Sacrifice tour dates: 3 concerts in USA

About sacrifice.

Sacrifice is a Canadian thrash metal band from Toronto, Ontario. The band was formed by guitarists Rob Urbinati and Joe Rico in 1983. Sacrifice played a prominent role in the 1980s underground metal scene in Toronto, and along with Voivod, Razor and Annihilator, they are considered one of the "Big 4" of Canadian thrash metal. The band released four studio albums before parting ways in 1993. After coming back together to play a reunion concert in 2006, they released their fifth studio album The Ones I Condemn on Brazilian label Marquee Records in 2009. Although the band faced numerous lineup changes, especially in their early days, founding guitarists Urbinati, Rico and bassist Scott Watts recorded every studio album and demo and drummer Gus Pynn on everything but the Apocalypse Inside demo and CD.

Tedeschi Trucks Band Breaks Out “Soul Sacrifice” In Baltimore [Photos/Videos]

After jamming with Duane Betts in Washington D.C. earlier in the week, Tedeschi Trucks Band traveled to Maryland for a show at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre on Saturday evening.

After opening with “Last Night in the Rain”, TTB began to dig in to its back catalog with the first “Signs, High Times” in nearly a year. The bust-outs continued throughout the night, with the band’s first cover of  Roosevelt Sykes ‘ “44 Blues” since March 2022 arriving late in the first set following a string of covers including Eddie Kirkland ‘s “I Must Have Done Somebody Wrong” and The Wood Brothers ‘ “Smoke Ring Halo”. An odyssey through the Trucks-led I Am the Moon instrumental “Pasaquan” brought the first set to a powerful conclusion.

The second set also featured a few fun covers including Wet Willie ‘s “Keep On Smilin'”, which was followed by a seamless pairing of “Fall In” and The Allman Brothers Band ‘s “Come and Go Blues”. TTB finished the set with an unexpected transition from “I Want More” into Santana ‘s “Soul Sacrifice”, played for the first time since May 2023, instead of its recent go-to sparring partner, “Beck’s Bolero”.

For the encore, the band broke out a pair of  Sly & the Family Stone medley last performed at Madison Square Garden during the monumental Garden Parties run (“Sing a Simple Song” > “I Want to Take You Higher”).

TTB’s tour continues tonight with the first of two shows in Richmond, VA. The band just added a batch of Deuces Wild  tour dates . For a full list of upcoming shows and to purchase tickets, visit the band’s website .

Interview with Brand of Sacrifice

George Archibald

Photos by: Andrew Bastion

Hitting the scene with 2018’s  The Interstice ,  Brand of Sacrifice  have been a staple of extreme deathcore. Mixing elements of progressive metal with electronics and synths, the band has created a rather unique sound that many of trying to recreate.  Brand of Sacrifice  started as a side project from the band  The Afterimage  and has grown in popularity due to itsheavy breakdowns, and technical riffs. The band released  God Hand  in 2019 to much acclaim seating them as one of the gotobands for the deathcore genre.  Brand of Sacrifice  is currently out on  The Melancholy Winter Tour  with  Shadow of Intent, Signs of the Swarm and  Inferi   going throughout the month of January. I was able to sit down with vocalist  Kyle Anderson  to learn more about this metal juggernaut that is  Brand of Sacrifice .

GA:  can you tell me a little about the band and its history?

KA : The band started out as a side project, my main band at the time was  The Afterimage .  Brand of Sacrifice  was started just for fun. We wanted to put out a stupid heavy ep just to have a good time, and maybe put out the one record and that would be it. I decided I wanted to make it a themed album based off my favorite manga called  Berserk . The album ended up gaining some headway, and here we are today touring as  Brand of Sacrifice  instead of  The Afterimage . It is crazy for me, because I never thought that would happen, and how things came about.

GA:  The band made waves with the release of  The Interstice in 2018, and followed up with 2019’s  God Hand , how has the latest album been received by fans?

KA:  It has been crazy; I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I knew people enjoyed our first EP, so we had to put out a well thought out album. I didn’t know how the reception would be. The reaction has been incredible, each time we tour the fans go crazier and crazier. I am really thankful and humbled by it all. It has been a wild ride.

GA:  When coming up with new material what is your process?

KA : Currently our other guitarist (Michael Leo Valeri) is out on tour with the band, he will be with us when we go to Europe though. Leo and I have always written music together, we have worked together since 2013. We were both in  The Afterimage and he wrote a lot of that material. Over all this time we have meshed well as a collaborative writing group. So, Leo writes most of the instrumentation, and he also mixes and masters the recordings. I will do all the vocals and lyrics myself, while putting my input on the instrumental side of things.

GA:  This is the kickoff date for The Melancholy Winter Tour, what’s it like for you to kick off a tour and how do you prepare?

KA : To prepare, we generally like to jam a week before hitting the road. The first day of tour is always a little hectic, because you are getting in all your merchandise orders and trying to get used to being on tour again, since we have been home for awhile and used to relaxing. As soon as tour gets going it is a great time. I am having a great time now, just got to get over the initial set up moments. Everyone has been very nice and welcoming.  Signs of the Swarm  are some of our best friends. They took us out on their first headlining tour, which was our first ever tour. We are really happy to be out on tour with them again this soon.

GA:  The re  has been a resurgence of heavy  death metal /death core over the last few years, what do you think are some ways  BoS  stand s  out from the other bands in the genre?

KA:  I think it is because we have a background in progressive metalcore; we have a slightly different approach to this style of music. Leo started in technical death metal originally, he was in a band called  Ascariasis , their record had maybe two breakdowns on the whole record and the rest of it was all speedy shred riffs. Then he joined a band called  The Northern , which was somewhat shreddy when he joined them, then he joined  The Afterimage . So, he didn’t really come from deathcore, but I think it offers a unique perspective to our music.  Brand of Sacrifice  likes to incorporate electronics and synths, which is slightly different from our peers; especially when we mix those elements with the more slam styled riffs.

GA:  With 2019 just passing, what were some albums from last year that were stand outs to you ?

KA : For 2019, I will have to say  Issues – Beautiful Oblivion , was one of my favorite albums of last year; the new  Cattle Decapitation – Death Atlas  album as well. I really like the new  I, Prevail  album  Trauma . I also like to listen to a lot of poppy metalcore as well. I try to keep up to date on the deathcore stuff,  Vital Deprivation  (Signs of the Swarm), and  Melanchol y (Shadow of Intent) and the new  Rings of Saturn  record are all awesome too. There was a ton of good albums that came out last year for deathcore, my two favorites though are the  I, Prevail , and  Issues  records.

GA: Being a vocalist ar e you self-taught, or did you take lessons?

KA : I started off watching  The Zen of Screaming  videos by  Melissa Cross , to try and develop a foundation. Then I watched a few of  Phil Bozeman’s  (Whitechapel) videos on YouTube. I started to practice on my own and tried to uncover techniques myself, then went from there. I had a good foundation thanks to those two.

sacrifice band tour

GA:  Do you have any preshow rituals, or warm up routines you like to do before hitting the stage?

KA : I like to make sure I have had something small to eat before performing. I try not to eat heavy, because then I feel bloated and gassy onstage which no one wants to go through. I also recommend lot of water, sometimes I will have some throat coating tea. I sometimes will also go through doing some E’s and O’s to warming up with growls and high screams. I used to get extensive warming up with the Melissa Cross exercises but found that this does the trick to where I haven’t had any issues. I also want to make sure I get plenty of vitamin C, I am starting to get sick already which is not good.

GA:  What is next for the band after this tour?

KA : We will be going to Europe with  Rings of Saturn ,  Enterprise Earth , and  Traitors.  That is going to happen about 3 weeks after this tour ends, we will be flying out to Germany to kick off that tour. After that tour ends, we are trying to get something locked in for another project called  Earthshatter .  It is a new project; our first EP just came out on Monday (1/13/2020). It is kind of like  Knocked Loose , and  Varials  mixed with  Issues , and more poppy metalcore stuff. It is really heavyand grungy on the hardcore metalcore side, but it’s got soaring melodies.

GA:  If someone wanted to follow the band where can they keep up with you on social media, and if they wanted to support the band buy purchasing merch where is your online store located?

KA : If you go to  Brandofsacrifice.com , you will find all of our socials as well as our merch store. We have our own merch store which is operated by the band itself. All of the money goes back to the band from your purchases. We also have an Indiemerchstore and a European merch store we work with. There are different items available through each store, but we do operate our own, so please go directly through that one.

GA:  Anything else you would like to add?

KA:  I want to say thankyou for having me, and I can’t wait to see more friendly faces at the shows. Come and say what’s up.

JOURNEY ROCKS BALTIMORE

Ron

Where does the band name come from?  Wanting to be the best version of yourself at all times. The name is a reminder to hold ourselves accountable.

How is the music scene in Michigan?  The Michigan music scene has always been vibrant and in my opinion, important. Do we get the credit we deserve? Absolutely not. But for the state that brought you Motown, Eminem, Lizzo, The White Stripes, I Prevail and so many other incredible artists – it’s kind of hard to believe that Michigan remains a hidden gem.

How’s the reception from the fans of the latest album “Omen”?  It’s been incredible. From seeing people singing along at shows to us seeing new supporters of all different ages, colors, and creeds joining the journey. Omen has been a pivotal album in our career and we’re proud of it!

If you could tour with 2 bands, which bands would you want to tour with?  Spiritbox and Bad Omens. They’re both making waves, changing who the metal audience is, and surely they’d be fun to hang around with.

Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics?  Honestly, the lyrics are our stories. The stories of our struggles, our trials and our tribulations.

What’s been your favorite tour or show?  We just got off of a tour with our labelmates, Any Given Day. They treated us to a handful of sold out shows over in Europe, which at this point we call our second home. Those were great shows, but any show we’ve done in Europe is typically one for the books!

If you could bring back a dead musician, who would it be?  Prince for sure. An incredible musician I would love an opportunity to chat or make music with!

Ron

Ron has keen eye for new talent, a love for the underground, and a tremendous passion for music of any genera. You’ll probably bump into him at a horror convention or some seedy club checking out the next need-to-know band.

INTERVIEW WITH TWIN TEMPLE

sacrifice band tour

Being Married and being in a band together. Do you feel that makes it easier or harder?

We love to do the Devil’s work together so for us its a match made in hell.

What’s your favorite horror movie?

That’s hard to narrow down but the first few that come to mind are Rosemary’s Baby, The Devil Rides Out, Wickerman, The Devils Reign featuring Anton Lavey, Mario Bava’s Black Sunday, anything starring Vincent Price. We also got to see an advance screen of “Late Night with the Devil” featuring a very evil performance from our friend Dave Dastmalchian. We’re also looking forward to Bryan Fuller’s “Dust Bunny” and are positive it will be a new favorite. The list goes on…..we are huge horror fans.

Favorite Non Horror Movie?

Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (which is horror/noir adjacent) and The Burbs (also horror adjacent…haha.)

All of Quentin Tarantino’s films- our latest favorite is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, because 1960’s LA…

What misconception of Satanists would you like to educate people on?

We’re not here to proselytize, force our beliefs on people, or educate people on them Selves, Satanism or anything else. If people are interested in exploring Satanism, we encourage them to do their research and question everything.

If you could bring back any dead musician, who would you pick and why?

We would have loved to do a song with Ronnie Spector who recently passed. Also would have been amazing to collaborate with Jack Nitzsche who arranged so many amazing songs.

If you could tour with any 2 bands, who would you want to tour with?

The Ronnettes & The Shangri-Las.

What has been your Favorite Tour so far?

The God is Dead Tour that we’re currently on is definitely the most evil and blasphemous tour yet. We find it very pleasurable to be able to continue expanding the rituals and seeing our nightmares come true on stage.

You were on “Dragula” with the Boulet Brothers, how was that experience?

It was a fiendish delight to collaborate with some of our fav monsters.

What was it like Touring with Danzig?

Another nightmare come true! We’ve both been fans for a long time and we’re obviously inspired by the wicked world Glenn has conjured. So to get to spend time with him and watch him live every night and to now call him a friend is completely surreal. He’s a legend— but was also one of the coolest, kindest, most unholy people we’ve had the carnal pleasure of touring with.

How’s the reception of the last album “God is Dead”?

Personally, we love the record and are very proud of what we’ve accomplished. As far as other peoples’ reactions…. we don’t know and don’t care! We pleasured ourselves and that’s what matters most.

What got you interested in the style of music you play? And how would describe your music?

We’ve always loved classic American music from jazz to blues to country to rock and roll and so on. We also love the pageantry of heavy metal and theatre. So for us it was a very organic culmination of our obsessions. Rock and roll has always been the devils music.

sacrifice band tour

Have you visited the Satanic Temple in Massachusetts?

No we have not but Lucien did attend one of our rituals so we had a chance to share where we get our babies blood and all things Satan.

Have you had any bad encounters at shows because of the misconception of satanism?

No! We purposefully foster a live show environment where all are welcome, all should come being the most important person in the world which is themselves, whatever that may be. Even Christians! We believe music is meant to bring joy, transcendence… We just want to share the things we love; pink, rhinestones, big hair, great rock ’n’ roll, Satanic ritual, you know…  but we have had churches assemble outside our shows, screaming through distorted PA speakers that God is not dead & wishing us all a “terrible time”.  Why would their God not want us to have fun? This kind of behavior is only makes us more proud to be who we are and do what we love.

The Best and Cringiest of Creed, According to Scott Stapp

sacrifice band tour

Creed, the critically maligned, platinum-selling rock group of early-2000s fame, is in the midst of an unexpected renaissance. “Higher” became the Texas Rangers’ unofficial anthem on the way to their 2023 World Series win; SZA recently shouted them out in an interview (“That shit is bomb! Why do you all hate it so much?”); and they even showed up in a 2024 Super Bowl commercial . Once the butt of butt-rock jokes, it seems the band has finally turned the page on its reputation as an overly earnest, quasi-preachy riff monster. “All these viral moments started happening, and we suddenly saw a swell of new love from our core fan base all the way to a generation that wasn’t even born,” during our commercial peak, singer Scott Stapp says in amazement.

Stapp is the first to admit Creed’s rise was an unusually fast one. In the months following its independently released 1997 debut, My Own Prison , the Florida band was selling out amphitheaters across the country; its follow-up, Human Clay, topped the charts and sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. But outsize record sales did little to mollify critics, and fame soon took its toll on Stapp, who went through his share of personal challenges, including a yearslong drug addiction, assault charges, and homelessness. After the band disbanded in 2012, he kept a relatively low profile, finally getting sober in 2014 and releasing a pair of solo albums.

This summer, Stapp and his Creed bandmates (guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, drummer Scott “Flip” Phillips) will revisit their late-’90s apex by headlining a much-hyped reunion tour. Stapp says they toyed for years with the idea of getting back together, but decided to officially reunite after a resurgence of interest in the group became too palpable to ignore. “The tidal wave started coming in and more opportunities started getting offered to the band,” he says. But first, Stapp is releasing new solo music, with his fourth album, Higher Power , out March 15. To hear him tell it, the reemergence of Creed in his life is both surprising and a bit overwhelming. “I thought 2024 was going to be a full year of solo touring and promotion of the Higher Power album,” Stapp says. “But God had another plan.”

Song Whose Meaning Has Changed the Most for You

I could say that about quite a few songs. “With Arms Wide Open” would be one of those. My hope in that song was to not pass down certain things that had unfortunately been done to me in my life. Being a father of four and now a grandfather, I didn’t want to pass down physical abuse, psychological abuse, emotional abuse, drug addiction — all the challenges I had when I was a kid. Now every time I sing it, I connect with it like it’s the first time. It’s like I have a more expanded knowledge of what I was talking about at 25 as opposed to 50.

Same with “One Last Breath.” When those lyrics were written, I thought I had reached a low. I hadn’t even reached close to a low; that was pediatric-level low. When I sing that song now as opposed to 2001, there’s just so much more life experience I’ve lived. When you get to the chorus, I say, “Sad eyes follow me / But I still believe there’s something left in me.” And holding on to that hope, no matter what, has been the story of my life. It’s the only thing that’s ever worked.

Even “Higher.” This was a song written about heaven. Mark reminded me that I wrote the chorus as a freestyle during a show. I kind of had a download during the set in front of thousands of people. I came off tour as I was crafting the verses during a time when I was really trying to explore myself as a spirit being. Now, at this stage in my life, understanding the realities of the world that I was so naïve to when I was younger, I have a different perspective. In my youth, I’m crying out to heaven to “take me higher.” Today, it still has that same meaning, but it also has evolved into having this 24,000-foot astronaut view. I’m seeing things pretty clearly at this point in my career.

Hardest Album to Make

sacrifice band tour

Without a shadow of a doubt, the new solo album. Mainly because of what was going on in my life at the time: I had injuries — both knees, both elbows, some I don’t even want to share — and other family members had medical crises. The studio is my safe haven. But everything around me was getting in the way of recording. It was a bit of an obsession that, no matter what came my way, I was going to get in there and do it. I really felt like it was a fight. There were times I was in the studio on crutches. Looking back, I’m like: How did I even muster up the ability to get out what was in me at the time? I think it made for a very powerful record that captured the struggle and the journey I was on.

Best Part of Recording Human Clay

The majority of that record was written on the road during sound check. We only had ten songs on My Own Prison , and we instantly started out as a headliner. Having only ten songs to play wasn’t going to cut it. That wasn’t even an hour. So we had to create on the fly. We were introducing these new songs to our fans as we were writing them at sound check just so we could meet our contracted set time. And then we got off that tour, and the experience in creating that record was incredible. We were given so much love and support and freedom by Alan and Diana Meltzer, the owners of our label, Wind-Up Records. We were allowed to be artists. We rented a big house. We had our producer, John Kurzweg. And we just jammed. It was a beautiful experience. Same with Weathered . We had no financial worries. All we had to worry and think about was just being artists.

The Moment You Knew Creed Had Made It

There are so many. I mean, selling out Madison Square Garden, opening the 2002 Olympics live on NBC, playing on top of the Rio for the Billboard Awards. Saturday Night Live , walking by the dressing room with Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton and realizing you’re in the same space as those people. Also, Human Clay went diamond around the same month Joshua Tree went diamond. It blew my mind that we did it in two years, and it took at least a decade for an album I thought was one of the greatest of all time. And that’s still sinking in. That’s still hard to process.

Most Difficult Song to Sing

I was fortunate to have an incredible producer in John Kruzweg. He said, “Scott, I got a feeling you’re going to be singing these songs for a long time, so let’s put them in a key that’s not going to kill your voice.” I wish I would have followed his advice on my solo records because I’ve got a lot of solo songs that are very taxing. On a couple Creed songs, like “One Last Breath,” I’ve got to hit an A that’s at the peak of my range. But as a whole, the Creed songs aren’t taxing on my voice. They’re right in my pocket.

Solo Song That Could Have Worked As a Creed Single

“Great Divide” and “Surround Me” would have really gone far as Creed songs. Same with “Proof of Life.” “Name,” on my last record, The Space Between the Shadows, would have been really profound and connected with millions of people had Creed played it. These songs also would have worked better because of the Creed brand — it would have given them more exposure — and the idiosyncrasies and brilliance of the musicians in Creed would have elevated them. Mark would have added his signature trademark licks, Brian his brilliant bass playing, and then Flip — he is such a solid drummer and adds a dynamic and punch no one can duplicate.

Favorite Bad Review

I made a decision at one point that I wasn’t going to read anything good and I wasn’t going to read anything bad. Anything that I heard was either through my manager or someone brought it up to me. I think at one point, I told them, “I don’t want to know. Let me stay in this little bubble so I can keep doing what I’m doing.” Because I realized when I did pay attention, it hurt. I was actually affected mentally and emotionally by it. And it wasn’t healthy. So I had to cut myself off from it.

Biggest Misconception About Creed

I could be wrong, but it wasn’t the fans who created the bad narrative about us, it was the press. The fans and the public spoke by buying over 50 million records in six years. And so the narrative was kind of a manufactured one. I think it was because we didn’t fit into the clique. We were kind of outsiders. And so we were easy targets. I was full of spit and vinegar. Not knowing how to handle it all. That wasn’t part of the rock-and-roll dream. Everything else was — the sales, how we were embraced by the fans. But when the press turned, some time in the middle of Human Clay , we went from being “Creed saves rock and roll” to being hated. I didn’t know how to handle that at the time. In terms of any haters that are out there, I look at it like they are the fringes. There’s so much love — 85 to 90 percent love. It’s the loud voices on the far left and right — same with politics — that seem to get the most attention. And also, in terms of the press, I don’t know if they really dug into our records and realized we were a much different band than our singles represented.

Song That Should Have Gone As High on the Charts As “Higher”

Every song I thought would reach that level did. “Arms Wide Open” “One Last Breath” “My Sacrifice” — they all reached that same level as “Higher.” I can’t think off the top of my head any songs that we missed on.

Cringiest Song

There are a couple songs that, sonically, I wish the presentation was one; the whole band felt that way. In particular, a song called “One.” That song we always felt a little bit like … Is this cheesy? A little too bouncy? But we kept it anyway and stood behind the message.

Weirdest Awards Show Experience

I have quite a few incredible memories of the 2001 Grammy Awards. I’ll never forget seeing these four six-foot-eight, 320-pound security guys walking by and then all of a sudden an arm reached out and touched my shoulder. It was Janet Jackson. She was very familiar with Human Clay . Knew it from top to bottom. And she was very complimentary and said some incredible things to me. And then getting to meet the Edge from U2 and seeing the dynamic of the Edge and Bono. U2 is probably my favorite band of all time; Joshua Tree is probably my favorite album of all time.

Because of where Creed was at the time, we thought, or least I thought, This is just what’s supposed to happen . When you get a record deal, you’re supposed to go No. 1. When you go No. 1, you’re supposed to play in arenas. When you play in arenas and you sell all these records, you’re supposed to win Grammys. I was so naïve about how fortunate we were and how rare this was and how it was akin to winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning.

Most Lasting Memory of the 2001 Thanksgiving Day Halftime Show

I tell ya, it was surreal. Growing up, I was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan. So to be able to play at the stadium, go to Cowboy practices, meet the Jones family, and meet the players — everything was a dream come true. And the flying men — honestly, we were just so wrapped up in the moment we didn’t think about having any involvement in the production. But you know what? Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. I love it. It introduced our music to an entire new generation through the lens of sarcasm. But it was the music that ended up catching them. I think what started out as kind of a jab at us has since turned into something that has connected with culture. It’s become evergreen, man. And that’s just a gift. It’s something to be thankful for. And the band, we’re now adults, we all get it, and we laugh at the same things that the fans point out that are funny and unique about it. But we’re also proud and grateful that we got to experience that. It comes up every Thanksgiving now. It’s like a Mariah Carey Christmas album.

Song That Defines You As a Solo Artist

The first song that came to my head was “Proof of Life.” I think the message and the lyrics kind of characterize how I felt my entire solo career — “Hey, I’m still here.” I just couldn’t reach the other side because of the wall, but my hand was poking through. It seems like the wall is falling down a little bit; I don’t wanna jinx what’s going on with the current solo album, but it’s like we’ve broken down the wall. We’ll see how it goes. Tying that in with the Creed tour also; rising tides raise all ships. It’s a good energy that’s going on right now.

Most Surprising Part About Reuniting With Creed

The public’s reaction. What’s gone on the last three years in terms of just this “organic” resurgence of Creed connecting with a new generation of fans. And also highlighting all these fans who were maybe at a time in their life, mid-teens, who really wanted to see us play and didn’t get to. It’s been profound. I think that’s the catalyst that helped us cross over and say, “Let’s do this!” We had had conversations before about reuniting, but in my gut it didn’t feel right; it felt rushed. The fans let us know: We’re here . And that has generated so much positivity that it’s rubbed off on the band. All of our interactions have been positive, chill, good vibes. I think we’ve all had arduous journeys in our own right: tirelessly working, almost like starting over on our solo projects. The Creed rise was meteoric, and for my solo career I was back in the clubs, man. It’s almost like things happened backward for us. A lot of artists worked 10, 15, 20 years to get their break. Well, with Creed it was [snaps] like that. In an instant. Twelve months. And so I think we reversed the process, and when we split away from Creed, we went and paid our dues. So it feels good to be back.

Singer Nathan Willett says he rarely ever paused to think about the history of Cold War Kids , the indie rock band he and three friends started in an apartment over an Italian restaurant in Fullerton in 2004.

There were albums to make, concerts to play, and publicity to do – like this phone interview before a recent Cold War Kids show in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“Strangely, I’ve spent so little time looking back,” he says. “But this 20 Years Tour, I’m spending more time working just on how we did it.

“We played a show in Austin at Stubbs, and I was reminded,” Willett says. “We were that story where we went to South By Southwest and found our booking agent and our lawyer and our first label. Like, it all happened right there. Those people are still in our lives. It’s really wild.

“So yeah, that was just like a totally electric time that was very special. Like a total shared vision and all this stuff.”

Cold War Kids ‘ 20 Years Tour comes home this month for a pair of shows at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood and a third night at Pappy & Harriett’s in Pioneertown.

There’s a terrific recent record, the band’s 10th studio album, which, oddly, is the first to be self-titled.

The title, Willett explains, is reflective of a rock band that’s reached middle age. While two of the original members left years ago, Willett and bassist Matt Maust have been Cold War Kids throughout, and the current five Cold War Kids, who have been together for the last 10 years or so, continue to feel right, he says.

“I think the record in a way, even the reason for calling it self-titled, a lot of it was just being able to kind of embrace that renewal or full circle,” Willett says of an album that sounds as powerful and fresh as the band’s 1996 debut, “Robbers & Cowards,” or 2014’s “Hold My Home.”

“To be where we are now, and to be on this 20 Years Tour, it’s really special,” Willett says. “We’ve had just a tremendous fortune.”

Making the band

In high school and junior college, Willett played guitar and listened to music obsessively, believing that somewhere over the horizon he’d find his rock and roll life.

“I had almost a weird, almost ill-fated feeling about music,” he says. “I had friends in punk bands that went on tour and burned out very quickly. That was a very, very, very Orange County and Southern California type of thing that was happening around us.

“I had even been asked to join bands and I was always so reluctant to play with certain people because I just didn’t feel like it was the right thing,” Willett says. “”My brother and my best friend growing up had this band, Death By Stereo , and they asked me to join. It was kind of more like a thrashy punk band. I was just like, ‘That’s not who I am.’

“At the same time, it was so painful to let something pass by. I was like, ‘Maybe this is my only shot at ever doing music.’”

Then Willett transferred to Biola University for the final two years of college, and suddenly, to his surprise, he found friends from which Cold War Kids would eventually emerge.

“I was going to this Christian college out in this weird little zone between Orange County and L.A.,” Willett says. “I thought, ‘I’m gonna spend two years here and I’m not going to really meet anybody, and that will just be like a tiny footnote in my life.

“And, of course, the thing that happened there was this big group of friends, all these kind of art-school kids that I had never been exposed to before,” he says. “The range of music that they were listening was all this stuff that I had kind of known, but didn’t really have anybody that really openly celebrated such obscure music like the Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart to the Smiths and all this blues and gospel and punk.

“It was just like, ‘Oh, these are my people.’ It was a huge shock to me.”

Still, Willett was 24 and working toward a teaching credential before he, Maust, drummer Matt Aveiro and guitarist Jonnie Russell formed Cold War Kids in Russell’s apartment above the Mulberry Street restaurant in downtown Fullerton.

“I was substitute teaching and it wasn’t until I kind of hit the point where I was like, ‘Man, I don’t want to do this at all,’” Willett says. “‘I don’t want to do anything else other than, like, we just need to start a band.’”

Family lives

For most of the past decade, the Cold War Kids lineup has been stable. Drummer Joe Plummer and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Schwartz became full-time members with Willett and Maust around 2014. Guitarist David Quon completed the current lineup when he joined in 2016.

For Willett, changes in the band over time were necessary if not always easy.

“The changing of the lineup over the years has been some of the toughest transitions,” he says. “For me, becoming that kind of leader that makes those decisions about what’s going to work, and how it’s going to work, and keeping it all going has been some of the toughest things.

“You’re in a place where business and friendship and art are all just deeply tied in a way that I haven’t really seen in any other type of job I see anywhere else,” Willett says. “It’s all in the blender.

“So now, the five of us, it’s almost come full circle in that we have this incredible chemistry and great understanding and appreciation of each other.”

The band is a family with all the responsibilities and rights the term implies, Willett says.

“You can’t have tension where you’re against each other or an awkwardness where you can’t talk about certain things,” he says. “You have to get those things out in the open. And at the same time, you know it’s not perfect. You live with a degree of just understanding in the way that you’re family.”

At 44, Willett also has a family outside of his work, a home life with his wife and three daughters between the ages of 3 and 9.

“To have this life and that life, there’s not a lot of people I can think of that I can go, ‘Oh, I like how that person is doing this thing of having a family and being an artist,’ and it looks like something I really want.

“You know, you don’t see VH1 ‘Behind the Music’ and see a story of a really successful group that also has a really successful personal life, and such a rich kindness, grace and love, and that’s the end of the story,” Willett says, laughing. “How boring would that be? It just never goes that way. There is a reason.”

Same but different

“Cold War Kids,” the new album, reflects the maturity of a band, and in Willett, a songwriter, that has worked to balance life and work.

The album opener, “Double Life,” finds him singing about gender roles in a family, a reflection of his understanding of the sacrifice his wife makes when he’s on the road, and the work he wants to embrace when he’s home with their children.

“Another Name,” one of Willett’s favorites on the record, is a different kind of breakup song, written after his therapist of many years told him she was leaving her practice and would no longer be able to see him.

“Runaway With Me” is a joyful soul-funk number with a huge chorus, a song that Willett says incorporates influences such as Sly Stone and David Bowie, while not losing its essential Cold War Kids-ness.

The album was made with the intention of shaking things up in the studio, he says. Longtime producer Lars Stalfors stepped aside as Willett sought out a variety of different producers from different backgrounds and genres.

He also slowed down the pace at which the band has worked, taking time to make one of the band’s most cohesive albums yet.

“I like to move fast and I like to keep music coming,” Willett says. “I think I’ve always resisted being the kind of artist that has three years between records, and he’s always kind of trying to paint your masterpiece. I realized pretty early on that I don’t have an ‘OK Computer’ [the classic Radiohead album] in me. I don’t think that’s going to come out.”

The eclectic team of producers Willett pulled into the studio included Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, M83), Ethan Grushka (Phoebe Bridgers, Weezer), Jenn Decilveo (Miley Cyrus, Hozier), and Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde).

“I wanted to find these people that were not necessarily known for this genre or that, but had worked on records that I really liked,” Willett says. “A lot of that for me was just going, OK, good, and having to go in with a producer like Malay, who’s done Frank Ocean and stuff that I put on the highest shelf, and feel like I’m going to get the best from him and I don’t have to be afraid it’s going to be something that isn’t right for Cold War Kids.”

“Knowing that we haven’t done these kinds of things before, and that it’s very new sonically, that’s the stuff that makes this really exciting and surprising,” he says. “Like, wow, there’s still ways to make songs that I can feel that first feeling again.”

Shared today (March 7), the new single comes as the latest teaser for the band’s upcoming seventh album ‘Light Verse’. It is set for release on Sub Pop on April 26, and has already been previewed by the release of lead single ‘You Never Know’.

Titled ‘All In Good Time’, the second taster of the LP sees the band join forces with Fiona Apple for a solemn, stripped-back song, which explores themes of betrayal and patience.

“ All in good time, I gave it my best/ I was alone ’til I found myself/ Grew up to be a man more or less/ All in good time, ” sings Sam Beam in the opening lines, before Apple chimes in: “ All in good time, I drifted away/ I ran my mouth ’til I’d nothing to say/ You broke my heart, then I was okay/ All in good time. ”

“Her voice is a miracle that sounds like both a sacrifice and a weapon at the same time,” said Beam of working with the ‘90s legend (via Stereoboard ).

Check out the moving track in full below, and visit here to pre-order the album.

As well as sharing the latest preview of their seventh album, Iron & Wine have also announced details of a UK and European tour, which is set to kick off later this year.

Comprising of 16 shows – eight of which are in the UK – the new run of dates will run through the latter half of the year, and follow a previously-scheduled North American leg of the tour.

Starting two months after they wrap up the US shows in Nashville (August 24), the first of the new dates will take place at the Mandela Hall in Belfast on October 22, followed by a slot at the Vicar Street venue in Dublin the next day.

From there, the UK shows run up until the end of the month and comprise shows in Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and London, before wrapping up at the Junction in Cambridge on October 31.

The European tour dates all take place throughout the first half of November, and launch with an opening night in Copenhagen. Other gigs across the continent include shows in Stockholm, Oslo, Hamburg, Amsterdam and more, and come to a close with a show in Antwerp on November 15.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (March 8) at 10am local time. Visit here to buy yours and check out a full list of new tour dates below.
