ACM SIGCOMM 2023, New York City, US

ACM SIGCOMM 2023 Call for Travel Grants Applications

Support for SIGCOMM 2023 travel grants will be available to students, postdocs, and young faculty early in their career with limited startup funds. We would like to encourage all of you to apply. This year, the Conference Organizing Committee is working hard to provide as much travel support to as many conference attendees as possible. Travel support has been provided from several different supporting organizations. Still, resources are limited, thus, most probably, only part of the well-justified requests can be granted.

In addition to standard travel grants open to the above-mentioned academic participants, we also have special support to fund grants that will increase the diversity of the SIGCOMM conference:

The N2Women travel grant is awarded to women researchers. Its awarding will be overseen by the N2Women group in coordination with the SIG.

SIGCOMM’s GeoDiversity Travel Grant is for applicants preferably in their early career and with limited startup fund (applicants who are at most five years of full-time, full-level [non-postdoc] post-PhD employment will be given higher priority), and may be graduate students or postdocs. These grants are to promote exchange between the SIGCOMM community and networking researchers/students from countries historically under-represented at SIGCOMM conferences (e.g. Latin America, Africa, and parts of Asia). GeoDiversity Travel Grants are likely to be funded at a higher level (see https://sigcomm.org/for-authors/geodiversity-travel-grants ).

Please consider the following important information before applying: The application process is the same for all types of attendees and all sources of funding, and is described in the rest of this page. Travel grant awards are meant to partially cover the cost of attending and participating in SIGCOMM 2023. The only travel expenses that reimbursements can be used towards are: transportation, hotel, and conference registration. Note that the award recipients will need to pay for the expenses ahead of time and get reimbursed after the conference. The exact number of awards will depend on the availability of funds and will be determined as funding amounts are finalized.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria will be used in the selection process:

  • Preference will be given to applicants that do not present a paper in the conference. The rationale for this criterion is that the participation costs for a presenting author should be covered by their home institution. Note that this preference applies to non-presenter authors, provided that they articulate a compelling case for why their home institution cannot cover the costs of their attendance in their application.
  • Students presenting posters are encouraged to apply though. The rationale is to support the participation of students who do not present papers but contribute to the conference in other ways.
  • Evidence of a serious interest in networking, as demonstrated by coursework and/or project experience, will be required. Advanced students close to graduation or in the job market will also be given priority, when possible.
  • We particularly encourage participation of women and under-represented minorities. Special attention will be given to applicants from minority-serving institutions.
  • After giving priority to the above criteria, (co-)authors of papers may be considered but will be given lower priority. The rationale is to support people that contribute to the conference and cannot attend otherwise due to budget or other constraints. (An example is a student who is a second author but does not present and would not be able to attend the conference otherwise. Another example is a postdoc who presents work with a past affiliation or without affiliation and thus is not supported either by his/her past or current institution. In both cases, the applicant and the letter-writer should explain in their letters why it is impossible to support the applicant from other sources.)

Where and How to Apply

All application materials (applicant’s info, CV, and letters compiled into ONE PDF) should be submitted electronically via https://sigcomm23travel.hotcrp.com .

Use your full name, affiliation, country (e.g., “First Last; XYZ University; USA”) as the title of the submission. The applicant should create an account in the submission system and upload AS ONE PDF:

  • An application letter, including the applicant’s info (up to 2 pages)
  • An up-to-date CV (up to 4 pages), and
  • A letter from their supervisor (PhD adviser for students, PhD or postdoc adviser for postdocs, or supervisor/department chair for faculty/researchers). The recommendation letter can be directly uploaded by the applicant during the application process (Recommended). Alternatively, the advisor can directly email the recommendation letter to the travel grant chair (Feng Qian, [email protected] ) if confidentiality is a concern.

The applicant’s letter should be based on this template and include the following sections:

  • An explicit identification of (a) the applicant’s current country of study or work, (b) academic status (student, postdoc, or junior faculty member), (c) whether the applicant qualifies for a GeoDiversity Travel Grant (see above), and (d) whether the applicant would like to be considered for the N2Women travel grant.
  • Whether the applicant is the presenter of a paper, or has submitted a poster or demo; and whether the applicant has applied for the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC);
  • A brief summary of where the applicant is studying/working (provide a URL for a home page if one exists) and who the applicant’s advisor/supervisor is; any additional information the applicant feels is relevant to support their case;
  • A brief summary of research interests and plans for future research;
  • Why the conference attendance is important to the applicant’s research; and
  • A cost estimate of the trip, listing the cost of airfare, hotel, and the source of any price quote.
  • Optionally, a statement of how the applicant will increase the diversity of SIGCOMM’s attendees may be included.

The supervisor’s letter should be clearly divided in the following sections:

  • The applicant’s good standing in the institution;
  • Explain why the applicant would benefit from attending SIGCOMM as well as how he/she could contribute to the conference; and
  • Explain the current funding status and why the applicant is in need of the grant. It should also show commitment to supplement the travel award (to cover remaining costs) to enable the student to attend SIGCOMM.

Travel grants are provided by NSF and ACM SIGCOMM.

AMS Applicants

The AMS is pleased to offer travel grants for faculty from Emerging Research Institution (ERIs) or Minority Serving Institution (MSIs). These grants are being funded by generous support from the National Science Foundation. The AMS Annual Meeting is the world’s largest yearly gathering for the weather, water, and climate community. AMS brings together atmospheric scientists, professionals, students, authors, educators, researchers and weather enthusiasts from around the world to share and collaborate ideas about research. AMS meetings and conferences foster great minds from a diverse set of scientific disciplines - helping attendees make career-long professional contact and life-long friends while learning from the very top people in the weather, water, and climate community.

We invite applications from faculty at all career stages who can identify how participating in the AMS Annual Meeting will benefit their research, teaching, or departmental leadership and who would not be able to attend without this support. The AMS Faculty Travel Grant Program will cover conference registration, airfare, lodging, plus an allowance for meals. You do not need to be an AMS member to apply, but you will need to create an AMS profile. The application period has been extended to 15 December 2023. Any questions about the Faculty Travel Grant Program should be directed to Stephanie Armstrong, AMS Associate Executive Director at [email protected] .

Applicants must be employed full-time by a U.S. academic institution.

Travel Grants

Philosophy/outreach.

Travel grants are provided to assist those who might otherwise not be able to attend PyCon US. This includes major diversity and outreach programs through PyLadies and Python User Groups to attract new speakers, students, and attendees.

PyCon US has a large travel grant program funded by the PSF and PyLadies. Travel grant recipients receive support for some or all of their expenses, including transportation, lodging, and childcare. We actively encourage people to apply for travel grants and welcome applications from students. While we wish we could give grants to everyone who applies, our funds are limited.

Our goal is to get the most people to PyCon US by optimizing our funds.

  • Because PyCon US is the largest Python conference on Earth, it’s a meeting place for Python developers from around the world. Therefore, the travel grant award process is designed to enhance PyCon US by assisting all types of attendees, including speakers, tutorial presenters, and notable open-source contributors.
  • The travel grant program is one of the ways that the PSF supports a more diverse PyCon US.
  • The process attempts to support people with relatively lower incomes so that Pythonistas (both current and aspiring) from various locations, Python experience, and backgrounds can join the Python community.

In short, we use the travel grant budget to bring individuals to PyCon US who would otherwise not be able to attend the conference .

The travel grant program nurtures the community by making PyCon US more accessible. It is true to the spirit of PyCon US by helping to make the information and interactions available to everyone.

The mission of the Python Software Foundation is to promote, protect, and advance the Python programming language, and to support and facilitate the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers. We believe that the travel grant program is aligned with these goals.

Travel grants can cover costs such as mileage for attendees who travel to association events by car or plane tickets for attendees who arrive by air.  Grants can also cover hotels, meals, and conference related cab fare.

First time attendees and those on the job market or tenure track will receive priority consideration.  All grant recipients will be reimbursed for expenses after the conclusion of the relevant association event. For questions about the travel grant program or applications, contact  [email protected]

Eligibility

To be eligible for grant, you must:

  • Maintain your APSA membership through the date of the conference for which you are receiving travel grant funding
  • Reside more than 30 miles from the conference location - you are not eligible for a travel grant if you live within 30 miles of the conference site
  • APSA will not cover expenses that are not submitted without an itemized receipt

To accept the grant, APSA requires that all recipients complete and return a W-9 or W-8BEN tax form.

  • Form W-8BEN (for non-U.S. citizens)

  • You must also demonstrate that the cost of your mileage is less than the cost of a flight
  • As proof, APSA accepts a printed copy of the cost of a flight to the conference city on the days that you plan to travel and printed directions from sites like Google Maps as documentation
  • Hotels: The cost of a stay in a hotel, hostel, or other rented lodging such as Airbnb during the conference is covered
  • Meals: The cost of meals during the conference is covered

An APSA travel grant does not , however, cover any of the following costs:

  • Business or first-class tickets
  • Rental cars
  • Gasoline: Receipts for gas are not accepted - for APSA to cover the cost of a car trip to the conference, you must provide your mileage using the instructions above

FOSS4G 2023 Travel Grant Programme

OSGeo provides a Travel Grant Program (TGP) to facilitate accessibility and diversity at the global FOSS4G 2023 Conference, which will happen in Prizren, Kosovo, 26 June - 2 July 2023.

The TGP is administered by the Conference Committee (CC) and supported by members of the Prizren LOC (PLOC). Applications will be accepted until 15 April 2023.

Travel Grants

The Travel Grant will include a full conference ticket (including 2 workshop tracks) and a lump-sum contribution towards travel, accommodation or other expenses.

There will be 3 different sizes of travel grants available:

  • Applicants from Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro: 200 EUR
  • European Countries (not including countries from point 1): 400 EUR
  • Applicants from other countries : 800 EUR

The size and number of grants may be adjusted at the discretion of the Conference Committee, depending upon the level of funding raised and the number of applications received. Applicants will only be able to apply for one size of travel grant and are encouraged to apply for the smallest grant that will enable them to attend FOSS4G 2023.

Any person applying for more than one grant will be excluded from the application process.

In order to guarantee a transparent and fair allocation of funds, the travel grant programme uses a points system for ranking applications. Points are awarded if applicants match specific criteria. After the application phase is over, all applicants are ranked by points, and the applicants with the most points will receive funding.

Please note that the purpose of the travel grant programme is to enhance diversity at the conference. We might reserve a few programme spots for people with unique and outstanding applications. However, the majority of programme spots will solely be determined by the point ranking.

Applicants receive points for the following criteria:

Nationality

The allocation of points is based on the World Bank country rating by income ( https://datatopics.worldbank.org/world-development-indicators/the-world-by-income-and-region.html ).

  • Applicants from Low-income economies receive 1.5 points.
  • Applicants from Lower-middle-income economies receive 1 point.
  • Applicants from Upper-middle-income economies receive 0.5 point.
  • Applicants from High-income economies receive 0 point.
  • Applicants who are currently living in Low-income economies receive 1.5 points.
  • Applicants who are currently living in Lower-middle-income economies receive 1 point.
  • Applicants who are currently living in Upper-middle-income economies receive 0.5 point.
  • Applicants who are currently living in High-income economies receive 0 point.

Gender and Minorities

In order to create a more diverse community, women and applicants from other under-represented groups will receive 1 point.

Students in general receive 1 point. If a student also applied and is selected in the volunteer programme, 1 additional point is awarded. Phd students are considered as students.

*Students from Studentship Programme , group 1 are excluded from this grant and should consider applying for Studentship Grant for Western Balkans.

Submitted and Accepted Talks

ThePFLOC values applicants who are willing to contribute to the success of the FOSS4G. Therefore we award points for people who are willing to present at the conference. Only one presenting author will be eligible to receive points.

  • A talk submission that is accepted earns 3 points.
  • A talk submission that is not selected still earns 1 point.

OSGeo Software and Community

  • Details of their past contributions to OSGeo projects or community activities: 3 points
  • Demonstrated usage and experience with OSGeo software: 1 point

You must be able to fund the direct costs of your travel to FOSS4G and be in possession of a valid entry visa and immunization documents (if required). Successful applicants will receive a conference pass and become eligible for reimbursement of expenses up to the limit of the travel grant when they check-in at the conference registration desk. Reimbursement of expenses will be by electronic means (details to be advised).

Only in the case of demonstrated needs and exceptional cases, the travel grant amount will be provided in advance or used to cover specific travel costs directly.

Supporting the TGP

The travel grant program is funded through:

  • Conference sponsors
  • Sponsor donations, recognized as part of OSGeo sponsorship program
  • Annual commitment from the OSGeo board

You can help to make FOSS4G more accessible and increase the diversity of our attendees by making a donation to the FOSS4G TGP through the PayPal account of the OSGeo local chapter that is managing the conference.

Travel grants are made available by ISA to supplement travel costs for members presenting at the convention. The grants are not intended to cover all travel expenses. Applications closed on September 1st.

As is ISA’s normal practice and one of programs that makes us unique amongst our peer associations, ISA annually awards a large number of grants to aid participants in attending the ISA annual convention. We encourage all those in need to apply by the deadline of September 1st to be considered. Inevitably, not all applicants will receive funding, but we expect to provide funding to as many participants as possible and have established a number of basic thresholds for grant awards.

Award decisions will be announced in mid-October.

Travel Grant Policies

ISA has many policies for travel grants. Here are the key things to know:

  • In order to receive the travel grant funds after the Convention, you need to be a current ISA Member.
  • You need to provide receipts (preferably via e-mail) of your eligible expenses (usually flights, hotels, etc.).
  • You must check in with the travel grant desk at the Convention.
  • Deadline: September 1, 2022

Student Travel Grants

We are pleased to share that we are now accepting applications for student travel grants. Only in-person attendees who are full-time students will be considered for these grants. The final grant amount will be based on the available funding and the number of applicants. Based on the past experience, we anticipate that only a fraction of the total travel expenses will be covered by these grants.

The student travel grants will be used to support a selected group of

  • Student authors of accepted papers at IEEE WCNC 2023
  • Students from universities interested in attending the IEEE WCNC 2023program

Click on the form link below to start the application. Please have the following materials ready:

  • Student’s CV
  • IEEE membership number of the student. Applicants must be current Student Members of the IEEE Communications Society (not just IEEE student members) at the time they apply for the grant.
  • Applicants must register to attend WCNC 2023. If you have already registered, have your registation confirmation ready.  View more details .
  • A letter from the student including the title of the paper to appear at WCNC 2023. Briefly summarize your research interests and accomplishments to date, and include a statement about why the conference attendance is important for you.
  • An estimate of the travel costs, including conference registration, airfare, and hotel.
  • Supporting letter from the student's advisor. We ask that the advisor confirms that the student has full-time status and is in good academic standing at the given institution.

We encourage participation from underrepresented groups and diverse institutions across all geographical regions. Women, minorities, beginning graduate students, and first-time conference attendees, are especially encouraged to apply. Only complete applications will be given full consideration. A complete application is defined as one in which all materials required for the travel grant decision have been received before the deadline. Grant recipients will be reimbursed after the conference after submitting receipts and a brief survey form of their experience at IEEE WCNC 2023.

Organizing Committee

Workflow manager, logistics and it, mission statement.

The Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to foster the exchange of research advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, principally by hosting an annual interdisciplinary academic conference with the highest ethical standards for a diverse and inclusive community.

About the Conference

The conference was founded in 1987 and is now a multi-track interdisciplinary annual meeting that includes invited talks, demonstrations, symposia, and oral and poster presentations of refereed papers. Along with the conference is a professional exposition focusing on machine learning in practice, a series of tutorials, and topical workshops that provide a less formal setting for the exchange of ideas.

Half a century after the fall of the Greek junta, the country's democracy is being tested.

Studies show that Greek youth is losing faith in democratic politics, and millennials are more disillusioned with democracy than any generation in living memory. What is the role of the youth in shaping Greece's democratic trajectory? What political, socioeconomic, and environmental issues are relevant to young Greeks today?

Join us to discuss the country's agenda for the future, and how students - on both sides of the Atlantic - can become more civically engaged.
