Glass Animals is an indie rock band from Oxford, UK. Its music is a highly eclectic blend of different sounds, which include pop, rock, and psychedelic music. Glass Animals’ unique sound continues to garner new fans, as well as coveted gigs with well-known musicians.

The band has played numerous headlining gigs as well as opened up for such artists as St. Vincent, Metronomy, and Yeasayer.

The band is a collaboration between four childhood friends: frontman/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dave Bayley, guitarist and keyboardist Drew MacFarlane, bassist and keyboardistEdmund Irwin-Singer, and drummer Joe Seaward. Bayley was raised in the United States but returned to his native England at age 13, where he was enrolled at St. Edward’s School in Oxford on a music scholarship. This is where he met MacFarlane, who was also raised in the US, as well as Irwin-Singer and Seaward. The group was still in school when it released its debut EP, Leaflings, in 2012.

After the release of its EP, Glass toured around England playing some small clubs and would later release its self-titled EP in 2013. Glass Animals conveyed the band’s eccentric style of music, including its catchy mannerisms.

Glass Animals is heavily influenced by both psychedelic music and the study of biology, and both of these concepts are present throughout its albums. Their self-titled EP contains the track “Psylla,” which is a reference to a sap-sucking insect. The track also contains psychedelic elements like heavy reverb, delay, and breathy vocals. The song “Woozy” is also presented on the EP, which has a trip-hop vibe as well as including a guest appearance by Jean Deaux, who raps a verse in the song.

The band soon caught the attention of high-profile producer Paul Epworth, who has worked with such artists such as Adele, Coldplay, Paul McCartney, and Bruno Mars. Epworth signed the band to his label Wolf Tone. With his support, Glass Animals released its debut album, Zaba, which was highly influenced by William Steig’s children’s book The Zabajaba Jungle.

The songs on Zaba feature tribal drum patterns as well as sounds of nature, which were captured by lead singer David Bayley recording ambient sounds in outdoor settings. Critics have praised Zaba for its unique blend of electronica and R&B music that is presented in a minimalistic way. Critics have also commented that the album resembles the sounds of Jamie xx and Flying Lotus. The album did extremely well on the Australian music charts and contained the singles “Black Mambo,” “Gooey,” “Pools,” and “Hazey.”

In 2014 and 2015 the band made major moves, performing “Gooey” on both The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Seth Meyers. It toured both hemispheres of the globe and performed over 130 concerts in 2015, including sold-out performances at The Wiltern in Los Angeles and Terminal 5 in New York City. In the midst of this, they also released a collaboration called “Lose Control” with rapper Joey Bada$$.

The next year was no less eventful. In May, Glass Animals dropped the single “Life Itself” in anticipation of its upcoming second full-length album, How to Be a Human Being. The single rose to number 14 on the US Billboard Alternative Song chart and spent half a year on Sirius XM’s Alt-18 chart. The accompanying music video came out in June 2016. The second single, “Youth,” was released on July 25. It also saw immediate success and made it into the FIFA 17 by EA Sports. “Season 2 Episode 3,” the third single, came out on August 22, four days before the album came out.

The album How to Be a Human Being was inspired by people Bayley met while on tour. Each song explored a different person’s life, resulting in fascinating insights into other people’s experiences. For instance, “Season 2 Episode 3” told the story of a woman who “spends her entire time watching TV, lounging around, not doing anything, being high, eating mayonnaise from a jar.”

In 2018, while preparing for yet another tour, drummer Joe Seaward was hit by a truck during a bike ride in Dublin. Facing serious injuries, he and the band decided to cancel the rest of 2018’s tour dates.

Two singles for its next album came out in November 2019 and February 2020: “Tokyo Drifting” (with Denzel Curry) and “Your Love (Déjà Vu).” The next single, “Dreamland,” came out in May 2020 and was accompanied by an official announcement of the upcoming album’s release on July 10.

“Dreamland” came out during Seaward’s long hospitalization after his accident. While Bayley was sitting by his bedside, he began to write down memories, which turned into a nostalgic album, also called Dreamland. It contained material related to Bayley’s childhood and other pivotal moments throughout his life.

Though Dreamland was scheduled for release in July 2020, in late June, the band delayed its release to “keep focus on the Black Lives Matter movement and the discussions taking place around racism and police brutality around the world.” Glass Animals instead released it in August. The band also launched a website where fans could interact with the album — downloading samples of the songs, inspecting artwork, and learning more about the album’s content. Bayley explained that the goal was “to make something that was incredibly honest and incredibly us.” Dreamland debuted at number two in the UK Albums Chart.

In January 2021, “Heat Waves” hit the number one spot on Australia’s Triple J Hottest 100 of 2020. “Tangerine” and “Your Love (Déjà Vu)” also made the chart. Other singles from the album continued to climb the charts well into 2022.

Live reviews

Proudly touting one of the year's strongest debut records, Oxford's Glass Animals are on course to be an unrivalled quartet of dominating figures in the immediate future. Their first LP, ZABA, is a gorgeous commingling of syrupy gloop-splattered synths, Yellow Fever funk guitar, alt-J-esque falsetto harmonies and rampant beats that sound like a jungle stampede. They spin an addictive and hugely unique style of music, and though it's achingly familiar, there's never any anchoring point – a rare treat in today's sonic landscape. There's a delirious opiate aura as their blur the borders of R&B, rock, pop, electronica and soul, and don't be surprised if you're sucked into an anachronistic tornado, and promptly blurted into a surreal(er) land of Oz.

It's an ambitious set of tracks to transfer into live scenarios, but, even in their relatively early days, they've fine-tuned and sharpened an array of sandblasted efforts. Their shows are littered with fan favourites: “Gooey”, “Cocoa Hooves” (sans slugs), “Flip”, “Walla Walla” and a delightfully warped cover of Kanye West's “Love Lockdown”, so expect the immaculately-coiffed lads to dazzle on every front. Even if you're not familiar with the band, it's well worth taking a gamble and watching them live; as much as it's an impressive performance, it's an experience that'll melt the innards of your cranium.

Wow! What a talented and likable group of guys who put on one of the best shows I've seen in awhile. Having only released two albums so far, Glass Animals certainly have to put some lesser-known songs into their setlist. But here's the thing: they truly don't have a bad song. Each track has a different sound and a different story to tell. The show started with the jumpy and rhythmic "Life Itself," but was immediately followed by the deliciously slow and smooth jams "Black Mambo" and "Hazey." Other standouts included "Poplar St," a slow burn with a killer guitar line, "Season 2 Episode 3," a techno-infused song complete with video game noises and quirky lyrics ("My girl eats mayonnaise/From a jar when she's gettin' blazed), and "Youth," a cheerful crowd-pleaser. Of course, "Gooey," the lads' most famous hit, brought the house down and a solid encore finished off the show. I think I was most impressed with the performance aspect of the concert. The strobe lights and the energy of the band really made the most of the NorVa's small space. And, oh yeah, a giant pineapple disco ball doesn't hurt.

Been wanting to watch this band since their inception. Finally got the perfect opportunity with the grand opening of the roxy, a new venue right in front of the brand new braves stadium!

their act is visceral and mind bending at times. They started out strong with their latest single with their latest single "life itself". This showed how skillful they've become with their live act and how they've developed over time. One of the coolest set features was how in sync the lighting effects were with the act especially the light reflections that came from a huge pineapple disco ball that hung above the stage.

Highlight of the show was undoubtedly their ability to break off into solos and improve each song. Usually when I think of glass animals I think calm and soothing sounds but this show was the opposite. Just imagine their songs on steroids. Amazing show to say the least and I can not wait to watch they live again!

If you're reading this, you're likely already a fan of their music. Well after seeing them live, I'm a bigger fan. The lead singer was so enthusiastic and looked like he was having a blast and when the crowd showed the band love, he was humble and endearing and played even harder. His energy was infectious and the whole room just seemed really stoked to be there as was I. They are really fun and if I had any complaint, it was that they didn't play long enough. Also, might I add that it is SO refreshing to hear an indie band PLAY INSTRUMENTS and not just a keyboard synth while acting like it was re-inventing the wheel. I like those bands too but what a breath of fresh air. Instruments. And real drums. Every one of them was just fantastic. I am so glad I got to experience this and will again the next chance I get.

So this is a band I've been into for a while now and yet to see. Since hearing this record earlier this year when it came out, I've definitely been wanting to see them live, and it was definitely worth the wait. We were greeted by the sight of a veritable forest of large potted plants around the stage, creating a surreal yet playful atmosphere, hinting at the kind of people these guys are, who created one of the most intriguing albums to come out this year. From the minute they hit the stage they had the entire audience enthralled. Running through most of the tracks off their first full length album "Zaba" with enthusiasm and energy, standout tracks "Gooey" and "Hazey" and the tribal "Wyrd" got the crowd moving! They definitely sounded like a band that are destined for great things. Definitely ones to watch!

It was great, it started with super chill band from Colombia that were super cool and had some really unique influences. But then shit hit the fan. Another band came out... Little Dragon. A Swedish band that would sound good if they just turned off the singers mic and took it easy on the bass. The singer couldn't sing and it felt like their set would never end. It was weird and you couldn't understand a word she said. But enough about that malarky. Glass Animals my god it was fantastic. Every song was so good, they changed tempo or put in solos to the songs and it was so enjoyable. The lights where perfect and fit the songs lyrics so well. I honestly can not say enough good things about the show. 10/10 would see Glass Animals again

these guys BROUGHT IT. it was not a great night weather-wise - torrential downpour, flash flooding, and an hour's delay after they had only played a few songs. but more than half the crowd at red rocks stuck it out through the very damp night. once they took the stage again they were ready to rock - very high energy, dave was clearly having a blast. he told the crowd that we had a "british music festival" vibe, and i took it as a compliment. great set list, mostly from "how to be a human being," but a few from "zaba" thrown into the mix. would definitely love to see these guys perform again.

Seeing Glass Animals live is a truly amazing experience. There was such a relaxed atmosphere at their show as each song blended with another. Their music is so infectious and that showed by the audience's reaction, with most of the room swaying to frontman Dave's vocals and the dripping beats that makes their music so unique. Dave performed without shoes, in wooly socks, so that gives you an idea of how relaxed the band is! I will definitely be wanting to see them again in 2016, eagerly anticipating their 2nd album!

I go to a lot of small venue shoes. I lived in NYC for 8 years and went to a TON of shows as well as travel in the summer for gigs. I had never seen Glass Animals before last night and was STUNNED.

Blown. Away.

They were amazing. The energy of the crowd who knew all the lyrics helped but they were just incredible. The show was short because they only have 1 full length album but I will JUMP at the opportunity to see these guys again. Thank you for not only producing great music but putting on an entertaining live show.

The Glass Animals was the headline band for Buzz Under the Stars Night 1. The show was incredibly put together with dazzling lights, perfect stage presence and, of course, amazing music. Dave Bayley looked as if he loved what he was doing the entire show; interacting with the audience, dancing, introducing songs and his band members. The audience itself was enthralled with the entire show from start to finish. It was an all around spiritual experience and I would undoubtedly recommend the Glass Animals for years to come.

The shows add to their already sold-out UK tour dates, previously announced Red Rocks shows and confirmed festival performances at Bonnaroo, Life Is Beautiful, and Outside Lands. The band comes to Chicago on Friday, March 18, 2022 for a concert at the Credit Union 1 Arena (formerly known at the UIC Pavilion). Show time is 8:00 pm.

Fans can purchase tickets ($65.50/$55.50/$45.50/$35.50) on Thursday, May 6 at 10:00 am via Ticketmaster.com.

In addition, last week the band was selected as 2021 Billboard Music Awards finalists for Top Rock Song “Heat Waves” and Top Rock Album Dreamland. This is the first time the band has been recognized by the BBMAs. The Billboard Music Awards LIVE will take place Sunday, May 23 on NBC.

Earlier this month, Glass Animals performed “Heat Waves” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where the band took over Margate’s Dreamland Theme Park and brought it back to life with an electrifying performance—watch HERE . In addition, they performed on The Ellen Degeneres Show where they took over a skate rink and used fan submitted footage to fill the television screens behind their performance—watch HERE.

“ Heat Waves ” is taken from Glass Animals’ critically acclaimed third album Dreamland released last summer and this week was certified Platinum in the US. Neary a year since its release, the song continues to grow globally across streaming platforms and on radio charts. Amassing over 450 million global streams to date , “Heat Waves” peaked at #1 on the Alternative Radio Chart for 3 consecutive weeks , a first for Glass Animals in their career. The track currently sits in the Top 20 on the Top 40 Radio Chart and is making similar moves at Hot AC and AAA. “Heat Waves” held the #1 spot on the ARIA Official Singles Chart in Australia for six consecutive weeks , marking the band’s first #1 single globally and in their release history. Last week, it hit a new peak on Spotify’s Global Top 50 Chart at #25 . With over 2.5 million global adjusted single sales , the song has amassed 2 million daily streams and received 16 million views of the video on YouTube. Glass Animals recently hit a new Spotify monthly listener peak of 17.2 million , surpassing the likes of Tame Impala, Gorillaz, The 1975 and The Strokes.

Since its initial release last June, “Heat Waves” has experienced a global rise in support. Having originally resonated with Glass Animals fans, word quickly spread, and the track started getting healthy traction at radio globally. Next came a sync placement on FIFA , which opened up a whole new audience and helped the track begin to climb charts all over the world. “Heat Waves” most notably was then crowned number 1 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 – an accolade not given to a UK band since 2009 with previous winners including Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish. A third surge in attention came more recently with an organic Minecraft affiliation, whereby the YouTuber LoverFella (2.3M subscribers) rebuilt a Glass Animals fan’s base and surprised her with a meet and greet with the band who were waiting inside. Watch it  HERE and the Extended BTS HERE . Dave Bayley recently sat down to chat about the track’s creation with Hrishikesh Hirway  on the coveted Song Exploder Podcast . Listen to the interview HERE .

Glass Animals’ album Dreamland entered UK charts on its opening week at #2 (their highest ever scoring chart position, a massive 21 spots above their last album, Mercury Prize nominated How To Be A Human Being ) and charted inside the top 10 in the US, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The album clocked up 160 million streams in its first week of release.

Glass Animals wields more than just heat waves – they’ve harnessed a tsunami of zeal.

Performing Saturday at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, British psychedelic pop band Glass Animals rocked the iconic venue with enough bravado to wake the dead. Surrounded by silhouetted palm trees backlit by a dusky sunset, the group’s electric performance and the clamoring crowd stood in rather comical contrast to the slumbering graves nearby. Nonetheless, the concert crackled with vivacity, thanks to a standout performance from frontman Dave Bayley and phenomenal visual aesthetics.

Though unassuming at first glance, the band’s stage setup cleverly brought to life the album cover of their latest record, “Dreamland.” All set pieces were an identical pastel purple, with replicas of the album art’s diving board, basketball hoop and pyramid. While this color palette would’ve been monotonous on its own, the humdrum benefited from flashing neon signs hung across the stage that added some zest.

[Related: Rising Artists: Four hot, new artists to brighten up summer soundtracks ]

However, the real star of the setup was the massive faux computer screen that mimicked the outdated 2000s Windows design also found on the band’s website. As the clock ticked down to Glass Animals’ appearance, an archaic popup window counted down and playfully teased the crowd with rapidly fluctuating wait times – some as long as one year – until it finally displayed a gloriously technicolor welcome screen just as the band casually strolled onto stage.

During the performance itself, dazzling lights and short clips exploding with color enhanced the show phenomenally, visualizing the abstract candyland of “Hot Sugar” and the sentimentality of childhood in “Youth.” With enough flashing lights to heed a photosensitive epilepsy warning, they were thankfully effective, timed perfectly to the rhythm of each track and supplementing the extra pizzazz for every beat drop.

But even without the abstract visuals and clever stage setup, the band’s dynamite stage presence alone would have been enough to set the venue ablaze with excitement. Though the group was dressed in rather minimalist streetwear, with basic trousers and the most adventurous top being a cropped jersey, their easy chemistry was clearly palpable from each exhilarating electric guitar duet to every staccato clap-along.

Bayley himself carried the majority of the performance’s effervescence, punctuating his animated singing with dramatic gesticulations and an ever-present waggling tongue. His eclectic dancing – which ranged from spinning around in circles during musical interludes to pounding his chest in sync with beat drops – bounded with energy, largely due to the fact that it felt spontaneously free rather than meticulously choreographed.

While Bayley occasionally seemed out of this world with exuberance, the rest of the band brought a balancing calm that prevented the swell of fervency from crashing to the ground. In particular, bassist Edmund Irwin-Singer grabbed a hold of the spotlight with his sultry bass lines, managing to straddle the line between exuding quiet confidence and bold swagger as he sauntered across the stage.

And despite several fans catcalling Bayley and brashly insisting that he was daddy material, the frontman soldiered on through the heckling with the grace of a veteran performer. But frankly, his decision to ignore unwarranted comments may have led to an unfortunate overall neglect of the audience, as the band rarely spoke directly to their fans during their set. Aside from a few brief introductions of tracks and generic comments about Los Angeles, their music was the sole form of communication.

[Related: Student records rendition of ‘Godspeed’ after cover gains popularity on TikTok ]

Yet in terms of the sonics themselves, the band is one of the lucky few that sounds identical – if not even better – live, as they do in their records. With a set list covering equal portions “Dreamland” and “How To Be A Human Being,” as well as a smidgen of “ZABA,” the group managed to gracefully weave together familiar favorites with new tracks, seamlessly transitioning from the bouncy beat of “Space Ghost Coast To Coast” to the lustful croons of “Take A Slice.”

Plus, with a general admission audience packed tight like sardines, Glass Animals took full advantage of having the crowd at their mercy. Feeding off the buzzing audience by prolonging waits for beat drops and dancing with a pineapple before tossing it into the crowd, the band was expertly adept at recognizing what fans wanted – and teasing them for a bit before granting their wishes at full force.

Concluding the night was a stripped back version of their hit track “Heat Waves,” an encore gift rewarded after several minutes of cheering. Several times throughout, Bayley turned the microphone towards the audience for them to sing while he stood dumbfounded, later remarking that it was the loudest any crowd had sung the song all tour.

And though the singing may have been all so incredibly loud, it was nothing in comparison to the electricity of the night.

Adding to an already incredible year, Glass Animals have announced their North American  “Dreamland Tour.”

The band was recently selected as 2021 Billboard Music Awards finalists for Top Rock Song “Heat Waves” and Top Rock Album  Dreamland.  This is the first time the band has been recognized by the BBMAs.

At the beginning of the third album from London band Glass Animals, frontman Dave Bayley asks himself a series of questions about fundamental issues: identity, memory, love, friendship, the person you have been and the person you want to be. How do you answer so many questions that cut to the heart of who you are? Well, Bayley sings in the very last line, “You go make an album and call it Dreamland.”

“I’ve always hated the idea of writing about myself,” says Bayley, who is Glass Animals’ singer, songwriter and producer. On Dreamland, at last, he throws off that reluctance and takes the plunge. It’s a memoir in the form of a song cycle, inspired by sonic maestros from Brian Wilson to Timbaland, and it holds nothing back.

Dave Bayley, Ed Irwin-Singer (bass), Drew MacFarlane (guitar) and Joe Seaward (drums) released their first album, Zaba, in 2014, on Paul Epworth’s Wolf Tone label. It was a modest debut (“We thought we’d go back to our jobs,” Bayley says) until the stealthily addictive Gooey became a platinum-certified viral streaming hit. They have since notched up over two billion streams, appeared on James Corden and Jimmy Kimmel, and toured the world to strikingly diverse audiences, from Glastonbury to Primavera and Red Rocks to Coachella. “The T-shirts you see in the front row are mad,” says Bayley. “You’ll see a Can T-shirt, a Justin Bieber T-shirt, a Korn T-shirt, a Grateful Dead T-shirt…”

Bayley figured that most bands’ second albums are informed by life on the road, for better or worse, so instead of writing about himself, why not tell the stories of some of the fascinating people they met? Each song on 2016’s Mercury-shortlisted How to Be a Human Being explore a different character until the overwhelming final track, Agnes, when Bayley opened up about losing a friend to suicide.

“I was asking people direct questions,” he explains. “I thought it was a bit unfair to do that to other people and not ask questions of myself. Agnes was me turning the camera on myself at the end of the record.” At first he was unsure if he wanted to release such a painfully revealing song but once the album was out, fans got in touch to tell Bayley how much the song had helped them. “I think people appreciated the honesty…people maybe like seeing that it's ok to be confused” he says. “If being open can do that, then you have to do it.”

“I think part of the reason Dave created these strange worlds and characters is because he had stories that were worth telling but he didn’t have another vehicle to express them,” says Joe Seaward. “They were heavily disguised to the outside world. Agnes was the beginning of a change. When we were recording it none of us spoke about it, even though we all knew what it was about. It was a really moving, difficult thing for us to do and Dreamland feels like an extension of that. Now he can tell these stories as Dave and own them.”

Around the same time, Bayley started writing and producing for other artists, including Joey Bada$$, Flume, 6lack, Wale, Khalid and, on last year’s Tokyo Drifting, Denzel Curry. “I was learning how other people wrote about themselves and seeing that it’s OK,” he says. Having avoided autobiography for so long, he decided to go all in. “The idea of Dreamland is to go from my first memory up until now, through all the big realisations that happen in life. It's about the things that happened and the people that surrounded me in that time, good things, bad things, horrific things, funny things, confusing things, bits where I hated myself, bits where I hated other people, first loves, discovering sexuality, sadness, abandonment, mental health. It’s just painting pictures of those moments and times that, looking back, make you who you are.”

Many of those memories are American. Dave’s Welsh father and Israeli mother met in New York and moved out to start a family, so he spent the first seven years of his life in Massachusetts and the next seven in Texas, before moving to the UK at the age of 14. “I had a really weird accent,” he says, sounding very English. “America is where my roots are. It has all the things I grew up with.”

Bayley’s first musical memory is his dad playing Pet Sounds so he nods to Brian Wilson in the chiming motif of Dreamland 2020. Like a movie trailer, the track includes references to every other song on the album, both lyrical and musical. “Those chords are asking questions, so they repeat throughout the album in hidden ways,” he says. His mum’s influence is even more apparent: sampled from old home movies, her voice recurs throughout Dreamland.

Two songs tell unsettling stories from Bayley’s time in Texas. “I see the bruise/ I see the truth/ I see what he’s been doing to you,” he sings on the anguished R&B of Domestic Bliss (Hawaii), remembering a child’s first encounter with violence. “Even at that young age you know something horrific is going on,” he says. Space Ghost (Coast to Coast) uses a gangsta rap homage to bring to life a youthful friendship gone wrong. If you’re singing about listening to Dr Dre, who better to mix it than Dre protégé Derek “MixedbyAli” Ali? Similarly, Your Love’s conflicted booty call pays tribute to the formative influence of Timbaland and the Neptunes. “I was obsessed with those sounds,” Bayley says. “In Texas it was either that or country music.”

Childhood memories segue into the traps and conundrums of adult relationships. The sun-dazed Dirty South soul of Hot Sugar describes the familiar error of meeting a charismatic maverick and confusing awe with love: “I don’t want to be around you/ I just want to be like you.” The indelibly catchy Heat Wave (“my version of a pop song about love but it’s a bit fucked”) nails the realisation that you’ve sacrificed your personality to the character your partner wants you to be. On Waterfalls’ playful falsetto hip hop, Bayley pokes fun at the ridiculous things he says to impress a new partner: “You hear words coming out of your mouth and think, ‘That’s not me,’ but you do it anyway.”

As you can tell by now, Bayley doesn’t let himself get off lightly. He realised that he couldn’t write personal songs unless he was fully honest about his flaws and follies. “I blame myself for a lot of things,” he says. “I’m a Jew, I think we do that. But you’re going to fuck up. There isn’t a solution to everything.”

The gathering storm of It’s All So Incredibly Loud expresses the dreadful pause after you tell someone something that you know will hurt them. “That song is all about three seconds,” he says. “In a way that silence was the loudest thing I’ve ever heard.” The luminescent closing track Helium (White Pyramids) is Bayley’s final reckoning with guilt, its final moments looping the listener right back to the start of the album. “We’ve all done shit that we really regret,” he says, summing up Dreamland’s spirit of confession and catharsis. “You have to forgive yourself.”

The album emerged from a traumatic period for Glass Animals. In July 2018, Joe Seaward was knocked off his bicycle by a van in Dublin, breaking a femur and fracturing his skull. For the first week, he says, “I couldn’t speak and I couldn’t remember anything: what happened, who was there, how much pain I was in. It’s a black hole. I had neurosurgery and woke up with staples in my head.”

“That was a scary moment,” says Bayley. “I’d lost my best friend and I thought I was going to lose another one. I did a couple of years at medical school so I knew it could go either way.”

As Seaward gradually recovered, he was able to participate in the recording of Dreamland and played his first show since the accident in Oxford last November. “All of the friends and family who had wondered whether or not that would ever happen again were able to share that night with us.”

Recorded in London in 2019, Dreamland was produced by Bayley and mixed by David Wrench, Manny Maroquin and MixedbyAli, with invaluable advice from executive producer Paul Epworth. Glass Animals’ most enthralling album to date, it’s a pop record of rare scope, vision and emotional depth. So the discomfort of autobiographical songwriting was worth it, then?

“I’m still quite self-conscious about it,” Bayley admits with a smile, “but it’s done now.”

He went and made an album and he called it Dreamland.

CONCERT REVIEW: GLASS ANIMALS Made Giant Waves During Nashville Tour Stop (July 28th, 2022)

glass animals band tour

English-American based indie rock extraordinaire Glass Animals brought their “Dreamland” tour promoting their third full-length album to Nashville, TN on July 28th. The tour kicked off August 30th in Lewiston, NY, and has the last date posted for September 10th in Madrid, Spain.

It was the perfect day to stay home and ditch work. It rained overnight and all morning long. The sky was gray with faint touches of white. I had requested photo access to Glass Animal three weeks prior and realized with only a few hours until the start of the show that my request was probably not getting approved. Disappointed, I told my boss I’d work extra hours to cover my coworkers who’d rather stay home and watch TV! It was 3:30 when I got the approval and needed to think of something quick to get out of my obligations. When Glass Animals calls, you gotta accept the charges.

An open-air venue was the perfect place for this show. The weather was wonderful considering it’s Nashville in July. The night began with Ghanaian-Australian Genesis Owusu . When I walked into the photo pit I was transported, if only momentarily, to the fruit markets in Kingston, Jamaica. The sweet smell of ripe fruit mingled with burning “grass.” I took a deep breath and, as if in a dream, the stage was swarmed by a group of dancers all wearing black and red.

Owusu ‘s swagger is magnificent, his voice is deep and smooth. I first thought he was a rapper, but his set crosses many genres. Yes, you can hear the rapid rhymes expected from rap. But funk, rock and jazz are all evident as well. Owusu is not only a singer, he is also a dancer, poet, actor and visual artist. You can see how he uses all these diverse art forms on stage to give the crowd an unforgettable night.

After a quick changeover it was time for Glass Animals . The stage looked beautiful. The foreground looked like a retro hotel pool and the backdrop displayed a giant PC loading the show. The image brought flashbacks of waiting hours trying to download a song on Limewire .

When the band came out the crowd exploded in a roar that I don’t think ever stopped. Vintage visual art was displayed with an array of neon signs and strobes. Front-man Dave Bayley is a force to be reckoned with. He doesn’t stop dancing while singing, playing the guitar and encouraging the crowd. I was impressed by his moves and the band’s exuberant performance. If summer was a band, I’m pretty sure it would be Glass Animals . Young, energetic, colorful and so easy-going. Tangerine was a sensational performance. It has to be one of the catchiest songs I have heard in a long time. It was my first time hearing it and I left the venue singing it. I have been to lots of concerts at Ascend and I never saw so much energy from the crowd. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that the venue was throbbing. The crowd sang every song word for word and with the band’s encouragement, every able-bodied person was standing up and dancing with their arms in the sky.

Glass Animals are making giant waves and I can’t wait for them to come back.

Glass Animals

Glass Animals are from England, but Dave Bayley was formed by America. Bayley, the genre-melding band’s lead singer, primary songwriter, and producer, was born in Massachusetts in 1989 to Welsh and Israeli parents and moved as a child to Bryan, Texas, just north of Texas A&M University. Although based in a college football hub, Bayley grew up entranced by pop culture, particularly the electric and eccentric hip-hop acts of the Y2K era, from the Neptunes to Dr. Dre to Busta Rhymes. When he was 13, the family again relocated, this time all the way to Oxford, UK. Despite being the new kid in town, Bayley formed friendships that would last him all the way into adulthood at St. Edwards School, including with future Glass Animals bandmates Joe Seaward, Drew MacFarlane, and Edmund Irwin-Singer.

Fast forward to 2010. In the early years of his medical studies at King’s College London, Bayley’s insomnia begat pre-dawn writing sessions with production software, leading to the formation of Glass Animals. Some of their earliest music attracted enough attention online that the band decided to pull it down until they finished their degrees, but by 2012 they’d signed a recording contract and put out a debut EP, Leaflings . The project’s most enduring track was “Cocoa Hooves,” a floaty, minimal electronic track that laid Bayley’s soft falsetto croon on a bed of jazzy guitar, icy keyboards, finger snaps, and depth-charge synth-bass.

Within the year, they’d come to the attention of super-producer Paul Epworth, who at the time was riding high off his work for Adele and Florence + The Machine . Glass Animals became one of the first signings to Epworth’s new imprint, Wolf Tone. More EPs followed in 2013, including a self-titled release that spawned the band’s first collaboration with a rapper. “Woozy” paired Glass Animals with Chicago MC Jean Deaux, who delivered sighing, melodic bars over the band’s subtly intense psych-funk production. A move from Oxford to London precipitated the recording of the band’s debut album, partially inspired by William Stieg’s hallucinatory illustrated children’s story The Zabajaba Jungle .

‘It’s Blitz!’ How Yeah Yeah Yeahs Created The Art-Pop Album Of The Decade

Sing harpy: mark e. smith and the fall’s fontana years.

Before ZABA arrived in June 2014, crystallizing Glass Animals’ soulful, minimal hybrid sound, the band hyped it up with their first visit to North America and a flurry of singles, including “Black Mambo,” “Pools” and “Gooey.” The latter, a retro-futuristic indie-R&B track that found Bayley breathily singing about “peanut butter vibes” (portending a long history of lyrics pertaining to food), eventually went Platinum in the US. The album itself was a slow-burn success in the States, leading to sold-out tour dates in 2015 and hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist Chart more than a year after release. Elsewhere, ZABA took off more quickly – particularly in Australia, where it peaked at No. 12 on the ARIA chart, and “Gooey” cracked the top 40 on the singles chart. Capping off the ZABA era, Glass Animals teamed with the young Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ on “Lose Control,” a lean but hard-hitting bit of leftfield trap music.

The band compiled stories from people they met on tour supporting their first album, an archive that became the basis for 2016 sophomore effort How To Be A Human Being . The album functioned as sort of a short story anthology, with each song telling the tale of a different character. The vibrant opening track “Life Itself,” a cheeky profile of a sci-fi fanatic laced with spooky retro synths and banging Lollywood drums, went into heavy rotation at SiriusXM and became Glass Animals’ highest-charting song on American terrestrial radio to that point at No. 14. Subsequent singles like “Youth” and “Season 2 Episode 3” tapped into sounds like new wave and video-game-addled funky R&B, respectively. The album itself made it to No. 20 in the U.S. and No. 23 in the U.K., where it was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize.

Glass Animals’ momentum seemed unstoppable until Seaward was hit by a truck while cycling in Dublin in July 2018, leading to a broken leg and fractured skull among other injuries. Reeling from Seaward’s near-death experience, the band canceled their tour dates and paused their activities as he relearned basic functions like talking and walking, let alone how to play the drums. During the hiatus, Bayley branched out as a writer and producer outside the band, tapping into his own nostalgic memories while conceiving new Glass Animals material. Near the end of 2019, the band returned with “Tokyo Drifting,” a collab with Florida rapper Denzel Curry that would become the first taste of their third album.

By the time Dreamland arrived in 2020, Glass Animals had kicked out several more singles, including “Your Love (Déjà Vu),” “Dreamland,” “It’s All So Incredibly Loud,” and the one that would become their biggest hit by far. The funky yet melancholy “Heat Waves” blended rock, hip-hop, synth-pop, and more into a contagious groove. Lyrically it found Bayley processing grief over lost friendships and the effects of codependent romance: “Sometimes, all I think about is you/ Late nights in the middle of June.” It was released into a pandemic summer, with a video that mourned the loss of the communal live music experience. In that context, the song resonated – and just kept resonating. One of the great slow-build success stories in music history, “Heat Waves” spent nearly two years climbing charts around the world, buoyed by radio play and TikTok syncs alike. In the US, it hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 2022 after a record-breaking 59 weeks on the chart, ultimately staying on top for five weeks.

Glass Animals became one of the most successful rock bands of their era – an era when rock bands with No. 1 singles are incredibly rare – in part by evolving the sound of rock for a new generation, channeling an eclectic mix of styles into something singular and compelling.

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
