  • Make sure you have Zotero installed  on your computer, then open Zotero
  • Open Safari
  • In the menu for the browser, click on the  Safari  menu >  Settings  (may show as Preferences ) >  Extensions
  • Click on the checkbox next to the Zotero extension
  • Finally, click on the  Turn on button to activate

Your Zotero extension should now be enabled for Safari. You will be able to tell that it's working if you see a document or Zotero symbol in the top right of the URL bar in Safari . You will need to keep Zotero open while you are using the browser extension so it can communicate with the program.

If the above step do not work, you may have privacy settings set up in a way that prevents Safari from activating the extension. If you see a privacy prompt, click on the OK button, then quit Safari and re-open. You will need to repeat steps 2 - 4, then click on the  Turn On  button for the extension to be activated.

Additional help

Additional documentation, along with more instructional videos, is available at Zotero's web site .

The Library sometimes offers workshops on Zotero and other citation management tools. We will do so "on demand" if a minimum of 5 students will be in attendance. You can also email questions to Jennifer Dorner at the Social Research Library,  David Eifler at the Environmental Design Library, or Lisa Ngo at the Engineering Library.

What is Zotero and why would I use it?

Zotero is a tool that collects, manages, and cites the sources you find during your research. In addition to saving a citation, you can add notes and images in your Zotero library and in many cases automatically download PDFs.

You can use Zotero to...

  • Create and organize a personal database of references
  • Import references automatically from many websites and library E-resources
  • Format bibliographies in your papers

Why choose Zotero over another tool, like RefWorks or Endnote?

  • Your Zotero library is saved locally and though it is possible for you to create a cloud space and sync your citations, it requires you to adjust your settings on every computer you use Zotero with. If you do your research and writing mostly on one or two computers, Zotero is a great option.
  • Zotero can be used offline -- an internet connection is not necessary to work with your Zotero library.
  • Learning to use Zotero is easy

Where do I find Zotero?

Download Zotero from  https://www.zotero.org/download/

Instructions on download page

1. Download the Zotero application for your operating system. If you plan to use Zotero with a word processor, close all word processing applications before running the installer.

2. When installing the Zotero connector, the option you are given depends on which browser you are using to access the page. In the example above, I used Chrome to access the Zotero site, so it prompted me to install the Chrome connector.  Connectors are also available for Firefox and Edge. Use those browsers to access the Zotero page if you want to install their connectors. You can add as many connectors as you want -- they will all connect to your Zotero application.

Note : The Zotero Connector for Safari is bundled with Zotero 6.0. After opening Zotero 6.0 for the first time, you can enable it from the Extensions pane of the Safari preferences. The Zotero Connector for Safari requires Safari 15 on macOS 11 Big Sur or later. If you experience issues with the Safari connector, check out the documentation on the Zotero website.

Getting Started with Zotero

Zotero provides the ability to save references from many library catalogs and article databses with one click. Your Zotero library allows you to organize and edit the entries.

The three panes of the Zotero client

Collections: The left column shows My Library, which contains all the items. Clicking the button above the left column creates a new collection, a folder into which items relating to a specific project or topic can be placed.

Below that is the tag selector, where tags assigned to items can be added or removed.

Items : The items pane displays a list of all the items in each collection with icons that indicate the type of item (book, article, thesis, screenshot, etc.).

Item Details: This pane displays the bibliographic information that was imported by Zotero for each item. Each field can be edited. There are also options to add additional notes, attachments, links to the original sources, tags, and subject headings.

Installing Zotero is easy, but it's important to note that it happens in two parts: the desktop application and the browser extension. To install both, go to zotero.org/download .

  • Download the desktop application installer  (on the left), open it, and follow the prompts.  Make sure that Microsoft Word is closed during the Zotero installation. If not, the Zotero Word plugin may not install correctly.
  • Important: You will have to open the download page in each browser you may want to use and install the extension in each browser separately. (The Zotero extension works in Firefox , Chrome , and Edge , as well as in other Chromium-based browsers.)
  • Also good to know: In Safari , the browser extension is automatically installed when you install the desktop application. To activate it, go to the Safari preferences > Extensions > toggle the Zotero Connector to on.

To make sure that the installation worked properly , check the following:

  • On your computer, do you see the Zotero icon (a red Z) in your start menu (on Windows) or in your Applications folder or Launchpad (on MacOS)? If yes, you're good to go. If not, re-run the installer.
  • How to troubleshoot issues with the Zotero Connector extension for Chrome.
  • How to troubleshoot issues with the Zotero Connector extension for Safari.
  • How to troubleshoot issues with the Zotero plug-in for Microsoft Word  (on Zotero.org).
  • How to troubleshoot issues with the Zotero integration for Google Docs  (on Zotero.org; you may need to look at the Zotero Forums to find an answer to your specific issue).

You can start using Zotero out of the box, as is, but here are a few configurations we'd like to recommend:

Create a Zotero account (and sync with the cloud)

A Zotero account allows you to

  • sync your local Zotero library on your computer into the cloud, which is great if you need to switch computers or if you work on multiple computers simultaneously;
  • collaborate and share libraries with other Zotero users;
  • store unlimited files in the cloud, as long as you use your Harvard email to register for the account.

To sign up for a Zotero account , simply go to the registration page , fill out and submit the form, wait for the confirmation email and click on the confirmation link it will contain, and you should be good to go.

Next, set up syncing :

  • Open your Zotero app.
  • on Windows, in the Edit menu;
  • on MacOS, in the Zotero menu;
  • on iOS, go to Settings [the cog symbol in the top right corner], then Account.
  • Note: If you're concerned about storage space on your hard drive, set the two dropdowns under "file syncing" to "download files as needed."

Finally, we recommend adding an additional email address to your Zotero account as a failsafe, especially once you leave Harvard.

  • Go to your account settings on Zotero.org (make sure you're logged in!).
  • Enter another email address in the field below your already registered email.
  • Wait for the email sent to the newly added address, click on the confirmation link contained in it.
  • Refresh the account settings page to double-check that you now have a second email listed.

Other recommended tweaks

  • In the General tab, uncheck "Automatically tag items with keywords and subject headings." This setting will allow you to create and maintain your own tags instead of creating unwanted clutter. [ more information on tags ]
  • In the Cite tab, open the Word Processors tab & check the box next to "Use Classic Add Citation dialog." This setting allows you to view your Zotero library and collections the same way you see them in the desktop app when you insert citations in Word or Google Docs . [ more information on using the Word and Google Docs plugins ]
  • In the  Advanced tab, open the dropdown under "OpenURL," go to "North America," and then select Harvard. In the resolver field, you should now see the following URL: https://hollis.harvard.edu/openurl/01HVD/HVD_URL? . This setting allows you to search for the full text of a citation using Harvard Library subscription resources. [ more information on locating online versions of citations (on Zotero.org)]
  • Also in the Advanced tab, change the Zotero language to English if your computer is set to another language.

Getting Zotero: Installing Firefox extension.

To install the Zotero extension in your Firefox browser, visit http://www.zotero.org and click the big red Download button.

If your pop-up blocker is enabled, you may see a yellow bar at the top of your browser telling you that Firefox has prevented the site from installing software. Click Allow

A software installation window will open. Click Install Now. You will need to restart your browser for the changes to take effect. If your installation was successful, you will see the Zotero logo in the lower right hand corner of Firefox.

Zotero Standalone is a separate software download that is not tied to the Firefox browser. Standalone has connectors that work with Safari and Chrome browsers as well as Firefox.

You can not have Zotero in Firefox and Standalone open at the same time.

You must have Zotero Standalone open to use the Chrome and Safari capture icons. If you don't you will just be redirected to Zotero's website.

You do not have to install the word processor plugins with standalone. The plugins are bundled with the software download.

To install the Zotero Standalone software visit http://www.zotero.org/download/ .  You must have administrative privileges on your computer to download the software. Click on the link for the correct operating system and follow standard procedures for installing software on your computer. Zotero Standalone comes with word processor plug ins, so you will not need to install these.

Links to install the Chrome and Safari connectors are found just below the Standalone download links.

Chrome Connector - A box will appear in the lower right hand corner of the browser asking if you want to continue. Click Continue. Then click Install when Chrome asks if you want to install.

Safari Connector - Depending on your settings Safari may not automatically open the file. Use Control+ Click and select "Download linked file to..." to save the file to your desktop or some other easy to remember location. Double click the file to open. Click Open, then click Install. The Safari capture icon will show up as a little box to the left of the address bar.

Getting Zotero: Word Processor Plug-in.

An additional word processor plug-in is needed to insert and format citations in Microsoft Word or Open Office documents when using the Firefox extension.  Which plug-in you install depends on your operating system and word processing program.      To find and install the right plug-in and extensions for your word processor, visit http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation

Once you have successfully installed the plug-in, you will see the Zotero citation tools right in your word processor.

Here is an example of what the Zotero plug-in looks like in Word 2007.

Getting Started

Zotero is a free option for citation management and is cited as the citation manager of choice by many librarians. This is not just because it is a not-for-profit citation manager originally created by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, but it is also a flexible and well-supported system with features such as:

  • A community-based support model of user-supporters who contribute to a forums site and respond to questions quickly as a community
  • Ability to add bibliographic items via numerous methods including a web import tool, import of BibTex, RIS, and other file types, a lookup for DOIs, PubMed IDs, ISBNs, and arXiv IDs
  • Tools for organization including tags, libraries, folders, subfolders, and related items
  • Integration with word processing tools including Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice
  • Public and private group libraries for sharing citations and content
  • A robust search capability within your library

Downloading Zotero

1.) Visit the Zotero homepage,  https://www.zotero.org/ , and click the "Download" button in the center of the screen.

Download Zotero Visual Screenshot

2.) To have the full functionality of Zotero, download both components from this page. The website should be able to sense what system and browser are used. The system will automatically guide you to download the components needed for the browser and system used. If you require other download packages Linux, Windows, and Mac are available. Browser connectors are available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Zotero download visual screenshot

3.) These steps will prompt the download of an executable file (.exe), run that file, and open up Zotero to ensure success.

Browser Connector

To ensure the success of the Zotero browser connector, you may need to restart the browser. Here are examples of where your Zotero connector should be in each of the browser types. You only need to have one of the browser connectors, but having more will not interfere with processes. It's recommended to add the browser connector on your most frequently used browser.

The browser connector is a small icon that resides near your URL bar. This icon will light up and take on different icons when various item types are recognized during your web browsing and searching. As an example, here is a Google Scholar search , this search when brought up in any browser will turn into a folder icon. The folder icon represents that there are multiple items on the screen which you may want to add to your library. In contrast, when looking at the homepage of Google Scholar , the icon should be inactive.

While in the inactive mode, clicking on the icon will save the current location as a webpage in your Zotero library. The webpage will be somewhat limited in what types of data it can pull. When searching web databases, it may take a few moments for the icon to recognize the content in the browser and become active.

As of January 2020, the Safari Connector is in Beta. To add it, download the Zotero beta and in your Safari browser, enable the extension by navigating to Safari >> Preferences, and turn on the Zotero extension. Because this version is in beta, it may be glitchy at times - it's recommended to also add the extensions in another browser as a backup.

Creating an Account

Once Zotero is downloaded, the next step is to create an account.

1.) Open the register website and create an account. You'll get an email that you need to confirm before your account will be active.

Zotero Registration Visual Example

2.) Once you've confirmed your account, click on your Zotero desktop application. Navigate in the top menu to Zotero >> Preferences. Once the preferences window is open, click on the "Sync" icon across the top of the preferences window. This is where you'll enter the username and password created in step 1.

Zotero preferences visual example

3.) Once you are signed in, several options will appear in the "Data Syncing" window. These include:

  • Syncing automatically
  • Syncing full-text content
  • Library specific file syncing

It's good to consider how you manage your workflow when deciding whether to enable these options. Syncing automatically may be good practice if you are usually connected to the web when using your library. Syncing full-text content is going to allow you to access PDFs and other attachments across multiple computers, but also has the limitation of 300mb of storage for free. More storage can be purchased from Zotero at a yearly rate. If you are planning to have private group libraries for sharing PDFs and other documents, you must have the storage enabled for those libraries.

Known Issue: UT Chrome Profiles & Zotero Connector

The academic version of Google Chrome is very restrictive in the add-ons you can enable, and unfortunately the Zotero connector is not one of the few enabled add-ons. We recommend considering the following options as a solution:

  • Use a personal Google Chrome profile , that is not affiliated with UT. To enable this, you may need to delete your current iteration of Chrome and redownload. You can still access all of your UT items including your email and drive storage.
  • Use another browser for research activities. Firefox works quite well with Zotero.

The Zotero Connector for Safari is bundled with the Zotero application. In other words, unlike for other browsers, it is not necessary to install the Zotero Connector extension separately.

Even though the Safari extension is installed automatically, however, it is not automatically activated in Safari. To do so, follow these steps:

  • Open Safari.
  • From the Safari menu, go to Preferences.
  • Select the Extensions tab.
  • In the list on the left, check the checkbox next to the Zotero Connector.
  • The Zotero icon should now display next to the URL box (usually to the left of it).

Developing/Structure

For the main readme on Zotero Connector architecture see https://github.com/zotero/zotero-connectors

This Connector is built using the Safari App Extension framework. To allow for code reusability across Zotero Connectors the extension closely follows the architecture existing in the Chrome and Firefox connectors. Scripts related to translation (and Google Docs integration when appropriate) are injected into each page via by specifying them in Info.plist under the SFSafariContentScript key. The injected scripts communicate to the background page via message passing.

Background page

The background page in the App Extension consists of 2 parts:

  • The "as intended by Apple" Swift class SafariExtensionHandler , which handles messages from the injected scripts, button and context menu interactions, file system access, cross-origin HTTP requests, and passes on messages to the JS background page.
  • The JS background page ported from the previous Safari extension, which contains most of the extension handling logic, such as orchestrating prefs and i18n strings, managing translators, issuing button icon and label, and context menu updates. It is created via the JavaScriptCore framework in the entry-point static class GlobalPage .

New Features for Chrome and Safari Connectors

We are excited to announce major improvements to the Zotero Connectors for Chrome and Safari.

The Zotero Connector for Chrome now includes functionality that was previously available only in Zotero for Firefox.

Automatic Institutional Proxy Detection

Many institutions provide a way to access electronic resources while you are off-campus by signing in to a web-based proxy system. The Zotero Connector for Chrome makes this more convenient by automatically detecting your institutional proxy. Once you’ve accessed a site through the proxy, the connector will automatically redirect future requests to that site through the proxy (e.g., if you open a link to jstor.org, you’ll be automatically redirected to jstor.org.proxy.my-university.edu).

Notification bar at top of webpage: Zotero detected that you are accessing www.jstor.org through a proxy. Would you like to automatically redirect future requests to www.jstor.org through proxy.my-university.edu?

Proxy detection does not require manual configuration. You can disable or customize it from the connector preferences.

Style Installation and Automatic File Importing

Zotero for Firefox has long included support for installing citation styles and importing reference manager files such as BibTeX or RIS when opened in Firefox. This functionality is now supported by the Zotero Connector for Chrome.

Dialog box: Add citation style to Zotero?

Clicking on a link to a CSL file will display a prompt to install the style into Zotero. Clicking on a BibTeX or RIS file that is served correctly by the website will prompt to import its data into Zotero. If you choose ‘Cancel’, you can download the file normally.

Note that this feature requires Zotero 5.0.

If you have the latest version of Chrome installed, you should be automatically updated to version 5.0.5 or later of the Zotero Connector. If you’re not currently using Zotero with Chrome, you can install the extension from the downloads page . Make sure you’ve installed Zotero 5.0 as well for the best experience.

We’ve brought several features to Safari that were previously available only in Chrome and Firefox.

Streamlined Saving

Previously, on pages where Zotero could not detect any high-quality data, the Zotero save button was inactive, and you could save a basic webpage item and snapshot by right-clicking on the page and selecting “Save Page to Zotero”. In the latest version of the Zotero Connector for Safari, it’s possible to save any page to Zotero with the click of a button.

Tooltip when hovering over save button that says 'Save to Zotero (Web Page with Snapshot)'

When high-quality data is available, the button will show the same icon as before: book, newspaper, etc. On all other pages, you’ll see an empty page icon, and clicking on it will create a basic webpage item and snapshot in Zotero. Hovering over the icon will tell you which translator , if any, Zotero would use to save the page.

One-click PDF saving

You can also now save PDFs to Zotero with a single click.

Tooltip when hovering over save button that says 'Save to Zotero (PDF)'

Previously, saving a PDF to Zotero from Safari required dragging from the address bar into Zotero or saving the PDF to disk and adding it to Zotero manually. Now, when you’re viewing a PDF in Safari, simply click the toolbar button to save the PDF as a top-level attachment in Zotero, after which you can use “Retrieve Metadata from PDF” or “Create Parent Item” to create a full bibliographic item. Note that, when possible, it’s still preferable to save from a webpage with full metadata.

Secondary Translators

A larch that he planted himself still grows in the garden, so it’s more than 250 years old. At the time of its foundation, it was a garden with herbs and medicinal plants and was used as an educational center for doctors. Today there are the orangery with its tropical palms, the carp pond, and the immense trees that dot the landscape and turn wonderful golden shades in the autumn. Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

Greenhouse of Botanical Garden

Main Botanical Garden of The Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest and most famous is Moscow. The garden is a real museum of nature with a very rich (more than 18000 types) collection of plants. The park was founded in 1945 at the place of the 17th century Apothecaries’ Gardens. The garden’s collection is turned into botanical expositions, made with use of modern receptions of landscape architecture. Here you can see a tree nursery, a shadow garden, hothouse complex, collection of flowers, a rosary, exposition of coastal plants, garden of continuous blossoming, Japanese garden and expositions of cultural plants and natural flora plants. The biggest part of Garden is the Tree nursery occupying the space of 75 hectares. About 2 thousand wood plants grow here. Another big exposition of the Garden is nature Flora, divided into six botanic-geographical collections: European part of Russia, Caucuses, Central Asia, Siberia and Far East. Pride of the Main Botanical Garden is the collection of tropical, coastal and water plants, which is considered as the best in Europe. The Japanese garden, a great model of Japanese landscape gardening art has a 13-level stone pagoda of the 18th century, stone Japanese lamps, ponds, falls and streams, tea lodges and more than 100 species of the most character Japan plants. It is especially decorative in spring, during Oriental cherry blossoming and in fall, when foliage blazes in crimson colors.

Moscow historic parks

Historic nature parks and estates once were the mansions of the Moscow aristocracy. At that far times the estates were outside the Moscow city limits, but after the city expansion and urbanization, they became easily accessible.

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

Safari extension does not appear in preferences

  • adomasven March 30, 2022 Did you run Zotero at least once after reinstalling it?
  • ecologist0 March 30, 2022 Yes and it did not help. I also installed other extensions to see whether it helps but still no.
  • adomasven March 30, 2022 It's hard to say what's causing this. macOS is responsible for detecting Safari extensions bundled with apps and adding them to Safari preferences. It could be some OS config or some other app you have installed interfering. You can try repeating the delete, restart, redownload and reinstall once again just in case, otherwise try creating a new macOS user account and check whether it works there.
  • ecologist0 March 30, 2022 None of those helped. think the only solution is to wait for an update to fix it? Anyway, thanks for trying to help. I don't understand why Safari always has to be problematic for Zotero...
  • dstillman March 30, 2022 Because Apple switched to a buggy, proprietary system that requires browser extensions to be bundled with apps, instead of distributed directly like every other browser. We believe Apple improved this somewhat in Big Sur, and the next version of Zotero will limit the extension to running on Big Sur and later. If you're able to upgrade, you should try that.
  • ecologist0 March 30, 2022 Well thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, at the moment, I have to use this desktop. Well, I have a dirty solution. I just installed Zotero Beta and it worked. I can see the extension on the preferences section. I tried to re-install normal Zotero just to see whether if it changes anything but when I switched to normal release it disseppeared again. I have no idea why. For the moment, I am going to use beta version on the desktop. I hope it doesn't cause any problem when there is a db update in the beta.
  • dstillman March 30, 2022 Oh, sorry, I forgot that we already rolled that change out in 6.0.4. So the extension will only appear on Big Sur or later now. We're leaving it available for older macOS versions on the beta, as it has been for a couple years, but we don't feel comfortable leaving it enabled for older versions in the release version due to the instability across app updates.
  • ecologist0 March 30, 2022 Oh, so it is normal that it doesn't appear in Catalina? I see. I mean I am sure you have your reasons. I am glad that it is at least solved now. Just one more question. Would it create a problem for me to use beta on one Mac, release version on another? I read somewhere in the forum that sometimes you push big db updates on beta. Would that create a problem with my files?
  • dstillman March 30, 2022 No, that's perfectly fine. Occasionally there might be a new feature on the beta that's not yet supported on the release version, causing some data temporarily not to sync, but that's it.
  • ecologist0 March 30, 2022 Great to hear. Thanks a lot.

Moscow concert attack: More than 60 reported dead; ISIS claims responsibility

This live blog has ended. For the most recent updates, please click here .

What we know about the Moscow concert attack

  • Men in camouflage broke into a Moscow concert hall and opened fire, shooting an unknown number of people, Russia’s prosecutor general said.
  • The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility but did not provide proof of the claim, which was made on ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.
  • Russia's Investigative Committee said that more than 60 people are dead after the attack at Crocus City Hall. Officials have said more than 100 others were injured.
  • A fire also started inside Crocus City Hall, a large concert venue northwest of central Moscow. Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building and efforts are underway to rescue people from the roof, Russian emergency officials said.
  • Russia officials said they were investigating the attack as a terrorist act.
  • A popular rock band was scheduled to play what appeared to be a sold-out show at the venue, which has a maximum capacity of more than 9,000 people.

Three children among those killed, state media reports

Three children were among the more than 60 people killed in yesterday's attack at Crocus City Hall, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Health.

Officials have warned that the death toll connected to the deadly incident may increase as the investigation continues.

Xi sends condolences to Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday after a deadly shooting at a concert hall near Moscow, saying China opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns terrorist attacks.

China firmly supports the Russian government’s efforts to maintain national security and stability, Xi said, according to CCTV state television.

Moscow bloodshed comes two decades after some of worst attacks in Russia

zotero safari extension

Phil Helsel

The shooting attacks in Moscow are the latest in a series of deadly terror attacks in the country since the 2000s.

In 2004, militants from Chechnya and elsewhere took hostages at a school in Beslan in southern Russia.

The militants demanded a withdrawal from Chechnya. Hostages were kept in a gymnasium, and 334 died — half of them children — when gunfire and explosions erupted when it was stormed. Hostages’ families were critical of the rescue operation. Russian prosecutors later cleared authorities .

Two years prior, in 2002, Chechen separatists attacked the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and took more than 700 people hostage. Russian forces used gas, and 129 hostages died. The attackers were killed.

More recently, in 2017 a suicide bomber from Kyrgyzstan killed 15 people as well as himself in an attack on a St. Petersburg subway. In 2013, two bombers killed a combined 34 people in attacks on a railway station and a trolleybus in Volgograd.

The group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday at the Crocus City Hall venue.

Putin wishes victims well, deputy prime minister says

President Vladimir Putin is thinking of those injured in today’s attack and thanked doctors, a Russian government official said according to state media.

State media TASS reported that “Putin wished all those injured in the emergency at Crocus City Hall to recover and conveyed his gratitude to the doctors, Golikova said,” referring to Tatiana Golikova deputy prime minister for social policy, labor, health and pension provision.

More than 60 dead, and death toll could grow, Russian agency says

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Saturday that more than 60 people have died in the attack, and warned the number may increase.

smoke fire terror attack

“The bodies of the dead are being examined. It has been previously established that more than 60 people died as a result of the terrorist attack. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase,” according to the Investigative Committee, which is a federal state agency.

Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the security agency FSB are continuing to investigate, the committee said in a statement, and weapons and ammunition have been found.

U.S. warned Russia about planned terrorist attack in Moscow, NSC says

zotero safari extension

Monica Alba

The United States shared information about a potential terrorist attack in Moscow with Russia’s government earlier this month, a spokesperson for the National Security Council said.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and said it was monitoring reports that extremists might attack large gatherings in Moscow.

“Earlier this month, the U.S. Government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts — which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia,” NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

Putin recently dismissed ‘provocative’ warning about potential attacks

In remarks that aired three days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of “provocative statements” about potential terror attacks in Russia, and dismissed them.

Putin Russian Election Moscow

“I’ll remind you of recent, let’s say directly, provocative statements of certain official Western structures about potential terror attacks in Russia,” Putin said.

“All of this looks like obvious blackmail and an attempt to intimidate, destabilize our country,” he said before the state security agency FSB.

Putin in those remarks did not specify a country or warning. The U.S. embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds .

“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours,” the U.S. embassy warned.

Guards at concert hall didn't have guns, state news says

The Associated Press

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported.

Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

U.S. had been gathering intelligence that ISIS could attack Russia

zotero safari extension

Ken Dilanian

The U.S. had been gathering intelligence for months that ISIS could mount a mass casualty attack in Russia, two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News.

That information led to a March 7 warning issued by the U.S. embassy in Russia about possible extremist attacks, including at concerts, urging people to stay away from large gatherings, one of the officials said.

That official said the claim of responsibility today by ISIS appears to be genuine, though no final assessment had been made about who was responsible.

Some Moscow concertgoers filmed events as they unfolded Friday night, when gunmen opened fire inside a theater and people ran to take cover in fear for their lives.

Witness says gunfire was first thought to be construction noise

A witness to today’s armed attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall told a state news agency that they first mistook the gunfire for sounds of an installation being dismantled.

“First, we started hearing typical loud pops, but it was impossible to understand that they were gunshots. We thought that something was falling, as exhibitions were being dismantled at that moment, and someone seemed to be dropping something large,” Mikhail Semyonov told TASS .

“Then, the bangs were getting more and more frequent. Suddenly, there was a scream, and the bangs started to be heard as bursts. Then it became clear that it was shooting,” he said.

ISIS claims responsibility for attack but does not provide proof

The terror group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack in Moscow.

The group, also known as ISIS, did not provide any proof of its claim, which came from ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.

The group’s members have carried out a number of terror attacks, including the 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Children among the victims, Russia's children commissioner says

zotero safari extension

Yuliya Talmazan

Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, said children were among the victims of tonight's attack.

"Information about their condition is regularly updated," Lvova-Belova said on Telegram. "Any additional assistance will be provided immediately."

She later told Russia 24 TV channel that at least two children had been injured, including one boy with a gunshot wound.

Earlier, Russian officials released a preliminary casualty toll of at least 40 people dead and more than 100 injured.

France, U.K., Germany condemn attack

Officials from France, the U.K. and Germany were among those who expressed their condolences to the victims of the attack at the Crocus concert hall.

"The images of the terrible attack on innocent people in Crocus City Hall near #Moscow are horrific," Germany's Foreign Office said on X . "The background must be investigated quickly. Our deepest condolences with the families of the victims."

"We condemn the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow," the U.K.'s embassy in Russia said . "This is a terrible tragedy."

Meanwhile, France's foreign ministry called for "full light" to be shed on "these heinous acts."

Public events across Russia called off after attack

Several regional leaders across Russia, including in the annexed Kherson region of Ukraine, have canceled public events this weekend over security considerations after the deadly concert attack in Moscow.

Shortly after the attack, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all sports, cultural and other public events in Moscow this weekend. State news agency TASS also quoted Russia's cultural ministry as saying that mass and entertainment events in federal cultural institutions have been canceled in the coming days.

Zelenskyy adviser speaks out about attack

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser denied that Ukraine was involved in the deadly Crocus concert hall attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall (Moscow Region, Russia),” Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on X. “It makes no sense whatsoever.”

No evidence has emerged to suggest Ukraine may have been involved, but Ukrainian officials may be trying to pre-empt accusations, as some Kremlin hawks have already started pointing at Kyiv.

Asked whether the shooting was at all tied to the war in Ukraine, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said: “There is no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians, were involved in the shooting, but again, this just broke. We’re taking a look at it, but I would disabuse you at this early hour have any connection to Ukraine.”

Videos posted to social media appear to show chaos inside Moscow's Crocus City Hall during and after a terrorist attack.

Some videos include what sound like gunshots and show men with rifles, as concertgoers frantically try to exit the venue.

State Department issues warning to Americans in Moscow

Jason Abbruzzese

The State Department said that the U.S. Embassy in Moscow is aware of the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall and that U.S. citizens should avoid the area and follow the instructions of local authorities.

"The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for U.S. embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates in Russia," the State Department said in a message posted to its website .

'What a nightmare in Crocus,' Widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny condolences about concert attack

Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who died in prison last month, expressed her condolences about the attack Friday.

"What a nightmare in Crocus," Navalnaya wrote on X. "Condolences to the families of the victims and quick recovery to the injured. Everyone involved in this crime must be found and held accountable."

320 firefighters, 3 helicopters working to put out fire

Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said the number of rescue crews responding to the attack is growing and now includes more than 320 firefighters, 130 emergency vehicles and three helicopters dumping water on the burning concert venue.

Moscow regional governor says 40 dead, more than 100 injured

Moscow Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram that at least 40 people are dead and more than 100 injured in the terrorist attack, confirming figures previously reported by Russian state news.

Putin informed about concert venue attack 'in the first minutes,' Kremlin spokesperson says

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin was informed about the shooting at the Crocus concert hall "in the first minutes" of the attack, Russian state news agency RIA reported.

The president is receiving information about what is happening and the measures being taken through all relevant services and is giving necessary instructions, Peskov said according to RIA.

Russian journalist was inside concert venue when gunmen entered

Russian news agency RIA Novosti said on Telegram that one of its reporters was inside the venue when gunmen entered and began shooting concertgoers.

The journalist said that at least three unmasked gunmen in camouflage entered the hall a few minutes before 8 p.m. Moscow time. They shot people point-blank and threw incendiary bombs, according to the journalist.

Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson calls incident 'bloody terrorist attack'

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia's foreign ministry, called the Friday night incident at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow a "bloody terrorist attack" as she called for "strong condemnation" from the international community.

"Now, as the Russian authorities have stated, all efforts are being devoted to saving people," Zakharova said. "The entire world community is obliged to condemn this monstrous crime!"

U.S. national security spokesperson says embassy has told Americans to avoid large gatherings in Moscow
