Pickup and Travel to Chichen Itza

Upon booking your Chichen Itza tour , you’ll receive an email confirmation from the tour company with all the information you need for the tour including the pickup time and location. 

If your hotel is not on the pickup list, they’ll give you a specific meeting point. 

We were picked up in a shuttle just outside of Coco Bongo in Playa del Carmen and then transferred to a large and comfortable charter bus with the rest of the tour group. 

Once everyone is boarded on the bus, you’ll depart for Chichen Itza and the tour guides will begin to share information on the Mayan culture and history during the 2.5 hour drive.

First Stop: Chichen Itza

The first stop on the tour of the ruins is the Mayan archaeological site of Chichen Itza. Once you arrive at the ruins, you’ll make your way through the main entrance of the archeological site. 

The land that Chichen Itza sits on used to be owned by a wealthy Mexican family but in recent years was taken back by the government and opened to the public.

While exploring the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, you’ll see various buildings including the main pyramid (Kukulkan), the Temple of Warriors, the Observatory, and the Ball Court.

At 79 feet high and 91 steps on each side (365 in total), the main Kukulkan pyramid (“El Castillo”) is so impressive, much larger in size than how it looks in pictures!

This pyramid was designed so that twice a year on the Equinox (March 21 and September 21) the sun illuminates seven triangles on the side of the pyramid creating an illusion of a feathered snake descending the pyramid.

The remains at the ancient city of Chichen Itza are very well preserved and you’ll see many intricately carved structures and stone figures.  

All over the site, vendors are allowed to sell souvenirs and memorabilia so it feels a bit commercialized.  Be prepared for many vendors!

🐆 You’ll also hear jaguar growls but don’t be alarmed – these sound makers are just souvenirs!

Second Stop: Mayan Community & Lunch

The second stop on the tour is visiting a Mayan Community where you’ll have the opportunity to hear from a Mayan shaman and shop for Mayan-made souvenirs.  Personally, this was my least favorite part of the tour. 

Most of the souvenirs seemed overpriced and not much different than what you can find from shopping in Playa del Carmen . 

But that could also just be because I live in Playa del Carmen and am used to seeing them all the time! 

There was, however, one unique souvenir that we purchased which was a personalized Mayan calendar reading. 

You have to submit your name and birthday and after lunch, you’ll receive a personalized folder with a reading describing your Maya lunar horoscope, as well as your traits and characteristics. 

Upon receiving my reading, I found out that my protective animal is the Jaguar ( the national mammal of Mexico )–which is the fiercest of them all, and that I was destined to be a shaman.  Sounds about right!

If you’re interested in astrology, it’s a neat thing to have or display in your home. The cost is around $25 USD per person and you can pay with cash or credit card. 

After shopping, you’ll head over to a different area to see a cooking demonstration and you’ll get to try some tacos with handmade tortillas.  Afterwards you’ll go to the restaurant nearby for a full buffet lunch. 

The food was pretty mediocre but that’s pretty much to be expected on a tour.  You’ll get to choose from a spread of salads, fruits, tacos, fish, and pasta.  Note there is an additional charge for beverages. 

Third Stop: Cenote

The third stop on the Chichen Itza tour is visiting a sacred cenote for a refreshing swim. On our tour, we visited Ik Kil Cenote, which was SO impressive and one of the best cenotes to visit near Playa del Carmen , if not all of Mexico.

It’s a deep underground cenote, with plants cascading down the sides and center of the massive hole.  It’s really otherworldly!

Once you arrive, you are required to shower first to remove any sunscreen, and then you’ll descend down many stairs to the bottom. 

There are jumping ledges as well as wide ladders to submerge into the water.  It’s extremely deep so you’ll want to wear a life jacket if you don’t want to tread water the whole time. 

Cenote Ik Kil has many amenities including bathrooms, showers, and changing rooms.  There’s also a clock on the wall so you know when it’s time to leave.

Last Stop: Valladolid

The last stop on the tour is visiting the colonial city of Valladolid.  We only got to spend about 25 minutes here but the historic center and town square is very cute and lively.

The quick stop gave us just enough free time to grab some churros or marquesitas as a snack before heading back to Playa del Carmen. 

I wish I had had more time to experience all the fun things to do in Valladolid –it’s such a charming town!

What to Wear to Chichen Itza

Here’s what I would recommend wearing on top Chichen Itza tours from Playa del Carmen:

• Light breathable clothing : It will be very hot at Chichen Itza so you’ll want to wear light breathable clothing like shorts, a short-sleeve top or tank top, a flowy skirt, or activewear.
• Swimsuit : Wear a  swimsuit  under your clothes so you’re prepared for the Chichen Itza cenote swim after visiting the ruins.
• Comfortable walking shoes : The ruins are widespread and the jungle terrain can be uneven so you’ll want to wear tennis shoes or comfortable walking shoes to last the entire day.

What to Bring on the Chichen Itza Tour

Below are a few items I would recommend bringing on Playa del Carmen tours to Chichen Itza. 

It’s very hot at Chichen Itza and there’s not much shade so be prepared for the sun. If you plan to swim at the cenote, you’ll also want to bring swim items. 

• Sun Hat: Bring a sun hat or visor to protect your face, head, and shoulders from the sun’s intensity throughout the day.
• Sunglasses: It will likely be bright and sunny all year round so you’ll also want to bring a pair of sunglasses to wear around the ruins.
• Biodegradable sunscreen: You’ll definitely need to apply sunscreen before visiting the ruins as there is little shade on site. You’ll be required to shower before entering the cenote but I would recommend using biodegradable sunscreen just to be safe.
• Water bottle: Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the full-day tour. These collapsible water bottles are a great option as they are compact while traveling.
• Camera or GoPro : Bring a high quality camera or GoPro to capture some fun pictures around the ruins and in the cenote.
• Beach towel:  Another essential item to bring is a beach towel to dry off after you get out of the cenote. These  microfiber beach towels  are great because they are super light weight and dry quickly between the multiple stops on the tour.
• Water shoes:  It’s always best to wear water shoes when swimming in a cenote as you’ll be walking over a lot of rocks, slippery stone steps, and slick wooden ladders.
• Change of clothes: Be sure to bring a change of clothes to change into after getting out the cenote. There are restrooms and changing rooms on site.

Tips for Visiting Chichen Itza

Follow these tips to make the most of your Chichen Itza tour experience:

• Book in advance: I would definitely recommend booking your Chichen Itza and cenote tour from Playa del Carmen in advance.  The best Chichen Itza tours can fill up quickly and most tour companies like Viator have flexible cancellation policies so you can get a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours in advance.
• Be prepared for the heat: There is very little shade at Chichen Itza so I would bring a sun hat  and a  water bottle  to stay hydrated. It can get VERY hot!
• Bring breakfast and snacks for the bus: You’ll likely have an early pickup and it’s a long drive to Chichen Itza so bring some breakfast, snacks, or coffee to enjoy on the bus.
• Bring water shoes: I always wear water shoes whenever I visit a cenote as the ground is usually very rocky and uneven. Bring a pair of water shoes to protect your feet and be way more comfortable.

The ADO bus leaves at 8:17 am from Playa del Carmen and arrive in Chichen Itza at 12:17 pm.

Day Trip Bus

If you’re doing a day trip and need to return to Playa del Carmen, you can catch the ADO bus back again. It leaves Chichen Itza at 4:00 pm and arrives in Playa del Carmen at 7:55 pm. This only gives you four hours to enjoy the archaeological site, but it’s an option if you’re pressed for time.

The cons of getting to Chichen Itza by bus

The disadvantage to taking an ADO bus directly to Chichen Itza is that you’ll get there quite late in the day when the heat and the crowds are at their peak.

How to make the most of your trip to Chichen Itza by bus

To avoid this, you could decide to spend one or more nights in the nearby colonial city of Valladolid. This lovely city is a great place to visit.

Many ADO buses run from Playa del Carmen to Valladolid every day with different schedules, so you can choose the time that works best for you.

Spend some time enjoying the city, then catch a “ colectiv o” bus to Chichen Itza as early as 7 am the next morning. The trip only takes 45 minutes, so you’ll get to Chichen Itza bright and early, with no time constraints!

The ruins at Chichen Itza are fascinating and varied, with examples from different periods in history. You can learn about Mayan culture, including their deities, such as the rain god Chaac, or the feathered serpent Kukulcan.

Many of these ruins have intricate bas-relief images on the outside, harking back to interesting periods in Yucatan history. The Itzá peoples were also masters of the time. They developed incredible calendar systems related to the movement of the stars and sun.

Portals to Xibalba

The sacred cenotes on the site (as well as those in the surrounding area) are very beautiful and interesting.

Did you know that the Maya thought of sinkholes (cenotes) as portals to Xibalba, the Mayan underworld?

In fact, they believed that their serpent god Kukulcan was born in the underworld. Eventually, he grew so big he broke through to the surface.

Many demons inhabit Xibalba, so one of the main roles of the Mayan priests was to appease them through sacrifices. These sacrifices included jewelry, gold, jade, and even human maidens, children, and warriors.

Hidden Cenote beneath the Pyramid of Kukulcan

There is an underground cenote beneath the most famous structure in Chichen Itza: the Temple of Kukulcan. This iconic pyramid was built right over the top of a hidden cenote. Scientists fear that, eventually, the limestone platform it sits on will disintegrate, and the entire pyramid will fall into the water below .

Hopefully, that won’t ever happen, but it is all the more reason to go on a Chichen Itza tour now, while the ruins are still intact.

Here are the most important temples and buildings to visit in Chichen-Itza.

Pyramid of Kukulcan

I won’t spend long talking about this pyramid (also called El Castillo), because I don’t want to steal the thunder from your certified guide!

However, no trip to Chichen Itza would be complete without seeing this incredible structure. And you couldn’t avoid either as it sits in the middle of the ancient Mayan city in all its splendor.

It was built between 900 and 1200 A.D. Archaeologists believe it was made as a lookout onto the four corners of the universe.

Each side has 91 steps, with balustrades carved into the shape of a feathered serpent.

If you decide to visit Chichen Itza during the Equinox of Spring and Fall you will see an interesting event, when the sun of the late afternoon creates the illusion of a snake prowling down the northern staircase slowly. 

This even has been seen as a symbol of Quetzalcoatl or Kukulcan, the feathered serpent entering the heavens, earth, and the underworld, day and night.

The Ball Court

The Mayan people played an interesting game using a rubber ball. They couldn’t use their hands after the initial throw but would bounce the ball off their thighs and hips, and try to get it through a circular ring.

The ball game wasn’t really so much a game as a special ritual that might have represented the legendary battle between day and night.

It was who won who was being sacrificed. In fact, it was considered an honor!

Tzompantli of Chichen

A tzompantli is a structure common amongst the Maya. The people of Chichen would display the heads of their enemies on this structure. The outside is covered in five hundred (!) skull engravings. There are also engravings depicting an eagle eating human hearts, a human sacrifice, and skeletal warriors carrying arrows and shields.

Creepy? Check. Interesting? Check!

The Thousand Columns

The Thousand Columns Group is a very impressive sight! Although there aren’t actually one thousand columns in this part of the ruins (200 is the real number), it is inspiring and grand.

When archaeologists named the site, they wanted that grandness to come across. I agree with them, The Thousand Columns sounds much better than the more accurate but rather dull “Two Hundred Columns.”

So what is it? Its history is a bit mysterious, but the quadrangle was probably divided into four rooms which were used as meeting halls.

PRO-TIP – Save money on food and buy your lunch at a restaurant in Pisté instead of at the over-priced restaurants within the ruins complex.

What NOT to take to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen

Some items are either not allowed in Chichen Itza, or require special permits or charges. Avoid problems and fees and skip packing the following items:

🔴 Food 🔴 Drinks other than water 🔴 Professional Camera Equipment – you can take any DSLR camera but tripods are not allowed 🔴 Drones (you need a special permit that you have to apply for a few weeks in advance and pay hundreds of $$)

If you are a professional photographer and would like to take your equipment into Chichen Itza, you can apply for a permit through the INAH office.

Can I hire a guide in Chichen Itza?

Absolutely! If you aren’t going with one of the Chichen Itza tours, you can easily hire your own tour guide once you get to the entrance. It will be much more interesting to explore the site with a certified guide to tell you all about ancient Maya and the history of Mexico. The cost is around 1000 MXN per group

Prefer a self-guided tour?

Alternatively, you can purchase a self-guided tour packet , such as the Chichen Itza walking tour available through Action Tour Guide. It includes audio stories about different sites and has gotten several 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor.

Are dogs allowed at Chichen Itza?

Only guide dogs are allowed, and they must be kept on a leash. Be sure to clean up after them if you have a guide dog.

Can you go to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen without a tour or guide?

You don’t have to take a tour or get a guide when you go to Chichen Itza. Personally, I like to learn interesting facts about the places I go to, and the Mayan ruins at this heritage site are no exception.

But it’s up to you! Maybe you like to “feast with your eyeballs”. Or maybe you love to research on your own in your free time.

When is the best time to visit Chichen Itza?

There are two things to consider when it comes to figuring out when is the best time to visit Chichen Itza: crowds, and the weather.

Crowds At Chichen Itza

Up to 2,500,000 people visit the Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza every year. As you can imagine, that means it can get pretty crowded at the ruins. Tourism is at its peak in December and January, so if you can, book your visit in November, February, or March. I also recommend getting to Chichen Itza right when it opens at 8 am so you can beat some of the crowds.

Weather At Chichen itza

Chichen Itza is located in the center of the Yucatan peninsula. Expect the weather to be hot and humid year-round.

However, the weather is even hotter and more humid during the summer. It could also be rainy at that time. The weather is nicer with blue skies from November through April.

The Best Cenotes to See Near Chichen Itza

Whether you are going on a group tour from Playa del Carmen, or are visiting on your own, it’s good to know what cenotes are worth visiting around Chichen Itza. Different tours visit different cenotes. And of course, if you have a rental car, you can visit as many as you like!

🔵 Cenote Ik Kil

This deep sinkhole is the closest one to Chichen Itza (only ten minutes away). You must be pretty mobile if you’re going to visit this cenote because you’ll have to walk down 88 feet of stairs to get to the water! But it is an amazing experience to swim in that deep well and look up at a circular sky framed in rock walls and dangling vines. It’s beautiful!

Just expect a huge crowd.

Insider tip – Cenote Ik-kil has also bungalows for rent at a very affordable rate. So if you are driving you can spend there one night and visit the Cenote when it’s close to the public!

🔵 XCajum Cenote

The XCajum Cenote is about 25 minutes from Chichen Itza. This sinkhole is very large and touristy, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a visit.

There are lockers where you can store your belongings and a delicious buffet lunch. Swimming in gorgeous turquoise water will be very refreshing after the heat at the ruins.

🔵 Yokdzonot Cenote

Yokdzonot is only 24 minutes from the archaeological site. It is easier to access than some of the other cenotes.

There aren’t any lockers, and you are supposed to wear a life vest (you get one for the price of your entrance). This is a spot favored by locals.

🔵 Lol-Ha  Cenote

Lol-Ha is another beautiful cenote. It is only 30 minutes from the Chichen ruins. The water is a deep blue. If you like cliff diving, you can jump off the sides. The cenote is 52 feet deep, so it is sure to get your adrenaline pumping.

🔵 Saamal Cenote

If you plan to visit Valladolid, it will be easy to stop at Cenote Saamal on your way in or out. It is located on the property of a Hacienda, so it is well run and well kept.

The stairs can be slippery, so hang on to the rail when you’re going down. This is a big cenote, so even when big tours come through, it won’t feel cramped.

Expect to pay around $7 to get in. The Hacienda also has a tasty buffet for when you get hungry.

Note: If you don’t have a car, you can visit the Spanish colonial city of Valladolid by catching a local “colectivo” bus.

🔵 Suytun Cenote

If you don’t mind driving 40 minutes away from Chichen Itza, Suytun Cenote is a wonderful spot to visit. It is a closed cenote, so it looks like an enormous cavern.

The water is a gorgeous clear green, and there is a concrete path leading out to a circular platform in the middle of the water.

Once a day, the sun will fall through one of the small holes in the roof and land on the platform. Talk about a memorable moment!

The Best City to See Near Chichen Itza

Valladolid is what Lonely Planet calls Mexico’s Bohemian Oasis. Picture colonial-era buildings, palm trees swaying in the wind, bohemian shops, and cafes, and lots of places to eat.

You can rent a bicycle and sail down the Calzada de los Frailes, nab some tacos, sip a cappuccino, or enjoy gelato made from local ingredients.

🏨 Places to stay nearby🏨

Does a day trip sound too rushed? If so, maybe you want to spend a couple of days enjoying the area around Chichen Itza.

This could include going on a full-day tour of the ruins, swimming in multiple cenotes, and exploring the streets of Valladolid.

If that’s more your style, here are some accommodation options for you to consider.

🏨 Hotel Chichen Itza

This three-star hotel was recently renovated. Hotel Chichen Itza is located just one mile from the ruins, in the center of the town of Piste.

It has a swimming pool, tropical garden, free wifi, free parking, satellite TV, and a restaurant and bar. The staff will also get you into Chichen Itza without having to wait in line.

🏨 Hotel Puerta Chichén

Hotel Puerta Chichen is another good option if you’re looking for somewhere close to Chichen Itza. It is only a 3-minute drive from the archaeological site and a 6-minute drive from the cenote Ik Kil. They have a swimming pool and offer fresh delicious Maya cuisine in their restaurant.

🏨 Hacienda Chichen Resort

This boutique eco-hotel is also very close to Chichen Itza. The price of Hacienda Chichen Resort is a bit higher than the hotels previously mentioned on this list, but guests say it is a relaxing and lovely place to stay.

There is a big property, swimming pool, air conditioning, and an on-site chapel.

You can spend the night here, then get an early start on your full-day excursion into the Mayan Ruins of Chichen.

Enjoy visiting the sacred cenote, tour the pyramids before it gets too busy, and then spend a few hours cooling off back at your hotel.

🏨 Villas Arqueológicas Chichen Itza

The Villas Arqueológicas is one of the hotels closest to the Chichen Itza entrance. It is a pretty economical price, but still comfortable. It’s a good option if you don’t want to take a paid tour from Playa del Carmen.

From Playa del Carmen to Chichén Itza: final thoughts

As you can see, it is well worth it to visit Chichen Itza. There is so much to see, not only within the grounds but in the surrounding areas as well. Book your excursion, rent your car , pack lots of water, and get ready for an epic trip!

🚗 Is It Safe to Drive in Mexico?

The short answer is: depending on where you are. Although in general if you stick to the main roads and don’t drive at night you should probably be safe. In lesser tourist areas you should probably check the local news to stay up to date. Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy everywhere, even at night, although I would still avoid it. It will probably work, especially if you have a European or US phone, but your roaming rates may be to the stars (check with your SIM provider). Even if have an affordable international rate, you will be much better off by buying a Mexican SIM Card . It’s cheap, easy to set up, and it will keep you connected with your friends, family, and, more important, google Maps so you will never get lost!

🤕 Is It Safe to Travel to Mexico Right Now?

The short answer is, yes it is. However, there are parts of Mexico that are indeed troubled and you should avoid for now, and others that are super safe and easy to travel around.

Regardless of where you are you should always use some common sense rules such as, never flaunting expensive clothing, accessories, electronics, or money and keeping a low profile.

Wondering how to get from Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza? There are several transportation options you can choose from, so check them out!

Chichen Itza is considered one of the New 7 Wonders of the World , and it’s rich in history, Mayan culture, and traditions, so it’s not a surprise that so many tourists visit the site every day!

If you’re vacationing in the Riviera Maya, you should include a trip to the magnificent pyramids of Chichen Itza on your itinerary.

I absolutely get it if all you want to do when vacationing is relax by the pool with a cocktail in hand. But even if it’s the only thing you do outside of your resort, please plan a day trip to Chichen Itza. That’s what I did on my first trip to Mexico – spent the week at the resort but booked an excursion to Chicken Itza and Valladolid.

There are a few transportation options to get from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza.

There are quite a few Chichen Itza tours from Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya , and joining one of them is a great idea if you’re traveling on your own or want to explore the nearby cenotes and highlights of the area beside the ruins.

The company I recommend is the one I use every time I travel to Mexico , and I’ve had nothing but exceptional rides with them.

The drivers are incredibly friendly, the service is always on time, and the vehicles are comfortable and spotless. More importantly, t hey drive carefully and safely , something I value immensely!

You’ll be appointed a personal driver to pick you up at your hotel and drive you to the ruins, answering your questions about the site’s history along the way. While you can choose your pickup time, consider that the journey takes over 2 hours, so it’s advisable to leave as soon as possible to avoid the crowds. 

You’ll have plenty of time to visit Chichen Itza, so feel free to roam around at your own pace , or hire a tour guide at the site to learn more facts about the ancient pyramids. You’ll find your driver waiting for you when you’re ready to go.

Pros and Cons of the Private Transfer

❌ The only downside is the price, which is considerably more expensive than taking the ADO Bus to the ruins. In my opinion, if you’re three people the cost is worth the service provided, but if you’re a solo traveler or on a tight budget you might want to check out other options.

TAKE THE ADO BUS TO CHICHEN ITZA

A cheaper option is traveling from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza by bus . 

▶️ There’s only one ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza a day; it departs at 8.10 AM from the ADO station on 5th Avenue.

💲The ticket costs $33 at the time of writing, and the journey takes a little over 3.5 hours. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

👉 To get back from Chichen Itza to Playa del Carmen you also only got one bus , leaving Chichen Itza at 4 PM; don’t forget to check your time regularly!

▶️ If being in a time rush stresses you out (and you don’t want to be stressed on your holidays, more like the other way around!) you can take the ADO bus to Valladolid , and stay in this beautiful colonial city for the night. 

The next day you could visit the pink lakes of Las Coloradas before returning to Playa del Carmen!

There are colectivos (shared vans) leaving from right next to the ADO station in Valladolid to Chichen Itza and the ride takes about one hour. After visiting the ruins, you’ll also get to stroll around the city or visit some of the incredible cenotes in Valladolid.

Pros and Cons of the ADO Bus

✅ It’s the cheapest transportation method, ideal for solo travelers and those on a budget.

❌ You have to plan your day trip around the bus schedule, so you won’t have the chance to be very flexible.

❌ The trip is way longer than the private transfer or driving yourself. If you go on a day trip, you’ll spend 7 hours of it sitting on the bus.

RENT A CAR IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN AND DRIVE TO CHICHEN ITZA

To get to Chichen Itza by car, take the 305 Highway that connects Playa del Carmen with the 180 Highway; this is the one that takes you to the ruins. Both are toll roads, so the trip will cost you 344 pesos each way (17 USD at the time of writing).

⚠️ The toll fees can only be paid in Mexican Pesos , so make sure you take enough cash with you. Credit cards or US dollars will not be accepted. 

If you’d rather not pay the toll fees you can take the slow road to Chichen Itza , which is free but it will take you around 30 minutes more. If you choose this road, you’ll have to take the 307 Highway to Tulum, head to Valladolid, and then take the 180 Highway from there to Chichen Itza.

The route is pretty straightforward, especially if you follow the Chichen Itza directions from your GPS. The drive will take you 2 hours and 50 minutes .

Pros and Cons of Car Rental

✅ Gives you ultimate flexibility and freedom, as you get to choose when to go, and what other places to visit in the region before returning to Playa del Carmen.

❌ You’ll have to pay the toll fees on the road to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen.

❌ You could potentially park for free on the side of the road, but since it’s rather narrow it’s completely unadvisable. This means you have to pay the parking fees at the entrance of Chichen Itza.

Tips for Renting a Car in Playa del Carmen (and Mexico)

⚠️If you end up renting your car once you’re in Mexico, be on the lookout for tourist scams ; sadly, they abound. 

▶️ One of the most frequent scams involves asking you to pay for insurance and insisting that it’s mandatory ; it is not . As long as you have travel insurance or credit card travel insurance, you do not need to get any other, so don’t pay them for something you don’t need. 

▶️ They may also try to charge you for car damages or scratches that were already there when you rented it, so make sure you take pictures of the vehicle before using it to have proof and avoid unnecessary (and unfair) extra fees. 

If you rent your car at the Cancun Airport, arrive with plenty o f time to return it, as most scams occur when they know the tourists are rushing for their flights and don’t have time to argue, ending up paying extra (could be hundreds of!) dollars. 

PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO CHICHEN ITZA FAQs

Chichen Itza is absolutely worth the hype. If it being one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO Heritage Site doesn’t say much to you, consider this. It was built around the 6th century AD, it was the most populated (and one of the most important) cities in pre-Columbian times and its main pyramid, Kukulcan, inspired great legends. If you’re visiting Yucatan or Quintana Roo state, you should definitely spare a day to visit Chichen Itza.

Driving around the Riviera Maya is generally safe, especially since it’s a highly touristic area in Mexico. The roads to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen are well-maintained, and it will take you a little over 2 hours to get there.  If you want to enjoy the flexibility of having your own vehicle but avoid driving, I highly recommend pre-booking a private transfer .

The fastest way to get from the Mayan Riviera to Chichen Itza is by taking two toll roads, which currently cost 344 pesos each way (around 17 dollars).

There are amazing places near the ruins that you can visit on your day trip to Chichen Itza. However, I suggest heading first to the archaeological site so you can enjoy it before the big crowds arrive. After your visit is done, you can then head to Cenote Ik Kil for a swim, or go to the nearby colonial city of Valladolid and take a dip in the cenotes there .

The closest airport to Chichen Itza is Merida International Airport.

Playa del Carmen is 180 kilometers (111 miles) from Chichen Itza. The drive takes around 2.5 hours.

How to get from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza

For visitors to the area one of the first places people have on their agenda is a tour to Chichen Itza. So if you are staying in our area of the Riviera Maya, how do you best get from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza? There are three ways to get there. Each way has advantages and there are some cost you might not have expected. See what it is like in each of the three methods to get from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza.

How to drive from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza

For people that like a little adventure and time to explore on their own, this can be a great way to visit the ruins. It also can be a good way for a group or family to save money and still get to see one of the most visited sights in Mexico. However there are cost involved and drawbacks. What are some of these?

Cost of driving from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza

• The first thing you need is a rental car ( see our recommended local car rental in Playa Del Carmen article ). After insurance and taxes, for a basic car this will cost you about $40-50 USD.
• Toll road or slow route? There are two basic ways from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza. The fastest way is the new toll highway that leaves from Playa Del Carmen (305) and cuts directly across to the 180 Highway. The 305 is a toll road and so is the 180 Highway. The total cost from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza is 344 pesos each way or 688 pesos round trip ( to see Mexico’s toll highways and current tolls, click here ). Taking the toll roads will take about 2 hour and 11 minutes and is 180 kilometers.  The non toll route will take you on the 307 to Tulum, then towards Coba and onward to Valladolid. From Valladolid you would take the old 180 highway to Chichen Itza. This way takes about 2 hours and 50 minutes and is 215 kilometers.
• Gas expenses. Based on the above distances of the routes from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza, the base price for gas will be about 205 pesos each way or a total of 410 pesos round trip on the toll route. The non toll road route will cost about 240 peso one way or 480 round trip in gas. Of course you probably will do a little more driving while out on an adventure.
• Parking at Chichen Itza. Car parking cost 80 pesos.

So for a car rental, tolls, and gas the price will be about 1,800 pesos. Now if you drive there you have to figure in the admission since you will pay this if you are not on a tour that includes this. The price is 571 pesos per person.

Driving to Chichen Itza and finding a place to eat

You will also need to factor in eating lunch somewhere. We don’t recommend any of the restaurants at the archeological site of Chichen Itza . We recommend driving to the local 180 road and going toward the town of Piste or toward Valladolid. Along the road you will find some small and large restaurants that cater to tourist. The super big ones tend to get tourist busses and have buffets (usually with lower quality food). You should calculate about 150 pesos per person for a meal.

How to take the bus from Playa Del Caren to Chichen Itza

There is a daily ADO bus that leaves from the bus station in Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza at 8:00am. The bus takes 3 hours and 45 minutes to get there. This is a little bit of a slow way of getting there but it is easy. Returning from Chichen Itza to Playa Del Carmen there is one ADO bus a day at 4:30pm. It takes 3 hours and 24 minutes to make the trip. The cost of the bus to Chichen Itza ranges from about 150-250 pesos each way. This depends if there is a sale or not. We do recommend buying the complete ticket the day before if you choose this option. Not only can you make sure what bus station it is leaving from, you can also make sure you secure a ticket both ways.

Alternative bus routes from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza ruins

Alternative routes would involve a bus to Valladolid Yucatan . This is a small city in the middle of the peninsula. Here you can spend the night and go the following day to Chichen Itza or just stop in Valladolid to and from the ruins. There are four buses a day from Valladolid to Chichen Itza and five buses a day from Chichen Itza to Valladolid. Since there are multiple schedules it is best to check the ADO bus website here for the complete list.

There is also another option from Valladolid to Chichen Itza. There are colectivo vans that run daily from Valladolid. These leave just a few doors east of the main bus station in Valladolid. These vans go when they fill up. The best time to go is in the morning when there are more people going and the colectivos fill up faster. The cost is about 20 pesos less and a little faster but is subject to waiting for riders.

Tours from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza

For most people on vacation, a tour from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza is the easiet way to see the ruins. This way you can leave the driving up to the tour and enjoy a planned day. The price of a tour is worth it to most people because a trip to Chichen Itza it is a “ must see ” when coming to this part of Mexico. You will see tours offered everywhere, but how do you know what is a good tour? What should you expect in a tour to Chichen Itza?

Most people book a tour just because they know they want to go there and don’t realize the details. For one, the travel time is going to be at least 4 hours of the day and most tours to Chichen Itza take a very full day. Tours that are priced under $65 USD for adults are going to be budget options. Bus tours to Chichen Itza

• Xichen Clasico Tour . This bus tour by Xcaret picks you up from your hotel. The main part of this excursion is a guided tour of Chichen Itza and then a visit to Cenote Ik Kil . At Cenote Ik Kil you will eat at a buffer and have the chance to swim in the famous cenote. This is a more budget level tour from Playa Del Carmen to Chichen Itza. • Xichen Deluxe Tour . This is another tour by Xcaret. It picks you up at your hotel and takes you Chichen Itza. A guide will take you around the ruins and then you will go to the colonial city of Valladolid. Here you will enjoy their special restaurant La Casona and have a great meal with a lot of variety. You will also have time to walk around the town square. Depending on the schedule, before or after lunch you will visit Cenote Zaci. This is a deep cenote in the city of Valladolid. Small tours to Chichen Itza

This small group tour will take you in a van to either stop at Cenote Maya first or Chichen Itza. A certified guide will take you around the ruins and you will have some time to self explore a little. The Cenote Maya part is fun because it is only available to visit with this tour and is the largest cenote in the Yucatan! At Cenote Maya you will enjoy a buffet of reginal cuisine. The tour of the cenote involves rappel. swimming, and zip lines all in the cenote.

This tour is special because the tour company operates Cenote Maya and it is only visited by their tours. They also focus on the Mayan heritage of the area and the tour feels a little less touristy.

Private tours to Chichen Itza

If you want something special or a private tour just for your family or group, this can be a nice option. Some places offer “ private tours ” but this is just code for a small group, and this does not give you ultimate freedom to choose details for your trip. These were pretty easy to follow. I took my family to Chichen Itza for the day and we found it pretty easy. Parking was necessary because the “free” parking is far from the entrance.

Thanks for all the details. I hope once things open up again to go and the info will all be correct. I hope to take the bus and visit Valladolid also. Chichen Itza has been on my list of places to see for a long time.

We are going this weekend and will make a stopover in Valladolid. I hope things are open to see the town. Then we will use Valladolid for a base to visit Chichen Itza.

Hi Mariane did you drive yourself if so was it safe on the toll roads? My boyfriend and I are planning to rent a car and drive from Playa Del Carmen next Tuesday morning to see Chichen Itza!

We will reply in case Mariane does not. There is a little construction on the highway for the new Maya Train so it causes a little delay. If you staywith the speed limit you are good to go. Sometimes police stop people for speeding.

Cómo ir de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá (autobús o excursión)

Este post sobre cómo ir de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá te mostrará todos los pasos a seguir para realizar, de la forma más cómoda, el traslado a este increíble yacimiento arqueológico declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco.

Para llegar a una de las nuevas siete maravillas del mundo moderno, situada en la península de Yucatán (México), y bien conectada por carretera con las principales ciudades turísticas de Riviera Maya como Playa del Carmen, dispones de los populares autobuses ADO, el coche de alquiler o reservar una cómoda excursión con guía en español. Hay que tener en cuenta que Chichén Itzá está a 180 kilómetros al oeste de Playa del Carmen y tardarás cómo mínimo dos horas y media de trayecto por lo que es muy recomendable salir a primera hora de la mañana para invertir después entre 3 o 4 horas en recorrer este recinto arqueológico de la antigua civilización maya del que destaca su famosa Pirámide Kukulcán y el Gran Juego de Pelota, entre otros muchos.

Basándonos en la experiencia de nuestra visita a este lugar durante un viaje a México , te mostramos cómo llegar a Chichén Itzá desde Playa del Carmen , para que escojas el medio de transporte que mejor se adapte a tus necesidades. ¡Empezamos!

Cómo ir de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá en excursión

La forma más cómoda e interesante para ir de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá es reservar esta excursión que incluye el cenote Chichi Kan, situado muy cerca de Valladolid, ya que de esta forma contarás con un guía en español que te explicará la historia del yacimiento y sus edificios principales, un aspecto fundamental en unas ruinas que son difíciles de imaginar en su época de mayor esplendor. Esta excursión a Chichén Itzá en autobús o minibús que suele durar entre 12 y 13 horas, incluye la recogida y el traslado al hotel, una comida tipo buffet, una bebida y las entradas al yacimiento y el cenote.

Otras de las excursiones mejor valoradas por los viajeros que visitan Chichén Itzá desde Playa del Carmen e incluyen guía en español, además de la visita a otras maravillas que visitar en México como Valladolid , Cobá y el fotogénico cenote Ik-Kil, son:

Cómo llegar a Chichén Itzá desde Playa del Carmen en autobús

La forma más barata para llegar a Chichén Itzá desde Playa del Carmen es subir a uno de los tres autobuses que salen cada día de la Terminal Turística de ADO, situada en el cruce de la Quinta Avenida con Benito Juárez, tardan unas tres horas y cuestan 340 pesos (17 euros). Nosotros recomendamos coger el autobús de las 8 o las 9 de la mañana para poder dedicar un mínimo de 3 horas al recinto y volver con el autobús de las 16:30, el único de vuelta. Recuerda de reservar la plaza desde esta página oficial con varios días de antelación, sobre todo en fin de semana, si no quieres quedarte sin asiento. En caso de no tener plaza puedes preguntar en tu hotel si hay algún colectivo que realice el trayecto de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá, aunque te saldrá más caro.

Una opción más flexible es coger uno de los autobuses que salen cada hora desde las 6:30h a las 20h desde la Terminal ADO y te dejan en la estación de Valladolid en unas dos horas por unos 250 pesos (12 euros). Una vez en Valladolid puedes coger otro bus de la misma compañía que te dejará cerca de la puerta de entrada a Chichén Itza en unos 50 minutos por unos 7 euros o uno de los colectivos que salen cuando se llenan.

Coche de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá

En nuestro caso optamos por ir de Playa del Carmen a Chichén Itzá en coche de alquiler y así completar esta lista de cosas que hacer en Yucatán disfrutando de la libertad de parar dónde y cuándo quisiéramos. La forma más rápida es por la autopista 180D o por la 180, ambas tienen peajes que cuestan alrededor de 250 pesos (12 euros) y tardarás unas dos horas y 40 minutos. Si dispones de coche te recomendamos llegar a primera hora (abren a las 8h) y así evitar los grupos organizados que saturan este complejo arqueológico en las horas centrales del día.

El precio de los taxis, que es de unos 200 euros el trayecto, lo convierten en la opción más cara y menos aconsejable para realizar este trayecto.

Otros consejos prácticos para el traslado

Si aterrizas en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún, el más importante de la Península del Yucatán, con vuelos directos desde la principales ciudades europeas y latinoamericanas, te recomendamos leer este post sobre cómo llegar a Playa del Carmen .

Que documentacion hay que presentar en el trayecto ida y vuelta desde Pl del Carmen a Chichen Itza. Estare alli en Enero y a no ser que sea imprescindi le prefiero dejar la documentacion (pasaporte) en el apartamento

But the real magic of this area lies in its natural phenomenon – the cenotes. Visit cenotes in the Yucatan for an experience like no other.

Honestly, this is one of our family’s favorite things to do in all of Mexico. We love to visit cenotes and have probably done this more than five times over the last several years.

What is a Cenote?

First things first. Cenotes are like natural swimming holes that have been formed over time from pockets of limestone, fed by fresh rainwater and filtration from above. They are interconnected by a network of tunnels that flow the clean water through the rivers and out to sea. These cenotes are like deep water wells, with refreshing, clear water.

Since they are millions of years old, their origins are uncertain. However, many scientists conclude that cenotes were formed as part of the Big Bang. A meteor hit the Earth nearby, forming the Gulf of Mexico and spraying rock and debris for hundreds of miles. Looking at a map, the cenotes encircle the meteor’s impact point like an arc.

Regardless of origin, cenotes today beckon visitors to take a dip in their calm, clear waters. Visit cenotes for recreation, a bit of lore and perhaps a glimpse into our ancient history.

Types of Cenotes

There are different kinds of cenotes, each with its unique features. The Maya believed these cenotes were sacred gateways to the underworld, where their gods and ancestors resided.

Open Cenotes – Where sunlight dapples the water, fern grottos form along the walls, and vines dangle down the sides.

Semi-Open – Where natural light still filters through, but mostly under a rocky overhang.

Cave Cenotes – Where visitors climb down man-made staircases into darkened caverns, many with stalactites, stalagmites, and other interesting rock formations.

Ancient Cenotes – Where they have been designated as special to the local Mayan and Aztec people, who used them for religious rituals and spiritual honors.

Day Trips to Visit Cenotes

The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for having thousands of cenotes that dot the thick, tropical jungles. Many of them have been discovered and prepared for visitors to enjoy. Some are trek-worthy from most major resort destinations around the area, while others are even located in city centers, within restaurants, and on hotel grounds. Most are privately owned.

There are plenty of cenotes located very close to the major destinations in this area, including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and Merida.

Visit Cenotes Near Cancun

Nearest to Cancun is the Ruta De Los Cenotes (Route of the Cenotes) with more than ten options within a 30-minute drive of the Cancun resorts. Some of the best include Kin Ha, a cave cenote that has deep blue waters you can step into or jump from a platform, and La Mojarras, one of the more active cenotes equipped with ziplines where you can drop directly into the water below.

Another exciting option is Siete Bocas (Seven Mouths), which has seven entrances (or mouths) to the underground network of rivers that flow into a beautiful turquoise pool. And for those who like a little adventure, La Noire is a darker cave cenote with zipline and jumping platform, as well as bats lurking in the hollows.

Visit Cenotes Near Playa Del Carmen

If you’re staying in Playa Del Carmen, you must check out the Cenote Azul, one of the most beautiful cenotes in the area and popular because it is open to the sky and great for visitors of all ages.

You can also book a special Xenotes Tour with Xcaret that visits several special cenotes. The tour includes Ha Cenote, a semi-open cenote with vines and tree roots hanging down from the rocky cliffsides. Snorkeling and kayaking are available here. At nearby Iik Cenote, you can enjoy ziplines over the water, along with a cliff jump more than 20 feet high. Another exciting option is the Lu’um Cenote, where you can rappel into a cavern cenote with ancient rock formations and an underground pool for swimming. There’s also K’aak’ Cenote, which is like a waterpark with natural water slides, ziplines, and cliff jumps into the blue waters.

Tour company near Playa Del Carmen: The Xcaret Tour called Xenote is great for guests staying at any of the three Xcaret resort properties. Tours are available daily from Cancun and Playa Del Carmen areas. Even if you are not a resort guest, it’s possible to book their tours.

Visit Cenotes Near Tulum

If you’re staying in Tulum, there are several great cenotes nearby. One popular option is the Cenote Dos Ojos Park, which is an all-purpose cenote. It offers ample sunlight, beautiful cave formations with stalactites and stalagmites, and even hammocks for relaxing.

There are also several underground cenotes located near the Mayan ruins at Coba, including Cenote Choo-Ha, Tamcach-Ha, and Multum-Ha, all with interesting rock formations. For an Instagram-worthy experience, check out the Suytan cenote, famous for its stone path and circular platform that juts out into the deep blue pool.

We had a blast spending the day with them and touring the ruins at Coba along with some fantastic cenotes nearby.

Visit Cenotes Near Merida

If you’re staying in Merida, there are several great cenotes nearby, including the Ik Kil Cenote, located in the city of Valladolid near Chichen Itza. This enormous cenote is popular as a refreshing and beautiful reward after visiting the Mayan ruins. Another popular option is the Santa Barbara Cenotes, the most visited in the Merida area. This location offers three gorgeous cenotes, each offering a different experience, one blue, one green, and one turquoise. For a more gentrified experience, check out the Cenote Hacienda Mucuyche. It’s located on the property of a private 18th-century plantation, complete with a restaurant, shop, and other amenities.

Some locations are private and you could even do a little skinny dipping.
