Demi Lovato: Holy Fvck review – finally having fun

(Island) The US singer-songwriter shifts tack from last year’s trauma-led Dancing With the Devil, tapping into the pop-punk of her youthful debut

“A m I the only one looking for substance?” sings Demi Lovato on her new single – to which the answer is, obviously, no. But her search for “substance” takes on a sharply different tone given that Lovato recovered from a near-fatal overdose in 2018, preceded by addiction, an eating disorder and being raped as a teenager. The experiences were chronicled in 2021’s Dancing With the Devil album and documentary – although the music stuck to an oddly tasteful pop palette.

Holy Fvck signals a genuine shift. In the past year, Lovato has come out as non-binary, launched a sex toy and gone UFO-hunting in the desert; in short, it sounds like she’s finally having fun. The album harks back to the pop-punk sounds of her 2008 debut, Don’t Forget , with Skin of My Teeth pitched somewhere between McFly and Foo Fighters. But there are some thrillingly dark moments too, as on Eat Me (ft Royal & the Serpent), with its industrial grind, tempo shifts and raging yelps, and the pleasingly lusty Bones. Holy Fvck has its flaws – Lovato’s powerful voice is unnecessarily finessed and Auto-Tuned, and 16 tracks is too long. But its gutsy ambition is a thing of substance in and of itself.

WHEATLAND, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 22: (EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE) Demi Lovato performs onstage at Hard Rock...

Demi Lovato’s Holy Fvck Tour Is A Well-Deserved Triumph

On their Holy Fvck tour, Demi Lovato inspires a Beatlemania-like devotion from a crowd who has nothing but love for them.

Thirty minutes into Demi Lovato’s set, on their second night at the Beacon Theater in New York City for their Holy Fvck tour, the crowd was already calling for an encore.

“DE-MI, DE-MI,” the audience chanted as the pop star in punk rock regalia thanked her fans. The “DE-MI” chant happened at least two more times from a crowd that never let up in their devotion; Beatlemania-level shrieks permeated the gilded walls. I was sitting in the sixth row, center, and was the only one who didn’t know the lyrics to every song of Lovato’s hour and 15 minute set, in which they crammed about 20 songs from their catalogue from over the last 14 years, reimagined into punk rock headbangers.

And for an artist whose catalogue has been mostly shiny pop, there was a lot of head banging. I lost an earring during their famous gay anthem and set closer “Cool For The Summer.” But the real head-banging stars were Lovato’s bassist and former Alice Cooper guitarist, Nita Strauss, who, at any given moment, was relentlessly shredding with enough vigor to warrant their own headlining shows. Seeing five women onstage in corsets, leather, dangling crosses, and pleated skirts making urgent music about being angry and surviving did more work to heal my inner child than most therapy sessions.

For as good as Lovato is at glistening vocal runs and shiny pop, they are a survivor. The girl has almost died, again and again, and at the end of the day isn’t just surviving, but excavating demons, and helping other people excavate their own — which explains fans’ fierce protection and celebration of Lovato. Not one song passed without someone loudly screaming “We love you Demi!” as if to say, keep going .

Demi Lovato performing at the Holy Fvck show in New York City.

The Holy Fvck show was night and day from the last time I saw Lovato 14 years ago, when they opened for the Jonas Brothers at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. Their first album Don’t Forget hadn’t even come out yet. My friend and I were 15 years old and met them at a meet and greet event sponsored by Verizon Wireless, and when they told my friend they liked our outfits (Urban Outfitters plaid mini-dresses, leg warmers, and denim high-top Converse), it made the next six months of our lives. This was a month after Lovato’s career-launching Camp Rock was released. (A piece of culture the singer will never escape, for better or for worse. I overheard a security guard tending to the restrooms say, “I hope they play ‘This Is Me’ tonight.”)

In 2008, we had nosebleed seats, the crowd was thin for Lovato, and we were mostly deeply jealous they got to hang out with the Jonas Brothers. “So much has happened since then,” that same friend said to me as we watched Lovato from the sixth row last night. But 14 years didn’t stop my brain from unlocking the box that holds the lyrics to every one of their early songs, which I found myself compelled to sing along to during a three-song stretch that included “La La Land” and “Don’t Forget.” Those songs felt like a lifetime ago, for all of us. Lovato’s voice can still flex into Disney pop and the shiny, bratty pop of songs like “Confident,” but where they feels most at home is in their pop punk era. The girl can really sing, and as much as their vocal runs and complex key changes are like butter, Lovato snarls and growls and head-bangs with the same effortless fervor. Why? Because they’re actually angry! Seeing old songs reimagined with a punk snarl feels like a reclamation of all the past selves Lovato’s had to be, and a celebration of who they are now.

I write a lot about Demi; their devotion to all things extraterrestrial and love for fake Egyptian antiquities , and while those antics are entertaining, I couldn’t help but feel boundless love while watching them onstage. To go from the trauma of being a child star and almost dying from an overdose to snarling lines like. “Demi leaves rehab' again/When is this sh*t gonna end?” and belting “I'm alive by the skin of my teeth/ I survived but it got harder to breathe” onstage alongside an Alice Cooper guitarist, I couldn’t help but thinking about their power. Lovato is an imperfect celebrity, and people feel moved by this; they’re moved to shrieks, moved to know every single word, and moved to shower them with chants of “DE-MI!” 30 minutes into a set.

The most powerful moment was just before “29,” the stop-in-your-tracks song off Holy Fvck, which though unconfirmed, is likely about Lovato’s relationship with Wilmer Valderrama, whom they dated when they were 17 and he was 29. Lovato thanked fans for the many, many messages they sent her about how relatable the song is. “I always want to make music people can relate to,” they said. “But it hurts that people can relate to this one. My heart is with you. F*ck the ones who hurt us,” raising their middle finger up to a crowd, who all did the same.

Demi Lovato Announces HOLY FVCK Album and Tour

The post Demi Lovato Announces HOLY FVCK Album and Tour appeared first on Consequence .

Demi Lovato has announced a new album called  HOLY FVCK,  as well as a fall tour of the same name. The record arrives August 19th via Island Records. What’s more, the singer has announced the first single from the album, “Skin of My Teeth,” will drop this Friday, June 10th.

At 16 tracks, HOLY FVCK  is a return to Lovato’s rock and pop-punk roots — something the album’s ominous artwork, shown below, depicts well. Lovato spoke about recording their eighth studio album in a statement.

“The process of making this album has been the most fulfilling yet, and I’m grateful to my fans and collaborators for being on this journey with me,” Lovato said. “Never have I been more sure of myself and my music, and this record speaks that for itself. To my Lovatics who have been rocking out with me since the beginning and those who are just now coming along for the ride, thank you. This record is for you.” Pre-orders for HOLY FVCK  are ongoing.

In conjunction with the album, Lovato has mapped out a 32-date HOLY FVCK  fall tour that will take the artist across South America and the United States. Beginning August 30th in São Paulo, Brazil, the trek runs through November, wrapping up November 6th in Irving, Texas. Dead Sara and Royal & The Serpent lend support on select dates.

“I’m so excited to get back on the road after four years without touring, and even longer since I’ve toured in South America,” Lovato said in a statement. “We’re working so hard to deliver an incredible show for all my fans and I can’t wait to see them in person to celebrate this new music.”

Tickets to the HOLY FVCK  tour go on sale Friday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . A Live Nation pre-sale occurs one day earlier on Thursday, June 9th (use code DAZZLE ).

Lovato last released Dancing with the Devil…The Art of Starting Over in 2021. Elsewhere, Lovato made headlines for selling sex toys and, after making contact with extraterrestrials , decided that the word “alien” is an offensive term.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato announced today that her current tour in support of her eighth studio album will be her last.

In several since-deleted Instagram Stories the singer posted photos looking out a hotel room window with the words, “I’m so f***ing sick I can’t get out of bed. I can’t do this anymore. This next tour will be my last. I love and thank you guys.”

While Lovato indicated in her posts that it would be “this next tour” that would be her last, music outlets like Billboard are taking it to mean her current “Holy Fvck” campaign will be her last.

The singer then posted another set of Stories that reads: “Gonna power thru it for you guys [sick emoji] [black heart emoji] I’ll need help singing so sing loud for me bb’s!!”

Along with a backstage selfie Lovato wrote, “I barely have a voice, I’m gonna be pointing the mic to the audience a lot tonight.”

The tour began exactly a month ago in Des Moines before segueing to a series of South American dates, the most recent of which was scheduled tonight in Santiago, Chile. Videos and images posted online seem to indicate she did, indeed, perform this evening.

What her statement means for the remainder of the two dozen-plus dates , all of which are in the U.S., is unclear.

Lovato is, of course, a multi-hyphenate who began her career on Barney & Friends , fronted her own sitcom — Disney’s Sonny with a Chance — in her teens and was a judge on The X Factor USA for two seasons.

She has been open in the media and in her music about struggles with an eating disorder and substance abuse. She published a memoir Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year in 2013. In the documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated she detailed her bipolar disorder. The 2021 doc series Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil detailed her 2018 overdose and the events that led up to it.

Demi Lovato took to Instagram Stories on Tuesday (Sept. 13) to share that the current tour in support of their album Holy Fvck will be their last.

“I’m so f—ing sick I can’t get out of bed,” Lovato wrote on a series of photos of a window. “I can’t do this anymore. This next tour will be my last. I love and thank you guys.”

Lovato did not give any more details on her illness but has since deleted the Instagram Stories. Billboard has reached out to her reps for more information.

The “29” singer followed up their posts with another set of Stories — which are still up on her page — that reads, “Gonna power thru it for you guys [sick emoji] [black heart emoji] I’ll need help singing so sing loud for me bb’s!!”

Alongside a mirror selfie backstage at her show in Santiago, Chile, Lovato wrote, “I barely have a voice, I’m gonna be pointing the mic to the audience a lot tonight.”

Holy Fvck  features collaborations with Royal & the Serpent,  YUNGBLUD , and Dead Sara, as well as writing and production credits from Warren “Oak” Felder, Michael Pollack, and Lovato herself. Like the sound of the album’s singles,  Holy Fvck  is a departure from the pop gloss of her  Tell Me You Love Me  days.

In an interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Demi explained, “One influence that really changed where I wanted to go directionally into music was  Kelly Clarkson’s  ‘Since You’ve Been Gone.’ It was a monster record. And I saw the transformation of her as an artist go from R&B soul pop to pop rock. And I was like, wait, that’s what I want to do.”

Demi Lovato Announces "Holy Fvck" Tour

Fresh off the heels of her 2021 album, " Dancing With the Devil . . . the Art of Starting Over ," Demi Lovato is diving into summer with a new album titled "Holy Fvck." On June 6, just over a year after their last studio release, Lovato confirmed that their eighth album, led by the single "Skin of My Teeth," will be dropping just in time to add to our summer playlists.

"The process of making this album has been the most fulfilling yet, and I'm grateful to my fans and collaborators for being on this journey with me," Lovato said in a press release. "Never have I been more sure of myself and my music, and this record speaks that for itself. To my Lovatics who have been rocking out with me since the beginning and those who are just now coming along for the ride, thank you. This record is for you."

In January, Lovato staged a "funeral " for her pop era, indicating that she would be leaving the genre behind in favor of pursuing more punk- and rock-inspired influences. Promotional photos for the upcoming release also feature the singer dripping in spikes and chains and sporting a rock-star mullet while soaking in the bathtub.

"Holy Fvck" Cover Art

holy fvck tour europe

On June 6, Lovato shared the cover art for their upcoming album, which features her tangled in a net of bondage-style straps on top of a cross-shaped pillow. Their hair is styled in an inky-black mullet that matches her thick eyeshadow, and the red latex bodysuit underneath the mess of belts perfectly complements the blood-red backdrop. Compared to Lovato's previous album covers, which commonly feature a close-up of their face against a light-colored backdrop, the new image is much edgier.

"Holy Fvck" Singles

In a tweet posted on June 4, they announced that "Skin of My Teeth," the first single off of their new "Holy Fvck" album, will drop on June 10. "I'm just trying to keep my head above water / I'm your son and I'm your daughter / I'm your mother I'm your father / I'm just a product of the problem," Lovato captioned the tweet, sharing a glimpse at the song's lyrics. Lovato will also be performing the new track on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" on June 9, one day before its official release.

"Holy Fvck" Track List

Lovato's "Holy Fvck" album will feature 16 tracks, including "Skin of My Teeth."

"Holy Fvck" Collaborations

In 2021, Lovato released "Dancing With the Devil . . . the Art of Starting Over," which featured artists like Ariana Grande, Saweetie, Noah Cyrus, and Sam Fischer. Lovato has not yet announced any collaborations for their upcoming album, but their history of working with talented artists across genres is promising.

"Holy Fvck" Release Date

Lovato has been teasing "Holy Fvck" for months, but the full album won't be available until Aug. 19.

"Holy Fvck" Tour Dates

On June 7, Lovato announced that tickets for the "Holy Fvck" tour are on sale, with the first show kicking off in Springfield, IL, on Aug. 13 and the last show taking place in Irving, TX, on Nov. 6. The 31-show tour will also include a few stops in Canada, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Brazil. Dead Sara and Royal & the Serpent will also make special guest appearances at select venues. See the venue details and grab tickets for Lovato's "Holy Fvck" tour here .

How to Preorder Demi Lovato's "Holy Fvck" Album

"Holy Fvck" is currently available for preorder on Lovato's website as a CD, vinyl, and cassette. Fans can also presave the album's first single, "Skin of My Teeth," on Apple Music and Spotify.

"Holy Fvck" Album Trailer

On June 6, Lovato shared a chilling trailer for the new album on their YouTube account. The video features flashes of the recording process, jumping from the studio to a shot of Lovato looking gloomy in the bathtub. During the trailer, she also shared a glimpse of the lyrics to the album's title track in the Notes app of their phone. "I'm the serpent in a garden / I am truth and I am darkness / I'm an angel and I'm a demon / Just depends on what you're feeling," the note reads, giving us another taste of what to expect once the full album is released.
