How to track American Airlines flight status

Zach Griff

You're sitting at home waiting to hear from your friend or family member about their flight status. Maybe you're on the hook to pick them up from the airport, so you want a better idea of when to leave your house. Or maybe you just want to know if they landed safely. Either way, checking flight status isn't nearly as hard as you might think.

These days, there's a plethora of flight status information available at your fingertips. You can figure out where your flight is coming from , as well as it's current speed and altitude. So, let's deep dive into how to figure out flight status with American Airlines .

American Airlines flight status

Before the coronavirus pandemic, American Airlines was the world's largest airline with more than 900 planes in the AA fleet . Thankfully there's an easy way to check your flight status.

The first thing to do is fire up AA.com or the AA mobile application. You'll then want to navigate to the flight status page. Here, you can search by arrival and departure airports or by the flight number.

american airlines travel locator

If you use the former, you'll get a list of all flights between two cities and if you use the latter, you'll go directly into the flight information for your desired flight. Note that you can get the status for flights departing up to two days from the day you're checking the status.

The flight status results page displays the flight number, as well as estimated departure and arrival times, gate and baggage claim information and the overall status — on time, delayed or canceled .

american airlines travel locator

You can also subscribe to departure or arrival alerts by email or text message, if you'd like to follow a flight closely.

If the flight you're tracking is active (i.e. in the air), you can get a look at where it is on a map by clicking the "Track flight" button on the AA website.

american airlines travel locator

Note that this feature isn't available on the mobile app. However, if the flight you're tracking isn't yet active, you can click "Incoming flight information" to get a detailed look at the status for the inbound plane — both on the website and mobile app.

Tips and tricks to flight tracking

There are some things to keep in mind when tracking American Airlines flights. The first is that AA's flight status information isn't always updated in real-time. I've often found myself waiting to board an 'on-time' flight, even if the inbound flight hasn't yet arrived . That's why it's incredibly important to track the inbound flight.

Also, make sure you have the latest version of the AA app since it'll notify you when boarding actually starts — and when it's time to head to the gate from the Admirals Club .

american airlines travel locator

Likewise, the estimated arrival times can also be inaccurate. Sometimes a flight is given a faster than expected route or landing approach pattern. To better understand a plane's actual status, I always check out FlightAware or FlightRadar24 , and we have a guide to using these advanced flight tracking sites . I find FlightRadar24's stats to be the most accurate, especially for the estimated arrival time.

Either way, both of those sites will give you a plane's speed and altitude, which I find especially useful for the last 30 minutes of a flight.

For example, say that the AA flight status says that a flight's landing at 1 p.m. At 12:30 p.m. or so, I fire up FlightRadar24 and check the plane's speed and altitude. If it's around 30,000 feet (typical cruising altitude), then sure, I'd estimate 30 minutes for an approach to the airport. But, sometimes I'll see that the plane's at 10,000 feet, rapidly descending for the airport. In that case, it could be just another 10-15 minutes before the plane lands — beating the AA flight status estimates.

american airlines travel locator

That's why it makes sense to take a look at both AA's site, as well as one of these advanced tools. Armed with more information, you can better estimate when exactly a plane will arrive.

Bottom line

Checking American Airlines flight status isn't too hard. You can use either the AA website or mobile app to get detailed information, including inbound flight tracking. If you're looking for a more detailed view, I'd recommend checking out FlightAware or FlightRadar24. Either way, now that you know how to track an AA flight, there's no excuse to being late to pick up your family from the airport.

How to Use Airline Flight Credits — So You Never Lose Out Again

H ere’s what you need to know about using flight credits — including the specific rules for Delta, American, and other top airlines.

Fight credits can come in many different forms, but they are usually the result of a canceled flight. Since the ability to cancel or change a flight without fees has become more commonplace over the last few years, flight credits have also become something frequent fliers are dealing with more often.

Using flight credits can be confusing because their terms and conditions aren’t universal — every airline has its own set of rules regarding flight credits. Here’s everything you need to know about flight credits, including how to use them, when they expire, and how to extend them. Plus, we’ll look at flight credit policies from five major U.S. airlines.

What are flight credits?

Flight credits, also referred to as travel credits, are credits received after canceling a flight. They are usually tied to the original ticket, so keep that information handy when you are ready to re-book your flight.

How to Use a Flight Credit

Generally, you’ll be able to book a new flight using a credit on your airline’s website. If your original ticket had multiple forms of payment, you may need to call to complete a booking using a flight credit.

If you booked the original ticket through a travel agency, you’ll need to contact the travel agency to cancel the flight and again when you want to book a new ticket with the flight credit.

What to Know About Flight Credit Expiration Policies

Flight credits usually have an expiration date. While the length of time a credit is valid varies by airline, more often than not, they are good for one year.

Remember that some airlines start the one-year clock when the original ticket was issued, not when the flight credit was generated.  So, if you book a flight and then need to cancel it six months later, your flight credit may only be valid for an additional six months.

Anna Harrison, a travel advisor and owner of Travel Observations, an affiliate of Gifted Travel Network, who is also a member of the American Society of Travel Advisors, always reminds clients of another important factor when considering flight credit expiration dates. “Remember ‘fly by’ dates can be different than ‘book by’ dates,” she stresses.

Check with your specific airline to see if you need to book your travel by the flight credit expiration date or if you actually need to travel by that date. Whether or not you can extend a flight credit after its expiration depends on the specific airline. However, most flight credits can’t be extended after their original expiration date.

Airline-specific Flight Credit Rules to Keep in Mind

Delta air lines ecredits.

Delta Air Lines flight credits are called eCredits, and they can be used toward the payment of any Delta flight, including taxes and fees. Passengers can use up to five eCredits at a time.

Delta eCredits can be generated from an unused or partially used ticket, as compensation for service issues, from ticket exchanges that result in unused funds, or from e-gift certificates.

To redeem your Delta eCredit, you’ll need your 13-digit eCredit number that begins with 006.

Delta eCredits are valid for one year from the day the original flight was booked, and travel must be booked by the expiration date.

American Airlines Flight Credits

American Airlines has three types of travel credits: trip credit, flight credit, and travel vouchers. We’re focusing on flight credits, which are issued for canceled flights or unused tickets. AA flight credits can be used to book non-award flights only. These credits can’t be applied to extras like seat charges or baggage fees .

The flight credit must be used on travel that begins within one year of the original travel date, not from when you cancel the original flight. If you book your flights far in advance, this can leave you with a short amount of time to use the credit.

Reservations using flight credits can be booked online for flights within the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands using the record locator or ticket number of the original flight. For reservations using more than one flight credit or for international travel, you’ll need to call American Airlines to book. American Airlines flight credits aren’t transferable — they can only be used for the person named on the original flight — and they can’t be extended past their expiration dates.

JetBlue Travel Bank Credits

JetBlue flight credits are also called travel bank credits. Travel credits can be used for JetBlue flights, including taxes, the air portion of a JetBlue Vacations package, change fees on Blue Basic fares, and increased flight costs due to a change on a Blue Basic ticket. The passenger name doesn’t have to match the name of the travel bank account holder, so it’s easy to use your JetBlue flight credits for someone else.

JetBlue travel credits can’t be used for any other charges, including baggage fees , Even More Space seats, or pet fees.

To redeem your JetBlue flight credits without a TrueBlue account, you’ll need to create a Travel Bank account. Once you have travel credits, you’ll get 2 emails from JetBlue containing your Travel Bank username and a temporary password, which will allow you to set up an account. If you have a TrueBlue account, you’ll be able to see the amount of your flight credits in the Travel Bank Credit section of your online account.

JetBlue travel credits are valid for one year from the original ticketing date. Unlike many airlines, you only need to book your travel by the expiration date, but travel can be completed after the credit expires. If a reservation made using a JetBlue travel credit is canceled, the credit expiration date will not reset. JetBlue travel credits can’t be extended.

United Airlines Future Flight Credits

If you cancel a United Airlines flight or change to a less expensive itinerary, you’ll receive a future flight credit. In addition to airfare, these flight credits can be used for extras like seat selection when they are chosen during the booking process. Future flight credits can only be used for the person named on the original flight that was canceled or changed.

To use a flight credit, choose your flight on the United website or mobile app as you normally would. During the checkout process, select Travel Credits as your payment method, and any credits you have will be applied to your total. You can combine multiple future flight credits to pay for one transaction, but they can’t be combined with travel certificates.

If you want to combine your future flight credits with PlusPoints, book your flight with the flight credits first, then request a PlusPoints upgrade.

Future flight credits expire one year after the date they were issued, and your travel must begin by that date to use the credit. Credits can’t be extended.

Southwest Airlines Flight Credits

Southwest flight credits, previously called travel funds, are created after canceling a flight or changing a flight to a lower-priced itinerary. They are easy to use online, and they never expire .

These flight credits are tied to your original flight number. When paying for a new flight, look for the payment section labeled Apply Flight Credits, LUV Vouchers, and gift cards . Then, enter the confirmation number from the original flight and the passenger’s first and last name.

If the original flight that generated the flight credit was a Wanna Get Away fare, it’s non-transferable. If the flight credit was generated from a Wanna Get Away Plus, Anytime, or Business Select fare, it can be transferred to someone else.

How to Claim Missing American Airlines Miles

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

One of the most annoying things that can happen in the miles and points game is when you spend the money, take the flight but forget to get credit for your miles. It could be as simple as forgetting to add your frequent flyer number to a flight. Maybe you’re booking through a third party travel site, or you’re not logged into your frequent flyer account when you book, or you simply don’t have one.

Whatever the reason is, all is not lost. In most cases, it’s easy to claim your missing airline miles even after you fly.

If it's American Airlines miles you're missing, here's how to retroactively claim them.

american airlines travel locator

Request missing AAdvantage miles

The American Airlines website has a page dedicated to requesting retroactive mileage credit . To request mileage credit, you'll need your AAdvantage number and your ticket number. The record locator will not be sufficient, you’ll need to look up the ticket number.

american airlines travel locator

The 13-digit ticket number is printed on your ticket and provided in the booking confirmation email, depending on where you booked your flight. If you don’t have your ticket number, you can get it by calling AAdvantage at 800-433-7300.

If you're not yet enrolled in the AAdvantage program this could be a great time to do so .

You can submit your mileage claim as long as it has been at least three days from the completed flight. It can take up to 10 days to credit the miles for an American Airlines flight. Remember, you can receive AAdvantage miles for flights taken on partner airlines. Mileage credit for partner airline flights can take up to 30 days to appear.

Your ticket number can be found on your confirmation email and receipt, receipt from the airport, printed boarding pass or on your credit card statement. The ticket number is 13 characters long and also includes the airline code. The last 10 digits represent the ticket number.

If you don’t see miles credited to your account and it has been at least three days since you completed your travel, you can submit a request to claim the missing miles on aa.com . You will need to have your AAdvantage number and 13-digit ticket number available.

The record locator, confirmation or booking code is a six-character code that’s included on your confirmation email and boarding pass. This is different from your ticket number. The ticket number is 13 characters long and also includes the airline code. The last 10 digits represent the ticket number.

The airline code is the first three digits of your ticket number, which can be found on your confirmation email, receipt provided at the airport or credit card statement.

It can take up to 10 days for American Airlines flights and up to 30 days for flights on partner airlines.

Domestic/Group Contracts - Cart Numbers

To ensure that all flight segments will be properly recorded and credited, you must utilize your Authorization Number (AN) and Cart Numbers (CN), JBID number (IN) as specified in the Group and/or Corporate Travel Agreement. Numbers must appear in the Tour Code Box on all customers’ tickets at time of issuance.

IT BOX shows: IT-C123456A123456  or  IT -IN123456

Note: 14 Characters is the max  regardless  if you suppress the IT or not

When using both a Corporate Agreement Cart Number and Authorization Number it does not matter which is listed first however, the designations of (C) for Corporate Agreement and (A) for Authorization Number must be used with the appropriate number. The Corporate Agreement Number will always be six digits of numeric. The Authorization Number is a six-digit combination of four numeric characters followed by two alpha characters. The Tour Code box is limited to a total of 14 characters. Normal endorsement box inclusions apply, such as  Valid  On  AA Only!

Corporate/Group Contracts - Cart Numbers

To ensure that all flight segments will be properly recorded and credited, you must utilize your Cart Number (CN) and Authorization Number (AN) or JBID (IN) as specified in the Corporate Travel Agreement (CTA).

·           If using a  Corporate  discount both Cart Number preceded by the letter (C) and Authorization Number preceded by the letter (A) or the JBID (IN) must appear in the Tour Code Box

·           If using a Group contract the Authorization Number preceded by the letter (A) must appear in the Tour Code Box

·           If using a Group contract for  Corporate  business both the Corporate Cart Number preceded by the letter (C) for corporate revenue tracking and the group AN number preceded by the letter (A) must appear in the Tour Code box.

Change Fee/ Penalty Information

  • Change fees/penalties may vary by markets and fare basis types. Always consult the fare rules before quoting the change fees/penalties.
  • When booking different fare types that are combinable, be aware that the fare with the most restrictive rules applies. Please note that change fees/penalties are not considered restrictions.
  • Change fees/penalties are published in conjunction with each fare basis. If several different fares are used to construct an itinerary, it is feasible that each leg of travel may have a different change fees/penalty.

·           Check Fare Rules. Change fees vary

·           Once a ticket has been reissued, the new issue date will determine the change fee amount

·           Exchanges in Canada are subject to the 7 percent Canadian Government Services Tax (GST)

A change in the itinerary does not automatically update the electronic ticket record in Sabre. The electronic ticket record should always be updated through the exchange process. Changes made via the GDS/System must be exchanged according to the fare rules.  Please see your GDS/System for ticketing.

Changing or Rebooking Other Airline or American Codeshare (AA*) Segments

Sometimes the transfer of data can get jumbled or lost when canceling and rebooking other airline partner segments or American codeshare segments in the same transaction. To ensure a clean transmission and avoid the possibility of losing the new space, it is best to make changes to other airline partner segments or American codeshare segments in separate steps.

  • Book new segments
  • End and Retrieve the PNR, ensuring the record locator  has  been received back from the other airline
  • Cancel old segments

This will help Sabre and the other airlines system clearly communicate the transaction. If the other airline partner space is limited and you want to guarantee it, book the new segments before canceling the old segments. The important item to remember, regardless of the order in which you cancel and book (or book then cancel) is to  end and retrieve the PNR between steps  and ensure a record locator has been received back from the carrier and is added to the end of the segment. Until the locator is received, the customer is not confirmed in the other airline's system.

Electronic tickets are stored in the American database. American electronic tickets must be validated and plated on AA/001.

  • The itinerary may contain no more than 16 segments of airspace for each ticket. An ARNK  is considered to be  a segment. Open segments are allowed when the itinerary contains at least one confirmed segment
  • Bulk fares are allowed with American e-tickets
  • American accepts up to two separate forms of payment for an electronic ticket.
  • Electronic tickets may be issued up to 2 hours prior to departure

Electronic ticket records can be retrieved in the American database for seven days after the last air segment is flown, or for open or unused tickets, 13 months after the last intended flight date. An error message ticketing record not found will appear after the allotted time expires. To review the various ways to retrieve an electronic ticket see your GDS/System for more information. The External Reservation Handling Charge applies for changes to tickets originally purchased through external ticketing sources, including travel agencies and online booking tools and if the customer ticketed through another airline, including Joint Business,  one world ® , and codeshare carriers. Customers who purchased tickets directly from American Airlines via aa.com, telephone reservations, airport ticket offices and Travel Centers are not assessed the External Reservation Handling Charge. The charge varies based on the country where the itinerary change is  made  or the ticket is issued.

Note: Airport personnel refer to this handling charge as an Airport Service Charge and not an External Reservation Handling Charge. American airport staff will follow the same guidelines for assessing the charge when an itinerary change is made to an external reservation at the airport. Airport (ATO) and Travel Center charges are shown below.

American airport (ATO) or American Travel Center staff will not collect the charge for making seat assignments. There is a charge for making seat assignments directly with American Reservations for tickets purchased through non-American locations.

The charge is applicable on:

  • Voluntary itinerary changes processed by American Reservations centers and at airport ticket offices (ATO) and American Travel Centers (TC) for U.S./Canada/U.K./Europe point of sale tickets originally purchased through traditional travel agencies, online travel agencies and other airlines, including  one world and codeshare partners

The charge is not applicable on:

  • Tickets purchased from American via aa.com, American Reservations and ATO/TC locations
  • Involuntary itinerary changes,  i.e.  schedule changes and off-schedule operations
  • Customers ticketed using a government or military fare

Frequently Asked Questions:

1.      Why is American charging this charge? This charge applies to reservations that were originally sold by third parties and is reflective of the handling required in changing an externally created reservation.

2.      Does the charge apply to AirPass transactions? No. While AirPass reservations may be booked by travel agencies, they are queued to American for ticketing. Since agencies do not issue the initial ticket, the charge does not apply.

3.      Does the charge apply to Same Day Confirmed Flight Change transactions? No. Same Day Confirmed Flight Change transactions must be handled by American Reservations or at airport self-service machines or ticket counters, so the charge does not apply.

4.      Does the charge apply if American revalidates rather than reissues the agency ticket? Yes. The charge applies to voluntary changes, regardless of whether American revalidates or reissues the ticket.

5.      Once American reissues the ticket, will the charge apply to any subsequent reissues? No.

6.      Does the charge apply to tickets purchased on aa.com? No. The charge does not apply to tickets purchased directly from American, via aa.com, American Reservations, or ATO/TC.

7.      If American changes the itinerary, will the charge apply? No. The charge applies to voluntary changes and will not be applied when American has a schedule change or cancellation.

8.      Does this charge replace the ticket change charge? No. Customers who wish to change and confirm their itinerary must follow the applicable fare rules and pay any associated change charges and add collects, in addition to the External Reservation Handling charge.

9.      If the travel agency is closed, will American waive the charge? No. The charge is based on the type of transaction involved and is independent of the agency hours of operation. Customers may choose to wait to speak with their travel agent.

10.    Will the charge be assessed separately on the customer's credit card statement? If the change is made via American Reservations, the charge will be assessed separately. For changes made at the ATO/TC, the charge will be included in the total amount charged to the credit card.

11.     Will American accept an agency MCO as form of payment for the charge? Currently, no. Agency issued MCO’s are not an acceptable form of payment by American Airlines.

American maintains its list of Interline e-Ticketing agreements in each GDS. Please refer to your GDSs' IET agreements table to learn which airlines may be included on a 001/AA ticket.

As a reminder, American Airlines prohibits the marking up of published fares and/or change fees for the purpose of producing and collecting the travel agency's service fee. In addition, agencies may not issue published fares as "BT" or "IT" tickets.

Agents must strictly adhere to American's instructions, rules, regulations, conditions of sale, and tariffs.

When agents charge a service or other fee for the services that it provides to customers or compensates its customers, such charges, fees (including any discounts) and compensation shall be listed separately from American’s fare information, so that the components and calculation of the final sale price is clear to the customer (e.g., the fare as published by American must always be separately displayed).

The Department of Transportation has clearly stated that a misrepresentation by a ticket agent "as to fares and charges for air transportation or services in connection therewith" is an "unfair or deceptive practice or unfair method of competition". Violations are subject to civil penalties up to $2,500 USD for each violation.

Travel agencies that markup published fares or change fees for the purpose of collecting their agency service fees will receive a debit memo  for the amount of  the markup. Your compliance with our policy is appreciated.

ARC accredited agencies may use ARC's travel agency service fee (TASF) program to collect their service fees.

Detailed information regarding the TASF program is on ARC form number 111. See the ARC website  www.arccorp.com   for ordering instructions. IATA accredited agents should see  www.iata.org   for information on IATA's TASF program.

In an effort to  assist our valued agency partners, it is critical to understand the importance of not having multiple valid tickets (open/OK coupon status) for the same flight(s) and/or origin destination in a passenger's PNR.

To prevent having multiple tickets in a PNR, the agency should consider the following:

  • Void -  if within the applicable ticketed window, VOID the ticket and issue a completely new ticket
  • Reissue/Exchange  - if the ticketed fare allows changes, reissue/exchange the ticket for the  new itinerary,  rather than issue multiple tickets within the same PNR
  • Refund  - if the ticketed fare is refundable, issue/process a refund and then issue a completely new ticket. This can be done in the existing PNR or in a new PNR containing the updated itinerary. Either way, this avoids having multiple "live" tickets for the same customer and same flight in the airline's e-ticket database

If there is more than one valid ticket that exists for a passenger's flight AT TIME OF CHECK-IN, the airline's automation systems will not know for certain which coupon is intended for use. This is true whether check-in takes place on-line, at an airport self-service machine (Kiosk) or in person with an actual agent. To ensure the correct coupon is lifted every time, simply choose any one of the 3 recommended options we've listed. Let's illustrate what we mean, using the following scenario.

Having two tickets associated to the flight segments 03MAR23 UIOMIATPA for the passenger. There is a very good chance the ticket coupons 3 & 4 (UIOMIATPA) of the  first ticket issued  0017777777777 in the PNR may be lifted by the airline system.

The same would apply if a refundable ticket was issued and changes made. The original refundable fare ticket should be refunded prior to issuing a new ticket or prior to the flight departure date would be preferable. Refundable tickets may be reissue/exchange for the new itinerary/fare . Return to top

Banned From Russian Airspace, U.S. Airlines Look to Restrict Competitors

Because of the war in Ukraine, U.S. carriers have to take the long way on flights to and from Asia, giving an advantage to foreign rivals flying the same routes.

Delta airplanes on the tarmac of an airport with a city skyline in the background.

By Kate Kelly and Mark Walker

WASHINGTON — Unable to fly through Russian airspace because of the war in Ukraine, U.S. airlines are stepping up a lobbying campaign on Capitol Hill and at the White House to address what they say is a growing problem: They are losing business to foreign competitors who can take passengers between the United States and Asia faster and more cheaply.

Effectively banned from the polar routes that save time and fuel between the United States and an array of destinations on the other side of the world, U.S. carriers say they are being forced into an aeronautical version of Twister to get passengers where they want to go without taking undue risks.

They have altered trans-Pacific flight plans to ensure they would have somewhere to land in an emergency, reduced passenger and cargo loads to hold down costs as they fly longer distances, and put on hold more than a dozen planned new routes to Mumbai, Tokyo, Seoul and other cities.

On its route from New Delhi to New York City, American Airlines has been forced to stop flights in Bangor, Maine — an hour and a half short of the mark — on 19 occasions, a person familiar with the recent history said. Those stops, which were typically caused by unfavorable winds or weather that depleted the jet fuel supply and ran out the flight crew’s duty hours, delayed passengers and forced a swap-out of 14 pilots and flight attendants.

Those flights were already operating with dozens of the seats deliberately left unfilled, the person added, because less weight on board was required to make the fuel last as long as possible.

Yet many foreign airlines are not banned from flying over Russia, U.S. airlines and their lobbyists say — and are winning more passengers on routes to and from the United States as a result. Continued access to the shorter and more fuel-efficient routes that Russian airspace provides is giving carriers like Air India, Emirates and China Eastern Airlines an unfair advantage, the industry lobbying group Airlines for America said in a recent presentation on Capitol Hill.

Airlines for America estimated the lost annual market share of U.S. carriers at a collective $2 billion per year.

“Foreign airlines using Russian airspace on flights to and from the U.S. are gaining a significant competitive advantage over U.S. carriers in major markets, including China and India,” the presentation, dated February, said. “This situation is directly to the benefit of foreign airlines and at the expense of the United States as a whole, with fewer connections to key markets, fewer high paying airline jobs” and a dent in the overall economy.

U.S. airlines for years had access to Russian airspace through a series of agreements with Moscow. In exchange for that access, they — and other foreign airlines — paid fees to the Russian government for air traffic control support that amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars per year, according to an airline official and an industry advocate.

But after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year prompted government officials in the United States, Britain, Canada and Europe to ban Russian aircraft from flying over their airspace, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia immediately prohibited the United States and other supporters of Ukraine, including Canada and much of Europe, from flying through his skies.

Now airlines are pressing the White House and Congress to fix the problem by subjecting foreign carriers from nations not already banned from Russian airspace to the same restrictions applied to U.S. airlines, effectively forcing them to fly the same routes as their American competitors.

The Biden administration should “take action to ensure that foreign carriers overflying Russia do not depart, land or transit through U.S. airports,” said Marli Collier, an Airlines for America spokeswoman.

The proposal appears to have gained traction with the Transportation Department, which recently drafted an order that would ban Chinese carriers that fly passengers to the United States from flying through Russian airspace, according to three people who were briefed on the order. The order was presented to a group of Biden administration officials, including members of the national security team, on Monday, two of those people said, and has been under consideration this week along with other proposed policy measures.

Transportation Department officials declined to comment. But national security officials are mindful of the potential diplomatic consequences of steps aimed at a longtime ally like India, or of adding further tension to the already strained relationship with China.

A spokesperson at the State Department, which is involved in an interagency government review of the airspace issues, said the department was aware of the concerns and regards the safety of U.S. citizens on foreign soil as a top priority.

“It’s just unfortunate for our air carriers that this has been a collateral issue,” said Manisha Singh, a former assistant secretary for the bureau of economic and business affairs at the State Department who now runs a consulting firm in Washington. “I think we should do anything we can,” she added, noting that the United States should “be careful” before taking steps that might offend foreign countries and affect U.S. tourism and commerce as a result.

Representatives for Delta, American, and United Airlines, the domestic carriers most involved in the lobbying effort, referred questions to Airlines for America, which praised a recent letter by Senate Foreign Relations Committee members to Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoing the group’s talking points.

“When foreign airlines overfly Russian territory, even if they do not expect to land on Russian soil, they run the risk of unplanned diversions in Russia for safety, medical, mechanical or more nefarious reasons,” wrote Senator Bob Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, the panel’s chairman, and Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, its senior Republican. The State and Transportation Departments have not yet responded to the letter, according to someone who has been briefed on the exchange.

Representatives for Air India declined to comment, and representatives for Emirates and China Eastern did not respond to requests for comment.

Arjun Garg, a former chief counsel and acting deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, said the Biden administration has the legal authority to remedy the complaints from U.S. carriers.

Mr. Garg said both the safety concerns the airlines have flagged and the way in which the current regulations have disadvantaged them are serious dilemmas.

“The foreign air carriers get the benefit of shorter flight times, lower costs, less fuel consumption, all those kinds of advantages that are shut off for U.S. carriers by order of the U.S. government,” Mr. Garg said.

At a time when U.S. fliers are already fed up with fundamental issues like cramped seats, flight cancellations and a cascade of service fees, access to Russian airspace may not be the most pressing worry. Depending on winds, air traffic and other factors on any given day, on a 14-hour flight, avoiding Russian airspace can mean less than an hour of extra flying time in some cases. But it can also mean more than two hours.

But the cost differential is notable. As of Wednesday, the outbound leg of an April round-trip journey from New York’s Kennedy Airport to New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport cost about $1,500 and was estimated at 13 hours and 40 minutes on Air India, according to Travelocity. The most comparable flight on a U.S. carrier: a $1,740 American Airlines trip with estimated flying time of 14 hours and 55 minutes.

But Airlines for America and the major carriers it represents are also highlighting security concerns for Americans who fly over Russia, even on foreign airlines. And history suggests there is cause for anxiety.

In 2014, a Malaysia Airlines flight was shot down over Ukraine , killing 298 people. A Dutch court later convicted, in absentia, two Russian separatists and a pro-Russia Ukrainian with murder.

In 2021, a Ryanair flight from Greece to Lithuania was diverted to Belarus , a close Kremlin ally, after officials in that country alerted air traffic controllers to a supposed bomb threat on the plane. Their true purpose, U.S. prosecutors said , was to arrest a dissident journalist who was a passenger by inventing a false safety issue. (The journalist, Roman Protasevich, was recently put on trial in Belarus, and the officials who the Justice Department says organized the diversion have been indicted in the United States and charged with conspiracy to commit airline piracy.)

Last year, the American basketball star Brittney Griner was detained at an airport near Moscow and later sentenced to nine years in a penal colony for carrying vape cartridges of hashish oil in her luggage. She was freed in December .

There are also operational challenges stemming from the longer routes being flown by U.S. carriers.

Delta Air Lines has redrawn trans-Pacific flight maps repeatedly to comply with both U.S. regulations and the Russian overflight ban, according to internal documents and two people familiar with the changes.

F.A.A. rules require that for long flights, commercial planes must always be within 180 minutes of a suitable airport in case an emergency landing is needed (with certain aircraft, which Delta flies, it can stretch to 207 minutes).

But without access to Russia as an emergency stop, Delta’s Detroit-to-Shanghai flights are now being forced to fly near obscure Pacific landmasses like Shemya Island southwest of Alaska. And if the tiny Shemya airport is too full to handle an emergency landing, Delta pilots must divert to an even farther-flung airport like the one on Midway Atoll in the middle of the Pacific, these people said — adding up to an hour and 40 minutes and more than 3,000 gallons of fuel to the journey when the closer stops are not available.

“You can sometimes think of it as a little bit of an obstacle course,” said Jim Higgins, an aviation professor at the University of North Dakota who flew as a commercial pilot for seven years. Federal regulation around emergency landings, while well-intentioned, he added, “does increase the operational complexity.”

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Kyiv is aiming to build its own weapons to bring the fight to Russia, signaling a potential boom in domestic weapons production . Whether that can be done in time to alter the trajectory of a war that would be more tenuous without U.S. military aid remains to be seen.

Ukraine’s troop-starved brigades have started their own recruitment campaigns  to fill ranks depleted in the war with Russia.

The Czech Republic froze the assets of two men and a news website  it accused of running a “Russian influence operation” in Europe.

Symbolism or Strategy?: Ukrainians say that defending places with little strategic value is worth the cost in casualties and weapons , because the attacking Russians pay an even higher price. American officials aren’t so sure.

Elaborate Tales: As the Ukraine war grinds on, the Kremlin has created increasingly complex fabrications online  to discredit Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, and undermine the country’s support in the West.

Targeting Russia’s Oil Industry: With its army short of ammunition and troops to break the deadlock on the battlefield, Kyiv has increasingly taken the fight beyond the Ukrainian border, attacking oil infrastructure deep in Russian territory .
