Watching the Total Eclipse Across North America

pink sky travel tennis

By The New York Times

Today, in one of the greatest one-day migrations in history, humans flocked by the millions to a swath of North America that was briefly cast in a shadow of darkness and wonder. They crowded into airplanes, buses and trains, braved traffic jams, and slept in overpriced hotels, in tents and in their cars. For a cosmic moment, they were connected across the millennia with every other person who has ever experienced an eclipse, witnessing the light die and then be reborn as a dazzling ring. — Dennis Overbye

Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.

Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.

Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.

Total solar eclipse 2024 highlights: Live coverage, videos and more

During the cosmic spectacle, the moon’s movements will temporarily block the sun’s light, creating minutes of darkness, and will make the sun's outer atmosphere, or the corona, visible as a glowing halo.

Here are moments of the celestial activities across the country:

The total solar eclipse is just 3 days away: Where will clouds, storms spoil the view?

We're in the home stretch now: North America's much-ballyhooed total eclipse of the sun is now just a mere three days away.

The total eclipse will pass over parts of roughly a dozen U.S. states as it moves from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of April 8.  Millions of people are expected to travel  to see it, which will also attract scientists from across the country  to study its unique effects  on the Earth  and its atmosphere .

The  full total solar eclipse experience  will plunge people along a narrow path into darkness midday, but people outside  the path of totality  can still use eclipse glasses (maybe  free eclipse glasses ) to see the moon pass in front of the sun.

That is, if clouds don't get in the way.

Where are clear skies most likely?

Within the path of totality , the best chances for clear viewing are in "northern New England and from southern Missouri to central Indiana," the Weather Prediction Center said Friday.

The National Weather Service forecast office in Burlington, Vermont, said "sky cover is still looking mostly sunny for eclipse day on Monday." In New York State, the Albany office confirmed the good forecast: "We have good news for those wishing to view the eclipse. Very pleasant spring weather conditions arrive just in time for the start of the new work week and the day of the Great North American Solar Eclipse."

Where might clouds spoil the view?

Based on past weather patterns, the Hill Country of Texas was supposed to be the ideal location for eclipse viewing: Texas' typically sunny weather, major cities such as Austin and San Antonio that are ready for tourists, and location under the path of totality all combined to make it an easy recommendation for people willing to travel.

But those hopes appear to be dashed as of Friday.

The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio said that widespread clouds are likely in that part of Texas Monday afternoon, and that "for now eclipse viewability through the cloud cover is expected to be poor."

In addition to clouds, AccuWeather says that portions of Texas will have to endure stormy weather on Monday: "Showers and drenching thunderstorms can occur across east Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley on Monday and slowly move northward into southern Oklahoma later in the day and night. Some of the heavier storms can produce flooding, hail, and brief strong wind gusts."

What about around the Great Lakes?

Elsewhere, the Weather Prediction Center said that "cloud cover in the path of totality is also possible for portions of Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, and far western New York."

The weather service in Cleveland offered a modicum of hope: "Exact details for the April 8, 2024 eclipse remain uncertain, although confidence is medium to high that the area will not experience completely opaque/overcast skies."

What time is the solar eclipse?

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. You can search by zip code to find the exact time for your location.

Monday’s solar eclipse path of totality may not be exact

A new map is projecting that the path of totality for  Monday's solar eclipse  may be narrower than experts previously believed. But if you're right on the edge of the path, don't go changing your plans just yet.

New amateur calculations suggest that  widely-accepted path  could be off by as much as just a few hundred yards. The potential shift in the eclipse's path is so miniscule, in fact, that a NASA spokesperson  told the Detroit Free Press  that the U.S. space agency won't be making any alterations to its own calculations.

So, even if the new calculation is more accurate, it’s unlikely to matter much for most of the  millions of skygazers  who hope to witness the  first total solar eclipse in North America in seven years .

The new eclipse calculations come courtesy of John Irwin, a member of the team of amateur astronomers analyzing the celestial event for the  Besselian Elements .

But don't fret too much: Not only is the new analysis not yet peer-reviewed, but NASA told the Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, that its predictions have not changed.

However, NASA spokesman Tiernan Doyle acknowledged "a tiny but real uncertainty about the size of the sun" could lead to a narrower eclipse path.

More celestial wonders on the way: 'Devil comet,' Lyrid meteor shower, pink moon also visible in April

The eclipse isn't the only sky spectacle to look forward to this month: From a "devil comet" to a stunning pink moon, a few other celestial events will give skygazers plenty of reason to look up in April once the total solar eclipse has come and gone Monday.

While the famed "devil comet"  may be visible during the solar eclipse  itself, astronomers say that the celestial body will be best sighted on April 21. That's the day that the comet, officially known as  12P/Pons-Brooks , will make its closest approach to the sun.

The comet earned its demonic nickname from its distinctive tail that resembles horns.

The Lyrid meteor shower will also make its annual appearance this month, with its peak on April 21-22. The Lyrids,  one of the oldest-known meteor showers  on record, has reliably peaked every year in late April like clockwork for thousands of years.

Finally, the full pink moon will rise in the evening sky on April 23. This month's full moon name comes from the moss pink wildflower that sprouts this time of year.

Can you drive during a solar eclipse?

It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse.

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to find a safe place to park and then wear your eclipse glasses to view the eclipse.

Authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing solar eclipse glasses . Eclipse glasses are designed specifically for viewing an eclipse and you would not be able to see the road adequately while wearing them.

Owls may hoot and bats may fly during the eclipse, but don't expect coyotes to howl

We human beings are giddy with excitement for the upcoming eclipse on Monday, but what about the animals? It's safe to say they don't even know it's coming. How will they react when the moon blots out the sun and it gets dark?

"It will be a complete surprise to our wildlife, but we do know from other parts of the world some will assume it's nighttime all of a sudden," said Toni Mikula, a fish and wildlife scientist with Vermont Fish & Wildlife. "Birds hurrying to go to roost. Owls starting to hoot or you might see some bats come out. Three minutes later the sun will start to rise again. Everybody will go back to normal."

Mikula doesn't expect anything overly dramatic, like coyotes beginning to howl. But she'll be monitoring reactions near her home during the eclipse.

"I'm fortunate, I have a pretty good view of the sky from my house," Mikula said. "The state is encouraging people to stay home that day. I will be outside listening to see if any owls come out to hoot."

New York inmates who claimed lockdown was religious violation will be able to see eclipse

Inmates at a New York prison  who sued the state corrections department  over a planned lockdown during the  eclipse  will be able to see the  celestial event  after all.

The lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in upstate New York claimed that the lockdown, which would have prevented many statewide inmates from witnessing Monday's solar eclipse, constituted a violation of religious rights.

"For many, this eclipse is a moment of monumental religious significance that cannot be overlooked or dismissed out of hand," according to the lawsuit, which listed six plaintiffs of various religious faiths.

Corrections officials agreed Thursday to permit the plaintiffs – a Baptist, a Muslim, a Seventh-Day Adventist, two practitioners of Santeria and an atheist – to view the eclipse in exchange for the lawsuit's dismissal, department spokesman Thomas Mailey told USA TODAY.

What Were the Red Dots around the Total Solar Eclipse?

During the total solar eclipse, skywatchers saw ruby-colored prominences sticking out of the moon's shadow. Here's the science of those red dots

By Meghan Bartels

Total eclipse with several red bumps seen along the edge of the dark moon

A view of the April 8 total solar eclipse from Mason, Tex., shows several reddish solar prominences within the sun's white corona.

Lucie McCormick

This article is part of a special report on the total solar eclipse that will be visible from parts of the U.S., Mexico and Canada on April 8, 2024.

Sky watchers got a special treat during the April 8 total solar eclipse when the always stunning spectacle of totality was adorned with a couple of solar prominences, which appeared as reddish dots in locations around the moon’s outline.

“There was a very impressive prominence visible during this eclipse,” says Lisa Upton, a solar scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo. “Stunning to behold!! This was such a magnificent eclipse for anyone who was fortunate enough to see totality.”

A total solar eclipse is the only time when earthlings can see the sun’s atmosphere, or corona. During an eclipse, the moon blocks all the light from the sun’s visible surface, which usually masks the corona. But during totality, for just a couple of minutes, the corona appears as a fiery white halo around the black moon. And scientists knew that the corona could be particularly interesting during this eclipse , which coincided neatly with the maximum of the sun’s 11-year activity cycle .

Those expectations were met when the sun provided a stunning prominence that was visible near the bottom of our host star to many during totality. (The sun’s orientation varies depending on a viewer’s location on Earth. The sun appeared to be rotated about 90 degrees between Mexico, where the eclipse’s shadow made landfall , and Canada, where it returned to the ocean.)

A solar prominence is a massive loop of the sun’s plasma that hangs attached to the visible surface of the sun, forming perhaps within a day but lasting as long as several months, according to NASA. They come in a couple of different varieties, most notably eruptive prominences, which are more dynamic structures, and quiescent ones, which can become eruptive when a new prominence forms below them.

Prominences often appear reddish because their plasma can originate deeper in the sun’s atmosphere, in a layer called the chromosphere, which is characterized by hydrogen at high temperatures that emits red light. By the 18th and 19th centuries, scientists were familiar with prominences during eclipses but initially believed that these features were potentially caused by clouds in the moon’s atmosphere. We now know that the lunar atmosphere is much too thin for clouds.

The moon does cause a different stunning phenomenon during every total solar eclipse, called Baily’s beads. These are brief flashes of light along the moon’s outline that occur at the very beginning and end of totality and are caused by sunlight sneaking through valleys on the moon’s surface. Baily’s beads aren’t visible during the rest of totality, however, like the prominences were during the April 8 eclipse.

Why Is the Sky Pink? The Science Behind Pink Skies

Photo of very bright pink clouds in the sky

Blue skies are beautiful as they are. But there’s something uniquely intriguing about a pink sky. Whether it’s a few clouds that appear to be tinted with blush or a magnificent sunset splashing hot pink above, pink skies are simply unforgettable.

But why is the sky pink? Here’s a bit of the science behind our color-changing sky and a few scenarios that lead to the fantastic phenomenon of temporary pink skies.

A Scattering of Color

Illustration of the colors and wavelengths of the spectrum of visible light

You might already know that the spectrum of visible light contains a whole range of colors. And as you can see in the image above, each color has a different wavelength. Blue and violet have the shortest wavelengths, and the wavelengths gradually increase as you get closer to red.

Those wavelengths are important because they help explain why we see different colors in the sky. As light reaches through the atmosphere, it runs into various types of particles. When this happens, the light scatters through the atmosphere in a phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering.

However, not all wavelengths of light scatter equally. Rayleigh’s scattering law holds that the amount a given type of light scatters is inversely proportional to the fourth power of its wavelength.

What this boils down to is that the shorter the wavelength, the more light scatters. Blue light and violet light have the shortest wavelengths. The sun produces much more blue light than violet light, and because the blue light scatters far and wide (and our eyes are much more sensitive to it), the sky appears blue.

Diagram of how Rayleigh scattering makes the sky appear blue

Barring excessive clouds or other unforeseen weather events, the sky looks blue for much of the day. But during sunrise and sunset (the times when you’re most likely to see pink in the sky), the light of the sun has to travel further before it reaches us.

The short wavelengths of blue light still scatter, but that scattering tends to happen higher up in the atmosphere. By the time light reaches all the way down, longer wavelengths are the most visible. And as you saw in the diagram above, red light has the longest wavelengths of all visible light.

So why doesn’t the sky look red instead of pink? In some cases, you will see deeper red skies. But on the diagram, you can see that there’s no designated wavelength for pink light.

Some of the sun’s light that reaches Earth’s surface is white. And when that white light mixes with the red light that has filtered through, you get a brilliant, pink-tinted sky.

What Makes the Sky Pink?

To the casual observer, it may appear that pink (and all the other colors of the sky) show up at random. But certain events are more likely to cause the kind of light scattering that leads to a pink sky. Here are some of the most common ones.

The Sun Rising or Setting

Bright pink and yellow sunrise over a tropical beach

Sunrises and sunsets are known for their breathtaking colors. But have you ever stopped to think about why they’re as colorful as they are?

During both sunrise and sunset, the sun is very low on the horizon. When the sun sits that low, light has to travel further to reach the surface of the Earth. When white light has to travel further, the blue wavelengths of light scatter long before they reach our eyes. In many cases, we only end up seeing the longer wavelengths of red, orange, and yellow light.

Depending on clouds, dust, pollution, and other particles in the air, some wavelengths may be more noticeable to us. You’ve probably seen some sunsets that were a mix of pink, red, orange, and yellow. But you’ve likely also seen some that were almost entirely pink!

Clouds and Natural Molecules in the Atmosphere

Fluffy, pink-tinted cloud in front of blue sky

Like everything else in the world, the Earth’s atmosphere is made up of countless tiny molecules. And as we saw above, the scattering of light off of these molecules is responsible for the color of the sky.

During most normal daylight conditions, the sky looks blue. But when the sun’s light runs into more interference than normal, you’ll start to see different colors (normally those of longer wavelengths). That interference can come from clouds as well as the many types of gases in the atmosphere.

This is the same process that happens when the sun rises or sets. When light travels further, it runs into more interference along the way. And by the same token, if light is traveling a shorter distance but runs into more atmospheric particles, you just might see pink and other exciting shades.

Air Pollution

Hazy pink smog over Los Angeles skyline

Unfortunately, not all the atmospheric particles the sunlight hits are natural. Air pollution isn’t a new problem, but it is a worsening one. When various types of pollutants gather in the air, longer wavelengths of light are scattered down to us.

Air pollution is more concentrated in some areas than others. Some larger cities seem to have a haze of smog along the skyline. Los Angeles (pictured above) is a great example. As you can see, the sunlight through the smog sometimes gives it a pinkish, rosy glow. It can be a pretty sight from afar, but it doesn’t bode well for a city’s air quality!

An Impending Storm

Pink and purple storm clouds at sunset

In many areas of the world, the sky will take on an unusual (and sometimes eerie) color right before a storm. A great example of this was right before Typhoon Hagibis struck Japan. The clouds of this storm were so thick that the sky seemed to glow with a vivid magenta color.

Seeing a dramatic, nearly all-pink sky is a relatively rare occurrence. But even if the sky above doesn’t look completely pink, storm clouds may give it a pinkish tint.

The Pink Sky in Folklore

Soft pink sunset reflected in the still waters of a marina

Pink skies have captivated us for centuries, so it’s only fitting that they’ve made an appearance or two in the world of folklore. You may have heard the phrase “red (or pink) sky at night, sailors’ delight; red (or pink) sky at morning, sailors take warning.” It means that if you see a pink or red sunset, the next day should bring calm and pleasant weather. But if you see a pink or red sunrise, the rest of the day might have storms or other types of bad weather in store.

This old adage has ancient roots — in the Bible, Jesus says “When it is evening, ye say, fair weather: for the heaven is red. And in the morning, foul weather today for the heaven is red and lowering” (Matthew 16:2-3). But experts say that there’s some truth to it.

At least in the middle latitudes of the world, storms generally travel from west to east. You already know that when the light of a rising or setting sun passes through heavy clouds, you’re more likely to see pink or red light.

The sun rises in the east, so it would illuminate any approaching storm clouds. Those clouds might make a sunrise pink or red. The sun sets in the west, and in this case, it would illuminate any departing clouds. That would create a red or pink sky at night, indicating that pleasant weather was coming.

The Color-Changing Sky

Vivid hot pink sunset with silhouettes of trees

Most of the time, the sky appears to be more or less the same color. But as you’ve likely already noticed, no two sunrises (or sunsets) are exactly the same. Pink is one of the most spectacular colors of the sky — it creates cotton-candy clouds and electric sunsets alike. Whether you like to use the colors of the sky to predict the weather or just like to see beautiful and unusual colors, keep an eye out for stunning pink skies!

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

  • Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
  • Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

Leah Williamson: Arsenal defender primed for first England start in over a year as Lionesses face Republic of Ireland

The Lionesses travel to Dublin for their second Euro 2025 qualifying match; England were held to a 1-1 draw in their opening match against Sweden at Wembley on Friday night, while the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 to France

Sarina Wiegman has confirmed Leah Williamson will start England's second Euro 2025 qualifying match after a 12-month injury absence, while warning her side must not underestimate the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night.

Williamson last turned out for England in a friendly match against Australia in April 2023.

But an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL) suffered days later caused the defender to miss a year of international football, which included England's World Cup campaign.

After being an unused substitute in Friday's 1-1 opening qualifying game draw against Sweden , Wiegman announced Williamson's start against Ireland in her pre-match press conference.

Leah Williamson has been included in an England Women's squad for the first time since rupturing her ACL

"We've had hard choices to make in the team because I think the competitiveness is really high and we have many options in different positions," Wiegman said.

"I think what Leah brings us is vision, in possession she's just very bright and finds the right pass.

"The flexibility, the defence, being able to defend the space behind her together with everyone else - because defending doesn't just start with one player, it starts with the team - and I hope Leah will bring that to the team tomorrow."

WILLIAMSON ON MCCABE 8-4-24

Williamson's England return was partially delayed after she was forced to withdraw from the squad in February due to a hamstring strain.

"It will be emotional," said Williamson, who captained England to glory at Euro 2022.

"I'm an emotional person. We've all seen me cry on many occasions. It was emotional on Friday because if there's a team you want to be in, in the world, England would be right up there. I love playing for England.

Walsh Exclusive

"I've enjoyed watching the girls, I've enjoyed being part of that journey in a different way, obviously I've got people that play for the team who are very important to me.

"It's been a difficult journey, I'd be lying if I said this wasn't the thing I'd had my focus on, this is where I wanted to get back to. I wanted to be good enough to get back into this squad, I've had some of the best memories of my life as part of this team."

Smith: Williamson's quality big boost

Sarina Wiegman says she's pleased to be able to include Williamson in selection but remains coy on captaincy

Sky Sports pundit Sue Smith:

"It's a positive on and off the pitch. We know the leadership capacity she brings. So many defensive qualities: the way she reads the game, how good she is in the air, in duels, but also build-up play from the back.

"There's games where I've watched England and they have conceded far too easily. The partnership with Leah and Millie Bright was really strong, and defensive solidity has suffered without them.

"Williamson has had little niggles trying to recover fully from such a long period out, which happens, but the quality she brings is great news for England."

Wiegman: Ireland tough to break down

x

England began their qualifying campaign with a draw against Sweden after Fridolina Rolfo cancelled out Alessia Russo's opener at Wembley on Friday.

Ireland were narrowly beaten 1-0 by France in their game on Thursday and Wiegman has cautioned her side not to underestimate their hosts at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.

"They were promoted to this group and I think don't underestimate anyone, especially not Ireland," the Dutchwoman said.

"They've had a 1-0 result against France that was really good. What we expect is they are a physical team and are very well organised, so they can play the counter-attack.

"You can try to take that opportunity and moments that they will probably jump and press out, so we have to be aware of that. We're definitely going to think that's hard to break down their defence."

Analysis: Euros history won't guarantee success now

Lucy Bronze cuts a frustrated figure at Wembley

Sky Sports' Laura Hunter:

"England are reigning European champions but their latest qualification campaign began with a stutter. Sarina Wiegman was clearly frustrated by England's less-than-perfect display against Sweden on Friday night. There's lots to ponder, not least because their group is tougher than most. Momentum is proving hard to come by.

"Where the Lionesses were lacking at Wembley, which will be addressed by the reintroduction of Leah Williamson against Ireland, was pace at the back to combat two very direct wingers - Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Fridolina Rolfo, the latter scoring Sweden's equaliser.

"Positioning was off, too, and England were a little ponderous in possession. All of that should be improved by Williamson, who is a proven leader and organiser, as well as being excellent in possession.

Best of Leah Williamson

"Ireland at the Aviva Stadium will be testing. Journey back to Euro 2022 and England were far more defensively solid, registering four clean sheets across six games. Shut-outs have been much less frequent since, with just two in their most recent 12.

"Step-up is also needed from midfield duo Georgia Stanway and Keira Walsh, usually so reliable and tidy on the ball. Their efficiency in possession was combated well by the Swedes, but is crucial to the way England like to build through the thirds under Wiegman.

"More energy, intensity and sharper decision-making - all things Wiegman noted post-match - needed."

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

  17. Why Is the Sky Pink? The Science Behind Pink Skies

The sun rises in the east, so it would illuminate any approaching storm clouds. Those clouds might make a sunrise pink or red. The sun sets in the west, and in this case, it would illuminate any departing clouds. That would create a red or pink sky at night, indicating that pleasant weather was coming.
