coach tours tasmania

Day 1 Welcome to Hobart

Tour Melbourne Image

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart may be small in size, but it’s big in attractions, as you’ll discover this afternoon. Put your destination into perspective from the summit of Mt. Nelson, offering endless vistas over Australia’s southernmost city. View the charming Georgian cottages of Battery Point and explore the streets and convict built warehouses along Salamanca Place, the backdrop of epic Saturday markets. Gaze over boats at Constitution Dock - this is where yachts finish when competing in the annual Sydney to Hobart race, and take a stroll in the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia with its amazing collection of plants from around the world. Tonight, join your Travel Director for a Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 Hobart - Strahan

Western Tasmania is like nature amplified, a place where the wilderness rules and people are few and far between. Visiting Mount Field National Park is a humbling experience, not only for the fact it’s part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, but also because it’s home to some of the tallest eucalypts and flowering plants on Earth. Wander amid these giants to reach Russell Falls – take a deep breath; you’re officially on holiday. Records continue to be broken at Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater Lake in Australia, before you arrive in Strahan, gateway to World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Day 3 Strahan

The inky waters of the Gordon River – given its colour by amber button-grass tannins – are as eery as they are beautiful, the mirror-like surface only broken by your Gordon River chariot as you cruise through Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour before returning to Sarah Island. It’s hard to reconcile the beauty of this part of the state with its grim history as a penal colony; a place where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building. Disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these 500-year-old majestic trees. Safely back on dry land, it's soon time to discover 'The Ship That Never Was', the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! You'll see it performed live by a group of theatre professionals.

Day 4 Strahan - Cradle Mountain - Burnie

Today your journey reaches new heights – quite literally with a visit to the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you explore Dove Lake on your Cradle Mountain tour, the wild alpine moorlands here a natural magnet for lovers of the wilderness. The spectacular and pristine wilderness of Cradle Mountain is home to the mysterious and secretive Tasmanian Devil. You’ll love the next adventure today, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. A Day Keeper at Devils @ Cradle will lead you through the sanctuary and provide you with a thorough insight into its operation. When joining this tour you will be directly supporting these animals and threatened species conservation. Leave the Central Highlands after an uplifting day and head towards the scenic north-west coast for your overnight stay.

Day 5 Burnie - Launceston

Table Cape is by far Wynyard's most remarkable natural wonder, at 180 metres high, 'The Cape' - as locals refer to it - offers spectacular views of Tasmania's coastline. As you drive to the top of the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano you'll reach Table Cape lookout where, on a clear day, you can see mountain ranges over 175 kilometres away. If there’s a town with a cuter name than Penguin, we’re yet to find it. Locals embrace its appeal – there are penguin sculptures at every turn, including one measuring over 3 metres tall. Your journey along the northwest coast also passes through Ulverstone and Sheffield, The Town of Murals, boasting over 100 large paintings depicting the area’s rich history and local characters. All this exploring builds an appetite. Refuel at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, where happy cows contribute to award-winning cheeses – everything from cheddar and red Leicester to creamy Tasmanian blue.

Day 6 Launceston

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be amid an immense wilderness area. Launceston is one. Blink and you’re at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the optional scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. We wouldn’t blame you for lingering here, or perhaps sample more of Tassie’s finest fare on a Tamar Valley winery tour. The choice is yours.

Day 7 Launceston - Bicheno

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

Day 8 Bicheno - Hobart

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles and Wineglass bays. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why the peninsula stars on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time.

Day 9 Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, Blowhole… the attractions at and around Port Arthur nod to the region’s notoriously grim history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

Day 10 Farewell from Hobart

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve done it in 10 days. What a wild ride.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

This evening you can choose to visit some Tasmanian Devils at a sanctuary, or head out to spot wombats, wallabies, pademelons or maybe an elusive quoll who all call this wilderness home.

Day 4 Cradle Mountain - Smithton

The second high is ‘The Nut’, a dramatic 152-metre plateau created by the remains of an ancient volcanic plug. It guards over Stanley, a tiny village with swagger to spare. You could spend days exploring the town’s remarkably well-preserved heritage buildings. But more Tasmania holiday highlights await around the corner.

Hotel: Best Western Plus Launceston. B

6 Launceston

Hotel: Best Western Plus Launceston. B

7 Launceston - Bicheno

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water. Hotel: Beachfront at Bicheno. B D

8 Bicheno - Hobart

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles and Wineglass bays. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why the peninsula stars on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time. Hotel: Best Western Hobart. B

9 Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, Blowhole… the attractions at and around Port Arthur nod to the region’s notoriously grim history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell. Hotel: Best Western Hobart. B FD

10 Farewell from Hobart

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve done it in 10 days. What a wild ride. B

A very good decision

We wanted a private tour to take advantage of our short visit to Tasmania and it was a very good decision. Richard was the most fantastic guide, he knew so much history and was just the best company the whole day.

Connie & Greg

USA, February 2019 (private day tour)

Excellent! Our guide, Mark, gave us a spectacular day, with patience and kindness. All the stops / breaks were very thoughtful. I don’t have enough superlatives to describe Mark’s knowledge!

Jesse and Debbie Colon

Michigan USA February 2019 (private day tour)

Fabulous Day Tour

My mother and I had the most fabulous tour today of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where we saw Tasmanian Devis, Wombats, Quolls, Kangaroos and a variety of birds, including Fred the cockatoo who is 108 years old! We then had a delicious lunch  as we continued through the Derwent Valley traveling to Mount Field National Park where the trees and ferns towered over us as we hiked to Russell Falls and Horseshoe Falls. Our fabulous guide, Elise, pointed out specific fauna that we would not want to miss and made sure that every aspect of the day went beautifully, even adding a quick tour of Hobart since she knew that we would only be in Tasmania briefly. She ensured that our day was memorable and special, including recommending the perfect place for us to have dinner and ensuring we could get a reservation on a very busy night. Highest praise for Premier Travel Tasmania.

Prices & Dates

Additional information.

Please note:  This itinerary may be subject to change.

You don’t have to arrive early into Launceston, but we highly recommend you do. Time on your side? Walk the short distance to Cataract Gorge, home to the longest single-span chairlift in the world. It’s quite the ride, taking you up high into this intensely beautiful, and spiritual, place. Otherwise, meet your Travel Director and fellow Tassie companions for a drink in the evening.

Bridestowe is an assault on all your senses – in the best possible way. There’s the piercing purple of the lavender grown here, backdropped by horizon-wide blue sky. Then the musky aroma of the flowers, which has an instant calming effect. And the taste, beyond anything you ever imagined – try lavender in ice-cream, jams and teas, and thank us later. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Come dusk in Bicheno, sign up to spot tuxedoed little penguins waddle to shore from the water. Touring Tasmania doesn’t get any cuter than this.

Nothing quite prepares you for the drama of Freycinet National Park – the colours here seem more vivid, the air crisper, the water cleaner, the skies wider. A patchwork of ocean blues lap Coles Bay and Wineglass Bay, pink granite cliff faces and silvery eucalypts. There’s a reason why this place stars on postcards. Talk about a Freycinet adventure to remember. The other destination that deserves notoriety is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time.

Port Arthur’s rather grim convict past is reflected in the names of attractions around it: Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, the Blowhole… But believe us, they’re all spectacular. As is the Port Arthur Historic Site, its immaculately maintained buildings scattered over green pastures that fade into the Southern Ocean. Your private Port Arthur tour reveals the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

Short and sweet and packed with highlights – this Tasmania tour is sure to inspire future travels.

‘Defend the island’: Tasmania JackJumpers continue ‘special’ Aussie sporting fairytale

The Tasmania JackJumpers are one step away from doing the hardest thing in Australian sport and capping off an incredible fairytale.

‘It’s crazy’: Thriller keeps Cinderella story alive

The Tasmania JackJumpers continue to prove themselves the ideal model for expansion sporting teams in Australia, winning through to the NBL Grand Final series.

The JackJumpers defeated the Perth Wildcats 100-84 on Wednesday night to win the semifinal series 2-1 and book their place in the Grand Final against title favourites Melbourne United.

Tasmania have been one of the most consistent teams all season and they outclassed the Wildcats in Perth, clamping down on defence and limiting Bryce Cotton to a relatively quiet 21 points.

Milton Doyle gave the JackJumpers the lead in the second and third quarters and finished with 24 points and nine assists, while Jack McVeigh had a season-high 27 points.

The JackJumpers were always in control and held on for a comfortable 16-point victory to secure their place in a second Grand Final series in just their third season in the NBL.

Tasmania joined the NBL in the 2021-22 season and upset Melbourne United to make the Grand Final, before losing to the Sydney Kings.

The Tassie outfit made last season’s semifinals and have been a model of consistency as a franchise, thanks to shrewd recruiting and the leadership of popular coach Scott Roth.

After defeating Perth, Roth once again preached his mantra of “defending the island” of Tasmania.

“The island defended. Love those people back in Tasmania, this team loves you, we’re coming back home,” an emotional Roth said post-game.

“It’s all about defending the island and taking care of this state.”

Roth was a former assistant coach at Perth and paid tribute to Wildcats champions Jesse Wagstaff and Damian Martin for giving him a reference for the JackJumpers coaching job.

“Wagstaff, I don’t know if this is going to be his last game in a Wildcats jersey or not, but I wouldn’t be sitting here without his recommendations when I went through my job process,” Roth said.

“Him and Damian Martin were huge in what transpired in me getting this job so I would not be sitting here, I love Jesse, he’s everything that’s great about basketball and this franchise, I’m indebted to this franchise and have much respect for this franchise.”

Basketball reporter Olgun Uluc wrote on X: “The JackJumpers have played 3 seasons in the NBL. They’ve made the playoffs every season, including two Championship Series.

“Scott Roth has built such a healthy, sustainable program in Tasmania. They should be *the* model for any expansion franchise, in any sport.”

AAP’s Oliver Caffrey said: “The Jackjumpers have set the highest of bars for Tasmania’s AFL team. In a second championship series in their first three seasons in the NBL. Incredible story.”

ESPN NBL commentator Joel Peterson said: “The emotion clear. The execution brilliant. What a performance from Scott Roth and the Jackies. 2 grand finals in 3 years truly is something special.”

Former Melbourne Tigers player Felix von Hofe said: “Scott Roth could not possibly be a better fit for Tasmania. Speaks with such emotion every time he mentions the island. March on!”

Three seasons. Two Grand Finals. This @JackJumpers franchise is something to behold. And Scott Roth is a genius. — Matt McQuade (@mattmc33) March 13, 2024
Scott Roth would be elected Tasmanian premier if he stood on Saturday week. — Bren O'Brien (@streetruffian) March 13, 2024
Thinking back to last night. The game plan aside, it was so evidently clear that Scott Roth made a decision to stay completely calm and almost emotionless on the sideline. Was as if he knew in a tough environment on the road, his team would feed him and he never broke. #NBL24 — Peter Hooley (@PeterHooley12) March 13, 2024

Roth has become a cult hero in Australian basketball circles, and he put on a coaching masterclass against Perth, standing calmly on the sidelines with a new slicked-back hairdo.

Two grand final appearances in just three seasons is seriously impressive, and the JackJumpers will enter rarefied air if they can go all the way and win the NBL championship.

Only a handful of expansion teams have won their domestic sporting competitions in Australia.

In the NBL, the New Zealand Breakers have won four championships since their inception in 2003.

The South Dragons, based in Melbourne’s southeast, won the 2009 championship in the last of three seasons in the league.

The Melbourne Storm won the NRL premiership in 1999, the Western Sydney Wanders won the A-League in their second season in 2013-14 and Western United won the A-League in 2022 after joining in 2019-2020.

The NRL have added the Gold Coast Titans and Dolphins over the last decade, with an 18th team set to join the competition in the coming years.

The Titans experienced some minor success early on in the club’s history, but have battled to make finals in recent years.

The JackJumpers have set a high bar for Tasmania’s new AFL team. (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images)

In the AFL, the GWS Giants are the biggest expansion success story, making finals most seasons and finishing runners-up in 2019 Grand Final. The Giants are one of the premiership favourites this year.

The Gold Coast Suns are yet to make the top eight since joining the AFL in 2011, despite having Gary Ablett Jnr at the peak of his powers in the early 2010s.

New coach Damien Hardwick knows it’s finals or bust for the Suns, who boast an impressive list but have struggled to string consistent form together.

A Tasmanian team will join the AFL in 2028 and expectations will be high, given the success of the JackJumpers and the popularity of Aussie Rules in the Apple Isle.

Tasmania will believe they can win the NBL title, having beaten Melbourne United in two out of three match-ups this season. They will need to win on the road once again if they are to cause an upset and defend the island once more.

The five-game NBL Grand Finals series tips off on Sunday at 4pm, live on ESPN via Kayo.

NBA legend Isiah Thomas says he wants Michael Jordan to publicly apologise to him after dragging him in The Last Dance documentary.

Melbourne United have been the NBL’s benchmark, but there is one weakness which has hampered them against the Illawarra Hawks in their semi-final series, and throughout the season, writes MATT LOGUE.

The Illawarra Hawks have kept their hopes of a fairytale NBL championship alive with a thrilling win over title favourites Melbourne United.
