I was lucky enough to hear the infinitely talented and amazing Limousines perform live and in concert. They had a great light show and images on stage that really caught your attention. Their music still managed to be the stand out and it was pure perfection from the first note to the last. They belted out amazing notes with dramatic timing and lovely tone and the fast drum beats elevated the songs to a whole other level of amazing. It was an emotionally powerful performance, especially on the song Haunted. The voice of the lead singer was about as perfect as a singer can get. I was shocked and could not believe how great he was.

They engaged the crowd mainly by just being great performers and putting on a great show with great music. People bobbed their head along with the music while paying total attention to the stage, enraptured by the haunting raspy voice of the lead singer. No one was leaving that room until he was done singing, because it was just something you had to hear, you wanted to hear, you wanted to never stop hearing.

I would highly recommend seeing The Limousines live to everyone that loves great music with great vocal performances.

The lowrider culture, which began in California, spans generations, global boundaries

NPR's A Martinez talks with Denise Sandoval, professor of Chicana and Chicano studies at California State University, Northridge, about how lowrider culture has endured and spread.

WAR: (Singing) Take a little trip. Take a little trip. Take a little trip with me.

A MARTÍNEZ, BYLINE: Let's take that trip to Southern California in the '70s and '80s, when, as a kid, I would go with my uncles to places in L.A. where lowriders cruised the boulevards. Beautifully painted classic cars, basically rolling art installations with chrome rims and whitewall tires. From Cadillac Eldorados to Chevy Impalas, all riding low and slow, hugging the pavement set on hydraulics to let the driver raise it instantly by literally flipping a switch.

(SOUNDBITE OF HYDRAULICS PUMPING)

MARTÍNEZ: I remember asking a lowrider owner why it did that. First, his head recoiled. Then his face leaned forward in the mind and he said in an annoyed, sarcastic tone that I'll never forget - so the cops don't give me a ticket. I learned two things after that exchange - one, don't ask that guy any more questions, and two, that in 1958, the California Vehicle Code banned modifying cars so the frame is lower than the bottom of the wheel rim. By putting them on hydraulics, they'd be lowriders one second and then street-legal vehicles the next. California only last year ended a restriction that many felt targeted Mexican Americans. We went to the city of San Fernando to talk to some lowrider enthusiasts. Here's Fernando Perez - or Birdman - Elbert Morales and Cesar Ibarra.

FERNANDO PEREZ: It's, like, how I am, how we are, the way I dress, the way I walk, the way I talk, the way I look, the way my car is.

ELBERT MORALES: I recommend it for the younger kids, get into lowrider bikes and get the tradition going.

CESAR IBARRA: It's a family thing. We go out cruising with the family. It's not a hobby for me, it's my lifestyle. I grew up into this, you know, it's. - and it's something that I always followed. My youngest daughter loves it. You know, she's also looking for a car to follow her dad's footsteps. Yeah.

MARTÍNEZ: To learn more about how this lowrider culture spans generations, we called up Denise Sandoval. She's a professor of Chicana and Chicano studies at Cal State, Northridge.

DENISE SANDOVAL: It's not just involving the craftsmanship of these fantastic cars. Lowriding is something that's part of people's everyday lives where they just cruise to have fun, hang out in the park. Oftentimes in Chicano communities, people use lowriders instead of limousines for quinceaneras and weddings. Lowriders talk about it being a way of life, and it's larger than just the style of the car.

MARTÍNEZ: How are younger people adapting - if they are - to lowrider culture?

SANDOVAL: I see the culture, like, at the shows and on the streets as being multigenerational. Lowriders, they talk about it as, like, we're a lowrider family, creating space for the family to celebrate community, to celebrate the culture. And some people even say, you know, pride of being, like, Chicano. But classic cars are really expensive to buy now. These old cars can be, like, $30,000 and up.

MARTÍNEZ: Things are getting expensive in all kinds of ways. But when you got a generation of teenagers or even young adults who are trying to figure out a way to pay for college or for their student loans, or in California, find a place to live that doesn't break the bank, I would think that it might be hard to pass on this lowrider culture when it is kind of such an expensive hobby now to have.

SANDOVAL: Yeah. And I think on the other hand, I think is there's a lot of younger men and even women that are getting into the custom work of whether it be, like, painting or hydraulics. You also need to pass down the knowledge to a younger generation of craftsmen that can do that work, as well. So you see it with lowrider bicycle clubs where you see a lot of, like, young boys and even girls that are learning to sort of - the appreciation for customizing their bicycle and the teamwork. So there are aspects in the culture right now that integrate sort of the children and the younger generation into the culture.

MARTÍNEZ: If someone were to just quickly look, you know, for a video or pictures of lowriders, you usually see men around these lowriders. But women play a huge role, and have for a long time, in lowrider culture.

SANDOVAL: I think what we've seen in, like, the last, like, six, seven years is, like, a lot more women-only car clubs. And, like, some of them got their lowrider from their mom, like, their mom was a solo rider back in the day. And that's pretty cool. So...

MARTÍNEZ: Yeah.

SANDOVAL: ...I think today, women are stepping out. Some car clubs that were exclusively just for men are becoming coed. So there's a lot of changing in the, like, gender politics. They were like, we're not going to wait to be invited into these car clubs.

SANDOVAL: We're just going to create our own.

MARTÍNEZ: Even though it started in California and grew around the Southwest of the United States, it has now exploded all over the world. Japan has a thriving lowrider culture, and that's just one spot.

SANDOVAL: Yeah. Lowriding definitely is global. You know, Japan has been part of the community since the '90s. And then also in, like, places like Brazil and, like, Spain and, like, Paris and Belgium, they're using their cars to express themselves, to build community and be part of this larger lowrider movement.

MARTÍNEZ: Aside from keeping something beautiful going - because the cars are beautiful - why is it important for lowrider culture to continue to grow, thrive and exist?

SANDOVAL: I think that culture is the one way that communities, particularly working-class communities, historically have created space for themselves to not just express how they want to portray their culture, but to also participate in what we call, like, American popular culture. And I see a lot of similarities with, like, lowriding and hip-hop. How these cultures emerged out of communities that were experiencing, like, segregation, racism. When you see how culture was used in the Civil Rights Movements of the '60s and the '70s, like, the music, the art - right? - it's sort of foundational to empowering us to think about not only how we should take pride in our culture, but demand equality. So I think it really speaks to the dynamic way that cultural expressions, whether it be music or cars, allow people a way to not just exist but survive and also thrive.

Of course, you will also learn more about the stories that once happened behind the thick walls of the Kremlin – from the Tsars and Napoleon to Stalin. Then we continue through the idyllic Alexander Garden.

«First acquaintance with Moscow» – a 2.5-hour city tour in the center of Moscow

This Moscow city tour starts on the Theater Square, past Lubyanka Square and the KGB-building, then through Kitay Gorod district and Varvarka Street, past the world-famous St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then it goes across Zarjadje Park, over Red Square at the Lenin Mausoleum, the GUM-department store and towards the Historical Museum. We walk through the Alexander Garden.

A 3.5-hour car/bus tour of Moscow.

This is the best tour of Moscow city as all the important sights are visited. I am your Moscow city guide who will walk you through the city explaining the charming history of the city. This tour begins with picking you up from the hotel. 3 breaks are offered for photographing.

First, we will visit the most famous riverside streets and bridges in the center of the city with the most beautiful views of the Kremlin and the Moskva River (e.g. the Kremlin embankment and the Great Stone Bridge).

The first photo break is made at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. We then pass by the district with numerous museums, Prechistinka Street and the district with numerous medical areas.

We again stop at the Novodevichy Convent, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the other bank of the Moskva River to click pictures.

Then we visit “Sparrow Hills” where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city of Moscow from the observation deck. Then there are the skyscrapers of Moscow-City, the Kutuzov avenue, the New Arbat, Tverskaya Street, the world-famous Bolshoi Theater, the KGB building and Varvarka Street. Here there are ample spots to click pictures.

We then drive past the Kremlin again and finally reach Red Square. We take a short tour of Red Square and say goodbye in the Alexander Garden.

Metro tour – daily

Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

Alternative Moscow Tour – daily

Kremlin tour – daily (closed on Thursday)

With its 20 towers and high walls, the Kremlin rises imposingly over Red Square. This world-famous fortress with its area of ​​28 hectares is home to over 800 years of Russian history. Described as the eighth wonder of the world, this historic fortress complex is the principal symbol of Russia that sits on the banks of the Moscow River. Today the Kremlin still harbors numerous secrets and has palaces and cathedrals, surrounded by Kremlin Wall. The current wall was constructed between the 15 th  and 16 th  centuries, but the original wall was made of wood around the year 1147. The Kremlin Wall became an important symbol of Moscow’s importance in the Russian Empire. A military tour – riding on tanks in Stupino (Moscow region)

Russian Military is one of the largest military forces in the world formed in 1992. Jeff Lynne's ELO announce final tour: How to get tickets to Over and Out

Jeff Lynne’s ELO dazzled audiences with a show of sonic perfection when the band reappeared in the U.S. in 2018-2019.

Now, the melodic wizard and his ace musical comrades will hit the road a final time for The Over and Out Tour. A 27-date outing will commence Aug. 24 in Palm Desert, California and wrap Oct. 25 in Los Angeles. In between, Lynne and ELO will visit cities including Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Houston and Washington, D.C.

Lynne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023 and ELO ushered into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Drive-By Truckers to Journey Through the Past, Playing ‘Southern Rock Opera’ on Tour

More than two decades since its release, Drive-By Truckers ‘ Southern Rock Opera album will get its full due when the band performs the 94-minute double-album in its entirety on an extensive U.S. tour. The Truckers also promise to play fan favorites and deep cuts from throughout their career.

Tickets for the tour, which kicks off in June, officially go on sale March 29 at 10 a.m. local time. Full ticketing information is on the band’s website . Fans can also request tickets early via Ticketmaster.

“A lot has happened in the decades since it came out, both to the band and to the world we live in,” the band’s Patterson Hood said in a statement. “We feel that the record, while somewhat timeless, also has a current timeliness to it considering the social and political issues of today. Instead of performing it as if it’s still 2000AD, we want to make it our own, reflecting who we all are now in 2024. It’s going to be intense, but also a hell of a lot of fun.”

Although Southern Rock Opera was not the Truckers’ commercial breakthrough – that came a couple of years later with The Dirty South – it became a critical success despite coming out on Sept. 12, 2001. In addition to releasing in the wake of a national tragedy, the album suffered from poor distribution and the band had to re-release it in 2002.

“It’s been overwhelming to me,” Hood told Rolling Stone in 2002 of the reception the album got. “The whole time we were working on it, which dates back six years, everybody told us we were crazy and it was a stupid idea. We were told a thousand reasons why it wouldn’t work, everybody from some friends all the way to anybody even slightly connected to the music industry. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
