In the film, A seemingly purposeless shooting rampage claimed the lives of five people in a typical town one morning. The investigation quickly zeroes in on a single possible suspect, a former military sniper, who is taken into custody without delay. The questioning of the individual results in one statement: Get Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise).

Reacher, a mysterious former Army investigator, is convinced that the authorities have the correct suspect, but he still agrees to work with the sniper’s defense attorney (Rosamund Pike). However, the more Reacher investigates the situation, the less black and white it seems to be.

2. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

Jack Reacher returns to enforce his bold brand of justice in the action-packed sequel based on the 2013 novel Never Go Back by Lee Child.

In the films, Jack Reacher, a former soldier and drifter, completes his mission to dismantle a human trafficking organization, he travels to Washington, DC, to meet with his liaison, Major Susan Turner, for dinner. But instead, he runs into her replacement, Colonel Sam Morgan, who tells him that Major Turner has been arrested on espionage charges.

Jack consults with Colonel Bob Moorcroft, her seasoned attorney, who reveals that Major Turner is also under suspicion for the deaths of two American servicemen in Afghanistan. In addition, he informs Jack that a woman has filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that he is the father of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Jack is thrown in jail after being falsely accused of murdering Moorcroft. He realizes that he and Turner are both in the crosshairs of two assassins and that they have been set up. But he comes to her aid, and they make their escape. It doesn’t take long before they figure out that army personnel and a powerful government contractor/arms dealer are involved in a plot.

Additionally, Jack finds out that Samantha is in danger, and he and Turner end up saving her. While they investigate the source of the conspiracy, they decide to keep her safe from the assassin who is after them. What or who can we put our faith in?

Tom Cruise may very well be the one man left in Hollywood who commands the top spot in the box office opening weekend. Unfortunately, Jack Reacher didn't reach that feat, nor did it probably deserve to. But it's far from a weak spot in Cruise' long history of brilliant action fun. Jack Reacher stars several Oscar caliber actors including Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, and Werner Herzog. All of which provide fine performances. But if we are being honest, Cruise is having by far the most fun here. Reacher is a slightly more brutal and definitely cockier version of his now classic, Ethan Hunt character from M:I. Now over 50-years old, I'm glad he still loves delivering those cheesy punch lines as much as he is doing insane stunts. The film itself definitely takes itself a little bit more serious, however, which is where it runs into a few problems. Although I think Christopher McQuarrie's directorial effort for M:I 5 was impeccable, he has trouble balancing the tone and pace of this particular film. At times, it claims itself to be a serious and even tragic espionage thriller. But the final 30 minutes completely forget about the grounded tone and let Cruise loose on one of his bone-crushing Mission Impossible action sprees. I just would have liked a bit more of a happy medium between the two. With that said, the brilliance of the film lies within all of its espionage and mysterious elements. Way before Cruise throws a single punch or shoots any bullets, I was sucked into the mystery the opening presents. The opening segment, along with two other extended sequences, are impressively done with absolutely no dialogue, yet you understand exactly what's going on. McQuarrie's directing talent really shines there. Much of the rest of the film's fun comes from some expectedly great supporting performances from Duvall and Herzog. Both have minimal screen time but they nonetheless steal every scene they are in. There's without question fun to be had with their roles and the film itself, but I can't help but think some more time in the writer's room could have helped polish the film a little. There weren't any particular moments in the film I disliked, but the cohesiveness just wasn't present. +Cruise at his best +Fun supporting performances +Eerie tone in the first half -Too action heavy towards the end -Tonal issues 7.6/10

The new Three Stooges reboot has more sniper rifles than I remember the original series having.

It features a handfull of slick action scenes and an initially engaging plot, but Jack Reacher is ultimately little more than a disposable Cruise-headed thriller that's outclassed by many of its genre brethren.

Cruise doing his usual role of bad-ass. Enjoyable.

What to know about Alan Ritchson, the man-mountain star of Amazon's 'Reacher' TV series

"Reacher" revolves around a ferocious former military investigator, Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson), who roams the US as a nomad and helps those in need. The show's second season ended in January 2024, and Amazon is already filming "Reacher" season three .

Alan Ritchson leads the show, and audiences might recognize him from " Smallville ," "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," and "Titans."

Thanks to "Reacher" press tours in the last few years, the actor has spoken a lot about himself, so here's what you need to know about the star.

He married his high-school sweetheart, Catherine Richardson

Ritchson met his now-wife, Catherine Ritchson when they were 17 and in the same high-school ballet class in Florida.

In February 2024, he spoke to Men's Health and recalled how nervous he was to talk to her, saying: "After the millionth time of us sitting next to each other, inches away, tying our shoes — so now it's super awkward — I was like, 'So, I heard you ice-skate'"

Although the pair broke up after one summer, Catherine told the " The Road to Wisdom " podcast that they later reconnected when Ritchson came to Miami as a model while she was at college.

The couple tied the knot in 2006 and have been together ever since. Their first son, Calem, was born in 2012, and his brother Edan was born a year later in 2013. They had a third son, Amory, in 2015.

Alan Ritchson is 6 feet 3 inches tall, but 6 feet 5 inches in “Reacher”

One of the most recognizable things about Ritchson in "Reacher" is his towering stature. He looks like a giant compared to some of the villains in the series.

Ritchson is 6 feet 3 inches tall. But when speaking to Kinowetter in 2022, he said he wore boots on the show that added an extra two inches.

The character is 6 feet 5 inches in the books by Lee Child, so at least the show is committed to being accurate.

Ritchson wrote a letter to Tom Cruise before starring in “Reacher”

The Amazon series isn't the first time that Lee Child's books have been brought to the screen. In 2012, Tom Cruise played the role in the "Jack Reacher" movie before reprising the role in its 2015 sequel: "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back."

Fans weren't pleased with the casting considering the character's towering stature. In January 2024, Ritchson told "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" that he wrote a letter to Cruise about stepping into his shoes when he was cast in the series.

"This guy still did two movies that grossed over $300 million and brought so many eyes to this series," Ritchson added. "We would not have the success that we have without it. So out of gratitude, I write him a loving, heartfelt letter, a page-long letter, and I give it to Don Granger, a partner of his at Skydance."

"'I think we should give this to him, I want him to know I'm grateful he's passing the torch and all that,'" Ritchson added.

But Granger, who is also a producer on "Reacher," decided not to give Cruise the letter, saying that the star had moved on.

"He said, 'We're not going to give it to him. It's a terrible idea. He's fine with it because he's moved on in life. He's moved on, and you need to move on, too.'"

Ritchson auditioned to play Thor but didn’t take it seriously

A decade ago, Ritchson started landing bigger roles in Hollywood movies like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and " The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ." But his rise to fame could've been much quicker if he had taken a Marvel audition more seriously.

In the Men's Health profile, Ritchson remembered auditioning to play Thor in the 2011 movie. He explained that he thought he would get the role if he looked the part.

"I didn't take it seriously," Ritchson said. "I was like, 'They'll throw me the part if I look like the guy; nobody really cares about acting.'"

As Marvel fans will know, that wasn't the case, and Chris Hemsworth was cast as the God of Thunder.

He also told Jimmy Kimmel he filmed a fake storyline for "American Idol" season three

In 2003 Ritchson appeared on "American Idol" but was cut during the second round. He recalled the experience on his "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" appearance in January.

He explained that the producers also sneakily got him to film a fake storyline.

Ritchson noted that he was asked to film a segment with a female model about how they were enjoying their time filming "American Idol."

He recalled: "I was like, 'Oh my god, that's amazing [to get] screen time. So within 10 minutes of being at the hotel in Los Angeles, I'm down at the pool in my board shorts and they're like, 'Why don't you sit in the hot tub, we'll ask you a couple questions.'"

However, this was cut together with clips of host Ryan Seacrest looking for Ritchson during a songwriting task, to make it look like the actor wasn't taking the competition seriously.

"They have Ryan Seacrest running around asking people where Alan and Tina, or whoever the model was." He added: "And then they cut to us in the pool splashing around like we're just… What the hell!"

He lost out to Brenton Thwaites to play Robin in “Titans,” but still won the role of Hawk

When speaking to Men's Health, Ritchson also touched on his audition to play the DC vigilante, Robin, in the " Titans " TV series for HBO Max.

After the audition, the actor originally felt like the role was his, saying: "I was so confident. I was like, 'This is the best damn audition I've ever had in my life. There's no way they can do this show without me.'"

Per Men's Health, Ritchson we so convinced that he bought a Tesla to celebrate, but Brenton Thwaites was cast as Robin.

It's worth noting that the star did land a supporting role on "Titans" as Hank Hall, who suits up as fellow vigilante Hawk.

He caught a criminal while he was on a date with his wife

Ritchson's public personality has seemingly fused with "Reacher" because it relies on his physicality in the role. Still, he took that further when he stopped a man from breaking into someone's car in Montreal.

During an interview with ETalk in early 2024, the actor recalled the incident and explained that he was out on a date with his wife when the couple spotted someone breaking into a parked car.

"I saw somebody—we were on a date in Montreal, walking to a very nice dinner, all dressed up, and we saw somebody breaking into a car," Ritchson said. "She put it together before I did because it was just hanging out with glass everywhere, like, [going] through somebody's stuff."

The star then admitted that he chased the perpetrator for four blocks before catching him and waiting for the authorities.

"She goes, 'I think he's breaking into that car,' and I was like, 'By gosh, I think you're right'. And she goes: 'Don't do it.' And I was like—instant Reacher mode," he continued. "Some justice has to be done here, and I chased that dude like four blocks until I tossed them into a building, and the cops came."

Ritchson added: "She was very, very mad at me for not just taking her on our date. You know, we got there eventually."

Ritchson used testosterone therapy before "Reacher" season two

"Reacher" fans might have noticed that Ritchson bulked up considerably for the second season of the show, and when he spoke to Men's Health about his training, the star said he used testosterone therapy.

He explained that the physical toll of training for the first season, as well as a demanding shooting schedule, meant that he was exhausted. Once Ritchson had wrapped the series, he said he was "utterly fatigued and broken."

During the break between the two seasons, his doctor recommended that he try testosterone replacement therapy, which would also help him add muscle mass.

Ritchson noted that some have criticized it as "steroids with a doctor's note." But, he said, he still works out five times a week to work on his physique.

He added: "I didn't even know that it was considered an anabolic steroid to some people. It was just: There was a hormone that was missing for me, and I needed it."

Ritchson has spoken openly about having bipolar disorder

The star also told Men's Health that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2019 when he was 36. The condition affects a person's mood, and can cause depression, as well as emotional highs and fatigue.

During a lengthy conversation with Man of Metropolis back in 2022, he explained the difficulties of living with bipolar, saying: "I'm bipolar. I wasn't diagnosed until just a few years ago, but when you're bipolar, you have no perspective as to how you're doing every moment. That's what's so difficult about it."

"If I'm having a moment where I'm getting incredibly frustrated by whatever stimulation there is or the conversation that might seem completely normal to me and in my head, I'm justified for feeling this way, and I'm going to make sure everybody knows," he added."

Ritchson also praised his wife for helping him stay balanced and to keep on top of taking his medication.

"My wife would ask me if I took my medication. She's my barometer. She helps me look into the mirror, and then she's always been that way well before we knew I was bipolar," he continued.

"She knows when I need help adjusting to the amount of stimulation. She's always been the one person on Earth who if she tells me I'm not doing something right, I reflect."

He also opened up about a suicide attempt

Ritchson also spoke about his suicide attempt in 2022 when he appeared on Michael Rosenbaum's "Inside of You" podcast , and talked about trying to hang himself.

He said it came after somebody attempted to blackmail him, threatening to ruin his career.

"It's still hard to think about the fact that, like, I would do something like that to myself, especially with kids," the actor said.

"But I now understand what it's like when people are like, 'I don't understand why they would kill themselves.'" Ritchson continued: "I'm like, I can tell you from experience they thought they were giving the world a gift."

He added: "I thought I was doing my family and my community a favor because I was such a mess."

He's right... but also a little harsh.

It’s kind of funny seeing how Lee Child’s Jack Reacher stories are  succeeding on Amazon Prime Video , because when Hollywood took a shot at adapting the stories, they crashed and burned after only one winning feature. The streaming series Reacher is currently in production on Reacher Season 3 , with viewers praising the approach to the material, and the casting of Alan Ritchson in the lead role. So, what went wrong with the movies, which had Tom Cruise in the lead (and should have worked better than they did)? If you ask Ed Zwick, the director of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , he’ll tell you that he was the problem . 

Ed Zwick has written a terrific book about his film career called Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions . It’s a terrific tell-all about some major movies we grew up on, and eventually, Zwick gets to his contribution to the Jack Reacher film series. Zwick took over for Christopher McQuarrie , who actually turned Jack Reacher into a formidable adaptation of the Lee Child book One Shot . And when opening up about the experience in the book , Zwick revealed:

‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,’ which Tom Cruise and I made in 2016, fizzled at the box office. I blame myself (and my willing accomplice, Don Granger) for thinking the audience might enjoy a mash-up of ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘Paper Moon,’ when in fact they just wanted more red meat. I had a wonderful time working with Cobie Smulders, and I certainly don’t blame Tom for not being six two — as the novelist Lee Child described his protagonist — and should Tom happen to call about making a third movie together, I’ll definitely pick up.

The Jack Reacher series started behind the eight ball because die-hard fans of the novels instantly thought Tom Cruise was wrong to play the part. Reacher, as we can now see in Alan Ritchson , is meant to be a 6-foot-5 giant – a mountain of a man who deals with problems as bluntly, intensely, and physically as possible. Cruise is ideal for Ethan Hunt. He;s not Jack Reacher. 

Also, as Ed Zwick notes, there’s no real room for nuance in the Reacher stories. He calls it “red meat,” but really, fans of the stories just want hard-hitting action. This is why Alan Ritchson always looks like he has been through the wringer when he shares set visit photos , or talks about the demanding physical nature of the part. 

Not that he’s complaining much… unless you talk to him about filming in Canada . Then he might have some choice words. If you forget what Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back looked like, revisit this trailer.

And then go rewatch the first two seasons of Reacher , on Amazon Prime Video, while we wait for news on the eventual Reacher Season 3. However, there are many pitfalls to avoid when taking on a work and a character as well-known as Jack Reacher , including keeping all the fans happy.

When Lee Child, the author of the Jack Reacher books, first published the original novel Killing Floor in 1997, the franchise soon blossomed into a classic of the action-adventure genre. Jack Reacher is characterized by his enormous stature and imposing physical presence. The character stands at 6'5" in the books and is supposed to be built like a tank, able to withstand anything. While Cruise's presence can be intimidating, he's 5'7", which is a big enough change for it to affect not just perception, but the story itself.

For those keeping up with the books, Reacher 's next book reveals a lot about season 3's story , which is half the fun of reading and watching along. Unfortunately, film is rarely as effective at adapting books because there isn't enough time to explore the written story's details and minor plot points.

A series has many episodes to go off on tangents and side quests that ultimately support the main plot. Cruise's Jack Reacher movies jumped around in their plotting and were more dedicated to creating a spectacle than following the novels closely. While that's common for movie adaptations, it's a letdown in meeting audience expectations. It's the small subtle moments that make Reacher into the legend he is, and the movies don’t spend enough time getting to know him.

Cruise was not only the star but also a producer on his Jack Reacher series, and indulging in casting himself as the lead was perhaps a step too far. However, seeing him get to be the hero in yet another franchise was overkill and lost some goodwill with the audience. Supporting a project that feels more like vanity than a heartfelt portrayal of the source material can sour franchise potential.

While violence, criminal activities, and dangerous activities are prominent parts of both the TV series and the movies, the film's spin on the stakes was too high and not light enough. The series is by no means light, but it is aware that Reacher's actions and abilities aren't always rooted in reality, and that's okay. Part of what makes Jack Reacher so successful is that it's a fantasy, and it can be just as gritty as it is hilarious. Cruise has comedic timing, but he often opts for an air that's too suave for Reacher.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was always doomed , according to director, Edward Zwick. Though there were plenty of missteps, both in and out of production, the biggest flaw was that the book that was chosen to adapt, Never Go Back , didn't tell a story audiences were interested in. The most popular Reacher stories involve him being a lone wolf and his many journies across the country. In Never Go Back , Reacher is more emotionally tied down than ever, which wasn't helped by the fact that the creative team behind the sequel wasn't as strong as the original.

5 Inconsistent Direction

Christopher McQuarrie is a long-time collaborator with Cruise, and when they partnered on the first Jack Reacher, it was a relative success. However, McQuarrie didn't come back for the sequel, which effectively killed any chance at future iterations. The difference between the first and second films was palpable, making the sequel feel like a poorly rendered ripoff instead of a fluid continuation of the story. Franchises are powered by originality in their many sequels and spinoffs but also by consistency of quality. The wrong director can easily ruin the potential of popular IP.

4 It Relies On The Popularity Of The Books

Part of the draw of the movies was their connection to the books, and that should be acknowledged, but there are plenty of audience members unfamiliar with the books that were being introduced to Jack Reacher and his stories in the films. The films assumed that audiences would have preexisting knowledge of the stories and connections to the franchise. This wasn't the case, and the assumption ended up alienating some audience members. Starting the first book in the series instead of One Shot , a more recent installment could have helped solve this.

3 The Plots Were Formulaic

No innovative action sequences were utilized..

Reacher is celebrated for his ability to take on multiple opponents at once and never back down from a fight. While there are plenty of fight scenes in Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , a collection of action sequences doesn't necessarily make a compelling plot. Due to the nature of the adaptations, many of the character motivations and backstories are left underdeveloped. Additionally, there was little mystery about how the films were going to end. Of course, Reacher was going to come out victorious, but that ending is only satisfying because of the journey.

2 Cruise’s Legacy Drew Focus Away From The Story

He's almost too popular to play characters with their own histories..

Not only does Cruise have a varied and prolific history, but the films he's been in are high-profile, and the public is very aware of him. Tom Cruise's best movies aren't just known for their craft but for being part of what created the figure of Cruise. When a star becomes this big, it’s difficult to separate them from their character. Watching the movies doesn't feel like watching Jack Reacher, but watching Cruise under the mask of Reacher. Every actor puts their own spin on their characters, but Reacher has plenty of existing characterization in the books without him.

1 Alan Ritchson Is A Better Reacher

Alan Ritchson, who plays Jack Reacher in the new show, is a better fit for the character, and not just because of his size. Ritchson isn't an unknown actor, but he doesn't have the star power of Cruise, so he seamlessly slips into the role. Additionally, his comedic timing elevates the dialogue and is closer to how Reacher acts in the books. While the series is an all-around better adaptation than the movies, it's in large part thanks to Ritchson, as he anchors the show and makes Reacher feel more like a real person than in the Jack Reacher films.

It's all about how UK's Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the author of the James Bond series, Ian Fleming , kick-started their own secret World War II squad . This group is all about unconventional and unorthodox warfare — taking the fight to the Germans in surprising ways, which helped shift the tide of the war, becoming a sort of precursor to the Black Ops squads we'd see in modern warfare. The crew was a tight-knit group, fully aware they might not make it out alive, and knew the government would never admit they existed. But, despite the odds, they pulled off some major wins against the Nazis, using a mix of sneaky tricks and outright aggression.

"The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" refers to a term often associated with the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) , which was formed during World War II. The SOE was a secret organization tasked with conducting espionage, sabotage, and reconnaissance in occupied Europe (and, to a lesser extent, in Southeast Asia) against the Axis powers, primarily Nazi Germany. It was established in 1940 by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Minister of Economic Warfare Hugh Dalton , with the directive to "set Europe ablaze" by supporting resistance movements and carrying out covert operations behind enemy lines.

What We Know About 'Reacher' Season 3

Production of the eagerly anticipated third season of Prime Video's Reacher has been underway for a number of weeks in Toronto. Already a huge hit for Amazon , the next season will be adapting another Lee Child novel about the man with the Thanksgiving turkey-sized fists , with Ritchson set to lead in an adaptation of Persuader. In this novel, the reader sees Reacher inadvertently witnessing an attempted kidnapping and heroically trying to prevent it, leading him into a complex operation with the DEA. The goal of the operation is to infiltrate the criminal activities of a trafficker named Zachary Beck (who will be played by Anthony Michael Hall ), who operates from a heavily fortified lakeside mansion. Maria Sten 's Frances Neagley also reprises her role as Reacher's best friend and confidante from the first two seasons. There is currently no release date for Reacher Season 3. The first two seasons are streaming now on Prime Video .

Reacher Season 3: Expected Release, Plot, Cast & News

Jack Reacher – admired by men for his rugged independence and revered by women for his charm and, frankly, sinful good looks. This version of Reacher hits the sweet spot that Tom Cruise didn't quite manage with his portrayal (not his fault, though!) and the mysterious ex-major is now one of Amazon's most iconic characters. Reacher's Returning Cast

What would Reacher be without the man himself, Alan Ritchson ? Nothing, I say! Obviously, he'll return to pick up the lead role again, just to make me happy – so kind of him. Also at his side once again will be Maria Sten as Frances Neagley.

Additions to the cast are Sonya Cassidy and Anthony Michael Hall , as announced by Amazon. Cassidy will play Susan Duffy, a witty, clever and tough DEA agent – could that be someone Reacher shows some more interest in than a strict business acquaintance...?

Hall has been cast as Zachary Beck, a widowed and pretty successful businessman and single father to his adult son Richard. Jack Reacher needs to take a closer look at him because his rug import company seems to cover up some shady business.

The Source Material & Plot For Reacher's Third Season

The upcoming third season of Reacher is based on the seventh book of Lee Child's series: Persuader . Without giving too much away, here's what's to come.

Following an unexpected run-in with a former foe, R eacher is once again fuelled by revenge and sets out to settle a decade-old vendetta. In dire straits, Reacher infiltrates a criminal organization and has to use his cunning and experience once again to stay undercover to get his vengeance.
