36 Hours in Sarasota, Fla.

A brilliant orange sunset over a calm ocean. In the foreground, people stand on the shore looking at the spectacle.

Often overlooked in favor of Tampa to the north and Miami to the south, Sarasota, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is a laid-back city that seems content to keep its white-sand beaches out of the spotlight. The city of 55,000 has long been home to the Ringling museum complex , set on a picturesque bay, where visitors can find artworks by Peter Paul Rubens, Titian and El Greco, and a circus museum. There’s plenty for nature lovers, too: Spot alligators, manatees and dolphins; meander beneath stately banyan trees; and take a kayak for a spin through the wild mangroves. These days, the city is abuzz with developments, including an expansion of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the opening of a 1920s house-museum in Newtown, the city’s historic Black district.

Recommendations

  • Siesta Beach , the pride and joy of locals, offers miles of soft sand that’s great to lounge or stroll on, as well as expansive views of the Gulf.
  • The Ringling is a complex of museums and gardens where visitors can discover such delights as a 3,800-square-foot model of an early 20th-century circus.
  • Meliora captures the high-low spirit of Sarasota with unfussy decor and sophisticated seafood dishes.
  • Kayak tours from Kayaking SRQ and Liquid Blue Outfitters take visitors through mangroves and Sarasota Bay, providing the chance to spot dolphins, manatees, starfish, crabs and more.
  • At Myakka River State Park , a kayak rental will get you up close and personal with alligators.
  • Newtown Alive offers trolley tours that trace the struggles and successes of residents of Sarasota’s historic Black neighborhood.
  • Leonard Reid House is a new museum in Newtown that was once the home of one of the city’s first Black settlers.
  • Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has a new gallery with living specimens from the Gardens’ collection of 35,000 preserved plants, a conservatory with displays of flowering orchids and walkways shaded by banyans, ficus and mangroves.
  • Lakewood Ranch Farmers’ Market offers live music, food stands and various events for kids, like arts and crafts or storytelling.
  • Shack , a popular fitness studio, runs jam-packed yoga and pilates classes.
  • Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar is a seafood lover’s paradise, with peel-and-eat shrimp, lobster tails, calamari, oysters and, for those inclined, fried gator.
  • Project Coffee , a vegan cafe with several locations in Sarasota, has a menu that adds a little fun to brunch classics, like a frozen açaí bowl with cornflakes and black-sesame crumble.
  • Sage , a restaurant inside a historic 1926 building that once housed the Sarasota Times newspaper, has a swanky rooftop bar with live music on Fridays.
  • Siesta Key Oyster Bar has festive cocktails and live music nightly.
  • Gilligan’s Island Bar has a loungey backyard with swings; pop, disco and reggaeton tunes set a dancey vibe.
  • The Resort at Longboat Key , renovated in 2020, sits on 410 acres of land on a barrier island off Sarasota. Besides a private beach, the hotel has its own golf course, tennis gardens and a spa. Rooms start at $999 a night.
  • Kompose Hotel , near the airport, allows guests to book a room at a base price and pay for customizations, like use of the pool and jacuzzi ($5 per day), or the Peloton bike ($10 per hour); a sauna session ($35 per person); or accommodating a dog ($75 per stay). Rooms start at $250.
  • Timberline Glamping Co. offers luxury tents in Oscar Scherer State Park equipped with linens, rugs, lamps, electric outlets, heating or air-conditioning, mini fridges and Keurig coffee makers. The site provides hammocks, a charcoal grill, a wood fire pit and a picnic table. There’s a shared bathhouse with toilets and showers. Tents from $169.
  • For short-term rentals , look in the Alta Vista or Laurel Park neighborhoods for proximity to Sarasota’s downtown at reasonable prices. Rentals on Siesta Key, a barrier island connected to Sarasota by two bridges, are more expensive, but offer easy beach access, free trolley service and small town charm.
  • The best way to get around Sarasota is by car , whether it's a rental or via ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft. An on-demand ridesharing service called Breeze OnDemand runs in downtown Sarasota, on Siesta Key, on Longboat Key and on Lido Key, and costs $2 per person; book through the app . Free trolleys run along Siesta Key and Lido Key, and between Lido Key and downtown Sarasota. Track the Lido Key trolleys with the Bay Runner app . The Siesta Key Breeze trolley runs approximately every half hour.

Jack Nicklaus greets past PLAYERS champions on first tee Thursday

73-time tour winner won three players titles, including inaugural event in 1974.

Change Text Size

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Fifty years ago, Jack Nicklaus won the first edition of THE PLAYERS Championship. He’s not competing this year, but a Thursday grouping of fellow PLAYERS champions would’ve been happy to have him.

“You playing with us today?” Justin Thomas asked Nicklaus with a smile on the first tee Thursday, as the 2021 PLAYERS champion readied to begin his opening round alongside defending champion Scottie Scheffler and 2015 PLAYERS winner Rickie Fowler.

“We only have three,” Thomas noted.

Nicklaus smiled but graciously declined the offer, before exchanging some banter with the trio ahead of its 1:40 p.m. tee time at TPC Sawgrass’ PLAYERS Stadium Course. “Not a bad finish,” he told Scheffler of his five-stroke win at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. The world No. 1 Scheffler offered a sheepish smile in return.

Jack Nicklaus greets players on first tee at THE PLAYERS

This year marks the 50th edition of THE PLAYERS, which has been contested at TPC Sawgrass since 1982. Nicklaus won three of the first five PLAYERS titles – 1974 at Atlanta Country Club, 1976 at Inverrary Golf & Country Club, and 1978 at nearby Sawgrass Country Club.

Since TPC Sawgrass’ tournament debut in 1982 – Nicklaus competed but missed the cut – the Northeast Florida venue has evolved from “rugged and wild, to a big, beautiful park,” as Roger Maltbie said Thursday on Golf Channel’s tournament broadcast.

Did Nicklaus then have an idea of the event’s future?

“Well, no, we didn’t know, but I wanted to win it because Deane (Beman) wanted to make it as big a tournament as he could make it,” Nicklaus said on Golf Channel’s broadcast, “and I said, ‘I want to get it on my list, just in case they decided to make it a major.’

Jack Nicklaus dominates early years of THE PLAYERS Championship

“It’s very pretty,” he said of TPC Sawgrass. “The first tee here has totally changed, the stands around the first tee were mound stands … everything’s different, but the golf course is in beautiful shape. It’s the kind of golf course that, you have a day like today, they’ll shoot good scores, (but) you have a day like we can have in Jacksonville, you get some bad scores.”

Nicklaus won 73 PGA TOUR titles, including 18 majors and those three PLAYERS titles, in a Hall of Fame career that puts him firmly in the conversation for greatest player of all time. Scheffler was born in 1996, 10 years after Nicklaus won the 1986 Masters for his 73rd and final TOUR win, but the cross-generation respect endures – Scheffler offered a “Mr. Nicklaus” greeting on the first tee Thursday.

Scheffler teed off, Nicklaus applauded, and the world No. 1 began his chase of a repeat PLAYERS title – a rare distinction that Nicklaus, despite three PLAYERS wins in five years, never achieved.

Princess makeovers and $18K dinners: How to spend a fortune at Disney

For a cool $500,000, you too can have an ultra luxury disney honeymoon, complete with a custom gown and carriage.

jack tour and travel

For some Disney fans, waiting in ride lines and dining with the masses at the theme parks just won’t do.

Those seeking a lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous experience can be ushered through lines by a dedicated guide for as much as $900 an hour; watch fireworks from a private boat for $450; or spend three hours sampling food and wine in the kitchen of a fine-dining restaurant for $635 a person. Not pricey enough? There’s always the $18,000 private dinner experience.

Plenty of people are paying for these experiences; in some cases, demand is so high that there’s a waiting list.

“There are a number of people out there where money is no object,” said Greg Antonelle, co-owner of the travel agency MickeyTravels . “I’m a little jealous.”

He said a five-day trip with VIP access, fancy food and luxury accommodations could easily add up to $30,000 to $40,000.

The Walt Disney Company has made headlines for exorbitant prices, including the now-closed $5,000 Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel and role-playing experience and $115,000 private jet excursion to every global Disney park. Even entry-level visitors complain about ticket prices, food costs and the relatively new expense of skipping lines .

The company offers more budget-friendly options, with the cheapest ticket priced at $104 or $109 in California and Florida respectively. In low season, a value-priced hotel room at Disney World runs for about $155 a night.

“Like other vacation destinations, we give our guests lots of options to customize their Disney experience,” Disney spokesperson Avery Maehrer said in a statement.

Still, some fans complain that a Disney vacation has become so costly that it’s out of reach for the middle class, even without luxury upgrades. Between tickets, hotel, food and souvenirs, even a penny-pinching trip can set a family of four back more than $3,000.

For those who have never pinched a penny in their lives — or just saved for a special-occasion splurge — Disney provides a host of options . The extras range from pricey add-ons to truly aspirational indulgence.

$450-an-hour VIP tour

Consider some of the most annoying aspects of a Disney trip — parking, hiking to the gate, queuing to get in, then standing in, line for rides all day. Now imagine avoiding all of that. That’s the promise of a VIP guide who will pick you up, sweep you through backstage entrances and usher you onto rides with minimal or no waits.

The convenience doesn’t come cheap. At Walt Disney World, the tour costs between $450 and $900 an hour, depending on the time of year, with a minimum of seven hours and maximum of 10. Ten people can be part of the group. Park admission is not included — and neither is a tip.

Antonelle said his company has clients who will book 10 days at Disney World and opt for VIP tours for seven of those days. He said it’s not uncommon to see a plaid-wearing VIP tour guide carry a family’s food trays at restaurants or push strollers with the group.

Cara Goldsbury, president and founder of the luxury Disney travel agency Glass Slipper Concierge , said the guides also share stories, trivia and history, and provide access to special viewing areas for parades and nighttime shows.

“That’s the only way to do it as far as most of our clients are concerned,” she said.

$185 photo package

Photographers are stationed all over Disney World parks to take photos of guests, but those snapshots aren’t free. To get downloads of all the pictures from an entire trip, including from rides, the “Memory Maker” package costs $185 if purchased in advance, or $210 during the vacation.

For those who want more time with a photographer, or don’t want to wait for six other families to get that shot in front of the castle, Disney offers private 20-minute photo sessions for $99.

Staci Kimball, a travel adviser and vice president of GSC World Travel , a sister company to Glass Slipper Concierge, said clients care more about memories and experiences than merchandise.

“We really do always recommend either a private photo session or certainly buying the Memory Maker photo package so they can capture all of those memories,” she said.

$250 custom lightsaber

Mickey Mouse ears, popcorn buckets and bubble wands are always in demand, but some travelers want to have a role in making their souvenirs.

Kimball said she helps clients book the Savi’s Workshop experience, where Star Wars-loving visitors can custom-build their own lightsaber. It costs about $250 at Hollywood Studio s in Florida and $220 at Disneyland in California .

“That is a really popular, popular activity,” she said. “That can also be hard to get.”

Another in-demand interactive gadget: a build-your-own droid for about $120 in Florida and $100 in California .

$449 fireworks cruise

Don’t want to brave crowds for fireworks? There are a number of ways to get a better view — including from the water.

Starting at $449, a private fireworks cruise at Disney World can seat up to 10 people and includes snacks and drinks. Chartered boats set sail from several hotels to view the fireworks show at Epcot and Magic Kingdom.

“What we’ve learned is people that are spending exorbitant amounts of money on their vacation, they don’t like waiting in lines, number one, and they don’t like being 20 rows of people back for fireworks,” Antonelle said. Sure, fireworks are overhead, but who really wants to camp out for a good spot and look at hundreds of other necks craning if they can avoid it?

$450 princess makeover

Kids who dream of being royalty, or just looking like the product of a fairy godmother’s magic wand, can visit Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom or Disneyland Park .

Packages start at $99.95 for the princess treatment in both locations or $19.95 for a knight’s look in Florida and $49.95 in California. The most expensive option, starting at $450, includes a “signature Disney Princess gown,” crystal tiara, garment bag, hairstyling, makeup, sash, face gem and nail polish.

“I just did Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique with my 5-year-old granddaughter,” said Goldsbury, who wrote “ The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World Resort .” “It was the most darling experience.”

$7,900-plus a night hotel

Goldsbury said her company prefers to book clients at Disney World’s priciest, most conveniently located — or “deluxe” — resorts, especially those connected by monorail to the Magic Kingdom. Some rooms have “club level” designation with lounges and free food, she said.

A search of available inventory shows a club-level two-bedroom suite at the Grand Floridian for $3,597 a night in early April of 2025. The Polynesian’s King Kamehameha suite is listed for $3,320 in late August of 2025, a typical slow season.

In California, the two-bedroom Mickey Mouse suite at the Disneyland Hotel is going for about $5,025 in June of this year, and the two-bedroom Mount Whitney suite at the Grand Californian is listed for a whopping $7,984 a night in June.

For some travelers, deluxe hotel prices pose zero problems. Antonelle said he books a “royal family from overseas” at a Disney World deluxe resort.

“They’ll book out literally dozens of rooms because they’re bringing their nannies, they’re bringing their security,” he said.

$18,000 private dining experience

Disney parks are full of budget-stretching drinking and dining options. But three-course dinner inspired by “Beauty and the Beast?” Get ready to shell out $70 per adult. A tequila tasting with a “certified Tequila Ambassador” costs $180 per person. The Chef’s Table at Victoria & Albert’s, a restaurant at the Grand Floridian Resort, is a hot ticket at $635 a person for wine and food.

21 Royal, a private dining experience situated atop Pirates of the Caribbean in California, may take the cake. It costs $18,000 for a group as large as 12 and promises transportation, a reception, opportunity to explore the apartment-type surroundings, a meal on gold-plated dinnerware and balcony dessert with a view of evening entertainment.

AJ Wolfe, owner of the Disney Food Blog , has eaten at 21 Royal twice.

“It was luxurious for sure — the food was wonderful, and I felt like a VIP,” she wrote in an email. “Also, for a Disney history nerd it’s amazing because you know that Walt was integral in thinking about that space — maybe not the decor necessarily, but the layout.”

$95,000 top-floor hotel buyout

The Four Seasons Resort Orlando, near the theme parks, allows guests to rent out its entire 16th floor , which includes balconies with a view of fireworks at Epcot and Magic Kingdom. While the hotel isn’t operated by Disney, advisers say it’s a good fit for luxury travelers who are used to five-star service.

According to the resort, the cost for the top floor is $95,000 a night, plus tax. On a smaller but still extremely expensive scale, prices for the Presidential Suite start at $19,000 a night and $22,000 a night for the Royal Suite.

$500,000 honeymoon

Jennifer Kozlow, a travel adviser and vice president of Glass Slipper Concierge, said she had clients who spent their five-week honeymoon at Disney World. The trip included transportation to a special event in a carriage, a custom gown, private dining as the characters from “Beauty and the Beast” danced, a special fireworks viewing and VIP tours every other day for the five-week stretch. The couple stayed in presidential suites at four different hotels.

Another client managed to spend the same amount of money in a much shorter stretch: four days. Kozlow said the group — a family of 37 — bought out the top floor of the Four Seasons to celebrate the matriarch’s 80th birthday. The family had private meals delivered to their suites so relatives could come and go. The group did daily VIP tours using four guides.

“They flew in on a private plane just to see the resort,” Kozlow said.

There is one thing money can’t buy, she said.

“People do ask: Can they get a character to come to their suite? That you definitely can’t do,” Kozlow said. “They don’t tuck you in at night.”

More about Disney

Outsiders banned: Disney theme park trips cost a lot — more every year — and take heaps of planning to pull off. But the company has recently banned some independent tour guides from helping visitors navigate the parks, citing “unauthorized commercial activities.”

Next-level fandom: For some Disney fans, donning a pair of Mickey ears isn’t enough. In a practice called “ Disneybounding ,” they create entire character-inspired outfits that don’t run afoul of rules that ban costumes for adults. Disney food fans had a reason to celebrate when a beloved snack, Dole Whip , came to grocery stores. How does it stack up to the parks version?

Political crossfire: The most magical place on earth has gotten political , thanks to a battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). While several observers have suggested Disney World move out of the Sunshine State, experts say it’s a goofy proposition. Fan sites have been forced to add coverage of lawsuits to their standard lineup about rides, churros and characters.

Moonshine tastings and tour bus sleepovers: the best new Dolly Parton experiences

The country icon’s Tennessee home has welcomed a wave of fan experiences, with everything from moonshine tastings to tour bus sleepovers.

The Queen of Country is a titan of the American music scene — Dolly Parton's theme park alone attracts more than three million travellers each year. And now, the Dollyverse is expanding with the opening of a new star-spangled resort in the majestic Great Smoky Mountains, alongside a string of other developments. From updates on her long-awaited HeartSong Lodge & Resort to the new star roller coaster, here are her latest hits.

1. Dollywood adds new attractions

Dolly’s theme park, 15 miles from her eastern Tennessee birthplace, recently received a revamp. The new star of the show is Big Bear Mountain, the longest roller-coaster at Dollywood , which takes two two minutes to whizz around nearly 4,000ft of track. If looping-the-loop isn’t your vibe, head to the freshly unveiled Dolly Parton Experience, an interactive exhibition charting Dolly’s rags-to-rhinestones story.

2. Her tour bus offers a superstar sleepover

For almost 15 years, Dolly’s customised tour bus faithfully ferried the Queen of Country and her sky-high wig collection across the US. With the vehicle now in retirement at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort, fans can peek inside the singer’s maximalist wardrobe before sleeping in her fuchsia velvet bed. The Suite 1986 Tour Bus Experience also offers a lavish meal with wine, as well as the option to book a cruise around the mountainous landscape in a custom hot-pink Jeep.

3. Moonshine gets hip

Moonshine, an eye-wateringly strong corn whisky, was once the tipple of choice for Prohibition-era bootleggers. Today, Dolly’s niece, Danielle Parton, is part of a growing movement to update the drink’s clandestine image with the opening of her Tennessee microdistillery, Shine Girl . Take a tour before pulling up a stool at the bar, where red-velvet-flavoured cocktails are occasionally shaken by Danielle herself.

4. Destination Dollywood opens a new resort

The long-awaited HeartSong Lodge & Resort opened its doors at the end of 2023. Riffing on Dolly’s love of the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the 302-room hotel spotlights the wonders of the surrounding wilderness. In the rustic lobby, guests gather around a crackling log fire, while images of the region’s black bears pepper the lodge’s suites and rooms.

5. The Queen of Country and King of Rock & Roll unite

A new nine-day tour from Newmarket Holidays brings together two titans of American music for an unforgettable road trip. Pit stops on the Ultimate Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton Experience include Elvis’s birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Nashville’s RCA Studio B: the small but mighty hit factory where Dolly laid down her legendary track Coat of Many Colors.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Step inside the grand suites on the world's most famous train, which start at $26,000 a night and come with around-the-clock butler service

  • The Venice Simpon-Orient-Express is a luxury overnight train in Europe.
  • The train's grand suite, starting at $26,000 a night, is the top tier of accommodation.
  • Each grand suite has a private bathroom with a rainfall showerhead and extravagant decor.

Insider Today

Hundred-year-old carriages from the Orient Express fleet make up the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , Belmond's revamp of the iconic luxury sleeper train. With 60 routes in 17 cities, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is perhaps the most luxurious train in Europe . Prices start at $9,000 a night.

The train's top-tier accommodation is a grand suite. With a starting rate of $26,000 a night, these rooms are filled with luxury details and amenities unique to any other cabin on board, from a private shower to around-the-clock butler service.

Business Insider recently took a tour of the rooms as a cabin steward explained the details of each suite.

Look inside the train's most extravagant accommodations to peek at the luxury journey of a lifetime.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the epitome of luxury train travel in Europe.

Guests are welcomed on red carpets for an overnight journey with lavishly decorated vintage carriages, fine dining restaurants, and jaw-dropping views of passing scenery.

The train has six grand suite accommodations — each with a unique design.

Grand suites are the third tier of accommodation — one step above a suite and two steps above a historic cabin .

Each grand suite is inspired by a city on the train's routes, including Venice, Vienna, Istanbul, Budapest, and Prague.

They all include a couch, a double bed that can be converted into two twins, a dining area, and a full en-suite bathroom.

All six have a full bathroom with a rainfall showerhead.

Each bathroom has a glass-blown sink, heated marble flooring, and a rainfall showerhead.

Grand-suite guests also get complimentary bathrobes and slippers.

Next to each bathroom is a closet with additional storage space so guests can fully unpack and feel at home.

Each has a dining area, too.

Grand-suite guests are greeted with caviar upon arrival and can dine in their rooms rather than in the restaurant cars if they prefer.

They also get 24-hour butler service and bottomless champagne for the entire journey, the cabin steward told BI.

The Venice grand suite fuses Italian Baroque and Renaissance design.

Venetian furniture, vintage glass light fixtures, and a combination of silk and woven fabrics fill this suite with a historic Italian ambiance. Navy-blue velvets are reminiscent of the train's exterior.

The headboard combining arches and sharp edges may remind one of the Renaissance castles in Italy .

Emerald and golden details mark the Vienna suite.

The suite has a classic feel with dark wood contrasting gold trimmings.

According to a Belmond fact sheet obtained by BI, the headboard backing is made of silk to evoke a sense of elegance. Its curved shape and the tassel detailing in the bed's skirt may remind travelers of the historic city's regal palaces .

The Istanbul suite feels like a Turkish palace.

jack tour and travel

Shiny, hand-carved wood from the furniture to the walls is a work of art. For those who have been to the Turkish city of Istanbul , the embossed leather and fabric embroiderings may bring back memories of the city's opulent offerings at the famous and historic Grand Bazaar market .

Gothic and Ottoman architectural styles inspired the Budapest suite.

The Budapest suite is decorated with ornate marquetry and furniture with embroidered silk patterns. The tall, curved headboard may remind travelers of Gothic cathedrals and mosques that date back to the Ottoman Empire .

The Paris suite is meant to evoke romantic vibes.

Headlines in History 1935: Jack Russell and his 12-piece band to perform at Palais Royale

W hat was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

March 10, 1908: “Box cars on the Grand Trunk storage tracks near the Interior Transfer Elevator company caught fire early to-day from an unknown origin and only prompt action of the railroad employees saved a heavy loss.” — The South Bend Tribune

March 11, 1911: “Privileges assured River Park residents when the town became a part of South Bend are beginning to be realized. The Northern Indiana railway is now issuing transfers from points in River Park to the city lines of the street car system and vice versa.” — The South Bend Tribune

March 12, 1924: “Construction work on two new additions to St. Mary’s college and academy will begin March 19. One of the buildings will be used as a dormitory, the other a classroom. Both will be for the use of college students only. They will cost a total of $900,000. The structures are to be of collegiate Gothic style of architecture composed of reinforced concrete brick, and trimmed with limestone.” — The South Bend Tribune

March 13, 1935: “Jack Russell and his 12-piece band, favorites of Chicago’s leading hotels and cafes, will play Sunday night for a St. Patrick’s day party to be given in the Palais Royale ballroom, Myron Walz, manager, announced today. Russell is coming to South Bend from Chicago.” — The South Bend Tribune

March 14, 1940: “Numerous inquiries on the part of property owners whose streets are included in the 1940 city-sponsored WPA street improvement program were reported today by City Engineer Clyde E. Williams but few property owners have made payment as yet with City Controller Harry S. Driggs for materials. Cost of new concrete streets or concrete resurfacing will be $1 per square yard to property owners.” — The South Bend Tribune

March 15, 1957: “Observations by several transportation leaders, dooming railroad passenger traffic to extinction and the freight car to the Smithsonian Institution, were derided Thursday night by a railroad president who charged that 'the main backbone of mass transportation will continue to be the railroad.'” — The South Bend Tribune

March 16, 1967: “Kaiser Jeep Corp., which has built up an annual payroll of more than $7 million in the three years since it opened its South Bend Division, today marked the 50,000th military vehicle to come off the line at its Chippewa Ave. plant.” — The South Bend Tribune
