A Brief History of Orion

People of this town had known many stories of how Orion got its name. Some folks say that Udyong was the first name adapted by this town. It came from the words “lu-ad” and “uryong” which meant muddy, because of the fact4 that the place was muddy and swampy during those times.

Another popular story was that during the Spanish regime, some Spanish soldiers happened to pass by this town. They did not know the name of the place so they asked the people they saw in the ricefields. One of the soldiers pointed his finger to the ground and asked “Que es el llama pueblo”. Not understanding Spanish the people thought that the soldier was referring to something he saw on the ground that happens to be a worm. The hurriedly answered “uod yon”, referring to the worm. When the soldiers heard the word, they thought that the citizens were referring to the name of the town, and left the place numbling to themselves. “Uod, uod yon”. Thus, the town was known as Udyong and was later changed to Orion.

The date of official recognition of the municipality of Orion could not be ascertained, however, records showed that this municipality was founded by a Dominican on April 30, 1667. On September 16 , 1852, a strong earthquake shook the whole archipelago and caused the destruction of the parochial church and was later rebuilt by Fr. Ulpiano Herrera, the parish priest of the place at that time. In 1892, forty years later, a big fire practically burned the whole town, that only three houses remained safe. It was Fr. Jose Campomanes who tried to reconstruct the town from the ashes and ruins of the fire and transformed it into a beautiful and prosper one. This was the beginning of the progress.

Guide to Visiting Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bataan, Philippines

Last Updated on August 6, 2021 by Tina

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is a resort in Bagac, Bataan in the Philippines that is home to Jose Acuzar’s collection of restored Spanish-Filipino houses. Most of the houses are originals collected from different provinces while some are replicas. The original houses were carefully dismantled then they were carefully restored by the resort’s artist.

You can go on a day tour of the resort and experience history firsthand. Or spend overnight in the resort and stay in one of the hotel rooms or private casas.

The first time I visited this place was in 2017 with my best friends. It was a very spontaneous trip, something that we planned the night before. We had a great time during the trip and enjoyed taking pictures inside the resort. After that trip, I was able to visit the resort again twice in 2019. In February that year, I attended a colleague’s wedding held there.

In December that same year, a friend was in the Philippines to attend his colleague’s wedding. I took him to Las Casas because it is one of the few tourist attractions in Central Luzon that I could think of. I would have taken him to Ilocos Norte (I’m sure he would have loved my birthplace) or Sagada and Banawe, but he was in the country for a few days only and he stayed in Clark because his colleague’s wedding was in Bulacan.

Due to the current situation, Las Casas accepts day tours and stay-in reservations are every Friday and Saturday only until September 30, 2021. And as of the moment, Las Casas is temporarily closed until August 20, 2021, following Bataan LGU’s implementation of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).

How to Get to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

By Private Transportation

Bataan is accessible via the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX).

By Public Transportation

Due to the pandemic, public transportation may not be available at the moment.

There are buses running directly to Balanga town proper from Metro Manila. Take the Genesis Bus to Balanga Bus Station. From the bus station, take the jeepney going to Bagac or Morong (Bagac-bound has a limited time while Morong-bound has a longer time). Upon reaching Bagac, get down at the Filipino-Japanese Friendship Tower and go to the tricycle station. Take a tricycle going to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar (Gate 5 entrance).

At the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) in Pasay City, the ferry going to Orion, Bataan is located at the Pasay City Esplanade Seaside Terminal (behind Mall of Asia and beside Vikings Luxury Buffet). Take the M/V XGC Express Ferry Boat to Capinpin port in Orion, Bataan. From Orion Port, ride a bus going to Mariveles and get off at Alauli. Then, ride a jeep going to Bagac or a bus going to Morong and get off at the main entrance of Las Casas. You may ride a tricycle from there or you may also get a tricycle at the Filipino Japanese Friendship.

Take lots of pictures around the property for your Instagram.

I have a confession to make. The primary reason we visited Las Casas with my friends in 2017 was not really to learn about the history of the houses but to take pictures. The truth is we did join the Heritage Walking Tour but after checking out 2 or 3 houses, we decided not to go on with the tour anymore because it was too hot. Instead, we went to Plaza de Castro to eat and later on went to the batis-inspired swimming pool to hang out and take pictures. Then we rented a golf cart so it will be easier for us to explore the property.

The Pawikan Conservation Center in Morong is a sanctuary for endangered sea turtles – specifically Olive Ridley , one of the five species of marine turtles found in the Philippines. The center also offers educational programs about their protection and rehabilitation.

You can visit the center to learn more about their efforts (and donate if you want to). It’s an enlightening experience since you will learn about the sea turtles and how the volunteers keep track and take care of them.

Make sure to visit during the nesting season ( November to March ). Specifically, head there in November to see the turtles lay their eggs and January to February to witness the hatchlings being released back to the sea. Obviously, there are no specific dates on when the eggs will watch, but if you are around the area you can call the center and ask them to update you of possible hatchlings.

Bataan 0 km death march marker in Mariveles

The Zero Kilometer Death March Marker (also known as the “KM 0” marker) is a significant historical site located in Mariveles, Bataan. It marks the starting point of the Bataan Death March , a tragic event during World War II where in thousands of Filipinos and Americans were forced to walk from Mariveles (Bataan) to Capas (Tarlac), covering a distance of about 104 kilometers.

The march took several days and was characterized by extreme brutality, harsh conditions, and a lack of food and water. Thousands of prisoners died along the way due to exhaustion, disease, and maltreatment by their captors.

This site is often the start of historical tours covering the events of WWII in Bataan, Pampanga, and Tarlac.

Mount Samat Shrine of Valor

For history buffs and adventure seekers, a visit to Mount Samat National Shrine is a must. It is home to the iconic Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor), a memorial for Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II.

Reach the top by climbing over 300 steps where you can see a shrine and tablets detailing the events of Bataan Death Mark. Afterwards, you can visit the small museum attached to the colonnade and then appreciate the views outside.

Next up on our list of Bataan tourist spots is the Bataan World War II Museum. This museum in Balanga City is dedicated to preserving and commemorating the events and stories surrounding the role of Bataan Province during the WWII, particularly the heroic stand and sacrifices made by Filipino and American soldiers in the defense of Bataan against the Japanese forces in 1942.

It is also the site where Major General Edward King Jr. surrendered to the Japanese to prevent further death and destruction. This museum is small but nonetheless an important historical site in Bataan.

One of the best tourist spots in Bataan, Five Fingers Cove and the nearby Laki Beach offer a fun beach and island hopping experience.

You might be wondering why the place is called Five Fingers . It’s because it consists of five islands with four coves in between, which resembles five fingers when viewed from above. The set of coves include: Conchino’s Point , Talaga Beach , Naiclec Point , and Longos Kawayan .

Here you can enjoy stunning views of cliffs, caves, and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. You can also go cliff jumping or trek to the nearby lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the cove.

Meanwhile, Laki Beach is a white-sand beach where you can swim and relax after your island hopping adventure.

Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach is easily accessible and is one of the popular day trips from Manila .

Bataan is home to several mountains that can be visited as a day hike from Manila. One of the best ones that offer a challenging yet rewarding hike is Mount Natib — a beginner-friendly dormant volcanic mountain lying in Orani, Bataan.

The trek to the summit takes about 3-4 hours depending on your pace. The route is a mix of easy and difficult trails, with steep slopes and rope trails. Experience being one with nature as you navigate through lush forests and the scenic trail leading to its summit, where you can see a panoramic view of Subic Bay and surrounding landscapes.

After the climb, you can also visit the nearby Pasukulan Falls — one of the highest waterfalls in Bataan Province. Although it is more challenging than other day hikes, climbing Mount Natib is a unique, fulfilling experience, making it one of the best Bataan tourist spots that you should explore.

For nature enthusiasts, one of the must-visit Bataan tourist spots is the magnificent Pasukulan Falls — an unspoiled gem nestled within the verdant wilderness of Bataan Natural Park in Abucay.

You can visit the waterfall either via Mount Natib or Pinagbutasan Trail in the town of Orani. The journey to the falls itself is an adventure, where you can experience a refreshing hike through lush green trails and even see rare flora and fauna, including sinimpit (a local berry that grows in the wild).

Once you reach the falls, you’ll be greeted by a mesmerizing sight of the 60-meter waterfall, cascading into a serene pool surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature. Jump in for a cold swim or have a picnic beside the waterfall with your friends. If you’re a fan of offbeat paths and tranquil spots, don’t miss out on this hidden paradise when you’re in Bataan!

Papaya River in Mt. Mariveles

Tarak Ridge is one of the best hikes in Bataan, ideal for experienced climbers. Its name is derived from the words “tabak” (meaning hunting knife) and “tarik” (meaning steep), referring to the length of the ridge and the steepness of the trail leading to the summit. It is part of the larger crater of Mount Mariveles, a dormant stratovolcano similar to Mount Natib.

It’s best to spend an overnight to fully enjoy the mountain climbing experience in Tarak Ridge. The trek takes a total of 5-6 hours depending on your pace. Make a stop at the refreshing Papaya River (one of the cleanest mountain rivers I’d seen) before setting camp at Tarak Ridge and then preparing for the 2-hour trek to the summit the following day for the sunrise views. The summit will reward you of Manila Bay, Corregidor Island, and distant cities of Manila and Cavite.

Tikip Falls is one of the most underrated tourist spots in Bataan – a hidden gem among those who love chasing pristine waterfalls.

Located at the municipality of Limay, this waterfall stands 30 feet high with a deep plunge pool where you can enjoy swimming in the cool, refreshing water. It also serves as the source of water of the Nagsingkong and Pita Rivers.

The trek to the waterfall takes about an hour. It’s a fantastic place to visit for beginner hikers, as well as leisure visitors including families who want to have a fun family day out.

A journey of the historical tourist attractions in Bataan wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Bataan Technology Park .

Located in the rolling hills of the Morong Special Economic Zone, this 365-hectare hub was the former site of the United Nations Philippine Refugee Processing Zone. It then became a temporary home for refugees from the neighboring countries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia after the Fall of Saigon.

Today, you can visit the park to see historical monuments and shrines constructed by the refugees and drop by the museum, which houses interesting artifacts including the actual boat used by the refugees.

When visiting Balanga — the capital city of Bataan Province, don’t forget to drop by Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga, a beautiful public space reminiscent of Madrid. It follows the concentric zoning implemented during the Spanish Colonial Era, with the government building and church at the center.

Take pictures of the beautiful buildings, visit the 18th-century Balanga Cathedral, and sit down for a cup of coffee in a nearby café. The plaza also holds events such as food events such as the famous banchetto.

For a weekend of outdoor fun with your family, head to Dunsulan Park in Pilar, Bataan. Located at the foot of Mount Samat (just a short drive from the shrine), this nature park is a great place to commune with nature, engage in treetop adventure and horseback riding, and enjoy picnicking.

Within the park, you will also find Dunsulan Falls – a small waterfall perfect for swimming. This waterfall may be small at 5 meters high and 40 feet deep, but it’s refreshing and looks beautiful surrounded by the rock formations and lush trees.

The best thing about Dunsulan Park is its entrance fees are affordable! For these reason, it’s one of our top Bataan tourist spots especially for families.

Playa la Caleta - one of the best Bataan beach resorts

You’ll find several beach resorts in Bataan, but one that stands out is Playa la Caleta. Located in a secluded cove in the coastal town of Morong, this resort offers comfortable glamping experience with its luxurious tents and cottages, white-sand beach perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and a host of other adventures. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature to yourselves!

Other than beach bumming and swimming, there are other things you can do in the resort including trekking to the nearby Tres Marias Falls, island hopping to other nearby coves, and cliff jumping.

10 Best BATAAN TOURIST SPOTS (Heritage & Beyond)

 alt=

I was back in Bataan, through an invite from the Tourism Office to cover Padyakan sa Bataan as well as to explore tourist spots and historical sites in the province.

It was a year ago when I also traveled within the province through a Press trip invitation from the Tourism Regional Office. At that time, we explored the provinces of Pampanga and Bataan. Since I came back to the province, I decided to update this blog post to include the sites that we’ve explored during our recent trip.

Here are the tourist spots and attractions you shouldn’t miss in Bataan.

1. Bataan Tourism Center

This should be your first stop in exploring the province. Bataan Tourism Center will provide you all the necessary information about attractions to visit, activities, and also food to enjoy. This tourism information hub is open every day to cater to the needs and answer the questions of every tourist.

Bataan Tourism Center also houses an Audio-Visual Room, Exhibit Hall, and the Provincial Tourism Office. This is the first stop to get all the necessary information needed for the trip, and also the last to buy your pasalubong .

2. Bataan World War II Museum

After having our lunch at Trihouse Restaurant , we traveled to our first historical site for the day – Bataan World War II Museum.

The place is located within the vicinity of Balanga Elementary School. So we passed through the school grounds until we reached the two-story structure. The museum serves as a tribute to all Filipino and American soldiers who sacrificed their lives last World War II  during the Fall of Bataan, followed by the historic Bataan Death March.

Before we even entered the museum, Sir Alan Valbuena of Bataan Tourism showed us the “Surrender site marker,” a life-size statue of Major General Edward King when he signed the document stating that they were surrendering the Philippines to Japan on April 9, 1942.

In the museum, we were greeted by the staff. Before we could even explore the memorabilia of the war inside, they let us watch a video first detailing the story of how Bataan has fallen to the hands of the Japanese invaders.

Bataan World War II Museum 1

It was an interesting video showing the timeline of the history and explaining the details in the simplest way possible.

Bataan World War II Museum

On the second floor, we’ve witnessed the riveting images of the people and children who suffered during the war. Beside this is a room dedicated to the memorabilia of the former first lady- Luz Banzon Magsaysay, wife of former President Ramon Magsaysay. It is filled with photos, clothes, furniture, and personal belongings of the former first lady.

Location:  Jose Basa St, City of Balanga, Bataan

3. Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor

I remember we were about to visit the Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor during my press trip in Bataan last year with the Regional Tourism Office, but that didn’t push through. During that time, there was a huge event, and people were all walking going to Mt. Samat, and they didn’t allow vehicles.

This time, finally, I was able to visit this famous site in the province. It took us about 20 minutes of land travel before we arrived at the site.  It was then that I realized that the cross was huge! And there are a lot of visitors at that time.

Mt Samat Shrine of Valor

Masyadong maliwanag hahaha

Mt. Samat Shrine of Valor was built in 1970 as a memorial cross for the sacrifices and bravery of Filipinos who fought and perished during World War II.

There is an elevator inside this huge cross that would take you up for you to enjoy the 360-degree view of the Bataan Peninsula. It was a good way to enjoy the beauty of the province as well as to reflect and pay respect to the heroes of the past war.

Location: Pilar, Bataan

4. Zero Kilometer Marker of Bataan Death March

If you’re looking for it, this is just located beside the Jollibee .

Zero Kilometer Marker of Bataan Death March

In this same spot was the start of the Bataan Death March on April 10, 1942, where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers perished. This shrine is a way to pay respect to all of our heroes who sacrificed for our freedom against the Japanese invaders.

Location:  Ave of the Philippines, Mariveles, 2105 Bataan

To understand more about the Bataan Death March, here’s an explainer video from Simple History.

5. Sisiman Lighthouse

We weren’t able to visit the picturesque Sisiman Lighthouse, but I’ve already visited the place during my travel to Five Fingers Cove a couple of years ago.

Sisiman lighthouse is lightless after typhoon Pedring destroyed it in 2011, but it’s still a sight to behold, especially during sunset.

6. Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach

It was a couple of years ago when I traveled to Mariveles to visit the booming summer destination at that time – Five Fingers Cove and Laki Beach.

The experience can not be considered island hopping because there was no island separated from the mainland that we explored. We hopped from one cove to another. Five Fingers Cove’s name was derived from its look on the map. When you try to check Google Maps, the location is similar to your fingers.

Five Fingers Cove Mariveles Bataan

Mataas yan. talon ka? hehehe

This is a total adventure and summer getaway. We explored beaches, cliffs, and rock formations that it made me realized that hey, there is such a place like this in Mariveles? I was amazed by the natural charm and beauty.

Laki Beach Mariveles Bataan

Our last stop was Laki Beach, where we had our lunch and spent the entire afternoon. The beach was pristine, and we had a relaxing experience. I just hope that tourists will continue to protect this beach as I’ve recently been getting messages from readers that Laki Beach’s waste problem is getting worse. Well, that made me sad. I hope the owners would do some measures to protect the beach, and maybe they should also tap the help of the government to protect the beach.

 7. Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

I remember the first time I visited Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, a few years ago.

It was our company’s team building. I was just a regular working dude then, never in my life have I imagined that I would be a travel blogger. Seriously. I remember I was amazed by those old structures, but my appreciation has no depth. I find the structures beautiful, but my mind was not creative enough to appreciate its history. I’m glad that I’ve grown these past years.

The most memorable for me on that first visit was all the good times I had with my workmates until we got drunk. I had those moments when in the middle of the night, I would look out the window and see some “Guardia sibil” walking or women in Filipiniana. Then, I had that split-second confusion, Did we travel back in time? Was that a ghost? Then the logical part of my brain would kick in, “Oh, they’re the staff of Las Casas.

After five years, I’m back at Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar, as part of the travel writers invited by the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 3 for a press trip. And I can say that I am back as a grown person, better and matured, from a usual dude to a travel enthusiast and writer who appreciates and puts more value on culture and heritage.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar

I noticed there are lots of improvements in Las Casas. There are more structures, and the reception area was transferred from a small house to a vast mansion that can be reached after crossing a scenic bridge.

Las Casas simply brings you back to the past, especially during the Spanish colonial times. The old houses in the complex were acquired by the owner, Jose “Jerry” Acuzar, from various parts of the country, transferred to the complex, then meticulously rebuilt and restored. It took a lot of years before structures were built, and there is still a lot of construction going on.

One of the most exciting activities you could try in Las Casas is the River Tour. It’s a cruise around the property on a balsa passing through a narrow canal surrounded by houses. We passed through some brick walls, verandas, and balconies that depict the old Manila. It was like a replica of estero during the old Manila. It’s sad that while I was enjoying the cruise, I couldn’t help but ask. What happened? Why weren’t we able to preserve these? If what I was seeing was accurate, the old Manila looked like the canals of Venice or other European countries.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar Bataan

Another excellent experience there is the Heritage Tour. I remember this was offered to us on my first travel to Las Casas years ago during our team building, but I didn’t participate because I was busy drinking. Hahaha! But now, I will not miss the chance to join the tour.

It all started at Casa Lubao. Then from one old house to another, the tour guide explained the houses’ history. Each house has a distinct story, worthy of being shared. We were already in the third house when I got a message from a fellow blogger that they were looking for me because it was time for lunch.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar Bataan

We traveled through the kalesa and toured the entire place. Then we had our lunch at Hotel De Oriente. This is just a replica of the original hotel, which was the first luxury hotel in Binondo during the Spanish colonial era.

What amazed us are the wooden sculptures with intricate designs surrounding the hotel’s lobby. It’s a perfect setting for any photo sessions.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar Bataan

We left Las Casas after lunch and traveled for a few hours going to Mt. Samat National Shrine. Unfortunately, there was this significant pilgrimage at that time, and they were not allowing vehicles to get in close to the spot. If we would insist on going there, we had to hike for a few kilometers.

Our guides decided not to pursue, so we traveled to Balanga, checked in at The Plaza Hotel explored more of Balanga by chilling at The Beanery Coffee Shop. Then, we had dinner at a local restaurant.

8. Balanga City (Christmas Season)

Balanga City

One of the best ways to discover more of a specific destination is to go to the market. At night, we went to the market and experienced the Christmas tiangge there. I bought 2 T-shirts, while my travel buddies bought clothes, slippers and many more. Fantastic, they have a shirt for my size. Hahaha!

We went back to our hotel fully satisfied with what Bataan has to offer – the scenery, history, and food. Thumbs up!

9. Bataan National Park

After our breakfast, we traveled to Orani, Bataan, for some nature trip.

Bataan National Park is a protected area in the mountainous part of the province. It has a total of 23.6 hectares of thick forest and mountains encompassing Orani, Hermosa, Samal, Abucay, Balanga, Bagac, and Morong.

Bataan National Park

The structures of the viewing deck looked old but can still be renovated and used. There are some plans by the local Tourism office to renovate the place for the upcoming promotion of Orani as the next destination for nature lovers.

Bataan National Park

10. Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park

We planned to have our lunch at the Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park located at the jump-off point for hikers and mountain climbers going to the view deck, Pasukulan Falls and Mt. Natib. This is a mountain resort with lots of spots overlooking the mountainous parts of Orani. But before that, the staff let us experience their amenities, some adventure activities like wall climbing, rappelling, and zip line!

I wasn’t able to try wall climbing because obviously, I am overweight. I know that if I tried wall climbing, I’d just be embarrassing myself. Hahaha! I need more time to get fit, and when that time comes, I’m going back.

Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park

Ang strong. LOL!

Vista Tala Resort and Recreational Park Bataan

By the end of the activities, we all tried the zipline! Of course, having fear of heights, I still got scared a bit. I was able to do the zipline in Lake Sebu in South Cotabato , the highest zipline in Southeast Asia, so this will just be a piece of cake. Hahaha!

Our tour ended with a sumptuous lunch at the resort.

Batanes’ unspoiled beauty is most evident in its beautiful beaches. From powdery white sand to scattered boulders rounded by time and waves, Batanes has a variety of seascapes you can swim in, visit, and lounge at, such as Morong Beach.

Located in Sabtang Island, Morong Beach is one of the more popular beaches in the province, thanks to the large rock formation called Nakabuang Arch.

This natural formation is said to be the most photographed spot in all of Batanes and has become the icon of Sabtang Island and Batanes as a whole.

Unlike other beaches in Batanes, the waves in Morong Beach are gentler, making it safer for tourists to take a dip. Its pristine white sand is comparable to that of Boracay.

It is also far fairer than that of the other beaches in the province. You can visit this Batanes tourist spot along with others by joining a Sabtang Island day tour .

The elders also talk of the past Mount Iraya eruption, referring to the gaps near the top where lava and water sprout from the craters.

Mt. Iraya is one of the Philippines’ 22 active volcanoes, and its last eruption took place in 1454. It stands at 1,517 meters and is quite steep.

The trail is narrow and covered in trees and vines. It also gets increasingly muddy and slippery, which can pose a challenge to inexperienced hikers. But once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with great views of the island.

You can join a Mt. Iraya hiking adventure if you want to experience it to the fullest.

Basco Lighthouse in Basco, Batanes with Mt. Iraya in the background

Start your Batanes lighthouse tour bright and early in Basco, located on the main island, Batan.

Built-in March 2003 to serve as a guide to local fishermen, the 66-ft tower Basco Lighthouse offers a 360-degree view of Basco town proper, Basco port, and the West Philippine Sea.

Basco Lighthouse is one of the three active lighthouses suggested by Florencio Abad, a former Batanes Congressman. Sabtang and Mahatao are the two other lighthouses, and all of them are considered tourist attractions in the province.

It was also the previous location of American telegraph facilities linking Batanes to the central government until it got demolished due to the bombing of the Japanese Imperial Army in the beginning of World War II.

Make sure to join some Basco Lighthouse tours  during your trip in Batanes. The observation deck is ideal for viewing the whole of Batan Island from end to end, including Mount Iraya.

Sabtang Island in the south of Basco can also be seen, as well as Itbayat Island, located in the north.

Travelers enjoying the view and taking photos at the Vayang Rolling Hills with a carabao in the side

Vayang Rolling Hills will give you an unobstructed view of the majestic Mt. Iraya, as well as the province’s significant islands Batan, Sabtang, and Itbayat, all at once.

A big part of the rolling hills used to be public land covered in cogon grass, which is used by the locals to make their cogon roofs.

Today, most of the land in Vayang consists of farmland. From afar, you can see goats and cows grazing in the greenery. You can also catch a glimpse of the beautiful West Philippine Sea when you’re in the rolling hills.

Take photos as you admire the Philippine sceneries offered in this Batanes tourist destination, which is part of a North Batan escapade .

To get here, you can ride a motorbike, tricycle, or rent a van if you’re coming from Basco Airport or town proper.

Most North Batan tours include this tourist spot in the itinerary, so you’ll have more attractions to visit after visiting the majestic Vayang Rolling Hills.

Pyramid of stones at the Valugan Boulder Beach in Batanes, Philippines

Come and visit Valugan Boulder Beach. Countless round boulders and smaller stones fill the entire three-kilometer stretch of this Batanes beach on Batan Island.

It is said that the rocks on this beach were ejected from Mt. Iraya during an eruption several centuries ago and that the stones have been rounded due to the years of continually pounding waves from the Pacific Ocean.

Because of the rough terrain, swimming at Valugan Boulder Beach is not allowed. Taking the stones home as souvenirs is not allowed either.

  • Book a  North & South Batan Batanes tour

It’s best visited during the early morning or late afternoon!Make sure to catch the sunrise if you can as it’s a beautiful sight to behold.

It’s one of the must-see tourist spots in the province. Often a part of North Batan tours, you can visit this beach by riding a tricycle or renting a van from the Basco Airport or town proper.

Although the tourist spot has strong winds and powerful waves hitting the boulders, Valugan Boulder Beach is a beautiful tourist spot included in a sightseeing trip in North and South Batan .

Tukon Chapel, also known as Mt. Carmel Chapel in Batanes, Philippines

Batanes has dozens of churches scattered throughout its three inhabited islands. But one Batanes church that you shouldn’t miss when you do go for a visit is Mt. Carmel Chapel, also known to locals as Tukon Church.

Local artisans built this small chapel on top of a hill, and the province’s traditional stone houses inspired its design.

The chapel is ideal for couples who want a romantic and small marriage ceremony. Inside the chapel are paintings of saints done by local artists.

Outside the chapel, you can see the crashing waves where the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea converge. You can take a short walk from the chapel to the PAGASA Radar Station, also known as Tukon Radar Station.

Florencio Abad’s family built the church. Abad is the former Budget Secretary during President Aquino’s term.

His family is one of the most prominent in Batanes, which is why they were able to build the church for them and has become one of the highlights of a Batanes experience .

Waves crashing the shore near the Sabtang Lighthouse in Batan, Batanes

The only lighthouse on Sabtang Island greets you after a 45-minute faluwa ride from Ivana Port in Batan Island.

Its features are like the Basco and Tayid lighthouses, but the Sabtang Lighthouse stone walls are left in its natural state. The beam also offers a breathtaking view of the rolling hills and the open ocean from the top of its observation tower.

In the early 2000s, the beacon, together with Basco and Tayid lighthouses, was part of a project headed by the late Representative Butch Abad.

  • Book a  Sabtang Island & South Batan Batanes tour

All three were constructed primarily as guides to seafarers crossing the Pacific Ocean and West Philippine Sea, but later on, they were turned into tourist spots.

Just like the other two lighthouses, Sabtang Lighthouse is topped with a concrete lantern room painted red with each window having tapered storm panes.

During the construction of each tower, rubble masonry was used to make the structure sturdy enough to withstand the strong winds and the heavy rains that frequently occur in the province. This is included in one of the must-see tourist destinations in Sabtang Island .

Tayid Lighthouse in Mahatao Island of Batanes, Philippines

Tayid Lighthouse is located in Mahatao, on the other side of Batan Island. Built around the same time as Basco Lighthouse, this structure faces the Pacific Ocean and is best seen from the Rakuh a Payaman.

Unlike its sister lighthouse in Basco, which has a round tower deck, the Tayid Lighthouse has a hexagonal tower deck.

Many tourists consider it an 18th-century-old edifice, but in actuality, it was built during the early 2000s. The establishment of Tayid Lighthouse, as well as the Basco and Sabtang lighthouses, was a proposal of the former Representative Butch Abad.

Built initially for guiding boats and ships traveling near Batan Island, the lighthouse now doubles as a tourist spot. The beam offers a view of the surrounding green landscapes, open ocean, and the nearby Mount Iraya.

The tower can be best viewed from the and Diura Fishing Village and the main viewing point of Marlboro Country. If you want a unique experience, you can join a tricycle tour in Batanes to see the province in a different light.

House of Dakay is the oldest surviving stone house in Ivana, Batan of Batanes

Near the House of Dakay is the Old Spanish Bridge, built during colonial times. It is still being used as a pedestrian bridge by the locals today.

  • Read about cultural tourism in the Philippines

In 1887, Luisa Estrella commissioned the construction of the House of Dakay, but turned it over to her favorite nephew, Jose Dakay Estrella, to whom the structure was named after.

On September 13, 1918, a devastating earthquake hit the island. However, along with four homes, the House of Dakay survived the disaster and still stands firm until today.

The house was eventually given to Floresida Estrella or “Lola Ida,” the only descendant. She looks after the edifice and entertains the tourists coming to visit.

She was one of the most photographed personalities in Batanes and has been featured in magazines, including Reader’s Digest, along with the house. You can visit this tourist spot along with other highlights in a fun  tricycle day tour in Batanes.

10. Explore Naidi Hills

Golden hour at Naidi Hills in Batan, Batanes

The first Batanes lighthouse has been constructed here in Naidi Hills. The site offers a breathtaking view of Baluarte Bay, Basco Town, Mount Iraya, and the sloping hills of Batan Island.

On a clear day, the entire Batanes, including the islets beyond Itbayat, can be seen from the hills. Naidi is derived from the Ivatan phrase “past settlement.”

According to history, it was once the most extensive wireless communication facility in the country, connecting Batanes to Manila during the American period, up to the demise of a grenade by the Japanese Imperial Air Force in the beginning of World War II.

It’s best to visit Naidi Hills during midday so you can witness the beauty of the sunset. Visiting the lighthouse would require 15-30 minutes walk, but it’s worth it as you’ll get treated to a quaint and picturesque view of Batanes.

Serene view of Rakuh a Payaman, also known as Marlboro Country in Batanes, Philippines

There is no shortage of Batanes tourist spots in Batan Island, and you can get a taste of Batanes’ history and culture as you explore its beautiful small towns . Perhaps the most photographed tourist spot in Batanes is the Rakuh a Payaman, affectionately called Marlboro Hills in Mahatao.

The hills are vast pastureland dotted with grazing cows, carabaos, and horses. It offers a perfect view of where land, sea, and sky meet in harmony.

With the green grass covering the hill, the landscape provides a spacious and open area for cows, water buffalos, and horses where they can freely graze and wander about. The government allows free use of the pastureland for locals who want to raise their cattle and carabaos in the area.

This tourist spot is accessible anytime! To get here, you can rent a tricycle or hire a van as it’s often included in a North and South Batan tour . Make sure to take snapshots so you can show to your friends and family back home!

Aerial shot of the Chawa View Deck in Batanes, Philippines

The Chawa View Deck features rolling green hills, rock formations, and a panoramic view of the seascape. There is also a cave of the Virgin Mary and a few concrete chairs for the visitors located at the top of the view deck.

Another main feature of this attraction is the winding stairs leading to the rocky shore facing the sea. It consists of several flights and more than a hundred steps. At the bottom of the stairs is a “mini pool,” whose color differs from that of the ocean water and settles down inside a small area.

Local dishes usually served in breadfruit leaves

Are you hungry from all the sightseeing and hiking? Don’t leave Batanes without trying the local cuisine! A trip to Batanes won’t be complete without food, and the islands have plenty of mouthwatering dishes to offer visitors.

Try their local dishes in the restaurant or homestay kitchens to complete your Batanes experience! There’s one called payi, Batanes’ local lobsters. You also have to try their staple fish like mahi-mahi, dibang or flying fish, and local dishes like uvud, vunes, and luñis.

For restaurants, check out Vunong Dinette, Pension Ivatan, SDC Canteen, and Paypanapanayan Canteen! They’re highly recommended if you want to try their local delights and delicacies.

A gastronomic adventure is waiting for you in Batanes, so make sure to have a checklist of the food you want to try and the restaurants you plan to visit with your loved ones!

Featured in local films in the Philippines such as “You’re My Boss,” retirees Jose and Elena Gabilo own Honesty Coffee Shop. It was opened in 1995 to serve travelers going to and from Sabtang Island. Here, honesty is the best policy—as the store is unmanned.

The Honesty Coffee Shop opens as early as 6:00 A.M. and closes around 6:00 P.M. Don’t expect a café just because it’s called a coffee shop.

Instead, it is more of a sari-sari store where the items sold are bare necessities for travelers like instant coffee, soda, bottled water, biscuits and crackers, fried bananas, and sweet potatoes, souvenir t-shirts, and even bread and local pastry.

The prices of goods and souvenirs are written on the items. It’s a self-service store where you can take what you need, eat to your heart’s content, clean up, and leave your payment in a box.

According to the owner, retired schoolteacher Elena Gabilo, this honesty system has proven effective among residents and tourists. It just shows that honesty can be a good business and a great way to appreciate a day trip in Batanes .

Batanes' Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel served as a shelter for the Japanese forces during World War II

On the Tukon hills, you can see the Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel, an interconnected network of tunnels carved out of the mountain. It served as a shelter for the Japanese forces during World War II. The tunnel is open for tourists to traverse, but remember to bring a flashlight or headlamp if you want to go exploring.

Between 1941 to 1945, the soldiers had the Ivatan troops dig the tunnel, building five exit points, bunkers, chambers, and a reservoir. The bunker was their headquarters during the battle with the Americans.

You will find nothing inside but stones, small holes, and walls of the broken tube. Many entry points have concrete above to shield the tunnel from the war bombs.

To ensure safety, tourists should not enter the tunnel without a tour guide and a flashlight or torch. Visit this tourist attraction in a unique manner by joining a tricycle tour in North Batan .

Batanes' Diura Fishing Village at sunset

Take a break from swimming, hiking, and getting windblown to see how the fishermen in Batanes live their daily lives at the Diura Fishing Village, which is also located in Mahatao.

Time your visit in March or April to witness the kapayvanuvanu, an age-old ritual done by the Diura fishermen to ensure a bountiful fishing season.

The ceremony begins with a shaman offering a pig while reading signs from the liver for good omen and catch. The entire cycle of fishing and harvesting for dorado continues until May.

You can get to Diura Fishing Village by tricycle with a travel time of ten minutes or by joining a day trip to Diura Fishing Village .

Outside the fishing festival, you can view the Madi Bay, Pacific Ocean, and Mount Iraya from afar. A nearby spring called Rakuh-a-idi Spring (Spring of Youth / Fountain of Youth) can also be reached with a 30-minute trek.

As a natural spring pool that overlooks the beach and the scenic Mount Iraya, it has become one of the places to visit in Batanes for relaxation and solace.

Picturesque Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint in Batanes, Philippines

Sabtang Island also has its version of rolling hills: the Chamantad-Tinyan Viewpoint. Its slopes and rocky outcrops are equally as enthralling as Vayang and Rakuh, a Payaman in Batan Island. It is known for its curvy landscape carpeted with grass.

The rolling hills that conquer the area come in a variety of low and high slopes giving different perspectives for its visitors. The highest hilltop among the slopes provides the best view of Chamantad Cove.

There is a small trail here that will lead you to the seascape that is covered with powdery sand and low to mid-sized rocks.

  • Book a  Sabtang Island & North Batan Batanes tour

Before reaching the hilltop, there are plenty of huts along the highway that offer a sample of their locally-made sugarcane wine and Ivatan wild tea, called tubho.

Aside from sightseeing in Sabtang Island , you can also find locals, known as Ivatans, wandering the area to lend their traditional clothing – the Vakul and Kanayi, for picture taking purposes.

Vakul is their native headgear used for protection against the sun and rain, while Kanayi is a sleeveless jacket they usually wear when farming.

Travelers in front of a typical stone house in Savidug, Batanes

From the church, you can get to Savidug, a coastal village teeming with traditional cogon-roofed stone houses. Savidug Stone Houses are the primary type of dwelling in Batanes, particularly in a small barangay in Sabtang Island.

The Ivatans maintain these houses, the indigenous people inhabiting the island. This village, together with Chavayan, remains untouched where locals still live traditionally.

The structures of the houses in Savidug village are considered as a Sinadumparan type, one of the traditional houses in Batanes. It's one of the main highlights of a Sabtang Island experience ; getting acquainted with art.

Each one of the cogon roofs has a specific day of replacement. The villagers would work together to finish the roofing, which is called Kapayatep and the re-thatching, which is called Mayvuvung.

This roof replacement process is an excellent example of Bayanihan in the village, an Ivatan tradition to help each other to achieve a common goal.

19. Dive at Trevallies Lair and Canyons

Batanes may be known for its rolling hills and untouched landscapes, but it is also home to stunning natural attractions underwater. There are two popular dive sites in Batanes: Travallies Lair and Canyons.

Just like its name suggests, Trevallies Lair is where you can find trevallies being cleaned by cleaner wrasses. Canyons, on the other hand, is home to steep slopes, coral formations, and and anemone fish.

Other interesting underwater gems you can encounter when diving in Batanes are nudibranchs and fields of Pavona corals. You have the option to dive from the shore or a boat but take note that Batanes boat rides are known to be bumpy thanks to the strong waves in the province’s waters.

Batanes' San Jose de Ivana Church was also declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Historical Commission

Just a few meters from Honesty Coffee Shop and facing Ivana Port is the San Jose de Ivana Church. The church’s foundations date back to 1775, and the original church ruins, which used to house the altarpiece, the sacristy, and the baptistery, still stand at the back of the church.

Like its counterpart in Sabtang, the San Jose de Ivana Church was also declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Historical Commission. The church was meant to serve the Ivanans, Sabtangs, and Uyugans.

Sabtang’s settlers were forcibly resettled in Ivana but were later allowed to return to their island, decreasing congregation numbers.

Today remains of the abandoned church can still be seen. It also has a crenelated structure with rare wooden beams. The monastery, part of the church building, has an original circular masonry along the stairway.

Be humbled by the power of Mother Nature as you walk through the Songsong Ruins. A tidal wave ravaged this tiny village in the 1950s; the houses were damaged beyond repair and leaving its residents with no choice but to abandon their town.

At present, a portion of the rows of houses in the village had already been surrounded by high bushes and greeneries. Flowers dot the sides of the house, almost covering its entirety. It’s one of the highly-recommended tourist spots to visit in Batanes.

A handful of the ruins had been restored and occupied by the descendants of the original owners, who now maintain the beauty of the site. Other locals are also returning to some of the habitable ruins on the site.

Although some areas of the barangay had been closed to the public because of possible accidents, most of the sitio is still accessible to tourists.
