Rainbow over the Na Pali Coast

Paradise found

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting all the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Each island in the emerald chain has its own distinctive landscape and offers a palette of adventures, activities and cultural experiences for every age and taste.

That being said, the first Hawaiian island I visited decades ago, Kauai, is the island my mind and heart always return to when I recall some of my most memorable vacation experiences. One of the most iconic and photogenic views of Kauai’s majestic Na Pali Coast can be seen from the Kalalau Lookout.

If you’re lucky, as we were, nature will treat you to a majestic rainbow as you soak in the astounding beauty from this viewpoint.

Poipu Beach Park

If you’re looking for a beach vacation, especially for families with small children, consider a stay in Kauai’s south shore where rainfall is less frequent and sunshine more abundant than on the rest of the island. The shores of Poipu Beach Park offer a lovely protected area for swimming and snorkeling.

A bit down the road, be sure to check out the island's famous Spouting Horn, a blowhole that not only produces a dramatic cloud of water, but also a loud moaning sound that is always a hit with the kids.

Trail towards Hanakapi'ai Beach

A trail to remember

Kauai is a paradise for hikers, no matter what your skill level. Beautiful trails crisscross the island, but if you're looking for the ultimate hike when you visit, the Kalalau Trail is the most famous on Kauai (and arguably in all of Hawaii).

While the full 11-mile trail is only for seasoned hikers and requires camping overnight, casual hikers can opt for the magnificently picturesque 2-mile trail to the pristine Hanakapi’ai Beach . The trail can be slippery because of bursts of rainfall (nearby Mount Wai’ale’ale is one of the wettest spots on earth), so make sure to wear good hiking shoes!

Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana

A taste of culture

No doubt during your visit to Kauai, you’ll want to experience a traditional Hawaiian luau, complete with local cuisine and a moving cultural experience. The Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana, one of the largest luaus in the state, delivers both.  This luau experience shines for its after-dinner show, which relates the history of Kauai’s culture in dramatic detail.

Waimea Canyon State Park

Kauai's Grand Canyon

Often touted as "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Kauai’s Waimea Canyon is a not-to-be-missed destination when you visit the island. The Waimea Canyon Lookout is one of several vantage points along the canyon rim, and offers an incredible vista over this natural wonder.

Riding an ATV through Kauai

Adrenaline rush

Need to get your adrenaline running? ATV tours are the rage in many a destination, but in Kauai, the experience with Kipu Ranch Adventures provides the thrill of a Jurassic Park backdrop (much of the movie was filmed on Kauai) coupled with maneuvering your vehicle up hills and down valleys, and even through muddy streams!

Kayaking the Hanalei River

Rollin' down the river

To many, the peaceful nature of gliding down a river or bay in a kayak is the ultimate way to enjoy the beauty of this island. There are four rivers in Kauai you can kayak, and one of the most peaceful is the Hanalei River, with its lush vegetation and serene water.

You can ocean kayak, too, if a more adventurous kayak experience is your preference. You'll easily find rental companies across the island, so go explore!

Shrimp salad

Seafood heaven

Kauai offers a wide range of cuisine, but if you're a lover of seafood, you’ll be in heaven when you visit here. The fresh shrimp, culled daily from the deep ocean waters, are a culinary delight. You can also enjoy the local fish catches, such as the succulent ono, indigenous to the islands, as well as mahi-mahi and tuna, among other fruits of the sea.

Tip: Should you be cooking on your own, in addition to the local fish markets that dot the island, the Costco store in Lihue carries an incredible variety of sustainably caught fish, including shrimp harvested from local waters.

Lydgate Beach Park

Snorkeling wonderland

If you’ve never snorkeled and are apprehensive about it, join the club! My first snorkeling experience took place in Kauai’s Lydgate Beach Park , and for a good reason. It has a boulder-enclosed pool that allows sea water and colorful fish in, but keeps out the ocean waves.

You can snorkel peacefully for hours here. My most vivid memory of this experience was swimming through schools of beautiful blue fish, as well as having a family of sea turtles glide by me!

Plumeria on Kauai

Flower power

Everyone gushes over the flowering plants of Kauai – and no wonder. There’s a good reason Kauai is known as the "Garden Isle." Everywhere you look, be it in formal gardens or hiking on the trails, you'll see tropical blooms that will take your breath away.

The delicate plumeria, source of the traditional Hawaiian lei, is in bloom everywhere on this fertile island.

Golfing in Princeville

A golfer's paradise

Can you imagine teeing off with such a view?  Kauai’s northern community of Princeville is renowned for its luxury ocean bluff resorts, as well as its outstanding golf courses. You’ll have to take care to keep your eyes on the ball – and not on the truly spectacular views – while playing a round at the Princeville Makai Golf Club.

Kilauea Lighthouse

Historic lighthouse

Located on the north shore near Princeville, the Kilauea Lighthouse , built in 1913, is perched at the northernmost tip of Kauai on a windswept bluff. Bird watchers will delight in the amazing numbers of bird species that congregate here, thanks to a sanctuary located directly offshore.

Zip line over Kauai

Zip above tropical forests

If you're a zip line enthusiast, there are quite a few options available from outfitters around Kauai. Swing through paradise over lush tropical forests, enjoy amazing ocean views, and get your heart pumping during this exhilarating ride.

Bike the beautiful byways of Kauai

A biker's kingdom

For an ultimate adventure, consider renting a bike to take you on roads and trails through some of the most spectacular scenery you can imagine. Ride through miles of the Waimea Canyon for a fabulous work-out featuring heart-stopping views. Several outfitters throughout the island offer rentals.

Tubing in Kauai

Tube down a vintage waterway

If you're looking for a unique, relaxing adventure suitable for the entire family (from age 5 to 95!), consider booking a tubing experience with Kauai Backcountry Adventures. You’ll slowly drift downhill along an old sugar cane irrigation ditch, through five tunnels, past tropical vegetation, and enjoy a picnic lunch at the end of your adventure.

Hanalei Bay

A photographer's dream

Kauai is a photographer’s dream, owing not only to the magnificent scenery, but also to the dramatic lighting that seems to change each minute. For example, while walking around Hanalei Bay on a cloudy day, the sun burst out suddenly to create this dramatic image. I had less than a minute to photograph this scene before black clouds and heavy rain rolled in off the ocean.

Horseback riding on Kauai's South Shore

In the saddle

Another unique way to view Kauai’s natural beauty is on horseback. Several companies on the island offer this service, with designated riding trails that will take you to vistas you wouldn’t normally see on foot. The scenic ride along Kauai's magnificent (and sunny) South Shore with CJM Country Stables brought us past spectacular mountain scenery, hidden valleys and secluded beaches.

Queen's Bath

A royal pool

Queen’s Bath , on Kauai’s North Shore, is a marvel of nature;  it's a large pool carved into a lava shelf, fed by fresh seawater thanks to an inlet from the ocean. While swimming is allowed when the surf is low, your best bet is to admire it from the cliffs above.

Kauai’s beaches and pools, while some of the most beautiful on earth, can be deceptively deadly. Always read the official warnings, surf reports, etc. posted along all the island’s beaches, and pay attention to these advisories.

Hanalei Valley

View on Hanalei Valley

On your way to Hanalei on Kauai’s North Shore, you’ll want to make a requisite stop at the Hanalei Valley Lookout (purportedly one of the most photographed lookouts in all of Hawaii), to view verdant mountains sprinkled with waterfalls, endless fields of taro, and a rainbow or two if luck allows.

Roadside farm stand on Kauai

Kauai's cornucopia

Fresh produce is available at farmers markets that seem to be on every street corner or roadside in Kauai. You’ll never taste fruits and vegetables as delicious as these, so definitely indulge.

While driving around the island, you'll come across country stands offering the farm’s fresh produce on an honor system. Just put in your money and collect your produce – how cool is that?

Sunset at Poipu Beach

Aloha to a perfect day in paradise

Finding your zen is never so easy than on the magical, and mystical, island of Kauai – especially while on the beach contemplating a glorious sunset.

360° PANORAMIC INTERACTIVE VIRTUAL IMAGING

Virtual Tour and Panoramic 360° VR Photography is a revolutionary way of showing your business and architecture. Your customers are able to visit you for an interactive walkthrough 24 hours per day / 7 days a week. An interactive virtual tour can easily be integrated on your website. Panoramic 360° VR photography is the imaging solution of the future. The future starts now! VR Tour Kauai is based right here on Kauai and provides high quality interior and exterior panoramic 360 degree photography, virtual tours, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography throughout the Garden Isle. With our virtual reality and Interactive Media, your business or property will get the best visual exposure on your website 24/7.

What Is A 360°x180° Panorama

A 360×180 Degree Panorama, also called Virtual View or Spherical Panorama, is created by joining several photographs together to form a seamless virtual sphere. Viewing a 360 degree panorama provides an Immersive Interactive Experience. It makes you feel as if you are at the center of the scene displayed. A Spherical Panorama is a lot more powerful than traditional photographs and is one of the best ways to visualize a location and present your property.

What Is A Virtual Tour

A Virtual Tour is created by connecting several (2 or more) 360 degree panoramas together into a interactive virtual environment. It is possible to move to other locations by clicking hotspots inside the panorama. This way, an interactive walkthrough is created. To enlarge understanding and navigation of this interactive environment, floor plans with radar and detail photos can be integrated in the tour as well. It is also possible to add audio (music or narration) into virtual tours to enlarge the experience or provide explanation about the viewed location.

Why Consider A Virtual Tour

Most visualization of a place, location or business is achieved through photography. A panorama or virtual tour is the best possible visual solution to present a location beside actually being on location. Read more about the benefits that an interactive walkthrough can have for visualization of your business on the VR Tour Gallery  page.

Where Is A Virtual Tour Useful

There are several examples where an Interactive Virtual Tour can be a very valuable tool for marketing, visualization and presentation both offline and online:

Best Scenic Driving Tours in Kauai

Close your eyes. Picture your dream of Hawaii. What do you see? If you envision lush green fields, wild fruits, towering waterfall-covered mountains, and bountiful white sand beaches, then you are seeing Kauai.

Kauai is known as The Garden Isle. It’s the wettest, a lushest and most verdant island in the state of Hawaii. That’s because it’s a central dormant volcano, Mount Waialeale, which is the rainiest place on earth. Its crater is lovingly referred to as The Blue Hole, and all that rainwater carves its way back to the ocean via Hawaii’s only navigable rivers.

Add tropical heat to all that moisture, and you have a recipe for life; lush, ever-growing life as far as the eye can see. But for all its beauty, Kauai lacks in urbanization. You won’t find any semblance of the city on Hawaii’s westernmost touristed island. The island’s government has even outlawed the construction of buildings taller than a palm tree, so you’d be hard-pressed to find a three-story structure.

This is the island for the outdoor lover and the relaxer. It’s the kind of island that falls asleep early to rise with the sun (and the crowing feral roosters) to challenge the island’s indomitable landscapes. It’s the island for those seeking solitude in a remote paradise far from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

You can see a lot of the island from your car, and you’ll find scenic landscapes in every direction. As you drive around the island, notice that each side -- north, east, south, and west -- has its own climate and landscape. It’s awe-inspiring to see just how much nature can be packed on such a small island, and it’s all waiting for you to explore. Here are Kauai’s six best scenic drives.

Hall of Trees

Hall of Trees

The towering trees that line this road are eucalyptus. Yes, the same eucalyptus trees that koalas feed off of in Australia. If you stop to take a picture of the Hall of Trees, take some time to appreciate the scent of the fragrant leaves.

The northern end of Maluhia Road takes you through a towering tree tunnel, and the trees don’t look like they belong on the tropical island. For a moment, you may feel like you’re in England heading down a long driveway leading to a castle. And the trees bending over the road to make a perfect and massive hallway that will take your breath away.

The tunnel doesn’t last all that long, maybe a third of a mile, but it’s long enough to get lost in its beauty. At one point, you’ll be able to look both backward and forward to see nothing but a tree tunnel. It can feel like a portal to another world.

When you burst out onto the other side, the trees will clear to unveil evergreen pastures. Horses roam these fields, and the area is smattered with much more tropical-looking trees. You’ll be instantly whisked back to Kauai.

And just a little further down the road, you’ll arrive at the historic town of Koloa. This is where they make the island’s only spirit -- Koloa Rum -- and it’s a great place to stop for a snack. The town’s grocery store, Sueoka’s Market, sells box lunches, and you’ll find a charming little ice cream shop right next door. Have a tasty treat while you peruse the small town’s little shops to cap off the drive.

Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay

You’ll gaze upon the valley from up on high. Fields of taro span to the foot of massive inland mountains that are covered in waterfalls. The Hanalei River winds its way to the ocean past the small town of the same name. And the half-moon bay is accentuated by a stunning streak of white sand that sits in stark contrast to the unbelievably blue water of the bay.

As you descend the switchbacks down the cliffside, it feels like you’re entering another world. The air gets hotter and more humid. The landscape changes from dense forest to clear, open fields. A winding river appears. And, at the very bottom of the road, you’ll be presented with the north shore’s first one-lane bridge. Here’s how it works:

Drive slowly. If nobody is coming the other way, cross the bridge. If someone is coming the other way, stop on your side of the bridge off to the right side of the road to allow traffic to pass. Allow five cars to pass, and then it is your turn. It’s a local courtesy to allow five cars to pass before the other side gets their go.

After the one-lane bridge, the road hugs the Hanalei River. The river feeds the fields of taro to the south, and you may see a few stand-up paddleboarders on the slow-moving water. And you’ll get to marvel at the hibiscus flowers floating in the water. Each bloom only opens for a day before dropping into the slow current of the river.

The road will wind its way past high-end restaurants before it enters the small town of Hanalei. You’ll be shocked at all the high-end stores in this remote part of America. You may even run into a celebrity if you grab a drink at the Tahiti Nui, Hanalei’s oldest bar.

And it’s a special treat to drive down to Hanalei Beach . The white sand is inviting, and then you’ll be surrounded by towering waterfall-covered mountains. Take a moment to look at the mountainous landscape around you, and you might be able to make out the outline of a sleeping dragon. That’s Puff the Magic Dragon. He lives down by the sea in a town called Hanalei.

Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon

Simply take Kauai’s highway west towards the town of Waimea. Just past the Big Save grocery store, you’ll want to take a right up Waimea Canyon Drive. The road will switchback up a steep hillside to give you breathtaking views of the town below, and, for some reason, the ocean looks even bluer here on the west coast.

Fight the urge to stop for a picture on these switchbacks because the views are about to get a lot more beautiful. if you can believe it. The road will finally get to the top of the hill, and you’ll drive alongside a cascading waterfall carved into the tiered red dirt.

There will be one intersection. Make sure to stay right to keep climbing in elevation. Soon, the canyon will begin to emerge on your right. Continue to fight the urge to stop. The big viewpoints are just up ahead.

There are two main viewpoints on the Waimea Canyon Road. Each viewpoint has a parking lot and facilities. You’ll also find plenty of tourists at each location, but this shouldn’t dissuade you from making a pit stop.

The canyon is absolutely breathtaking. Your mind has a difficult time understanding the depths of this phenomenon. It almost looks fake. And the colors of the canyon really pop. Stark red dirt sits in contrast to the lush greens of trees and bushes. Minerals burst through the ground to give the canyon oranges and purples, as well. And off in the distance, waterfalls pour hundreds of feet into oblivion.

Keep driving up Waimea Canyon Road to find the second well-signposted viewpoint. Along the way, the canyon will continue to reveal itself. At times, you’ll be driving right on the edge of the canyon itself, but fight the urge to stop the car to have a look. Always pull off to the side of the road responsibly and then peer into the canyon on foot.

Kalalau Valley Lookout

Kalalau Valley Lookout

There are three ways to get to the valley. First, you can take a boat, but the valley’s beach is often violent as there is no protective reef or bay. Second, you can take a helicopter down to the valley floor, but the helipad is usually reserved for rescues and law enforcement. Lastly, and most commonly, you can hike to the valley. The trailhead can be found 11 miles north of Kalalau Valley at Ke’e Beach . Hikers must ascend and descend each and every cathedral cliff of the coast and traverse “crawler’s ledge” to enter this beautiful and remote valley.

From a distance, the Na Pali Coast looks like the massive talons of an island-sized dragon, and each of the talons reaches out into the ocean to create these cathedral cliffs. The cliffs create valleys, and the cliffs themselves are covered in crags, vegetation, and waterfalls.

But there’s good news -- you don’t have to boat, helicopter or hike to the valley to see its beauty. You can drive to the Kalalau Lookout at the very end of the Waimea Canyon Road.

The drive will take you past Waimea Canyon and through a small “town” known as Kokee. At 3,000 feet of elevation, Kokee can be chilly, so you might want to pack something warm to wear. Kokee is essentially a restaurant, open fields, tent camping sites and a collection of cabins. And the cabins can be reserved on the cheap with a two-night minimum stay.

Feel free to stop in Kokee to smell the abundant yellow ginger that wafts on the air. Continue your drive out of Kokee up more switchbacks. The road will narrow, and you’ll finally get to a sign that says Kalalau Valley Lookout near an observatory. Ignore this first lookout. Continue to drive.

Drive until the road completely ends. There will be no signs, but this is the bigger and better Kalalau Valley Lookout. You’ll walk up a small hill to a concrete lookout with railings, but the real thrill and the real views are on the valley’s edge. Just take extreme caution when walking up to the edge of the valley. It’s thousands of feet to the floor below.

Colors seem to be more vibrant in the valley. The blues are electric, the greens seem to glow and the red dirt looks like it’s been painted with a brush. The craggy valley walls are massive, the beach is a slash of white and the ocean shimmers in the distance. This, right here, could be the most impressive lookout in all of Hawaii. Just make sure to drive up here when it’s clear. You won’t be able to see 3,000 feet to the valley floor if there’s fog.

Polihale Beach

Polihale Beach

Take Kauai’s main highway south out of Lihue, do not turn down the Hall of Trees and stay on the road as it bends to the west. Stop in the town of Waimea at the Ishihara Market. Walk to the back of the market where you’ll find a deli and the island’s most delicious poke. You’ll have your choice as the deli preps a variety of poke daily, and you can’t go wrong. Order up some fresh seafood and save it for the beach.

Continue on the highway west out of town. The road will hug the ocean before turning back north along the west coast. Eventually, the road will run out of pavement and you’ll have to drive on a washboard dirt road for a few miles. Take it slow. Your rental car should make it.

The dirt road will run alongside massive open farm fields with impossibly green crops. Off in the distance, you’ll begin to make out the southernmost cathedral cliff of the Na Pali Coast. Just behind that cliff sits the most beautiful place in all of Hawaii -- Kalalau Valley.

Keep driving on the dirt road until you come upon a massive monkeypod tree. It’s the first giant tree you’ll encounter here on the dry west coast. Under its canopy is a sign welcoming you to Polihale Beach Park. From here, you have two choices.

You can drive up the sandy hill to the beach park’s first pavilion, or you can continue down the dirt road where road conditions get worse. You’ll find more pullouts down the dirt road with each leading to another covered pavilion. These pavilions can be reserved and rented for the night.

The pavilions sit on hills that overlook the beach. You’ll have to climb down a steep dune to the water, and you may notice some tire tracks on the sand. You’re legally allowed to drive four-wheel-drive vehicles on the beach. If you’ve rented a 4WD vehicle, then let a little air out of your tires before hitting the sand. Full tires may spin in the soft white sand without traction.

The water here is crystal clear and the waves are huge. Look carefully into the oncoming waves to see dolphins, turtles and monk seals riding the surf. And this beach is absolutely perfect for whale watching between the months of January and March. You might even be lucky enough to see a rare instance of interspecies play where spinner dolphins swim onto the snouts of humpback whales only to be thrown into the air. And spinner dolphins always spin like footballs out of the water.

Take extreme caution when swimming at Polihale. There are no lifeguards, you’re miles from the nearest town and the surf can be violent. Carefully watch the waves before getting in. You may notice that they are breaking sideways into each other. This is a side current that can turn into a rip current. You can also fall victim to the undertow. It’s best to stay out of the water altogether, but, if you can’t help yourself, stay in the shallows.

Take out your poke from Ishihara Market and enjoy the sun setting over the towering island of Niihau off in the distance. Just drive back slowly. The dirt road becomes covered in nocturnal frogs after dark.

Ke’e Beach

Ke’e Beach

Take the Kuhio Highway north out of Lihue past Princeville. Descend the cliff to Hanalei Bay and drive past the town. You’ll hit another one-land bridge as the road hugs the western side of the bay.

As you leave Hanalei, you’ll enter another world. The road hugs cliff edges take you past remote beaches and all the houses out here are built on stilts. You’ll drive over a series of one-lane bridges and each takes you over yet another stream pouring into the Pacific.

There’s no mistaking the landscape here at the end of the road. You are deep in the heart of a rainforest. When the canopy breaks, you can look inland to see towering waterfall-covered mountains as the road hugs yet another white sand beach.

You’ll eventually hit a hard corner. A mountain stream will pour over the road and you’ll have to slow down to cross the water. That’s when the first north shore cave will present itself. These caves are filled with water and seemingly go on forever. It’s a haunting place to take a picture.

You’ll pass yet another cave before the landscape opens up a bit. You’ll be shocked to find a farm so far away from civilization, but that farm is telling you that you’re close to the end of the road. The road will then dip under the canopy of a thick rainforest before ending at Ke’e Beach .

There is a small parking lot here at the end of the road, and you’ll want to get here early in the morning to secure a spot. On the southern side of the parking lot, you’ll see the trailhead to Kalalau Valley which sits 11 miles down the coast. Continue walking towards the lifeguard tower to the beach, and the beach is absolutely stunning.

The jungle seems to crawl right out into the ocean here at Ke’e Beach. Feral chickens peck at fallen coconuts with their chicks right on the sand. And the beach is pressed up against a massive cathedral cliff. That cliff side gives a sunset picture from Ke’e Beach some impressive scale.

There’s a protective reef about 75 yards into the water, but the ocean can get up and over the reef when the surf is violent. If the water is calm, snorkel out to the reef to see an abundance of tropical fish.

If you’re feeling up to it, like the first mile of the Kalalau Trail. You’ll ascend the first cathedral cliff of the Na Pali Coast. At the top of the cliff, you’ll be able to see down the indomitable coast to make out each and every cathedral cliff. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, and it’s the best way to see the Na Pali Coast on land. You’ll also get beautiful views of Ke’e Beach below.

The Self-Guided Tour: The Kauai Coffee Journey from Seed to Cup

Begin your visit with our self-guided walking tour. Stroll at your leisure through rows of coffee trees, where the deep green coffee trees frame brilliant coffee blossoms or brightly colored cherries, depending on the time of year. Coffee is an annual crop, which means what you see on the trees will vary with the time of year you visit.

Coffee blooms burst onto the branches in the springtime, with the first buds appearing anywhere from late February to early April, depending on the amount of rain received over the winter months. Coffee flowers are self-pollinating and fleeting, lasting only a few days before they give way to the coffee fruit. Coffee is harvested during the fall, so summertime visits are great for seeing green and ripe cherries on the trees.

No matter what time of year you find yourself on the self-guided tour path, informative signage unveils the journey our beans take from seed to your cup. From nurturing the soil and growing seedlings into trees to harvest and processing, a self-guided tour is a free and relaxing way to learn how coffee gets from the orchard to your cup while soaking in the natural beauty of our estate.

Five days on Kauai: North Shore vs. South Shore, and the view from a doors-off helicopter tour

Exploring Kauai

View of Kauai's spectacular Napali coast, as seen from a doors-off helicopter tour. Susan Glaser, Cleveland.com

  • Susan Glaser, cleveland.com

PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii – Staring straight down to the water from the open door of the helicopter, I could barely make out the Kalalau Trail, an 11-mile path that winds along Kauai’s magnificent Napali Coast.

It’s considered one of the most difficult trails in the world, and the day before, my husband and I had exhausted ourselves on a short, relatively easy section of the path.

I said to my husband as we hiked, “Those helicopters are kind of annoying.”

The very next day I was in one, marveling at the view.

Forgive me, hikers, for I understand your irritation.

Then again, there is perhaps no better way to fully appreciate the beauty of this island than from the seat of a chopper 3,000 feet above sea level, offering views of the eye-popping terrain that no road nor trail can access.

The helicopter tour and the hike were among the highlights of a recent five-day stay on Kauai, the final stop on my two-week visit to the state. Other top experiences included beaching, snorkeling and a delightful concoction called Hula Pie, a mile-high piece of ice cream perfection.

Kauai is the smallest of Hawaii’s four major islands – just 25 miles by 33 miles, with much of the rugged interior inaccessible.

And it has a population of just 73,450 – smaller than the Cleveland suburb of Parma.

But what it lacks in size it makes up for in exquisite beauty. From beach to mountain to stunning waterfall, there’s one eye-popping scene after another around nearly every bend in the road.

Speaking of roads -- there’s basically one main roadway that travels around the island (but not all the way around; the northwest quadrant is essentially inaccessible). So there’s no avoiding road-construction delays.

During the short drive from Lihue Airport to Princeville, for example, my husband and I were stopped by construction that brought traffic to a complete standstill three times in 30 miles.

And the wild chickens, which are omnipresent throughout the island, can be obnoxiously noisy at 4 a.m.

Ah well. If the place were perfect, it wouldn’t seem real. And it almost doesn’t.

Exploring the North Shore

To cut down on driving, my husband and I split our nights between the island’s rugged North Shore, home to Princeville, Hanalei Bay and the incredible Napali Coast; and the South Shore, with milder weather, calmer beaches and access to spectacular Waimea Canyon.

The east shore connects the two regions and is home to the airport as well as the island’s biggest towns and commercial centers.

We flew from Kona to Lihue ($94.50 one way on Hawaiian Airlines), picked up our rental car and headed north to Princeville, a 11,000-acre golf resort and residential development that makes a convenient jumping-off point for the rest of the North Shore.

After dropping off our bags at our condo, we headed to Hanalei Beach, a stunning stretch of sand, easily one of the most beautiful in all of Hawaii, 2 miles long and with the emerald peaks of the Napali Coast as a backdrop.

The surf was high here, so I didn’t get wet past my knees. But I walked the length of the sand and out onto the historic, 340-foot-long pier, stopping often to admire surfers trying to catch the perfect wave.

We went to bed early that night to ensure we were rested for our hike the next day.

To be honest, I was intimidated by the Kalalau Trail, which is frequently included on lists of the world’s most difficult hikes (See, for example, “How the Kalalau Trail became one of the most dangerous hikes in America,” published this month by Backpacker magazine .)

The path, 11 miles one way, hugs Kauai’s north coast and features steep drop-offs, requires rock scrambling, crossing streams and is particularly treacherous when wet.

Turns out, the first couple of miles on the trail aren’t all that tough – moderately difficult is how I would describe it, at least on the sunny and dry day we hiked. And it was absolutely worth the effort – up and down, across rocks and creeks, but drop-dead gorgeous, with stunning views of the water and the jagged coastline. Don’t miss it.

Almost as difficult as the hike is the process you need to go through to access it.

Day hikers are permitted to hike the first 2 miles of the trail (with another 2 additional miles on a spur up to Hanakapiai Falls). To go farther, hikers need a camping permit, available 90 days ahead (see camping.ehawaii.gov ).

The trailhead is located in Haena State Park, at the end of Highway 560 on the north shore. Because of parking limitations, the state has severely restricted access to the park in recent years.

To access the park, visitors either must reserve a parking spot 30 days in advance or buy a $40 seat on a shuttle. I tried for a parking pass – rising at 4:45 a.m. 30 days before my visit, to access the parking reservation site at exactly midnight Hawaii time (which was 5 a.m. in Cleveland in January). Alas, parking passes are sold out nearly instantaneously, and I didn’t get one. (Note: Passes are available for three separate time periods: 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to sunset; all three typically sell out in minutes.)

I ended up buying two seats on the shuttle, which offers round-trip service to the park every 20 minutes from a parking area near Hanalei Beach. I was a little worried about the reliability of the shuttle, but it was a well-oiled machine.

In addition to the Kalalau Trail, Haena State Park is home to Kee Beach, a lovely stretch of sand that is also a popular snorkeling site.

After the hike, my husband and I shed our hiking boots and collapsed on the sand for an hour, listening to the waves roll in.

We shared the sand with an endangered Hawaiian monk seal, which looked nearly as zonked as we were.

On the South Shore

The next day, we relocated from Princeville to Poipu on the southern coast.

In the winter, the southern coast is typically warmer and less windy than the northern coast, with safer swimming conditions.

On our way into town, we stopped at Snorkel Bob’s , where I picked up some rental snorkeling gear ($12 for 24 hours). Poipu Beach is known for its terrific snorkeling conditions right from shore – and after being shut out of snorkeling on Maui (the surf was too rough), I wasn’t going to miss this.

Shortly after arrival, I grabbed my gear and headed to the water, about a 10-minute walk from our condo. Among the underwater delights: A rainbow-hued assortment of tang, butterfly fish, surgeonfish, unicornfish and wrasse – a true feast for the eyes.

In recent years, Poipu Beach also has become well-known for the large number of Hawaiian sea turtles that gather on the sand every evening.

On the afternoon of my visit, a volunteer with nonprofit Malama na Honu (“Protect the Turtles”) had erected some signage and roping around the animals and was answering questions about the endangered creatures, which can weigh as much as 350 pounds and grow to be as old as 100.

“We call these happy-hour turtles,” the volunteer said, because they show up every evening about 6:30 p.m. It’s unclear why Poipu is their chosen strand, with numerous other lovely beaches nearby.

I even saw one underwater, shrieking in delight through my snorkel as it swam by me.

Waimea Canyon

The South Shore also provides access to Waimea Canyon, the gorgeous ravine carved through the island’s interior.

Often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea was formed over millions of years by ancient lava flows, earthquakes and erosion. It’s a mile wide, 3,600 feet deep and about 14 miles long.

Two side-by-side state parks, Waimea Canyon and Kokee , provide access to the rugged terrain.

A single roadway, Highway 550, provides access to both parks from the town of Waimea on the South Shore. The roadway travels 14 miles north before dead-ending at two spectacular overlooks, the Kalalau Lookout and, in good weather, the Puu O Kia Lookout, with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Napali Coast.

Additional overlooks are located along the way, providing gorgeous views of the canyon. A couple dozen trails wind their way here, too, some short and easy and others long and challenging.

My husband and I set out on the 3.6-mile Canyon Trail, which promises terrific views, but we turned around part way because the path was wet and slippery and I didn’t want to work that hard. We headed for lunch at the Kokee Lodge instead.

Adjacent to the lodge is the small Kokee Natural History Museum, with exhibits on the geologic history of the island, flora, fauna and other topics.

Note: $5 per person admission, plus $10 for parking, gets you into both state parks.

One more suggestion: The canyon is best viewed on a clear day but is often shrouded in clouds. We rearranged our itinerary to come when the weather forecast was most promising – and we were rewarded with spectacular views.

The view from above

But perhaps to best way to get the fullest sense of Kauai’s wonders is to take a helicopter tour of the island.

Yes, they’re pricey. Yes, they’re noisy.

But wow – they’re amazing.

As much of 70% of the island is inaccessible, said Chris “Kalena” Kim, who piloted the MD 500E chopper that I traveled in. He showed us a lot of it.

The helicopter holds four passengers, in addition to the pilot – me and my husband, along with a couple from California. My husband and I sat in the backseat – with no doors restricting our views. The ride was extremely windy, chilly and slightly terrifying – but thrilling.

We booked with Jack Harter Helicopters , where a 60-minute doors-off tour runs $324 per person. It was the single biggest splurge of our two-week trip to Hawaii, but worth it. One note: We didn’t know until the day before our tour whether it was a go because of weight conditions that must be met for every ride.

We took off from Lihue Airport and traveled clockwise around the island, heading west along the South Shore before turning inland toward Waimea Canyon.

Along the way, Kim offered commentary about what we were seeing, pointing out Manawaiopuna Falls, better known as Jurassic Falls, featured in several scenes of the 1993 Steven Spielberg film, and Honopu Beach, where “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” was filmed in 2011.

We flew over a Carnival cruise ship docked in Lihue that day, Poipu Beach and Hanalei Bay.

And we circled Mount Waialeale, elevation 5,148 feet, the second highest point on Kauai, and one of the wettest spots on earth, with an average 420 inches of annual rainfall.

The rainfall produces what’s called the Wall of Tears, or the Weeping Wall – a series of narrow waterfalls cascading thousands of feet to the valley below.

Kim also lingered above the Napali Coast, where the late afternoon sun created a colorful scene. This was picture-perfect Kauai, with turquoise water juxtaposed against orange-red rock and verdant valleys – all linked together by one spectacular hiking trail far below.

I couldn’t make out any hikers, but I knew they were there. I silently apologized for the noise as I looked down in awe.

If you go: Kauai

Other highlights of our visit:

* The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail is a terrific 2-mile (one-way) easy trail along the South Shore coast, starting at Shipwrecks Beach and traveling east toward Mahaulepu Beach, past rocky outcrops, beaches and the Poipu Bay Golf Course.

* Spouting Horn Beach Park features a blowhole in the lava rock west of Poipu, which launches ocean water up to 50 feet in the air.

* Waipa Farmers Market, just west of Hanelai, offers a variety of local crafts and foods every Tuesday from 2 p.m. to dusk. I sampled a couple of new-to-me fruits, including apple bananas and longan, native to tropical Asia and which taste a bit like cantaloupe.

* Souvenirs and free samples at Kauai Coffee Co ., which, with 3,100 acres on the South Shore, is the largest coffee farm in the United States.

* Macadamia nut ice cream at Lappert’s and a giant piece of Hula Pie at Duke’s Kauai , where we lingered on our last night in Hawaii. The restaurant, overlooking Kalapaki Beach on the southeast corner of Kauai, is a five-minute drive to Lihue Airport, where we were catching an overnight flight back to the mainland.

Where we stayed: In Princeville, we stayed two nights at Club Wyndham Bali Hai Villas, a timeshare property that also rents units like a hotel. We got a steal through an organization called Live Suites that rents timeshare units, and paid less than $200 per night.

In Poipu, we spent two nights in a one-bedroom condo at Poipu Plantation Vacation Rentals, a short walk from Poipu Beach. This was the most expensive rental of our two-week stay, about $450 per night, including cleaning fees. Information: poipubeach.com

Kaipu

Kaipu was the early cook for G.N. Wilcox and his brother Sam at Grove Farm and lived in what then was known as the Chinese camp. He was boss of the Chinese laborers and cooked for them in the camp, which G.N. later named for Kaipu. Originally from southern China, Kaipu was the name given to him by the Hawaiians since no one knew his Chinese name.

Kauai's Hindu Monastery

A Spiritual Sanctuary on Hawaii's Garden Island

Iraivan Temple

kauai virtual tour

This is the crown jewel of Kauai’s Hindu Monastery, being constructed first and foremost as a destination for devotees on annual pilgrimage. Hindus revere a sanctified edifice like Iraivan not only as a temple, but as the very body of God. Iraivan is an ancient Tamil word for God, meaning “He who is worshiped.” This temple was inspired by a series of mystical visions of Siva that came to Gurudeva early in the morning of February 15, 1975, in which he saw Lord Siva seated on a large boulder that was later discovered on the then overgrown property. These visions inspired him to begin this exquisite temple, unlike any in the world. Since that day, pujas have been held daily at that swayambhu (self-created) Lingam (mark of God), which will one day be sheltered within an elegant open-air pavilion.

Iraivan Temple’s Pillars

Gurudeva decreed that the temple be “a library in stone,” and had 24 of the pillars carved with sacred and cultural symbols. At the bottom are 24 of the traditional forms of God Siva. In the middle are depicted cultural and philosophical images. The top of each pillar has sacred symbols and plants, half from India and half from Hawaii. The pillars have much to teach about our spiritual tradition. Visit our web app, “ The Pillars of Iraivan ” to learn of the mystical symbolism carved upon each one.

To attend worship at Kadavul Hindu Temple make a reservation here FRONT GROUNDS ARE OPEN DAILY FROM 9AM to 12PM WITHOUT A RESERVATION

Kauai's Hindu Monastery

Plan your visit, visiting hours.

(Entry to our small monastery Kadavul Temple building itself is only for personal worship/meditation, and is now by reservation. You may reserve to attend our 9am Siva puja, or more brief entry at 11am. Please visit our reservations page for a reservation.

The front outdoor grounds of the monastery up to the river lookout and archway is open to freely visit from 9 to noon. All are welcome to meditate under the awesome banyan tree, explore the large information panels in the Banyan Mandapam which tell about our monastery and the Hindu religion, and browse through the many publications and Hindu religious supplies in our Mini-Mela visitor center. A self-guided tour is available for this area. Download the map or pick it up along with an accompanying booklet at the entrance which gives you a basic introduction to the monastery and its areas of service.

Inside Kadavul Temple, guests should ideally sit cross-legged, but never with legs stretched out towards the Deity. No video or photography is allowed of the inside of the temple. If you are not sure how a temple functions or what "puja" is, learn more. You can also watch the first ten-ish minutes and last ten-ish minutes of this video to get a sense of puja.

If you are a Hindu planning to visit on one morning or for a longer pilgrimage, please read our additional guidelines here .

If you are a passenger on a cruise that is docking at Nawiliwili, Kauai's ocean port, please read our additional guidelines here .

Guests are encouraged to dress in traditional Hindu clothing when visiting. Alternatively, elegant clothing is permitted. No shorts, short dresses, tight-fitting yoga pants, t-shirts or tank tops. Polo shirts and long shorts that cover the knees are okay.

Some Other Important Guidelines

  • Video and photography of the inside of Kadavul Temple is not permitted. All other areas may be photographed.
  • We ask visitors to bring an umbrella as it rains often here.
  • It is always prudent, even in paradise, not to leave valuables in your car.
  • Please note, we do not provide meals at the monastery. You are welcome to use our local Kauai Dining Guide to help plan your meals while on pilgrimage.
  • For sizeable groups planning a visit, please email here to coordinate your visit.
