AKIBA’S TRIP Hellbound & Debriefed: Mini-Walkthrough (Gameplay Tips & FAQs)

I will be covering gameplay basics, random tips, unlockables and secrets in this game. Since I created a guide for 2 (Undead & Undressed), I thought about creating a guide for this 1 remaster as well.

Also, this game is a remaster of 1. So if you think the mechanics were dated in Undead and Undressed, you are going to feel that this game is much more sluggish and difficult to control. Also, this is a direct 1:1 remaster, so there is no new content. And all brands that was featured in the original PSP game has had their names changed (possibly due to expiring licenses).

Default PC Menu Controls

  • WASD for Up, Left, Down, Right
  • . for Confirm (as in full stop)

Difficulty Settings

  • Easy – You do more damage and you can deal all low, middle and high damage with any hit. Clothes will take more hits before shredding.
  • Casual – You do more damage. But this time, Low hits low, middle hits middle and so on. Clothes will take more hits before shredding.
  • Gamer – You do normal damage. NPCs attack more frequently. Drop rates for upgraded weapons are increased
  • Otaku – You do less damage and NPCs seems to attack much more frequently. Clothes also shred much faster after the clothes flash red visually (about 2-3 hits). in this mode. Drop rates for upgraded weapons are significantly increased. Unlocks only when you clear Casual or above.
  • ??? – Super hard mode. I haven’t played it but I heard it’s difficult. Unlocks only when you clear Otaku.

Battle System

Do take note that the low hits will only deal to their bottoms. Same applies to middle hits and high hits respectively unless you are playing on Easy, which any hit will deal damage to all 3 parts.

Attempting a Strip on low HP clothes, will trigger a button mash.

Attempting a Strip on 0 HP clothes will directly strip them or tear them if you do not have the respective Skill book required to steal their clothes.

Counter-Attacking is possible. But you can only counter-attack if you countered the right stance. For example, if the enemy hits low, you can only counter-hit a low. If the enemy hits middle, you can only counter-hit middle. If the enemy’s clothes HP is low, counter-strip automatically occurs if the counter-attack is successful.

Stripping and Stealing Clothes

I refer stripping as holding the attack button respectively to strip. If you lack the skill book to steal their clothes, this will tear the clothes instead of stealing them. If you constantly hit a clothes with no HP left, it will eventually shred (which is similar to tear).

LAMMTORRA at NE Main Street for example, sells ‘Gotcha! – 24-Hour Cop-‘ Skill for 100,000 Yen which allows you to steal the clothes of officers. The Skill ‘High School Charm’, for example, is learnt through the Master.

There are also a lot of costumes that only appear once in the whole playthrough (such as the Shrine Maiden costume). These characters only appear during Sub Missions. So if you want to collect them all, take care not to shred the costumes by accident or you would have to re-load your save. If you did overwrite your save, you can always get them again in New Game Plus mode.

Movesets/Skills

  • Bare-Handed Additional Movesets (Moving and Heavy Attacks): Can be found at LAMMTORRA on SE Main Street
  • One-Handed Additional Movesets (Moving and Heavy Attacks): Can be found at Software Shop on NW Main Street
  • Two-Handed Additional Movesets (Moving and Heavy Attacks): Can be found at Software Shop on SW Main Street
  • Third Hit Combo Moveset (Attack Lvl 3): Can be found at TOWANIMUSEN on Akiba Station Front
  • AOE Attack Moveset: All Fist, One-Handed, Two-Handed can be purchased at third-rabbit on Junk Street

Additional Movesets/Skills:

  • High-Speed Tackle – Auto learn at Level 12
  • Kamehame Ho – Auto learn at Level 14
  • My Figure – Auto learn at Level 18
  • Close Quarters – Auto learn at Level 23
  • Bat – Auto learn at Level 28
  • Vampire – Auto learn at Level 35
  • Low Angle Camera (While taking pictures with the camera, you are able to crouch) – Learn after clearing Master Angler’s Bait Sub Mission.
  • Foreign Language Dictionary (To Understand English) – Purchase from YADAMA DENKI on Akiba Station Front. This will also help you understand Stall Vendors
  • Cross Dress Ability – Clear the Sub Mission ‘Another World’ (You will need to clear it again if you choose to use a female protagonist for your second run)

Signature Weapons (Weapons with special animations or abilities):

  • Sister’s Fighting Spirit -> Beat your little sister in her room.
  • Master’s Fighting Spirit -> Beat the Master in the Sub Mission ‘Cherry Strikes Back’ (appears during the Shadow Soul route only) and remember to pick it up from the ground.
  • Mido’s Fighting Spirit -> Beat Mido in Shadow Soul route
  • Darkside of a Maiden -> Beat SGV
  • DBP Boombox -> Beat Kitada Sena in ‘Stop DBP’s Plans’
  • DBP Microphone -> Beat Kitada Mana ‘Stop DBP’s Plans’
  • Night Stinger -> Beat Yu Abeno in Coexistence Route and finish him off if prompted. Remember to pick it up before leaving the area.
  • Eclipse -> Beat Rei Anekoji in Coexistence Route and remember to pick it up during Sejima’s fight directly after.
  • Sejima’s Rod -> Beat Sejima Ryuji in Coexistence or Shadow Soul endings

No special animation but high base damage:

  • Forbidden Book of Akiba -> When friendship with NIRO, Shadow Soul, Akiba Citizens is maxed before the mission ‘Mother Soul Arrives’, then collect from Yatabe during the Coexistence Route. If you did most of the Sub Missions, this will not be an issue.
  • Excawibur -> Beat the Battle Arena X Rank Fight

Hidden Relationship Status/Palm-reading

You will know it is Positive when: ‘These lines show great affection. The people of Akiba must love you.’, ‘Oh, this is a trust line! Someone named “NIRO” trusts you implicitly’, ‘A friendship line! With… Who are the Shadow Souls?’

If you strip too many innocent bystanders/civilians, you will notice that some civilians run away from you when they see you.

If you strip too many Shadow Souls, some Shadow Souls will instantly aggro when you get close.

People that rubs their hands and come and talk to you

  • Palm-readers: Neutral. They will help analyse what your relationship status with the various groups in the game.
  • Youngsters: Bad. They appear at Back Street and If they manage to talk to you, you are given 3 options. If you choose to not give them money, you instantly get into a fight. However, if your relationship status with Akihabara Citizens are high, they would still come talk to you but they no longer will attack you.
  • Maids: Neutral. They will invite you to the Maid Cafe. That is about it.
  • Charity Workers: Neutral. They will ask you to donate money. If you donate 1 million yen to the Charity Workers in a single playthrough, Suzuna will recover and will spawn at the park in that playthrough for you to fight and obtain her clothes.
  • Artlien: Please don’t talk to her lol. Unless you want to purposely go into debt, which in this case, is the easiest way. More on debt at a later section.

Shredding clothes will not award any EXP and there is no defeat bonus for defeating civilians.

There is a chance of a Lost Maid/Lost Otaku spawning whenever you load into a map. They will run the moment they see you. They drop incredibly high EXP (similar to how Metal Slimes in Dragon Quest work) when you strip them. The defeat experience bonus (strip all headgear, top and bottom) is even higher and can easily go above thousands.

Upgrading and Items

Temporary buff items exists too, such as Tauramine X or Can of Ramen, but they only last until you leave the area.

Always carry some UV Cut Sunscreen as they provide 30 seconds of ‘immortality’. It will not prevent your clothes from being shredded or stripped but it allows you to survive without clothes for 30 seconds. You must use it before all your clothes is gone. If the opponent attempts to strip your 0 HP clothing, quickly pause the game and use the UV Cut Sunscreen. When you finish the battle, a portion of your clothes will return back to you. If you don’t think you can finish your opponent off, running out of the map is an option.

FIghting Sara

This will get you the license to fight Sara and obtain the ability to steal her clothes.

Defeating her will get you the Nickname ‘Charismatic Maid’. She will only use her signature weapon on Gamer difficulty and onwards.

Fighting Suzuna

The sister’s room dialogue options and what they do.

  • Random Questions you can ask her
  • (Praise me) You can give her money and she can directly increase your EXP by cheering you up.
  • (Shame me) You can give her money and she can improve the durability of the costume that you gave her to wear up to +99
  • (Change) You can give her money to wear any costume of your choosing
  • (Look something up for me) Give hints to where items in the category of your choosing can be found

I’ll give you an allowance: Increase affection with sister temporarily and possibly give you a discount when changing her clothes

Getting into debt

But because ‘Forgive Us Our Debts’ Sub Mission is nearly at the endgame, Artlien no longer spawns at this point and there is no way to spend money that you do not have other than to get arrested and pay the fine. However, getting arrested is permanently recorded in Record. If you want to avoid this, the only way is to get into debt is to do so before ‘Mother Soul Arrives’

(SPOILER ALERT) Determining which Ending you will go for:

Sister Ending: Give her 1 million yen in a single playthrough. That’s it. However, it should be noted that the Imouto ending will overwrite the other endings (Shadow Soul, Coexistence and NIRO). It is best to do the Imouto route on an ending that you have already seen.

Hidden Endings (within the Coexistence ending): In the Coexistence route, there are two characters that you can opt to save them without killing them. This will slightly change what the characters say at the Epilogue. 1. Yu Abeno – During the prologue (the part with Sejima and Mido), if you let him go, the game would give you the option to let him go after defeating him during the final battle. Otherwise, this will result in him dying after you defeat him. 2. Mother Soul (Rei Anekoji) – You must complete the Paparazzi Sub Mission DIRECTLY before the final mission. This side quest only has a very short window and is only available during the The Siege of Akihabara and before going to UD+ for the final fights. This side quest will need you to obtain a Photo of Rui. If you do so, an additional dialogue option (“Rui’s father is close by right now”) will appear just as Rei is going to commit suicide. Saying that her father is nearby watching would give her the courage to continue living. Any other option will result in her death. If done successfully, the Nickname ‘Hope Bringer’ can be obtained. In the Paparazzi Sub Mission, DO NOT answer ‘You’re no father at all’ and DO NOT let Rui know that you are doing for a client or else, the mission will fail instantly and Rei will die after the final battle

What carries over in New Game Plus Mode?

akibas trip hellbound debriefed next game

Interview: Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed and What Could Come Next

Image of Jenni Lada

The Akiba’s series is now complete. People worldwide can play all three installments, now that Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed is available on multiple platforms. To help go over how this updated release came to be, design decisions, and even possibilities about the next Akiba’s Trip game, Siliconera got in touch with Director Tomonori Imura to talk about the title.

Jenni Lada, Siliconera: What made Acquire decide to return to the original Akiba’s Trip for the series’ 10th anniversary?
Tomonori Imura, Acquire: Even our Japanese fans were enthusiastic about the remaster since they could only play the original game on the outdated PSP, so we decided to have the AKBHD release coincide with its 10th anniversary celebration.

akiba's trip hellbound and debriefed next game 2

Once games reach a certain age, it might get more difficult to find assets. Were there any issues when preparing Akiba’s Trip for an HD rebuild?

Imura: To give you some background information, our company has a lot of experience developing historical Japanese games like the Tenchu, Way of the Samurai, and Shinobido series. Akiba’s Trip was sort of experimental in that we wanted to try making a modern title with the same game engine.

That experimental nature meant we could focus on making it as ridiculously fun as possible, but unfortunately we didn’t manage our game assets very well. As you can imagine, we had a hell of a time locating the original assets for the remaster.

We also ran into problems recreating Akihabara, the capital of electronics and moe, from a decade ago. A lot of time has passed since the original release, so it was difficult to include certain businesses for a variety of reasons, such as not being able to get the rights for ones that no longer exist.

The name of the creatures varies between the first and second Akiba’s Trip games, as we have Shadow Souls and Synthisters. What made the team decide to go with slightly different antagonists for each game?

Imura: We want players to have a fresh experience with every game in the series. For Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed , we kept the core “strip action” system intact while creating a new world and story.

That said, some fans have asked for a direct sequel to the original Akiba’s Trip , so if I had the chance, I’d love to create a new game that explores the fates of the Shadow Souls.

akiba's trip hellbound debriefed next akiba's trip

When preparing the 10th anniversary version of Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed for new platforms, did you consider adding elements from sequels? How did you decide which elements to prioritize during development?

Imura: We decided to remaster the original because we wanted North American and European fans to experience Akiba’s Trip in the same way Japanese fans originally did.

But after hearing everyone’s feedback, I think it would’ve been nice to include additional stories and epilogues that highlighted all the great characters in every ending.

There are multiple difficulty options in Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed . How did you work on balancing for each level?

Imura: Besides simply changing NPC attack and defense stats, we also tweaked their AI. Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed looks like a casual game, but it’s actually a fighting game at its core. For each difficulty level, we adjusted the rate at which NPCs would respond to the player’s decisions with specific actions.

akiba's trip next hellbound debriefed

The Akiba’s Trip series changed direction a bit with Akiba’s Beat . If you had the resources and time, what do you think the next Akiba’s Trip game might look like?

Imura: We approach the Akiba’s Trip series with open minds. As long as we can combine the Akihabara setting with a plausible threat and ridiculous action-oriented gameplay, the sky’s the limit. For our next title, I’d like to give our players a novel experience while taking the “strip action” gameplay to a whole new level.  For example…

“Akihabara–home to electronics, moe, idols, vampires, aliens, and constant change–is under attack by an unknown entity!
Whether it’s in the past, the present, or the future, almost anything is possible in Akihabara if you know where to look! Your actions will decide Akihabara’s fate.
Who will you face in your next strip battle, and how will that fight unfold? Battle it out on the streets of Akihabara in next-gen anime graphics!”

I dream of the possibilities…

And then there’s Akiba’s Beat , which centers around a crazy cool gameplay style and literal delusions in the Akihabara setting. It might also be fun to take the series in new directions gameplay-wise while still keeping it all in Akihabara.

Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed Review (Nintendo Switch)

Akiba's Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed Review (Nintendo Switch)

If the extremely specific fantasy of being a vampire hunter living in Japan sounds enticing, then you’re in luck. Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed is a ported version of the 2011 Japanese title that has made its way to the west for the first time a decade after its release. This game combines camp and pervy humor with unique combat mechanics to tell a story, and the player’s choices determine which side of the battle they fall on.

The player begins Akiba’s Trip in a back alley as the mostly-silent protagonist Nanashi (though the name is customizable). Nanashi goes to help a friend who was being attacked in an alley. He winds up in danger nearly killed by a Shadow Soul, human-like creatures who feed on the blood of humans and cannot be exposed to the sun for too long. Just as he’s near death, a young woman comes and gives him some of her blood, saving him from his horrible fate.

Rui Fumizuki in Akiba's Trip Hellbound and Debriefed

As his savior flees the scene, a group of friends known as “Akiba’s Freedom Fighters” show up to help save Nanashi at the same time as NIRO, an agency that works to protect Akihabara from the Shadow Souls. NIRO informs Nanashi that he, not only has become a Shadow Soul, but also that the blood he took was essentially that of the vampire’s royal bloodline making him incredibly strong. NIRO tasks the Freedom Fighters and Nanashi to help take down the Shadow Souls by learning how to strip people down to their underwear, exposing these vampires to the sun and killing them.

The majority of gameplay focuses on the battle system, which allows Nanashi to strip the clothes of Shadow Souls and humans alike. Depending on the difficulty level, players must either hit their opponents with a weapon to take off their clothes or target specific areas to damage a piece of clothing. The game also works on tank controls, which are not as common in modern games and may cause some confusion. This, combined with occasional button delays, can be frustrating and be the difference between life and death for Nanashi.

Combat and Stripping Clothing

Across Akihabara are different manuals on how to expertly strip different kinds of clothing, and Nanashi will often need to make a trip to “The Master” to learn specific techniques for outfits like cosplay or school uniforms. The A, B, X, and Y buttons will allow you to attack your opponents, and at high enough difficulty each button only responds to a specific item of clothing on your enemy. If you manage to wear them down enough, holding the button will allow you to strip your opponent of that item and possibly start a strip chain. However, if you have not attacked the enemy enough, you will be entered into a tug of war for the clothing item that becomes frustratingly harder without appropriate upgrades. Searching for those upgrades can sometimes eat up a lot of time. Any item of clothing can be stripped with enough damage, however you will need to purchase guides on specific clothing types in order to pull the item off without tearing it. Combat relies heavily on needing to find the appropriate materials to succeed, so someone who dislikes min-maxing characters or fetch quest-like missions may find this part tedious. That being said, the battle system can work smoothly especially if you perfect the strip chain during a fight.

Mechanics of Akiba's Trip Hellbound and Debriefed

Akiba’s Trip provides multiple levels of difficulty. Upon first playthrough, you can choose from Easy, Casual and Gamer modes which determine how hard it is to strip clothing from your enemies and make your own clothes easier or harder to hit. The higher the difficulty, the more you will need to upgrade your gear and block incoming attacks effectively. After completing the game on Gamer mode, if you want a greater challenge, you may take on Otaku difficulty.

Building Your Armor

The game also contains a variety of extra mechanics, such as providing a room where your sister can buff an article of clothing or make the character extra durable. Several shops around the area sell upgrade materials which you can use to enhance a piece of clothing if you are particularly attached to it, and other items like a can of oden or UV sunscreen can buff attacks or allow an extra few seconds of protection beyond what clothes provide. Nanashi’s enemies are also attempting to strip him of his outfit, and since he is now a Shadow Soul as well, exposure to the sun means death.

Character sprites in Akiba's Trip Hellbound and Debriefed

You can also make battles easier by changing or upgrading outfits and weapons. There are a variety of customizations found across the game in stores and during missions which often result in Nanashi fighting while wearing a ridiculous costume or while using a loaf of bread or computer monitor as his weapon. Pieces from the same set might not always be the best equipment you have in the game and may result in your character wearing a magical girl outfit with a frog hat or some other equally ridiculous combination. Better outfits and weapons are crucial to succeeding in the game, especially when facing multiple enemies at once during a battle.

Seeking out clothes and stripping manuals is one of the more unique things about Akiba’s Trip however. Akihabara works in a sort of sandbox format, allowing players to hop from place to place and explore the area. While you are somewhat limited in where you can explore in certain areas, you are still given quite a bit of leeway when it comes to searching through shops and interacting with NPCs. This includes beating up any random person you see on the street. Some may threaten you or ask for your help, and you can choose to comply or take them for all they’re worth. That being said, there is an internal meter within the game that monitors you’re reputation, and if you beat up too many bystanders, you might just find them running away from you.

While the game’s graphics are not particularly impressive and appear to not have changed much from the PSP release a decade ago, the 2D sprites are lovely and provide a lot of emotion to the supporting characters. Some of the character designs can be a bit lacking, especially when it comes to male characters, but Yuu and Sara’ models are standouts and provide a distinct silhouette. While there aren’t many special CGs included in the game, the ones that can be found in each ending are lovely and show off the characters in focus well.

MUSIC AND VOICE ACTING

Akiba’s Trip soundtrack is passable, providing a few interesting battle themes and a catchy song that plays upon entering every shop in Akihabara. With the exception of the ending songs and opening sequence, it leaves a lot to be desired, particularly when it is forced to be the backdrop to the voice acting. The performances range from passable to excellent and the cast features some voiceover heavyweights, like Chermi Leigh as NIRO agent Satoko Midou and Ericka Lindbeck as Shadow Soul princess Rui Fumizuki. These two are definitely the standouts of the entire cast. Unfortunately, this does highlight just how much of a silent protagonist the main character is especially during one-on-one scenes.

REPLAY VALUE

One of Akiba’s Trip’s greatest strengths is its replay value. The game contains three main routes depending on certain choices you make throughout the playthrough. Each one is a fully-contained story in itself and might leave players satisfied, but to get the whole story it is highly encouraged to play through all three main routes.

Side missions

During the course of the game, there are several detours players can take. Side missions are offered organically during the story at times, while others will need to be manually sought out and can even change minor things during the main endings. It can be extremely easy to forgo these in favor of the core story, so an extra playthrough just to focus on the side missions might be beneficial to you. There are also a variety of other aspects one may focus on, such as arcade mini games and maid cafes, which in turn might unlock special battles with characters or secret endings otherwise not accessible. The game also encourages you to collect as many kinds of clothing as possible, which depending on your route, might take more than a few attempts to get them all.

Akiba's Trip Hellbound and Debriefed gameplay

Akiba’s Trip also incorporates a sort of New Game Plus mode, where subsequent playthroughs allow you to keep equipment and skills for the new route as well as certain character models you might have unlocked in the previous run. These will make a new route easier if you want to tackle Gamer difficulty in order to unlock Otaku mode. However, certain other aspects like money do not carry over, so you won’t be sitting quite as cushy as you might like.

Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed is an interesting mix of pervy campy fun and genuine moral quandaries about who deserves to live and die. Most of the time, the game manages to balance the two aspects, but it does fall short at times causing some tonal whiplash, especially in side missions. Additionally, when characters are fleshed out, they feel real and compelling, but others are left as cookie-cutter stereotypes. For those of you looking for a simple game to sink several hours into, who like relatively simple brawlers, or who love to collect items in video games, Akiba’s Trip will satisfy. However, if you aren’t a fan of combat or get easily frustrated by messy controls, the story alone simply isn’t worth it. Additionally, anyone put off by innuendos should steer clear of the game. While there isn’t anything graphic, the game does play with the concept of stripping, so be on alert.

Final rating: 6/10

About This Game

Key features, mature content description.

The developers describe the content like this:

This game uses a stripping mechanic that leaves enemies in their underwear after combat. One game mode allows players to dress a female character in a revealing outfit (e.g., lingerie/underwear) and follow the camera as it moves around her figure. The game text and dialogue also contain sexual references. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in dialogue. In one fighting mini-game, players use knives and cleavers to slash at each other, resulting in brief splashes of blood.
