M62 Roadworks

The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.

The M62 motorway is a major eastwest transportation route through Northern England, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Hull. It starts at the junction of the M60 and the M62 near Manchester, and terminates at Clifton, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It was built between 1964 and 1976.

Safety on the M62 has historically been a concern, with the road having a higher than average number of fatalities and serious injuries. In 2004, the Highways Agency set up a safety scheme on the M62 known as Operation Edgeware, which resulted in a reduction of fatalities and serious injury accidents by around 50%.

In recent years the M62 has seen several improvements in safety, including the introduction of dedicated hard shoulder running systems and an Automated Incident Detection System. In the 2016/17 financial year statistics indicate that the road saw a total of 408 accidents resulting in personal injury, of which 43 resulted in fatalities.

Information: Very heavy congestion on M62 Eastbound at Junction 20 due to workforce on the road. Down to one lane out of four. Best to turn off and look for an alternative route.

WITHOUT a doubt. the people who the overhead gantry signs in the greater Manchester are the most incompetent lot of articles i have ever come across. Take W/E 15 17 OCT. I tried to get home from A627M from the ROYTON ROUNDABOUT. about midnight on 15/10/2021. i found the whole roundabout down to one lane the slip road entrance to the A627M was blocked off . AS USUAL no warnings of any sort of the SIGNS on THE MOTORWAY M62 EAST or anywhere else. LAST FRIDAY 22/2021 IT GOT WORST driving from J17 WHITEFIELD TO J20 EAST i went of the M62 to the roundabout expecting to travel along the A 627M TO OLDHAM i found the entrance to the A627M OLDHAM was blocked off. not one warning sign on the M60 OR M62 EAST. it got worse on my way home from ROYTON i found the entrance to the A627M TOWARDS J20 WEST blocked off. it was about midnight. So PICKED UP THE M62 WEST AT HEYWOOD. on my way home to J17 at WHITEFIELD. guest what J17 SLIP ROAD WAS CLOSED. not one warning sign was lit up i was trying to get home to WHITEFIELD. The people of PRESTWITCH AND WHITEFIELD has suffer 6 years of misery while these motorways were turned into smart motorways. it is still going on. some of it was caused by the people giving out the info of the motorway closures . they caused chaos with misleading information caused accidents when they put out warning signs -motorways closed when they were open. motorways open A ND when motorways open when they were closed. Take J17 M60 EAST/WEST it has been the most shut down than any other part of the whole motorway system most cases no warning signs on these clever brightly lit matrix information. EVEN now i travel the M60/M62 EAST WEST and what do i see. warnings signs lit up telling people of roadworks ahead on M1 M6 hundreds of miles away from my area when they can not even tell us what is happening in the local area. a few weeks ago i went east from J17 TO J20 about 9pm as i past J18 the overhead gantries were lit up warning drivers to slow down, as there were 3 lanes closed it showed 3 lanes with red crosses on eveybody slowed down. a queue formed. A couple of miles down the road the 3 lanes were never shut down. The bloody warning signs had been left on from an earlier incident do you see what i am getting at ANYHOW whose bothered hundreds of millions of pounds has been spent on these motorways. it is only taxpayers money no one regulates how it is spent. if these things keep happening it does not matter there is plenty more money where thay comes from/

M25 closure: Everything you need to know as drivers face delays on first morning of 'nightmare' diversion

The UK's busiest motorway is shut in both directions this weekend across a five-mile stretch. Here's what you need to know about how bad traffic could be, a map of the diversion route and why it's happening.

live travel news m62

Drivers are facing significant delays as a section of the M25 shuts in both directions this weekend in an unprecedented move.

Motorists saw two miles of congestion on the approach to the closure in Surrey this morning, as traffic builds along the main diversion route through Byfleet, West Byfleet, Woking and Ottershaw.

National Highways estimated that the average journey time along the diversion route on Saturday morning was 25 minutes.

The closure of a five-mile stretch between junctions 10 and 11 on the UK's busiest motorway is already causing travel chaos - just hours into a two-and-a-half day closure.

Daryl Jordan, of Woking Borough Council, said residents will be "affected massively" by the closure, adding: "It's going to be a nightmare."

South East Coast Ambulance Service, which covers Surrey, also urged drivers to clear the way for ambulances ahead of a "challenging weekend" for crews.

But how long will the section be shut, where are the diversion routes and why is it happening?

Here's everything you need to know.

When is the closure and how long will it last?

The closure started at 9pm on Friday 15 March and the section will be shut until 6am on Monday 18 March, covering the five-mile stretch between junction 10 and 11.

What is the diversion route?

Here's the 11.5-mile diversion route that's been outlined by National Highways, which maintains England's motorways:

  • Junction 10 to junction 11: Northbound A3 to Painshill Junction, A245 towards Woking, and then A320 to M25 junction 11
  • Junction 11 to junction 10: A320 south towards Woking, A245 towards Byfleet and Painshill junction, Southbound A3 to junction 10.

You can see it on the map below:

A map showing the M25 closure and the diversion route

And here are some Google Maps screenshots showing roads that are part of the diversion route:

Satnav warnings

Drivers are being urged to ignore satnavs and only follow official diversion routes to prevent causing gridlock during an "unprecedented" closure.

Jonathan Wade, National Highways project lead, said the amount of disruption will partly depend on whether drivers stick to official diversions.

"How many people are going to take the initiative and try and use satnavs?" he said.

"There's probably a greater risk of congestion by people just doing their own thing and thinking they can perhaps beat the signs and find a shorter or quicker route.

"That will cause further congestion on some of the key junctions so please avoid doing that if at all possible."

National Highways senior project manager Daniel Kittredge said: "If people move away from diversion routes that we prescribe, it creates additional issues in different parts of the road network.

"The majority of the time that will be local roads, so that really impacts residents in those particular areas.

"That's why we're trying to encourage people to not follow the satnav.

"Stick on the prescribed diversion route. It's going to be more suitable for your journey."

How bad could it be?

It's the first scheduled daytime all-lanes shutdown on the M25 since it opened in 1986, so the full extent of possible delays is not yet known.

This section of the M25 normally carries between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles in each direction per hour from 10am until 9pm at weekends, so the disruption caused by the works is expected to be significant.

More than 200,000 vehicles are expected to be affected, including many travelling in and out of London, and to and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports and Channel ports.

Business owners along the diversion route have said they were forced to make cuts to their services in anticipation of traffic.

Mark Pollak, owner of Billy Tong, which caters for events and sells biltong at markets, said he expects to see 50% of the firm's turnover for the weekend go "down the drain".

He said he had to refuse a request for Billy Tong to cater an event in Guildford and had to cancel its stall at Surbiton Farmers' Market on Saturday, with staff not wanting to face expected traffic to get to jobs.

What advice has been issued?

"Drivers should only use the M25 if their journey is absolutely necessary," said Mr Wade.

"This is the first of five full closures of one of the busiest junctions on our road network," he added.

"We have spent months planning for these closures and making sure there are diversion routes in place, but there will still be heavy congestion and delays."

'Motorists should decorate the bathroom'

Mr Wade also advised motorists to find something to do at home like " decorate the bathroom " or "play in the garden" ahead of the closure.

He urged people to avoid travelling altogether.

"Avoid the area totally if you can," he told The Independent's daily travel podcast.

"Either avoid travelling completely or find something to do at home, decorate the bathroom or something, I don't know, or play in the garden.

"If you must go, travel by train, walk, use your bicycle.

"If you can, avoid driving anywhere around those diversionary routes."

Airport warnings

People due to travel to Gatwick and Heathrow could also be affected by the closure.

Heathrow Airport is advising passengers planning to use this part of the M25 to allow for extra time before their flight.

"Passengers using public transport should also be aware that The Airline (between Heathrow and Gatwick) and RailAir (RA2), will be running amended timetables over this weekend, please check with your operator for the latest information," their statement said.

A London Gatwick Airport spokesperson told Sky News: "Passengers driving to the airport are advised to check diversion routes before they travel and allow extra time for potential delays.

"Gatwick's train station is well-connected and is a great alternative option for people travelling to the airport this weekend."

'You ain't seen nothing yet'

Steve Gooding, director of motoring research charity the RAC Foundation, said: "For drivers who've already had their patience tried by the queues at the junction 10 works, the phrase 'you ain't seen nothing yet' springs to mind."

"National Highways' plea for people to avoid driving in the area applies not just to trips on the M25, but also to those on surrounding local roads on to which the M25 traffic will be diverted," he added.

"The hope must be that drivers take great care, however frustrating the delays and disruption might be.

"The last thing we need is shunts or crashes, however minor, because the slightest mishap will compound the misery."

Other motoring experts have warned that official estimates of congestion levels may be "optimistic" while local councillors in areas where motorway traffic will be diverted are anticipating "gridlock".

Why is it happening?

Government-owned company National Highways said the action is necessary to enable a bridge to be demolished and a new gantry to be installed as part of a £317m improvement project.

National Highways says the project will increase the number of lanes and make it easier to enter and exit the M25 at junction 10, which is one of the UK's busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

"These improvements will bring long-term benefits to drivers who pass through this stretch of the M25, not to mention pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders who will also see positive changes in the area," Mr Wade said.

Is the closure a one-off?

No - it's just one of five planned full closures between the junctions. The other dates have not yet been confirmed.

"Three of those closures will be between junctions 10 and 11 - the A320 at Chertsey... and two of them will be between junction 9 at Leatherhead to junction 10 at Wisley," Mr Wade said.

He said the dates of the later stages would be released in due course with motorists given plenty of notice.

"We will not just spring them on people," he said, adding they would take place between May and December.

The project began in summer 2022 and is expected to last three years in total.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 96th Academy Awards, a ceremony which honored excellence in cinematic achievements for some of the past year's biggest films.

"Oppenheimer" earned seven Oscars from its 13 total nominations, including the top prize of the night, best picture, as well as best director for Christopher Nolan.

In the lead acting categories, "Poor Things" star Emma Stone took home the award for best actress while "Oppenheimer" star Cillian Murphy took home best actor.

"The Holdovers" star Da'Vine Joy Randolph and "Oppenheimer" star Robert Downey Jr. snagged wins in the supporting acting categories.

For all the biggest moments from the 2024 Oscars, keep reading below.

  • Robert Downey Jr. wins best supporting actor
  • Da'Vine Joy Randolph wins best supporting actress

'Oppenheimer' wins best picture

"Oppenheimer" won the Oscar for best picture.

"I think any of us who make movies know that you kind of dream of this moment," producer Emma Thomas said. "I could deny it, but I have been dreaming about this moment for so long, but it seemed so unlikely that it would ever actually happen, and now I'm standing here and everything's kind of gone out of my head."

Thomas said director Christopher Nolan -- her husband -- was the reason the film became what it was, calling him "singular" and "brilliant," before giving a shoutout to their four children.

Al Pacino presented the category in celebration of the 50th anniversary of "The Godfather Part II."

Other nominees in the category included "American Fiction," "Anatomy of a Fall," "Barbie," "The Holdovers," "Killers of the Flower Moon," "Maestro," "Past Lives," "Poor Things" and "The Zone of Interest."

Emma Stone wins best actress

Emma Stone won the best actress Oscar for her performance in "Poor Things."

In her acceptance speech, Stone acknowledged her fellow nominees in the category.

"The women in this category -- Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily -- I share this with you," she said. "I'm in awe of you. It's been such an honor to do all of this together. I hope we get to keep doing more together."

"The other night, I was panicking -- as you can see, happens a lot -- that maybe something like this could happen," she continued. "And Yorgos said to me, please take yourself out of it. And he was right. Because it's not about me. It's about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. And that is the best part about making movies, is all of us together. And I am so deeply honored to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, with every single person who poured their love and their care and their brilliance into the making of this film."

Stone then thanked director Yorgos Lanthimos for giving her "the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter." She ended her speech by thanking her mom, her dad, her brother Spencer Stone, her husband Dave McCary and her daughter.

"I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl," she said.

This is Stone's second Oscar win. She previously won best actress for 2016's "La La Land."

Stone also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA this awards season for her work in "Poor Things."

Before the Oscar was announced, each best actress nominee was honored by previous best actress winners including Michelle Yeoh, Sally Field, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Lange.

Other nominees in the category included Annette Bening for "Nyad," Lily Gladstone for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Sandra Hüller for "Anatomy of a Fall" and Carey Mulligan for "Maestro."

Christopher Nolan wins best director

Christopher Nolan won the Oscar for best director for "Oppenheimer."

During his acceptance speech, Nolan thanked Universal Studios and the authors of the biography on which the movie is based, "American Prometheus," by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.

He also thanked all the cast members including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy, as well as his wife, "the incredible Emma Thomas … producer of all our films, and all our children. I love you."

"Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old," he continued, adding, "We don't know where this incredible journey is going from here, but to know that you think that I'm a meaningful part of it, means the world to me. Thank you very much."

In addition to best director, Nolan was also nominated tonight for best adapted screenplay, which ultimately went to Cord Jefferson for "American Fiction."

This awards season, Nolan has won a Golden Globe for best director and BAFTAs for best director and best film.

Other nominees in the best director category at the 2024 Oscars included Justine Triet for "Anatomy of a Fall," Martin Scorsese for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Yorgos Lanthimos for "Poor Things" and Jonathan Glazer for "The Zone of Interest."

Cillian Murphy won the Oscar for best actor for his role in "Oppenheimer."

The actor, who portrayed physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in "Oppenheimer," said he was "overwhelmed" to have won the award.

"I'm a very proud Irishman standing here tonight," he said. "We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb and, for better or for worse, we're all living in Oppenheimer's world, so I would really like to dedicate this to peacemakers everywhere."

Murphy accepted the Oscar from a group of previous best actor winners, including Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker.

This awards season, Murphy has won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA.

Other nominees in the category included Bradley Cooper for "Maestro," Colman Domingo for "Rustin," Paul Giamatti for "The Holdovers" and Jeffrey Wright for "American Fiction."

Biden kicks off post-State of the Union travel blitz in Pennsylvania

President Joe Biden kicked off a travel blitz Friday after his State of the Union address , heading to the critical swing state of Pennsylvania to drive home some of the key points he delivered during Thursday’s address.

The president’s speech in a solidly Democratic county almost immediately attacked former President Donald Trump. Biden criticized his record on reproductive rights issues and invoked a family affected by Alabama’s controversial state Supreme Court ruling that embryos are considered children, which prompted in vitro fertilization providers to halt services.

“Do you know why it happened? I’ll tell you why. One reason: Donald Trump,” Biden said Friday of that family’s paused IVF plans. “He came to office determined to overturn Roe v. Wade. In fact, he’s bragged about it repeatedly.”

The president then pivoted to issues including cooling inflation , lowering prescription drug prices and his demand to ban assault weapons .

“Too many corporations raise their prices and pad their profits, charging you more and more for less and less,” Biden said. “That’s why we’re cracking down on corporations engaged in price gouging and deceptive pricing.”

Biden also drew a contrast between his governing philosophy and Trump’s.

“My lifetime has taught me to embrace the future. I mean it sincerely: freedom, democracy, [and a] future based on the core values that have defined America,” Biden said. “Honesty, decency, fairness, equality.”

“Donald Trump sees the story differently,” Biden added. “He sees a story of resentment, revenge, retribution.”

President Joe Biden, right, is escorted by Air Force Cpt. Eric Anderson, 89th Airlift Wing Flightline protocol officer, as first lady Jill Biden, left, talks to Col. Angela Ochoa, commander of the 89th Airlift Wing,

The audience included people who have volunteered or worked for the Democratic Party, the Biden campaign or a similar organization. The high-energy crowd occasionally broke into chants of “four more years.”

Before the president’s speech, first lady Jill Biden delivered a forceful rebuke of her husband’s predecessor: “Donald Trump insults our veterans and disparages those who died in war, calling them ‘losers’ and ‘suckers.’ How dare he?”

“We must meet this moment as if our rights are at stake, because they are,” the first lady said. “As if our democracy is on the line, because it is.”

Aside from the State of the Union, Friday’s speech saw the largest audience for Biden since a January speech centered around abortion rights, which was interrupted more than a dozen times by anti-war protesters criticizing Biden’s response to the Israel-Hamas war.

The president’s speech kicks off what the campaign is calling a “month of action,” during which Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will visit every battleground state.

Biden will visit Georgia on Saturday, New Hampshire on Monday, Wisconsin on Wednesday and Michigan on Thursday, according to the campaign. Meanwhile, Harris visited Arizona on Friday and will travel to Nevada on Saturday, zeroing in on mobilizing Latino voters.

Of those states, Biden flipped Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona blue in 2020.

The president’s Cabinet and senior administration officials are also fanning across the country this month, with more than two dozen trips to states including Texas, Ohio, Florida and New York, according to the White House.

The campaign announced on Friday that “Team Biden-Harris” will open 100 offices, onboard at least 350 new staffers in battleground states, and is launching a six-week, $30 million ad buy with “intentional and sizable buys into Hispanic, African American, and AANHPI outlets and radio,” according to the campaign. The campaign often uses “Team Biden-Harris” as a shorthand to refer to itself and affiliated groups, such as the Democratic National Committee.

The $30 million ad buy is in a similar range as certain super PAC ad spending this campaign cycle . The pro-Biden super PAC Future Forward has spent about $20.8 million, the pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc. has spent $39.5 million, the pro-Ron DeSantis super PAC Never Back Down spent about $40.2 million, and the pro-Nikki Haley super PAC SFA Fund spent $64.4 million, according to AdImpact.
