London Underground Tickets & Travelcards

The Travelcard is a transport pass for London that gives you unlimited travel in London within certain zones . The prices vary according to the number of zones you need to travel through. Central London is in zone 1.

Travelcards are valid for 1 day, 7 days, 1 month or 1 year.

The passes are valid for travel on all types of transport in London including:

the Underground (the tube)
the local suburban trains within London
the Elizabeth Line (not west of West Drayton)
the Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
the London Overground
the buses all over London. A Travelcard for any zone allows you to use the buses in all zones (zones 1-6)

The 3 Day Travelcard, weekend Travelcard, Zone 1-2 & 2-6 One Day Travelcards are no longer available.

Single Underground Tickets

Single paper tickets on the London underground are expensive if you buy them from a tube station ticket machine:

One Day Travelcards: 2024 prices

Using a Pay as you go Oyster card or a contactless card are the cheapest ways to pay for travel if you’re in London for 1-5 days. The daily cap is £8.50 per day for zones 1-2

If you really don’t want to use an Oyster card or don’t have a contactless card, the One Day Travelcard is the next best money-saving pass.

The paper Off peak One Day Travelcard for zone 1-6 is £15.90. This is expensive, but still cheaper than paying the full cash fare for 3 underground trips in central London (3 x £6.70 = £20.10 ).

Peak v anytime travelcards.

One Day Travelcard prices are different if you travel during peak or off-peak times:

Anytime Travelcard Valid for travel at anytime. Off-Peak Travelcard For travel after 9.30am Monday–Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Top Tip: An Off-Peak One Day Travelcard for zones 1–6 costs £10.40 with a Railcard .

Weekly Travelcards: 2024 prices

If you stay in London for 6–7 days and use the underground, trains, and buses every day, the weekly Travelcard is the most cost-effective travel pass.

The one-week pass including central London (zones 1-2) is £42.70.

It can start on any day of the week
It’s valid for travel at anytime; there is no peak or off-peak rate.

Most places sell weekly Travelcards loaded onto a plastic Oyster card. There’s a £7 fee for the Oyster card.

Your fare on an Oyster card will automatically cap at the weekly Travelcard fare (this is already available on contactless cards). The cap starts on Monday and ends Sunday, so it mainly benefits Londoners or those working in London.

Monthly Travelcards: 2024 prices

For longer stays in London, monthly Travelcards are available. You won’t save much compared to buying 4 x weekly Travelcards – but you’ll save time renewing it. Where to buy travelcards.

One day, weekly and monthly Travelcards are available from:

Underground stations

Travelcards are available from all underground station ticket machines (there are no longer any underground tickets offices). The busier stations in central London have staff to help you use the machines.

Local shops and newsagents

Travelcards are also available from Oyster ticket stops . These are newsagents and local shops licensed to sell London transport tickets and Oyster cards. One Day Travelcards are not available from Oyster ticket stops.

London train stations

One Day Travelcards are available from all London train station ticket offices and ticket macines. Paper weekly and monthly Travelcards are no longer available from train stations . They are available to buy, but they are loaded onto an Oyster card and may only be available from ticket machines, not ticket offices.

TfL Visitor Centres at Victoria train station, Kings Cross/St Pancras International station, Heathrow Terminal 2 & 3 tube staion, Liverpool St station & Piccadilly Circus tube station.

How to use a Travelcard

On the underground.

If you have a paper One Day Travelcard or single ticket from a ticket machine, insert the card into the slot on the front of the ticket barrier. The barrier opens when you take the ticket from behind the yellow reader, on the top.

If you have a paper One Day Travelcard, just show it to the driver when boarding the bus.

If you only need to use public transport for a day or two of your trip, TFL's (Transport for London) day pass with a price cap is all you need to know about. It's priced as a London day travel - one day travel pass. London Travelcard

The London Travelcard is a transport pass which entitles you to unlimited travel on London’s public transport. You can use a travelcard to travel on the London Underground, overground, public buses, DLR (docklands light rail), TFL rail and other trains, as long as you travel within London’s travel zones.

It is designed for people who are planning on using London’s public transport a lot when visiting London or for people who commute into London on a daily basis. Still, a London Travelcard may sometimes not be the cheapest option even if does entitle you to unlimited travel.

London Travelcard: What do I need to know before I buy one?

When buying a London Travelcard there are three things that you need to know:

1. The duration of the card:

You can buy a travelcard for one day, 7 days, one month or annual.

2. The travel zones of London that will be using:

When you buy a travelcard you need to choose what travel zones you want use. If you are going to travel between zones 1 and 2, you will need a travelcard that is valid for these two zones, but if you are going to travel between zones 1 and 5 every day, you will need a travelcard that covers zones 1 to 5. This does not apply to travelling by bus, as any travelcard will allow you to travel on buses to and from any zone within London’s travel zones. So for example, if you have a travelcar for zones 1 and 2, you can still use a bus to get to zone 3 or zone 5 with that travelcard at no extra cost.

Most of London’s tourist attractions are located in zone 1, and only a few of the most popular attractions can be found outside zone 1, such as Camden Town Market which is in zone 2. Make sure you know what zone your hotel is in before you buy a travelcard.

3. Off-peak or Anytime

If you are buying a 1 day travelcard (which we don’t normally recommend as an oyster card has a daily cap that is cheaper than a one day travelcard – see below) you will have to choose if you want it to travel anytime of the day, or just during off-peak times (Monday – Friday from 9.30 am; all day Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays).

This does not affect 1 day travelcards for zones 1 to 4, so if you are visiting London you probably don’t need to worry about this at all as you are unlikely to be travelling to zone 5, 6 or beyond.

Which Travelcard to buy if you are planning a trip to London

1 day travelcard.

The price of the 1 day London travelcard for zones 1, 1-2, 1-3 and 1-4 costs £15.20. We don’t normally recommend using the 1 day travelcard, as it is actually cheaper to use an oyster card, a visitor oyster card, or a contactless card as these payment methods have a daily cap. The daily cap applied to these zones are: £8.10 for travel within zones 1-2; £9.60 for zones 1-3 and £11.70 for zones 1-4. Once you have reached this daily cap you will be able to travel within the same travel zones for free. It is still necessary to tap in and tap out on the yellow reader with your oyster card, visitor oyster card or contactless card when using public transport.

7 day Travelcard

The 7 day travelcard for London travel zones 1-2 costs £40.70. When comparing oyster card/visitor oyster card/contactless fares to a 7 day travelcard, I would probably say that it is convenient to get a 7 day travelcard if you are going to be travelling around London for more than 6 days. If you are going to be in London less than 6 days then I would recommend using an oyster card (vistor oyster card or contactless if you are a UK resident).

Where to buy a London travelcard

Buying a London Travelcard at an underground station

It is possible to buy a London travelcard at any underground station in London, by either using a ticket machine at the ticket office or a manned desk in a the ticket office (if available). When you buy a 7 day, monthly or annual London travelcard at an underground station you will normally get an oyster card with the travelcard incorporated in it. So your oyster card will be pre-loaded with the travelcard you have chosen. This way you can also use this oyster card with pay as you go for any trips that are not included in the travelcard.

So, as an example, if you have a 7 day travelcard for zones 1 – 4 in your oyster card, you will be entitles to unlimited journeys within these travel zones for 7 days, and you can use your oyster as you normally would, by touching in and touching out. But, if one day you need to go to zone 6, you will be able to use the same oyster with pay as you go balance. One example when this might happen, is if you arrive at Heathrow airport (zone 6) but you want to buy a 7 day travelcard for zones 1 – 4. It will be much cheaper to use they oyster card with pay as you go for the journey from Heathrow to central London and the journey from central London to Heathrow Airport on your last day and adding a 7 travelcard for zones 1 – 4, than using a 7 day travelcard for zones 1 – 6.

Buying a London Travelcard at a train station

It is possible to buy a London travelcard at any train station located inside London’s Travel Zones . When you buy a travelcard at a train station, you will normally get a paper travelcard and not an oyster card.

Stansted, Luton or Gatwick airports are all outside London’s Travel Zones so these stations won’t normally sell London travelcards.

Buy a London Travelcard online

One of the easiest ways to buy a London travelcard is by buying it online. The price is exactly the same as what it would cost you to buy it in London but you will pay a little extra for delivery.

Budapest is the kind of city where one visit is never enough.

After my first trip to Budapest in 2015, I knew I had to go back. And finally, that dream was fulfilled.

There’s a lot to see and do in Hungary’s capital. And it can seem daunting trying to plan a short trip to Budapest. I’ve taken all guesswork out for you. Use my hours of planning and research, plus first-hand experience on the ground, to make your next trip easy and breezy.

I used the Budapest Card to streamline my trip and squeeze the most out of every minute. But in the wrong hands, the card can be a waste of money. Like most tools, it’s all about how you use it.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Budapest Card, including my grab-and-go 3-day itinerary.

I found the list of attractions and restaurants that support the Budapest Card a bit overwhelming at first. But don’t fret… they offer a searchable directory that can be filtered by keyword, topic and discount level. This was my starting point for building out an itinerary for Budapest.

I also suggest downloading (and/or printing) the official companion guide for a handy 1-page overview. This makes it easy to build out your itinerary, and tick off these items, so you don’t miss anything important.

Tip: Unlike other tourist discount cards that are timed by the day, the Budapest Card is timed by the hour from first use. If you start a 24-hour card at 4pm on Friday, it will expire at 4pm on Saturday. This gives you better value and flexibility than day-based alternatives.

Is Budapest Card Worth it?

Note: The Budapest Card price increased recently in May 2023, and it was better value before . Now you have to use it more strategically to get the most value out of it.

The answer to this question depends on how long your card is valid and how often you use it. If you just use it for 1 or 2 attractions, you won’t get the most bang for your buck. But if you’re willing to cram a bunch of fun activities and museums back-to-back for a few days, then you’ll be sure to get your money’s worth.

The secret to getting the most out of your Budapest Card is to plan your itinerary well before your visit, so you know what you want to see and can check the opening hours and transport options, saving time and stress. I don’t recommend flying by the seat of your pants.

I’ve created a handy 3-day itinerary below based on my experiences in Budapest.

The downside: Some of the most popular attractions (like the Hungarian Parliament Building, Matthew’s Church and the House of Terror) are not included in the card. It seems they try to push tourists towards lesser popular attractions, maybe in an attempt to reduce overtourism.

Which Budapest Card Should I Get?

That depends on how long your visit is. You can’t really do Budapest justice in 1 or 2 days, so I recommend at least the 72-hour card (or longer). I went with the 96-hour card.

If you’re staying longer than 3 days, then I suggest cramming all your card-related sightseeing in a compact 3-day window, and then keep your other days open for sights that aren’t supported by the card at a slower pace (such as the Hungarian Parliament).

Where to get the Budapest Card?

You can buy your Budapest Cards at the BudapestInfo Centers (listed below), as well as several BKK customer service centres (public transport authority).

Budapest Card tips

Plan your trip in advance so you know how much time you’ll have at each location, transport options, and the best times to visit.
Try to book get a card with a longer duration, so you have more time to explore the city and its attractions.
If you need airport transfers, book the 72h Plus Card. You’ll save a bit.
Sign your card on the back once you receive it, along with the starting date and hour (in 24-hour format) – it’s not valid otherwise.
Cards can’t be returned or refunded. However, if you bought one and didn’t use it, you can use it later or on your next visit. Just be aware that Budapest Cards have a maximum validity of 1 year from May. So if you buy the card in August 2023, it can be used until 1 May 2024.
Museums are generally closed on Monday, so check the opening hours on each of the official museum websites.
Once you purchase your card, it’s important to register it online (optional). It only takes a few minutes, and if your precious Budapest Card is lost, you can get a replacement card from the Budapest Infopoint with the same validity as the original card, topped up with all the unused benefits.

3-Day Sightseeing Itinerary with the Budapest Card

This itinerary mixes a range of activities and attractions to give you a broad taste of Budapest, including history, culture, food, nature and relaxation. I didn’t focus on the discounted restaurants included with the Budapest Card, but opted for vegan-friendly eateries that have a solid track record for quality.

Arrive – reach Budapest by air, train or bus in the afternoon and pick up your Budapest Card at the relevant location. If possible, head to your hotel or apartment and check-in first, so your hands are free. I recommend picking up your Budapest Card from Varoshaza Park as the staff are very knowledgeable and can help you fine-tune your itinerary and answer any questions. Remember to sign the back of the card.

5pm – Self-guided walking tour . Take a glance down the famous Fashion Street , wander through Elizabeth Square , rub the belly of The Policeman for good luck, and finish by heading west towards St. Stephen’s Basilica, which houses the country’s most sacred relic, the mummified right hand of the first king of Hungary.

Or if food is what tickles your pickle, then wander over to Molnár's kürtőskalács , and try the famous kürtőskalács (Székely festival spit cake, or “chimney cake”), a hollow bread-based dessert. Use your Budapest Card for a 20% discount (or free dessert with 72-hour PLUS card).

7pm – Dinner at Tahina Bite Vegan Food . Mouth-watering Middle Eastern classics like hummus, tabbouleh and falafel. 95% of the menu is gluten-free, and all dishes are free from processed sugar and soy.

8:30pm – Rest up afterwards because the next 3 days will be go, go, go!

10am – Zugliget Chairlift (Libegő) to Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Lookout Tower .Gently soarup the side of János Hill to the top station , over a period of 15 minutes, enjoying panoramic vistas of Budapest along the way. From the top station, it’s about a 10-minute walk north up a steep road to Elizabeth Tower. Entry to the tower is free.

The chairlift base station can be reached by bus 291 (final station). This chairlift is operated by the public transport provider, BKK , so the entry ticket is included with the Budapest Card.

1pm – Lunch at Szabad Bisztró . Amazing vegan food, with lunch specials that rotate every day of the week. They are the first plant-based gastropub of Budapest, with artisan beers, ciders and soft drinks plus burgers, pasta, salads and a few Hungarian specialities.

2:30pm – Kunsthalle (Műcsarnok) . This is an awe-inspiring testament to the city's artistic legacy, housing a diverse collection of contemporary and modern masterpieces that captivate visitors. Entry with card is free.

3:30pm – Museum of Fine Arts . A vast gallery that includes works from antiquity to the late 18 th century, from ancient Egyptian artefacts to masterpieces by Raphael. Entry with card is free.

5pm – Heroes’ Square . An iconic tribute to the nation's storied history, adorned by towering statues and flanked by magnificent colonnades. Free access.

5:15pm – Rest , under a shady tree in the nearby park .

6:30pm – Dinner at Yes It’s Vegan 2 . Their plant-based interpretations of traditional Hungarian cuisine have earned rave reviews from satisfied customers. This is the place for vegans to try goulash.

8pm – Drinks . Have a few drinks at one of the many famous ruin bars, like Instant-Fogas Complex, which is only a 6-minute walk away.

9am – Central Market Hall . An integral part of the city since its inauguration in 1897, serving as a hub for trading, social gatherings, and the celebration of Hungarian traditions. Stroll through the fragrant halls, and try free taste tests. Free access.

10am - Hungarian National Museum . Founded in 1802, the museum holds a revered position as the country's premier historical institution, showcasing an extensive collection of artifacts, artworks, and documents, each intricately woven into the tapestry of Hungary's past, preserving and presenting the nation's rich history and cultural legacy. Entry with card is free.

12pm – Lunch at Las Vegan’s . Eat quick at Hungary's first vegan food truck hamburger restaurant, because there’s a lot to cram in this afternoon. Or if you’re a meat-eater and want a taste of traditional Hungarian goulash, you can’t go past the quirky For Sale Pub (a pot of goulash is 1 litre!).

12:45pm – Budapest Castle Bus ( website ). This oversized electric golf cart drives around Buda castle complex, stopping at 4 convenient locations, and departing every 10 minutes. Ride with card is free.

1pm – Church of Saint Mary Magdalene . Exit bus at stop 2 (behind the church). This 600-year-old lookout tower offers panoramic views of the whole city. If you’re feeling fit, climb to the top of the tower. But be aware, the winding staircase can be very narrow at some points, so this is not for the faint of heart or claustrophobic. Entry with card is free.

1:30pm – Mediaeval Jewish Prayer House . A small collection of exhibits and images from the 16 th and 17 th centuries which reflect life within the Jewish quarter of the Buda Castle during the Middle Ages Entry with card is free.

1:45pm – Classic Buda Walking Tour (meeting at Holy Trinity Statue in front of Matthias Church). This tour covered a fair amount of the Buda Castle complex, but only the exteriors. I found the information provided by the guide was a little inaccurate at times, so best to fact-check anything that sounds unusual. Tour with card is free.

4pm – Castle Museum . Located in a wing of the former Royal Palace, visitors can tour the halls to discover the museum’s unique treasures and exhibitions and gain insight into Budapest’s rich history. The museum is only open until 6pm, so you’ll need to go double speed to see everything! Entry with card is free.

6:45pm – Dinner at Édeni Vegán , and rest. Catch the tram north to Batthyány tér M+H station . This cute vegan restaurant is located a stone’s-throw away from the tram stop, so you don’t have to walk too far. Put your feet up after the thousands of steps you’ve already done today.

8:15pm – Now you’re just a couple minutes’ walk to the west bank of the Danube river . Opposite the Hungarian Parliament building, watch the beautiful lights come on. It’s magical… and free! Or if you’ve got the Budapest 72 hour PLUS card, use your free evening Danube River cruise with Legenda City Cruises . Check their website for the latest timetable based on the season (they depart from the east bank). Free access.

10am – Thermal bath of your choosing. Go with the St. Lukács thermal bath for free entry with the Bupdest Card, or use the 20% discount on one of the more famous larger baths like Széchenyi Bath (although it’s a little further out of the way). Remember to bring your own towel and swimwear. Entry with card is free (St. Lukács thermal bath).

1pm – Lunch at The Planteen . Located around the corner from the next stop, this is the first vegan canteen in Hungary, and features daily specials.

2pm – Aquincum Museum . More detail… Nestled amidst the ancient ruins of Aquincum, this museum provides a captivating window into the Roman past, preserving and showcasing the remnants of this once-vibrant provincial capital.

3:30pm – Chill out on Margitsziget (Margaret Island) and ride a rental bike. Find out how the MOL Bubi bike system works . And check the location of bike stations and live availability here . As you bike around, look out for a shady, grassy spot and take a rest, soaking up the warm breeze and peaceful vibes. If you’re looking for a selfie spot, check out this big “Budapest” sign . Later return your bike to this location , which is just around the corner from dinner.

7:30pm – Dinner at Tökmag Vegan Street Food . Eye-catching dishes that are health conscious too. What more could you ask for? Tip: try the nachos burger.

8:45pm – Budapest pub crawl . Go out with a bang on your last night. Hang out with a fun group of party people, and explore Budapest’s famous ruin bars, guided by a friendly nightlife expert. Tip: the meeting place is in front of Burger King Oktogon .

Whether you are looking for a single ticket, a day pass or an Amsterdam Travel Card, here you will find all the information you need. In this guide we present the most important tickets for visitors. So you can easily find the right ticket for your stay in Amsterdam.

Important information about buying tickets:

You cannot buy tickets on buses and trams from the driver.
Many of the tickets are available online and can be purchased before your trip. You will find more information below.
Almost all public transport in Amsterdam is organized under the tariff system of the municipal transport company GVB “Gemeente Vervoer Bedrijf”. This makes it much easier for passengers, as a day ticket is valid on the metro, trams and GVB buses.

#1 Single rides with the OV chip card / “e-purse” or OVpay

If you are staying in amsterdam for a longer period of time but do not want to use public transport very often.

The OV card / e-purse system is not that simple, especially if you don’t visit the Netherlands often.

How does the OV card / e-purse work?

The OV card works like a prepaid cellphone card. You can load the card with a certain amount of money at a machine and then use it up.

For a single ride, you will pay a fixed base price plus a set amount per kilometer driven. Thus, you are paying for the distance traveled. The distance is measured exactly every 50 metres and charged accordingly. There is no such thing as a classic one-way ticket , which costs a certain amount regardless of the distance travelled (flat rate). The OV chip card / e-purse can be used in trams, buses, as well as the Metro.

Every passenger over the age of 4 must have a chip card.
The card must be topped up with at least €4 before each journey to ensure that there are sufficient funds to cover the fare.

E-purse – prices

A rechargeable and anonymous chip card, without personalisation with a passport-type photo, costs €7.50 (without adding credit). There is a €2.50 service charge for withdrawing any remaining balance.

Standard fare: base price: €1.08 per trip plus 19.6 cents per kilometer traveled

Children (4–11 years) get a discounted fare: base price: 71 cents per trip plus 12.9 cents per kilometer traveled

Another payment system was introduced in 2023: OVpay. You can pay for a single journey on local public transport directly with your credit or debit card. All you have to do is present your payment card to a scanner when boarding and alighting. The fare will be automatically debited from your account.

Paying with OVpay – important information:

You must always check in and out with the sa me bank card. Otherwise, the billing system will not be able to determine the correct fare.
For single journeys, you will need a separate payment card for each passenger.
In addition to the fares, credit card or exchange rate fees may also apply.
A journey with an age discount (e.g. children’s fare) is not yet possible with OVpay.
Don’t forget to check out with your payment card when you get off the bus. The fare depends on the distance traveled. If you do not check out, you will be charged an incorrect, usually higher fare.
There is no daily limit, as there is in London. This means that you can pay significantly more per day with OVpay than with a day ticket (see below).

#2 GVB single day ticket or multi-day-ticket: Easy & affordable – ideal for visitors & tourists – optional Airport Express bus

Cheap & easy: the single-day-ticket with a validity of 1 – 7 days. Buy online and save time and stress in Amsterdam.

GVB single and multi-day tickets are popular with visitors to Amsterdam. They are easy to use and affordable.

What does this ticket offer?

This ticket gives you unlimited travel on all GVB trams, city buses and the metro (day and night) throughout Amsterdam and you don’t have to keep an eye on your balance like you do with the e-purse.
It is flexible in terms of time. Tickets are available for a single day and for up to 7 days , from 24 to 168 hours. The clock starts ticking at the time of first use.
There is a day ticket, especially for children aged 4 to 11. The kids’ ticket is only valid for a single day. You can purchase more than one child’s day ticket if required.

This ticket is not valid for other regional bus companies, such as Connexxion or EBS, or in trains of the Dutch railway company NS

GVB Ticket Child

Children aged 0-3 travel free on Amsterdam’s public transport. For children between 4 and 11 years of age, the GVB children’s day ticket is available at a reduced price.

Children aged 0–3 years can use public transport in Amsterdam free of charge. There is a reduced day ticket for children between the ages of 4 and 11. It currently (2024) costs €4.50. There is no multi-day pass for children.

If you need a children’s ticket for several days, the easiest way is to buy several one-day children’s tickets. You can buy GVB children’s day tickets online together with adult tickets.

Where is the GVB day ticket valid?

The GVB day ticket is valid on the entire GVB tram, underground and bus network.

If your destination or accommodation is outside the validity area, you might be interested in the Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket (see below). This ticket is valid for the entire region around Amsterdam.

# 3 Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket: Trips around Amsterdam + airport transfer included

The Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket entitles you to:

Unlimited use of all GVB streetcars, city buses, metro (day and night) and ferries . This allows you to travel within the city of Amsterdam in the same way as the GVB Day Ticket (see above).
In addition, you can also use the buses of the Connexxion and EBS companies . These bus companies serve destinations outside the Amsterdam city area. The GVB day ticket (see above) is not valid on these buses. This also includes the Airport Express Bus 397 (shuttle bus to the airport) .
Trains in the Amsterdam region with the national railroad company NS are included.

You can buy this ticket before your trip via the GVB authorized ticket portal (click here) . This will save you time and stress during your stay in Amsterdam.

Current prices for the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket (2024)

With the Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket you can travel in a much larger area than with a GVB day pass. Therefore the price is higher.

The validity period is different from the GVB day ticket. The “Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket” is valid from the first check-in until 04.00 a.m. after the last valid day (depending on whether you have the 1, 2 or 3 day version). The day starts at midnight.

For example: If you use a 2-day ticket for the first time from midnight on Wednesday, then your ticket will be valid until 04:00 on Friday morning.

#4 Amsterdam Travel Ticket (ATT)

The Amsterdam Travel Ticket (ATT) is an extension of the GVB single day or multi-day-ticket described above. It can be considered an extension because with this ticket you also have the option of using the following unlimited times for your transfer to and from Schiphol airport :

Unlimited 2nd class rail travel between train station “Schiphol Amsterdam” Airport and any train station in Amsterdam (Amstel, Bijlmer Arena, Amsterdam Centraal Station , Holendrecht, Lelylaan, Muiderpoort, RAI, Sciencepark, Sloterdijk, Zuid and Duivendrecht)
The Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397) operated by Connexxion and the Niteliner (bus N97).

This ticket also entitles you to unlimited travel on all GVB trams, (night) buses, metro and ferries in the whole of Amsterdam. However, its validity is regulated differently. The “Amsterdam Travel Ticket” is valid from the first check-in until 4 AM following the last valid day (depending on whether you have booked the 1, 2 or 3 day option). The day starts at midnight. For example: if you start using a 2-day ticket at midnight on Wednesday, then it will be valid until 4 AM on Friday.

The main tickets for visitors and tourists

Here we present what we consider to be the most important tickets for visitors and tourists. For the sake of clarity, we have not included tickets for longer stays, such as monthly tickets, annual tickets, etc. in this list.

Tickets for public transport in Barcelona: the choice is huge. Choosing the right ticket before you travel will save you time and money.

1) Single Ticket

If you want to use the public transport occasionally.

The classic single ticket is the right choice if you only use public transport occasionally. With a single ticket you can, for example, travel on a TMB city bus or use the metro.

Single ticket – current price

The current price (2024) for a single ticket is EUR 2.55. You can buy it from ticket machines.

Single tickets for the local transport companies TMB and FGC in Barcelona. These tickets are not valid on the airport metro / railway lines.

Specific regulations of the single ticket in Barcelona:

A single ticket does NOT entitle you to use the metro to/from the airport. You need to buy an extra ticket called an “airport ticket”, which costs €5.50 (one way) or €11 (return). Many visitors therefore buy the cheap day ticket “Hola BCN” (see below for details). This ticket includes metro or train service between the city center and the airport. In addition, it offers unlimited travel in all Barcelona’s public transport services for the period of validity (2-5 days).
Bus, metro and tram have different single tickets , which may not be valid in the other transport system. The 10-Ticket “T-casual” or the “Hola BCN” travel card will get you around this problem.

2) Travel card “Hola BCN!” for 2–5 days: cheap & easy to use

Unlimited travel on bus, metro, tram, suburban train + metro to/from airport.

The “Hola Barcelona Travel Card” is very popular with visitors to the city because it’s easy and convenient to use. You don’t have to deal with the fares and ticketing systems of Barcelona’s 5 transport companies.

One ticket, several names:

Until 2019, this ticket was called “Hola BCN! Now it has a new name: “Hola Barcelona Travel Card”. Apart from the name and the design of the cards, nothing has changed.

One ticket for almost all local transport:

The “Hola BCN” card offers you unlimited journeys using the metro (subway), city buses (TMB), tram, regional railway (Rodalies de Catalunya, Zone 1), urban railway (FGC, zone 1) and the funicular railway (Funicular de Montjuïc).

If I buy a 3 day card, does it cover a full 72 hours from the time of purchase? You can start using your Hola BCN! card at any time of the day and enjoy all the benefits of unlimited travel for 48 (2 day card), 72 (3 day card), 96 (4 day card) or 120 (5 day card) hours from the first use (validation).

Is there a discount for children or a children’s ticket for the Hola BCN Travel card? Children under the age of four do not need a ticket. They travel free. Older children require a standard Hola BCN! card.

The Barcelona Card is available for 72h, 96h or 120h (3, 4 or 5 consecutive days).

The Barcelona Card also gives you priority access to some attractions (skip the queue). This saves you having to queue at the entrance.

4) 10 journey ticket “T-Casual” former “ATM T-10”

Cheaper than a single ticket – airport transfer is not possible.

The 10 journey card “T-10” will no longer be available from 2020. It is now called “T-Casual”. The “T-Casual” card is suitable for you, if you have a longer stay in Barcelona with a rare use of the public transport.

With the T-Casual card you can use the metro, trams, suburban trains (Rodalies) or buses a total of 10 times.

The T-Casual card cannot be used by several people at the same time.

Prices for the 10-ticket (T-Casual)

A ride with this ticket is cheaper than by a “single ticket”. The ticket “T-Casual” currently costs (2024):

for one zone: €12.15
for 2 zones: €23.90

It is available at the ticket vending machines.

The 10-ride “T-10” card no longer exists. It is now called “T-Casual”. This card is not valid for the airport lines of the underground/trains.

Specific regulations of the “T-Casual” ticket:

The 10-ticket “T-Casual” does not include the metro ride to or from the airport . A separate ticket (airport ticket – €10.30 return) is required. This is why many visitors buy the day ticket “Hola BCN” (see above) . This allows you to travel to and from the airport and use Barcelona’s public transport for the chosen period (2-5 days).
With a “T-Casual” 1-zone ticket, you have 75 minutes between the first and last validation when changing lines or mode of transport.
The T-Casual card cannot be used by more than one person at the same time. This was possible with the “T-10” card, which is no longer available.

5) Group ticket for travel groups or school classes

For larger groups, school classes, etc. there is no convenient group ticket.

HolaBCN Travel Card for travel groups

Many travel groups therefore use the HolaBCN ticket .

With this ticket you can use public transport cheaply and unlimitedly (including airport transfers by metro). Each member of the group gets their own card. This means that someone in your group can also travel individually.

Your voucher must be printed and exchanged at one of the 17 Barcelona Tourism Offices or other tourist information points. There are two at Barcelona airport (terminals 1 and 2). You can exchange your voucher direct at the BCN Airport and use the Metro from Airport to City Center with your HolaBCN Card. So you save the money for the standard Metro Airport Ticket (4.50 Euro one way).

If we arrive at Barcelona Sants rail station, can we exchange the voucher at the train station to ride the bus or metro into the city?

there is a “Turisme de Barcelona tourist information point” direct at Barcelona Sants railway station. There you can exchange your voucher. Than you can use the Metro, city bus… Opening Times : daily, from 8am to 8pm.

your aircraft lands at 12.15? Due to waiting times, e.g. at the baggage claim, you will not enter the metro at Friday before 13.00. To depart Monday at 13:00, you must check in at the airport before 13:00. The 3 day Hola BCN! is valid for 72h as of the first validation. So from our point of view, the 3 day card is the right card for you.

Hello Dayo, 1) Once you have purchased the Hola Barcelona Travel Card, you have 90 days from the day of purchase to validate your card. After that, i.e. after the first validation, the card will expire depending on the number of hours you have on your card. For example, if you validate the 2-day card (48 hours) on Tuesday at 8am, you can travel unlimited until Thursday at 8am.

In Rome, visitors can purchase different types of transport tickets and travel cards depending on the number of days they stay in the city and how often they plan on using public transportation there.

Types of transport tickets

One-way ticket (bit).

The BIT ticket lasts 75 minutes since its first validation and allows for unlimited transfers between the metro, buses, trams and urban trains . The only transfer that is not allowed is to leave the metro and return (by the metro turnstiles), even if it’s in the 75 minutes of validity. The ticket costs € 1.50 ( US$ 1.60).

MetroBus 24 hours

This ticket allows unlimited public transportation from the moment the ticket is validated until midnight of the same day. The MetroBus 24 hours costs € 7 ( US$ 7.50).

MetroBus 48 hours

The 48-hour ticket allows unlimited use of Rome's public transport for 48 hours from the time it is first used. The price is € 12.50 ( US$ 13.40) .

MetroBus 72 hours

It allows unlimited use of public transport for 72 hours from the time it is used for the first time. The price is € 18 ( US$ 19.30) .

Weekly pass

If you're going to spend a week in Rome and you plan to use public transport a lot, the ideal option for you is the weekly pass, as you'll be able to use unlimited public transport for 7 days . The price is € 24 ( US$ 25.70) .

What I like about these rewards is all the options they give you. If you get a card that earns airline miles, you can only use your miles with that airline. But if you get a card with rewards you can transfer to 10 or more airlines, it's much easier to book the travel you want.

2. Airport lounge access

Many travel cards include a membership to an airport lounge program. This usually doesn't come cheap. Most credit cards with airport lounge access have annual fees of about $400 or more. Still, with lounge access and the other perks these premium travel cards offer, the value you get can easily outweigh the annual fee.

If you're a frequent flyer, airport lounge access is nice to have. Lounges are certainly more comfortable places to wait for a flight than the general boarding area. The seating is better, there's free food and drinks, and some lounges have quiet relaxation rooms.

To keep expectations in check, most lounges aren't super luxurious, and they can get crowded. The quality varies from lounge to lounge, too. I've been in some that I loved, some lousy ones, and a whole lot that landed somewhere in between. What is the best travel credit card for a young person?

If you’re still paying rent, the Bilt Mastercard is an excellent choice since it can generate points from rent payments which can then be transferred 1:1 to well over a dozen airline and hotel partners. Is a travel card with an annual fee worth it?

Using a travel rewards card with an annual fee can be worth it as long as you’re extracting enough points and benefits to justify paying the fee each year. If you travel infrequently or just want one less fee to worry about, consider one of the no-annual-fee cards on our list above. But, the best perks and protections are typically available on cards with annual fees.

For example, the Capital One Venture X card offers a $300 annual travel credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel. If you use that every year, you’ve gone a long way toward offsetting the $395 annual fee. You also get 10,000 bonus miles, worth at least $100 toward travel, every year starting on your account anniversary.

Methodology

To bring you our top picks for the best travel rewards cards with no annual fee, the Fortune Recommends surveyed more than a dozen cards currently available from today’s top issuers. From there, we ranked each one based on the following core categories and weights:

Welcome bonus (10%): Some cards—even those with no annual fee—offer welcome bonuses that you can earn once you make enough purchases within a certain time frame, such as spending $1,000 within three months of account opening.
Travel earnings (25%): These are the point rewards you’d earn by making travel-related purchases (e.g. 3X on hotels, 2X on airfare).
Car rental insurance (15%): Many, but not all travel-centric rewards cards include an auto rental collision damage waiver, which allows you to decline a portion of the rental company’s insurance and save potentially up to $30 per day. We gave extra consideration to if a card offers primary rental car insurance versus secondary, because primary kicks in immediately in a covered scenario—whereas secondary only applies after your own, personal insurance.
Travel insurance benefits (15%): Some travel rewards cards automatically apply trip cancellation/interruption insurance, lost/delayed luggage reimbursement and even travel accident insurance on travel bookings made using the card.
Gas earning (5%): Since road trips remain a common form of travel, whether or not a card offers points rewards at the pump factored into our rankings.
Dining earning (10%): If a no-annual-fee travel rewards card offered 2X or more on restaurant purchases it favored well in this category.

The remaining 20% was based on the card’s main focus: hotel, airline or general travel rewards.

For general travel—points transferrable to partners (20%): Points are literally worth more if you can transfer them to certain partners, so a card’s ability to transfer rewards to airline and hotel partners factored into our rankings.
For hotel rewards—free award night with booking (20%): Some hotel rewards cards offer a BOGO-like perk where if you redeem a certain number of nights with points you get an extra tacked on for free.
For airline rewards—ability to spend towards status (20%): Most airline rewards cards allow you to earn miles, but not all of them count those miles towards your next loyalty status. If a card treated them as “qualifying miles,” it fared better in this category.

Lastly, just keep in mind that virtually every aspect of a travel rewards card—from the rewards to the welcome bonus and fee structure—is subject to change, which could impact how many miles or points you earn.
