The village has a pleasant cool climate during the summer months but with enough cold in winter compared to the other villages of Samos. The climate of the village is ideal for viticulture, that’s why has large areas of vineyards and produce one of the best wines at the island .

Platanos is also famous for its refreshing water , as evidenced by the public fountain of the 17th century in the village square and the proverbial song “ To Plataniotiko nero ” (=water from Platanos) (wonderful reggae version ).

Although the surrounding area of “Platanos” suffered numerous fires, the village is still surrounded by rich forests with pines and vineyards.

History & name

According to Em. Kritikidis in his book Topography of Samos (1869), the village took its name from the first settlers who came in 1555, from the Platanos village at Cynuria of Peloponnese , or from Almyros in Thessaly , while excluding that the village took its name from many plane trees that exist in the area.

Ep. Stamatiadis in “Samiaka” (1886), states that according to tradition, the first settlers came from Evia, at least in 1641, while it took its name from the plane trees forest that existed earlier at the area. Note that there are still many plane trees around the village.

Settlements

Platanos village today, does not have any settlement in its wider area, but Ep. Stamatiadis, and Em. Kritikidis records three settlements at the end of 19th c., Kavaseika or Agios Theodoros with 30 houses, Vareaneika that had been abandoned, after the migration of the inhabitants to Asia Minor and Kaminia (=furnaces) with ten houses, together with the lime furnaces, from which it took its name. The inhabitants of Kaminia, later abandoned it and moved to to Asia Minor and to Samos villages Neochori and Skoureika .

bull, swam ashore with Europa on his back before dragging her off to Gortys. Both the Minoans and

the Romans used the place as their harbor. Nevertheless, for most people, Matala means only one

thing: hippies. Back in the late 1960s - 1970s, this little town was a colony of the “flower children”,

who lived in the caves that used to be former Roman tombs. Here we will enjoy the crystal waters,

Once occupied by pirates, today it is a very popular destination for day-trippers who flood there to faraway lagoon, whilst having a Mediterranean holiday. Elafonisi is a paradise on earth – a heaven of unparalleled beauty. It is covered with sand dunes, low trees, bushes, sand lilies and junipers. The most famous landmark of Crete, Knossos, is the absolute “must” for everybody who decides to spend his or

her vacation on our beautiful island. On one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Greece, we find the center of

one of the most powerful civilizations of the ancient world and through the excavations, the legends and the history of

the place we learn about its settlers: the Minoan people, the rulers of the Mediterranean.

With its small palace, the room of murals, the royal tombs and the royal mansion, Knossos is probably the most

significant token of a civilization that left such marks in history that can never be erased. The intricate structure of the

palace corridors gave it the name Labyrinth, where, according to the myth, the legendary Minotaur used to live. The

marvelous architectural plan, the use of rare and luxurious materials, the advanced techniques of construction and

drainage system and the massive size of the palace of Knossos make it, even today, the most amazing sight on Crete.

We return to the city to visit the newly renovated Archaeological Museum, which exhibits traditional architecture

and preserves exquisite and valuable ethnographic and historical material from the ancient period of Cretan history.

A stroll in the city of Heraklion will end up a perfect day –shopping in its modern stores, enjoying our coffee or

lunch in one of its many restaurants or just exploring its superb medieval buildings.

This excursion takes us to a small picturesque fishing village in southwestern Crete, which has not yet been affected by mass tourism. Here you will not find big hotels, roads with traffic and cars. There are two ways to get here, either on foot from short walking trails or by boat. Come and enjoy the crystal clear blue-green water, the sun, the calm and the food in the picturesque taverns that you will find here.

For walks we recommend the beach in Marmara. You can get there either walking 2 hours or by taxi boat. It’s a unique walking experience overlooking the Libyan sea in a continuous coastal path that ends at the exit of the gorge of Aradena. The beach has fine dark pebbles and is surrounded by imposing white rocks.

Although relatively inaccessible, Marmara gather quite a crowd. The beach is organized and right next door you will find a small tavern with traditional food. You will have to return by taxi boat which you can order any time in the tavern, so that you can catch your return boat.

Our Village, Platanos Kissamou

Meet our village, meet locals and feel the real hospitality

Platanos is a picturesque village, one of the largest in the prefecture of Chania.  It belongs to the municipality of Kissamos and is a part of the regional units of Chania in the Region of Crete.  Platanos is just 40 minutes from Chania by car and is built at an altitude of 240 metres.  It is an ideal destination for those who wish to combine mountian and sea holidays.  The famous Falassarna beach is only 5 kilometres  away.  The village has acquired its name from a regal platanos tree (plane tree) which can be found in the center of the village square.  It has been standing there for centuries…Long before Turkish occupation of Crete.

There is a famous “mantinada” (cretan saying).

“My mediterranean platanos tree…proudly you stand.”

The population of Platanos numbers around 1000 residents.  They are closely attached to their village and land, one could even say there is an indescribable love for their birthplace.  Their main occupation is agriculture.  The majority of the population are farmers, but there are many who are  simultaneously engaged in farming.  For those who wanted to progress into other endeavors, were helped by the superb beauty of Falassarna.  In recent years the number of those involved with tourism has increased greatly and they all provide a friendly service to the thousands of visitors to Falassarna each summer.

Platanos can be considered  a “blessed” village because there is a Primary School, a Pre-school and a Kindergarten.  Α  fact which is very important for a village.  Children’s games, laughter and their voices fill the neighbourboods of this beautiful village.  The development of the village is evident as there is a wide range of stores and services.  For example there is a bank, pharmacy, an agricultural doctor’s surgery, accounting firms, an insurance agency, oil mills, a rural cooperative for agricultural products, a butcher, bakeries, petrol stations and of course super markets for the daily needs of each household. And for anyone who wants a little rest and relaxation, there are small traditional taverns and cafes for anyone who wants to enjoy a nice meal, coffee and raki.

🇬🇧 Platanos in the prefecture Kynourias, is located at about the center of Peloponnese. The picturesque village is snuggled in a ravine between two slopes of Parnonas, and has been declared a traditional settlement. Its location, the surrounding virgin beautiful nature with old trees, waterfalls and the abundance of water, gives this small village a unique distinction as a must see destination. The village starts from close to the bottom of the gorge and spreads upwards the side of the western mountain slope. The main road passes by over the top of the village and another small local road ends in the bottom of the village running across close to the gorge. One has to climb steps to go about in the village up and down! There are many abandoned homes, as villagers have left and migrated mainly to America. However, many of the original villagers have come back and rebuilt nice houses as seen in the pictures. A natural water spring spurs out of the ground and the water runs all the way down providing for the village water needs. One of the best drinking waters, better than Fiji water I would say.

Plátanos en Mole Recipe

This post is also available in: Español

Platanos en mole is one of my favorite Guatemalan desserts. This delicious recipe for sweet plantains in a velvety sweet mole sauce is a traditional Guatemalan dish you will surely fall in love with.

Plátanos en mole recipe from Guatemala

A Taste of Home: Sharing My Childhood Favorite, Platános En Mole

Growing up in Guatemala City , I have a lot of fond memories of helping my nana in the kitchen and cooking up all sorts of delicious dishes. One of my all-time favorite Guatemalan foods was the platanos en mole. I remember the sweet, rich aroma of the chocolate mole sauce filling our home as we cooked. And the excited looks on my brothers’ faces when they found out we were making it for dinner.

Fast-forward a few years, and now I have my own family, and I love nothing more than making this classic dish for my kids. It brings back so many happy memories, and I love seeing the same excitement on their faces as they dig into a plate of sweet, tender plantains smothered in rich, chocolatey sauce.

And still, when I travel to Guatemala, I look for restaurants in Guatemala City or Antigua Guatemala that have platanos en mole on their menu. But unfortunately, I have found that every recipe is slightly different. But this recipe I am sharing, the one we made at home, is still the best, in my opinion!

What Are Platanos En Mole?

So what exactly is platanos en mole? Simply put, it’s plantains cooked in a sweet mole sauce. Now, I know the word “mole” might sound intimidating to some people, but trust me, it’s worth getting over any hesitation you might have. This sauce is made with a blend of spices, chocolate, and various other ingredients, resulting in a thick, flavorful sauce that perfectly complements the plantains’ slightly sweet, slightly starchy flavor.

When it comes to taste, I can tell you that it’s a true feast for the senses. The plantains are soft and tender, with just the right amount of sweetness, while the mole sauce is rich, creamy, and just a little bit spicy. Together, they create a harmonious blend of flavors that will leave you coming back for seconds (and maybe even thirds!).

History Of The Guatemalan Platános En Mole

“ Moles ,” sauces made from chili peppers and spices, have been a part of the culinary tradition in Mesoamerican regions since pre-Hispanic times. However, Guatemala is unique in preparing Sweet Mole (Mole en Dulce) for savory dishes and desserts. Guatemalan Mole typically includes Chile Pasa, tomato, sesame, and cinnamon. Still, sweet bread, brown sugar or panela, and handmade chocolate in tablets are added to thicken the sauce for the Sweet Mole.

This delicious Guatemalan dessert originated in the San Marcos department in the early 16th century when the Mayan brotherhoods settled in the area before the Spanish conquest. The key ingredient in the mole recipe is Mayan chocolate, which has remained unchanged for centuries.

Over time, the formula has incorporated additional elements brought to Guatemala by the Spanish, such as sesame and cinnamon. Still, it has remained the same and has become a staple in Guatemalan cuisine.

In 2007 this delicious dessert was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. If you are traveling to Guatemala , you will find platanos en mole in restaurant menus from Antigua Guatemala , and Guatemala City to Atitlan and Tikal.

What Are The Ingredients For Platanos En Mole?

Platanos en mole is made with a delicious and complex sweet sauce. It’s thick and velvety, made from a blend of ingredients that give it a unique and unforgettable flavor. Mole has a rich history in Mexican cuisine; however, this Guatemalan sweet mole has no savory or spicy ingredients. Instead, this mole sauce is traditionally made from sweet chiles (like pasilla chile), pepitoria (pumpkin seeds), and chocolate, which gives it a sweet and spicy taste.

And finally, the addition of chocolate is what gives the sauce its signature sweetness. The chocolate is typically Guatemalan or Mexican , made with sugar, cinnamon, and ground cocoa nibs.

How Do You Make Platános En Mole?

Whether you’re a fan of unique culinary experiences, you’re sure to fall in love with the unique taste of Guatemalan platános en mole. I absolutely love Guatemalan cuisine , and this recipe for mole plantains is one of my favorite dishes. This traditional Guatemalan dish combines the sweetness of ripe plantains with the rich, savory flavors of mole sauce, resulting in a truly unique and delicious taste.

First, fry the plantains in hot oil until golden brown and crispy. If you want to get your fried plantains just right, soft and slightly caramelized, check out my article on how to make the best platanitos fritos . Then, while frying, make the mole sauce by combining ingredients such as chocolate, tomatoes, and a unique blend of spices. Then let the sauce simmer on low heat until it thickens and the flavors meld together. Finally, pour the mole sauce over the fried plantains, let sit a little longer and serve. One bite of this dish, and you’ll be transported to Guatemala’s vibrant and flavorful streets!

Ingredients.

  • 4 ripe plantains
  • 1 dried chile Pasa ( pasilla chile )
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 ounces of Pepitoria or pumpkin seeds
  • 2 ounces of sesame seeds
  • 1 pound of Roma tomatoes
  • 1 large Guatemalan Champurrada
  • 1 pound of Mexican chocolate
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 3 cups of water
  • 4 tablespoons of oil

How To Make Plantains In Mole Sauce

  • Brown the dried chile, cinnamon stick, Pepitoria, sesame seeds, and tomatoes on a grill or pan. Set aside one tablespoon of the roasted sesame seeds to use later as a topping.
  • While the ingredients are roasting, heat the oil and fry the plantains that have been sliced or cut into rounds. Drain and let them rest.
  • Once the chile and tomatoes are browned, blend the sesame seeds and Pepitoria and set aside in a separate container.
  • Add the tomato, dried chili, cloves, cinnamon, and water, and blend until you get a smooth sauce.
  • Add the sesame seeds and Pepitoria to the blender and mix with the tomato, chili, cloves, and cinnamon. You can also add the ground Champurrada and blend everything.
  • Boil 3 cups of water and add the chocolate pieces until melted.
  • Once the chocolate is melted, and the water is boiling, pour the tomato mixture from the blender and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Add sugar to taste and stir constantly.
  • Once the sauce is boiling, add the fried plantains and let them cook for five more minutes with the boiling sauce.
  • Allow the plantains to cool, and serve with a sprinkle of the previously roasted sesame seeds.

Tips For Making Plantains In Mole Sauce

  • Guatemalan Champurradas thicken the mole sauce and make it more delicious. If you don’t have champurradas, you can also use toasted sweet bread, like Sweet Hawaiian.
  • If you can’t find Pepitoria, you can use sunflower seeds, which will give a slightly different flavor but still give the texture of a mole. You can also use the orange pumpkin seed instead of Pepitoria.
  • Make sure the plantains are very ripe; they must be dark and soft outside. If you are unsure, you can try them. If they are sweet, they are good for making mole de plátano.
  • If you want a spicy mole, leave some seeds from the dried chili pepper in the sauce.

Make Ahead

Prepping a couple of things ahead of time for your Guatemalan Platanos en Mole recipe is a great way to save time and ensure a delicious meal. You can easily make the mole sauce a day or two in advance and store it in the refrigerator.

How To Freeze Platanos en Mole

The fried plantains are best if you make them right before eating. However you can make the mole sauce ahead of time and freeze.  Simply store the sauce in an airtight container and freeze it for up to a month. Don’t forget to label it with the dish’s name and the date so you know how long it has been sitting in your freezer.

When you’re ready to enjoy it, thaw the mole sauce in the refrigerator overnight and reheat it on the stove or in the microwave. It will maintain its delicious flavors and textures, making it the perfect option for a quick and easy meal anytime.

Buñuelos are bits of fried wheat-based dough, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Throughout Latin America, there are different versions of buñuelos; they can be round, flat, or even twisted strips of dough. In Guatemala, the buñuelos are covered in powdered sugar and served in light syrup with a hint of anise.

Pervolia , Missiria and Platanias (or Platanes) are three consecutive suburbs of Rethymnon , located 3-5km west of the city, respectively. They were separate settlements, which have been incorporated into the urban region of Rethymnon , due to the residential development of the last century.

In front of the suburbs stretches a long sandy beach, which is an extension of long beachfront of Rethymnon Bay that starts near the harbor of Rethymno and extends to the east for 13km till Skaleta . It is very well organized, with a plethora of choices for food, drink and accommodation. Like in all parts of the long beachfront, loggerhead sea turtle lays it eggs here. The turtles are protected by the Greek State and Rethymno Bay is one of the three most important places for the species in Greece, with more than 400 nests every year.

Wooden architecture, Tomsk, Tomsk Federation, Siberia, Russia, Eurasia

Magnificent in snow, but fun to be in at any time of the year, the university city of Tomsk boasts numerous examples of fine wooden buildings and has an animated cafe and art scene. The city has enjoyed the reputation as the ‘cultural capital of Siberia’ since the 1960s, when artists, writers and theatre and film directors were invited to take up residence here.

The city of Tomsk is one of the oldest and most beautiful destinations in Siberia. It was founded in 1604 by the decree of Tsar Boris Godunov after ambassadors of the Eushta Tatars appealed to Russia for protection from their hostile neighbors. The Russians offered to take them under their wing, and since then Tomsk has been a border region of Russia. Notorious for much of the 20th century as a place of exile for political prisoners, it was also a major transit and trade center which even served for a short time as the capital of Siberia.

Today, Tomsk is among the largest cultural and educational center in Russia, a city of innovation so renowned for its universities and scientists that it has been dubbed “Siberian Athens”. Despite its rapid development, the city has managed to preserve its history, most notably through an array of 18th-20th century wooden and stone architecture which is now the pride of the city.

The climate may be frigid, but tours to Tomsk offer visitors a warm and cordial welcome and a variety of attractions which are well worth seeing .

Architectural Monuments of Tomsk

The eclectic blend of architectural complexes in Tomsk, many of which have received international recognition, make it an alluring stop for history buffs. Among this collection are museum exhibits as well as structures which remain in use. Two of the most striking examples of classicism architecture in the city are Tomsk State University, where students still study to this day, and Tomsk Museum of Wooden Architecture, which is under national protection as one of the rarest remaining examples of the Art Nouveau style .

Cultural Attractions of Tomsk

Tomsk brims not only with architectural surprises but with a thriving cultural life.

There are a dozen museums at Tomsk State University alone, including a Herbarium and zoological, paleontological, archaeological and ethnographic exhibits. Off-campus museums include Tomsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, Tomsk Planetarium, Tomsk Regional Art Museum, Museum of Wooden Architecture and Museum of the History of Tomsk. Beer lovers can learn all about local brewing traditions in the Museum of Tomsk Beer, while at Museum of Slavic Mythology visitors can discover regional ancestral beliefs, pagan gods and the heroes of local fairy tales and legends. Drama, music, puppet and opera and ballet theaters all operate in Tomsk, and each offers a repertoire which is sure to satisfy even the pickiest of patrons.

For those seeking solitude and reflection within church walls, we recommend visiting Chapel of the Iver Icon of the Mother of God and two of the oldest churches in southern Siberia: Epiphany Cathedral, built in 1773, and Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God (formerly Mother of God-Aleksevsky Monastery), built in a Siberian Baroque style .

Highlights of Tomsk

In good weather, a walk through the streets of Tomsk is a great way to soak in its beauty. You can start exploring from Camp Garden along the Tom River, a park whose unusual name is derived from the summer camps of the Tomsk Infantry Regiment which were staged here in the 18th century. Be sure to stop by its amazing observation deck, located on the south side of the park.

The main street of Tomsk, Lenin Avenue,  leads to Siberian Botanical Garden, in which there is a greenhouse with an unusual glass roof. Walk along Lenin Avenue to the north and you will see Novo-Sobornaya Square, in the very center of which is a monument to St. Tatiana, the patroness of students. In the surrounding neighborhood are many landmark buildings, including Provincial Government Building and the colorful House of the Merchant Gadalov, now preserved as a Monument of Regional Significance.

When in Tomsk, be sure to see the ensemble of buildings on Tatarskaya Street. Take a walk through the wooden quarter on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, where you will find yourself transported to centuries past at the Norwegian-style House with Dragons and House with Firebirds.

To catch a panoramic view of Tomsk, head to Blue Cliff Sanatorium or the former fire tower, which is the highest point in town and can be reached from Tomsk History Museum.

The many unusual monuments of Tomsk never fail to attract visitors, including the Wooden Ruble Monument, Monument to Happiness (dedicated to the wolf from a popular local cartoon) and the truly bizarre Monument to Slippers. Many people empathize with the man depicted in Monument to Her Lover, who is seen in his boxers as he clings for dear life onto a balcony railing .

Tomsk Souvenirs

In Tomsk you can find plenty of standard souvenirs such as plates and handicrafts, as well as gifts which express the unique personality of the city. Consider something that reflects Siberian nature: pine nuts, herbal teas, dried mushrooms and taiga berries are especially popular among tourists, and their pleasant aromas and flavors will remind you of your vacation for weeks and months to come. In autumn, be sure to pay a visit to the fairs, where you will find winter clothes made of genuine leather on sale. Anyone with a taste for beer is also advised to grab a few bottles of the acclaimed Tomsk Beer.

The Hidden Russia

platanos travel

Tomsk has none of the historical pomp and circumstance of Russia's two major tourist destinations, Moscow and St. Petersburg . For the traveler who hankers for something besides glittering churches and postcard-familiar scenery, Tomsk offers something more subdued. Wooden houses, like those out of a favorite Russian fairy tale, line the streets in various stages of repair or renovation. The many universities give the town a learned, serious atmosphere. And the museums are heavy with the gravity of Siberian history. Set in the midst of miles of taiga, Tomsk has a quiet dignity.

Tomsk Attractions and People

The best time to visit Tomsk is in the summer: June, July, or August. The sunny, warm days are perfect for taking walks in Lagerny Sad, the war memorial park that looks over the River Tom. The residential neighborhoods are full of points of interest, and the downtown area is great for shopping and eating. However, even on rainy days, you can find something to do. Not only is there a recently established art museum, but the Tomsk Regional Museum gives an in-depth look at how the peoples of Siberia once lived.

For those who want something special, it's imperative to check out the KGB Memorial Museum. Located in the original Tomsk KGB headquarters, it is a reminder of the terror of the Communist years and the many labor and concentration camps that were set up in the Tomsk region. The holding cells for prisoners also contain their stories of survival; a rotating exhibit honors the art, literature, and lives of those who were brave enough to fight against and tell about their experiences at the hands of the KGB. The museum is the only one like it in the country, and visitors can see Solzhenitsyn's signature in its guestbook.

The wooden houses are a point of pride for the people of Tomsk. Many of the more elaborate ones have become symbols of the city. The windows are bordered with elaborately carved wooden decorations, some in themes depicting birds or dragons. Some of these buildings are still inhabited, which seems a decent metaphor for the way the past in Siberia maintains a symbiont relationship with the present.

The rare Westerner in Tomsk will be met with wariness and curiosity, though seldom hostility. Anyone who shows interest in Tomsk or the Siberian way of life will make friends quickly. Tomichi, the citizens of Tomsk, love to have guests and to share their warm Russian hospitality with foreigners. Their knowledge of their city and of Siberian history can make a stay in this town especially meaningful. You can meet them at the American Center near Tomsk State University, at the central fountain where many Tomichi congregate during the evening, over drinks at one of the many bars, or even on the bus. Any foreigner tends to stand out, but this can be an advantage when trying to make friends.

Eating in Tomsk

One of the most delightful aspects of a Siberian summer is the food. The markets are full of delicious fruits and berries, all of which are at premium pricing for the traveler who is used to paying an arm and a leg for sub-par produce. There is an extensive variety of cheese and other dairy products, free from the processes that often make US diary bland and lacking consistency. At certain times of the week, you can visit stalls that sell meat freshly butchered or fish freshly caught. Be sure to be aware of any old woman by the side of the road with vegetables for sale  - they're almost always home-grown and delicious.

Tomsk is a part of Russia that is unique for the Eastern European traveler. Its small size and community atmosphere, along with its proximity to vast pine forests, make it an escape from the big city Russia that most tourists are familiar with. Fourteen hours by train will take you to a bigger city, Krasnoyarsk, and then you can ride the Trans-Siberian railroad on to Novosibirsk. However, given Tomsk's character and quality, it is unlikely any visitor will be in a hurry to leave.

Tomsk: Cultural treasure of central Siberia

At the beginning of the 20th century the Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment was demonstrated with special clarity through his images of architectural monuments in the historic sites throughout the Russian heartland.

In June 1912, Prokudin-Gorsky ventured into Western Siberia as part of a commission to document the Kama-Tobolsk Waterway, a link between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. The town of  Tyumen  served as his starting point for productive journeys that included Shadrinsk (current population 68,000), established in 1662 on the Iset River. By the time of Prokudin-Gorsky’s visit, the town already had several enterprises, including a ceramics factory, and a population of some 15,000.

Prokudin-Gorsky’s photographs of Shadrinsk include the rapid construction of pine log buildings for a railroad station complex – part of a secondary rail line built in 1911-1913. The partially completed buildings show an efficient use of standardized design, with measured log stacks in the foreground. Tall, spindly pine trees complete the picture.

In a broader context, these photographs reflect the expansion of Russia’s rail system from Yekaterinburg to the Far East. Although Prokudin-Gorsky did not reach Tomsk (in central Siberia), I visited there in the late Summer of 1999 and saw the extensive use of log structures in an urban environment.

Tomsk beginnings

By the time detachments of Russian Cossacks arrived in 1598, the native inhabitants included the Khants and Siberian Tatars, who, in 1603, accepted the authority of Tsar Boris Godunov.

In 1604, a fort was founded on the banks of the River Tom (a tributary of the Ob) and, throughout the 17th century, the Tomsk settlement served as a bulwark against the Kalmyk and Kirghiz steppe tribes.

With the expansion of Russian control to the south during the 18th century, the military significance of Tomsk was replaced by trade and transportation, centered on caravans of tea from China.

The expansion of the Moscow Road through Siberia in the middle of the 18th century provided further stimulus for growth that was reflected in the construction of large brick churches, such as the Epiphany Cathedral (first completed in 1784) and the Church of the Resurrection (1789), a masterpiece of Siberian baroque architecture.

During the 1830s, the development of gold mines in the territory greatly increased the town's significance as a center of mining operations and administration. Tomsk Region also continued to serve as a place of political exile, as it had in the 17th and 18th centuries.

‘Diverted’ opportunities

During the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway at the end of the 19th century, Tomsk missed a second golden opportunity when the Ministry of Transportation decided to place the railroad crossing over the Ob’ River to the south. There are conflicting explanations for this decision, which slighted Tomsk, but created the town of Novonikolaevsk, subsequently to become the major Siberian metropolis of Novosibirsk.

Tomsk settled for a branch line constructed in 1896 through the small junction of Taiga (80 kilometers south of the city) and that spur enabled Tomsk to remain a center of trade and agricultural development in central Siberia.

The impressive scale of its commercial and residential architecture illustrates the diversity of Siberian culture at the turn of the 20th century. The Vtorov firm built one of Siberia’s largest department stores, which still graces Tomsk’s central district. Tomsk also became one of Siberia's preeminent educational centers, the location of Siberia's first university, founded in 1878. Among Russian institutions of higher learning, Tomsk State University is distinguished not only by its academic luster but also by its attractive, spacious campus.

It should be emphasized that Tomsk accepted religious faiths in addition to Russian Orthodoxy. By 1910, the city had a Catholic Church of the Holy Rosary (now restored for use), two mosques (both of which have been restored), a Lutheran church (rebuilt), an Old Believer Orthodox church and a large synagogue that is among the most beautiful in Russia. The dome over its entrance has now been reconstructed.

Architectural heritage

In 1911, the city’s northern area gained the neo-Byzantine Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, the only church to remain open for most of the Soviet era. Some of the churches were built of wood, such as the Old Believer Church of the Dormition, completed in 1913 and lovingly maintained today by the parish. I was particularly honored to be asked to photograph Metropolitan Alimpy (Gusev; 1929-2003), who was visiting Tomsk at the same time.

The most distinctive part of the city’s architectural heritage is displayed in its neighborhoods of elaborately decorated wooden houses, structures of solid logs often covered with plank siding.

It is no exaggeration to say that the "lacework" of Tomsk's wooden architectural ornament – particularly the window surrounds, or nalichniki – is unrivaled in Russia for its lavish detail and the extent of its preservation. Many of these extraordinary wooden houses were built for merchants who lived in the Tatar Quarter.

The Tatar Quarter also contains the renovated White Mosque and a cultural center, located in a mansion built at the beginning of the 20th century for Karym Khamitov, a Tatar financial magnate.  Other ethnic groups include Russian  Germans, composed of settlers who moved to the area beginning in the 19th century. One of them was Viktor Kress, the governor of Tomsk Region in 1991-2012.

Decline & rebirth

The many positive trends in the region’s development during the early 20th century were crushed by the savage fighting of the Civil War between 1918-1921. After that conflict, Tomsk entered a decline that was reversed by the evacuation to the city of industrial and research facilities during World War II.

This momentum, reinforced by strong institutions of higher education in Tomsk, continued after the war with the development of nuclear research installations for both military and energy purposes.

With over a half a million inhabitants and a regional population of almost a million, Tomsk remains a leading Siberian center for administration, education, industry and energy resources.

At the same time, dedication to the city’s historical environment – including its houses of worship – has succeeded in preserving an architectural legacy that represents a Russian national treasure.

Indeed, a walk through the historic neighborhoods of Tomsk reminds just how much Russian culture belongs to the forest.

In the early 20th century, Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916, he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France, where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century, the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986, architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
