Family guy: 5 celebrities who voiced themselves (& 5 who did not).

Family Guy tends to include celebrities into its show, typically to poke fun at them. Some of these celebrities voice themselves, while others do not.

Family Guy , Seth MacFarlane's animated hit on FOX, has grown in popularity over the past two decades, with many celebrity guests providing their own voices. Some have played an animated counterpart to themselves, a fictional character and in some cases, portrayed another famous person. When a show has been on for eighteen seasons, the level of talent is usually quite high.

As animation is solely a visual medium, it can sometimes be hard to tell whether the actual person is doing their voice, especially if the show found a talented mimic. Read on for five celebrities who have played themselves on  Family Guy and five who have not.

Did: Adam West

tom cruise family guy voice

As the late star of the 1960s  Batman television series, West played a fictionalized version of himself, Mayor West, from 2000 up until he died in 2017 aged 88.   In the context of the show, this character was the eccentric, childlike mayor of Quahog, the central location of  Family Guy .

Additionally, Mayor West also had a connection to the Griffin family through his marriage to Carol Pewterschmidt, Lois Griffin's younger sister. He was responsible for numerous hilarious moments and lines throughout the years. After the real West's death, the show's High School was posthumously named in his honor.

Did Not: John Williams

tom cruise family guy voice

Williams is an acclaimed composer, known for many iconic film soundtracks. These include  Jaws , Star Wars ,  Superman ,  Harry Potter ,  and  ET . Overall, while Williams' name or voice may not be well-known to many people, his work is very recognizable.

RELATED: Top 10 Funniest Moments From Family Guy Season 3

Williams has appeared in  Family Guy on several occasions. However, he did not provide his voice. Instead, actor Bruce McGill played the composer.

Did: Connie Britton

tom cruise family guy voice

Britton is an actress/singer known for starring roles on various popular, long-running television series. These include the coming of age sports drama  Friday Night Lights , the  anthology horror  American Horror Story ,  and musical drama  Nashville .

Britton has also voiced herself on  Family Guy . One example is a memorable cutaway gag in "Baking Bad" (Season 13, Episode 3) in which Peter Griffin eats Britton's hair while comparing it to Lois' homebaked cookies. Britton has also played herself in "Brian The Closer" (Season 13, Episode 5).

Did Not: David Letterman

tom cruise family guy voice

The former host of   Late Show With David Letterman ,  this man interviewed a vast number of celebrity guests during his two-decade tenure. To be more precise, Letterman presided over the show for 4,261 episodes. His stint began in 1993 and lasted until 2015.

RELATED: 10 Best Meta Jokes In Family Guy That Some Fans Missed

Despite being so well-known across the United States, Letterman did not provide his voice on  Family Guy . Although his fictional, animated counterpart appeared more than once, it was always impressionist Dave Van Dam doing the voice.

Did: Gene Simmons

tom cruise family guy voice

Simmons, the frontman of rock band KISS, has appeared multiple times on  Family Guy , in his full performance attire. In the story, he is a past lover of Lois Griffin before finding fame as a musician. Since  Family Guy is a comedy and not a straight drama, protagonist Peter Griffin (Lois' husband) takes pride in the fact that the two slept together, rather than being annoyed.

Providing his voice with each appearance, some of the plots that the animated Simmons has been involved in include playing at a fictitious Kiss-based festival in Quahog, supporting the Griffin family's band, and appearing for a fourth-wall-breaking curtain call at the end of an episode.

Did Not: Patrick Swayze

tom cruise family guy voice

The late star of classic films including   Dirty Dancing and  Ghost,  Swayze was at the height of his fame throughout the 1980s, achieving status as a "sex symbol" with his leading man roles. He won numerous accolades such as a Golden Globe nomination for each of the aforementioned films. In 2009, Swayze died of pancreatic cancer at 57.

In Swayze's appearances on  Family Guy , which occurred on more than one occasion, it was never him doing the voice. While his animated counterpart visited Peter Griffin from beyond the grave and depicted an alternate ending to  Dirty Dancing , the voice was provided, in Swayze's last episode to date, by his brother Don.

Did: Bryan Cranston

Bryan Cranston Family Guy

Cranston is a diverse actor known for several roles across different genres. Most notably, he has played cancer-stricken chemistry teacher turned drug lord Walter White/Heisenberg on  Breaking Bad  and Hal, the lovable if the somewhat childish father of Malcolm and his siblings on  Malcolm In The Middle.    He has appeared in other shows including  Seinfeld, The X-Files, and How I Met Your Mother .

On  Family Guy , while Cranston has played fictional characters, he also played himself on one occasion, appearing in live-action during the episode "Herpe, The Love Sore" (Season 12, Episode 16). Cranston also reprised his role as Hal in "I Take Thee Quagmire" (Season 4, Episode 21) and Peter's boss Bert in "Pawtucket Pete" (Season 17, Episode 9).

Did Not: Shonda Rhimes

tom cruise family guy voice

Since 2005, Rhimes has been known for creating and/or producing a string of successful dramas for ABC. These include  Grey's Anatomy , Scandal ,  and  Private Practice .  Rhimes is also an executive producer of  How To Get Away With Murder.

In "Emmy- Winning Episode" (Season 16, Episode 1), Rhimes appears among other celebrities who are against  Family Guy winning an Emmy as well as white actors voicing characters from an ethnic minority. For this purpose, she was voiced by actress/writer/comedian Frances Callier.

Did: James Woods

Woods, a two-time Academy Award nominee, and two-time Emmy winner is a recurring presence in  Family Guy . As well as the local High School formerly being named after the actor, he has also been a thorn in Peter Griffin's side. In the Agatha Christie inspired episode "And Then There Were None" (Season 9, Episode 1), Woods is seemingly killed-off, only to return in a later season.

RELATED: Mila Kunis' 10 Best Roles, According To IMDB

In addition to playing himself as a character in the story, Woods also filled the role of "host" of the episode "Inside Family Guy" (Season 15, Episode 4) in which the audience is shown the day-to-day operations of how the fictitious  Family Guy show-within-a-show is run. However, in the context of the episode, Woods still interacted with the characters as real people.

Did Not: Miley Cyrus

tom cruise family guy voice

Once known as the star of Disney sitcom  Hannah Montana . Cyrus has successfully reinvented herself to have a steady singing and acting career as an adult. She has sung in many different genres including country, hip hop, and pop.

On  Family Guy , she was voiced by Candace Marie Celmer, a fellow actress/singer-songwriter. The character of Stewie Griffin is depicted as being a fan of Cyrus and her alter-ego, Hannah Montana. Celmer reprised the role in an episode of  The Cleveland Show.

Family Guy Characters Voiced by Seth MacFarlane, Ranked

Here are the most iconic characters voiced by jack-of-all-trades Seth MacFarlane in his never-ending hit series Family Guy.

Seth MacFarlane is the man of a thousand voices, quite literally. On just the hit animated series on FOX, Family Guy , MacFarlane is credited with over 700 voices throughout its 23 years. The series has made audiences laugh since 1999 and much of that is to do with MacFarlane’s creative ideas for characters. Coming from an animation background, he worked on hit series such as Johnny Bravo. But it was Family Guy that sent him and his voices into the stratosphere.

Whether minor or major roles, his voice acting implements something new to each character so that no one sounds cut-and-paste. In addition, MacFarlane has also provided his many voices to the series American Dad, The Cleveland Show. But there is something about his characters on Spooner Street that are so iconic and beloved by the viewers. For almost 400 episodes, the Griffin family has warmed the hearts of millions. But which of MacFarlane’s characters are the most popular?

Seamus

Let’s start with the playful pirate with pegs… everywhere. The man is literally made of wood except for his face. Seamus appears on-screen at just the right times to deliver some random sea-based humor that never fails to execute effective comedic relief. He has been a part of the series since the third season. Ever since, he has told different stories of how he lost his entire body. A sea serpent, a shark, a shipwreck — we will never truly know.

9 Tom Tucker

Tom Tucker

Tom Tucker is the news anchor we wish we would see on our own nightly news. His authenticity and sometimes hot-mic moments come at perfect, unexpected times. He does not seem to care about offending anyone in the community, or losing his job on Channel 5 News.

Related: Here Are Some of the Best Dark Comedies Ever Made

Perhaps one of his most iconic moments came in Mother Tucker , the second episode of the fifth season (originally made for season four). This episode parodies the Best Picture-winning film Kramer vs. Kramer, where Tom Tucker marries Peter’s mom and becomes a father to Peter. This of course is very short-lived.

8 Carter Pewterschmidt

Carter

The ridiculously rich father, grandfather, and businessman we wish we had the honor to know. Carter Pewterschmidt , father to Lois, is Peter’s less than loving father-in-law who never misses a jab. Carter may be an old man, but he is as sharp as a tack. Especially when it comes to ripping on his son-in-law, Carter never ceases a moment to get the last laugh.

He brags of his wealth, flaunts his capitalist mentality , but also has a large heart. This is most notably seen in the tenth episode of the seventh season, Welcome Back Carter , where he cheats on his wife and begs for her forgiveness.

7 Kool-Aid Guy

Kool-Aid Guy in Family Guy

He’s just the Kool-Aid Guy , but his sporadic appearances make him a stand-out of the series. It is noted that Family Guy went ahead and used the likeliness of the Kool-Aid Guy without permission from Kool-Aid. He first appeared on the pilot episode, bursting through the walls of a courtroom spouting his famous “Oh yeah,” catchphrase at the height of the drama. This moment was later seen again in the episode Back to the Pilot , ten years later. We got to see what happened before this moment, and afterwards when Stewie and Brian time traveled from the future to interfere.

God

While Family Guy parodies and makes obvious jabs at many religious organizations, the Christian version of God stands out the most. God, in this series, is just a guy trying to chill in the heavens. He is constantly burdened by the mundanity of humanity, and we constantly see Him in a fit of rage, which isn’t too far off from how He is portrayed in religious texts.

Related: Funniest and Best South Park Episodes

However, He is truly a comedic character because it is presented in a way that totally deviates from any other iteration of a god-like character especially on an animated series. Even South Park portrays God as this high and mighty mythical being with all knowing power.

5 Dr. Hartman

Family Guy

Yes, Dr. Hartman has the exact same voice as Carter Pewterschmidt. It is even noted in the episode where Carter and Dr. Hartman have their first extended interaction. They nod to the fact that their voices are similar, and we just have to deal with it:

Dr. Hartman - “Seems lazy doesn't it?” Carter - “Well there’s only so many voices in the world, some of them are bound to be similar.”

It is reported that Dr. Hartman is named after friend of Seth MacFarlane and creator of The Fairly Odd Parents, Butch Hartman. In addition, Dr. Hartman has shown that he truly cares for his patients despite his rather lackadaisical demeanor. When Brian was willing to sacrifice himself to give Peter his kidneys, Dr. Hartman came through and gave Peter one of his, saving Brian.

4 Brian Griffin

Brian Griffin

Pretentious, egotistical, and the star of his own world, we nonetheless love this dog like he is one of our own. Brian may be the first humanoid character that we look at like a human being. He drinks with Peter and his friends, he has aspirations of being a writer, but he also has been one half of the heart of the series. He and Stewie have a bond that is possibly the most emotional part of the entire series. Their Road to… episodes are the most beloved, and the Brian and Stewie episode which features no music is arguably the best episode of the series.

After killing off Brian for a few episodes, MacFarlane wrote on Twitter in response to the backlash, describing how this decision was made to show the sanctity of life. It was done during the holiday season and meant to be a symbol to cherish life.

“I mean, you didn’t think we’d kill off Brian, did you? Jesus, we’d have to be f*****g high [...] And thus endeth our warm, fuzzy holiday lesson: Never take those you love for granted, for they could be gone in a flash.”

3 Glenn Quagmire

Quagmire in Family Guy

Who else but Quagmire ?! He’s Quagmire, love him or hate him he is the series' giggity, giggity goofball who is also an extreme pervert. While it is meant for laughs, he pushes the boundaries of what is considered socially acceptable, even in animation. From drugging, stalking, or just plain gawking, Quagmire represents all there is to hate about toxic men.

But why do we love this character so much? From his inspirations being from old radio commercials and his weird '70s-style bedroom, he had this vintage quality to him that we cannot get enough of. But we wouldn’t want to be in the same room as the guy.

2 Peter Griffin

Peter Griffin in Family Guy

Everyone knows at least one Peter Griffin , a loudmouthed New England drunk with no filter whatsoever. However, this family man is the central driving force of this series. As outlandish as his shenanigans are, whether it's buying a horse or starting his own country, Peter is as lovable as he is undeniably obnoxious. Nevertheless, he is shown to always love his family, his wife, and the value of friendship.

1 Stewie Griffin

Stewie in Family Guy

Lastly, and most notably, Stewie Griffin is the highlight of the entire Family Guy cast of characters. He is an evil child genius , but also has a soft interior. While he is more “cartoony” and comedic than his original debut in the pilot (which is even joked about in Back to the Pilot ,) Stewie continues to subvert expectations and do things a baby would never do. Time machines, murder, interdimensional travel — what more could one ask for from a two-year-old?

Video: Seth MacFarlane does the Family Guy voices on The Graham Norton Show

Tony Cuddihy

His Kermit the Frog doing the Taken speech isn’t bad either.

Seth MacFarlane was on Graham Norton alongside Charlize Theron, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt last night, and this clip is absolute quality from start to finish.

The Family Guy creator ran through all the most popular voices from the show, including Peter, Stewie and Quagmire, but saves the best for last as he channels Liam Neeson through the medium of Kermit the Frog.

Tom Cruise, meanwhile, does a mean Donald Duck.

Family guy season 14 episode 2 review: papa has a rollin' son.

tom cruise family guy voice

I spent more time shaking my head and rolling my eyes than I did laughing during  Family Guy Season 14 Episode 2 .

And the only times I did laugh was when Stewie was on the screen.

While I get what the social message was, Joe and Peter's story just fell short. I felt that the writers were trying too hard to toe the line between seriousness and humor. It would have been better had they just let loose and gone all--out offensive, because they certainly had no problem doing that with Stewie's story.

But maybe that's because they were making fun of Tom Cruise again, and who can't laugh at Tom Cruise?

Joe's Dad - Family Guy

The main storyline centered around Joe's estranged relationship with his father. Once the gang learns the reason for the estrangement and everything that follows, Peter comes up with an idiotic idea involving a horse to fool Joe's dad, Bud. For some reason, it reminded me of the stupid coupon chicken gag and all I could do was roll my eyes. It wasn't funny. And that's pretty much how the rest of this storyline went.

After Bud arrives in Quahog, I was expecting more. For a guy who is supposed to have such serious issues with handicapped people to cause Joe to not have contact with him for so long, the guy seemed pretty tame. If the writers can make comments about Jesus Christ and black people like they did in the beginning of the episode, then why hold back when it comes to handicapped people? I found it tiresome that the writers decided to go down the middle of the road on this one. Go all the way or don't go down the road at all.

The story continues to soft--pedal around the handicap theme for the rest of the episode, trying to be funny, but failing, finally ending with Joe no longer hiding his handicap and his father finally accepting people with handicaps. It all seemed like a rather long road to get to the point and the main message.

Well, dad, I can tell you from experience, it's only wen you worst fears come true that you get to find out how strong you really are. Joe Permalink: Well, dad, I can tell you from experience, it's only wen you worst fears come true that you...

Stewie's story on the other hand got to the point rather quickly. Stewie finds out he's going to be short as an adult and is having a hard time dealing with it, until he meets Tom Cruise, who in his crazy ways makes Stewie feel better.

Stewie: Doesn't it boether you being an adult man who's that short, 'cause the doctor said that's where I'm headed. Tom Cruise: No way, man. In the middle of the word short is "or". Or gives you a choice, and I choose not to be short. Stewie: Wow. You need a road map for that one. Permalink: Wow. You need a road map for that one.

The underlying theme, of course, being that short people are handicapped too. This storyline worked better because it wasn't trying to be serious. Sure, the writers were making fun of Tom Cruise, but it was funny. There were some serious digs at the guy, but they were still funny. And it got better as the story progressed, especially after Stewie finds out he's not going to be short after all and tries to blow off Cruise, who then becomes Tiny Tom Cruise, the stalker.  It was humorous because I felt that everything was being done with a wink.

I didn't get that feeling with Peter and Joe's storyline.

Overall, the episode didn't quite meet my expectations. I watch Family Guy to laugh and the laughs were few and far between.

Francis Ford Coppola shares The Outsiders audition footage, with young Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, and more

The audition process for the 1983 film asked each actor to read lines for every role.

Francis Ford Coppola is celebrating The Outsiders with an adorable blast from Hollywood's past.

More than 40 years after its release, the 1983 adaptation of S.E. Hinton's classic novel remains highly regarded, in part because of the many young cast members who would go on to achieve major success. In honor of those star-making performances, the film's director shared footage of the auditions that started it all — including the likes of Patrick Swayze , Tom Cruise , Emilio Estevez , Diane Lane , Ralph Macchio , Matt Dillon , and Rob Lowe .

"42 years ago we cast The Outsiders in a unique way," Coppola wrote in an Instagram post Wednesday. "We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles."

He continued: "It was interesting because each of them was watching their competition, so while it could've been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one. There emerged the natural respect and sense of colleagueship among them. The result worked beautifully and reminded me of my days as a camp counselor."

As promised, the footage features the actors reading the parts of various characters from the coming-of-age story, including roles they wouldn't go on to play. Anthony Michael Hall appears in one audition tape, reading for the role of main character Ponyboy — ultimately, it was C. Thomas Howell who booked the part.

A few of the stars chimed in with comments on Coppola's post, reminiscing about the experience. "The people that came to these auditions… so many went on to have great careers," Howell wrote. "Amazing."

"These auditions and this film experience still inform me today," Macchio wrote, thanking the Oscar-winning filmmaker, while Lowe added, "Feels like this was just yesterday!"

The film, like the novel, revolves around rival teen gangs in a rural Oklahoma town: the poor Greasers and the wealthy Socs. After Ponyboy and Johnny (Macchio) get into a deadly brawl, they're forced to go into hiding as both gangs come to terms with the consequences of their violent lives.

The Outsiders stars previously spoke of the intense audition process, filled to the brim with up-and-coming talent, while reflecting on the experience for EW's 2021 oral history of the movie .

"Timothy Hutton, Sean Penn, Dennis Quaid, Mickey Rourke… it was a movie everybody wanted to be in," Macchio recalled. "Leif Garrett was probably the most famous guy who walked in."

Garrett, who eventually landed the role of Bob Sheldon, remarked, "It was all day long, and it was a process of elimination. I really wanted to be Ponyboy, because that's the role. But I wasn't right for it. I'm not that greasy."

Coppola concluded, "It was competitive. But it only spurred them on."

Footage of the auditions was also included as bonus material in previous home-video releases. You can watch the clips shared by Coppola above.
