Hozier Extends 'Unreal Unearth' Tour into 2024 with New North American Dates

The Irish singer will continue touring in support of his latest album throughout spring and summer 2024

Hozier is going to continue taking fans to church into 2024.

Just days after the Irish star, 33, wrapped up the latest leg of his Unreal Unearth Tour , in support of his recent album of the same name, he announced he’s extending the show into next year.

The “Eat Your Young” singer shared on Thursday that he’ll play a second leg of North American dates throughout spring and summer 2024. The new live appearances begin on April 20 in Raleigh, North Carolina and continue until the final show in Los Angeles on Sept. 17. After his two nights in New York City in June, the indie folk artist will return to Ireland and the U.K. for a handful of shows, and then resume his U.S. tour in July. Throughout the 37-date run, he’ll make stops in Austin, Orlando, Denver, San Diego and many other cities.

This time around, he’ll be taking Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Russell out on the road with him.

The musician announced the upcoming live dates with a post on Instagram of his new tour poster. In the caption, he opened up about his decision to continue performing next year. “After the sweetest run of US shows, I’m delighted to announce these brand new #UnrealUnearth tour dates for next year 🖤,” the singer (whose real name is Andrew Hozier-Byrne) wrote.

After revealing that tickets go on sale on Nov. 17, he added, “I can’t wait to be back and I hope to see you there.”

The singer is currently gearing up for his next string of European dates, which resume on Nov. 26 and run through the end of the year, with several shows in his native Ireland. The tour will pick back up with the newly announced dates after a handful of festival appearances next year.

The “Work Song” artist recently released his third studio album in August, following the release of the six-song Eat Your Young EP in March.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Upon the release of the EP, he opened up to PEOPLE about his writing process . “When I think about music and the time we have, I think of all music as a historical document, really,” he shared. “Whether the song is about going out on a Saturday night, in 100 years, somebody can go, 'OK, well, that's what the ideal was for going out to a club on a Saturday night.' And I think that that's meaningful, and it has purpose and it has value in that. For me, I would just love that music to at least bear witness in some truthful way as best it can to what it's like to live in its own moment in time.”

The general on-sale for the Unreal Unearth Tour begins on Nov. 17 at 12 p.m. local time.

Hozier

This fall, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is hitting the road for a full U.S. tour — his first outing post-pandemic. Following a handful of warmup dates at smaller venues stateside and overseas, his Unreal Unearth tour (in support of his long-awaited third album, of the same name, released Aug. 18) will bring him and his new backing band to iconic venues from coast to coast for some of his biggest shows to date.

Hozier Heading for Debut U.K. No. 1 With ‘Unreal Unearth’

Expanding his show (and setlist), trending on billboard, celebrating his heritage.

“This is the first time that I’ll be singing songs in the Irish language or singing parts of songs that are in Irish Gaelic. So I’m really excited to [play] Madison Square Garden or Hollywood Bowl, and sing in Gaeilge [the Irish language]… and watch as, hopefully, concertgoers and fans learn those lines and maybe even sing it with me.”

Fawning Over His Opening Act

“I’ve always been a huge fan of Madison Cunningham — how astoundingly skillful she is on her instrument, and inventive. I think she represents one of the most talented creative forces of our generation. I’m honored she’s on these shows and that I get to hear her music every night and watch her do her thing.”

hozier unreal unearth tour opener

It was a night to remember at Madison Square Garden as Hozier took the stage for his debut performance at the iconic venue, marking a significant milestone in his career with the ‘Unreal Unearth’ tour. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as fans gathered to witness the Irish singer-songwriter’s soulful voice bring his powerful ballads and foot-stomping anthems to life. Amidst the unforgettable evening, five moments stood out as particularly indicative of Hozier’s artistry and connection with his audience.

1.Opening with “Nina Cried Power”

The show started on an electrifying note with “Nina Cried Power,” an anthem that honors protest singers past and present. Hozier’s emotive vocals paired with a rousing band performance set the tone for what was to become an evening of music that moved both hearts and minds. As images of historic civil rights movements flashed on the screen, the resonance with current global sentiments was palpable.

2.”Take Me To Church” Singalong

No Hozier concert would be complete without his breakout hit “Take Me To Church,” and Madison Square Garden’s rendition will go down in history. The crowd’s voices swelled into a collective chorus, echoing around the rafters of the Garden while Hozier sang with a raw passion that only added to the song’s haunting intensity.

3.Surprise Guest Performance

The night took an exciting turn when a special guest musician joined Hozier on stage for a duet, uniting their voices in perfect harmony and showcasing an exceptional blend of styles. This surprise collaboration became a unique highlight that those present would talk about long after the last note had faded.

4.A Stunning Acoustic Set

In an intimate interlude amidst the powerhouse performance, Hozier delivered a stunning acoustic set which included fan favorites as well as lesser-known tracks off his latest album. This quieter moment allowed his lyrical prowess and guitar skills to shine through, establishing an almost tangible connection with every person in the room.

5.Uplifting Encore With “Work Song”

As if the night couldn’t get any better, Hozier returned for an encore that had everyone on their feet – “Work Song.” Its soul-stirring melody and chorus became an uplifting end to an already memorable performance. Hozier’s voice boomed across Madison Square Garden, accompanied by rhythmic clapping and backing vocals that wrapped up the ‘Unreal Unearth’ tour stop in a beautifully resonant bow.

From electrifying beginnings to heartwarming ends, Hozier’s Madison Square Garden debut can be summed up in one word: legendary.

We at FRONT of HOUSE checked in recently on Hozier’s Unreal Unearth tour, which included nine exceptional musicians on stage with the gifted Irish singer-songwriter and musician. Hozier (Andrew John Hozier-Byrne) is a mixture of folk, blues and soul — his multi-platinum single “Take Me To Church” reached #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list in 2013. His debut album is 6x platinum in Ireland and multi-platinum in several other countries. He brought a lively show to the stage where we caught up with the tour and spoke to the artist’s FOH engineer Stephen “Pato” Pattison, monitor engineer Hunter Scoggins and systems engineer/crew chief Nick Sage. The sound company is Nashville-based Spectrum Sound.

 From the FOH Position

Pattison first met Hozier in 2017 through management and production contacts. He was working for another Irish act called The Script, and Hozier’s management came to see the tour at London’s O2 arena. Hozier’s production manager knew Pattison from a previous tour they’d done together with The Cranberries. Management liked what they heard and approached him for Hozier. “I met up with Andrew (Hozier) and the band in rehearsals in Dublin prior to their Wasteland Baby tour,” Pattison recalls. “We got on great and they also liked that I was a musician and could offer up feedback and ideas for arrangements in the live setting.”

The 2023 tour been an interesting one with Hozier, notes Pattison, as he’s used a number of console brands at FOH. “When we started back in March, we were doing lots of promo, festivals and fan-only events, which meant we could be playing in a TV studio, to 400 people in a club or to 40,000 people at a festival… So I knew every day would be different and I’d have to fit into whatever space was available without sacrificing quality, as Andrew (Hozier) doesn’t really do stripped down versions of songs especially when they’re new or not out yet! Andrew doesn’t use any ‘tracks’ — pre-recorded material live, which means we have a lot of musicians on stage; currently it’s nine people on stage using 60+ inputs. Everyone plays more than one instrument, and everyone sings. So we needed to fit everything in, whether we went from a club to a stadium.”

hozier unreal unearth tour opener

For the shows in the first half of the year, Pattison chose the Allen & Heath dLive console, which he says are super-scalable. “I actually took a C1500 compact console for the club shows where space was very tight, and an S7000 when space allowed.” Pattison did use a C1500 for the band’s Glastonbury Festival show, where he had plenty of space, but it was just easier to get the smaller console to and from FOH. “I didn’t lose anything other than physical fader count — both handle the same number of inputs (128), have the same number of mix buses (64), same FX, etc. And the exact same show file loads on both without having to put it through a converter or lose anything from my show file, so that was a no-brainer. dLive has almost every type of plug-in you could ask for, great FX and nice sounding preamps. For the rest of the year — after the album was launched in August — we’d mostly be playing arenas, so with more space at FOH, I decided to use a Yamaha Rivage PM7.”

Pattison says the Rivage offers plenty of flexibility and a higher channel and mix bus count along with a more comprehensive way of integrating processing and plug-ins. “Essentially my show file is set up in a very similar fashion: There’s a 64-input stage rack with fantastic-sounding preamps and Neve Silk Texture and a MADI card for digital splits to broadcast. At FOH, I have a Dante card fitted to the surface — once again for recording and virtual sound check.”

 Outboard Goes Inboard

Pattison is not carrying any outboard or external equipment for several reasons. “It’s nice to have a fancy valve (tube) preamp or compressor, but honestly, when I was using analog gear back in the day, no one ever turned around from the audience and asked ‘was that a dbx 160s on the second backing vocal?’ All those toys are really just for us ‘engineers,’ as we know how to get the result we want from that piece of gear or in some cases there’s even a placebo effect where because you’re looking at some old rack gear it ‘just sounds warmer.’”

Pattison says all the modern consoles have great features and FX onboard but adds that users do have to spend the time to tweak them, as presets are only a starting point. “I like using specific tools for specific jobs and unless it’s an obvious ‘effect’ — I prefer it when you notice the plug-in when you turn it off and suddenly it’s not quite as ‘nice’ as it was before. I like to use many small gains to make a difference — not one obvious change — but many subtleties combining to give me the result I’m after.”

For Pattison, clean and intelligible vocals are the goal. “I can then choose to either distort or add color to them. You can’t add what isn’t there in the first place, but you can take away what you don’t like about the raw signal. I like having processing in the most useful order, and on the Yamaha, I can move the inserts in the chain to get what I want. Once the signal’s at the console, I like to go in the order of Hi Pass filter, fast attack and release compressor like a modeled 1176, dynamic EQ like a BSS901 model, then static channel EQ, then another dynamic EQ, and then a slow compressor like an LA2A model.”

hozier unreal unearth tour opener

 Capturing that Sound

Hozier’s albums are often sonically dense, and reverb is a major player in the early recordings, notes Pattison. “The new material often features orchestral arrangements, so to keep the live version as rich, I’ll use some modulation FX on instruments and vocals. I always use stereo sends into FX so I can place instruments within the effected “cloud” that I add to the live mix. We have a cellist and violinist on tour, and they have their own pedal boards with FX for overdriven cello sounds, etc., but I also take a clean, dry version that I’ll use for my own reverb sends to build a string section out of a duo. I often use multiple reverbs on the same instrument such as room verbs along with halls and plates too. I’ll sum the instruments to groups and I mostly mix from there.”

Pattison says they’re using Universal Audio OX reactive load boxes with Dynamic Speaker Modeling on Andrew’s guitar amps to control the stage volume as he uses mostly semi-acoustic guitars. “He has a Gibson 330 that would howl near a loud tube amp, especially when he uses fuzz pedals. So I let the P.A. act as his amp and I’ll ride his level when he needs feedback and sustain or not. Me being a guitar player is definitely useful at different points — so do I need to change my EQ or turn the sub down or can we use cardioid subs, or maybe even change the arrangement. If you offer ideas that have a solid foundation and reasoning, and the band is happy on stage, mixing FOH so much easier.”

So far, this tour has been a great experience. “This is such a fantastic camp all around from top to bottom. Andrew is the nicest person, appreciates everything we do and takes any ideas the crew may have if it improves the show in any way. I’m always amazed how he remembers everyone’s name, there’s 50 plus people on the road with this show and he thanks everyone by name every night!”

 The Systems Approach

This is Nick Sage’s second Hozier tour as systems engineer and crew chief. Sage started as the general tech with Spectrum Sound, the tour’s audio company since 2018. “The band and crew have always been staffed by incredibly talented, kind people who seem to rally around the music and are at the top of their game, which makes each day that much easier. Pato has been here since I began and fits that exact mold as someone who is absolutely ‘pro’ at their gig, while always looking to make the day a little more light-hearted. This is also the type of gig where the artist genuinely cares about his band and crew and that trickles down and makes people want to stay, which is a huge part of why a good majority of this crew has been together for a while.”

Sage has been with Spectrum for eight years and, similar to company clients, Hozier is one that they have supported almost from the beginning. “Spectrum had a relationship with the Hozier team since ‘Take Me to Church’ first began to chart and it was quickly decided that the original planned 6-week tour for the self-titled album would have to be extended. Bobby George, our Spectrum Sound account rep and PM Duchess Iredale had a small connection that led to a couple consoles being rented. Fast forward to now in what has blossomed into a 10-year-long partnership for his gigs in the U.S. & Canada.”

Up until 2019, Spectrum supplied consoles and then a control package with P.A. of the day. For the Unreal Unearth tour, Sage says they were able to have the consistency of a d&b KSL rig, while truly throwing it through the wringer of different venue types.

“Between Pato, myself and Bobby George, we were able to build a P.A. rig that would fill a large arena but be adaptable for whatever venue size we’d find ourselves in. The KSL system allows us to adapt to each room while being confident that we have the same coverage and sound every night.  The 12 KSL Subs across the front gives us nice, smooth low-end coverage while also giving that ‘punch’ that you wouldn’t expect from such a small postage stamp footprint of the KSL. With the system being rear-rejecting along with the band being completely on in-ears, it makes for a quiet stage and as much as a clean template as possible for Hunter (Scoggins) on monitors.”

Sage added that his “drive rack setup is pretty straightforward with our DirectOut Prodigy processor. The Prodigy allows for several inputs, which we use for our opener and then drive the amps via Dante with analog backups. I then time and tune in the d&b D80 amplifiers through R1 remote control software.”

Close friends for many years, Pattison helped show Sage the ropes of touring early on in his career. “Because of this, I owe lots of my personal setup and workflow to him,” Sage says. “He’s always had a simple setup that he will tinker with, as most good FOH engineers seem to do. On this run, he is entirely in the box with a PM7, which not only makes my job much easier but also showcases the benefits of having a Yamaha console out with us.”

 Meanwhile, in Monitor World

Hunter Scoggins mixes monitors for the band on an AVID S6L-24D connected to the E6L-192 engine, with 64 inputs from stage and tech worlds. Scoggins is currently running 30 outputs to run the show. “I have 14 stereo outs for my IEMs for the band and the techs. We have nine band member and four tech mixes every day with a dedicated IEM mix for guests.”

Scoggins notes that the guitar players no longer have amps on stage; those are placed stage right in the guitar/string tech world. “We have the cabinets of their choice set up and use Universal Audio’s OX amp attenuator and speaker modeling unit. This lets us get the sound of the chosen amp without the added stage volume. It also allows us to have working amps near stage for emergency purposes.”

With all nine performers on stage who sing and play multiple instruments, with several members moving to different positions to play different instruments, keeps things lively for Scoggins. “We also have a Nord keyboard setup far downstage right that is used by our cellist and one of our backing vocalists with a mic in that position. Because of these position and instrument changes, coupled with the many different instrumentations and arrangements during the show it’s imperative that I use my Snapshots diligently.”

Scoggins doesn’t use very many effects or plug-ins for the show. “Hozier and the band have spent countless hours developing the sounds they want in their music, and leading up to the tour, we spent lots of time working together to get the sounds and mixes they wanted on the road. “Hozier thrives in the live environment and the idea from the start was to have the show reflect that. I will add reverb to vocals and acoustic instruments to give a little more space to the mix and give it a more live feel. Occasionally I use a delay on some inputs, but by and large, I’ve managed to stay away from using many plug-ins — just some the AVID has available onboard.”

Hozier’s vocal mic is the Shure KSM11, which Scoggins says gives the vocal an “in your face” presence that really helps him in monitor world.  “Andrew loves a dynamic mix that reflects the live performance environment. The KSM11 lets me keep his vocal present in the mix, while minimizing extemporaneous stage noise and maintaining control of the mix.  There is a top-end bite sort of sound that he likes to hear in his vocal and this mic allows me to provide this with minimal effort from the console. He also uses a Shure 520 DX Green Bullet mic, which is designed for capturing harmonica. It has a lo-fi sound quality that he uses for specific lines in a few songs. I throw a little reverb on that to give it that old-school, lo-fi sound for those moments.”

Ultimate Ears IEMs are being used for the tour. Hozier, Scoggins and Alex the musical director and bass player are on the UE LIVE IEMs. The rest of the band are on UE 7 PRO and UE 11 PRO, depending on their personal preference.

“I couldn’t do my job without the techs we have on stage,” says Scoggins. “Murt Murphy is Hozier’s guitar tech and architect of his guitar rig. Our bass and drum tech Fred Burke’s work setting and tuning the drums makes my days so much easier. Bailey Griffith is our keys and strings tech and he covers our other guitars players on stage.”

Good Vibrations

Scroggins added one feeling shared by the entire crew. “Working with and mixing Hozier has been an incredibly rewarding experience. He knows what he wants to hear and is adept in communicating that to me. Hozier and his band are incredibly talented singers and musicians and they make mixing the show easier than I could’ve imagined.”

The tour is currently doing European and U.K. shows, wrapping up in 3Arena (Dublin, Ireland) on Dec. 22, 2023. A South American leg kicks off in March 2023, soon after followed by a return to U.S. dates in April.

Concert Review: Hozier - Unreal Unearth Tour

hozier unreal unearth tour opener

Hozier burst onto the mainstream music scene when his debut single, “Take Me To Church,” was released in 2013 and quickly dominated the music charts. I fell in love with his music the first time I heard his voice, and my obsession with him hasn’t diminished at all in the past ten years. His talent is absolutely undeniable; from his vocal range, instrumental skill, and incredible lyricism, his studio albums and live shows are mesmerizing.

I attended the November 1st date of Hozier’s Unreal, Unearth World Tour, named after his 2023 album of the same name. The concert was in Phoenix, Arizona at the Arizona Financial Theatre, where I had seen Hozier on his last tour in 2019. That show was one of my final shows before the Covid-19 Pandemic began. Like everyone, so much of my life has changed since then, but I have never lost my love for Hozier and his music. In times of so much uncertainty, one of the small joys I had at that time was getting in my car and blasting my favorite Hozier songs out of my stereo.

I was so excited to walk into one of my favorite venues to see him for another sold-out show. Madison Cunningham was his opener for this tour and I was blown away by her talent. I had never listened to her before, but the confidence and power in her vocals overtook the entire venue. Her voice has a delicate softness to it that takes listeners back to the early days of music. It is easy to imagine her songs being played on a vintage record play but that is not to say they are boring. She effortlessly took each song to new heights with her impressive range and crystal clear high notes. If you didn’t know she was opening for Hozier, you would have believed it was a show entirely of her own. By the time her set was over, the entire audience was simultaneously wanting more of her music and restless to get to the main event.

When Hozier came out, I, like everyone in the venue, absolutely lost my mind. He started his set with De Selby (Part 1) and De Selby (Part 2) before launching into my favorite song ever, Jackie and Wilson. I refused to look at any spoilers online for the tour prior to my show, so this was an exciting surprise. I danced and sang my little heart out like there was no one else in the room.

The stage visuals tapped into the fantastical theme of the night, with a large, bare tree skyline descending above the stage. Behind the band, projections of stormy skies, sunrises, and starry fields complemented the colorful lights illuminating the stage and kept our eyes glued to the stage.

The audience was alive with the rush of guitar and Hozier’s dazzling stage presence. He played a mix of songs from all three of his studio albums without missing a single beat. With the help of his amazing band and backup vocalists, he had the crowd dancing one minute and shedding tears the next. When the fan-favorite (yet misunderstood) Cherry Wine came on, we were all put into a melancholic trance as Hozier lamented about love gone bad.

He allowed the music to do most of the talking for him, saving his voice in between songs until he reached I, Carrion, a song about the myth of Icarus. Before starting the song, he connected the mythical origins of this song to the mythical origins of the city of Phoenix, stating how much he loves it for its name. “If you’re familiar with the story of Icarus… Well, I imagine you all are. It’s Phoenix, right? I guess he [Icarus] didn’t come back though, right, when he burned up?” He said. The talk of mythic stories continued as he asked for the spotlights to be pointed at the upper level seating. As those of us on the floor turned to look, he compared the fans up in those stands to “the Gods of Mount Olympus.”

As the night began to wind down, he played one of my other favorite songs, Damage Gets Done, in a breathtaking duet with backing vocalists, Melissa McMillan. The song is originally a duet with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, but McMillan’s voice did not disappoint. Every note reminded me that I’m young and alive with a full journey ahead of me to live. Since its release, this song has inspired me to enjoy my youth as long and as fully as possible, and hearing it live made me feel like I could do anything.

To end his initial set, Hozier played his hit single, Take Me To Church. The love and appreciation he has for that song is evident each time he plays it live, and I am happy that it has stood the test of time over the past 10 years.

hozier unreal unearth tour opener

After a brief break, Hozier and his band came back for an encore, starting with Nina Cried Power, a song calling for action and praising generations of activists from around the world. Before beginning the song, Hozier spoke about the heartbreaking war against Palestine and encouraged the audience to contact their local representatives and government officials to call for a ceasefire. Bravely, an audience member before me raised her Palestinian flag as the song began. Constantly practicing what he preaches, Hozier’s shows always feel safe and welcoming to all.

For his final song, Hozier played the ever-romantic Work Song in a duet with Madison Cunningham . Another one of my favorites, I got lost in the dreamy tune and lyrics of the song before he took a bow with his band members and walked off stage.

Seeing Hozier live is an experience like no other. With incredible vocals, stage presence, and musical ability, he puts on a two-hour show that is impossible to dislike. I am so grateful to have seen him again. His albums have truly made me who I am and have carried me through so much. I can't wait to see him again in the future and make many more memories at his shows.

Hozier Explores New Frontiers in ‘Unreal Unearth’

The irish singer-songwriter discusses his third album, dante’s inferno, working with brandi carlile, and much more.

Hozier

Julia Johnson

Sitting in his Wicklow studio as the world stood still at the beginning of the pandemic, Hozier began picking at the strings on his guitar with his mind set on making demos for his third studio album.

One of the first tunes stuck, capturing a small part of what would become “De Selby”. He kept in the rawness of his surroundings from that moment in the recording, including the creaking of his chair. From those initial experiments, the starting point for what would become  Unreal Unearth   was born.

Made into two parts, the opening tracks of the album hint at what’s to come: an adventure through one genre to another, all anchored by Hozier’s powerful, haunting words.

Speaking over Zoom from a Los Angeles sound studio many, many months after those tentative album beginnings in Ireland, Hozier sounds relaxed and passionate as he emphasises the consideration that’s gone into Unreal Unearth .

Evidently a deep thinker, it’s not long before he’s linking  the parallels of the uncertain and restricted pandemic times to Dante Alighieri’s Inferno ,  the first part of his masterpiece poem The Divine Comedy , in which the author outlines a journey through the nine circles of hell.

“There were things in that poem that resonated with me. It was March 2020, I was sitting down to read it, I had time,” he tells Rolling Stone AU/NZ .  “There were poems like that, and some other classics that, just as a lyricist I was interested in, all these classic poems that changed literature forever.

“This piece of literature is about a man who finds himself in new uncertain and dark circumstances and walks his way through this path, through these things, and I felt that to be a fun and interesting device for nodding to the reality of passing through something.  It felt wrong not to acknowledge in some way the reality that certainly I had in the time period that these songs were born in.”

While he didn’t want the songs to fixate solely on the lockdown experience, Hozier wanted to acknowledge in some way the uncharted territory that we all faced at the time.

“It was a really intense creative period and a new way, in some respects, of making music in some of the more collaborative songs,” he says in his  unmistakable Irish accent.  “I feel like I developed a whole new range of tools and skills in creating and executing a song in this.”

Although Hozier had a general preference to piece songs together in complete quiet, doing so while the world was so disconnected began to feel isolating past a point of what felt natural.

“On this album, I think I reached the limitations during lockdown of what solitude could offer me. That sense of peace and quiet kind of reached the upper limits,” he explains.

Coming out of lockdown, for the first time, he took a chance to jam with other producers, linking up  with Dan Tannenbaum and his team.

“I’ve never really created like that before for my own music, so that was a new experience and it was very freeing to know, ‘Okay, there’s this, I also can stand in a space where people are just making noise, and shouting melodies down a microphone and make sense of it later.’  But I was experiencing spontaneous collective creation of music for the first time and that was really, really fun. It was less considered.”

Although not entirely sure where every sound would go, Hozier knew from the outset he wanted to play with acoustic and organic sounds, and bring them to life with vintage analogue synthesisers and orchestral compositions.

“You find this is often the case when you’re playing with an instrument that you have very little understanding of, but it has a character and a sound and noise all to its own self that you are totally unfamiliar with. It will pull out of you ideas.

If you were on something that you are very familiar with, you go back to places that you know; but you find instruments that are strange to you, you will pull out new and wonderful, strange things to you. That is also something that I would love to dive into more.”

The abrupt and harsh nature of the early days of the pandemic challenged his songwriting methods – but also presented new opportunities to try something new and adapt.

“There were some moments that were really rewarding in that collaboration. In “Son of Nyx”, for example, the piano piece that you hear is a phone memo that my friend Alex Ryan sent me, my bass player.  I’ve known him since college and he sent me this piece of music. I thought it was beautiful, and asked if I could include it on the album.”

As far as Hozier is concerned, he’s the luckiest man he knows. From the time he was a teenager, he knew there was nothing in his life that he cared about more than music – nothing brought him closer to himself.

“I was most myself, most at peace, most fulfilled in the creation and singing of music,” he insists. “I’m so grateful to get to do what I do. I think I’d be somewhat in disbelief at how blessed I am and how it worked out for me.

“You spend years actually denying yourself the reality that you dare to dream something.  There’s some things that you don’t want to admit to yourself that, ‘Oh, no, I really want that. You know, I would love to, I would love to do that.’ I feel incredibly fortunate.”

Hozier was just 22-years-old when he  delivered the groundbreaking anthem “Take Me to Church”, a song which opened the gate to a triumphant career. 10 years later, h is ability to provoke emotion through his moody and careful delivery hasn’t wavered; on his songs, Hozier’s voice reigns supreme.

His new album features a collaboration with the legendary Brandi Carlile, who gave added life to “Damage Gets Done”, a power ballad emotionally contending with the reality of growing up.  Hozier met Carlile years ago at Newport Folk Festival, and he’s always found a great kinship with their work.

“Brandi is amazing. She’s an incredible artist who I’m very lucky to get to know over the last few years. When I was writing that song, it needed to be two voices, I kept hearing two voices – one was this powerful voice that there’s very few that I feel could rise to what that sound needed.  She has one of those voices – soaring, powerful, courageous.

“I asked her if she had any time in her schedule – in her considerably busy schedule – and she managed to do it. And I’m so honoured she did.”

Now that Unreal Unearth is out, Hozier is excited to share the music and “let it be”.

“I’m proud of the album. I’ve been sitting on these songs for a while,”  he says enthusiastically. “I’m excited to release it and let it go into the world and let people find it and discover it if they care to.”

Hozier’s Unreal Unearth is out now.

Concert review: Hozier’s Unreal Unearth tour

His music captivates the crowd with powerful rhythms and melodies.

The weather on Sunday, Oct. 22 proved to be perfect, especially if you were amongst the spirited crowd gathered at Rogers Arena. Dressed in fall, grunge-folk outfits, thousands of fans found their way to their seats, eager to experience Hozier in Vancouver as part of his “Unreal Unearth” tour.

Born Andrew Hozier-Byrne, the Irish singer-songwriter has captivated listeners for a decade with his music, drawing inspiration from folk, soul, and blues. His third and most recent album, Unreal Unearth , was released on Aug. 18 and crafted during the pandemic’s isolation. The album takes listeners through Dante’s Nine Circles of Hell, offering themes of heartbreak, solitude, and the potential for rebirth.

Madison Cunningham, a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, opened the show, setting the stage for what was to come. Her music resonated with a haunting quality reminiscent of many of Hozier’s songs. Though lesser known than Hozier, Cunningham quickly won over the crowd with her unique style and sound.

What followed was nearly two hours of sheer musical perfection.

Hozier entered the stage, shrouded in darkness but illuminated by a compelling fragmented light. He performed against a backdrop adorned with countless pinpricks of light, mesmerizing the audience with the opening notes of “De Selby (Part 1) . ” Hozier’s ethereal voice beckoned the crowd into his world, casting a captivating spell over everyone present.

“De Selby (Part 2)” seamlessly followed, paving the way for crowd-pleasers like “Jackie and Wilson” and “From Eden, ” a personal favourite which has nothing to do with Katie McGrath being in the music video, from his 2014 self-titled album. These initial songs set the tone for the evening, balancing tunes with robust rhythms and more serene melodies with lilting, ethereal qualities.

The stage’s backdrop was adorned with impressive graphics, live shots, and lighting displays. During “Cherry Wine,” a massive sun-like orb was projected behind Hozier, pulsating and dimming throughout the song, creating a unique visual spectacle. This motif reappeared at other points in the concert, consistently enhancing the music’s impact.

“Take Me to Church,” Hozier’s most popular song with over two billion streams on Spotify, was a pivotal moment in the concert. The production team ingeniously combined footage from the song’s music video with live shots of the performance, offering a fresh perspective on visuals loved by many fans. Flames lapped at the bottom of the band’s risers, adding an extra layer of excitement to the performance.

Prior to launching into the rousing 2018 anthem “Nina Cried Power,” which pays homage to protest anthems, Hozier paused to honour his duet partner, the legendary Mavis Staples. He underscored the direct connection between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and the Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland, shedding light on the historical and cultural contexts that have shaped his music.

Cunningham returned to the stage at the end of the evening to join Hozier in delivering one of the most heart-rending love songs of the past 15 years, “Work Song.” A remarkable moment of their duet occurred when they gracefully retreated, allowing the entire arena to unite in a powerful chorus, singing the enduring lyrics. It was a hauntingly beautiful and emotionally charged conclusion to the night.

While Hozier’s songs have a way of evoking physical reactions, the live experience elevates them to new heights. Every minute of his performance exceeded expectations, resulting in an unforgettable night of music.

In an interview with TheMusic.com.au 's Carley Hall , Hozier said of the wide scope of themes explored on Unreal Unearth: “Sometimes they can be personal reflections, or maybe at times, deeply personal reflections or experiences of past experiences. But once it's once it's done, and once it's out in the world, it also belongs to everyone else. And the way I view it is if something resonates with you, it most likely is going to resonate with somebody else.”

Hozier finds harmony and melody in the midst of chaos. The GRAMMY® Award-nominated Diamond-certified Irish singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist tunes into raw blues spirit, unrestrained soul, rock energy, and folk eloquence. At 22, he delivered a generational anthem in the form of “Take Me To Church.” It reached 13x-Platinum status and earned a rare Diamond certification from the RIAA, climbed to the #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, became one of the Top 30 “Most-Streamed Songs on Spotify , ” and notched a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Song of the Year . ” It paved the way for his 2014 full-length debut, Hozier , which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and went double-Platinum. The 2019 Gold-certified follow-up, Wasteland, Baby! , bowed at #1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the Platinum single “Almost (Sweet Music)” as well as “Would That I,” which has been the featured sound of recent viral trends on TikTok.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Tours to Moscow

Our Moscow tours are land only meaning that you arrange your own air travel to Russia and our expert staff meets you at the airport and handles everything else from there. Our online Airline Ticket booking system offers some of the most competitive rates to Russia available on the web so if you need tickets, please visit our Russian air ticket center . Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
