Sedona Visual Artists Coalition

HISTORY OF THE SEDONA ARTISTS’ COALITION

In 1996, Nancy Robb Dunst brought together a handful of artists to develop an artistic community. This loosely organized group of visionaries has grown to almost 125 artists and is now known as the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition (SVAC). In 2006, SVAC established itself as a 501c3, non-profit, educational and charitable organization.

Community events

SVAC members participated in “art in public places” events sponsored by the Sedona arts and culture commission and numerous members have displayed at city hall over the years. The traveling exhibition, “embracing time: a celebration of aging” was shown in Flagstaff, Tucson, Phoenix and Sedona.

We manage and promote the annual open studio tour, which is always the last full weekend in April. Every spring, forty to 50 SVAC artists open their studio doors to the general public, displaying and demonstrating a wide range of mediums. The tour has been designated a signature event by the Sedona chamber of commerce and is attended by people from throughout the state and country.

We hold an annual member’s exhibition at the Sedona Arts Center. The exhibition is very successful and is widely attended by the community as well as out-of-town visitors.

For more information about current and upcoming SVAC sponsored events, please send an email to: [email protected]

Sedona Arts and Culture

Sedona’s art, heritage and culture experiences span history from archaeological discoveries of petroglyphs and dwellings created by the ancient Yavapai Native Americans, to the 19th and 20th centuries. Tour Sedona with a historical eye on exhibits and art galleries highlighting Sedona’s first pioneer settlers to the golden days of Hollywood. Finally, you can’t miss current masterworks of Sedona art and photography, food and wine. You may even be inspired to create some Sedona art of your own, so bring your camera, paints or sketchbook to take part of Sedona home with you.

Sedona Arts Center The Sedona Arts Center is not only a gathering place where artists and those who love art can explore, teach and exhibit, but it has grown into an organization with national presence, providing outstanding education programming and nationally recognized events. The Sedona Arts Center offers a full palette of artistic experiences for all ages.

Sedona Historical Society and Heritage Museum The Sedona Heritage Museum is focused on the lifestyles and works of the people who pioneered the Sedona community, from 1870 to the present. The Sedona Historical Society’s mission is to research, preserve and teach the history of the greater Sedona area.

Sedona Art Galleries & Artists Studios The Sedona Visual Artists Coalition provides a venue to showcase local artists here in Sedona.

Sedona Wineries If you’re surprised that Sedona is a wine growing region, don’t be. Sedona boasts warm sunny days and cool nights, ideal conditions for growing wine grapes. Arizona’s wine grapes are grown in a wonderful rich red soil. In fact, climate and soil studies show that this region is similar to those in Spain, Southeastern Australia, Southern France and California. Check out Echo Canyon Vineyards, Javelina Leap Vineyards, and Page Springs Vineyards and Cellars in Page Springs/Cornville. Call ahead or find them here on Sedona.net under Food & Drink » Wine Country to find out about the tasting rooms' hours of operation.

Plan a half-day trip to Jerome A once near-ghost-town with a rich copper mining history, today Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. They form a peaceful, colorful, thriving community built on a rich foundation of history and lore.

Grab a photo-op Take a photography driving and hiking trip. Location suggestions include Oak Creek Canyon (be sure to check out the West Fork area), Red Rock Crossing, Crescent Moon State Park, Brins Mesa, Doe Mountain, Airport Mesa, and Broken Arrow Trail (specifically “Chicken Point” and “Submarine Rock”). Also try Long Canyon Trail and nearby Devil’s Bridge Trail.

Historical Sites You can't experience the culture of Sedona without delving into the past and exploring the ancient people that settled this mystical valley. Visit Montezuma Castle in Camp Verde, just 20 minutes from the Village of Oak Creek at the south end of Sedona. This national monument is one of the best preserved ancient cliff dwellings on the continent, a Sinaguan marvel dating back approximately 1,000 years.

To see cliff dwellings of the Hopi people, visit Palatki and its sister site, Honanki, just outside of West Sedona toward Cottonwood. These heritage sites, managed by the US Forest Service, can be toured by advance reservation under the guidance and education of a park ranger. The sites are open 7 days a week, excluding major holidays. If you're visiting Sedona on the weekend, check out V-Bar-V Ranch, another Sinaguan rock art site that is easily accessible near the Village of Oak Creek.

Visitors at Darleen Nelson's studio

The Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition (SVAC) is excited to announce the return of its annual Spring Open Studios Tour, taking place over the weekend of April 28-30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Now in its 20th year, this beloved event – which is always free to the public – will feature 48 working artists across the Verde Valley who will open their private studios. Named one of the area’s top art events by the Sedona Chamber of Commerce, the self-guided Tour offers attendees an opportunity to visit with the artists in their studios, gain firsthand insight into the creative process and purchase one-of-a-kind works of art.

This year the Village of Oak Creek is well represented with a record ten artists in six studios, participating in the Tour.

Encompassing Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, Cornville, Cottonwood, Camp Verde and Clarkdale, the Open Studios Tour has experienced astounding growth over the years. Participating artists specialize in a wide variety of mediums, including glass, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, painting, photography, weaving, mixed media and more, allowing attendees to learn about the creation of their favorite types of art or explore a new medium. Previous attendees have reported that one of their favorite parts of the Tour is the chance to experience the creative process and spend time with the artists, who offer an up-close look at how and where their work is made.

“For the visitor, the Open Studios experience invites the artwork to speak much more intimately to them as it provides an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the creative process,” said Mike Upp, a clay artist and co-chair of the Open Studios Tour. “A major appeal of such an experience is the chance to buy gorgeous, one-of-a-kind, locally produced artwork directly from the artist. The wide range of style, quality, and art forms on display during the Tour is a testament to the thriving vitality of the arts community in Sedona and the beautiful Verde Valley.”

Tour attendees will have the opportunity to enter a studio-wide drawing for a $250 gift certificate to be used at a studio of their choice. To participate in the drawing, attendees must simply complete a form at any studio on the Tour. By entering, they will automatically be signed up to receive email announcements from SVAC Art Events.

Brochures with a complete list of participating artists, including a map, will be available at numerous locations around the Verde Valley, including hotels and restaurants as well as the Sedona Arts Center and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Uptown Sedona. The Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of professional and emerging artists from Sedona and the entire Verde Valley. Its core mission is to create a supportive visual arts community that provides both exploratory and social opportunities. The organization fosters interest in the visual arts by encouraging both artists and the community through education, exhibitions and the Spring Open Studios Tour – unique events that provide in-depth learning experiences in the arts for both residents and visitors.
