Sorting, ranking, and search results.

Tours of Key West wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That's why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.

On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You'll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.

If you see a Badge of Excellence label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Tours of Key West over a 12-month period.

The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We're always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

5-STAR KAYAK & SUP ADVENTURES ★★★★★

TripAdvisor logo

A great kayak tour through the mangroves of Key West. We saw lots of different sea life in the Keys as well as a giant iguana. Our tour guide John was excellent. A wealth of knowledge about the local ecosystem. Would highly recommend!

What are great tour! Our guide's was named Jim, Jim had so much knowledge of the keys and its ecosystem we learned so much. The eco tour definitely opened my eyes to key west in a new way. Excellent tour! Staff was friendly and even held my cell phone during the trip :)

Bethany was our tour guide, she was very knowledgeable of the area, wildlife, and climate. There wasn’t a question she couldn’t answer she definitely made the trek more enjoyable with her positive and upbeat personality. It was a fun beautiful ride, surprisingly more leisurely than I had imagined it to be.

Our two teens and we enjoyed our tour. Everyone was very nice, helpful and positive. Bethany was a knowledgeable guide and she showed us things we wouldn’t have seen on our own, Thanks!

Boca Chica Kayaking

The Boca Chica kayak tour offers a great diversity of marine life and habitats in a small area, highlighted by fantastic tidal creeks . On emerald water , we meander through islands of exotic red mangroves or “walking trees.” You will want to bring your camera for this! Then paddle over sandy shallows brimming with:

  • Unique coral
  • Colorful sponges
  • Queen conch
  • Tropical fish

Your guide will catch some of these critters, so you can get to know them personally! As we drift near a tropical island, look for osprey nesting and wading birds feeding. Queen conch , small sharks , tarpon and stingrays are common, as is the spectacular spotted eagle ray .  Because our tours are sheltered from the wind, we encounter no large waves which makes for the perfect marine-life experience!

Meeting Place and Check-In Time

Roosevelt Blvd. , Key West, FL 33040, located near the Key West International Airport. Once you arrive, briefly park your car ( no bikes/walk-ups/taxis allowed ) while you check in with your guide. Wait in the lot and then  follow your guide in your vehicle about 2.5 miles to the dock  where the kayaks will be waiting! Lost? Please call 305-394-0280 .
  • Please arrive 35 minutes before your tour is scheduled to depart. We will leave right on time!
  • Dress appropriately for the day’s weather. If light rain is predicted, bring a rain jacket!
  • Wear a bathing suit and light clothing that you won’t mind getting wet. You may get splashed from time to time by paddle drip!

Guest Reviews

Escape the ordinary - only 15 minutes from busy downtown Key West, Geiger Key is a pristine paradise. For easy paddling, we select the best route depending on weather, wind and tide conditions. Your expert nature guide takes you through sheltered winding mangrove trails, pointing out native marine life, plants and birds of the Florida Keys. Each tour is different as you explore nature’s touch tank and your guide looks for unusual sea creatures to pass around and touch. Learn about this tropical ecosystem and how the mangrove islands and sea grass beds serve as a marine nursery for Key West’s fish, animals and birds. See dolphins, turtles, rays and bright fish in the water, iguanas sunning in the trees and birds soaring overhead. Feel the tropical air kiss your skin, hear tropical bird calls around you.

No experience is necessary. Our expert guide provides you with paddling tips for both kayaks and paddle boards. We use high quality sea kayaks with comfortable back rests. Both single and tandem kayaks are available. On our 11AM and 3PM tours you may choose a paddle board instead of a kayak. We provide stable, easy-to-paddle, high tech touring boards. These boards are designed for riders up to 250 pounds with a contoured nose section to cut through chop with more forward speed and a comfortable paddling position. Children are welcome on kayaks. Guests must be 13 years of age or older for paddle boards.

Each tour is limited to a small group, making it easy to follow your guide as they point out the various marine life, plants and birds during the tour. We pride ourselves on having the most knowledgeable and friendly guides in Key West so you can ask lots of questions along the way. Or if you prefer, just glide along, enjoy the sounds of nature, and soak in the natural beauty surrounding you.

A photographer’s dream, opportunities abound for nature photos throughout this Key West backcountry tour. Whether you prefer pictures of birds, animals, tropical fauna or unusual sea life this is the top Key West attraction for you. We provide dry bags for cameras.

What To Bring

Polarized sun glasses, towel, sunscreen, and large brim hats. Don’t forget your camera! We ask that you not use aerosol sunscreen, it makes the kayak and paddleboard slippery and the chemicals harm our beautiful marine ecosystem. You will probably get wet on this tour - please dress appropriately. If you burn easily, consider sun protective clothing.

Bugeye Backcountry Eco Tour

Bugeye Backcountry Eco Tour

Key west’s newest schooner eco-tour.

Key West Schooners

Our Bugeye Backcountry Adventure Eco Tour combines three great Key West adventures into one day: a Key West schooner sail, a guided kayak tour of mangrove islands and a snorkel tour of backcountry reefs. Discover the diverse ecosystem of the Florida Key’s backcountry in one awesome all-day tour.

This intimate nature tour is limited to only 20 passengers, providing you with ample seating and room to spread out for your relaxing day on the tropical water. Departing from Key West’s Historic Seaport, the Appledore Star’s sails are raised for an authentic sail experience on the way to Key West’s backcountry. If you always wanted to sail a tall ship, this is your chance to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. We encourage passenger participation!

Your day is spent exploring Key West’s uninhabited mangrove islands in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. The shallow-draft Appledore Star is the perfect design for your eco adventure, being a replica of historic bugeye schooners that dragged for oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and many other wildlife that call the Refuge home. Your captain knows where dolphins are frequently seen and will let you know if he spots any.

Upon reaching the mangrove islands, the schooner anchors and your exploration begins. Your day is divided between guided kayaking tours and guided snorkeling tours. For kayaking your crew will help you into your stable sea kayak, providing paddling instructions. Don’t worry if you aren’t used to paddling – the warm, shallow water is calm, sheltered by the uninhabited mangroves, making kayaking a breeze. This is where you will experience the best kayaking in Key West.

On your kayaking tour, the crew talks about the mangroves and their important role as nurseries to the sea. Learn how mangrove trees survive in salt water and about the varied marine life that inhabit Key West’s unique mangrove ecosystem. Did you know that several hundred species of birds call these mangroves home? On a typical day, you may see ospreys, frigates, blue herons, bald eagles and even roseate spoonbills. In the water, look for sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays and tropical fish.

You also have the opportunity to get in the water on a guided snorkel tour. Your experienced crew provides professional instructions on snorkeling along with information on the sponge gardens. Never snorkeled? No worries – the crew answers all your questions. Soon you are enjoying your snorkel tour of the shallow, calm waters of the sponge gardens. Take in the tropical fish, sponges, and marine wildlife that call the gardens home. Prefer to float on the surface or new to the water? Grab a noodle, lean back and watch the clouds drift by.

Conditions vary throughout the different areas of the mangrove islands. We pride ourself on providing our guests with the best experience possible and your experienced captain will chart a course for the optimal kayaking and snorkeling locations given that day’s tides and weather conditions.

After your tours, come back aboard and wash off with our fresh water rinse. Find a comfortable spot to relax on deck. Choose from plenty of complimentary cold drinks – frosty cold beer, wine, homemade sangria, chilled sodas and filtered water. This is the best of laid-back island living.

Lunch is also served on the boat, an all-you-can-eat fresh buffet feast. Start with peel & eat shrimp and delicious fried chicken. Move on to a selection of deli meats and cheeses accompanied by assorted breads and condiments.

Once the day winds down, its time to raise anchor and leave the mangrove islands behind. Refresh yourself with another tasty beverage, including our tropical homemade sangria. Enjoy an afternoon snack of freshly made chocolate chip cookies, chips and dip, and seasonal fruits. Relax and enjoy your sail back to the Historic Seaport as a memorable day in Key West draws to a close.

PLEASE NOTE:

To re-board the schooner after snorkeling and kayaking you are required to climb aboard a platform secured to the boat just below the waterline, from there you climb a ladder back aboard the schooner. This activity requires a certain amount of physical ability. If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact us before booking.

5 Things You Should Know About Key West Mangroves

mangrove kayak tours key west

If your destination is Key West , then you already know how beautiful the crystal clear water is. Did you know Key West is actually closer to Havana, Cuba, than to Miami? As you travel the Overseas Highway, you’ll cross 42 bridges and a chain of islands before arriving in Key West .

5 Key West Mangrove Facts That Will Surprise You

A tour we think you'll love.

If you are looking for an adventure or something new and different to experience, then you should plan a mangrove kayak trip at night while you’re there. The key west mangroves are an important part of our ecosystem and marine life. Here are five things you should know about key west mangroves and mangrove tunnels.

mangrove kayak tours key west

1. Red, White, And Black Mangrove Trees

Did you know there are many different kinds of mangrove trees? In Key West, you’ll find that the red, white, and black trees are the most common. The roots are mostly found underwater, but that also depends on the ebb and flow of the tides.

Red mangroves are usually found growing at sea level near the shore. They have pointy, shiny leaves with reddish arching aerial roots with white flowers.

White mangroves are found more upland than red or black and can reach at least 40 ft. tall in the sun. They have white, fairly smooth barks with small yellow flowers.

The black mangroves are found more inland and grow more vertical than the red or white mangroves. Their bark is dark and usually covered with salt from the plant. They have white flowers that produce mangrove honey.

2. What Purpose Do Mangrove Trees Serve?

Mangroves provide food for fish, such as snapper, jack, mullet, and tarpon. They also serve a variety of bird species for their nests, as well as rookeries for brown pelican, frigate bird, roseate spoonbill, belled kingfisher, egret, and herons. The mangrove root systems help to prevent erosion by stabilizing the shoreline. Many sea creatures, such as amphipods, shrimps, sponges, sea stars, crabs, mollusks, barnacles, snails, and jellyfish all live on and near these root systems. Mangroves are also home to manatees, lemon sharks, and mudskippers.

3. Mangroves are excellent sources of carbon

It has been discovered that mangrove forests can possibly store more than 10 times as much carbon compared to other ecosystems. Why is this important? It not only helps to protect our environment, but it also makes it easier for us to breathe. The soil is especially important for storing carbon.

4. Mangroves are in danger

Due to the expanse of the shrimp industry, mangrove forests and mangrove tunnels are in danger. Shrimpers use nets that sometimes damage the ocean floor and traps not only shrimp but other local wildlife. Other factors that are causing mangroves to be in danger include coastal development, agriculture, climate change, hurricanes, and storm surges.

5. Mangroves offer protection

Mangrove roots provide a barrier to help coastlines deal with rising waters since their root systems help keep soil in place. They protect both saltwater and freshwater ecosystems because their roots help to filter phosphates and nitrates from rivers carrying them out to sea. They also help to protect seawater from entering inland waterways.

Discover The Best Mangrove Kayaking In The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are beautiful, with amazing coasts and a diverse ecosystem. One of the coolest things you can do is kayak through the coast’s mangrove forests. Paddling through these serene and enchanting habitats allows you to get up close and personal with a variety of plant and animal species.

Each stroke of your paddle reveals a new landscape to behold. The mangrove forests are like homes for so many living things, and they bring together the land and the sea.

As you paddle through the twisting paths and secret ways, you see how amazing nature is. The sunlight shines through the leaves, making patterns on the water and showing you hidden places you might not have noticed before.

In this article, we’ll explore the 5 best mangrove kayaking destinations in the Florida Keys, where you can find incredible things in nature.

So, let’s get started and explore this amazing world together!

What Makes Florida Keys Mangroves So Unique?

A beautiful drone shot of Florida Keys Mangroves.

The Florida Keys’ mangroves are special because they’re different from other places. There are two main reasons why they’re unique. Firstly, they’re home to lots of different plants and animals.

And secondly, there are special ways that these creatures interact with each other.

Biodiversity Hotspots

An underwater image that shows biodiversity of Florida Keys mangroves.

The Florida Keys’ mangroves have many different plants and animals living there. These mangroves are where the land and the sea meet, so it’s a perfect spot for many different species to live.

The roots of the mangroves are like safe houses for baby fish, crabs, and other small sea creatures. The mangroves provide them with a safe place to grow and find food.

Birds like herons, egrets, and pelicans also love the mangroves because they can build their nests and find food easily. The mangroves are like a treasure trove of life, with so many different plants and animals in one place.

Unique Ecological Interactions

The mangroves in the Florida Keys have special connections between different plants and animals. The roots of the mangroves create a maze where animals can hide and find food.

Some little creatures like crabs and snails make their homes among the roots. This attracts bigger fish and birds that like to eat them. When leaves fall from the mangroves, they decay and provide food for tiny plants and animals in the water.

This starts a chain reaction, with more animals coming to eat the plants and other animals. It’s like a big food web where everyone depends on each other.

These connections help keep the mangrove ecosystem balanced and show us how important it is to care for these habitats.

Best Time To Go Kayaking In Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are known for their warm and tropical climate. But different seasons offer different flavors to your kayaking expedition.

Winter and spring offer pleasant weather with cooler temperatures, while the summer can be hot and humid. So it’s a good idea to plan your kayak trip during the cooler months to avoid sun exposure and get the most out of the expedition.

During the winter months (December to February), the weather in the Florida Keys becomes comfortable for outdoor adventures.

This means you won’t have to worry about feeling too hot or sweaty while kayaking through the mangroves. The air feels refreshing, and the water is calm and inviting. It’s the ideal time to explore the breathtaking mangrove forests, spot interesting wildlife, and soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Keep an eye out for migratory birds that visit the area during this time, adding a touch of wonder to your adventure.

Summer (June to August) in the Florida Keys brings warmer temperatures and higher humidity. While the heat can be intense, it doesn’t mean you can’t plan your trip during summer.

During summer, daytime temperature ranges from around 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity levels can be relatively high, making the air feel sticky.

So, it’s important to stay hydrated and protect your skin from the sun’s rays by wearing sunscreen and lightweight clothing.

Planning A Perfect Mangrove Kayak Trip In The Florida Keys

Are you excited about going on a mangrove kayak trip in the Florida Keys and making the most out of the expedition? If so, plan your trip perfectly. With its diverse options, it might seem like you need help figuring out what to do, where to go, and more.

We’ve compiled a few tips so that you can easily make the most of your expedition.

However, it might seem a bit tricky.

Choose The Perfect Mangrove For Your Expedition

The Florida Keys offer a range of mangrove kayaking experiences for different preferences.

The Key Largo is a great spot with clear water and lots of cool animals like fish, birds, and manatees. If you go to Key West, it’s a mix of exciting and peaceful. You can go through tunnels made by the mangroves and see colorful fish and playful dolphins.

Islamorada is all about exploring and finding hidden things. The mangroves there have twisty roots that make tunnels, and it feels like a magical place.

Lido Key is perfect if you like peace and birds. You can see fancy herons and parrots while paddling around.

And if you want to see a whole ecosystem, go to Long Pine Key. It’s full of birds, fish, and corals, so there’s lots to discover.

Choose the mangrove that suits your preferences for an unforgettable mangrove kayaking in the Florida Keys.

Go When It’s Best For Your Expedition

Consider the time of year for your trip. The Florida Keys have a warm and tropical climate, but some seasons are more comfortable than others. The winter and spring months (December to April) offer pleasant weather with cooler temperatures, making it an ideal time to explore the mangroves.

The summer months (June to August) can be hot and humid, so if you’re sensitive to heat, it’s best to plan your trip during the cooler months.

Check The Weather And Tides

Before heading out, check the weather forecast and tide charts for your chosen date and location. You want to ensure that the conditions are favorable for kayaking.

Look for calm winds, clear skies, and moderate tides to have a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Observe Wildlife From A Distance

One of the highlights of mangrove kayaking is the opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. While it’s exciting to encounter birds, fish, gators, and other creatures, remember to maintain a respectful distance.

Observe them without intruding on their space. And appreciate their beauty and behavior without causing any harm or stress.

Go With A Guide

If you’re new to kayaking or unfamiliar with the area, consider going on a guided tour. Experienced guides can provide valuable insights, share their knowledge about the mangroves and the wildlife, and ensure your safety throughout the trip.

They can take you to the best spots and help you make the most of your kayaking adventure.

What Do You Wear To A Mangrove Kayak?

When going on a mangrove kayak, it’s important to wear suitable attire for comfort and safety. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and be prepared for potential exposure to water and insects. So, it’s best to wear lightweight, quick-drying clothing that allows freedom of movement. Opt for swimwear or water shorts that can get wet without causing discomfort. Besides, protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and lightweight jacket or rash guard.

Are There Alligators In Florida Keys Mangroves?

Yes, there are alligators present in some areas of the Florida Keys mangroves. Alligators are primarily found in freshwater habitats such as lakes, rivers, and marshes. But both American alligators and crocodiles are common in mangrove habitats .

Final Words

To sum it up, the Florida Keys have some really awesome places for mangrove kayaking. The mangroves there are special because they have different ecosystems that are home to many cool plants and animals. You can find clear waters in Key Largo and secret tunnels in Islamorada.

When you go kayaking in the mangroves, it’s like entering a whole new world of nature. You get to paddle through twisty channels, see lots of fish and other sea creatures, and admire the beautiful green trees.

To have the best time on your mangrove kayaking trip, it’s important to plan. Choose the right place to go that matches what you like, and check the weather and tides before you head out. It’s also super important to take care of the environment by being responsible and not leaving any trash behind.
