SERVE Youth Mission Trips for Groups

SERVE is typically a one-week mission trip for teens in the United States or Canada that introduces middle school (Grades 6-8) or high school (Grades 9-12) students to spreading the gospel through missional living and confronting issues of justice. Each all-inclusive missions trip experience is planned with individual and corporate benefit in mind. SERVE provides hands-on service that is people-focused, giving SERVE trips a very personal and long-term impact.

The week typically starts with fun teambuilding and get-to-know-you activities. Each workday starts with morning devotions before teams go off to their work sites, where the emphasis is to connect with the people you are serving and share God’s love. Every night the students are led in worship and the speaker for the week brings a message related to the theme. These sessions are challenging and faith-building. Each evening also includes free time for games, sports, or hanging out with new friends. One day of the week is a ‘Day Away’ where everybody has a fun day off together at the beach, local theme park, cottage, or local attraction.  You can find more information about SERVE in our FAQ section here .

SERVE is not just a week-long summer youth mission trip. It’s about a transformation that lasts a lifetime!

Where will you serve, (choose a youth mission trip type below).

High School Mission Trips

High School Mission Trips

High School SERVE mission trips are week-long (7 day) mission experiences open to students who have completed grade 8 through graduating seniors. The community-focused environment of SERVE encourages students’ passion for their own congregation and community, so the impact of SERVE continues long after the high school students return home.

Middle School Mission Trips

Middle School Mission Trips

Middle school sites are not available for SERVE 2024.  If you’re interested in hosting a future middle school SERVE site, please contact us!

Middle School SERVE mission trips are shorter mission experiences open to students who have completed grade 6 through students who have completed grade 8.

Youth group mission trips.

Mission trips and other faith-forming experiences are proven to be the #1 way to keep teens active in the church and growing in their faith . SERVE youth mission trips for teens are  all-inclusive, 5-7 day service trips for Middle School or High School students . The students  go into communities in the USA and Canada  to care for and restore their world in an environment where they’ll encounter the concepts of justice and missional living. More than just a week-long short-term mission trip over the summer, SERVE is a faith-forming experience where the communities, congregations, and students who are involved  all  experience lasting transformation.

Impact of Hosting a Teen Mission Trip

Students on SERVE mission trips are helping to transform communities and congregations across North America (think of them as domestic mission trips). Together, ThereforeGo and local churches work together to share the love of Jesus Christ with those in our own backyards. SERVE is more than just a week-long missions trip for teens ; these young adults will walk away with an experience that will have a long-term impact on your local community and the people that live, work, and worship in them. We can use help hosting  youth group mission trips in 2024 .

“SERVE started a momentum in our congregation that is like a mini revival. I’ll have to determine how to make the most of it throughout the rest of the year.”

How much does a serve mission trip cost.

SERVE mission trips for teens cost $400 USD if online paperwork is completed by April 1. Everything is included except transportation. Between April 1 and April 15 a $25 late fee is applied.  After April 15, the late fee increases to $50. Not ready to pay? That’s okay. The final payment isn’t due until May 1.

*Some sites vary slightly in price based on different lengths of experience. Choose a trip location and check its description to find out more!

Who can participate (ex. how old do you have to be)?

We get this question a lot: “How old do you have to be to go on mission trips with ThereforeGo?”

High School SERVE Mission Trips : Any student who has completed grade 8 through graduating seniors in the spring of 2024.

Middle School SERVE Mission Trips : Any student who has completed grades 6 through 8.

Adult Leaders : Adult leaders must be 21 years or older. See more information under the question “What are adult leader expectations (and how many are needed)?”

Do I have to be in a youth group or can I come by myself? Our current SERVE model does not accommodate individual participants. For more information  contact us .

How do I find a mission trip?

Find SERVE mission trip locations here on our trip locations page .

When choosing a mission trip, we recommend taking the following factors into consideration.

  • Dates : It’s important to figure out what dates work for your church and the largest number of people in your youth group.
  • Location : Do you want to drive? Are you willing to fly? Transportation can be one of the most complex factors to a mission trip so it is important to factor in how far and by which method you are willing to travel.
  • Capacity : If you have a large group (more than 15 people) we recommend that you look for a SERVE site that has a capacity of 60 or more. We have found that SERVE sites are more successful if we can place 3 or more different churches at any one site.

What’s the registration process?

After you’ve picked a site ( see mission trip destinations ), follow this process to register:

STEP ONE : Place a $50 deposit per participant to save spots at a particular SERVE site. You’ll just need the number of youth and adult leader spots for your group. Approximately 1-3 weeks after you submit this form, you’ll receive a site confirmation letter by email confirming which site your group has been placed at and providing you with the access code that your group will use to complete your paperwork in Step 2.  Save your spots starting November 1 at Noon (EST)!

STEP TWO :  After you place your deposit and receive your site confirmation letter with your access code, you can then  complete your online registration for each participant individually. You must complete your paperwork by April 1. All registrations completed between April 1 and April 15 will be charged with a $25 late fee.  All paperwork completed after April 15 will be charged a $50 late fee.

STEP THREE: Payment in full is due on May 1 for all SERVE sites.  Background checks are due for all adults on May 15.  For more information on the ThereforeGo background check policy, click here .

Is there still room at a particular site (trip destination) or is it full?

Check the  site description page  or  contact us  to find out whether there are still openings available at a particular site.

Can 19 & 20-year-olds come along?

Our current SERVE mission trips model does not accommodate 19 & 20-year-old participants. For more information contact us .

What are adult leader expectations (and how many are needed)?

How Many Adult Leaders Are Needed for a  SERVE Mission Trip ? One adult (21 years of age or older) is required for every five youth. At least one adult of each gender (if students of each gender are attending).

Adult Leader Responsibilities

  • Serve as small group leaders.
  • Act as work site overseers.
  • All adults are required to attend the entire week with  SERVE .
  • Driving their small group to and from work sites throughout the week.
  • Be safety-conscious at all times.
  • General crowd control and spiritual coaching throughout the week. Download the leader handbook (PDF).

Other Details All Adult Leaders (21 and older) are required to complete and submit a current background check to the ThereforeGo Ministries office. To be considered current for the 2024 SERVE season, the check must be completed after June 15, 2021. See how to submit a background check here .

What do small groups look like during SERVE?

The host team will place participants in small work/prayer groups, trying to not have more than two people from the same church in the same group in order to promote community among the entire SERVE Site.

What’s the SERVE Site Confirmation?

1-3 weeks after you place a deposit for a SERVE Site, you will receive (by email) a site confirmation letter with instructions to  complete your online paperwork  (if you already have received this letter,  click here ).

Where can I get more information about my SERVE Site?

The Host Team for your SERVE Site will be sending out a welcome letter which will include more details about the week and a packing list. You can expect to receive the information approximately 30 days before your mission experience begins. You can find out who your Host Church is by going to the site’s page ( one of the locations found here ).

Do mission trips really help?

We believe that whether mission trips help or not depends on the type of mission trip you have. Real lasting impact is never accomplished in a week. This is why we partner with local churches to provide our SERVE mission trips! All of our sites are run by volunteers who live and work in these communities all year long.

We believe that SERVE mission trips provide a two-fold impact:

  • Become doers of the Word and not hearers only
  • Become justice conscious, meeting needs while being introduced to the root causes and concerns
  • Grow in their personal faith
  • Continue serving others when they return to their home church and community
  • Identify community assets and needs
  • Provide an infusion of energy to their mission, vision, and outreach efforts
  • Help deepen personal relationships and partnerships within their local community. Our host sites are encouraged to partner with ministries that they have an existing relationship with and allow this group of teenagers to bring energy and excitement to the long term partnership.

What tips do you have for traveling with students?

Traveling with Minors:  Any adult who is not a parent or guardian should have written permission to supervise the child from the parent or guardian, as well as the child’s identification, and carry it with them. A letter would also facilitate entry for any one parent traveling with their children. This permission letter should contain addresses and telephone numbers where the parent or guardian can be reached. ( Example Consent to Travel Form  – find  more forms and resources here )  It is strongly recommended that the letter is notarized.

Passport and travel requirements for U.S. and Canadian citizens vary according to the country where you are going. For more information about passport and travel requirements you may check the websites below:

Canada Border Services Agency —  www.cbsa.gc.ca Foreign Affairs Canada —  www.travel.gc.ca U.S. State Department —  www.travel.state.gov U.S. Customs and Border Protection —  www.cbp.gov

*15-passenger vans are not allowed into Ontario due to MTO restrictions

It is your group’s responsibility to have the correct documentation if you are crossing a border.

Keep It Safe:  Make photocopies of your passport’s identification page and/or of your identification cards, and keep the copies separate from the original when you travel. For added security, leave a copy with a friend or relative at home.

Be Mindful:  As COVID policies and requirements continue to change, before crossing an international border, be sure to look up the current COVID vaccine or testing requirements for entry and exit.

For more information,  contact us .

Are there resources for sending (going) churches?

There are  numerous resources  for your church to use in the planning and preparation for your trip.  Visit our online Resource Box!

Are there scholarships available?

Need-based scholarships are available for SERVE. Download a  scholarship form  and/or  contact us for more information. Deadline for request is April 1, 2024.

What forms of payment are accepted and how do I make them?

All SERVE payments are in USD.

ThereforeGo Ministries accepts check/cheque, money order, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover payments .

Payments can be made three ways:

  • Online through the registration system
  • Over the phone by calling ThereforeGo at 616.241.5616 x3038
  • By mail.  Checks/cheques should be made out to ThereforeGo Ministries  and mailed to:

ThereforeGo Ministries Attn: SERVE 4695 44th Street SE Suite 130 Kentwood, MI 49512

Contact us if you have additional questions.

What about insurance?

ThereforeGo Ministries carries secondary health insurance and liability insurance. All insurance claims must be submitted to the participant’s individual insurance first. ThereforeGo’s insurance will begin where the participant’s insurance ends for any medical expenses incurred while at the site. If a participant does not have insurance coverage, ThereforeGo’s insurance becomes the primary coverage. Participants are not covered while traveling to or from the youth mission experience. Check with your insurance provider to verify your coverage in the state/province/country where you are traveling, and bring a copy of your insurance card along .

What’s the transportation policy?

Registration fees do  not  include transportation to and from sites (except where noted). Any exception is noted in the site descriptions as “on-site transportation included” (find the site description on  one of the locations found here ).

Each group must provide a vehicle(s) and adult driver(s) to transport an equal number of participants during the duration of the mission trip. If your group is unable to provide van transportation, please  contact us  to discuss options and additional charges.

What’s the cancellation policy?

Please note that while we were blessed to be able to refund all deposits for SERVE 2020, moving forward all deposits will be non-refundable and not transferable to your remaining balance due.

In the case of extreme weather, disaster, or COVID cancellation: TGM has your group’s safety in mind as we host events. If we are unable to host an event due to weather conditions, national disaster, or because current COVID guidelines set by government agencies prohibit TGM from continuing a SERVE experience, deposits cannot be refunded. Refunds of final balance payments will be made only if properties and/or locations refund TGM for these costs. If an event is hosted as scheduled and your group cancels or reduces numbers due to weather conditions or other concerns, all payments are non-refundable.

If a registrant or immediate family member has an emergency prior to or during the summer mission experience, TGM will do what we can to refund a significant portion of the money.

If you request a change of location or substitution of participants within 30 days of the start date, an additional $50 may be charged to cover administrative costs.

Ian

Teaching Pastor - Garden City Community Church

" Most mission organizations have goals to be Christ-centered, servant-leadership-oriented and fun. Next Step lives out those goals better than any other mission organization that I have seen. We absolutely love the fact that all of the Next Step summer staff actually engage with the students and care about them, whether they’re cooking or cleaning or working construction, they truly engage with the students."

Suze

Community Partner - Family Life Services

" We have been very strapped with staff. We have struggled to provide any organized opportunities for the kids in our program. Because of Next Step, we have been able to provide a kids program in the summer. It has been such a hit. This has been a huge answer to prayer for me to know that our children are spending their summer having people invest in their lives. What a blessing for single moms — it’s an investment in the kids."

Gloria

Community Resident - Colorado Springs

" I still don’t want to say I can’t believe this, because I have to believe this. God knows my heart. He knew my patience in waiting. And all of sudden somebody tells me about Next Step. I thought they were going to come for 1 week, but now we’re in the 4th week. The work is immaculate. Every minute they’re asking — what can I do for you. I want to say sometimes, Lord what have I done to deserve this? God deserves all the glory."

Nic

Student Pastor - Cornerstone Bible Fellowship

" Next Step’s values and commitment to community involvement, that made us want to come and partner with Next Step, not just for a one-time trip, but for a long-term relationship. We landed on South Dakota because it stretches us out of our comfort zone. This being our 5th year, we just love pouring into this community. We leave with a renewed sense of what the gospel is and a renewed sense of our community back home."

Katie

Student - Elkhorn Hills UMC

"This is my fifth mission trip with Next Step. We always grow really close after our mission trip. I’ve worked everywhere from inner-city Milwaukee to the Pine Ridge Reservation. It’s amazing how many new people you meet. Next Step always makes sure you are paired with people who care and people who really appreciate our help. Every experience is amazing. Every trip is different in its own way. Every trip has impacted my life so much!"

By working alongside a local church, you can be assured that the work they are doing will be done with sustainability in mind.

We desire to see long term relationships formed between your team and the community you are serving in. To that end, we encourage our teams to return year after year to deepen the relationships formed during that first mission trip. Connect directly with youth in the community by leading a youth rally, fellowship night, or worship.

Adult Ministry

Lead parenting classes, Bible studies, or leadership training. One of our Belizean pastors shared that when you minister to adults, you are ministering to entire families and communities.

Medical Ministry

If your group has specialized medical or dental training, your skills can be of great help in many of our ministry locations. (Note: Due to government regulations, medical ministry is not available everywhere. Please call 888-PPM-4090 to find out more!)

Have a unique ministry that God has blessed you and your team to be able to lead? Let us know and we will incorporate it into your customized trip!

Short-Term Missions.

Long-term impact..

Group Mission Trips creates the perfect environment for youth and adults to build relationships and make a long-term impact while serving on short-term mission trips across the world.

“I have been taking High School aged youth on mission trips for approximately 20 years. Over the last 12 years I have used GMT. They are by far the best I have used. Their programing is Christ centered and thought provoking.”

Terry O'Hanlon

Workcamp Attendee

“Been on Group Mission Trips for about 15 years! It is a tremendous program and gets kids (and adults!) to participate actively in the expansion of God's Kingdom. The leadership, administration, and staff have been wonderful for each experience. My youth group (as well as myself) have been blessed continually throughout the years!”

“Summer 2019 was my first experience with GMT. I took a group of high schoolers to a South Dakota for home repair on a reservation, and a group of middle + high schoolers to Denver. Both trips were very organized and communication with staff was wonderful! We are excited to use Group again this year! ”

“One single review cannot describe the life-changing experience that can be had with GMT. Taking middle school and high school kids to an experience that is outside of 'normal' for most kids, helping revitalize communities, and meet people outside their current home and social media bubble is priceless... ”

Brian Anderson

“ I always found the trips well organized and managed, with staff that were dedicated to serving the community hosting the Workcamp, as well as the growth of the youth involved. Having seen the positive outcomes for all involved, I sought out opportunities to continue my involvement with Group Mission Trips after my son graduated from high school.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate.

For Workcamps & Week of Hope

  • Due to liability, under-aged participants will be sent home at their own expense ( NO babies or any children under the required age).
  • Only registered participants are permitted at the lodging facility and on the project sites.
  • No special skills are required.
  • 19 or 20 year olds are welcome to attend as participants! Remember that  only those that are 21 or older will be considered “adults”  at camp and count in your 1 adult to 5 youth required ratio.

Will our group be working together?

We normally split groups up into work crews.  But, we are willing to work with your group on how you’d like to split into crews. Our work crews are made up of six people with usually one or two adults and four or five youth--typically each person from a different church. If you’d like to have your youth meet new friends and develop friendships outside of your youth group, then allow us to split up your group. If you have specific church safety rules that require your group to be together, we are more than happy to arrange that for your group as well. Our top priority is to partner with you to arrange the best experience for your youth group and help you meet your ministry goals.

What about safety?

Safety is our top priority!

  • We require groups to bring 1 adult (21 or older) for every 5 participants that are under 21 years of age.
  • We require participants that are 18 and older be screened and background-checked by their church. Their pastor signs off that they meet Group Mission Trips' requirements and that they are approved to attend.
  • Every staff member has been screened, background-checked, and reference checked by Group Mission Trips.
  • For overall protection, we have separate shower times designated for participants that are 17 and younger from those that are 18 and older.
  • We review safety procedures at camp.
  • Participants are not required to do any work that they consider unsafe.
  • Although we do serve in needy areas, we require crews to stay together at all times. No one should ever be left alone and all participants are back at the lodging facility by their designated check in time.
  • Group Mission Trips' staff visit the crews every day so they are aware of where a crew is working and any issues in the area.
  • Every crew has the direct phone number to the GMT office and directions to the closest hospital. If an injury occurs on the project site, and is not serious, GMT staff will contact the youth leader and coordinate any transportation needed. If the injury is serious, the adult on site will call 911 and GMT staff will offer support and ensure needed medical forms are delivered to hospital.
  • Each crew will have a small first aid kit and a bigger one for every vehicle.

The safety of your group is a top priority for us, as we’re sure it is for you. In all the areas we serve, we take extra precautions to make sure you or your group is as safe as possible. Guided by our local, experienced ministry staff partners, we avoid situations that are inherently dangerous. We’re also proactive by choosing lodging facilities and transportation that are safe and reliable. Our mission trip advisors are glad to answer further safety questions.

What about transportation?

For Domestic trips

  • Groups must provide transportation to and from the mission trip as well as daily to and from the sites.
  • All vehicles must be available for transportation to and from the sites. (Mileage or fuel costs are not reimbursed for any transportation costs.)
  • Vehicles with a minimum capacity of six passengers are requested, with seat belts. While adults will be driving their vehicles, they typically will not be transporting a crew that includes their own youth members. Typically, the youth from your group will be traveling in other vehicles with their crews.
  • Due to rough terrain and narrow roads, there are some locations that are labeled “Not Bus Accessible”. If you are serving at one of these, you’ll need to plan on bringing smaller vehicles.

What will we be doing?

For Workcamps

Your participants will provide home repairs at no cost for elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged people who need your help. Work crews typically serve the same resident for the entire trip, creating an environment where meaningful relationships develop.

Most projects are designed to be completed during the trip, allowing your group to experience the satisfaction of a job well done. You’ll serve the needs of others through projects like interior and exterior painting, building or repairing porches and wheelchair ramps, building or repairing steps, weatherization and other home repairs. No skills are needed!

For Week of Hope

Be ready to tackle any project and expect to interact each day with local residents from the community.  Crews typically serve at the same organization for the entire camp (or at the most 2 organizations), creating an environment where meaningful relationships develop.

Projects could include working with children at a day camp, serving at a food bank or homeless shelter, leading a Vacation Bible School, improving the homes of people in need, assisting the elderly, tutoring struggling kids, working with disabled children, facilitating a sports camp, and/or serving churches and other human service organizations in different ways. If there are any minor repair projects, we may ask your group to bring a few small hand tools and paint brushes.

Where do we stay?

For Workcamps Classic

A Workcamp can hold up to 400 participants and we house them all typically at a middle or high school. Group Mission Trip staff transforms the facility into a home away from home–there will be a separate boy’s hall and girl’s hall, a cafeteria for meals, adequate bathrooms and showers, and either a gym or auditorium for programs.

Participants need to bring twin-size air mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags or other bedding to sleep on classroom floors. Youth groups are assigned to sleeping rooms together, gender separate. Sleeping rooms may be shared with other youth groups, depending on the size of groups and the size of the room.

Registered groups can see more information about their lodging facility online on their Customer Account under Lodging Info. The primary contact will have access to the lodging facility’s address.

For Workcamps Flex

Workcamp Flex does not include lodging. It has all the outstanding elements of our Workcamp Classic but at a more affordable price, allowing you more flexibility in what you eat and where you sleep.

A Week of Hope can hold up to 100 participants and we house them all typically at a local church. Group Mission Trips' staff transforms the facility into a home away from home–there will be a separate boy’s hall and girl’s hall, a space for meals, adequate bathrooms and showers, and a space for the programs.

Participants need to bring twin-size air mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags or other bedding to sleep on floors. Youth groups are assigned to sleeping rooms together, gender separate. Sleeping rooms may be shared with other youth groups, depending on the size of groups and the size of the room.

What is the menu? What if there are special dietary needs?

For Workcamps and Week of Hope

Meals will consist of hot breakfasts, picnic-style lunches, and hot dinners. All meals will be prepared for participants by kitchen staff. Picnic-style lunches will be assembled in the mornings and brought to work sites. The first provided meal is dinner on Sunday and the last meal is breakfast on Saturday. IMPORTANT NOTE: Dinner is NOT provided on Wednesday, youth groups have free time this day and dinner is on their own.

For registered groups:  If you have a participant that has to eat gluten-free--please let us know. We can have a few gluten free options at camp, but need to know in advance to plan. The sample menu is located on your customer account, under Helpful Resources, and under Schedule, Menu, and Packing. Share this with your participants so they can start planning. Participants with special diets or allergies are welcome to bring their own food items to fill in as needed during the week. Please know that we do have peanut butter on the menu. Group Mission Trips is unable to guarantee there will not be any cross-contamination during meal preparation by kitchen staff. There will be a staff member available at camp who will be able to answer any questions about food.

Workcamp Flex provides only lunch at your Work Site. You choose what you eat for breakfast and dinner each day.

What are the programs like?

Focused on Jesus.  Our goal is to point people to Jesus. Programs focus on Bible passages and daily themes that challenge us to respond to Jesus in ways we will never forget.

Interactive . People learn better by doing. Participants will be involved in sharing, speaking, acting, reflecting...not just sitting and watching.

Relevant.  Through creative multimedia, thought provoking sound and video, our programs are designed to reach everyone.

Former MLB Star Darryl Strawberry Praises God for ‘His Amazing Grace’ After Suffering Heart Attack

Bishop accused of setting his church on fire faces decades in prison, pope francis tells ukraine that there is ‘no shame in negotiating’, injured israeli reservists join jerusalem marathon, share what they wish the world knew about the war, jeremy camp’s wife reports his heart surgery was a ‘success’, 14 ideas for high-impact youth missionary trips.

youth missionary trips

For many Christian teens, a highlight of their time in youth ministry is venturing out on youth missionary trips with their friends. And while traveling to another country, state or city is always exciting, the definition of “missions” has expanded greatly in recent years.

No matter your group’s size, budget or ability levels, options are available for youth missionary trips that meet your specific needs. Some creative ideas involve little travel and little-to-no money or planning.

Start smaller with these 9 service ideas—and read on when you’re ready for bigger youth missionary trips:

1. reach out to people experiencing homelessness..

Homelessness is a huge problem in America, especially in urban areas. Students can meet people’s tangible, day-to-day needs by distributing baggies, backpacks or even water bottles filled with hygiene items and nutritious snacks.

2. Place Scripture-filled sticky notes inside library books.

For an in-town adventure that offers glimpses of hope and cheer, simply write encouraging Bible verses on a bunch of sticky notes. Then visit a local library as a youth group and put the notes on the inside covers of books.

3. Hold a pay-it-forward service day.

Dedicate a day to performing acts of kindness throughout your community. As students serve people, have them hand out cards with a Pay-It-Forward Challenge , encouraging recipients to perform a kind deed for someone else.

4. Bless healthcare workers.

Gather small gifts and homemade goodies, and then deliver them to a nearby hospital or clinic. Buy plain white paper gift bags in bulk and have kids cut out and glue a red paper cross on each bag. Medical workers will be uplifted by this act of care and support.

5. Clean up a local cemetery.

Tending to graves is an unusual but very useful (and touching) act of service. While you and your kids are pulling weeds and picking up trash, you can have interesting Bible-based discussions about life, death, heaven, ancestors and the faith legacies that people pass on to others.

6. Sow seeds of God’s love.

As a youth group, visit a park or public garden and hand out packets of seeds . Beforehand, stick positive messages on the packets, such as “Grow in God’s love” and “Stay rooted in God.”

7. Host a special event.

Have students organize an event for the church or community. Ideas include a carnival, a craft fair, a game night and a sports clinic. Or kids can hold a fundraiser and donate all the proceeds toward a special charity project.

8. Volunteer for VBS.

If your kids aren’t already involved with vacation Bible school, encourage them to volunteer as pairs, teams or large groups. Take this one step further by volunteering to help at other VBS programs in your community, especially at smaller churches. Students with creative skills can take the lead on sets, stages, signs and decorations.

9. Brighten the day for shoppers.

Get permission from a local dollar-store to hide some dollar bills on shelves. With just a little cash, you can produce some big smiles among random shoppers.

When you’re ready for more travel, here are 5 resources for taking Christian youth missionary trips:

1. group mission trips.

Students work together to complete service projects that have a lasting impact on residents and communities. Jesus-centered programs and devotions spark deep conversations that help participants grow in their faith.

2. LeaderTreks

This organization turns typical youth missionary trip activities into leadership laboratories. Youth group members gain real-life leadership experience through service projects, relational ministry activities and age-appropriate responsibilities.

3. Mission Discovery

For youth missionary trips focused on servanthood and discipleship, this group offers one- to two-week options. The work sites are often “desperate communities” where students can meet tangible needs and, just as importantly, provide love and hope to people.

Teenage disciples of Jesus can travel throughout the world and make more disciples in the process. This group arranges for students to assist with everything from creation care to church planting and community development.

5. City Service Mission

This organization specializes in urban youth missionary trips, immersing teens in cities so they can meet real needs. Young people also learn what city dwellers face and how to overcome challenging circumstances.

What is a mission trip?

A mission trip is an international volunteering opportunity centered around collaborative efforts with local communities to provide essential support where it is most needed. These trips can be either religious or non-religious in nature, aiming to uplift individuals, local communities, and natural environments across the globe. IVHQ offers inclusive volunteer abroad programs that welcome participants of all ages and life stages.

Through IVHQ’s diverse range of mission trips , individuals can make a tangible impact while fostering new friendships, discovering diverse cultures, and broadening their horizons—all while contributing to the well-being of those who require assistance the most.

Why do people go on mission trips?

Mission trips are a popular way to combine your desire to travel and see with world with your motivation to give back and make a difference in the world. While some people see mission trips as an opportunity to put their faith into action, others go on mission trips for a variety of non-religious reasons, including:

To make a difference: Many people go on mission trips make a positive impact in the world through providing support to communities in a range of different ways. This could involve volunteering to teach English , building schools or homes , providing medical care , volunteering with animals or supporting environmental conservation .

To gain a new perspective: Traveling to a new country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be a life-changing and transformative experience. Mission trips allow you to see the world with fresh eyes and gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

To meet new people: Mission trips offer an opportunity to connect with people from all around the world. International volunteers work together towards a common goal, often forming life-long friendships and connections along the way.

To get out of your comfort zone : Mission trips are an opportunity to discover a new sense of purpose by stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering new countries and cultures, and living like the locals. This can be equally challenging and rewarding! Taking a mission trip is an opportunity to growth as person, discover your strengths and weaknesses and redefine your purpose in life.

While people go on mission trips for a variety of reasons, at the heart of it is a desire to make a positive impact on the world, connect with others and build a better future together.

Quote from IVHQ Volunteer Ruth Cartwright - Childcare in Sri Lanka

I recently returned from a mission trip to Sri Lanka and it was everything I dreamt it would be. I lived with a family in the jungle next to the longest river in the country, volunteering in a disabled childcare center. I was so happy with the project and had a wonderful - and sometimes challenging - experience. I would recommend this mission trip to anyone who wants to travel alone.

How much does it cost to go on a mission trip?

The cost of going on a mission trip varies depending on the destination and duration of the trip. IVHQ makes mission trips accessible to volunteers worldwide through affordable volunteer program fees and flexible durations.

For example, the cost of a 2-week mission trip with IVHQ to Tanzania is US$415, while a 4-week trip to India is US$585. These costs cover accommodation, meals, airport pick-up, and in-country support from IVHQ’s local team.

Additional costs that volunteers need to consider include the IVHQ registration fee , airfares, travel insurance, and any necessary visas or vaccinations. However, IVHQ provides detailed information and support to help volunteers prepare for their mission trip and manage these additional costs.

It’s worth noting that IVHQ also offers a range of fundraising ideas and resources to help volunteers cover the costs of their trip. For example, volunteers can create a fundraising page via IVHQ’s fundraising partner and share it with friends and family to collect donations.

IVHQ’s fees are transparent and inclusive, making it easy for volunteers to plan and budget for their trip without breaking the bank.

FLY’s mission is to partner with youth to unlock their potential, disrupt the pipeline to prison, and advance justice in California and beyond.

missionary trips for youth

When FLY was founded in 2000, we were guided by the input of youth in the juvenile justice system to create programs grounded in legal education, mentoring, and leadership training. Over the past 22 years, we have continuously sought the input of young people impacted by the justice system to grow and evolve our program offerings. We seek to elevate the voices of young people to make our systems more equitable, just, and humane. We are on a trajectory that aspires to move from service for some to justice for all .

Park Ridge church preparing for youth mission to the Bahamas

T ravel to the Bahamas is typically dedicated to tourism and vacation, Park Ridge Community Church Assistant Pastor Mollie Foster knows, but said a church group’s upcoming trip will be focused “on the other side of the island.”

The church is partnering with Praying Pelican Mission, a Minnesota nonprofit, for its weeklong youth mission from June 8 to 14, according to Foster. The church is taking 40 Park Ridge youth between middle and high school ages, as well as 13 chaperones, to oversee the trip. The group will focus on construction, working with kids, learning how to make local cuisine and visiting people who cannot leave their homes.

Foster said she made the decision to go to the Bahamas in collaboration with the youth committee and the church’s senior pastor before the U.S. State Department put out a warning of caution due to crime in certain areas. The church puts together a mission each year and cycles between local, urban, rural and international missions. The last three were in Knott County, Kentucky; Denver, Milwaukee and the Chicago area.

“I am really proud of our kids for saying yes to this opportunity when they have a million other things that they could be doing in their summertime,” said Foster. “Even though they’ll be in the Bahamas, they’ll be sweating and working hard and being in uncomfortable positions and stretched outside their comfort zones.”

Foster said in the past school year, students learned about equity and equality and that the Bahamas has great luxuries available to tourists but also has high levels of poverty for people who live on the island and need to rebuild when natural disasters like hurricanes occur.

Foster said Praying Pelican would take care of the details of where the mission will be and has established ties with communities in the Bahamas.

On Jan. 24, the U.S. Department of State put out a travel advisory for increased caution for Americans visiting the Bahamas. The advisory said there was increased crime on the New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands and there is “gang-on-gang” violence that affects the local population of those islands. The Department of State has four advisory levels, with the Bahamas at level two and more hostile countries, like North Korea and Russia, at level four.

“Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence,” the advisory read.

Foster said the Department of State put out the advisory only after the church made the decision to go to the island and that Praying Pelican would not send the mission to an area that is not safe for them.

Foster said the cost for the 53 people to participate in the mission would be just over $100,000. Each person would pay $1,000 to Praying Pelican for food and lodging, and airfare would cost around $900 a person, according to Foster.

The church is doing a Bahamas-themed fundraiser to help volunteers fund the mission. The church usually does a pumpkin patch fundraiser that brings in $10,000, said Foster, but this time the church is organizing a “ Bahama Bash ” silent auction with reggae music and food scheduled for March 3 at the church, 100 Courtland Ave., Park Ridge.

Donors can sign up online. Foster said the items auctioned off would be donated from local businesses and would include items like gift cards and tickets to local events like beer tastings.

The church has a goal of $27,000 for the fundraiser. Foster said the funds would be split evenly among the 53 participants to reduce the costs they would have to shoulder for the mission.
