Schaffhausen may not be top of mind when thinking about places to visit on a trip to Switzerland, but it absolutely should be.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

This small historic town in northern Switzerland has plenty of charm and a surprising amount of attractions. With Renaissance period architecture, a lovely riverside location, close proximity to Switzerland’s largest waterfall, and opportunities for outdoor activities, Schaffhausen was a wonderful introduction to what I could expect on my first trip to Switzerland .

What to See and Do in Schaffhausen

Schaffhausen is small and doesn’t take long to explore, so even if you only have one day in Schaffhausen, there’s still time to do a side trip out of the city.

Here’s what I managed to see and do during my visit to Schaffhausen!

Wander Through Schaffhausen’s Medieval Old Town

Schaffhausen has a wonderful car-free Old Town that’s full of interesting details from fountain statues, intricately painted facades, decorated bay windows, and stone clock towers.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

I couldn’t help but be charmed by the architecture in Schaffhausen, since it’s so different from what I’m used to seeing in Canada. Designed as a show of wealth, the buildings in the Old Town are adorned with oriel windows (there are 171 of them), decorative window trim, and richly painted facades.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

The most visually stunning building in Schaffhausen’s Old Town is Haus zum Ritter (House of the Knight). The exterior features one of the most important Renaissance frescoes north of the Alps, a mural glorifying civil virtues. The original frescoes were removed in 1935 for preservation in the All Saints Museum, so the façade you see today is a recreation.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Another highlight of the Old Town is Fronwagplatz, a central square and popular meeting place for the locals. Sidewalk cafes and shops frame the square, but what I liked best was the historical statues that stand prominently over the public fountains. Like everywhere in Switzerland, it’s safe to drink the water from the city fountains.

Enjoy the Views from Munot Fortress

As a symbol of the city, the Munot is a must-see when in Schaffhausen. This 16 th century round fortress is built on a hill overlooking the Old Town and is the best vantage point for admiring the city and surrounding landscape.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

The Munot is surrounded by a small vineyard and a moat, which instead of being filled with water, is now home to a family of fallow deer. Interestingly, the stag of the group is always named after the city’s current mayor. What an unusual honour!

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

There’s not much on display inside the fortress, but once you walk up the curved ramp to the top, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping view of the Rhine River and Schaffhausen’s Old Town. I loved the view so much that I climbed to the top of the fortress three times during my trip to Schaffhausen!

Stop and Smell the Roses at Munot Rose Garden

Across from the Munot is a small rose garden where you can continue to enjoy views of Schaffhausen while savouring the fragrant, sweet smell of flowers.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

There are approximately 170 species of roses surrounded by hedges and trees, making the garden a peaceful place to sit and rest before continuing my self-guided tour of Schaffhausen.

Walk and Dine Along the River

After visiting the Munot, I headed down to the Rhine to take a short walk along the waterfront.

This was my favourite place to photograph the Munot because I could see how the vineyard nicely contrasted with the imposing stone fortress looming over the town houses. I kept thinking it was a scene fit for a postcard!

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Later that night I came back to the riverside to have dinner at Güterhof, a restored warehouse that’s now home to a restaurant, café, cocktail bar and lounge. Dining beside the Rhine, under the stars, was the perfect end to my day in Schaffhausen.

Visit the Abbey of Allerheiligen (All Saints Abbey)

This former Benedictine monastery is now a centre of history, art, and culture in Schaffhausen. The complex has a few different sites of interest, including the Allerheiligen Museum, a Romanesque church, herb garden, nobleman’s cemetery, and Switzerland’s largest cloister open to the public.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

I passed on visiting the museum, but did enjoy strolling down the cloister and seeing the Schiller Bell (Schillerglocke). The bell was cast in 1486, weighs an impressive 4.5 tonnes, and was used in Allerheiligen cathedral until 1895.

Admire the Rhine Falls

Having explored Schaffhausen’s small Old Town, I decided to catch a train to the nearby Rhine Falls.

At 150 metres wide and 23 metres tall, the Rhine Falls are the largest waterfall in Europe. In the summer, about 600,000 litres of water per second splash down to the Rheinfall basin, creating a light mist in the air.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Admittedly, when I first saw the falls I was a shocked that this was the largest waterfall in Europe because I’ve definitely seen bigger in Canada (it’s no Niagara Falls). Even though the Rhine Falls lacked that “wow” factor, it still was a scenic place to go for a walk.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

From the train station on the southern riverbank, I walked down a treed path to the water and got my first glimpse of the Rhine Falls. The vantage point was just okay, but had I wanted to pay, I could have accessed a viewing platform that was right beside the falls.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Next, I went up to Schloss Laufen, the cliff-top castle that overlooks the Rhine Falls. From there I walked across the bridge to the northern riverbank where there were much better views of the waterfall. I especially liked seeing how the water flowed past a large rock in the middle of the falls. If you want, you can even take a boat trip to this rock island and experience the falls from the viewing platform at the top.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

I continued walking all the way to Schlössli Wörth, a small castle where the Rhine Falls boat cruises leave from, before backtracking to the train station on the northern riverbank and returning to Schaffhausen.

Cycle to Stein am Rhein

If you have two days in Schaffhausen, I recommend renting a bike and cycling to Stein am Rhein, one of Switzerland’s best preserved medieval towns.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

The ride is easy and well marked (Rhein Route 2), travelling 17 km on mostly flat trails and roads, a portion of which is actually in Germany. The route roughly follows along the Rhine River and passes by some small towns, fields, vineyards, and forest.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

My favourite place along the cycle route from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein was Diessenhofen, a cute town on the other side of the river. From the bike path I got a nice view of the town’s church, some timber framed buildings, and a wooden covered bridge.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Once at Stein am Rhein, I took a walk around the medieval Old Town and admired the half-timbered houses and their elaborately painted facades.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Rathausplatz, the bustling town square, has some of the most beautiful buildings, but there were other interesting constructions scattered throughout the town, including the restored town gates. It was fun to simply wander the cobblestone streets and see what I could find!

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

After lunch you can ride back to Schaffhausen or return by boat, enjoying a relaxing cruise on the Rhine.

Final Thoughts About My Trip to Schaffhausen

I quickly fell in love with Schaffahusen and remember thinking from the top of the Munot that if the rest of Switzerland was anything like this, I knew I was going to have a great trip.

travelyesplease.com | 7 Wonderful Things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

There are many reasons why Schaffhausen stood out so much during my two weeks in Switzerland , apart from its obvious beauty. I enjoyed the architecture and easy access to cycling paths, the river, and Rhine Falls, but most of all I liked the atmosphere of the town and how happy I felt while I was there.

Tips for Visiting Schaffhausen

Getting There: Schaffhausen is a 50-60 minute train ride from Zurich’s airport.

Rhine Falls: The Rhine Falls is a 10 minute train ride from Schaffhausen. There are two stations you can choose to arrive at/leave from- Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall or Neuhausen Rheinfall. I recommend arriving at Schloss Laufen, walking across the river and down to the bottom of the falls, then leaving from Neuhausen Rheinfall.

  • Services and activities at the Rhine Falls include a visitor centre, history exhibit, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, boat cruises, viewing decks, walking trail, and an adventure park with rope courses.
  • It’s free to visit the falls, but you do have to pay to access the viewing platforms on the southern bank near Schloss Laufen (includes admission to the Historama exhibit). Boat cruises and the adventure park also cost extra.
  • Here are some tours to the Rhine Falls leaving from Zurich: Rhine Falls Coach Tour from Zurich , From Zurich- Stein am Rhein and Rhine Falls

Cycling from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein:  The bike ride to Stein am Rhein took me about 1 hour 15 minutes (one way). The path starts on the riverfront between the bridge and Güterhof. From here the ride is 17 kms. Follow the signs for Rhein Route 2.

Boat Cruises from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein: If you prefer to take a boat rather than cycle, there are cruises that do the round trip from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein (and beyond to Lake Constance). If you only want to cycle one way, you can bring your bike onboard the boat for a fee. For more information on the boat cruises on the Rhine, including a timetable and map visit this website.

  • Boat cruises are included in the Swiss Travel Pass . Here is a trusted, leading retailer where you can buy a Swiss Travel Pass .

Schaffhausen, Switzerland: Travel Guide

Although Schaffhausen has so much to offer, visitors often overlook this charming city with its superb examples of Renaissance architecture and head directly to the Rhine Falls. What a pity!

Its well-preserved and traffic-free historic old town, the beautiful location on the Rhine, and the Munot fortress with its vineyard looming above the city are visually pleasing. Meandering through the narrow lanes, admiring the architecture, the frescoed houses, and the beautiful squares with its fountains – Schaffhausen will transport you back in time.

The Rhine has been an important river highway since shipping became possible, and cargo was ferried all the way from the North Sea to Schaffhausen. The origins of Schaffhausen date back to around 1000, and the town quickly became a cargo depot. The river fright to Lake Constance was interrupted here due to the powerful rapids of the Rhine Falls.

The town became a city when Emperor Heinrich the III awarded Count of Nellenburg, founder of the Abbey Schaffhausen, the right to mint coins in 1045. The town’s history was dominated by war and the consonant alternation of rulers until Schaffhausen became a member of the Swiss Confederation in 1501.

The historic heart of Schaffhausen

Business and customs revenues enrich the city and its merchants. Today, Schaffhausen is one of the best-preserved cities in Switzerland since the Middle Ages, although the US military accidentally dropped 400 bombs on the city on April 1, 1944.

schaffhausen tourist information

One of the richly decorated Renaissance houses in Schaffhausen, the ‘House of the large cage’ The house “Zum grossen Käfig” – the house of the Large Cage.

Many townhouses have extensively painted facades. Wealthy merchants competed in adorning their houses with bay windows, then considered a status symbol – and an ideal place from which one could observe life in the streets in privacy. More than 170 of these oriel windows are still in their original state and adorn the houses built during the Renaissance.

More than 170 oriel windows adorn Schaffhausen’s houses Different shapes and sizes of typical Oriel Windows.

During that time, houses were given names rather than numbers, for example “Zum Süssen Winkel” (Sweet Corner), “Zur Oberen Zufriedenheit” (Higher Satisfaction”), “Haus zum grossen Käfig” (House of the Large Cage ), or “Haus zum Paradiesvogel” (Bird of Paradise House).

Schaffhausen fountains

Like everywhere in Switzerland, you can drink the water from the numerous fountains throughout the city. Each of the larger fountains is dedicated to a different historical figure or an event that happened in the past. Although Schaffhausen cannot compete with the historic fountains in Bern, they are not less exquisite. The richly decorated fountains are all found on squares while smaller and less decorative fountains are pushed back into lanes.

Haus zum Ritter

The most intricate fresco, praising the civil virtues, is the one on the “Haus zum Ritter”. It was originally created by Tobias Stimmer, a Swiss artist born in Schaffhausen in 1539. To preserve his work, the frescoes were taken off the façade and can now be seen in the “Museum zu Allerheiligen” (Klosterstrasse 16). The Artist Carl Roesch of nearby Diessenhofen recreated them masterfully on the “Haus zum Ritter” (House of the Knight – Vordergasse 65).

Haus zum Goldenen Ochsen

This is a history rich house and one of the grandest in Schaffhausen. It was one of the earliest inns in town. The largest mural just above the bay window depicts the Golden Ox, the symbol of the house. Between the windows are figures from Babylon and ancient Greece. The entrance to the left and the oriel window are richly decorated with sculptures.

Fronwagplatz

The main shopping lanes end at this intimate square in the middle of the old town, and it is a favorite meeting place for locals. Fronwag square is a popular venue for events too, such as the speech for National Day on August 1st – or like here, Advent celebrations with a large Christmas tree.

Here are two of Schaffhausen’s most beautiful fountains; at one end the Landsknechtbrunnen, the Mercenary fountain with four big spouts, and at the other end the Mohrenbrunnen – dedicated to the youngest of the three Magi. However, locals affectionately call this fountain “Joggel”, referring to one of the wealthiest city merchants.

The Fronwag tower (behind the carousel) features an astronomical clock by Joachim Habrecht, dated 1564. On top of the tower you can see the small bell of the “Burg Balm”, a reconstruction of the original bell which was destroyed during a dispute between the inhabitants of Schaffhausen and the Austrians in 1449.

Munot Fortress

schaffhausen tourist information

Undoubtedly, the 16th century Munot Fortress catches the visitors’ eye. The city’s landmark with its characteristic round shape was mostly built by Schaffhausen citizens in feudal labor. It took them 25 years. The Munot fortress lost its military importance at the beginning of the 19th century and fell in despair, in fact, it became a query. Thankfully, Jakob Beck, an art teacher, founded the Munot Association which was responsible for the restoration. The Association also takes care of the vineyard and the deer in the moat around the tower.

Nowadays, the Munot serves as an urban venue and cultural center. The Association also organizes summer Saturday night dances with live music.

Boss of the Munot since 1377 is the watchman. He ensured the communication and was responsible for the reporting station until 1926. Nowadays, the Munot Watchmen cares for its upkeep and attends to the tourists. And each night at exactly nine o’clock he’s ringing the Munot bell which bears the date 1589. For the first time, the position of the Munotwachtman will be held by a woman, starting in May 2017.

Every 5 years the Munot opens its door over a weekend, including the historic Armory and the Roman tower.

The Munot rose garden is bordered off from the pathways by low-growing box hedges. Approx. 170 species grow here, and the pergola makes a fitting completion to the scene.

Abbey and Museum Allerheiligen

The Benedictine Abbey complex with its impressive basilica and “Museum zu Allerheiligen” is a lively center of art, cultural and natural history, archeology including a permanent exhibition of early advanced civilizations.

The cloister – partly Romanesque and partly Gothic – the romantic cemetery where high ranking magistrates have been buried between 1582 and 1874, the idyllic Herb Garden and the atrium with the Schiller Bell invite you to linger.

Where to eat

There are lovely street cafés throughout the city where you can get a bite to eat. A myriad of restaurants cater to all tastes and preferences:

Café Vordergasse – Vordergasse 79:

Decadent desserts in a romantic and nostalgic ambiance? This tearoom serves breakfast, light lunches, smoothies/lassies, and the proverbial Birchermüesli. And of course, a variety of teas, coffees and hot chocolates. Pedestrian zone. Outdoor seating. Open every day. www.vordergasse.ch

ABACO – Safrangasse 2:

A coffee or hot chocolate, Thai food or just some ice cream and delicious in-house made chocolate in a lovely atmosphere – inside and outside seating. Closed Sunday. www.abaco.ch

Wii am Rii – Fischerhäuserstrasse 57:

Small cozy bistro – the name implies “Wine on the Rhine” – uniquely decorated by the two owners who have a great passion for genuine hospitality. One main dish, small extra menu. Freshly prepared with only the best ingredients. Some call it the “loveliest Beizli” in the world (smallest of the smallest restaurants). Call for reservations. Slow food. Bring time. And you get seconds! Cash only. Closed Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. www.wiiamrii.ch

Sommerlust – Rheinhaldenstrasse 8:

A fancy take-out. No ordinary fast food here, instead freshly prepared take-away meals such as tarte flambée, sandwiches, pasta, salads, ice teas, juices and coffee. Closed Sunday.

The Carcajou also has a summer residence directly on the Rhine – Gründenstrasse 31 – about 10 minutes’ walk from the city center via Rhine Bridge. The food truck serves delicious small meals in a garden setting close to the “Flurlingen Badi”, a small sand beach on the Rhine – bring your bathing suit.

Güterhof – Freier Platz 10:

I will mention this restaurant because it sits pretty directly on the Rhine near the boat landing. Nice to people watch. Unfortunately, my experience was not the best, and more than once I have to say. Slow, relatively unfriendly and on the expensive side. They do have a sushi bar. Open every day. www.gueterhof.ch

There is so much to explore in Schaffhausen in terms of culture, nature, economy, and history. Because of its strategic location, Schaffhausen has become an important hub for goods transit among vessels crossing the border.

Schaffhausen’s Blauburgunderland is renowned for its exquisite Pinot Noir grapes and scenic vineyards. The city’s confident spirit is exemplified by its flag, which features a powerful black ram with impressive horns.

Exploring the city center of Schaffhausen is an unexpectedly delightful experience, surpassing my initial expectations of its beauty. It evoked memories of nearby places like Stein am Rhein , with its charmingly painted buildings that appear straight out of a fairytale, and the enchanting Appenzell .

Schaffhausen exudes a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Here you will find information about Schaffhausen, its history, as well as things to see and do in the region.

Whether you’re looking for a 1-day itinerary or a list of things to do in Schaffhausen, this article is for you. Here are a few ideas for how you can spend one day in Schaffhausen , Switzerland .

Schaffhausen One Day Itinerary: What can you do?

1.  start your day with a cozy breakfast.

In case your hotel doesn’t offer a breakfast option, you can walk around Schaffhausen to find a cafe . There are several cafes and restaurants that serve hot coffee with delicious pastries. Some options are the following:

  • Café Vordergasse (Vordergasse 79, 8200 Schaffhausen) – A wonderful café in the heart of the old town that has a wonderful breakfast selection of Birchermüesli, bread, yogurt, cheese, and eggs. On Saturdays, breakfast is served until 1:00 PM.
  • Focaccia Puglia (Zur Stahlgiesserei 8, 8200 Schaffhausen) – You’ll find wonderful focaccia bread here, as well as Italian beverages, Italian espresso, and even sauces in jars.
  • Reber Schaffhauserzungen AG Confiserie und Café (Vordergasse 21, 8200 Schaffhausen) – A café that serves the original Reber Schaffhausen tongues, as well as cakes, pralinés, hot chocolates, coffee, and anything sweet. In summer, they have a couple of tables located in front of the shop in the pedestrian zone.

During autumn and the Advent season, there is a specialty in Schaffhausen called Osterfinger Wiigueteli that you can discover. These are “wine” cookies, infused with cloves, cinnamon, sandalwood, and sugar, and are best enjoyed alongside a glass of local Schaffhausen Blauburgunder wine.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the Old Town and immerse yourself in its captivating charm.

2. Discover the Old Town of Schaffhausen

schaffhausen tourist information

Schaffhausen is a picturesque city renowned for its notable attractions such as the Festung Munot and its impressive 171 bay windows . Nearby is Europe’s largest waterfall, the Rhine Falls .

Did you know? The Munotglöggli is the tower bell of the Festung Munot, and it chimes every evening at 9:00 PM courtesy of the Munot Guard for a duration of five minutes. This historic bell is one of the last hand-rung alarm clocks in Switzerland, and perhaps even in Europe. Aside from signaling the closing of the city gates, it also ends the serving hours in the taverns.

Here are some of the best places to visit in the Old Town of Schaffhausen :

schaffhausen tourist information

  • Haus zum Ritter (Vordergasse 65) – My favorite building in Schaffhausen. Haus zum Ritter is one of the most beautiful townhouses in Schaffhausen. Rebuilt in 1566, it has a painted facade directed by Tobias Stimmer (1568-1570) and Carl Roesch (1943). This is probably the most significant Renaissance fresco north of the Alps.
  • Münster zu Allerheiligen – The Romanesque-style Münster built in 1100 together with the Münster Tower built in 1200 are both worth a visit. The Münster Tower is one of the most beautiful towers in Switzerland.
  • Haus zum Grossen Käfig (Vorstadt 43) – Another beautiful building, it is named after the cage tower which used to stand in its place.
  • Herrenacker – Herrenacker is the largest square in Schaffhausen. While it was not in use while we were there, it is sometimes the location of annual events or concerts.

  • Herrenstube (Frogwanplatz 3) – As shown in the upper picture, Herrenstube is the pink house built in 1748. It is Schaffhausen’s most distinguished society house with a late Baroque facade, reserved for the Schaffhausen nobility. It is located beside Frogwanturm.
  • Frogwanturm (Frogwanplatz 4) – As shown in the upper picture beside the Herrenstube, the Frogwanturm shows a large astronomical clock by Joachim Habrecht that dates back to 1564. It shows the hours, days of the week, course of the moon, rising and setting of the moon, position of the sun, seasons, days and nights, lunar nodes, eclipses, and aspects between the sun and moon. 1
  • Frogwanplatz – Huge space in the old town used for market stalls or gatherings. There is a sword fountain here named Kaspar, the youngest of the three wise men.

schaffhausen tourist information

  • Tellenbrunnen (Vordergasse) – You can find Tellenbrunnen near the Reformed Church of St. Johann. This is a figure of William Tell, the symbol of the free Swiss. It is an octagonal pool dated 1632.
  • St. Johann Reformed Church (Kirchhofplatz 7) – A few steps away from the William Tell statue is the Reformed Church of St. Johann.

Before you leave the Old Town, I recommend visiting the Museum zu Allerheiligen , which is an interesting museum in its own right. Consider visiting the IWC Museum instead if you are a fan of watches.

3.   Visit the Museum zu Allerheiligen

schaffhausen tourist information

The tour of Schaffhausen’s Old Town can be completed by visiting Museum zu Allerheiligen . While it might sound like a boring museum, I promise it is quite interesting. This unique museum offers insights into Schaffhausen’s archeology, history, culture, and nature.

The museum contains traces of its past as a monastery . Additionally, you’ll learn about Kesslerloch and the artifacts that archeologists have discovered in this prehistoric cave near Schaffhausen.

schaffhausen tourist information

Kesslerloch is a prehistoric cave located near Schaffhausen . It holds archaeological significance as it has been a site of important discoveries, including artifacts and remains from the Paleolithic era.

The Kesslerloch Cave provides valuable insights into the early human history of the region and contributes to our understanding of prehistoric cultures and their way of life.

Before you head over to Rhine Falls , I suggest that you go up to the Munot Fortress and enjoy the views of the city.

4. Climb the Munot Fortress

schaffhausen tourist information

The Munot Fortress is an impressive city fortification in Schaffhausen. It towers above the city so you get a nice panoramic view of the old town from here. Built by the residents of Schaffhausen from 1564 to 1589, it is a circular bastion that stands free on all sides. It is surrounded by a moat for all-round defense.

After climbing the Munot Fortress and enjoying the views, you might want to consider having lunch before heading over to the Rhine Falls.

5. Enjoy Lunch in Schaffhausen

schaffhausen tourist information

You might want to consider eating lunch in Schaffhausen first before heading over to the Rhine Falls . In case you are looking for a place to enjoy a delicious meal beforehand, consider stopping by Restaurant La Piazza . We have been here on two separate occasions and found it great due to its expansive outdoor seating area and delectable cuisine.

6. Walk to Rhine Falls from Schaffhausen

schaffhausen tourist information

I recommend walking from Schaffhausen to Rhine Falls . This is a relatively easy walk that will take you between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on your speed.

Essentially, you can walk alongside the Rhine River . You will follow the Rhine River as you walk to the Rhine Falls. The trail is extremely well-marked, and if the weather is nice, you might be joined by other groups or families.

If you would like to read more about Rhine Falls in detail, you can check out these two articles:

  • Rhine Falls and How to Get There

Upon reaching the Rhine Falls, I highly recommend taking the boat ride . We did it and enjoyed it a lot.

7. Take a Boat Ride in Rhine Falls

schaffhausen tourist information

In my experience, I found it better to take a ride on one of the boats compared to just walking around to take pictures of Rhine Falls . My photos do not capture the sheer power and force of the waterfalls, especially when you are near them with a boat. Also, the boat ride was relatively inexpensive.

Several routes are available, so you can choose one that suits you. Having tried it twice already, I enjoyed it both times.

Here is an overview of the boat trips around Rhine Falls:

Tickets for boats 1, 2, 4, and 5 can be purchased online from www.maendli.ch , while tickets for boat 3 can be purchased from www.schiffmaendli.ch .

If you’re considering booking a boat ride, you have another convenient option available. You can also book it via GetYourGuide , and the best part is that it costs the same. If you’re interested, you can easily secure your booking by clicking here – Neuhausen am Rheinfall: 30-Minute Rhine Falls Boat Tour .

Where is Schaffhausen?

Map of Switzerland showing location of Schaffhausen

The canton of Schaffhausen is the most northerly canton of Switzerland and is situated along the German border. It forms part of the Upper Rhine region, and the principal town bears the same name as the canton. This guide covers both the town and the attractions of the canton.

Positioned between Lake Constance and the Black Forest, both canton and town have much to offer visitors.

From the picturesque Old Town and imposing Munot castle to the winemaking regions, the area was first settled due to the fact that the Rhine Falls could not be navigated by boat. This first caused merchants to unload and store their items in this part of northernmost Switzerland.

Schaffhausen is characterised by the waters of the River Rhine and Falls and the hilly, fertile landscapes that create the perfect conditions for winemaking. It’s a great place for those who love to sail, sample wine, walk, discover history or cycle.

Top things to do in Schaffhausen

If you’re wondering what to do in Schaffhausen, this list of the top 10 things to do in Schaffhausen, Switzerland should provide you with a little inspiration.

When planning your list of what to see in Schaffhausen, the Old Town ( Altstadt Schaffhausen) should be top of your list. It is one of the best places to visit in Schaffhausen thanks to its twisting network of winding alleys and beautiful buildings with extravagantly decorated facades and frescoes.

It’s here that you will also see Schaffhausen’s 171 original oriel windows – the most in any town in Switzerland – so don’t forget to look up when you’re wandering along the car-free lanes.

The Old Town is rich in Gothic and Baroque architecture and as well as the oriel windows, other highlights include intricate merchant’s homes, lavish guild houses, pastel painted buildings, numerous fountains and St. Johann church, which dates back to around the year 1000 AD.

Also worth a visit is the Fronwag Tower ( Fronwagturm ) which features an astronomical clock with ten different functions. It can be found in Fronwagplatz, a traffic-free square in the heart of the Old Town where locals meet to shop and socialise at one of the many cafes and restaurants.

The kids’ area is suitable for children aged from four to seven. There are 14 obstacle courses in all, as well as a 13 metre free fall, a giant pendulum, a 460 metre cable car ride known as the ‘Panorama Express’ and various jumps.

As safety harnesses and carabiners are in use, this is a stress-free way to enjoy a thrilling ride over some beautiful sights.

Must try in Schaffhausen

Don’t leave Schaffhausen without trying the local Schaffhauserzungen. Literally translated as Schaffhauser tongues, this culinary delight should please any sweet-toothed travellers. The treat comprises an oval almond and hazelnut biscuit containing a buttercream filling.

First created in 1886, the original Schaffhauser zungen is made only by Schaffhauser Confiserie Reber, a protected Swiss brand. You’ll find the store, which also sells lots of other delicious treats, in Vordergasse.

The origins of the zungen name are uncertain – it could be down to the oval, slightly tongue-like shape or the fact that the treat simply ‘melts on the tongue’.

If you prefer savoury over sweet, be sure to try Bölletünne, an onion tart that is a specialty of the region. This quiche-like dish can be found on most local menus.

Visitors to Schaffhausen should also sample the local wines. The area is well known for its quality wine production and whilst there are both red and white grape varieties grown, pinot noir is the dominant variety.

Around 28 hectares of vines are grown around Schaffhausen and nearby Reiat, continuing a local tradition that stretches back to the Middle Ages.

There are numerous wine experiences that can be enjoyed in the region and the local wines can be savoured at the many local restaurants.

A city of about 37,000, Schaffhausen was from the early Middle Ages on an important depot for river cargoes, which—because of the rapids and waterfall farther along—had to be unloaded there. The name Schaffhausen is probably derived from the skiff houses along the riverbank. The city has a small but beautiful Altstadt (Old Town), whose charm lies in its extraordinary preservation; examples of late-Gothic, baroque, and rococo architecture line the streets. Though the town can sometimes feel like a museum, these buildings are very much in use, often as shops or restaurants, and lively crowds of shoppers and strollers throng the streets. Many streets (including Vorstadt, Fronwagplatz, Vordergasse, and Unterstadt) are pedestrian-only.

Schaffhausen Regional Nature Park

The Schaffhausen Region has a unique, traditional cultural landscape. The Randen hills, the vast vineyards, and the Rhine, define this region.

Description

The varied topography dotted with valleys, south faces, the Randen plateau and the landscape along the Rhine, has created an extraordinary variety of living space that can be explored on foot, by bicycle or boat. Interspersed in the landscape are numerous unique villages and towns with half-timbered houses that are typical of the region. The Nature Park is defined not only by the beautiful natural scenery, but also by a multifaceted cultural life in ten communities (about 14,000 inhabitants). The park has an area of 161 square kilometers. Unique in Switzerland is the fact that the park perimeter goes beyond the country's borders. Two communities are located on Germany’s sovereign territory. Innovative projects in the areas of commerce, agriculture and tourism contribute to the vision that further development of the regional economy does not happen at the expense of future generations, but that the natural environment is recognized and respected as the basis of economic activity.

The news listed here is maintained by the regional / local tourist offices, which is why Switzerland Tourism can not guarantee the content.

Nestled in the hilly countryside between north and south Randen, Wilchingen presents itself as a cosy and interesting place for relaxation and recreation. St. Othmar's Church thrones high above the village on a hill covered with vineyards. Visit the local village museum and poet museum, the autumn festivals and the many other events.
