A Detailed Look At The Kawasaki Motorcycle That Tom Cruise Rode In Top Gun

The Kawasaki GPZ900R that Maverick rides in Top Gun is one of the most iconic movie motorcycles of all time.

Hollywood movies have always seen extravagance taking a center stage. The more the action, the more the entertainment and, of course, more money coming in for studios. Motorcycles have always added to the drama unlike anything else, from heroes to villains . That's because motorcycles are cool! Right? Well, motorcycles have impacted the lives of many young people, so that says a lot right there. Many people would agree that motorcycle are indeed cultural icons.

Some movies that have featured motorcycles, and which have made a huge cultural impact include the Wild One starring Marlon Brando and of course Top Gun that sees Tom Cruise racing an old Kawasaki superbike.

Tom Cruise is a person who had enough screen time with a number of motorcycles . The Hollywood action hero’s influence on bikes goes a long way. With the number of bikes he’d cast in movies along with owning a few, it’s better said that when it comes to motorcycles, Tom Cruise and Hollywood go hand in hand, and everybody remembers the Kawasaki GPZ900R Maverick rides in Top Gun.

Update November 2022: Tom Cruise may have had another big blockbuster with the new Top Gun: Maverick movie, but we still can't stop talking about the old Kawasaki GPZ900R motorcycle he rode in the original Top Gun movie, and which also made an appearance in the new one.

The Kawasaki GPZ900R Is Special

One of the reasons that made the GPZ900R a legend is the fact that it was considered as the predecessor of the modern-day sportbikes, much like how the Lamborghini Miura is to supercars . Part of the reason why this Kawasaki superbike rose to fame was its cameo in Top Gun. Setting that aside, the bike alone was very innovative for the mid-1980s. Kawasaki launched the GPZ900R, affectionately called ‘GPZ’ in 1985 . It was a sub-liter sports bike, regarded as the spiritual successor to the Kawasaki Z1. A year prior to launching the GPZ, the ZX750 Turbo caught a lot of attention for the amount of engineering it brought to the table. But, the GPZ was a closely kept secret for almost six years, while the ZX750 saw development start in 1981.

The ZX750 was brought in much earlier despite its short development period, while Kawasaki took its time for the GPZ900R. When the GPZ came out, the bike left everyone awestruck with the amount of sophisticated technology it had for that time. It was so capable that six months after being unveiled to the press, dealers entered three works GPZ900R bikes in the Isle of Man Production TT, and finishing in first and second on the podium.

Given that Isle of Man is one of the prestigious yet notoriously dangerous motorcycle races known to mankind, excelling in that race was an incredible feat for the bike. This along with an important factor, which we’ll dive into later, made Tom Cruise choose the Kawasaki GPZ900R for Top Gun. In the Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise has been spotted on a Ninja H2R; the fastest Kawasaki to date , and which is heavily influenced by the GPZ900R, which also makes a nostalgic appearance in the film.

The Kawasaki GPZ900R Was Made To Go All-Out

Right off the bat, the Kawasaki GPZ900R used a 908cc 16-valve inline-4 engine with liquid cooling. The GPZ made an astonishing 115 hp at 9,800 rpm! Remember this was in 1985 where numbers like these are rare for race bikes let alone a homologized production bike.

The turbocharged ZX750 (often called the GPZ turbo) , often compared with the GPZ900R, made 112 horsepower but, used a whole different setup entirely. The GPZ900R used a steel frame, 16-inch front, and 18-inch rear wheels, air suspension, and an anti-dive fork as part of its chassis along with using the engine as a stressed member.

Importantly though, Kawasaki positioned the engine lower in the frame, allowing it to maintain a lower center of mass, and enabling blistering levels of performance. The Kawasaki GPZ900R can do the standing quarter-mile in under 11 seconds - 10.976 to be precise! It’s an astonishing feat for a production bike with license plates to achieve such levels of performance during the 1980s.

Despite its tire-shredding performance, the GPZ was a comfortable urban bike, owing to the new suspension and a crankshaft counter-balancer that eliminated secondary vibration. Along with this, the cleverly designed aerodynamic fairing along with the comfortable riding position meant the Kawasaki GPZ was a good companion for long-distance rides.

A Lot Of Firsts Were Seen In The Kawasaki GPZ900R

Being the grandfather of modern-day superbikes, the GPZ brought in a lot of industry firsts. For starters, the Kawasaki GPZ900R was the world’s first production motorcycle to cross the 150-mph mark. With a top speed of 155 mph, Maverick had no doubts as to which bike he’ll be riding in Top Gun, especially when he is more accustomed to flying supersonic fighter jets .

In addition to this, the GPZ was the first production bike to feature liquid-cooling and 4-valves per cylinder with an overhead valve design. The list doesn’t end there, the GPZ is the first bike to introduce a variable damping system that was used in the forks and marketed as anti-dive forks. The GPZ900R also had an aircraft-inspired flush-fitted, spring-mounted fuel cap that replaced the bulky, twist cap. To top it off, the GPZ900R was the very first Kawasaki motorcycle to rock the Ninja badge. The GPZ900R was certainly one of the most exciting motorcycles on the planet during the era of the first Top Gun movie, and that is why it made its way to the silver-screen. It also touched the hearts of many young motorcycle enthusiasts, and has certainly been a huge influence for young people all across the world.

Motorcycle Monday: Tom Cruise Bike Collection

Steven Symes

The man certainly likes to collect motorcycles…

By all accounts, Tom Cruise is the real deal when it comes to motorcycles. The man has performed quite a few motorcycle stunts in his movies himself, starting early in his career, proving he really can ride with the best of them. With such experience, you would expect the actor has quite the motorcycle collection . Fortunately, what he has stashed in his garage definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Check out the Motorious Podcast here .

BMW S1000 RR

tom cruise motorcycle

As you’re about to see, Tom Cruise has a real thing for sport bikes as well as motorcycles he’s ridden in movies. Yes, this is the BMW you see him riding in Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation . And yes, the man bought one of his own after helping produce the best commercial for BMW Motorrad ever.

Vyrus 987 C3 4V

tom cruise motorcycle

Remember when Tom Cruise made the media go ape after he sped away on a motorcycle at his 51st birthday bash? Well, this is the bike he rode out on, causing much controversy. It was the most powerful production motorcycle at the time and with production limited to just 25 units, the bike is very exclusive. Reportedly, Cruise paid a cool $103,000 and some change to own this masterpiece.

Kawasaki GPZ900R

tom cruise motorcycle

Yes, this is the motorcycle Tom Cruise rode in the 1986 blockbuster movie Top Gun . It allowed the actor to show off his skills on two wheels, something he’s done in many other movies since. He apparently liked the Kawasaki enough he snatched one up to add to his growing collection.

Triumph Speed Triple

tom cruise motorcycle

Ridden by Cruise in Mission: Impossible II , many people lusted after the Triumph Speed Triple and its comfortable saddle paired with classic looks. That was apparently enough to make the actor a proud new owner of one himself.

Triumph Bonneville

tom cruise motorcycle

Built specifically for the movie Mission: Impossible III , this unique British scrambler captivated the imaginations of many. After filming concluded, it famously went to the auction block, only to be snatched up by Tom Cruise for almost $30,000.

Honda CRF450X

tom cruise motorcycle

Not everything in Cruise’s stable is a sport bike, like this Honda. However, this is another movie ride, one he used while making Oblivion , although you wouldn’t recognize it since the motorcycle was wearing a futuristic skin to change its appearance. Apparently, Cruise had a lot to say about how the bike should function while shooting the movie. After filming was over, one of the movie motorcycles was given to the actor as a birthday present.

Ducati 999R

tom cruise motorcycle

Plenty of people would like to get their hands on a Ducati 999R, but considering the Italians only made 200 units, you’d have to pay a hefty sum once you did find one available for purchase. The superbike is definitely impressive, the liquid-cooled 999cc four-stroke twin cylinder engine pushing out 139-horsepower and 79 lb.-ft. of torque to rocket you forward with ferocity.

Ducati Desmosedici RR

tom cruise motorcycle

There were only 1500 of these motorcycles made, which are the street-legal version of the bike ridden by Capirossi at Catalyunya GP back in 2003, so this is yet another rare model in Tom Cruise’s collection. He most certainly enjoys the hard-hitting 989cc engine, supplying 200-hp for loads of pulse-pounding fun.

Confederate Hellcat

tom cruise motorcycle

The boutique motorcycle builder Confederate Motors has won over Tom Cruise (as well as a few other celebrities) who owns a Hellcat. He showed off the wild ride when he rode in for the premier of Mission Impossible 3, getting a lot of people talking at the time.

BMW R nineT

tom cruise motorcycle

You might recognize this motorcycle from Mission Impossible: Fallout . This BMW is also the bike Tom Cruise crashed while filming. It’s been said the actor is incredibly good at riding, so good he could be a professional stuntman, but even experienced riders can make mistakes and crash. However, the accident wasn’t so bad to leave the actor or bike in bad shape, and eventually Cruise added the motorcycle to his impressive collection.

A Look at the Motorcycles in ‘Top Gun: Maverick (2022)’

The Indomitable Kawasaki Ninja GPZ 900R and H2 Carbon

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

Who wears aviators, races fighter jets on a carbon piece of bonkers, and is partially responsible for banking an eye-popping $124 million in ticket sales this past weekend ?

If you guessed an adrenaline-charged US navy pilot named Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise) from the recent blockbuster banger ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ you’d be right on the money.

The movie is spiking theatre attendance across the country – and given the $11,374/hour cost to fly the iconic handful of aggressor aircraft , we’re thinking stratospheric success balances the whole checkbook out…more or less.

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

Purring in wait next to the lineup of snappy jets (and gulping down significantly less fossil fuel) are the ‘Top Gun’ franchise’s supersport scoots of choice ; the indomitable carbon-clad 2022 Kawasaki H2 and original household name, the Ninja GPZ 900R.

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

“A total of four supercharged Ninja H2 Carbon machines and two restored Ninja GPZ 900R motorcycles were provided to the Top Gun: Maverick production team,” states a report in AutoWeek .

Hot Cars tells us that the 900R logged 115 hp @ 9800 rpm and boasted “a steel frame, 16-inch front, and 18-inch rear wheels, air suspension, and an anti-dive fork as part of its chassis along with using the engine as a stressed member.”

This added to the fact that the Ninja 900R  uses the engine as a stressed member (rare for the time), with the neat addition of an aircraft-style fuel cap to replace the usual twisting unit.

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

Other cool facts include the reality that the Ninja GPZ 900R was the first Ninja of its time – certainly the first ever used on a major film – and took the podium as 1986’s fastest motorcycle in the world.

(We should clarify that first place was NOT given to the 900R for the entirety of 1986; with the Ninja boasting a top speed record of 151–158 mph (243–254 km/h) as of 1984 and the Suzuki GSX-R 1100 clocking in 160 mph (257 km/h) as of 1986 itself, Wikipedia states the gixxer wins out, though it’s likely the Ninja held the crown for at least the beginning portion of 1986).

So how badass is the Ninja GPZ 900R?

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

As stated by WinnipegSun , the first Ninja GPZ 900R was “developed over six years in secret, became an instantaneous race-winning success (Isle of Man TT), and put down numbers that would shame most modern performance cars even today.”

Kawi’s OG Ninja, brought back for another round of our fangirling – and who better to be lounging next to the 900R in all her lean, muscled hyper-glory than the present-day queen of the supercharged screamers (and the replacement for the iconic jet-racing scene), the 2022 Ninja H2 Carbon.

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

Sporting an ultra-lightweight carbon fairing set, the $32,500 H2 holds a 228hp inline-four package galloping to the record tune of 226.9mph, according to CycleWorld .

She’s equal parts beast and beauty, with TopSpeed noting that our most recent national landspeed record of 226.5mph (362.5kmph) – with a two-way average speed of 222mph (358.4km/h) – is all thanks to H2’s sibling, the supersonic H2R .

In short, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ doesn’t just sport the dynamic duo of the decade. As a film, it’s a show-stopping homage to our childhood, with the more left-brained results turning in a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A+” CinemaScore .

“[It was] fantastic to see Tom Cruise back in the skies again after 36 years,” said Becca Monahan, commercial director of the Official Charts Company in a report from BBC .

“That the original Top Gun has made history by getting to number one on the Official Film Chart and that many of those sales were digital downloads is a great achievement.”

As for a behind-the-scenes tidbit….we got our hands on a good one just for you.

A view of the machines and characters used for TopGun's recent flick, Top Gun: Maverick

“Usually, the Navy forbids pilots from flying below 200 feet during training,”  states the NY Times .

“One of the film’s most staggering images is of Cruise in an F-18 whooshing just 50 feet above the ground, a height roughly equal to its wingspan.”

“The plane flew so close to the earth that it kicked up dust and made the ground cameras shake. The pilot landed, turned to Cruise, and told the superstar that he’d never do that again.”

I like the looks of the modified tail section on the 900. I just hope a bunch of squids dont go buy the H2 and crash their brains out after seeing the movie.

What brains?

In one of the final scenes of the movie, I spotted a blue 1972 H2 – 750cc 3 cylinder 2 stroke, the mighty Mach IV! Awesome to see all the motorcycles! Loved the movie! Probably one of the best sequels ever.

Happy to see someone sharing my opinion on this particular topic.

Cheers, Amanda Quick

The most impressive, but easy-to-miss, motorcycle detail of the movie was in the last scene back in the hangar at Mojave, where you see out-of-focus in the background, a 1972 Kawasaki 750 triple H2. That was the king-hell bike of its era.

Truly the fastest, lightest speed demon of her time…

Cut it out, the hooner in me is drooling again.

The first Ninja, the GPz900 debuted in 1984. That’s when I got mine. The one in the first Top Gun was an ‘85 model, identical to the ‘84 except for the black/red color scheme vs. the original ‘84 model’s gray/red.

It was the king of production superbikes that year, without a doubt. It was a game-changer. The year before (‘83) it was the Kawasaki 750 Turbo (also owned that one), and before that the Honda Magna, (a bike I called a “disco bike” because of its cruiser styling). The Ninja was much more practical than the 750 Turbo — the turbo’s power would lag badly up until about 6,000 rpm, and if you were below that in a turn and twisted the throttle you’d get a big surge that would break the rear tire loose, if you weren’t very careful.

The new H2 has very impressive power but is about 50 pounds too heavy — it’s more like a Suzuki Hayabusa, awesome acceleration, but sooner or later you have to turn or stop, and it gets awkward. Not really a track bike. I think a normally-aspirated Ducati Panigale would be better suited for the track.

https://www.mecum.com/lots/PM0815-220214/1984-kawasaki-ninja-900/

I spotted the 1972 H2 as well. My other half smacked me when blurted out loud “look at the effing Blue H2” while in the theatre. I bought my 1972 H2 well used in 1985 for $600. It has been redone a couple times over the years. Taking the old girl out for spin shortly.

Spin away, I’m jelly as hell…though not of the smack 😉

Maybe if the movie leads to the Green Team making a cajillion dollars selling bikes to Maverick wannabes, Kawasaki will jump back into MotoGP now that Suzuki is calling it quits.

Ha! Wouldn’t that be the icing on the cake.

Hard to tell, but next to the blue H-2 on the left looks like a 1969 H-1 500 (white with the blue streak)

Saw a smurf blue Honda CB-1 400 naked in the mojave hangar beginning of the movie

5-Ultra Rare Motorcycles That Tom Cruise Has In His Collection

The Hollywood superstar has a thing for bikes and it goes beyond the silver screen. Here are five incredible two-wheeled exotics that he owns

Tom Cruise, 60, is a name that really needs no introduction. With, the Hollywood superstar's movies having grossed more than $10.1 billion globally and a current net worth of over $600 million, it goes without saying that Tom Cruise like so many celebrities who love bikes ; has a garage filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of limited-edition, record-breaking jewels that should leave you in no doubt about him being one of the highest-paid actors around. From Maverick in Top Gun to Ethan in Mission Impossible, we love the man as he loves to perform his own stunts on screen, but did you know that the man also enjoys the same action-packed lifestyle in the real world as well? His impressive collection of vehicles - which even includes the priciest production motorcycle in the world - should unquestionably prove that. While the cover of this feature has Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on a Honda Valkyrie Rune, it is unlcear if he owns it. In this post, we'll dig a little deeper into five of the rarest motorcycles in his collection. RELATED: Does Tom Cruise make the Ducati Desmosedici look better?

5 Kawasaki GPZ900R

Since Top Gun was the movie that basically helped Cruise's career to take off in a big way, it only makes sense that he would hold the iconic Kawasaki GPZ900R, featured in the film. In the 1986 classic, Cruise used the bike extensively to show off his biker attitude and skills, aside from being a daring fighter pilot that is. In the 2022 sequel 'Maverick', the GPZ900R (also remembered as the Ninja GPZ900) was replaced by the Kawasaki Ninja H2R , but Cruise was apparently impressed enough by the original to purchase a model for his personal collection.

With a top speed of 248 kmph, the middleweight motorcycle's most innovative feature was its engine: for the first time in history , a production motorcycle was fitted with a liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder with a 16-valve cylinder head. The GPZ had a cubic capacity of 908cc and delivered a high power output of 115 horsepower . It also had a new timing system, bringing the chain from the usual central part of the cylinder block to the left side of it (not needing cooling fins), a peculiarity that achieved a narrower engine on one hand and easier maintenance on the other. Today we can confidently say that its revolutionary design directly inspired the modern sportbike.

4 Ducati 999R

Ducati is a world-famous Italian motorcycle manufacturer that has been in business since the 1950s. It is a well-known brand with an enviable reputation for producing sleek, high-performance machines. The Ducati 999R was introduced as a limited edition model in 2003 - o nly 200 exist in the world . One of them has made its way into Tom Cruise's collection, and it is said to be a beauty. In the case of the 999R, the Italian brand was looking for a competitive bike for the World SBK, so they created one which was 25 pounds lighter and had 20 horsepower more than its younger sister - the 999S.

Both the S and the R had titanium connecting rods and cup-shaped crankcases to avoid problems with lack of oil pressure in extreme conditions, with the S fused at high pressure and the R fused at low pressure in a sand mold. The R is considered one of the most powerful motorcycles ever produced , powered by the super advanced Testastretta engine and equipped with a 6-speed gearbox; t he top speed is an astounding 179 miles per hour . For his 46th birthday, Cruise got a gray version of the machine.

3 Triumph Bonneville Scrambler

The Triumph Bonneville Scrambler MI3 was built specifically for Mission Impossible III . Triumph's design brief called for emulating the vintage design of the late 1960s model while utilizing the greatest contemporary technology in the engine, transmission, and running gear. The motor unit had to be an air-cooled parallel twin with a 360-degree crankshaft in order to replicate the sound and feel of the original , and applying identical standards to the cycling parts required wire-spoked wheels and a twin-shock rear end.

The new eight-valve engine - which had an initial displacement of 790cc - was larger than any previous Bonneville; additionally, while the original model could also have used a balancer shaft, in this Triumph was felt absolutely necessary to reduce vibration caused by the old engine configuration. Once filming was over, it headed to auction, where the eventual buyer was none other than Cruise himself . By all accounts, Cruise spent $29,250 for his new ride.

2 Confederate Hellcat

While Confederate Motors may be a small operation with a limited reach, it clearly knows how to attract attention, not to mention celebrities: for one, in addition to Cruise, Brad Pitt is in fact also said to be a big fan. It was Cruise's Confederate Hellcat that got everyone moving when he made his dramatic entrance to the premiere of "Mission Impossible 3" on the back of a motorcycle.

The machine is a sight to behold with its one-of-a-kind and revolutionary design . It is packed with more technology and engineering than you think possible, and is described as an " all-American motorcycle ." This motorcycle was built to impress, with its 2.2-liter engine and a top speed of 121 mph. It is also credited as one of the most reliable motorcycles ever made , which may explain its $65,000 price tag.

1 Vyrus 987 C3 4V

Finally, if we're looking into Tom Cruise's motorcycle collection, we can't forget the frankly bonkers and weird Vyrus 987 C3 4V. This bike - designed by Ascanio Rodorigo - aesthetically has a strong resemblance to its predecessors, but it definitely stands out for the innovations in its steering system, which increase the performance and safety of the front axle. In addition, to aid riding, the bike is equipped with a data acquisition system that acts as a control unit and detects the rider's riding ability, adapting the engine as necessary to make riding easier.

There's no denying that this is a beast of a bike, with a 1.2-liter engine and a top speed of 209 mph. Despite its power, it is still incredibly light and easy to handle, weighing only 154 kg - possibly making it one of the lightest bikes available of its kind . The motorcycle made its debut at Cruise's 51st birthday party at the Chateau Marmont Hotel, where its quick start made headlines. The Vyrus 987 (which, by the way, is the world's most powerful production motorcycle ) is worth an astronomical $103,769, making it also one the most expensive motorcycle in the world.
