Star Trek: Prodigy

  • View history

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that premiered on 28 October 2021 , first on the streaming service Paramount+ , then on Nickelodeon , [1] a conglomerate sister broadcasting channel. It is the ninth Star Trek spin-off and the third animated Star Trek series, following Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks . Unlike the previous animated series, this is the first to be rendered entirely with computer-generated imaging and 3D modeling. Previously, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " The Girl Who Made the Stars " was produced in a similar fashion. Two seasons were produced before the series' cancellation on 23 June 2023 .

Alex Kurtzman stated that unlike Lower Decks , Prodigy will be kid-focused with an " entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone, " adding, " What's exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what's the different tone, but what's the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they're entirely different? " [6]

In February 2019, it was announced Nickelodeon had entered talks to air the show, and Trollhunters writers and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman had boarded the project. [7]

On 24 April 2019 , it was revealed that the series would indeed air (but not debut) on Nickelodeon and focus on a group of lawless teenage characters finding a derelict Starfleet ship which they use to " search for adventure, meaning and salvation. " [8]

In May 2019, CBS filed trademarks for the titles " Star Trek: Section 31 " and " Star Trek: Prodigy ", with posts on Reddit later in the year attaching the Prodigy title to the second animated series. [9]

On 23 July 2020, it was revealed that the show would, in fact, be named Star Trek: Prodigy , and that it would air on Nickelodeon in 2021. [10] [11] The premiere episode did air on the channel on 17 December 2021, but on that occasion it was an one-time-only affair. [12] It was eventually announced that the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) would belatedly air regularly on a repetitive basis on the broadcaster in the home market one year later, starting on 8 July 2022 . [13]

In 2022 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Series" in the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards , and won the Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design." [14]

In 2023 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for a Television Critics Association Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming," a category with both animated and live action content intended for family and young adult audiences. [15]

Development

In July 2019 , the Hagemans announced the full writers' room for the show. [20] Among those revealed to be writing the series are Trollhunters writer-producers Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt , The 100 writer-producers Shawna Benson and Julie Benson , Black Sails writer Lisa Boyd , Shades of Blue writer Nikhil Jayaram , and Diandra Pendleton-Thompson .

In October 2019 , Kurtzman said that this series will be animated in a digital 3D style, like Ninjago or Trollhunters , as opposed to the more "cartoon" look of Star Trek: Lower Decks . He also confirmed that the series had been picked up for a two-season order, and that a title had been chosen for the series, but he was not yet ready to reveal it. [21]

In the same interview, Heather Kadin said that, due to the time-consuming process of 3D animation, the series would likely air later than 2021 . Kadin also emphasized that the Hagemans' writing style will be accessible to kids without patronizing them or alienating their parents:

" The reason we went to the Hagemans is because if you've seen their work, you know that they're not writing " Muppet Babies ". It's not "Little Spock and Little Kirk." It's not playing down [to viewers] that way. " " Even [with] their characters in Ninjago – they are teenagers – I was able to watch that with my kids and they write with a very epic quality. They tell stories the way we tell stories in live action: serialized, turning over cards… " " I think it will be a great way for fans to introduce the franchise to their kids, and for new fans to be formed, because it's such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid. " [22]

In an October 2020 interview with Trek Report , producer and writer Aaron Waltke said that Prodigy aims to bridge the gap between old and new iterations of the Star Trek franchise , with a series that strikes a tone of hope and idealism. [23]

" It's been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. Writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago. " [24]

In February 2021 , it was announced that Prodigy would debut on Paramount+ in 2021. An image of the alien bridge crew was also released. [25]

On First Contact Day in April 2021 , the Hagemans revealed that the series will be set in the Delta Quadrant in 2383 . They also revealed an image of Captain Janeway as she will appear in the series, and explained that the character will appear as an emergency training hologram on board the starship. A new summary of the series' premise was also released:

Prodigy " will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. " [26]

In May 2021 , more details about the cast were released, with the main voice cast revealed. [27]

On 23 July 2021 , a teaser trailer was released during the Paramount+ Star Trek Comic-Con@Home panel, revealing the first animated footage of the series along with the first look and name of the vessel, the USS Protostar . [28]

The series' opening title sequence was publicly released on 31 August 2021 , as part of a Paramount+ presentation to the Television Critics Association . This presentation also confirmed that the series' theme music had been composed by Michael Giacchino , and the music for the series would be composed by Nami Melumad . [29]

Star Trek Prodigy - Meet the Cast

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson indicated that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from this series, [30] though that intent was thwarted by the company's bankruptcy on 5 August 2022.

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories," and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard . [31]

On 18 August 2022 , it was announced that two new tie-in books, Supernova (also the title of a video game releasing in October 2022 ) and A Dangerous Trade would be released on 17 January 2023 . [32]

Cancellation and pick-up

On 23 June 2023, Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+. While Season 2 was allowed to finish post-production, it, along with the series as a whole, would be sold to any interested third-party outsider. [33] The series removal from Paramount+ was effectuated three days later, on 26 June 2023. [34] The series was on Nickelodeon already on a broadcast hiatus, and therefore not to return afterwards. [2]

Paramount did not provide a clear reason for the completely unexpected cancellation. News sites such as TrekMovie.com , ScreenRant, and Inverse suggested that the cancellation was motivated by cost-cutting measures and tax write-offs, whereas Paramount itself had intimated in a statement to TrekMovie.com that it was part of clearing the way of the upcoming merger of Paramount+ with Showtime by " refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers ". Paramount concurrently assured TrekMovie.com that it remained stoutly "invested in growing the Star Trek franchise". The decision to place Prodigy outside the realm of that same franchise and offer it up to third-party outsiders however, was counter to their " Star Trek Universe" all-under-one-roof franchise umbrella concept instituted at the start of 2021 . [35] [36] [37]

On 21 July 2023 , showrunner Aaron Waltke announced on his Twitter account that the entire first season had become available for digital purchase at digital vendors like Prime Video , ITunes Store , Google, and others. Up until that point only the first ten episodes had been available, which was conforming to the recent physical PRO Season 1, Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray home video format releases. [38] While the franchise had intimated that the series had not performed to expectations, Prodigy had managed in the meantime to gather a fanbase of its own, which had resulted in a run on the DVD and Blu-ray stocks still available at retailers at the time of the cancellation announcement, causing them to sell out quickly in the home market. [39]

Aside from that, this fanbase also tried to organize an online campaign to save the series. [40] On 24 August 2023 , in an effort to find the show another home, a fan raised US$1,200 on GoFundMe to have an airplane tow a banner reading, "#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY" over the Los Angeles offices of streaming services Netflix , Amazon Prime , and Hulu . [41] A drawing with the same hashtag is set to be among the items going to space on a Blue Origin (part of the empire of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ) flight. [42]

Kevin Hageman expressed in an interview that his desire was to see a third season come to fruition, that will eventually lead up to an animated film series. [43]

On 11 October 2023 , it was Netflix that announced that they had picked up Prodigy , with season two set to premier in 2024 , [44] [45] after season one had debuted on the streaming service later in 2023 on 25 December. [46] [47] A consequence of this is that if Hageman is to see his hopes for post-season two productions come true, he has to convince Netflix to pay for the entirety of the production costs, as the franchise itself has distanced itself from Prodigy . [3] This could turn out to be a tall order for Hageman, considering Netflix's prior experience with the first three seasons of Discovery (see: Netflix: Footnote ), despite Prodigy hardly having caused any division within " Trekdom ", if any at all, as opposed to Discovery .

Where prodigy fits in the star trek timeline.

Star Trek: Prodigy brings back Captain Janeway with an all-new crew. Here's where the latest animated show is canonically set in Star Trek's timeline.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Prodigy Episodes 1 & 2 - "Lost & Found".

Here's where Paramount+ and Nickelodeon's new animated series Star Trek: Prodigy fits in the Star Trek timeline. Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy introduces an all-new cast of teenage alien heroes - Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui), Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas), Zero (Angus Imrie), and Murf (Dee Bradley Baker) - as the crew of a Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar. However, this ragtag group is mentored by the training hologram of Star Trek: Voyager 's Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) .

Captain Janeway headlining  Star Trek: Prodigy is the biggest proof that the animated series is part of the franchise's canon and that it's set in the Prime Universe, as opposed to the Kelvin timeline of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek  films.  Star Trek: Prodigy 's initial setting is the mining colony world of Tars Lamora, which is set in the Delta Quadrant which the flesh-and-blood Captain Janeway explored in  Star Trek: Voyager.  However,  Star Trek: Prodigy's  showrunners indicated that the USS Protostar will eventually venture into the Alpha Quadrant, the vast territory of the United Federation of Planets. It's understandable if Trekkers assume that Star Trek: Prodigy is part of the Kelvin timeline since the animated series is action-packed like J.J. Abrams' S tar Trek movies and features a score by Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino, which sounds a great deal like the music he composed for Star Trek 2009 , Star Trek Into Darkness , and Star Trek: Beyond .

Star Trek: Prodigy is set in the year 2383, although this isn't obviously stated in the show's two-part pilot, "Lost & Found." This canonically places Star Trek: Prodigy in the 24th century of Star Trek's prime timeline years after the combined events of Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager, and the four TNG movies. Specifically, Star Trek: Prodigy is set five years after Captain Janeway brought the USS Voyager home to Earth after the starship spent 7 years lost in the Delta Quadrant. Star Trek: Prodigy  also happens four years after Star Trek: Nemesis when Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) died and Captain William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) took over the USS Titan. Star Trek: Prodigy  additionally occurs about 2 years after its fellow animated series , Star Trek: Lower Decks , which began in 2380 while Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 takes place approximately a year later in 2381.

Star Trek: Prodigy 's 2383 setting also means the animated series brushes up closely to key events referenced in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek: Picard season 1, which was primarily set in 2399. Star Trek: Prodigy 's events happen around the time the Romulan sun goes supernova in the 2380s, which altered the course of the Alpha Quadrant. Ambassador Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) attempt to stop the Romulan sun's supernova with red matter in 2387 resulted in Spock and a Romulan starship commanded by Nero (Eric Bana) to time travel to the 23rd century, which caused the accidental creation of the Kelvin timeline .

Spock's attempt to save Romulus was the result of how, in 2385, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) led an ill-fated rescue mission to rescue the Romulan people from the supernova before Picard quit Starfleet in protest over the Federation abandoning the desperate Romulans. A First Contact Day attack on Mars orchestrated by the Romulan sect called the Zhat Vash also occurs in 2385 and this leads to a ban on artificial lifeforms in the Federation that lasts for 14 years until Picard helped uncover and stop the Romulan conspiracy at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 1. With its 2383 setting, Star Trek: Prodigy is nestled between pivotal happenings in Star Trek's late 24th century and the animated series is bound to create exciting Star Trek history of its own.

Star Trek Is Facing A Fanbase Challenge – But There's A Hopeful Future Ahead

Star Trek: Picard bar

One of the more persistent conversations that has buoyed several decades worth of nerd conversations is the old "Star Trek" vs. "Star Wars" saw . Do you, dear reader, prefer stern diplomacy, mechanically inclined stories, ethical dilemmas, and constant reference to classic literature of the Western Canon? Then "Star Trek" is for you. You may, however, prefer fable-like tales of derring-do, heroic space-bound violence, and archetypal myths of good vs. evil. If you like your sci-fi to have an ancient flavor and fantastical elements out of King Arthur, then you may prefer "Star Wars."

Which one is better? The answer, of course, is "Star Trek." But which one is more successful and widespread? Frustratingly, the answer is "Star Wars." "Star Trek" has long been more successful on TV, telling hour-long morality tales and pushing up against low budgets. It was about multiculturalism and equality. "Star Wars," meanwhile, got its mileage from simple tales of violent victory, massive budgets, and enormous event films that make billions. "Star Trek" may contain enormous ideas, but "Star Wars" is merely enormous.

In an interview with Variety , the makers of "Star Trek" also admitted they find themselves facing a new problem. Not only did they have to acknowledge that they'll never be as huge as their sci-fi cousin, but their fan base is aging out. One can indeed haul old actors out of mothballs and use them to appeal to the 40-to-70-year-old fans who watched "Star Trek" for decades — see: most of "Star Trek: Picard" — but that, it seems, isn't gathering a new generation of Trekkies. Younger viewers, it seems, aren't constantly jumping on board with new "Star Trek" shows, no matter how hip or expensive they are.

The Deadly Years

"Star Trek," despite its cultural ubiquity, has always been something of a niche interest. It is a cerebral, technical, philosophical, and intellectual series. Sure, it had more than its share of ridiculous stories (Allamariane, "Spock's Brain," so much pain), but at its heart, it appealed to engineers and lit enthusiasts. "It's not the largest fan base," executive producer Akiva Goldsman told Variety. "It's not 'Star Wars.' It's certainly not Marvel." It never has been, however much Paramount would like it to be.

"Star Trek" had a taste of a younger audience in 2009 when J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise to feature a younger, sexier cast. Abrams' 2009 film was the most successful movie "Star Trek" had ever seen up to that point, and it seemed for a moment that high-octane action was the future; gone were the nerdier days of diplomatic contemplation. That high-octane mode of thinking bled into subsequent "Trek" TV shows, leading to programs like "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard." However, as modern as these shows were, they weren't scooping up a newer audience; it was old-school Trekkies who were tuning in out of curiosity.

This was confirmed by "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor and prolific franchise director Jonathan Frakes . Variety asked Frakes how many people have approached him about the new "Star Trek" shows that've released since 2017. His reply was bleak:

"Of the fans who come to talk to me, I would say very, very few. 'Star Trek' fans, as we know, are very, very, very loyal — and not very young."

"Star Trek" needs the youth vote, and that is key to the franchise's future.

Courting the youth vote

CBS President David Stapf backed up Frakes' statement, saying:

"There's a tried and true 'Trek' fan that is probably going to come to every 'Star Trek,' no matter what it is — and we want to expand the universe."

But how is the franchise going to do that? Its first attempt will be to extend the Kelvin timeline films into a fourth chapter. When "Star Trek Beyond" — the thirteenth "Star Trek" movie and the third in the rebooted Kelvin-Verse — disappointed at the box office, Paramount seemingly put that corner of the franchise to bed.

It appears, however, that the subsequent "Star Trek" TV shows haven't been giant hits either, so, in apparent desperation, more movies are in the works. Steve Yockey ("The Flight Attendant") is currently writing a "final chapter" movie for the Kelvin timeline . Meanwhile, Toby Haynes is attached to direct a separate film that's described as an origin story for the entire "Star Trek" franchise . Haynes might be known to some readers as the director of the "Star Trek" spoof episode of "Black Mirror" titled "USS Callister." Will another Kelvin timeline film draw in a fresh audience? Will either of these films make over $500 million the way the 2009 "Star Trek" movie did (assuming they come to pass)? Only time will tell.

The franchise's primary creatives are also developing a "Star Trek: Discovery" spinoff called "Starfleet Academy," set at the titular sci-fi college where all starship officers graduate. "Academy" will follow a new cast of youthful characters in the 32nd century, and the series has ordered an enormous set to be built, the largest in "Star Trek" history. It will be the second show in "Trek" history to feature a mostly under-20 cast, the first being the animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy."

Shows about young people, for young people

Both of the above ideas, however, are based on a fallacy commonly made by showrunners: that kids only want to see shows about their peers. If "Star Trek" was about younger people, the thinking goes, then younger people will tune in, right? "Star Trek," however, has always been about older characters. Here's my personal (and yes, very specific and opinionated) pitch: The central appeal is that the main characters are mature and well-formed, some of them with unbreakable codes of ethics or command styles they formed many years ago. The franchise is about thoughtful professionals who are good at their jobs, and Trekkies like to see them ply their skills with aplomb. Youthfulness is antithetical to "Star Trek." We don't want to see someone grow up. We want to see them already grown up. This is one thing (among others) that "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" does so well.

The exception to this is "Prodigy," a series about a group of teens in a distant part of the galaxy unfamiliar with Starfleet. When they find an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar, they are introduced to Starfleet ideals for the first time and learn to grow up with principles. Someone needs to tell the franchise's creatives that they already have their "youth" program ... Oh, wait. It was canceled. (Although Netflix tossed it a lifeline .)

I will hereby offer them the solution, free of charge: don't make more "Star Trek," and don't make younger "Star Trek." Make good, serious, cerebral, thoughtful, slow-moving "Star Trek" that appeals to nerdy kids. The ratings will be lower than you want, but I assure you, you'll be creating a new fanbase that will stick around for decades.

And there will always be nerdy kids. Which means there will always be "Star Trek."

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences and follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

“Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman and co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman. “We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”

“I've always held that the Star Trek fan base is among the strongest and most intelligent in the world. They have shown their collective passion, and we’re happy to be able to celebrate Prodigy once again,” said Kate Mulgrew, voice of Admiral Janeway.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 2 sows the seeds of seasonal plot threads (Under the Twin Moons recap)

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 2

So, as you will have gathered from watching Star Trek: Discovery's episode 1 of season 5 ,  it would appear that the primary plot is based on a past episode of "The Next Generation" (TNG). Yes indeed, no new "Star Trek" show is safe from nostalgia — and very specifically — TNG-era nostalgia. Any storyline, from any previous incarnation of " Star Trek " could've been used, but it cannot denied that it feels like we're being given what Terry Matalas and the other executive producers who are still obsessed with living in the past want, which is to relive their teens.

The thing is, there's nothing wrong with TNG and if you watch the episode that all of this seems to be stemming from, "The Chase" (S06, E20) it's actually a pretty good installment. And in fact, it has a " Babylon 5 " quality and uses dialogue and straightforward set pieces to tell an interesting, nuanced story. (Aside from at least from one significant plot hole that is not explained.) But that was then — April 1993, to be precise — and this is now. And while it might have been fun to revisit this in a TNG-era movie for example, this ship really has passed. If you're need a refresher on how to watch Star Trek: Discovery, you can check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus .

The episode "The Chase" is a fun explainer as to why all the humanoid aliens look the same. Obviously, it's all to do with budget in the real world, but in the Star Trek universe it's because a super-advanced race of aliens — unofficially referred to as Progenitors — opted to scatter different parts of our DNA across the galaxy, which when fully evolved over millions of years time, came to form humans, Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans and the rest. When DNA strands from all of these races are combined, it unlocked a ancient holographic message.

Related: 5 things Star Trek: Discovery season 5 needs to fix

"Life evolved on my planet before all others in this part of the galaxy. We left our world, explored the stars, and found none like ourselves. Our civilization thrived for ages, but what is the life of one race, compared to the vast stretches of cosmic time?" the unnamed humanoid alien said. "We knew that one day we would be gone, that nothing of us would survive. So, we left you. Our scientists seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds, where life was in its infancy ... The seed codes also contained this message, which we scattered in fragments on many different worlds. It was our hope that you would have to come together in fellowship and companionship to hear this message."

The potential of this was pretty big, but it was never followed up. It was rumored there might even be a connection to the Changling race and it was talked about in chat groups ... 15 years ago . And while this was a certainly an opportunity left open-ended, ready to be revisited after having been found by writers scrambling for ideas, it's also interesting to note that "The Chase" was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who as we know, is still very much involved with Nu-Trek.

Back to "Discovery" season 5, episode 2 and possibly the biggest single, burning question is, will Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) met a death as utterly pointless as Captain Shaw, Huw and Cristóbal Rios? And now with Captain Saru (Doug Jones) leaving the USS Discovery and Raynor taking his place as first officer, Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) now at least has an antagonist close by for this adventure.

This second episode feels a little less lost than the season premiere, although it relies rather heavily on the classic bureaucracy trope, something, you'd have to believe we'd really been able to get past in the 32nd century. Guess not. Staying with Rayner though, if his appointment to become the new First Officer of the USS Discovery just turns out to be another underused, Tarka-style antagonist, it will be a spectacular missed opportunity. But, "Discovery" does keep us guessing, that much is certain. Who'd have thought an socially awkward alien would cause all the dilithium in the galaxy to explode ?

There are some interesting set pieces in this episode, but let's hope we don't dwell on the whole breadcrumb-trail to alien artifacts theme too long. Also, where the blazes does the energy and the matter come from to instantly form replacement phasers? Just wonderin' like. But, on the plus side, Grudge is back and so is Zora.

In other "Star Trek" news, production on the new "Star Trek: Section 31" television movie starring Michelle Yeoh has started principal photography. Paramount Plus posted a pic on Instagram and Variety released a still. In addition to Yeoh, the cast includes Omari Hardwick ("Powers"), Kacey Rohl ("Hannibal"), Emmy Award winner Sam Richardson ("Ted Lasso"), Sven Ruygrok ("One Piece"), Robert Kazinsky ("Pacific Rim"), Humberly Gonzalez ("Ginny & Georgia") and James Hiroyuki Liao ("Barry").

However, the most interesting news is that the story appears to be set in the "lost era" of "Star Trek" — between the events of the Kirk-era movie, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and the TV series TNG. Arguably the most underused and interesting field of opportunity within the "Star Trek" franchise...and Kacey Rohl ("Arrow") has also joined the project as a young Rachel Garrett, the future captain of the USS Enterprise-C, from the epic TNG episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" (S03, E15) where the character was previously portrayed by Tricia O’Neil.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on Paramount Plus in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on Paramount Plus in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

The Progenitors from the TNG episode "The Chase" (S06, E20) could provide a plot backdrop for this season

Zoe Saldana Is Still Holding Out Hope For ‘Star Trek 4’

It’s time again to continue the cycle on the sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond . Last week it was reported the long-gestating project has yet another writer , and right on queue we have one of the stars of the Kelvin movies weighing in on where Trek goes next on the big screen.

Ready for another wonderful Trek experience

Zoe Saldana is out promoting her new movie Absence of Eden , due in theaters next week. Naturally, she gets questions about some of her iconic roles including playing Nyota Uhura in 3 Star Trek movies. In an interview with The Playlist’s Discourse podcast , the actress remains optimistic about returning to Trek, saying:

“I still have hope. I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team.”

Saldana’s desire to return to her Star Trek role is in contrast to the MCU. In the same podcast interview, she confirmed she has no intention of returning to the role of Gamora, although she hoped the Guardians of the Galaxy series continued, possibly with Gamora being recast.

Zoe Saldana as Uhura in Star Trek Beyond (Paramount Pictures)

Screenwriter Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ) is reportedly taking on the latest draft of the Beyond sequel.  As reported last week, Paramount has multiple Trek films in development, with a new “franchise origin story” which may be further along than Star Trek 4 . Saldana acknowledged the complicated logistics of bringing the Kelvin crew back together while also launching this new movie:

“I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on ‘Star Trek,’ which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

Unlike the Star Trek 4 project, the origin story movie already has a director ( Andor’s Toby Haynes) and a script (from Seth Grahame-Smith of The Lego Batman Movie ). Reportedly it is on track to start filming by the end of this year. Paramount has yet to put a Star Trek film on their release schedule and 2026 (the 60th anniversary year of Star Trek ) is coming up fast.

I don’t blame her for wanting to do another, particularly so if it was a pleasant experience with the rest of the cast and crew. Ms. Saldana, like the rest of her castmates, seems pretty clear eyed that they shouldn’t be turning down real work on the possibility there “might” be another Trek movie in their future.

When Simon Pegg chimes in that it’ll be mind blowing, then we’ll know it’s not happening.

I guess trying to line up all those schedules is really making it more difficult than everyone ever thought. 😊

LOL at “When Simon Pegg chimes in that it’ll be mind blowing, then we’ll know it’s not happening,” as that is so true.

She was short changed in Beyond for Bele/Lokais love child

I doubt that would’ve happened in Orci’s ST3

Er……. huh?

Just a little joke..

Reminded me more of CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR makeup … and i’ve never even seen the movie!

He means Jayla.

Aww, nobody remembers the black-and-white cookie? Look to the cookie, Elaine. Look to the cookie.

better hurry, these actors are starting to get gray hair

Lol Pine already had grey hair in Beyond.

Maybe he’ll dye his hair jet black to match Shatner in TMP

And add a BradyHawaiiCurl?

Feel sorry for this cast. They fit their roles perfectly and ST09 was a great reboot. I watched it recently and was actually surprised at how good the movie was. Better than I remembered.

But ST:ID effectively torpedoed this crew’s run. A four-year gap. Ruining Khan (to the point that the fanbase doesn’t even want ST to go there again). Special Khan blood. Tribble experiments. Carol Marcus strip scene for no reason. Third ST film in a row with a big OP villain ship. It was just…bad.

Beyond wasn’t a bad movie, but it could not get the ship back on track. Not sure if a ST4 could do any better. What could they possibly do on the back of these three Kelvin movies, that would bring in at least $400m B.O. (assuming a $150m budget).

A real shame. There was genuinely a lot of potential for the Kelvin timeline after ST09, but it was wasted.

Yep this series had so much potential back then and it was quickly squandered by the second movie by a really horrible script and a four year wait. And by the time they got to the third it really showed how directionless things truly were with the Orci firing and just truly bad marketing with Beyond. Add to the other problem a lot of hardcore fans were put off after STID and new fans had mostly moved on by then that movie’s fate was probably written after that first infamous teaser trailer.

And eight years on it’s all just been a complete waste of time with silly announcements and still no movie in sight.

Originally I really did want at least one more movie with this cast but I have stopped caring long ago. And I suspect a large number of others feels the same way now. I don’t even see the point of trying to make another one since they already stated it will be the last anyway and they want to go another direction with new films back in prime universe. Just put all your money and effort on that since clearly we’re not talking about the MCU here.

It’s been so long, I don’t even know how you would sell another Kelvin movie to a general audience.

It would have to be a stand alone project in that universe.

We’ve been over this many tines but I 100% believe it was the Orci ST3 falling apart is what caved in the film franchise , had we had Shatners return (as OG Kirk), and the canon event shattering plot of the new timeline under threat, and maybe some Klingons & Romulans (and potentially Nero/USS Kelvin cameo stuff tied back to ST09) .then the 3rd film might well have made more BO (the magic 500m?) and we’d be waiting on kelvin ST6 about now

Imo STID wasn’t as damaging as some make out, general audiences actually liked that movie , just some angry hard fans didn’t like the alt universe take on TWOK and ‘white khan’ (bc Benicio Del Toro turned it down so we got the comic book spin off about him getting Die Another Day DNA treatment lol)

You’re right. I believe STID obviously made money, hence the ST: Beyond sequel.

I didn’t have a problem with them bringing back a Kelvin version of Khan at all. Plus, it’s Benedict Cumberbatch, he’s great!

What I didn’t care for is the white-washing and obfuscation of Khan. He was Indian, not a white guy. Like the first film, they had to have a comic book series explain the discrepency.

Also, you add Carol Marcus (now with an English accent and in Starfleet, but you don’t really do anything with her and Kirk, except show that there’s some obvious attraction? Why bother with her then? Just to add sex appeal with Alice Eve in the film? Anyway, Abrams admitted they messed up some of the writing on STID. That said, STID is much better than The Rise of Skywalker. That script had holes galore and I just do not think it was a worthy end at all for the Star Wars Saga. I think they really dropped the ball there and it’s such a shame.

Actually, my biggest problem with STID was when the Enterprise was suddenly going to crash into the Earth. As a mission design guy, that still really bothers me.

We don’t need a trek movie every two years.

I would welcome a quality Trek film every two or three years. Emphasis on the word ‘quality.’ Not a remake, no ‘reimaginings.’ And get away from recasting Kirk and Spock over again. Enough already. Write an original film that respects the past. Do better.

I agree with all of this.

I had the impression that when ST09 failed to hit super blockbuster status, Abrams et al . just sort of saw it as a second tier franchise. Worth doing another one for sure, but not worth putting it on the front burner.

Except it did hit blockbuster status, beating Terminator, XMen and the Da Vinci sequel that summer

The problem is they were probably expecting at least $500 million at the time. Still enough to justify another one but yeah.

Back in 09 400m ww was considered a healthy BO take

But it didn’t make $400 million it made $385 million. I’m not trying to split hairs but it goes to the point it did JUST ENOUGH to keep making them but the hope was the next would do better, MUCH better. It did better but not certainly much better either and with a budget that was $40 million more.

I always go back to Nolan Batman movies. The first one actually did a bit less than the first Kelvin movie did and they both had the same budget. Then TDK came out 3 years later and it literally did a billion dollars and with a budget of $185 million…. five million less than STID.

That’s probably the kind of thing Paramount was hoping would happen with the sequels. Maybe not a billion dollars but you’re certainly not spending that kind of money just to do under a half a billion either.

Transformers first film was also made for $150 million and that made $750 million out of the gate.

That’s the kind of money they were probably hoping to get by the second or third one because that’s the type of money real blockbusters make. $385 million is decent but still nothing you keep making movies for with those budgets.

Im sure Par were rubbing their hands expecting around 600-700m for ID after the glowing response 09 got from moviegoers, fans, critics.. Must’ve been abit dishearting when it ‘just’ did 470m and maybe took the wind out the sails for the big anniversary

It was the lame ‘Beyond’ sequel that torpedoed the Kelvin movies. ST09 and STID did huge business, ST09 is one of the top selling blu rays of all time. Both had lucrative deals for the TV premiers too.

Beyond cost a staggering $200 mill, and it isn’t up on the screen. And, Beyond had lame competition in the form of Ghostbusters. ST09 and STID held their own against tough competition like Terminator Salvation (that franchise hadn’t been ruined yet).

Had Beyonds budget been 100-120 million, it’d be no worries to make another.

I knew something was up with Beyond when my old mates (who really weren’t Trek fans but had seen ST09 and ID at the cinema and were raving about how awesome they were) didn’t bother to go see it.. It was as if they were like meh we’re not bothered now ,(I remember one texting me about how awful the trailer looked in front of Star Wars VII saying it was trying to be like Fast & Furious with rock songs and motorbike stunts!) so yeah Beyond suffered from that terrible initial trailer (in front of the generational event of the real SWs return), and maybe how the next trailer seemed abit inconsequential/looking abit Insurrectiony/for trekkies only, (unlike all the impressive 09/ID trailers that appealed to all movie goers/fans alike),

also that summer each movie seemed disappointing so when ST came out audiences were abit burned out by lame sequels/remakes like XMen, GB, Bourne, Tarzan, ID:R etc (then again even more reason for Beyond to succeed had it been really good, whereas it was just considered another abit meh/for trekkies only). And yes in comparison 09/ID did have lots of tough competition and still did well, ST09 had XMen:Wolverine, Angels&Demons, Terminator 4 (which although was directed by McG and PG13 was the future war movie and starred Christian Bale hot off The Dark Knight!),in fact ST beat them all domestic and worldwide was only beat by A&D. likewise ID had Fast 6, Iron Man 3, Superman, World War Z as competition yet still did well considering

I bought the STID dvd only because I’ve bought all the Trek films. All the while knowing it makes a nice beer coaster.

150 mil or 165 mil budget, need 2.5 to just break even, that puts breakeven over 400, and doesn’t even count advertising, or the considerable cost of holding the finished film over for something like 6 months past its original release date to get it out in summertime. box office numbers don’t mean jack if you spend too much and 09 cost over twice as much as any previous film (tho if you count inflation, it maybe cost less than TMP’s 45 or so mil.)

Numbera IMO you have summarised the handling of the the Kelvin film series post the 09 reboot perfectly. I also thought it a shame that such potential was wasted.

IMO the only way the Kelvin TOS crew comes back for another movie is a Generations 2.0 type movie that reboots the TNG crew into their own movie franchise set in the Kelvin timeline. i’d actually be interested in a Kirk/Picard crossover movie done right / better. Tom Hardy as Kelvin timeline Picard would be my pick….him and Pine would be great together

This only reminds me how weird those Beyond posters made the actors’ faces look. Mannequin on the Move!

They should have one about both Gary Mitchell and Nomad.

It’s been too long, time to move on. This is the longest drought of Star Trek movies in theaters since the first one in 1979 (8 years since Beyond, the previous record was the 7 years between Nemesis in 2002 and JJ’s Trek in 2009). But we did have a lot of Star Trek on P+ since then, so it doesn’t feel so bad.

I am ok with just another re-boot. Perhaps with new characters set during the Romulan Wars or something.
