Private charters from tower bridge quay (st. katharine pier), about tower bridge quay.

Tower Bridge Quay (formerly St. Katharine Pier) is located on the North shore of the River Thames at St. Katharine Dock, a short walk from the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the Tower of London. The dock opened in 1828 & was once popular with expensive cargo’s from around the world including ivory, shells, sugar, marble, wines, fragrant spices & perfumes. Today St. Katharine’s is a haven for yachts & historic vessels including traditional Thames sailing barges. A wide range of cafes, bars & restaurants are located at St. Katharine’s & regular food markets also take place throughout the week.

St. Katharine Dock was designed by the Scottish engineer Thomas Telford (known as the Colossus of Roads due to his extensive experience building roads) & completed in 1828. St. Katharine Dock takes its name from “St. Katharine’s by the Tower”, a medieval hospital which stood on the site.

Extensive bomb damage during the Blitz limited the capacity of the dock & with the increasing size of cargo vessels during the industrial revolution the dock eventually closed.

Just on the edge of the City of London St. Katharine Dock is closely situated to a number of landmarks including Tower Bridge, the Tower of London & the Monument.

1. Tower suites by Blue Orchid (close to tower bridge and has breakfast included in the price that works for me). Rooms seem a good size.

2. Park Plaza County Hall ( South bank , close to Waterloo station and breakfast included in the price that works for me). Rooms seem a goo size. A little more expensive than other two options.

3. Marlin Waterloo (South bank, close to Waterloo station , no breakfast but has a kitchenette)

I was almost sold on Tower Suites because of the stellar reviews and value for money, but it seems a bit far from most attractions which are around the Westminster area. My 6 year old takes time toi get over his jet lag, so it helps sometimes that we go back to the hotel and have him nap for an hour or two in the afternoon, and step out again. Is the location of Park Plaza or Marlin better? We have just 7 days and I would like to make the most of them, so hotel location is important. I don't want to spend too much time commuting from the hotel. At the same time, if the hotel is kid friendly and has comfortable rooms, that will really help. Any advice is highly appreciated.

We will be flying into Heathrow airport and will be taking a train to Edinburgh on the 8th day. We plan to spend couple days in Edimburgh and fly out from there.

Also, we. would like to be close to the touristy area and explore the city at night as well (maybe take strolls, make a stop for treats for kids etc.).

There is a small rather dreary Tesco Express in Mansell Street at Portsoken Street, but the better choice for a few items of food and drink is the Sainsbury's Local in Mansell Street at Alie Street.

There is a small play area near Tower Hill station and Tower Suites with the advantage of the Tower of London across the road and a large segment of Roman wall adjacent to the play area. The 254 from Aldgate bus station will take you and your children to the V&A Museum of Childhood near Bethnal Green station, should you wish to visit there (and let your sons run off some steam in the adjacent park) rather than visit the Cotswolds or Stonehenge, and there's always Shoreditch City Farm to visit as well.

Another vote for Tower Suites - I also have spent a decent bit of time in the area (not as much as TravellerPlus, alas) and agree with everything #4 said. For a week, you will appreciate the extra space for relaxing at night. You are also spoilt for choice for restaurants by St. Katherine Dock, although most are chain restaurants. Your kids will probably enjoy seeing the boats.

You are also perfectly placed for Tube from Tower Hill and Monument / Bank and boat (Thames Clippers) services.

Check out Thames RIB rides from Tower Pier out to the Thames Barrier - huge hit with kids and grown-ups alike.

You might want to consider a Historic Royal Palaces membership if you think you might want to visit the Tower of London more than once, or spread your visits over a couple of days, especially if Hampton Court Palace is on your itinerary (hope it is...it is a great day out). The membership will pay for itself this way.

if you want and have access to google maps, open it up and look at london. The do a search for your lodging and see its location.

you will see some of the attractions on the map too.

in any case, even with 7 days, you will have to use some form of transport to see various things.

when it comes to room and comfort. Thats so subjective. But consider, where will you spend most of your time? inside or outside?

depending on your kids diet or pickyness, you should be able to find places to eat/snack and so forth.

I also like the Waterloo area but Tower Suites would be my first pick. South Bank is really nice and has tons of dining.

All good advice. But given that choice, I'd book the Park Plaza.

Thank you. Would love to hear the reasons to go with Park Plaza
