In the city center is the Historic Haymarket District, an interesting area with shops, galleries, and restaurants, popular with both locals and tourists. The area around the capitol building has a number of important sites, including the Governor's Residence.

On the University of Nebraska campus, conveniently located in the heart of the city, are the Sheldon Museum of Art and the University of Nebraska State Museum. Outside the city center, but still within easy driving distance, some unique attractions are worth checking out, including the Speed Museum and the Quilt Museum.

Historic Haymarket District

The Historic Haymarket District is a wonderful place to stroll around, grab a bite to eat, or just people watch. The area is compact and consists of beautifully renovated and restored late 19th-century brick warehouses, brick streets, a large water tower, and a unique clock.

The Haymarket District has a lively vibe, as the University of Nebraska is nearby and the students frequent the many establishments packed into this small area. The most notable building is the Lincoln station . Once a railway depot, today it houses the visitor center and a restaurant. In the summer, the streets are frequently closed off for festivals and farmers markets.

Nebraska State Capitol

It took three tries for Nebraska to construct a capitol building that would last. The building today, the third one on this site, is unique in respect to other state capitols. It doesn't have the traditional dome, but instead, it incorporates a 400-foot tower containing offices.

The cost of the building was 10 million dollars and construction took 10 years, starting in 1922. The Nebraska State Capitol is well worth a visit for its limestone exterior depicting 3,000 years of democracy through carvings, and its ornate interior of marble columns, mosaic floors, and murals. The figure on the very top is a 19-foot-tall bronze figure of The Sower .

Memorial Stadium

Nebraskans are fanatical about their sports teams, and the Cornhuskers are no exception to this rule. If the team is playing when you are in town (and you can get tickets), a visit to the stadium during a home game is a fun thing to do. The nearly 90,000-person crowd is not shy about showing their allegiance, and the roar when the home team scores can be deafening.

Even if no games are scheduled, and you are a fan of college football, check out the Hall of Fame walk outside the arena and take the free self-guided tour. Some of the main highlights include the Bob Devaney statue, a set of historic columns dating from 1892, the trophy case, and, of course, the Huskers store full of all kinds of jerseys and other team swag. The self guided tour also allows you to enter the stadium and look at the playing field from gate 23A.

You can take the self guided tour any day of the week, although on game days and the lead up to game days, certain areas may be inaccessible. If you'd like a guided tour, these are available on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Where to stay in Lincoln, Nebraska

Even with Lincoln being a short drive from Omaha, I’ve stayed overnight in the city several times. Usually, I prefer staying in the Haymarket area since restaurants, attractions and stores are all within walking distance. The downside to Haymarket, though, as well as many downtown Lincoln hotels, is that parking is extra, typically.

Front desk at Graduate Lincoln

Here are a few of the hotels I recommend for families:

  • The Graduate Hotel (read my review …got kids? It has a pool)
  • Hyatt Place Haymarket (also has a pool)
  • And then there are these highly-rated Lincoln hotels with free breakfast that might suit your family.

No kids? Stay at some place a little more special:

  • The Scarlet Lincoln
  • The Rogers House Inn B&B

Frequently asked questions about Lincoln

What are some things to do this weekend in lincoln.

Lincoln is a busy place on the weekends, but it depends on your interests. If you like fresh food and live music, the Farmers Market held on Saturdays in the Haymarket is a good bet for entertainment from early May to mid-October. Fantastic touring performances come to Lincoln from rock to Broadway, so a few places to check for weekend show dates include Pinnacle Bank Arena , Lied Center For Performing Arts , and Rococo Theatre .

Looking for something to do with the kids? Pick a park! Our favorite is Antelope Park, but Lincoln has so many playgrounds to choose from.

What are some popular annual events and festivals in Lincoln?

Lincoln, Nebraska, has a lot of annual events to look forward to. In the spring, a few favorites include Lincoln Earth Day in April and the Lincoln Marathon in early May. Lincoln Calling, an art & music festival, is also in early May. Football fans also look forward to the Husker Spring Game.

In the summer, the city celebrates the Fourth of July with several events and one of the great, free celebrations is the Uncle Sam Jam at Oak Lake Park. In late August 2023, the city also brought back the very popular Lincoln Air Show.

Fall is a great time for pumpkin patches, and a nearby favorite is Roca Berry Farm’s Fall Festival in October. Roca isn’t too far from Lincoln. Lincoln Children’s Zoo holds Boo at the Zoo in late October, and it’s a blast for kids to trick or treat through the zoo.

The Lincoln zoo’s Zoo Lights is an annual highlight in the winter. It features one of the region’s largest lighting displays.

What are the local dining and restaurant options in Lincoln?

Some of our favorite restaurants are in Lincoln! For breakfast, I recommend Cultiva or Good Evans. And for brunch, the must-visit place is The Green Gateau. For breakfast pastries and great coffee, there’s nothing better than The Mill Coffee and Tea in the Haymarket.

For lunch, try a burger at Honest Abe’s Burgers & Freedom (there are a few locations) or go to Yia Yia’s for pizza. For dinner, good casual options include Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill, Blue Sushi Grill & Sake, Copal Progressive Mexican Cuisine. For a date night, try dinner at The Oven, which has some of the state’s best Indian dishes, or Dish, whose chef has been a James Beard nominee.

What are the best places to get ice cream in Lincoln?

This is one of our favorite questions to research! A classic ice cream shop in the Haymarket is Ivanna Cone. And, if you’re willing to drive away from all the city’s main attractions, go to UNL’s Dairy Store on the university’s East Campus. The handmade ice cream there is delicious!

Exploring The Capital City: The Ultimate Guide To Lincoln & Things To Do

Nebraska is more than just cornfields. This ultimate guide to Lincoln proves just that by revealing the top things to do in the state's capital city.

Quick Links

What to know when visiting lincoln, when to visit lincoln, nebraska, getting around lincoln, where to eat in lincoln, nebraska, things to do in lincoln, where to stay in lincoln, nebraska, spending the perfect day in lincoln.

Lincoln’s vital role as Nebraska’s capital city placed it on the map, however, this isn’t the only thing the city has to offer. There’s a friendliness among the people that’s appealing: it’s no wonder Lincoln was named the happiest city in America . Visitors are drawn to the wealth of attractions in Nebraska’s capital, from a tour of the State Capitol to exploring the museums, and even experiencing nature’s beauty in the over 130 parks.

For those who would like to experience this big city with the vibe of a small town, there’s so much to see and do that planning a trip might take a lot of research—and the right attitude. After all, Nebraska's tourism board says it's "not for everyone." To see whether Lincoln is the right fit, this ultimate guide to Lincoln has compiled the most essential information that a traveler would need to know, like the best time to visit, the top things to do and so much more.

Although Lincoln is the capital city of Nebraska, it isn’t the state’s largest city. That title goes to Omaha, another great travel destination , which has a population of close to 500,000 people. Lincoln is the second-largest city in the state with about 290,000.

Size doesn't always make for a better trip, though; Nebraska has many small-town destinations ideal for a vacation. Lincoln is better suited to those interested in cityscapes and trying new things.

The capital is home to the University of Nebraska’s Lincoln Campus, which boasts close to 30,000 students. The university is a popular attraction, foremost for prospective students who come to tour the campus, but also for tourists who want to check out the historic buildings.

The best time to tour the campus is during warm weather, although tours are conducted year-round.

The best time to visit Lincoln for good weather is from April to June and from September to October. Below is a look at what Lincoln is like during the different seasons and why the months above are the best times to visit.

Spring (March to May)

Early March is usually still a bit chilly, but as spring progresses, temperatures start to rise. April and May enjoy average highs of 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) and average lows of 46 degrees (8 degrees Celsius).

The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, which is ideal for spending time outdoors. This is also considered football season, and visitors who are fans of the sport can catch matches at Memorial Stadium.

However, the chances of rain are highest in May, so visitors should prepare for some wet days.

Summer (June to August)

It gets quite warm and humid in summer, with temperatures reaching highs of 89 degrees (32 degrees Celsius) in July and August. These are also busy tourist months in Lincoln, so hotel rates are highest during these months.

June is a good month to visit as temperatures don’t go as high as they do in July, but it’s still warm enough for those who prefer the heat. Highs in June are about 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius).

Autumn (September to November)

For visitors who prefer fewer crowds, autumn is a good time to visit. The weather in September and October is still pleasant, although these months experience some rainy days. Still, with average highs of 73 degrees (23 degrees Celsius), visitors can enjoy the outdoors without excessive heat.

However, November can be a chilly month, with highs of just 50 degrees (10 degrees Celsius) and lows of 28 (-2 degrees Celsius).

Winter (December to February)

Winter temperatures tumble to as low as 14 Fahrenheit (-10 Celsius), with January being the coldest (and snowiest) month of the season. This isn’t a good time to visit Lincoln as the weather is inappropriate for outdoor activities, limiting visitors to spending time indoors.

Visitors can fly into the Lincoln Airport , which receives flights from Chicago, Denver, and Houston. Those flying in from other US cities can land at the Omaha Eppley Airfield , which receives flights from Dallas, New York, Charlotte, Minneapolis, Phoenix, San Francisco, Vegas, and Atlanta, as well as Chicago, Denver, and Houston.

Lincoln is a bike-friendly city, with about 130 miles of bike trails. This includes a protected bikeway—the N Street Cycle Track—which runs from West Haymarket to the Antelope Valley Trails. This is the only protected bikeway in the state.

Because of the city’s vast trail network, visitors can choose to get around the city on a bike. There’s a bike share program known as BikeLNK , with e-bikes and conventional bikes available for use.

Visitors can take one-hour rides before returning the bike at any station.

  • It costs $8 to access the bikes for 24 hours and $12 for 72-hour access, allowing unlimited 1-hour rides.

Hiking around Lincoln

Walks around Lincoln, one of Britain’s most historic cathedral cities, are full of spellbinding sights. From the cobbled streets of its old town and its many cultural venues, to the many green spaces that surround the city, there’s a great deal of variety. You could be appreciating nature in all her glory one minute and taking in Lincoln’s rich heritage the next.

Perhaps Lincoln’s main draw is its historical sites, especially the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, which towers above the city in a grand display of Early Gothic architecture. Lincoln Castle is another jewel in the city’s crown, boasting fantastic walks around its walls that reward with extensive city views.

Hikes around Lincoln’s surroundings reveal nature-rich reserves, splendid country parks and serene waterways. It doesn’t take long to escape the city into the countryside and there’s always a pub or a cafe for that post-walk treat.

Lincoln’s historic masterpieces

No walk around Lincoln is complete without a visit to its spectacular cathedral. When its central spire was completed in 1311, it was thought to be the tallest building in the world, a status it held until 1548 when the spire collapsed. Today, it is an architectural masterpiece and is conspicuous in many views of the city.

A stroll through Lincoln’s historic quarter will almost always bring you to Lincoln Castle. Built in the late 11th century by William the Conqueror, it is one of only two castles in England to have two mottes and is one of the most intact medieval fortresses in the UK. It’s possible to walk the full circumference of its great stone curtain wall and explore the castle grounds, though you’ll need to buy a ticket.

Mind the gap

Geographically speaking, Lincoln is an intriguing place. The city was built in a gap in the Lincoln Cliff escarpment, through which the River Witham flows. The gap divides Lincoln into two unofficial regions: uphill and downhill. Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and much of the city’s historic sites are located in the traditionally more affluent uphill region, to the north of the gap. The modern city centre and train station are located in the downhill region.

Some of the best walking routes around Lincoln end up on one of its most famous streets, Steep Hill. This narrow, cobbled street connects the uphill and downhill regions, with the entrance to Lincoln Cathedral at the top. There are plenty of independent boutiques, tea rooms and pubs to have a mosey in after a long day exploring the city.

Waterways, parks, woodland and nature reserves

There are plenty of great hikes around Lincoln that depart the historic centre and seek out something a little more peaceful. The Fossdyke Navigation, thought to be England’s oldest working canal, offers relaxed ambles, while following the Witham’s riverside paths rewards with vibrant wildlife and opportunities to pop into a cosy country pub or two.

The city has plenty of parks, woodlands and commons to explore too. To the southwest, Hartsholme Country Park’s 200 acres (81 ha) of woodland, parkland, landscaped gardens and lakes is home to a plethora of wildlife, with deer, rabbits, lizards and a variety of birds. Yet more natural splendour can be found further out at Whisby Nature Park’s many lakes. To the west of the city is Skillingthorpe old wood, a beguiling ancient woodland that was once used as a Viking ritual site.

8 Smart, Easy Ways to Travel for Less in 2024

You’re not imagining it—trip costs are pricier than they’ve been in five years. We’ve got some simple ways to keep costs down even while rates are headed up. Don’t book your vacation until you read this.

Travel is so expensive post-pandemic. But I don’t want to give up the idea of an annual vacation. How can I keep costs down? —Tripping Out Over Expenses

Experts predict that this year will be the busiest ever for travel since before the pandemic. And for many, it’s already feeling like it might be the priciest. According to NerdWallet’s February 2024 travel inflation report , the cost of hotels, entertainment, and dining out are rising, with overall travel expenses for the past 12 months up 3.1 percent through January 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Hotels will be a big vacation investment. Lodging rates increased 5.2 percent between December 2023 and January 2024 alone. And traveler beware: the average daily hotel rate is projected to grow nearly 5 percent more in the next year, according to hotel-commerce platform SiteMinder . There’s been little respite from room rates hovering near all-time highs at properties across the U.S. this winter, and staff shortages will likely mean continued high prices but fewer services. You’re getting gauged even more for dining out: in January, prices for restaurant meals were 25.6 percent higher than the same month four years ago.

The coast of Baja Sur, Mexico, near Cabos San Lucas, is famous for its numerous resort properties, like this oceanfront one.

There is some good news: airfare—on domestic routes in particular—is predicted to drop 16 percent this year, according to Kayak. The travel-research engine estimates it will cost $461 on average to fly in the U.S. I recently booked a round-trip, direct flight from Denver to Newark, New Jersey, in April on United for a very reasonable $227. That’s about half of what I was paying for the same flight in April 2018.

That said, the overseas flights I’ve booked for spring and summer travel have given me serious sticker shock. International airfare departing from the U.S. is up 10 percent compared with 2023, according to Kayak . In the past, I’ve scored direct flights from Denver to Los Cabos, Mexico , for under $400; a flight for late March this year was $1,200. Similarly, a late-May flight from Denver to Majorca, Spain, was priced at over $3,000, when in the past I’ve seen it for as low as $600.

Some experts are optimistic that additional flights and routes , especially those from upstart low-cost carriers like Breeze Airways and Norse Atlantic Airways, will help lower international fares, but I’ll believe it when I see it. For now your best strategy is to book overseas fares early. According to Kayak, eight months is the sweet spot and can save you between 8 and 18 percent.

If you’re on a budget but still want to go big in some fashion, don’t despair; you can still have an affordable annual vacation if you’re willing to be flexible on timing, strategic about choosing a destination, and plan ahead. Here are some of my tricks, plus tips from industry experts on how to make that happen.

1. Travel in the Shoulder Season

A waterfall surrounded by lush green trees and plants is a hiker's dream in Costa Rica.

Shoulder seasons are periods when destinations see fewer tourists but aren’t closed for the off-season. The perks are fewer crowds and often great deals on hotels and flights, but on the flip side, shops and restaurants may be shuttered or have limited hours. Weather can also be a gamble. In Mexico , for example, September and October are the slowest months of the year for tourism; they’re also the wettest, and the time tropical storms are most likely to hit both coasts, says Zach Rabinor, founder of Journey Mexico.

Don’t dismiss destinations during a rainy season, though. In Costa Rica , you can save 30 to 40 percent between August and November and enjoy deserted beaches and lush rainforests, says Javier Echecopar, cofounder of Journey Costa Rica. “Those months are considered rainy, but usually with clear mornings followed by afternoon showers,” he says, adding that on the Caribbean side of the country, the coast tends to be very clear during those months, a result of microclimates.

If you’re seeking value above all else, you may need to skip bucket-list destinations this year, even during the slow seasons. I booked a trip to Rome in March, and while streets and major attractions were quieter, prices weren’t cheaper for my flight, hotels, or restaurant meals.

Jenna Swan, a travel agent with Embark Beyond, says you’ll find more value visiting less iconic cities during shoulder season. “A room in Paris could easily cost two or three times the amount of a room in Madrid,” she told me.

2. Pay Attention to the Extra Costs of Travel

I used to be quick to jump on a cheap airfare or hotel rate without considering the bigger picture. When choosing between a 6 A.M. flight priced at $450 versus a 10 A.M. priced at $500, I’d book the seemingly more affordable option. What I didn’t factor in was that getting to the airport would tack on extra fees: the $10 bus route I typically take doesn’t run that early, which meant I’d have to pay upward of $100 for an Uber, or drive and fork over as much as $50 a day for airport parking.

Additionally, major airlines are piling on more fees, for everything from checked bags to select seats, and airline websites often use design strategies known as dark patterns used to push consumers to buy extras (like a rental car or trip insurance) during their purchase.

3. Book an All-Inclusive Vacation

A family of four on a catamaran cruises away from the Caribbean shoreline of Mexico and into deeper turquoise waters.

Once associated with budget travelers and bottomless drinks, the all-inclusive-resort model has gone upscale, with properties that feature Michelin-star restaurants, fine wines, and privately guided activities. The initial price tag can seem spendy, but when you factor in everything, you get incredible value.

And all-inclusive stays aren’t just for beach holidays. Package-vacation pioneer Club Med now offers properties in Quebec and the Alps. A family of four booking Club Med’s five-night ski getaway in Charlevoix, Canada, can save upward of $7,000 compared to a plan-it-yourself ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado—even after factoring in airfare.

A woman sits in the sauna at Club Med Quebec Charlevoix in Canada, looking out at the Saint Lawrence River.

4. Use a Travel Agent

As a seasoned traveler, I used to think a travel agent would be of no use for me. I now view these professionals as travel wizards. They have industry connections that translate to free room upgrades and special perks, like resort credits, complimentary breakfast, and occasionally other amenities such as a bottle of wine waiting in the room, free airport transfers, and VIP access to museums and adventure sites. If anything goes wrong, they’re on call to help. And they know how to score great deals. When I reached out to a travel agent about the exorbitant Majorca flight, he was able to bring the cost down to $1,753—almost half of what I was looking at spending—by mixing airlines and connections.

5. Check the Exchange Rate—and Head to Where It’s Most Beneficial

Last summer I traveled to Croatia, not realizing the country had embraced the euro. When I visited in 2020, the dollar’s strength against the kuna made Croatia feel like an economic destination. But now it’s just as pricey as vacationing in France or Italy.

A good exchange rate gives you extra buying power to maximize your travel experience (think: more activities and spectacular meals). In Canada, given the strength of the U.S. dollar, everything is essentially 30 percent off for Americans; in Australia, around 35 percent. Asian countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, and South America nations like Colombia and Argentina, are also excellent places to stretch your dollar.

6. Let New Flight Routes Dictate Your Destination

An exterior shot of the new international airport in Tulum, Mexico, which opened in December 1, 2023.

Low-cost carriers offer some of their lowest prices when launching new routes. Frontier, for example, has promoted fares as low as $19 in the days following the announcement of new routes. And even after promotional fares disappear, having a new airline on a route adds competition that tends to nudge prices down. Many major airlines are also launching new routes this year. American, for example, will begin flying to the new airport in Tulum, Mexico, this month. Follow travel sites like Skift and the Points Guy, which keep up with this information.

7. Reconsider Hostels. Many Are New and Hip.

Yes, the grungy backpacker hotels of your post-college days still exist, but there’s also a crop of clean, budget-friendly hostel chains attracting crowds. Check out A&O , Freehand (which describes itself as “a collection of hotels that combine the social culture of a hostel”), and Generator . According to Oliver Winter, founder of A&O, the largest hostel brand in Europe, nearly 28 percent of guests are between the ages of 25 and 34. Boutique hostels often offer private rooms with an en suite bathroom, bunk rooms to accommodate families or groups of friends, and a place to make meals so you’re not forced to fritter away your budget dining out. I’ve stayed in a four-bed bungalow bunk room at the Freehand Miami with friends, and it felt as stylish and immaculate as a boutique hotel, plus, the bar, Broken Shaker, makes some of the best drinks in the city.

8. Save on Meals (but Still Eat Your Heart Out)

A hand holds up a panino filled with prosciutto and arugula. Behind it is Florence, Italy, and the Arno River.

I always try to book a hotel room that includes breakfast in the rate. My strategy: eat a hearty, late breakfast and then pocket a muffin and a banana for a snack later on that can tide me over until an early dinner.

Taking advantage of local street-food scenes can also save you heaps. A&O’s Winter says that Florence, Italy, is a little-known street-food city (though not full of food trucks, as Americans might imagine, but shops that sell various hot and cold sandwiches and beverages you can enjoy on the street). He likes Da’ Vinattieri , close to the National Museum of Bargello.

For the past 15 years, Outside travel-advice columnist  Jen Murphy has gone on a weeklong European ski vacation with friends that typically costs less than a long weekend of skiing in the U.S. She is a huge fan of off-season and shoulder-season travel and thinks the term “rainy season” should be changed to “green season.”

Airbnb bans indoor security cameras in rentals

Outdoor security cameras will still be allowed in some cases.

outdoor travel lincoln

Airbnb announced Monday that it’s banning the use of security cameras inside rentals.

Before this change, the platform allowed owners to have cameras in common areas, such as living rooms, kitchens and hallways, as long as they were disclosed on the listing. Security cameras were not allowed in areas such as bedrooms or bathrooms.

The change will go into effect April 30, Airbnb said in a blog post. The company said the majority of rentals on its platform do not report having a security camera, and the change is expected to affect a small number of rentals.

“Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb. These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community,” Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, said in the post.

Airbnb will continue to allow hosts to use security cameras and devices in outdoor spaces, such as ring cameras or noise decibel monitors, “to monitor security for their home and get ahead of issues like unauthorized parties,” the company said. Outdoor cameras will continue to be prohibited in outdoor spaces where there’s an expectation of privacy, such as outdoor showers or saunas.

Hosts must disclose the use of decibel monitors, and they will only be allowed in common areas, the company said.

Short-term rental competitor Vrbo said in a statement Monday that it has prohibited indoor cameras in rentals since 2022, but does allow outdoor cameras in common spaces if they are disclosed. The company said it requires additional disclosures if the outdoor cameras also capture pools.

“We are glad to see our competitor on board with what we consider a base level of privacy for customers,” Vrbo said in a statement.

Travelers have reported horrifying incidents of hidden cameras in short-term rentals over the years, and social media content creators have gone viral with tips on how to find them.

Airbnb settled a civil suit in 2015 with a customer who found hidden cameras in a California rental. In 2019, police in South Korea discovered cameras inside TV boxes, wall outlets and hair-dryer stands that had live-streamed approximately 1,600 guests in their hotel rooms. Later that year, a couple filed a lawsuit against a San Diego Airbnb owner who allegedly hid cameras inside small holes of the bathroom and the bedroom ceiling. Last year, a Texas couple sued their Maryland host after finding cameras in the bedroom during their stay in 2022.

Joe LaSorsa, chief executive of LaSorsa and Associates, a security firm, said Airbnb’s new rule is clear and straightforward, with no exceptions or loopholes.

He said the rule could possibly lead to an uptick in damage caused by guests. Since hosts will no longer be able to keep on eye on their visitors, they might strip their properties of valuables and amenities at risk of being broken or stolen.

For guests, the rule should allay their privacy concerns. However, LaSorsa said if guests are suspicious of hidden cameras, they should look for a WiFi signal being emitted from objects not normally associated with the Internet, such as alarm clocks and smoke detectors.

He also recommends shining a flashlight around the space. The light will pick up a camera lens. “Usually you can see some type of aperture or lens opening where you can actually see the lens itself. And, obviously that’s indicative of a camera,” he said.

Natalie Compton and Andrea Sachs contributed to this report.
