your international career :

Whether you’re making a career change or recently graduated from college, these entry level jobs that require travel will put you on the right path (and by that, we mean one that's glittered with many passport stamps!).

1. Teach English in Thailand with Greenheart Travel

Thailand is an extremely popular destination for both recent college grads and those who have been out of school for a while. It’s okay if you don’t have teaching experience. Everyone spends the first month in Hua Hin completing their required TESOL certification, learning about Thai culture, and meeting other travelers before beginning their semester-long teaching placement in a Thai school. This job includes one month’s accommodation during orientation, four months of medical insurance, and a salary starting at $900 per month. Hey, Thailand is called, “The Land of Smiles” for a reason!

If you don’t know if you can commit for a whole semester, there are short-term summer options as well. Certified teachers can go for six weeks during their summer break! The flexibility of this opportunity makes it one of our favorite entry level jobs that require travel.

  • Where: Various locations in Thailand , such as Bangkok, Trang, or Sukhotai

Those who complete the program are given a $8,000 bonus. Since the Peace Corps covers such a wide range of jobs and countries, it’s important to really do your research before applying to narrow down which sector is right for you.

Pro tips on building careers that allow you to travel abroad

jobs that require travel abroad

Getting paid to travel is the new black. <3

Entry level jobs that require travel aren’t exactly easy to get. Here’s our best advice on how YOU can land jobs that allow you to travel abroad.

  • Learn a foreign language. One of the more straightforward ways to secure jobs that require international travel is to be fluent in more than one language. The ability to communicate efficiently in another country will open so many doors!
  • Demonstrate an interest in learning about other cultures. International organizations want to hire someone who shows a genuine interest in getting to know other countries. Think of ways you have embraced the unfamiliar and how that can help you live in a new environment.
  • Don’t rule out opportunities that may not perfectly match what you want. Taking one job can be the stepping stone you need to start your dream career. It’s all about gaining experience to create opportunities for yourself.
  • Be realistic. Based on your citizenship, there may be visa restrictions that prevent you from living or working internationally. Even if you are able to work abroad, you may only be able to stay there for a certain period of time. Understanding these policies will allow you to set realistic goals and plan accordingly.

You’re all one step closer to launching careers with international travel. Yes!

How to Become a Pilot for Professional and Recreational Flying

We spoke to an aviation expert to understand the process of becoming a pilot.

Harrison Pierce is a freelance writer and digital nomad passionate about personal finance and travel. He is traveling full-time with the help of points and miles and enjoys connecting with people on the ground. His work has been published in Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, USA Today Blueprint, Matador Network, and other publications.

Pilot Schools

If you’ve always dreamt of taking a seat in the cockpit, you might consider getting your pilot's license. Although it's a bit harder than getting your driver's license, it’s an attainable goal for many aviation-obsessed travelers.

Different kinds of pilots fly a range of aircraft, so the license type you need will vary depending on your goals as a pilot, but the general rules of aviation, learning to fly, and applying for jobs will remain similar. For more information about how to become a pilot, we spoke with Abingdon Mullin, a pilot and founder of Abingdon Co. , a company that designs watches for female pilots. As a pioneer in the aviation industry, she has valuable insights for anyone hoping to take to the skies.

“My instructor always asked me before each lesson, ‘Did you check your ego at the door?’” says Abingdon. “He was referring to the door of my car in the flight school parking lot. What he was trying to instill in me was to keep an open mind, try things outside of my comfort zone during training, and not let my ego get in the way.” She continues, “It’s an excellent approach and one I still incorporate every time I approach an airplane to go fly.”

Here’s everything you need to know about becoming a pilot — from pilot schools to license types.

Meet the Expert

Abingdon Mullin is a pilot and founder of Abingdon Co . She has flown thousands of hours in over 80 different aircraft, up to the Airbus 321.

No specific educational background is required for entry into a pilot school. That said, if you wish to work for a major airline, they might prefer you to have a four-year college degree, but it’s generally not required. “Educational background is not as important because, in flight training, they'll teach you everything you need to know,” says Abingdon. “The only requirements you need are on the medical side. You must have a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certificate to fly an airplane by yourself, which is part of your private pilot training.”

Choosing a School

Luckily, you have plenty of options when it comes to schooling. If you want a four-year degree, you can attend a university with an aviation program (the Experimental Aircraft Association, or EAA, has a list of programs on its site ). If you want a more intensive option, you can go to an aeronautical university, where the entire curriculum is about flying. “Embry Riddle is the biggest example of this,” explains Abingdon. “You graduate with a four-year degree and your pilot certificates.” This could be an excellent option for those who want to make a career out of aviation.

There is a school for everyone, though. “Pilot schools come in all shapes and sizes,” says Abingdon. “Some schools are small mom-and-pop businesses at your local airport, [while] some schools have multiple locations all around the country in several states.”

Cavan Images/Getty Images

Courses Offered

If you’re pursuing a bachelor's degree in aviation, you might take courses on air traffic control, aircraft maintenance and safety, or even engineering. It will look a bit different if you’re just in a pilot school to get a license. Abingdon explains, “It depends on which type of school you go to, but for the most part, a typical lesson is one-on-one with you and a flight instructor. One day, you may cover steep turns. Another day, you may cover cross-country flight planning.”

Don’t think you can skip homework. “The instructor would have given you some homework to do before the lesson, so you come in prepared,” says Abingdon. “When they are discussing it with you and teaching it to you in a ‘ground’ lesson, you will work in a classroom with them for an hour or two (depending on the lesson).”

Then, you can use your lesson firsthand in the aircraft. “After your ground lesson, you'll both go out to the airplane and apply the knowledge you just gained in an aircraft,” says Abingdon. “Each daily lesson you do will usually be a combination of ground and flight.”

Unless you’re a full-time college student, you will likely do your training on days off from work or after work. “It's ideal to have three lessons a week, but you should really try to go a minimum of twice a week, or else you run the risk of forgetting and relearning lessons that were already covered,” Abingdon recommends. It can take a few months to become a private pilot or a couple of years to become a commercial pilot.

Rob Melnychuk/Getty Images

The specific requirements will depend on what type of pilot you want to be. For example, it might be more challenging to become a commercial airline pilot where you’re flying hundreds of passengers than it is to become a recreational pilot flying a small aircraft. There are three classes of medical certificates issued by the FAA : first-class airline transfer pilot, second-class commercial pilot, and third-class private pilot. Vision, hearing, blood pressure, and other specific health standards must be met to obtain a medical certificate, and pilots cannot have any disqualifying conditions (evaluated on a case-by-case basis), including epilepsy, certain heart conditions, psychosis, and other conditions outlined on the FAA website .

If you wish to become a pilot, an FAA-approved physician (called an Aviation Medical Examiner) will need to evaluate you. Apart from physical requirements, there are some soft skills that all pilots should have, like the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, problem-solving skills, extensive observational skills, and quick reaction time.

Related: How Many Planes Are in the Air Right Now?

First, you need to figure out what type of pilot you want to be. There are several different types of licenses you can go after — here’s what you should know about each, according to the FAA website.

  • A student pilot license allows you to learn to fly with a flight instructor present and fly solo after appropriate instructor endorsements and medical certification.
  • A recreational pilot certificate allows you to fly, but with limitations to the type of aircraft, the number of passengers, the distance that may be flown from the departure point, and flight into controlled airports, among others.
  • A private pilot certificate, one of the most popular types of licenses, lets you carry passengers and use an airplane for limited business use.
  • A commercial pilot certificate lets you conduct some operations for compensation and hire.
  • An airline transport pilot certificate is required to fly as a captain by some air transport operations.
  • A sport pilot certificate allows you to fly a light sport aircraft without an FAA medical certificate. It is typically one of the cheapest and quickest ways to fly, according to the EAA .

The details like the cost, number of hours flying, and any tests and examinations required will vary between licenses. However, you will generally start with the student pilot certificate and work toward a different pilot license based on your individual goals.

“A good pilot is always learning, so I never say that the schooling ends,” says Abingdon. “But after your private pilot training is over, you will schedule with a designated pilot examiner and go up for a test. There will be questions on the ground with the examiner, and then the [flight] portion of the test.” Once you complete the examination, you are a certified pilot.

Abingdon advocates for continued education. “Each pilot certificate you attain is just another tool in your toolbelt of flying, and it will only make you a safer, more capable aviator,” she notes. You can get add-on “ratings” to learn more in-depth information about specific aircraft, flying in inclement weather, and more.

Bernd Vogel/Getty Images

The cost of becoming a pilot will vary depending on the type of pilot you want to be. That said, you can expect that this will be an expensive undertaking. The student pilot certificate is free but requires a medical certificate, which typically costs anywhere from $75 to $200.

Sport pilot, recreational pilot, and private pilot certificates are good options for those who want to fly as a hobby, with the main difference between them being the hours needed to get the license, the type of aircraft you can fly, and the cost. Costs to get these licenses — which include training fees, aircraft rentals, exam fees, and more — can range from $7,000 up to around $20,000. If you wish to be a commercial airline pilot or airline transport pilot as a career, it can cost up to $100,000, according to Pilot Institute .

Pouya Dianat/Courtesy of Delta Air Lines

Those seeking a career as a professional pilot must meet FAA requirements. Pilots typically get their FAA-issued certificates and ratings in the following order:

  • Student pilot certificate
  • Private pilot certificate
  • Instrument rating
  • Commercial pilot certificate
  • Multi-engine rating
  • Airline transport pilot certificate

Like any job, the requirements will vary by company. To keep things simple, here is the process to become a Delta Pilot :

  • Initial application
  • Application review
  • Interview process (which includes an online assessment, a panel interview, and final evaluations)
  • Pre-employment screenings
  • Delta indoctrination
  • Wing ceremony
  • Training (Delta's Advanced Qualification Program (AQP) features state-of-the-art full-motion flight simulators and flight training devices. All pilots must pass the FAA-approved Initial Qualification Curricula.)
  • Take flight

For a career as a pilot, you will need to demonstrate extensive experience flying, so this is likely a long-term goal. If you’re just starting, you can work toward your private pilot's license before aiming for a career in aviation as a captain. Abingdon ends with, “Flying is a lot of fun, and it’s definitely brag-worthy once you have your certificate, but if you maintain a humble attitude and check your ego at the door, you will not be a pilot — you will be a true aviator.”

Magnetic Marvels: The “Rare” Metals Powering the Future of AI and Semiconductor Technology

Published on march 26, 2024 at by insider monkey staff.

B illionaires tend to invest with one eye on the future.

And three of them – Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, and Bill Gates – now have their sights set on a sector that many analysts predict will go into deficit this decade.

These members of the billionaire club have funded – to the tune of nearly $200 million – what’s been called a “massive treasure hunt” for rare earth elements.

What is it about these relatively unheard-of commodities that have many savvy investors and billionaires alike watching and investing?

This group of metals is crucial for semiconductor chips, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and much more.

With semiconductor chips, for example…

They provide the computing power necessary for everything from smartphones and smart devices to vehicles, TVs, washing machines, and microwaves.

That’s why I’ve seen a trend unfolding with investments in semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks.

Investors have gone all-in with stocks such as NVIDIA, a world leader in artificial intelligence computing chips and applications.

But here’s the thing…

These semiconductor chips cannot be manufactured without rare earth elements (REEs).

It’s even bigger than private investor and billionaire interest, the development of a robust supply chain for rare earth elements has full American and Canadian government support…

These governments clearly understand the need to secure a supply of rare earth minerals sufficient to achieve semiconductor independence.

Both the U.S. and Canada view it as a matter of national security.

Because right now, China has an “iron grip” on the mining of rare earth elements.

In fact, China accounted for 70% of global mine production of rare earths in 2022 .

What’s worse, China has already imposed export controls on certain rare earths needed to make semiconductor chips.

This could spell MAJOR disaster…

San Diego’s unemployment rate held steady in February with modest job gains in the region’s higher paying industries and losses in the retail sector.

The county’s unemployment rate was 4.7 percent last month, which was the same as January’s rate, state labor officials said this week. San Diego’s unemployment rate was below the California average of 5.6 percent, but higher than the national average of 4.2 percent.

When the 4.7 percent jobless rate for January was reported last month , it was San Diego County’s highest rate since October 2021.

“San Diego is your typical coastal economy. It’s afflicted with bad housing shortage problems. But relative to the other coastal economies, it is by far and away the most enlightened,” said Chris Thornberg of Beacon Economics. “A lot of multifamily (housing) has been coming online … digging into public transport to connect all these places. And as a result of that San Diego is by far and away the healthiest coastal economy.”

Jobless rate held steady in February.

Thornberg pointed to the strength of San Diego’s diverse industries from high tech to tourism and the military sector as counterbalances for seasonal and annual changes in labor.

San Diego’s largest jobs gains in February were in the professional and business services sector, which tend to account for high-earning roles, with 3,100 jobs added. Those gains primarily came from employment services — 1,200 jobs — which supply temporary workers to employers. Other professional service industries, such as life science and tech, contributed about 900 jobs to the monthly total.

Coming off the winter holidays, the leisure and hospitality sector added about 2,500 jobs, many of those roles in food and beverage services. Private education and health services (nursing and social assistance) also gained about 1,900 jobs.

Month-over-month job losses were led by the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which includes retail workers, with a decline of 1,700 jobs.

Daniel Enemark, chief economist at the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center, said the county’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.6 percent in February, which was a slight increase from the comparable 4.4 percent rate in January.

“The region gained 6,400 jobs last month while the labor force grew by 4,600 — positive developments, though both of these increases were slightly smaller than we would expect in a typical February,” Enemark said.

He noted that San Diego County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has hovered around the 4.4 percent to 4.6 percent range since November.

The Federal Reserve released an economic projections report Wednesday showing it expects unemployment rates to hold steady over the next three years as it aims to slowly drop inflation to a target of 2 percent. This week, the Fed opted to hold interest rates at 5.3 percent, but signaled that three cuts are coming later this year.

“While the last (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting saw interest rates unchanged, they are planning to lower rates later this year, so all indications suggest we may be in for the good kind of boring — steadily low unemployment throughout 2024,” Enemark said.

San Diego County’s labor force — adults who either have a job or are actively looking for one — was 1.6 million in February, up less than 1 percent in a year. Similarly, the labor force only grew at the same rate of less than a percent from January to February.

Year over year, the region gained about 13,600 jobs, or a 0.9 percent increase.

The biggest annual increase was in private education and health services, which added about 15,000 jobs. A majority of that sector’s gains — 91 percent — are attributed to hiring in health care.

Leisure and hospitality added 6,100 jobs, half of which were in arts, entertainment and recreation. Government jobs, mainly those in local government, contributed 5,700 jobs over the past year.

The largest yearly decline was in professional and business services (8,900); manufacturing (3,200); financial activities, which includes real estate, insurance and investment jobs (2,100); and information, which includes broadcasting, telecommunications, newspapers, publishing industry (1,200).

State officials do not seasonally adjust jobless rates for individual counties. Compared with other parts of California, San Diego County landed in the middle, with its rate of 4.7 percent.

The rate was 5 percent in Los Angeles County, 4.2 percent in Orange County, 3.8 percent in San Francisco County, 4.3 percent in Santa Clara County, 8 percent in Santa Cruz County and 5.6 percent in Riverside County.

At US universities, record numbers of Indian students seek brighter prospects — and overseas jobs

Pranay Karkale is spending years of savings and $60,000 in student loans to pursue a master’s degree in the United States, yet he considers himself lucky. At home in India, it’s common to hear about families selling off their land to send children to universities overseas.

Karkale was willing to do whatever it took once he got into Johns Hopkins University. A degree from a prestigious U.S. college, he believed, would open doors to a better job and higher pay than he would find in India.

“I don’t feel like I would have gotten the same level of education that I get here,” said Karkale, 23.

Historic numbers of students from India are studying at foreign universities as a fast-growing, aspirational generation of young people looks for opportunities they can’t find at home. India estimates 1.5 million students are studying at universities elsewhere — an eightfold increase since 2012 — with no country attracting more than the U.S.

It represents a loss for India, with many students seeing universities as stepping stones for careers overseas, but a boon for American schools . As record-setting enrollment by students from China has ebbed, U.S. universities have turned to India as a new source of full-price tuition payments.

India’s economy is growing, but joblessness remains persistent even for college graduates. Jobs are being created in fields such as construction and agriculture, but they don’t meet the demands of a newly educated workforce, said Rosa Abraham, an economist at the Azim Premji University.

“I think many young people today feel like the economy isn’t meeting their potential, their aspirations, and so they want to try their chances abroad if they can,” she said.

India’s own higher education system is also short on capacity. As its population surges, competition for admission to India’s top universities has become frenzied. Acceptance rates at some elite Indian universities have fallen as low as 0.2%, compared to 3% at Harvard University and 4% at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Lokesh Sangabattula, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in materials science at MIT, is among many hoping to land jobs inside the U.S. There’s little demand for materials scientists in India, he said, and at best he figures he could become a professor. It’s a similar story for engineers, which India generates in huge numbers without the industry to employ them.

“We produce engineers whose degrees don’t have value, so people leave the country,” he said.

Universities in Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom also are seeing surging interest, but none more than the U.S., where universities enroll nearly 269,000 students from India. With that number soaring, including a 35% increase in the 2022-23 academic year, India is on the verge of replacing China as the largest international presence on U.S. college campuses.

The vast majority are coming for graduate programs, often in science, math and engineering — fields that have faced persistent labor shortages in the U.S. — though undergraduate numbers also are rising as India’s middle class expands. One selling point is the chance to work in America for up to three years after graduating, a benefit provided by the U.S. government and known as optional practical training.

For Karkale, staying in India never felt like an option. As an undergraduate in India, he became interested in engineering management, which merges engineering and leadership skills. It’s a growing industry in the U.S. and Europe, but Karkale, who is from the western Indian state of Maharashtra, couldn’t find any master’s programs in India.

At Hopkins, he’s gaining professional work experience arranged by the school, a rarity at Indian universities, he said. Ultimately he wants to return to India, but the most appealing jobs are elsewhere. After graduating, he plans to work in the U.S. for at least a year or two.

If he could find the right job in India, he added, “I would hop right back.”

The surge has helped the bottom line of American colleges, which charge international students higher tuition rates. It comes as many Americans sour on higher education, citing concerns about student debt and the perception of liberal bias at universities. The number of students coming from China has been declining as a result of chilly political ties and a stagnant Chinese economy.

In India, American universities have become a common presence at college fairs. Many are spending big to gain name recognition in India, and they are fanning farther across the country to recruit in smaller cities and towns, where demand to study abroad has been rising.

Still, for the vast majority of India’s young people, an overseas education remains out of reach. The cost of a U.S. education is a fortune for most, and Indian banks have scaled back on student loans in response to high default rates.

Even for those who can afford it, the student visa process presents roadblocks. At the U.S. embassy in New Delhi, student applicants are routinely turned away.

On a recent Friday, Daisy Cheema slumped her shoulders and sighed as she left the embassy. She spent weeks preparing for a visa interview after getting accepted to Westcliff University, a for-profit college in California. She hired an agency to help, but her visa was rejected with no reason provided; she just received a slip of paper saying she could reapply.

Cheema, 22, hoped to gain work experience in the U.S. before returning to India to support her family. Her parents, who own a gas station in the northern Indian state of Punjab, were going to pay with their savings.

“I feel terrible right now,” said Cheema, holding back tears. “But I will prepare more and try again. I’m not giving up.”

America’s shift toward Indian students is visible on campuses like the University of Texas, Dallas, where enrollment from China fell from about 1,200 to 400 over the past four years. Meantime, enrollment from India grew from about 3,000 to 4,400.

Rajarshi Boggarapu came to the U.S. to get a master’s degree in business analytics and chose UT-Dallas in part because of its large Indian population. He borrowed $40,000 for tuition, which he sees as an investment in his future.

“We value education more than anything else back in India,” he said.

Like many U.S. universities, Johns Hopkins is deepening ties with India. It has hosted Indian diplomats to discuss health and engineering partnerships and is part of a new task force formed by the Association of American Universities to promote exchange with India.

Before he came to the U.S., Karkale had concerns about the political climate, but the campus made him feel welcome. When he couldn’t return home for Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, he was surprised to find a campus celebration that drew hundreds of students and staff.

In a campus gym adorned with colorful flowers and lamps, Karkale watched as student groups performed dances to a mix of new and old Indian music. There was a Hindu prayer ceremony. And when the dance floor opened up, Karkale joined in.

“It was a memorable evening,” he said. “It made me feel right at home.”

What the cargo ship bridge crash in Baltimore means for the economy

The Port of Baltimore, the ninth-busiest for foreign cargo, closed on Tuesday.

A container ship crash that partially collapsed Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Tuesday has destroyed a key artery for vehicle traffic in the city and closed the Port of Baltimore.

Six people remain unaccounted for as the search continues at the site of the bridge collapse, Coast Guard officials said at a Tuesday-morning news conference. Two people were rescued, including one who was hospitalized and later discharged, officials said.

The Port of Baltimore, the nation's 17th-largest in annual total tonnage of cargo as of 2021, handles more cars and trucks than any other in the U.S, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement last month. The Key Bridge, meanwhile, carried more than 30,000 vehicles each day.

Baltimore Harbor is expected to be closed for at least a few days amid ongoing rescue and cleanup efforts, Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's Analytics, told ABC News. The bridge collapse will not meaningfully impact the U.S. economy, nor will it push Baltimore into a recession, Zandi added, though he said the incident could still cause significant economic ramifications.

The Port of Baltimore set a record last year for the amount of foreign cargo handled at its point of entry, Gov. Moore said.

In all, the port handled 52.3 tons, or $80 billion worth, of foreign cargo, making it the ninth-busiest port in the country last year for such goods.

"The Port of Baltimore is a key component in Maryland's transportation network," Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said in a statement last month.

The port leads all U.S. peers in the handling of autos, heavy farm and construction machinery, imported sugar and imported gypsum, Moore said.

The Port of Baltimore handled around 850,000 cars and light trucks in 2023, putting its annual amount above that of any other U.S. port for the past 13 years, according to the Maryland Port Administration.

The port closure could result in "some short-term impacts in the auto market," Zandi said, noting that the outcome will depend on the duration of the blockage and the availability of alternative transportation routes.

Roughly 15,000 jobs depend directly on the port, while nearly 140,000 jobs are linked to its activities, Moore said in a statement last month.

MORE: What to know about the massive ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

Norwegian Cruise Line operates winter and summer trips through the port, Moore said. In February, the company was set to return later this year.

On top of the interruption of port activity, the collapse of the Key Bridge removes a major passageway for vehicles, especially commercial ones, Zandi said.

Large trucks traveling through Baltimore rely on the Key Bridge, since they're prohibited from using the Harbor Tunnel, an alternative route. Due to the bridge collapse, Zandi added, such trucks will need to travel through the city of Baltimore or take a significant detour, causing notable delays.

Taken together, the supply disruption from the port closure and bridge collapse could put slight upward pressure on U.S. prices, Zandi said.

ABC News' Emily Shapiro, Zunaira Zaki and Elizabeth Schulze contributed to this report.
