Best cruises from Florida: Our top 9 trips from the Sunshine State

Megan duBois

Cruises from Florida are the most popular options for travelers who wish to sail from the United States. It was only this year that Miami was dethroned as the busiest cruise port in the world — replaced by rival Florida home port, Port Canaveral.

Not only do cruises from Florida allow you to see some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas, but they also allow travelers to experience some of the biggest and best cruise ships sailing right now. The largest cruise ship afloat, Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas, sails from Port Canaveral; family-friendly rival Disney Wish, the newest Disney cruise ship in a decade, also home ports in Florida.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Families planning multigenerational getaways, couples seeking child-free vacations and groups of friends looking to have a good time can all find their perfect ship and itinerary departing from one of Florida's six departure ports.

To give you a taste of the diversity of options available from the Sunshine State, here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

Wonder of the Seas to the Western Caribbean

cruises from florida for 3 days

Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean's flagship and the largest cruise ship in the world, departs weekly from Port Canaveral (the cruise port closest to Orlando). The ship sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries, stopping at tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

While the islands offer plenty of fun in the sun, the ship itself is filled with tons of family-friendly activities. Siblings or parents and kids can race each other to the bottom of the twin waterslides, named Typhoon and Cyclone. If you prefer to stay dry, hop into the Ultimate Abyss tunnel slide, where riders will glide down 10 stories of darkness before bottoming out on the ship's Boardwalk.

Kids ages 6 months to 17 years old have their own hangouts with dedicated programming supervised by fun counselors. While the kids play with new friends, adults can veg out in the glass-encased Solarium, relaxing on padded loungers or in a bubbling hot tub.

When it's time to come together for a meal, you'll please all palates at The Mason Jar , one of Royal Caribbean's newest restaurants that highlights Southern comfort food. The menu teems with tasty dishes like fried chicken, gumbo and po'boys that will leave you completely satisfied. Brunch here comes with a side of live country music.

Freedom of the Seas to the Bahamas

cruises from florida for 3 days

Cruisers who are loyal to Royal Caribbean or those who want to test the waters with the brand without the commitment of a seven-night sailing can enjoy short, three-night sailings on Freedom of the Seas out of Miami.

The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise. At this private Bahamian beach resort, cruisers can ride the slides at Thrill Water Park, rent a beachside cabana for a mix of shade and sun, or float about in a sheltered lagoon. A barbecue lunch is included, and passengers can utilize their onboard drink package.

The 4,635-passenger ship provides fun around every corner. Challenge one another to a round of minigolf, show off your skills on the FlowRider surf simulator or test your muscle on the rock climbing wall. Entertainment on Freedom of the Seas ranges from Royal Caribbean's iconic ice skating shows to live music in the pub. Pool parties, outdoor movies and laser tag are also included with your cruise fare.

With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings.

No cruise is complete without great food, and this ship offers 11 different dining venues highlighting such cuisines as Italian, Mexican and Japanese.

Carnival Elation to the Bahamas

cruises from florida for 3 days

Carnival Elation is unique because it's the only ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville. Its four- and five-day sailings to the Bahamas stop at Nassau and a second destination that varies. Choose from cruises to Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays — the latter two are private beaches operated by the Carnival Corporation.

The 2,606-passenger cruise ship is one of Carnival Cruise Line 's smallest and oldest ships. Aboard the intimate vessel allows you to get to know the crew and other cruisers. Popular hangouts include Carnival's beloved Alchemy Bar, where you can order cocktails at a vintage pharmacy-themed bar.

For outdoor dining, head to Guy's Burger Joint, created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Order a loaded burger and perfectly golden-brown fries, then head to the Lido Deck near the pool for great people-watching.

Entertainment on this small ship is still plentiful. Cruisers can splash around at WaterWorks, the family-friendly water playground, or head up to the adults-only Serenity Retreat for a quieter experience. The Punchliner Comedy Club hosts a variety of comedians that will have kids and adults laughing throughout the night. Catch a live production in the main theater or sing along with the pianist at the popular Piano Bar.

Carnival Mardi Gras to the Eastern Caribbean

cruises from florida for 3 days

If you'd prefer to sample one of Carnival's newest and largest ships, you can sail from Port Canaveral on the line's Mardi Gras . Its Eastern Caribbean sailings visit island destinations like St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. Mardi Gras' six- to eight-night itineraries provide a good mix of sea days at the start and end of the sailings.

The impressive ship is known for its party atmosphere, which is highlighted by an onboard zone themed to New Orleans' French Quarter. Here, passengers will find Emeril's Bistro 1396, an homage to NOLA's cuisine developed in partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Don't miss the Brass Magnolia and the Fortune Teller bars, which start hopping when the sun goes down.

The Ultimate Playground on the ship's top deck is where adrenaline junkies and sports lovers will want to hang out. You'll get all the thrills with a ride on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, or take a lap around the elevated ropes course. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, minigolf and a full-size basketball court await.

Disney Magic to the Bahamas

cruises from florida for 3 days

When the summer of 2024 rolls around, Disney Magic will set sail from Disney Cruise Line 's newest home port in Florida, Fort Lauderdale. The ship's shorter three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries include a visit to Nassau and either Castaway Cay, Disney's stunning private island, or Lighthouse Point, Disney's newest island destination . Longer five-night sailings include a stop at both private beaches or a double dip at Castaway Cay, along with a day at Nassau.

Disney Magic is among Disney's smaller ships, but fans love it for its intimate size and fewer crowds. Beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome you aboard with hugs and photo ops throughout your sailing.

Guests rotate each night among the ship's three dining rooms, including Rapunzel's Royal Table — inspired by Disney's animated "Tangled." There's also Animator's Palate, an homage to Disney's animation studios. You'll have the same servers at all restaurants, so they get to know your family and your dining preferences. At night the Walt Disney Theater features Broadway-caliber shows, like "Tangled: The Musical."

Families looking for some time apart will love that Disney has an included kids club where younger cruisers can enjoy fun activities under the watchful eye of the ship's youth staff. The Oceaneer Club features themed areas like Andy's Room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's home at Pixie Hollow. Kids can also take superhero lessons from Thor. The Oceaneer Lab offers baking classes inspired by "Ratatouille" and sessions where kids learn how to draw their favorite Disney characters.

Adults can use their free time to savor a meal at the adults-only Italian restaurant, Palo, or kick back in the ship's multiple bars and live music venues.

Prefer to sail on a newer Disney ship? Check out Disney Wish , with three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau.

Holland America's Rotterdam to the Southern Caribbean

cruises from florida for 3 days

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam 's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West.

With just 2,668 guests onboard, Rotterdam is homey and charming with a touch of luxury. The ship doubles down on live music; a live band plays all the rock hits at the Rolling Stone Rock Room, while an eight-piece band gets everyone on their feet when they play R&B favorites at B.B. King's Blues Club. For some daytime activity, the competition is on at the ship's pickleball courts , where cruisers can take lessons or play in tournaments against their shipmates.

Expect impeccable dining at specialty restaurants like Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French-inspired restaurant from Holland America's master chef Rudi Sodamin; Canaletto, an Italian bistro offering all of the classics; and Tamarind, where diners can sample regional dishes from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. For daytime snacks, don't miss the Dutch pancake bites called poffertjes or the French fries with peanut dipping sauce.

Norwegian Encore to the Eastern Caribbean

cruises from florida for 3 days

If you're looking for a weeklong cruise out of Miami, consider sailing on Norwegian Encore to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and Tortola. Each island offers spectacular sandy beaches that give way to sparkling blue waters, plus options for water sports, museum visits and hikes to the top of lush mountaintops.

The itinerary also includes a stop at Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There you can enjoy a relaxing beach day, where all you have to worry about is getting back to the ship on time from the tender dock.

On board the ship, zip around the Encore Speedway in a go-kart, play laser tag in an Atlantis-themed arena, splash around the AquaPark or experience virtual reality games inside the Galaxy Pavilion. For a calmer diversion, purchase a pass to the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only retreat with lounge chairs, umbrellas and specialty food and drinks. The pass is good for the entire cruise, so you can come and go as you please.

There's a wide range of dining options, including complimentary and extra-charge restaurants. Belly up to the Local Bar and Grill for classic pub dishes and cocktails on tap. If you're willing to pay extra for a meal, Q Texas Smokehouse is worth a stop. The a la carte restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue and all the classic sides. After dinner service, the restaurant turns into a country dance club with a live band and an open dance floor.

Celebrity Apex to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

cruises from florida for 3 days

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex sets sail from Fort Lauderdale to some of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. From November 2023 through April 2024, Apex will offer weeklong sailings to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. Two sea days give you time to relax and have fun on the ship.

What makes this itinerary special is that it features later all-aboard times in San Juan and St. Maarten, allowing guests to see the islands as they come alive in the sunset glow.

Celebrity Apex is part of Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class of ships, with standout features like high-end design and modern touches. One of Apex's highlights is the Magic Carpet, a suspended lounge that hangs off the side of the ship. When it's positioned by the pool deck, you can stop in to sip cocktails; when it's at water level, it serves as a platform for easy boarding of tender boats.

There are lots of chic spots to chill with your travel companions. Savor some kebabs or a flatbread pizza among live plants in the ship's Rooftop Garden, then watch the sun sink into the sea at the aptly named Sunset Bar. Submerge yourself in a martini-shaped hot tub out on the pool deck or enjoy a dip on a rainy day in the covered adults-only Solarium.

With 29 different food and beverage options on Apex, cruisers will never be bored at meal times. Specialty dining includes Le Grand Bistro, themed after a traditional Parisian boulangerie-patisserie, and the Eden Restaurant, with its tasting menu of international dishes.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food, stick with the ship's four themed main dining rooms and the Mast Grill, which serves juicy burgers and hearty salads. The Oceanview Cafe serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch offerings, while dinner features a rotating menu with international flair.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady to Key West and Bimini

cruises from florida for 3 days

Step aboard the adults-only Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady for a Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise to Key West, Florida and Bimini, Bahamas, from Miami. The four-night sailings are great for cruisers who want to try out Virgin Voyages or those who want a long weekend away.

You can book an excursion in Key West, but it's easy to explore on your own. Take a ride on the hop-on, hop-off bus or saunter down Duval Street and around Old Town. For local fare, swing by D.J.'s Clam Shack for fresh seafood or Garbo's Grill for Korean barbecue beef tacos. Both were showcased on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Treat yourself to key lime pie on a stick before you head back to the ship.

In Bimini, head straight to Virgin's exclusive beach resort, the Beach Club at Bimini . Here, you can enjoy floating in the pool, Caribbean-themed lunch and games on the beach.

Scarlet Lady is a playground for grownups. The Redemption Spa is a relaxing retreat where you can book a block of time to enjoy the thermal suite or try out a couples massage. For a permanent reminder of your cruise, get a tattoo at Squid Ink . The ship is known for its creative theatrical performances and rollicking nightlife. Head to The Manor for comedy and drag shows, plus late-night revelry. Don't miss Virgin's hyped-up Scarlet Night, which culminates in an epic pool party.

All of the table-service restaurants on Scarlet Lady are included in your cruise fare. You won't find a traditional main dining room. To secure your preferred mealtimes, book dinner reservations through the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you can. Restaurants that are not to be missed include Extra Virgin for Italian fare; The Wake, the fine-dining steakhouse; and Gunbae, the Korean barbecue restaurant where you start your meal with a drinking game.

Science | spacex crew-7 astronauts splash down near pensacola after nearly 200 days in space.

cruises from florida for 3 days

After a slightly extended stay on board the International Space Station, four astronauts from different international space agencies splashed down safely off the Florida coast on board the SpaceX Crew Dragon Endurance early Tuesday.

Crew-7 was made up of NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Satoshi Furukawa and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov.

“SpaceX, thanks for the ride up, but more importantly, the safe ride down,” Moghbeli said after landing at 5:47 a.m. EDT near Pensacola.

Splashdown of Dragon confirmed – welcome back to Earth, @AstroJaws , @Astro_Andreas , @Astro_Satoshi , and Kostya! pic.twitter.com/iugZ6Awwvn — SpaceX (@SpaceX) March 12, 2024

The quartet that launched from Kennedy Space Center on Aug. 26, 2023, arrived at the ISS one day later to begin their 197-day stay on board. It was the second longest stay among the now eight completed SpaceX Crew Dragon trips to the ISS under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. Only Crew-2 in 2021 bested their stay, by just a day.

Including the trips to and from the station, Crew-7 spent just shy of 199 days in space.

They departed the station at 11:20 a.m. EDT Monday to begin more than an 18-hour ride home.

With just over an hour before splashdown, Crew Dragon autonomously jettisoned its trunk to let its heat shield free and performed a 14-minute deorbit burn and nose cone closure so it could begin its descent into the Earth’s atmosphere. Reentry slowed Dragon from more than 17,000 mph during which it reached temperatures of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit and producing 3 to 5 G’s of force.

Plasma buildup on reentry led to about an 11-minute blackout period during which mission control could not communicate with the crew.

“We’ll see you on the other side,” Moghbeli said, after which when prompted by a communications check, she said, ” SpaceX, Dragon. We hear you loud and clear.”

A view of SpaceX Crew Dragon Endurance with Pensacola in the background during landing with its two drogue parachutes deployed on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. (NASA)

The landing sequence had a pair of drogue parachutes deploy four minutes out slowing it further from 350 mph at about 18,000 feet altitude before the final four parachutes deployed with Dragon traveling 119 mph at about 6,500 feet, to then slow it to 16 mph before splashdown.

SpaceX shifts among seven sites in either the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico for landing locations. Waves off Pensacola were less than 1 foot high and wind speeds were less than 5 mph.

Awaiting Dragon’s arrival at the site was recovery vessel Megan, onto which Dragon was lifted followed by the astronauts’ exit from the vehicle less than an hour after splashdown. After medical checks, they got a helicopter ride back to land before boarding a plane to Houston.

Its path brought it across the central United States, a rarity for a Dragon return that often comes instead from the south across the Gulf of Mexico.

“The weather was spectacular today,” said Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program during a post-landing press conference. “Not only at the landing site but across the U.S. and a lot of us got to see Dragon Endurance fly over this country.”

Upon departing the ISS on Monday morning, Moghbeli thanked the remaining members of Expedition 70 who will transition to Expedition 71 left on board the station. That transition will happen when fellow NASA astronaut Loral O’Hara returns to Earth in early April in a Soyuz spacecraft.

“For those staying on board on Expedition 71 we hope that that’s filled with laughter and fulfilling science as ours was,” Moghbeli said. “And Laurel, we’ll see you in a couple of weeks, and we left you some peanut butter and tortillas in Node 1.”

It’s the second time a departing SpaceX Crew Dragon crew has left behind some peanut butter for O’Hara, who was also the recipient of the treat when the private Axiom Space Ax-3 crew left in February.

“Congrats on the departure. I miss you guys already and thanks for that very generous gift,” O’Hara said. “Have a beautiful flight. Enjoy the last few hours in orbit and soft landings. Can’t wait to see you guys in a couple of weeks.”

The program aims for about 180-day visits by rotational crews, but most have actually been shorter. Crew-7’s original target return date was late February, but their relief didn’t arrive until last week because of both weather delays and the availability of Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39-A.

A domino effect that goes back to late 2023 meant Crew-8’s launch had to wait on both a delayed Falcon Heavy mission for the Space Force and then the Intuitive Machines commercial mission of its lunar lander before 39-A was available.

“I think we’re living in a really, really cool part of human spaceflight. We’re expanding so fast,” said Crew-8 commander Matthew Dominick during a preflight press conference back in January. “You imagine if I had walked up to you five years ago and said our constraints to launch is launch pad availability? Right? You would have thought it was crazy, but we’re at a cool spot in spaceflight right now. We’ve got rockets competing for launch pads. And so you’re not waiting on payloads. You’re not waiting on rockets. You’re waiting on launch pads now.”

Plus Crew-7 got an extra day with the leap year.

Endurance completed its third mission having also flown on Crew-3 and Crew-5.

“(Endurance) has now completed three long-duration missions, and that means it’s been in space longer than any crew-rated vehicle in history, at 534 days, which is actually longer than the longest space shuttle (total), which is Space Shuttle Discovery at 365 days,” said Benji Reed, SpaceX’s senior director for human spaceflight programs.

It left behind still attached to the ISS the fleet leader Crew Dragon Endeavour, which arrived with Crew-8 on March 5 as it continues its fifth mission to space. It’s the spacecraft that flew on Demo-2 in 2020 marking the return of NASA human spaceflight from the U.S. for the first time since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011.

Reed noted Endeavour currently has 476 days and counting.

“We’re looking forward to having that capsule overtake that record,” he said.

SpaceX and Boeing won the commercial crew contracts back in 2014, but both faced hurdles getting test spacecraft operational. SpaceX however surged ahead and has been the sole U.S.-based provider with Crew-1 beginning its rotational crew duties in November 2020.

Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner has flown twice without crew, but the first flight had several issues that stopped it from making a rendezvous with the ISS, and while the second flight in May 2021 succeeded in that endeavor, more hardware issues had to be worked through before NASA and Boeing were happy to put humans on board.

That final step dubbed Crew Flight Test (CFT) is now slated for early May, the latest delay that was announced last week from what had been planned for April 22. The delay was due to parking space availability at the station, NASA said.

“We have 17 ISS missions this year,” said NASA’s Joel Montalbano, the outgoing program manager for the International Space Station in a February press conference. “Sort of like the coolest game of Tetris to try and manage all this.”

Its success could finally pave the way for Boeing to join SpaceX in rotational duties to the station as early as February 2025.

The ISS has been continuously populated for more than 23 years since November 2000. NASA has plans to keep it running through at least 2030, after which it will be deorbited. Future low-Earth orbit space efforts will have to rely on commercial space stations, several of which are in the works, but none expected to have any hardware in space before at least 2026.

Florida tourist found dead on Caribbean-bound cruise ship, American arrested after cocaine found in cabin

A 27-year-old Florida woman died on a cruise while traveling to the Bahamas earlier this week while officials discovered cocaine in her cabin.

The passenger was found unresponsive around 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

“A team of medical personnel from the ship assisted and performed CPR, but no vital signs of life were detected and she was declared deceased,” the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a statement.

No official cause of death has been revealed for the woman.

“An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing into this incident.”

A 32-year-old American male, also from Florida, was arrested by the RBPF after their investigation led to the discovery and confiscation of a “quantity of suspected cocaine from the cabin.”

The identities of both Florida residents have not been released.

Monday’s death comes a month after two Kentucky moms were drugged and raped while at a resort enjoying the day at the port from their Carnival Cruise on the Grand Bahama Island.

Friends Amber Shearer and Dongayla Dobson were on their kids-free vacation at the Pirates Cove Resort when a male staffer allegedly offered them a two-for-one tropical drink deal.

The drinks, however, were reportedly stronger than expected, and both women became highly intoxicated 15 minutes after their first sips, Dobson  told NewsNation’s “Cuomo.”

A second resort employee had allegedly lured the women to a secluded area and led them to where they were eventually assaulted while in their impaired state.

Ladonna Batty, a family nurse from Arkansas, was a passenger on the same Carnival cruise the women were on when the ship docked at the Grand Bahama island.

“Out of my 20-odd years of practicing, it was the worst scene that I had ever had to work. It was a horrible situation for both girls,”  Batty told LEX 18.  “Worst thing I’ve ever seen. They were in horrible shambles.”

Thousands of people, both Irish and non-Irish alike, will celebrate Irish heritage by attending one of the many parades around the U.S. this weekend in honor of St. Patrick's Day .

USA TODAY is providing live coverage Saturday morning of celebrations in multiple cities for St. Patrick's Day, including in New York City, Chicago and Savannah, Georgia. You can watch parade coverage at the embedded video at the top of the page or on USA TODAY's YouTube channel .

For many Americans, St. Patrick's Day is more than just a day of religious observance for the patron saint of Ireland , although that's the reason why celebrations began. In the U.S., the holiday (which is not recognized federally) is also a chance for everyone to celebrate Irish culture and heritage.

Even if you can't make it in person, there's still an option to watch some of the most popular parades happening around the country. Here's how to watch.

When is St. Patrick's Day?

St. Patrick's Day is held on March 17 every year in remembrance of St. Patrick, who died March 17, 461.

Although he was born in Britain, he is believed to be responsible for bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Cruise Ship Rescues 14 People Stranded at Sea for 8 Days as Passengers Look on in 'Shock': WATCH

'We could see in the waves a tiny boat," passenger Alessandra Amodio tells PEOPLE of the incident that happened aboard the Icon of the Seas on Sunday

cruises from florida for 3 days

A cruise ship’s voyage to Mexico and the Bahamas turned into a rescue mission when the boat spotted a small vessel in the waves.

On Sunday, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas , the new world's largest cruise ship that launched in January, rescued 14 people who had been stranded at sea for over a week.

Icon passenger Alessandra Amodio told PEOPLE that the cruise ship was in the midst of an eight-day Caribbean itinerary when they spotted the individuals.

"I was in the lunch buffet with my family when we heard a coded announcement over the loud speakers," Amodio told PEOPLE, adding that the announcement came at around 3 p.m. local time. "A few minutes later people started gathering at the windows and then the captain came on and announced that they had found a distressed vessel and we would be turning around to investigate. We all rushed to the windows and in the nearish distance we could see in the waves a tiny boat waving either a large white flag or sheet."

Shortly after, the ship turned around and pulled up next to the boat and "deployed a small zodiac-type rescue boat," she recalls.

@alessandra_rosee/ LOCAL NEWS X/ TMX

"Eventually we saw Royal Caribbean crew helping about two people from the distressed boat onto the rescue boat before returning to the vessel. They then made a few more trips to safely bring everyone on board."

According to Amodio, they later found out that the passengers on the small boat had been "lost at sea for eight days."

Royal Caribibean

"We got a final announcement once they were all on board safely telling us there was 14 people on board," she said, adding that passengers clapped and cheered upon hearing everyone had been rescued safely.

"Our first reaction was shock, I’ve been on six or so cruises and I’ve never experienced anything even close to this," Amodio continued. "During the rescue everyone was more shocked and the general consensus was that this wasn’t something anyone ever thought would be happening. It was crazy to see, even knowing where they were in the water, once they dropped the flag, they were hard to spot. Just seeing this small boat you knew was filled with people surrounded by the vastness of the water was enough to freak you out. "

Royal Caribbean

The ship was on its first full day of sailing and it was between Cozumel, Mexico and western Cuba when the incident happened.

"We weren’t told by the captain or crew what happened to them," Amodio added of the rescued individuals.

The cruise liner, which departed from Miami, Florida, was headed to Roatán, Honduras, and Royal Caribbean's private Bahamian island, CocoCay, during its voyage.

Royal Caribbean told PEOPLE in a statement, "On March 3, 2024, Icon of the Seas encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance. The ship's crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people onboard. The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard."

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson told Newsweek that the rescue occurred in Mexico's search-and-rescue area of responsibility.

The Icon of the Seas made its maiden voyage out of South Florida in late January. The ship departed from Port Miami and docked at ports including Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico, Basseterre in St. Kitts & Nevis and Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas.

Along with the world’s largest pool and water park at sea, Icon also boasts eight "neighborhoods" to explore and an open-air "Central Park."

The record-breaking vessel overtook Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas , which formerly held the title of largest cruise ship in the world.
