West Virginia Scenic Train Rides (2024) : A Complete Guide

Last revised: December 10, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

Aside from the popular Cass Scenic Railroad, West Virginia's rail attractions remain largely unknown.  This is unfortunate given the state's rich history and available options.

But, things are changing.  The West Virginia Central, based in Elkins, has steadily grown into a popular tourism destination.

Today, the company hosts several different trips, ranging from dinner trains to holiday themes; other locations include the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley in rural Durbin (hosting short excursions pulled by a restored Climax geared steam locomotive) and the Potomac Eagle Scenic at Romney.

West Virginia's heritage with the iron horse began as the Baltimore & Ohio pushed ever westward from its home city.

Many railroads would eventually reach the Mountain State, which once boasted five main lines and numerous coal branches; these included the Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, Virginian, Western Maryland, and the Norfolk & Western.

State Rail History

Before June 20, 1863 West Virginia was a component of Virginia.  As such, its rail history is somewhat tied to the Cavalier State whose first was the Petersburg Railroad.

This pioneer road was chartered in 1830 to connect its home city, near the Atlantic coast, with southern points.

The first system to penetrate the border of what is today West Virginia was the venerable Baltimore & Ohio, our nation's first common-carrier.

After the B&O launched service over its initial 1.5 miles from a small station in Baltimore at Pratt Street during January, 1830, the railroad set out westward for Wheeling, Virginia to complete its original charter.

This growing western frontier community sat along an important waterway, the Ohio River, and the National Road, America's first major highway that was completed from Cumberland to St. Louis, Missouri in 1837, a distance of 620 miles.

As the 1830's progressed the B&O continued west, reaching Frederick in 1831 (via a branch) and Harpers Ferry, Virginia in January, 1837 (following a completion of a bridge spanning the Potomac River).

The railroad's attempt to complete its charter proved agonizingly slow due to funding issues and engineers' struggle to locate a suitable grade through the rugged Appalachian Mountains.

Under the new direction of Thomas Swann, the railroad headed southwestward from Cumberland until reaching the small community of Bridge Valley (later Grafton).

From there, the route turned slightly northwesterly along the Tygart Valley River to Fairmont.  Finally, Wheeling was reached in 1852.

By the 20th century, the B&O dominated northern West Virginia; it would open a main line to St. Louis via Parkersburg and operated hundreds of miles of secondary coal branches throughout the region.

It was joined by the Western Maryland Railway (WM) which headed south from Cumberland to Elkins, a town which blossomed into a major WM coal terminus.

There was also the C&O, Virginian, and N&W serving rich coal seams in the state's southern periphery.  Historian John Stover's book, " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads , " notes the state's mileage peaked at 3,996 in 1920.

Today, the Association of American Railroads lists only 2,214 miles remaining, following the abandonment of coal branches and components of other through routes.

West Virginia's history with modern-day tourist railroads began in the early 1960's when the Cass Scenic Railroad opened to the public over tracks that had long been used for logging purposes.

The seeds of which became Cass Scenic were planted by Russell Baum in 1960, a local railfan from Sunbury, Pennsylvania.

He had a longtime interest in the old logging operation and wished to see it preserved for future generations.  It took a few years but he was eventually successful in convincing the state to acquire the property as a state park.

The new Cass Scenic Railroad, which began as just a novelty, launched service on June 15, 1963.

Today, the state is home to four excursions and all offer something a little different, from dining aboard the West Virginia Central and Potomac Eagle Scenic to open-air cars on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley.

To learn more about all West Virginia's scenic train rides please read on below.

Finally, if you are interested in excursions that pertain to specific events, such as "The Polar Express," Halloween, Thomas the Tank Engine excursions, or fall foliage events please visit the  main tourist trains section of this website .

  • Cass Scenic Railroad

Without question, Cass Scenic is the most popular train ride experience in the Mountain State.  It officially debuted on June 15, 1963 via a few miles of former Mower Lumber Company logging trackage in Pocahontas County.

Today, the railroad operates a fleet of geared steam locomotives and has rebuilt more than a dozen miles of track reaching Bald Knob and the former town of Spruce where it connects with the West Virginia Central.  To plan a trip please  click here .

  • Harpers Ferry Toy Train Museum & Joy Line Railroad

Located in the historic town of Harpers Ferry at 937 Bakerton Road this museum is well-known for its large collection of classic toy trains that date back to the 1930's, and some even earlier.

They also offer a popular miniature train ride on the grounds.  While there be sure and check out the live railroad action of passing CSX, Amtrak, and MARC commuter trains.

  • Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad

The little Durbin & Greenbrier Valley, sometimes forgotten because of its small size and out-of-the-way location, uses a short section of the Chesapeake & Ohio's former Greenbrier Branch to host train rides south of Durbin (where the railroad once connected with the Western Maryland).

From the town's restored C&O depot, the D&GV operates a restored Climax geared steam locomotive.  The little railroad is working hard to reestablish a connection with the nearby Cass Scenic Railroad.

  • Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum

This toy train museum is based in another historic West Virginia city, Wheeling, once an important terminal for the B&O.  They house a large collection of different gauges from O and G to HO, as well as operating layout to see.  To learn more please  visit their website .

  • Autumn Colors Express (Formerly The "New River Train" Excursions)

The Autumn Colors Express replaced the New River Train in 2019, an annual tradition offered by the Collis P. Huntington Historical Society for several decades.

Today, the excursion is hosted by the Rail Excursion Management Company.  Years ago the trips were occasionally pulled by steam steams but today only Amtrak's diesels do the job.

Trains will pass through the state's beautiful New River Gorge during the peak fall foliage season and a popular treat each season.  To learn more please visit the train's website .

  • Railroading In The Mountain State

Scenic train rides in WV are defined by their bucolic, rural settings and magnificent views of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains.

This has held true since our country's first common-carrier, the Baltimore & Ohio, arrived in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (West Virginia after June 20, 1863) in 1837.

The B&O was the primary service provider throughout the state's northern counties while the southern/eastern regions were covered by the Western Maryland, Chesapeake & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, and Virginian Railway.

Excursion possibilities are provided primarily through John and Kathy Smith's Durbin & Greenbrier Valley enterprise; it began with a short component of the Chesapeake & Ohio's Greenbrier Branch which hosted short trips behind a restored Climax geared steam locomotive.

Today, this WV train ride attraction is still available, which departs from the preserved C&O depot in Durbin!

The Smiths also operate the popular West Virginia Central in Elkins as well as the nationally recognized Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass.

Also be sure and catch a ride on the Potomac Eagle Scenic in the state's Eastern Panhandle, long regarded for numerous sightings of Bald Eagles along the South Branch of the Potomac River.

  • Oglebay Good Zoo

This zoo is located at Wheeling's historic and well-known Oglebay Park & Resort.  On the grounds they have an impressive, 1,200 square-foot O-gauge layout to peruse.  Be sure and check it out if you're there!  To learn more please  visit their website .

  • Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

Among the handful of West Virginia's scenic train rides available, the Potomac Eagle Scenic is the only located within the state's Eastern Panhandle.

It utilizes a branch line originally owned by the Baltimore & Ohio.

It meanders along the South Branch Potomac River with surprisingly incredible scenery within the state's less rugged regions. The tourist line is best known for its regular sightings of Bald Eagles. To learn more please visit their website .

  • West Virginia Central Railroad

The WVC has established itself as one of the premier WV train rides.

While its official name is often unknown by the general public it operates former branch lines of the historic Western Maryland Railway which radiated south, east, and west from Elkins into the Mountain State's rugged hills.

The company is located in the town's restored WM depot and now offers a wide range of trips from short excursions to dinner trains.  One can now also even reach Cass Scenic by rail!  To learn more please visit their website .

These Scenic Train Trips Through West Virginia Have Spectacular Mountain Views and Fine Dining on the Rails

West Virginia is a haven for scenic train rides — and one travel writer sampled the steam trains on offer to find the best trips.

Mark Orwoll, a former international editor of Travel + Leisure , has traveled to more than 70 countries and written about most of them. His byline has appeared more than 1,500 times in T+L . Now a freelance writer, he contributes travel articles to top-name outlets.

Mark Orwoll/Travel + Leisure

I’ve been looking forward to a glass of wine in an elegant train car. I’ve even brought along a bottle of wine in my knapsack, just in case you have to bring your own. Unfortunately, at the last minute, I discover that West Virginia's Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad serves no alcohol on its cocktail-hour excursion. Not even BYOB.

Departing from Romney , West Virginia’s oldest town, the Potomac Eagle gets its name from its route along the South Branch of the Potomac River and the abundance of eagles there. That’s especially true in the high-walled, thickly forested canyon called the Trough, so named by George Washington on a 1748 surveying expedition. I'm on the Sunset Trough trip , a three-hour ride that, according to my research, offers "eagle sightings in a soft canyon glow."

The train has two engines, one at either end. Pulling us on the first leg of the journey through West Virginia's Trough Canyon is the Potomac Eagle 8250, an ungainly-looking, hard-working diesel road switcher built in 1955 for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Hauling us home on the opposite end is the powerful, photogenic 1755, which was used as a prop in the 2023 Tom Hanks film "A Man Called Otto." On both trains are coaches, dining cars, and even an open-air gondola, or what railroaders simply call a "gon," for those who want a wide view of the Trough and its eagles.

Mark Orwoll/Travel + Leisure

Meal service begins shortly after our 5 p.m. departure. Based on ticket class (and price), the food ranges from snack-bar items to a four-course dinner prepared on the train. The railroad has new owners, who are not only angling for an alcohol license (expected soon), but have invested heavily in the onboard cuisine.

“We do all the food preparation and cooking right here on the train,” says Gretta Ramsey, the line’s food and beverage manager, “which is important if you want to present a high level of meals. We’ve been able to upgrade the menu with more choices, more local food items, and in general, higher-quality ingredients.”

At a brief stop just before entering the Trough, guests can leave their assigned cars and move to the open gon. But with rain threatening, not everyone wants to. Too bad, because no sooner do we enter the Trough than an eagle dive-bombs from high above us to inches over the water’s surface. Another eagle does an Icarus over the canyon until it’s out of sight. Two eaglet siblings, barely fledged, cautiously pump their wings above the river, then return to their nest.

We’re lucky to have Robert “BJ” Lefever on this train. Lefever is an eagle spotter. He knows their nests, predation patterns, and how to find them in treetops, even surrounded by hundreds of identical treetops. Standing in the open gon, he shouts out the location of each bird so loudly that his voice often cracks. In less than five minutes in the Trough, we sight six eagles, with more to come. And Lefever is always the first to spot them.

“They call me ‘eagle-eye’ around here,” he says with a laugh.

The next day, I sampled a different scenic train of West Virginia. In the tiny town of Cass, 110 miles from Romney, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is holding its annual Parade of Steam when I arrive. The railroad rolls out all five of its Shay steam locomotives, tooting their whistles, chuffing black coal smoke, and fuming chutes of white steam through its piston valves and exhaust ports. The Parade of Steam is a veritable Miss America pageant of the Iron Horse.

The scene, when I arrive, is heart-stopping in its magnificence. These locomotives, weighing between 40 and 154 tons, are formidable beasts, loud and oily and reeking of burnt coal. Ash and embers fly through the air, leaving the bystanders blinking and rubbing their eyes. Engine grease soils the tracks. The noise is ungodly, ear-splitting. Water drips from the undersides of the locomotive boilers, leaving muddy paths alongside the wheels.  It is, in other words, spectacular.

Watching it all is visitor Patrick Tabor, a miner in a rock quarry near Roanoke, Virginia, three hours away.

“I’ve always been a railfan,” he tells me. He’s booked on two rides this weekend. “I grew up where there’s lots of railroad history. I especially like the steam trains.”

Another visitor, Nathan Watson, was originally from Cass, so he’s familiar with the steam locomotives and their sorrowful whistles resounding among the valleys.

“My grandpa was a brakeman here,” he says, “and lived across the river. I used to bum rides on the trains when I was a kid. I just love ’em.”

The railroad started in 1901 to carry timber down from the mountains to the Cass mill built by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. The grades are steep, as much as 9 percent, so the company used Shay locomotives, a revolutionary design that relies on geared wheels and which improves the traction. The lumber and mill business ended in 1960, and West Virginia’s state park system bought the rolling stock, engines, and right of way soon after. Tourist excursions began in 1963.

At the ticket office, a sign above the guichet says, “Special Rides Today.” When I inquire, the woman behind the grillwork says they have hour-long steam-driven rides in old parlor cars along the Greenbrier River, the next one leaving in 15 minutes. I unhesitatingly pay 30 bucks and quickly find passenger car 3607 on the train, make my way to my assigned four-person table, and take seat A, a window perch on the left side of the car.

Our train follows the Greenbrier Branch right of way of the former C&O Railroad, which back in the day would send trains to Cass to pick up milled lumber and bring it to market on the mainline. As it turns out, we are riding on a slightly abbreviated version of Cass Scenic Railroad’s newest itinerary, the Greenbrier Express , using the same cars and steam locomotives.

The Greenbrier River Valley is teeming with wildlife. Passengers may spy mergansers and mallards, deer, and even black bears. On this day, we see all those things and more, except for the bears. The shallow river, 30 feet broad, takes up most of the valley floor, leaving the train clinging to a steep hillside. The steam whistle echoes lugubriously among the slopes. Photogenic cascades froth down the sides of the hills, passing below our tracks and flowing into the river.

The rolling stock behind our locomotive includes a coal car, U.S. Mail Rail Post Office 706, West Virginia Central diner 202, Western Maryland Railroad passenger cars 3607 and 835, and Chesapeake & Ohio caboose 90658. Despite the mismatched cars, it is one hell of a handsome train.

The next day, I find myself again in Cass. I’ll stay overnight in one of the former Cass Company houses , built for the mill and railroad workers in the early 1900s and now available for rent. But at the moment, the big event is one the most scenic rail journeys in the country: the ride to Bald Knob, the third highest peak in West Virginia, on the Cass Scenic Railroad .

As we board at the Cass station, each passenger receives a plastic bag containing a “hobo lunch” (hamburger bun, cold cuts and cheese, macaroni salad, cookies, apple sauce, and bottled water). Some of the passengers dig into the chow right away, while others hang onto it, waiting until we reach Bald Knob, two hours up the mountain.

Our engine, Shay No. 11, was built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio in 1923. The Shays were designed for power and grip, not for speed. They can reach 11 mph if called upon, but average only about 6 mph on most trips.

The rolling stock on the Bald Knob excursion consists mainly of gondolas once used to carry cut trees to the mill. The state park put roofs over the cars and double-sided wooden bench seats lengthwise down the centers. Some far-thinking passengers have brought light jackets, in case the weather turns cold on the mountaintop, and which they use as seat cushions for the five-hour round-trip ride.

Our climb begins at an elevation of 2,452 feet; the summit, 11 miles away, is at 4,842 feet. Not every steam locomotive can make such a climb, especially considering the curves we have to contend with.

We come to a switch, where we reverse direction onto a new set of tracks. Our locomotive, which had been pushing us, is now pulling us. Coal smoke unexpectedly flows back into the open passenger cars. The train crew advises us to squint and look away if a cloud of smoke comes at us. Eyewash is available for anyone who needs it. Many do.

We pass three grand vistas where the tracks are higher than the treetops on the downslope side. Range after range of mountains come into view, fading from forest green to powder blue on the far horizon. The timberlands here are rich and varied: maple, oak, beech, birch, mountain ash, and the placer gold of timber, red spruce, prized by the lumber mills for its grain, strength, and beauty.

Finally, we pull into Bald Knob, two hours from Cass. Picnic tables are scattered about a vast meadow. From down in the valley, I can hear the high, lonesome whistle of another Shay, a sound at once joyous and mournful.

I take a seat by myself at one of the picnic tables and look into my day pack to see if any of my hobo lunch remains. Imagine my surprise when I open the pack and find the bottle of wine I’d bought days earlier and failed to use as a BYOB on the Potomac Eagle. I also discover a Par Mar gas station 16-ounce paper coffee cup (“Buy this size and save up to 1¢ per gallon”), which I’d picked up that morning. What are the odds?

No alcohol is allowed here or anywhere else in the state park. Yet high atop the knob, surrounded by dramatic and distant views of the wild mountains of West Virginia, I can’t resist. I open the wine, fill the coffee cup halfway, and raise a surreptitious toast to railroads everywhere, the older the better.

Scenic Rail Adventures in West Virginia

west virginia train trip

There's nothing quite as relaxing as a train trip. You have time to take in all the scenery without worrying about traffic and road hazards. If your travels take you to West Virginia , you can choose from four different scenic railroad adventures.

Cass Scenic Railroad

The Cass Scenic Railroad began as a logging train, part of the West Virginia's early 20th-century lumber industry. The Shay locomotives that pull the Cass Scenic Railroad train today used to haul logs and finished lumber along remote rail lines. Today, you can ride the rails from Cass to Bald Knob, a four and one-half hour round trip from Cass. The train has both open-air and enclosed cars. A "hobo lunch" is included with your train fare.

According to G. Fred Bartels, Trainmaster, the train can accommodate up to four wheelchair users per trip. One coach has a wheelchair lift that is able to transfer most wheelchairs. Mobility opportunities at Whittaker station, Bald Knob and Spruce stations may be limited; please call ahead for details and planning assistance.

Trains run on Saturdays in May and all the days of Memorial Day weekend. In June, July, and most of August, trains run Tuesday through Sunday. In late August through mid-September, trains run Friday through Sunday. During fall foliage season (mid-September through late October), trains run Tuesday through Sunday. Ticket prices vary by season. Book early!

A shorter trip from Cass to Whittaker Station is also available; this trip runs on a more limited schedule. Fares to Whittaker Station do not include lunch; you may buy food from the Whittaker Station concession stand or bring a snack to eat during your layover at Whittaker.

Cass is about four hours by car from Pittsburgh and five hours' drive from Washington, DC. If that's too far to drive round-trip in one day, you can spend the night in a "company house," formerly the residence of a lumber mill employee, in a wilderness cabin or in a caboose.

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad takes its name from the bald eagles passengers typically see in "The Trough," a steep-sided valley through which flows the South Branch of the Potomac River. The Potomac Eagle's Wappocomo Station, the point of departure for all trains, is in Romney, about two and one-half hours by car from Washington, DC, and three hours' drive from Pittsburgh. The Potomac Eagle train is pulled by General Motors locomotives that were built in the late 1940s and 1950s. You can sit in open-air or traditional rail cars. There is a concession stand onboard the train, or you can bring your own snacks aboard in a small cooler that does not have wheels. Most trips are three and one-half hours long, but the Potomac Eagle also makes all-day trips.

The Potomac Eagle runs Saturdays May through September, daily during October, and for weekend trips in early November. Ticket prices vary by season and length of trip. Club car fares include a meal.

One train car is a retrofitted combine car (half baggage, half passenger) with 16 seats, accessible restrooms and a sliding door wide enough to accommodate a scooter, according to Potomac Eagle Vice President Dan Snyder. Wheelchair users can also take advantage of the train's airplane-size folding wheelchair to transfer to their own wheelchairs, which they can station at a table in one of the other train cars. It's best to call the reservations office in advance, particularly in October, when the train is 16 cars long, so staffers can respot the train to ensure easy access.

Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad

The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad offers four different scenic railroad excursions. Most depart from Elkins, but the Durbin Rocket, pulled by a Climax-geared steam locomotive originally used on logging trains, leaves from Durbin, and the Cheat Mountain Salamander offers round-trip departures from both Elkins and Cheat Bridge. The New Tygart Flyer and the Mountain Explorer Dinner Train leave from Elkins. You can even stay overnight in the "Castaway Caboose," which is towed by the Durbin Rocket and left overnight in a riverside campsite.

Trip lengths vary from two to nine hours. Most trains operate on weekends from May through September and add at least some weekday departures during October. The Mountain Explorer Dinner Train has a very limited schedule. Tickets for some excursions include a sandwich buffet, and ticket prices vary by trip and season. Advance reservations are highly recommended.

According to Durbin & Greenbrier Railroad spokeswoman Amanda Swecker, "The Durbin Rocket is wheelchair accessible," but, she adds, some of the other historic trains are not. Please call the railroad for accessibility information.

New River Train

The New River Train runs only four times per year, on October weekends, and tickets are expensive. For railroad buffs and lovers of pristine scenery, the 300-mile trip is worth every penny, because the New River Train takes you through West Virginia's New River Gorge National River, part of the US National Park system, during the peak fall foliage season – and the scenery is truly spectacular. The New River Train, which is operated by the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society, uses Amtrak and private railcars. You can board the train in Huntington or St. Alban's for the trip to Hinton and back. Huntington is two and one-half hours by car from Columbus, Ohio, four and one-half hours from Pittsburgh and almost seven hours from Washington, DC.

Ticket prices vary by type of service. Premium service includes continental breakfast and dinner, while coach service does not. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase on the train, and you can buy food during your stop in Hinton. The train is not wheelchair-accessible; if you use a wheelchair you will probably need to travel with a companion. Contact the C. P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society for more information.

The town of Cass remains relatively unchanged since its founding in 1901 by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. Cass was built as a company town for the loggers who worked in the nearby mountains. Construction of the railroad started in 1901. It was used to haul lumber to the mill at Cass. The railroad track was eventually extended to the top of Bald Knob, the third highest mountain peak in West Virginia. In June 1942, the Cass operation was sold to Mower Lumber Company, which operated the town until July 1960, when the mill and railroad were shut down due to rapid decline of the timber industry in the region. In 1961, Cass was brought into the state parks system. In 1977, the company town also was made part of the parks system. Over the years, the railroad was turned into a tourist line and the town was repaired and restored. Today, the railroad is still in full operation, and is managed by the Durbin Greenbrier Valley Railroad.

Shays Restaurant

In an age where rugged wilderness country, unspoiled streams and steam locomotives are but memories, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park provides unique appeal. Shiny black “Shay” steam locomotives continue to go into deep forests, recreating for visitors what was commonplace in 1905. Youth, many of whom have never seen an “iron horse,” literally jump for joy; and adults find it easy to remember the bygone era of steam engines on American Railroads; as billowing clouds of black sulfurous-smelling coal smoke, a clear and melodic whistle, and the hiss of clean white steam announce the departure of the train. Before or following your train ride, enjoy a meal at “Shays” at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.
