Why Choose a Class B RV for a Family of 3?

There are a number of reasons to choose a Class B RV, and you may be surprised to hear that there are even more reasons to choose one of the best Class B RVs for a family of 3. But what might some of those reasons be? Here are some potential pros behind choosing a Class B RV for your family of three:

  • Fewer utility needs compared to other RVs . Many people opt for a Class B RV given the fact that it has far fewer utility needs compared to any type of larger RV. This is because they are physically smaller, and you don’t need additional utilities or amenities in order to live comfortably inside it. For example, your Class B RV will only need one air conditioner to keep everything cool, and you likely won’t be using too much water on board this RV. While it may mean that your holding tanks have a smaller capacity, your utilities should be easy to keep track of otherwise.
  • Compact frame means it’s easier to drive. If you are stressing about driving an RV of any type around, you may want to consider a Class B RV because of its ease when it comes to driving . These RVs are essentially vans in every way, with a similar drivetrain and capacity. This means that you likely will only have a small number of adjustments to do in order to feel comfortable on the road, and this can be a huge plus for those of you worried about driving an RV with your family in the car too!
  • A surprising amount of space and storage solutions. Many people would baulk at the idea of purchasing a Class B RV for any size of family, but these campervans have a lot to offer. The storage solutions and space-saving options available for just about any Class B RV are impressive, and likely lend you enough wiggle room when it comes to packing everything for your family of 3. While it may take some rearranging and adjustments, Class B RVs truly do have enough space and storage solutions for a small family!
  • Many Class B RVs have boondocking features, standard . If you think that your family would enjoy an adventure off-grid, you may want to consider a Class B RV for its boondocking features. Many campervans have boondocking features included in the initial purchase price, which means that you save money on some features that you may or may not use right away. Having the option to camp off-grid is something that many people crave nowadays, and you may find that your family of three truly enjoys getting off-grid and camping away from the crowds!
  • You can still tow with some Class B RVs. Depending on the towing capacity and power of the Class B RV that you end up purchasing, you may be able to tow a residential car or boat behind your RV. This ends up coming in handy, especially with a family of three. You have the option to camp and leave your van hooked up to any and all utilities, while you’re free to drive your residential car around and explore with your family. This gives you another vehicle option, whether it be a car or boat, and you truly have more opportunities to enjoy your camping adventure!
  • Well-built and easy to maintain rigs . Many people choose to purchase a Class B RV these days due to the fact that they are well-built and fairly easy to maintain. Every single RV out there on the market today needs some level of maintenance, whether it be cleaning or storing properly, or simply cleaning out your holding tanks! Class B campervans do not need much in terms of the average travel trailer maintenance, and they are typically well built. While this does lead to a higher initial purchase price, your Class B RV is likely to last longer compared to other RV styles.

As you can see, we have only scratched the surface in terms of all of the benefits you can experience through a Class B RV purchase. But what should you consider before settling on a Class B RV for your family of three? Read on to learn more!

What to Consider in a Class B RV for a Family of 3?

Whether it’s the layout or the sleeping arrangements, there’s a lot to consider in a Class B RV for a family of three. So, let’s take a look at all those things before you settle on one particular campervan!

Layout or Floor Plan

Choosing a layout or floor plan that works well for your family is key. While this may not be something that you are sure of right away, finding a floor plan that suits your lifestyle and other members of your family will be your most important job before shopping.

Are you seeking a Class B RV with a proper dry bathroom , or do you want another designated sleeping area so that your child can bring a friend? No matter what you are looking for, there’s a Class B RV out there that’s right for you. It’s just important to narrow down what your expectations are.

Something important to note about just about any Class B RV is the fact that they are compact. Your third bed for your child will likely be lofted above the driver’s area, or otherwise converted from another piece of furniture located in the RV.

This is something that you should pay attention to as you shop, especially if you know that your child is uncomfortable with heights or has specific sleeping needs. Again, there is a Class B RV out there for everyone, but it may take some extra searching to find a floor plan that works well for you and your family!

Length and Height

For the most part, most Class B RVs land at about the same length and height, across all RV manufacturers and brands. However, you may want to search for a Class B RV that has a raised roof, perfect for tall RVers . Likewise, you may want a slightly longer Class B RV so that you get a little bit more living space.

Campervans typically range in length from 17 ft to over 25 ft, depending on the amenities and brands. Thankfully, all class B RVs are easy to drive and park, which means you won’t have to worry about any length limits at National or state parks, as well as RV parks . But if you want something that’s a little bit larger than average, definitely keep an eye out for it as you shop!

Luxury Features

Just because you are purchasing a campervan doesn’t mean it can’t feel a little bit luxurious. Luxury RVs are all the rage nowadays, especially for campers who live in their rig full-time or want something that feels a bit more like home. If you are interested in purchasing a luxury RV, this is definitely something to keep an eye out for as you shop.

Luxury RVs tend to feel more bespoke in their interior design, as well as more personably furnished. You often have stainless steel accents, fine linens on your bed, and even more luxurious touches throughout the rig.

Additionally, luxury RVs tend to have more features included in the standard purchase price, though the standard purchase price is always higher on a luxury Class B compared to a standard one! This is the most important thing to keep in mind should you be shopping for a luxury Class B RV: the purchase price will be much higher on these types!

Sleeping Arrangements for Families

Speaking of the layout and floor plan for your family, you should pay particular attention to the sleeping arrangements on board any Class B RV that you shop for. You may find that the sleeping styles for a third or even fourth person are not as effective or practical as you are hoping for.

For the most part, Class B RVs include a proper bed, either converted from two twin beds or found in a Murphy bed style. You can also get a Class B RV with a lofted bed area, and some options even have power lift beds that tuck into the ceiling when not in use.

If none of these options speaks to you, or if you are having trouble finding a Class B RV that you like with these options, many others give you a convertible sleeping area in the driver’s cabin. However, these beds may not work for your child, so make sure you consider the sleeping arrangements on board your campervan carefully.

Bathroom Style

Choosing a bathroom that works well for your family onboard a Class B RV might be easier said than done. Most bathrooms onboard campervans are known as wet baths, which means that you have the toilet, sink, and shower area all in the same room. Everything is designed to get wet in order to maintain a minimalist interior and maximize space.

However, you may not be interested in this idea, especially if you are used to traditional bathrooms in residential homes. There are some Class B RVs with dry baths, which means that you have separate utilities and the entire room isn’t designed to get wet. However, these are rare and often take up more space than necessary.

Regardless of what you choose, you should keep your family’s needs in mind. You may get lucky and find a Class B RV that has a toilet and sink separate from a shower, giving you even more freedom to get ready for your day with your family. However, know that space is always at a premium inside a Class B RV, and the bathroom is often the first thing to shrink!

Kid-Friendly Features

Even if you only plan on travelling with your child and significant other, you should keep an eye on Class B RVs that offer kid-friendly features. Most of these are subtle and included in the standard purchase price, but you may want a campervan with a few more personal touches.

For example, you may want a Class B RV with easy to clean flooring and upholstery inside. You may also want a tablet holder in the area where your child will be sleeping, or perhaps you are looking for a special sleeping area with storage pockets just for your child.

Many RV manufacturers want their customers to feel special, no matter their age. You may find that many Class B RVs have unique touches just for your child, making your search easier!

Before you fall in love with any Class B RV, you should have some idea of what you can safely spend. Your budget should be one of your first considerations, especially knowing that most RV initial purchase prices are not what you end up spending. RV manufacturers give you plenty of options to add on additional amenities, but these always come at a price.

Depending on the level of luxury and amenities that you go with, many Class B RVs range in price from $100k to well over $400k. This is a huge price range and something that is difficult to predict, but sticking to a realistic budget is key to finding the RV of your dreams!

Feeling confident about all of your wants and needs in a Class B RV for your family of 3? Here are 11 of the best Class B RVs for a family of 3 available on the market today! Let’s get started, with all of your desired amenities in mind.

Best Overall: Winnebago Solis

  • Pop top roof gives you an additional sleeping area
  • Easy to clean and simplistic interior
  • Plenty of storage with a collapsible rear bed
  • Gasoline fuel type may not be your favorite

Not only does the Winnebago Solis have room to sleep everyone, it also comes at an affordable price. Starting at $128k, the Solis offers customers a lofted sky bed area for the kiddos, as well as everything else you need in a starter Class B campervan. Let’s take a closer look at it now.

One of the top selling features found within the Winnebago Solis is the fact that it has a pop top roof with a lofted bed. This bed can sleep up to 2, and there’s a rear sleeping area for the adults. If that wasn’t enough, the Solis also has a convertible dining bench area, giving you yet another sleeping arrangement, should your child want to bring a friend along.

The roof doesn’t just have a pop top included within it. You also get 220 watts of solar panels so that you can go off-grid with ease in this campervan. Additional solar is available, as well as additional batteries, though these will come at an extra cost. However, given the compact and limited means of the campervan, you likely won’t need much more electricity than that.

Efficiency and easy access is what the Solis is all about. You have your water tanks and utilities on display, easily accessible, and easier to maintain. You also have plenty of storage, both inside and out of this campervan. Nobody has to leave anything behind with this compact RV.

Speaking of storage, the rear bed area completely lifts up to give you plenty of space for bikes, kayaks , and other recreational toys. Plus, the kitchen has everything you may need inside of it, including an induction cooktop and a mini fridge that you can access from the outside of the van.

While it’s a gas engine and the interior design is fairly basic, the Winnebago Solis has a lot to offer. It’s a great starter Class B RV, especially when you consider just how many sleeping areas it has. Plus, it has a four-wheel drive to take you anywhere you need to go, and that starting price point can’t be beaten!

Best on a Budget: Pleasure-Way Tofino

  • Minimalist interior is easy to clean
  • Skyloft sleeping area for the kiddos
  • Great price point for a Class B
  • No bathroom on board

If you liked the Solis but want to keep your budget under $100k, you should definitely check out the Tofino from Pleasure-Way. This camper van starts at $87k, which is ridiculously affordable for everything it has to offer. Let’s take a closer look at this fantastic option now!

The interior design on the Tofino may be simplistic and fairly basic, but it still brings a level of comfort and ease when you think about cleaning it. The most important thing to know about this particular Class B RV is the fact that it does not have a bathroom on board. However, it makes up for this with a spacious galley, a rear sleeping area, and a lofted bed area with a pop-top roof.

Even with the couch that converts into your primary sleeping area, you still have roughly 70 cubic feet of storage space at the back of the van. This gives you plenty of room for your bikes and kayaks, or whatever else you may want to bring along for the ride.

When it comes to the utilities on board this camper van, you have an inverter, two large house batteries , and the option to add solar panels to your pop-top roof. This gives you plenty of off-grid capabilities and an easy excuse to camp without utilities. Plus, all of your kitchen accessories are electronic, so you won’t need to worry about propane.

You can further customize your Tofino with an exterior paint job, including a bright cherry red. You can also add a roof rack on top of your RV so that you can easily keep your kayaks up top. Finally, you can also add magnetized screen doors, allowing you to open up your van when you are enjoying camp at the end of the day.

All in all, this is a solid Class B RV for a family of three, especially when you consider the fact that your little one will have a private bunk area that doesn’t take up any extra space inside of the RV. The main drawback is that there’s no bathroom here, but you may not want to worry about that sort of thing in the first place!

Best Bathroom for Families: Airstream Atlas

  • Slide-out feature gives you plenty of space in the living area
  • Entire rear of the RV is dedicated to a dry bath
  • Convertible driver’s cabin becomes your child’s bedroom
  • High price point and sleeping area may not work for larger kids

If you found the Tofino lacking because it didn’t have a bathroom, you should definitely check out the bathroom on board the Airstream Atlas. Not only is it a proper dry bath, but it is spacious and elegant enough for just about any family. Let’s take a closer look at this Class B RV full of luxury features.

The first thing you’ll likely notice about the Airstream Atlas is the fact that it has a slide out on board. This is fairly rare for a Class B RV, which is likely why Airstream classifies it as a Class B+. This essentially means it is a larger Class B RV, but that makes it even better for a family of three!

Having a slide-out for this Class B camper van means that you have a fully convertible sofa that becomes a spacious bed. When you first walk onto the Airstream Atlas, you may be confused as to where your child will sleep. Unfortunately, the primary sleeping area for any additional guests will be in the cab area of this RV.

Airstream has considered families and people wanting to sleep more on board their Class B RV. They have manufactured their own unique spare bed set up, which adds a cushion in between the driver’s and passenger seats, allowing for a twin bed sleeping area. This is ideal for younger children, but it may not work for children who are older or too large to sleep comfortably in this area.

However, if this style of the sleeping area works well for you, the Atlas has tons to offer. The kitchen is well-appointed, the interior design is luxurious and elegant, and the rear bathroom rivals many residential bathroom suites. It has a shower, separate vanity area, and toilet, giving your family more room to get ready in the morning.

Just be warned: this RV starts at $289k, making it one of the more luxurious ones on this list. However, if you are seeking a proper dry bath on board your Class B RV, you likely won’t find better than the Airstream Atlas!

For the Off-Grid Family: Winnebago Revel

  • Ready for off-grid living, including 4 wheel drive
  • Easy to clean and maintain interior
  • Utilities and storage are all easily accessible
  • Air mattress sleeping area may not work for all kids

Starting at $210k, the Winnebago Revel makes it onto many of our Class B lists, including this one. There’s a lot to love about this RV, including its off-grid options, all included in the standard purchase price. Let’s take a closer look at the Revel.

Not only is the Winnebago Revel built on a safe and reliable Mercedes-Benz chassis, but it also has a diesel engine and four-wheel drive incorporated. With all of its boondocking abilities , the Revel is truly designed to go anywhere that you want to go, with its raised chassis and all weather wheels.

The interior design of this particular Class B RV is rugged and easy to clean. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a delicious meal, and there’s a dining area just behind the driver’s seat. The rear of the RV is the primary sleeping area, and the only other sleeping option for the kiddos is something that may not work for you.

You can purchase an additional air mattress for the front cab area of this Class B RV, giving you extra sleeping space for the little ones. However, if you have an older child seeking more privacy, you may want to choose a Class B RV with a lofted bed.

Still, besides this, the Revel offers you multiple batteries to store any and all the electricity you need, solar panels, and a power lift rear bed that allows you to store things underneath it. This area also has all of your utilities and water, easily accessible and easy to maintain. Plus, there’s a small wet bath with a tankless water heater, giving you access to unlimited hot water.

There’s also plenty of overhead storage within the RV, and an exterior roof rack with a rear ladder, all included standard. This gives you plenty of options to bring along everything you may want, and you even have space to sleep everyone!

Most Storage: Coachmen Galleria

  • Plenty of storage, including heated storage
  • Twin bed sleeping area separate from the main bed
  • Lovely cabinetry and interior design throughout
  • Price point may be high if you are looking for something more unique

At just under 25 feet in length, the Coachmen Galleria has a lot to offer those of you seeking an RV with plenty of storage. Not only does it have plenty of room in the kitchen, but there’s also overhead cabinetry and a wardrobe so that you can keep just about anything you want on board. But what else might this RV have to offer? Let’s check it out now.

There are four available floor plans for the Coachmen Galleria, but make sure that you choose one with a jump seat that converts into a twin bed sleeping area. This is the only way that you’ll be able to sleep the entire family on board the Galleria, so definitely keep this in mind before you make your final purchase.

When you first walk into the Coachmen Galleria, you will likely notice its upscale interior, without being unapproachable. In fact, the interior design on board this RV is easy to clean and you will likely notice all of the overhead storage compartments right away. This is just the beginning in terms of all of the storage options on board this RV, depending on which floor plan you choose.

If you choose the floor plan that has a rear power lift bed, this gives you the entire bottom of the RV to use for storage and whatever else you deem fit. If your bed is raised while your van is in motion, you have plenty of space for kayaks and bicycles, enough for the whole family! Plus, this storage area is heated so that you can camp any time of year.

There are plenty of features included standard on this rig, bringing the Galleria to a level of luxury you may not expect. For example, there’s wifi on board, 330 watts of solar on the roof , multiple batteries to store all of this electricity, and a well-equipped kitchen for the chef in the family.

Complete with a wet bath, there’s a lot to love about this RV. However, the purchase price may be a little high, depending on whether or not you want to use your RV year-round. Keep this in mind, as there may be a better option for you out there.

Best for Older Kids: Thor Sequence

  • Excellent price point to start
  • Easy to clean and maintain interior design
  • Fuel efficient with solar panels as well
  • Lofted sleeping area for the kids costs extra

Starting at $134k, the Thor Sequence is a great choice for the busy family who wants to hit the road. Better yet, it’s ideal for those of you with older kids wanting to camp, as it has an optional lofted bed area on select floor plans. At this price, the Sequence is definitely worth considering- let’s check it out now.

Since it is fairly unclear from their website, I highly recommend checking in with Thor should you want the Sequence with the sky loft bed area. They mention it only being available on certain floor plans, but it doesn’t appear obvious on their website. However, it is definitely an option, though it will cost more and you will definitely have to budget for this.

Besides adding an additional sleeping area on this rig, there’s plenty to love included in the standard price. It’s considered one of the most fuel efficient Class B RVs currently on the market, built on a lightweight Ram chassis. It also has a direct partnership with Thule, giving you a rear bike rack, a roof rack with a ladder, and much more.

Given that this RV has plenty of storage, both inside and out, and a lofted sleeping area, your older child should feel comfortable sleeping on board this RV. They have their own private sleeping area, and plenty of room to keep their things. This RV may be ideal if you have a particularly cantankerous teen that isn’t very excited about camping!

Speaking of teenagers, the Thor Sequence comes equipped with Wi-Fi as well as multiple televisions, depending on the floor plan. You can get a swivel TV that converts the exterior of your RV into an Entertainment System , complete with an awning. Plus, the kitchen is easily accessible from the outside of the RV, depending on the floor plan of course.

All in all, this Class B RV is perfect for a family of three, though do keep in mind that you will have to pay a bit extra based on the lofted sleeping area. However, it’s all worth it to be able to bring the whole family!

Best Diesel: Winnebago Era

  • Diesel engine and Mercedes-Benz chassis
  • Fantastic rear bed design with twin bed upfront
  • Great interior design with bathroom and full kitchen
  • Initial purchase price will likely increase based on amenities

Winnebago has upped its game in terms of its Class B campervans in recent years, given their popularity and general ability to be uniquely designed. The Winnebago Era is no exception, as this RV comfortably sleeps 3 people, without any additions or alterations to the floor plan. Let’s check it out in more detail now.

There’s only one floor plan that sleeps 3 people when it comes to the Era, but this floor plan has everything you need on board. There’s a large rear sleeping area, which you can have as either two twin beds or one large king bed. Plus, there’s a dinette seat at the front of the rig that converts into a compact twin bed, perfect for a child.

Starting at $211k, this Class B RV costs a bit more than others on this list. However, that’s because this RV is built on the iconic Mercedes-Benz chassis, complete with a fuel-efficient diesel engine. Many RV manufacturers have a higher initial purchase price for diesel engines, but this type of fuel often saves you more in the long run.

The price likely won’t see something that you noticed when you consider the fine interior design on board this RV, along with how much storage it has to offer. There’s a wet bath with accordion-style doors to close things off when not in use, and the kitchen has an induction cooktop with a fairly large refrigerator.

You can outfit this RV for either gas or electric utilities, as the heating and kitchen have both options in them. While not too many off-grid capabilities come standard, Winnebago gives you the option to add on whatever you might need to enjoy time boondocking, especially because this RV comes equipped with four-wheel drive.

If you are shopping for a reliable diesel Class B RV that fits the whole family, the Era is a great place to start. You can outfit it to your heart’s content, but keep in mind that this will only add to the initial purchase price. However, why not make this Class B RV one of your dreams?

Best AWD/4WD: Thor Compass AWD

  • Large chassis offers 4 wheel drive without being too difficult to drive
  • Proper two-bed sleeping areas
  • Plenty of kitchen amenities and a dry bath
  • Main bed area offers some privacy, but not much

Not only does the Thor Compass offer you all wheel drive, but it also is considered a Class B+. This gives you more space inside of the RV to sleep three people comfortably, along with plenty of storage. Let’s take a look at what makes the Compass special now.

Starting at $147k, this gasoline engine powered by a Ford Transit chassis is a great choice for those of you seeking pickup and stability. The price point on this is fair, especially when you consider just how large this RV is compared to other Transit vans.

There are two available floor plans for the Compass, though only one naturally sleeps three people inside. The entire side wall is a slide out, giving you an expanded living area that has room for your main sleeping area, a flip down queen bed. You can walk around this queen bed, which is not something you can normally do on board Class B RVs.

This is the only other Class B RV on this list with a proper dry bathroom, and a designated shower separated from the sink and toilet. You also get a residential size refrigerator with a freezer compartment, and your dining area converts into your secondary sleeping area, a proper conversion for children of any size.

The kitchen is spacious and outfitted with every appliance you might need. Plus, there’s a large wardrobe and closet area in the bedroom, giving you plenty of storage. An attractive skylight illuminates the driver’s cab area and dining room, just an extra touch that may make you feel like you are in an upscale RV.

You may need to do some work in terms of adding additional amenities and boondocking features, but there’s a lot to love about this Class B. It feels more like a Class C inside , though the main bedroom area only has a curtain for privacy. This is something to keep in mind if you are seeking more privacy while camping on the road.

Easiest to Clean: Storyteller Overland Classic MODE

  • Unique and adventurous interior design
  • Mercedes-Benz chassis with off-roading capabilities
  • Two distinct sleeping areas for the whole family
  • Higher price point and relatively unknown brand name

A unique brand that we have yet to address on this website, the Storyteller Overland Classic MODE Class B RV has a lot to offer for those of you seeking something simple and easy to maintain. Plus, this is another RV that gives you two designated sleeping areas without needing to add anything on or settle for an air mattress. Let’s check it out!

Listed at $175k, Storyteller Overland is a particular RV brand that gives you a clear and transparent price. This listed price seems to suggest that you won’t have to pay for anything extra additional, making it clear and easy to understand just what you’re paying for. This is a huge bonus, especially in the RV manufacturing community.

But now let’s discuss what’s included in this RV. The interior design of this class B van is adventurous and simplistic, and everything has its place. The interior storage compartments have to pull out drawers and many conveniences not offered by other RV brands. There’s even more storage underneath the main sleeping area, enough space for your kayaks and bicycles.

There’s a dining area just behind the driver’s seat, and this is where the second bedroom is. The dinette sofa converts into a sleeping area, perfect for any child or guest. Plus, with the spacious interior design of this rig, you’ll likely forget that you’re on board a Class B!

With a Mercedes-Benz chassis and rooftop storage as well as a unique and compact bathroom area, this camper van truly has everything you need inside and out. You can easily cook up a meal or take a shower, whether you want to do this inside or outside. The price point may be a bit high, but when you consider the off-grid capabilities on board this RV, you may find the price a bit more reasonable.

Most Luxurious: American Coach American Patriot

  • Beautiful and contemporary interior design
  • Elegant bathroom and kitchen
  • Ability to go off-grid with additions
  • Sleeping areas are side by side

Available in five different floor plans and countless numbers of exterior paint jobs, the American Patriot from American Coach is a great campervan for those of you seeking a bit more luxury on board. With fine leather finishes and contemporary design, you’ll likely fall in love with the look of this one. Let’s check it out in detail now.

There are a number of floor plans on this rig, but you should make sure that they work for you and your whole family before making a final purchase. The best way to sleep 3 people on board this RV is to choose one of the floor plans with convertible jump seats. However, this means that the main bed is right beside the jump-seat sleeping area, which may not be something you are interested in.

If you don’t mind snuggling up a bit more than usual, then the American Patriot has a lot to offer in terms of its design and storage. The interior is contemporary and bright, with beautiful white upholstery and countertops. The entire space feels light and bright and truly brings the outdoors in.

There’s a competent kitchen and a tankless hot water heater, and you can even get this van outfitted with four-wheel drive and solar panels. These features do not come standard, however, and you may end up adding a great deal to the initial purchase price depending on what you are looking for.

No matter what, the American Patriot truly feels like a step up from many other standard campervans. This is also a great rig for living in full time, given its welcoming interior and ability to make this van exactly what you wanted it to be at a price!

Runner-Up:  Airstream Interstate 19

  • Can sleep the whole family with an additional bed purchase
  • Easy to drive and fairly compact
  • Beautiful interior design with a spacious bathroom
  • High price point without additional amenities

While it may start at just over $200k, the Airstream Interstate 19 is a great choice for those of you seeking an easy to drive campervan with just enough luxury to impress. While this is another option that requires you to purchase an additional bed area for the driver’s section of the rig, you may find that the Interstate 19 has a lot to offer you and your family. Let’s take a closer look.

Airstream constantly collaborates with Mercedes-Benz, giving you a chassis that is nimble and easy to drive. Having a 19 foot long van means that you can easily park and maneuver city streets just as well as campgrounds, giving you the freedom to go wherever you want.

Speaking of taking this van wherever you want to go, the Interstate 19 can be outfitted with an all-electric solar package, giving you the freedom to go off-grid whenever you want. While it doesn’t come standard, many people add on this feature, especially given just how easy this rig is to drive.

The primary bed area converts into a king size bed, one of the largest options available in a camper van. While the secondary sleeping area pales in comparison, you gain a spacious bathroom and kitchen area instead.

All in all, there’s a lot to love about the Interstate 19, so long as you can afford it. It is at a pretty high price to begin with, and that price will only increase, depending on the amenities you need. However, this is a luxury rig that is extremely easy to drive and can indeed fit your family of 3!

Final Thoughts

As you can no doubt see from our list, finding some of the best Class B RVs for a family of 3 is easier than you might have first expected.

Keeping in mind the amenities that you prefer as well as all of the utilities that you might want gives you plenty of options, even for the most adventurous of small families.

Are you interested in doing van life as a family? Living or traveling in a camper van with kids is a fast track to spending more quality time together, exploring the great outdoors, and building strong bonds. Plus, it provides a ton of educational opportunities for your kids to learn about the world around them, experience new things, and challenge themselves in different ways.

However, you may be wondering what camper van layouts work best for families and how you (and all of your stuff) can all harmoniously fit in a van.

I had a baby in February 2023, and I was determined, hell or high water to continue doing van life (to some degree) with my baby. As I was planning my latest van build, I researched all of the different camper van layouts for families in order to determine what was going to work best for me.

One commonality I’ve heard among families successfully doing van life is the importance of designing your build in a way that’s specific to your family’s needs.

In this post, I’m going to share the most important things to consider when designing your family’s dream van plus some of the best family camper van setups (including mine) that I’ve seen for families of three, four, and five (or more).

Sponsored by Storyteller Overland

Storyteller Overland builds family-friendly, adventure-ready 4×4 Sprinter Vans. Their MODE Vans come with all of the important essentials (including a shower), seat 4, comfortably sleep a family of 3, and are ready to drive off the lot. Check out their website for the different models available and see them in action on Instagram .

Things to Consider for Your Family Camper Van

How many people does your van need to accommodate.

The number of people that will need a seatbelt and be sleeping in the van is the most important factor when deciding the best family camper van layout. Regardless of whether you’ll be living in it full-time, part-time, or just on vacations, you’ll need enough seatbelts and beds for all the adults and kids.

Since this will become your home on the road, it’s essential that everyone feels comfortable in their sleeping space . Cramming together in one bed might not be the best choice for the long term, so you’ll want to consider what everyone needs to feel comfortable in your family van.

The other area this matters is seat belts. You can’t just build a dinette, slap some seat belts in, and call it good. You need to make sure that any seat belts you install will actually do their job in the case of an accident.

When you plan for your conversion, make sure you leave room for safety-approved seating. Check out our post on the best vans for van life to learn the pros and cons of the most popular camper van models to find which will be best for your family.

How old are your kids?

The age of your child(ren) is important because it will determine what type of bed(s) you need, the level of privacy, and the potential safety mechanisms you might need in place .

You’ll also want to decide how long you plan to keep the van when you are deciding on your layout. A camper van family floorplan that works with an infant or toddler might not work once the kid gets a bit older.

With living quarters so tight, privacy doesn’t come easily in a van which might be a concern for both parents and children.

Bedtimes will also come into play depending on the age of your child. This summer when traveling with my 4 month old, we had to build a makeshift fort around his travel crib so he could go to bed and have it be dark at 8pm, while we stayed up later.

There are some creative ways to get privacy and separation, and I’ll share an example down below of one simple privacy solution.

What sort of activities does your family enjoy?

A big perk of van life with kids is all the opportunities to get outside together! If you like to kayak, climb, hike, surf, backpack, photograph, do yoga – you’ll need to plan storage space for all the gear when you’re designing your van layout .

Individual interests are equally important as group activities so that everyone gets to do the things they enjoy. Most van life families I’ve met on the road spend almost all of their time outdoors except when bad weather rolls through. So, if everyone in your family is into being outside, they’ll probably love van life.

Is sleeping outside an option?

Rooftop tents are a popular way to add an extra bed but this is only suitable if you know you’ll always be parked in a place that allows camping (campgrounds, public lands, etc.) If you anticipate needing to stealth camp, even for a night or two here and there, a rooftop tent isn’t an option as the main bed. But, it’s a great addition to have for a guest!

Communication is key

Whether you’re already a seasoned road tripper or you’re just beginning your family road trip journey, good communication is the foundation of a successful, happy trip .

Having open conversations with everyone you’ll be traveling with is a vital step in setting the family up for success. Talk to your partner if you have one, bring in your kids if they’re old enough, chat with your friends if they’ll be coming along – whoever will be on board, talk to them about their personal needs, wants, concerns, and questions.

This is especially important if you’ll be traveling with older kids that want more independence. I wrote a blog post about how to live in your van with a significant other but all of these tips also apply to traveling families.

Van Floor Plans for a Family of 3

@storytelleroverland mode vans.

Storyteller Overland ‘s ready-to-go 4×4 adventure vans are set up to seat 4 and comfortably sleep a family of 3. The main bed in the back sleeps two and can be easily folded away for more space during the day. The double bench seat in the lounge area (complete with two seatbelts) folds down into a convertible sofa bed as well to comfortably sleep a 3rd person.

@rebornbyadventure

The Moon family has a convertible bench/bed for their toddler with a simple fabric enclosure. The fabric walls easily hook in place at night and come down during the day. This is a great solution for privacy, plus it might help your little one go to sleep if you’re still awake with the lights on. In addition to the driver and passenger seats up front, they have a jump seat behind the passenger seat with a seatbelt that holds Zoey’s car seat.

This family of three adventures out of their self-built VW Crafter. They built a sleeping den beneath their bed for their young daughter and it’s one of the cutest camper van setups for families that we’ve ever seen. The little one loves having her own space to play in and sleep. As for seating, their van has a middle seat up front for three seats with seatbelts total.

@bearfoottheory

My latest van conversion was built for a family of 3 in mind. When I was planning my layout, we were still trying to get pregnant, and I didn’t want to build the entire van around a kid in case it didn’t happen. I decided to add a third seatbelt, but I didn’t build a permanent second bed for a kid. I figured if we did end up having a baby, the kid could sleep in a travel crib until they were old enough to sleep across the two front seats in a Cabbunk . The van also has a ton of easily accessible storage for small things like diapers, bottles, baby clothes, toys and more.

Van Floor Plans for a Family of 4

@outsidevan.

If you want bunk beds but you also want more space – check this out. This design by Outside Van called Off Grid features removable beds and two additional passenger seats with seat belts. It’s a pretty genius idea! Sleep up to four people when necessary or remove a bed or two (or three) and store more gear. They even managed to fit a full bathroom with a shower in this van. This is a great option for a versatile family camper van setup.

The Fite family installed a murphy bed and ladder for their young child so she’s able to go up and down at her leisure. Along their travels, they had another baby and modified the van to accommodate their newborn by building a wall and infant-sized murphy bed. The top photo shows their van set up for a family of 3 and the bottom photo shows their setup for a family of 4.

@jubel_explorer

This family of four travels the UK in a converted Sprinter campervan with two adorable bunks in the back for the little ones. It’s one of the most unique family camper van layouts we’ve seen and we can imagine the kids love having their own cozy bunks to sleep in. In addition to the driver and passenger seats up front, this van has a row of three forward-facing seats with seatbelts.

@norva.vehiculeaventure

Murphy beds are common in camper vans for families. Many van lifers prefer them because you can stow the bed up against the wall during the day and you can change the configuration depending on how many people you’re traveling with. In the image below, you’ll notice the beds are staggered which ensures that everyone has ample headspace.

@fernnhouse

This traveling family of four has murphy beds for their two toddlers. This design doesn’t have staggered beds, so the headspace is a little tight on the lower bed. But overall, murphy beds are a practical use of space and can be customized to your needs. Traveling with an infant? Consider installing a net or rollbar to keep them safe in their nest at night.

@mm_vanexplore

In addition to a full-size bed for mom and dad in the back, this van has two hanging bunk beds for the kids towards the front end of the van. When not in use, the hanging beds hinge up for more headspace down below. As for seating, there are two additional forward-facing seats with seatbelts behind the cab.

@rambleandrevive

This family Sprinter van has two bunk beds with a ladder for their two kids, ages 2 and 4. What’s great about this family van layout is that everyone gets their own bed without sacrificing headspace. Plus, there are two additional forward-facing seats with seatbelts behind the cab so everyone can ride safely.

Van Floor Plans for a Family of 4 or More

@beboldlittleones.

The Sanchez family sleeps their family of 6 in this Sprinter van. Cozying up three in a bed might not be comfortable for a full-time van life family, but it is possible. This double platform bed is a popular choice for a family van setup. It utilizes vertical space well but has a bonus of increased storage under the bottom bed. Plus, you can customize the platforms for more or less headspace and storage. Their van has six seats — two rows of three seats — and one row of seating doubles as the family’s couch.

travel van sleeps 3

@lifeofkuhl

The Kuhl family traveled full-time in their camper van with their adolescent and young teenage kids. This design is one of the most impressive uses of space I’ve seen in a family camper van! The parents slept in a platform bed, their teen daughter slept in a dinette that opens into a twin-size bed, and their two adolescent sons slept in bunks in the cockpit. The top bunk is suspended by ratchet straps and rests atop the seats. When not in use, it hooks into the headliner. The bottom bunk is about 6 inches longer than the top and is made simply of foam and plywood. It folds into itself to be easily stowed under the platform bed when not in use. Their kids seemed to love their beds (and van life!)

The interior of a family campervan with two beds

The Calloway family camper van is set up to sleep 4-5 people. The adjustable upper bunk is operated by a power jack system. The dinette table drops down to make a queen-size bed. Not pictured here, there’s a bench in the van that sleeps another person! This open floor plan is a great option because of its smart use of vertical space.

Bunk beds in a family campervan

@thevanistafive

This family of 5 had one requirement for their van build: they wanted the kid’s rear seats to turn into beds and they wanted to have a dinette area. The single seat (behind the driver) turns into a single bed while the two seats in the back fold flat to make a king-ish size bed sleeping surface with the side benches. There is also a queen size bed that drops down from the ceiling! Finally, the dinette is created by pushing the two seats back on a L-track system and a table can be mounted in the center. We think this design is pretty genius!

Rooftop Tents and Pop-top Vans for Families

Rooftop tents for camper vans are great for road trips. They’re easy to set up, and most importantly, they don’t take up any space inside the van. As I mentioned earlier, if you plan to travel full-time and anticipate needing to stealth camp in towns, a rooftop tent should not be used as the main bed. But, it’s a great option for visiting guests or those nights you’d like to sleep under the stars.

Sprinter van with a popped rooftop tent and awning

Pop-top camper vans are a classic choice for families traveling with kids. Pop-tops, like those installed by Sportsmobile or Journey Vans below, have two beds: a platform inside the van and a loft up top. So, this is ideal for 1-4 people. Another perk of the pop-top family van is that they are typically installed on low-roof vans, so you can fit into parking garages.

These layouts are seriously cool. While I love having space in our 30′ fifth wheel, there are definitely days where I’d love to trade that in for the compact van life. Cool roundup, thanks!

Thank you for sharing this information. Camper vans are such a great way to explore the outdoors. (So long as everyone in the family gets along:) The images that you have supplied in this article are very inspirational and showcase what can be achieved with a vision and a will to do it. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for compiling a lot of info I was researching. Question is where does the family of 5 buckle in when driving between destinations? I have 3 kids ages 6, 5 and 4.

Thanks for reading, Wendy! You’ll see in the camper van layouts for larger families, like the one by Outside Van in this post, that there are additional seats built into the back behind the driver and passenger seat. This could also likely be set up as a row of three seats and I imagine there are some creative ways to set up the seating to make it multi-purpose so that when you’re not driving you can use them for extra seating or sleeping space.

We did a buildout that seats 7 and sleeps 5. All within the 144 MB sprinter van. We gave up the toilet and kitchen, but we live out setup. It’s more of a gear box and sleeper vs an RV. Check @nowplayingpdx in Instagram for pics.

sorry, but the main concern would be not where are those people sleeping. the question is how are all those sleepers driving in the van when they are not asleep? for most of those layouts that are shown that is a mystery. as much as I can guess from what I see on the pictures those vans would only have 2 seats: driver seed and a passenger next to the driver. what about the rest of the people? and for the layout mentioning family with 2 toddlers there are 2 car seats visible on the picture standing on the bench. I doubt that they are secured according to the low regulations, not to mention that in a lot of states sideways position would be illegal.

We’re wondering the same thing… Would be really great to see photos of those same vans with the seatbelted seats set up… Thanks!

Check out TheVanistaFive on Instagram. A great layout with safe seats for a family of 5.

Looks like there are jump seats in the front of most of these vans. I’m more curious where the gear/fridge/cooler for a 4/5 person family goes. There’s so much gear you want to take for mountain road trips.

I have been looking for a van or mini van conversion. I only want to sleep two people, but with a wide mattress. However, I would love to be able to drive two passengers for every day life. Everything I’ve seen so far only includes 2 seatbelts OR devotes lots of space and resources to sleeping an entire family. Does anyone know of a solution to just have a 3rd legal seatbelt? It seems that even for larger cargo vans, the front seats now are only designed for 2 people.

How do most people add the two seats behind the driver’s seat? Cargo vans don’t come with them. In passenger vans, those seats are usually three across, taking up too much room. When I was researching this, aftermarket seats seemed to be uninsurable.

We converted our mini-van a couple of years ago. I got a full size foldup futon mattress on amazon, and made a bed platform that folds up as well out of 2×4’s, plywood, and some hinges. We have stow-and-go seats that we fold down into the floor when we need the bed, but then fold up the bed and pop the seats back up for travel. We have a large slide-out drawer that is our “kitchen” under the back half of the bed – it holds our camp stove, pots/pans/plates/utensils in it, and serves as a counter to prepare and cook food on. We keep a couple of camp chairs, table, and the tent under the other half of the bed. We took out the rear stow-and-go seats and keep our cooler/water and other odds ‘n’ ends down in the well that they left. We have thought about a rooftop tent for the kids, or upgrading to larger van to be able to put beds for the four of us inside.

Great article and well written! We need more resources like it! Love the shared resources. Wish it had been around when we were looking for our van. Is it possible for ya to edit us in? Think our van and it’s builder is another great option (we thought so anyway) to sleep 4, go anywhere, year around, be a daily driver, AND carry tons!

Thanks for reading! We update our posts regularly, so we’ll check your page out when it’s time to give this post a refresh. Happy traveling!

This is excellent information, thank you! I’m so curious where you got that double bench seat in the picture at the top of this blog, and if the space between it and the cabinets is too much of an issue.

Hi Pierre – the top photo is a Storyteller Overland van, not my personal van. I would reach out to them directly to get more info on the bench: https://www.storytelleroverland.com

Wow, I love JUBEL_EXPLORER version! I’ll have to do the similar thing since we have a 5yo – sleeping in front seats for now, and a 7mo – sleeping with us for a moment, as I imagine. Sleep training was easy and quick – we’ve been using this book: https://www.parental-love.com/shop/baby-sleep-training that turned out to be amazing. Anyway – thanks for all the inspiration!

Hi Emma, glad you found some inspiration in this post (and love that you’re traveling with 2 little ones!) Thanks for the book recommendation & safe travels.

Thank you Emma for sharing the link! I bought this ebook and my life has changed. It is a pity that so few parents undertake to teach their children to sleep. Everyone thinks it has to be like this, that it’s natural and those first years are so difficult for them. It turns out that it doesn’t have to be this way. I am the best proof of this. Thank you again

If you’re looking for the freedom and sense of adventure that a motorhome provides but want the mobility of a car, then you should consider a camper van.

Camper vans are an attractive option given that they are compact, rugged, and can be as equipped as you need. You can go pretty much anywhere a car can go and get better gas mileage than bigger RVs.

They come in a variety of sizes and configurations depending on their purpose.

Some are designed for weekend travel, while others can accommodate simple full-time living. Some are for campgrounds, and others for boondocking. Some are cheap, and others are shockingly expensive!

(Curious what a $500,000 camper van entails? See at the end of the list!)

How Do You Choose the Right Camper Van?

Like other RV classes, there are many options for camper vans on the market. Perhaps too many. That's why we're highlighting the best ones.

Choosing the best camper van for you depends on your travel plans, as well as the following considerations:

  • Your Budget
  • Size to accommodate your gear and passengers
  • Drivetrain (2-wheel, 4-wheel, or all-wheel drive)
  • Diesel vs. gasoline
  • Service history and mileage (if buying used)
  • Weekender vs. Fulltime

The following list of 2024 best camper vans gives you a range of the above features.

The Best Camper Vans 2024

Based on our experience, many visits to RV shows, and other campers, we’ve compiled a list of the best camper vans for you to check out this year.

You'll find camper vans that are tried-and-true, as well as new models that are catching the attention of RVers everywhere.

The following are listed in no particular order, as the “best” depends on your individual needs and wants. But this shortlist will help you determine which camper van is best for you.

1. Grech STRADA-ion

STRADA-ion

The STRADA-ion is Grech's flagship Sprinter Motorhome. It's a luxury Class B with an advanced lithium-ion battery energy storage system. It provides a total of 1,260Ah, which will run the AC for up to 12 hours on battery power alone.

It has a 280-amp alternator that charges the lithium-ion batteries from idle , meaning you don't have to drive to charge your batteries. The battery management software pairs with its Fire Fly control system, which you can operate from your phone.

The 2024 Grech RV Strada is built on the all-new 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter AWD. with air suspension.

It's 24 feet long and sleeps 2. It comes in 2 floorplans, the Lounge Plan and Tour Plan. The biggest difference between the two is that the Lounge Plan seats up to 9, whereas the Tour Plan “only” seats 7. I put “only” in quotations because 7 is a lot of people!

And all seats have seat belts! Many campervans can “seat” several guests, but only provide seatbelts for 2-4. The Stradia provides a safer alternative for all of your travel companions.

MSRP starts at $259,900.

2. Embassy RV Dolphin SL

Embassy RV Dolphin SL Best Camper Vans

The Embassy Dolphin SL is known for its revolutionary floor plan that allows for two separate sleeping areas . That means a person can stay awake or wake up early and not disturb the person who's sleeping!

This separate sleeping arrangement also makes it popular among single parents, traveling friends, and traveling business partners. And, speaking of work, the rear bed platform converts into a table-height desk.

It's 22'2″ long and built on a Ford Transit Chassis. The kitchen and bathroom separate the front living/sleeping area from the rear bedroom. Your usable space can be extended with an optional rear porch with tent.

The Dolphin SL has a lithium-ion battery system. It doesn't come with solar, but the system can be fully charged by the engine. You can add a battery management system with Bluetooth™ connectivity as an option.

Unfortunately, Embassy doesn't list MSRP, but it likely starts in the $150,000 – $175,000 range. So, you have to call to get a quote for your desired floorplan and options.

The No Wood RV = Mold & Mildew Resistant (Video)

BUT! Perhaps the most NOTABLE FEATURE of the latest Dolphin SL RV Model is that it's a No Wood RV. It's made of composite material that makes it mold and mildew-resistant .

That's excellent news for RVers in wet or tropical climates. (Hear that Florida snowbirds?!)

3. Roadtrek Pivot

Roadtrek Pivot Best Camper Vans

The Roadtrek Pivot is 20'9″ long and built on a RAM Promaster 3500 chassis. It comfortably seats 4 and sleeps 3 with an optional folding mattress.

It has two different bed setup options: two twin beds or one king bed. The optional single folding mattress can be laid across the front two captain seats.

A popular feature is its Duo Space bathroom , which comes standard. It has a pivoting wall that creates a separate showering area and keeps the other amenities dry. They market it as the “driest wet bath ever.”

It also has an outdoor shower and rear access doors. So, you can open the side sliding door and rear swing doors for an open indoor/outdoor setup.

It comes standard with a 13′ power awning, 600 AMP lithium battery system, generator, 300-watt solar panels, and 12/100 V power inverter.

MSRP starts at $183,386.

4. Roadtrek Chase

roadtrek chase

We've owned a couple Roadtreks, so it's no surprise another model makes it on the list. The Chase is one of the most affordable on the list with it's simple, efficient design.

The Chase is 20'9″ and built on the Ram ProMaster 3500 extended van chassis. It can seat 4 and sleep 3 with an optional folding mattress that lays over the cab seats.

It has a 300W solar panel and 600 amp lithium battery system. Some other nice standard features include a 13′ power awning, 11,000 BTU A/C, and heavy duty magnetic bug screens for rear and passenger sliding door.

MSRP is $176,386.

5. Coachmen Galleria Li3

17 Best Camper Vans 2024 (New Class B RVs Available!) 1

The Coachmen Galleria is 24'3″ long and built on the award-winning 3500 Mercedes Sprinter extended platform. We toured it and took the above picture at the Florida RV SuperShow.

It has four floorplan options , including one option (24A) with a fixed bed and power incline storage underneath. Its kitchen is on the bigger side, including a 7.3 cu. ft. refrigerator with pull-out freezer in the 24A and 24FL floor plans.

Standard features include an Onan quiet generator, 330W solar, and a standard 330 Ah AGM battery with 2,000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter.

But you'll notice that we specifically listed the Galleria Li3 . This is an upgraded option for a 630 Ah Li3 lithium battery that we think makes it one of the best camper vans. (The model pictured above is an Li3).

Coachmen doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $250,000. You'd need to contact a local dealer to learn more.

6. Coachmen Beyond

17 Best Camper Vans 2024 (New Class B RVs Available!) 2

Coachment earns another spot on the list with the Beyond. We toured it and took the above picture at the Florida RV SuperShow.

At 22'2 “, it's two feet shorter and gets 1 mpg better gas mileage than the Galleria. It's built on the Ford Transit AWD chassis with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine and 10-speed transmission.

The Beyond has three floorplan options , including the 22RB that has a rear wet bath with a flip-down sink and shower. This roomier bathroom makes it a popular choice.

Some standard features include a 2.8KW gasoline generator, 195W solar panel with dual charging capabilities, and a 2,000W Xantrex inverter with auto-gen start. Like the Galleria, you can opt for the Li3 Lithium Battery System, among other nice upgrade options.

Coachmen doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $200,000. You'd need to contact a local dealer to learn more.

7. Coachmen Nova

coachmen nova

That's right, Coachmen has a third model that makes our list of the best camper vans. The Nova (as the name implies) is the newest member of the Coachmen Class B family.

The Nova is 20'11” and has three floorplans to choose from. Like the Beyond, it has a floorplan option with a rear bath (20RB).

It's built on the Ram Pro Master 3500 extended Chassis with a 3.6L V6 engine. It comes standard with 220W solar and 3 Group 31 115AH AGM Batteries.

Like the other two Coachmen on this list, you can opt for the Li3 Lithium Battery System. A unique option the Nova offers is a Pop Top with a 190W solar panel, skylight, and Thule awning.

Again, Coachmen doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $175,000. You'd need to contact a local dealer to learn more.

8. Thor Tellaro

Thor Tellaro Best Camper Vans

The Tellaro from Thor is one of the most affordable camper vans on this list. It features many of the same functionalities as their Sequence model, except the Tellaro is available with a pop-top.

The Tellaro is 21′ long, and without the pop-top, sleeps two people. It's available in 4 floorplans, so you have lots of choices with this one. We particularly like the 20A floorplan that gives you a sky bunk option in addition to a rear bedroom.

Standard equipment includes a Thule bike rack, 190-watt solar panel, dual 100-Ah lithium house batteries, power awning, and a power-saver AC system. This model features the same generator you’ll find in the Solis, as well as a similar bathroom.

The Tellaro, however, does have a few advantages over the Winnebago Solis. For example, it has a bigger dining table and refrigerator, extended storage space, and a powered awning.

Tellaro MSRP starts at $140,560, depending on the floorplan you select. The 20A floorplan that we like starts at $144,760.

9. 4X4 Tiffin GH1

17 Best Camper Vans 2024 (New Class B RVs Available!) 3

The GH1 is the new Tiffin 4×4 AWD vehicle, replacing the Tiffin Cahaba. It's a small but mighty camper van that seats 4 and sleeps 2.

The overall length is 19'6″ long and built on a Mercedes 2500 Sprinter chassis with a 3.0L turbo diesel engine.

It has on-board 200-watt solar panel, and a 540-Amp Hour Lithium-Ion Battery Kit with a 3,000-Watt Inverter. It's pre-wired for optional Starlink Pro and its 15,000-BTU A/C has soft-start and WirelessCapability.

The sleek design includes all-metal running boards, a fixed and side-mounted roof access ladder, and a powered awning. Another cool feature is its on-board air compressor.

Tiffin doesn't list the MSRP, but it likely starts around $180,000. Contact a local dealer to learn more.

10. Winnebago Travato

Winnebago Travato

The Travato from Winnebago is one of the top-selling camper vans in North America. At 21’, it sleeps 2 and seats 4.

It has 2 floorplans, one with a single large Murphy+bed (59G) and the other with two single beds (59K). Both floor plans are available in either AGM batteries/generator or lithium with a second under-the-hood alternator (59GL and 59KL).

It's built on a Ram ProMaster chassis with a 3.6L V6 engine.

Roof and sidewall insulation, heated tanks and available dual-pane acrylic insulated windows extend the camping season. We love winter camping, and even wrote an ebook for those who want to give it a try.

The Travato features a Pure 3  Advanced Energy System that provides more than 9,000 useable watt-hours of power. You can boost that to over 12,000 with their optional 4-module energy pack.

The 4 floorplans range from $175,292 to $210,515.

Winnebago also offers a 4-sleeper floorplan with the Solix 59PX . It starts at $152,169.

11. Winnebago Revel

17 Best Camper Vans 2024 (New Class B RVs Available!) 4

Winnebao earns another spot on the list with the Revel. It's now built on the AWD Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter chassis with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine.

The Revel is 19'7″, sleeps 2, and seats 4. It comes with one 320-amp hour LiFePO 4  battery you can monitor via Bluetooth. ®  Plus, a quiet, Hydronic Heating System.

The Revel's most notable feature that sets it apart from others is its power lift bed with large gear garage below. It gives you extra gear storage without sacrificing sleeping space. We also like the fold-down outside table.

MSRP is $223,495, which we think is reasonable for this compact RV that fits a lot of gear.

12. Pleasure-Way Plateau FL

Pleasure-Way Plateau FL Best Camper Vans

The Plateau FL is 22'9″ long and built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 van chassis. It has a 3.0L V6 BlueTEC diesel engine.

It has two separate living areas with an electric sofa that coverts to a queen bed in the back and a lounge area in the front. This setup allows two people to easily enjoy “Me Time” with separate TVs and sitting areas.

The front lounge also has a multifunctional workstation. And the gallery kitchen has more counterspace than you often see in camper vans.

The Plateau FL has Dual 100Ah lithium batteries, a 2000-watt pure-sine wave inverter, and an Onan generator.

MSRP is $204,750.

13. Airstream Rangeline

Airstream Rangeline Best Camper Vans

The Airstream Rangeline is 21′ long and is built on the RAM ProMaster 3500 chassis. It has a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine.

It has a simple, efficient floorplan with a rear sleeping area for 2 and seat capacity for 4. You can expand the living and sleeping space with an optional pop-top.

It comes standard with a single 270Ah Deep Cycle Lithium Battle Born Battery (LiFePO4), 100 amp charger, a 2,000 watt power inverter, and a 200 watt solar panel.

It may not have as many bells and whistles as other camper vans, but it's very practical and comfortable. Plus, it's one of the most affordable options.

Pricing starts at $147,570.

14. Airstream Interstate

Airstream Interstate

The Airstream Interstate comes in 6 models and two sizes: 19′ and 24′. You get lots of options, especially when it comes to how many people it can accommodate.

The 19-foot models sleep 2 and seat 4, but the 24-foot models can sleep two and seat up to 9 people! It's hard to go into detail about the features and floor plans, because you have so many options.

But Airstream lives up to its iconic name with all six models. So, they're worth checking out individually. The image above is the largest, most expensive of the bunch.

MSRP ranges from $178,640 to $246,351.

15. Entegra Coach Launch

17 Best Camper Vans 2024 (New Class B RVs Available!) 5

The Entegra Coach Launch is 19'6″ long and is built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 4×4 van chassis. It has a 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel engine.

The interior includes a generous garage space in the rear with a drop-down bed. It can sleep 2 and seat 3 in a small yet functional living area.

On the exterior, it has a fold-down exterior table, a double roof rack, and a moveable roof ladder. New for 2024, is its integrated Starlink Satellite Internet System.

It comes standard with a 48V 210Ah smart lithium battery that provides 10KWh of power. It also has a 3,500W inverter and 200W solar panels.

The Entegra Coach website has a Build & Price feature, which shows the basic MSRP at $246,375.

16. Westfalia Wave

westfalia wave

Twenty years after leaving the American market, the Italian RV company, Westfalia, returns to our shores. Westfalia campers are best known for their pop-up roofs, but they are also introducing a brand-new model called the Wave .

The Wave is 20′-9″ on a Dodge Promaster chassis. It has a complete bathroom, kitchen, and versatile sleeping options for up to 6 people. Yes, this campervan can sleep up to six people!

Their patented convertible passenger seating flips down over the driver's area to create a third bed. That's in addition to the pop-top bed that's perfect for kids and the larger bed options in the back. Of course, 6 adults would be pushing it, but it's a great option for families with small kids or teens.

Other notable features include:

  • Modern natural tones
  • Rear, under-bed trunk that can fit mountain bikes
  • Pass-through storage that can fit long gear, like paddle boards
  • Cassette toilet in wet bath (yes, it has a shower!)
  • Propane cooktop, microwave oven, and Vitrifrigo Refrigerator
  • 600-amp hours of lithium batteries & 3,000-watt inverter
  • Firefly tablet-style multiplex system

We got to tour it at this year's RV SuperShow in Tampa, and were impressed. They list two Florida RV dealers on their American website and include MSRP, so it seems like they are officially available*!

The non-pop top Wave MSRP is $156,627. The Wave Pop Top MSRP is $167,616.

*It's rather common at RV shows for European models to be showcased and promoted as “coming to America” without any substance backing that up. They attract a lot of hype at RV shows , but then you never see these RVs actually make it onto American roads.

So, it's reassuring that Westfalia already has an established and growing dealership network. Pro Tip: Be sure to ask about FIRM delivery dates. If the best they can offer is “available soon,” consider holding off.

17. The Advanced RV Van

The Advanced RV Van Best Camper Vans

Rounding out our list of the best Cass B RVs for 2022 are the custom vans built by Advanced RV of Willoughby, Ohio.

They are not for everyone because of the cost. They even clearly state in their FAQs that “an ARV will cost 2-4 times more than a factory-built, class B motorhome purchased from a dealer.” They're very possibly the most expensive campervan on the market.

These vans – built on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis – are completely customized to the customer. Each one is built with features and a floor plan personally selected by the buyer after several days of planning with Advanced RV engineers and designers.

No two Advanced RV vans are alike, and each is named by the customer. From the time the order is submitted to the time it is delivered – usually a year-long process – it is referred to by that name and never a number.

The vans typically have massive lithium battery power supplies, high-end, computer-controlled air suspension systems for smooth rides, handcrafted cabinetry, deluxe entertainment systems, and innovative components like recirculating water systems.

The vans start at about $340,000 and go up to around $500,000.

I told you these were not for everyone. But in a list of the best Class B RVs, Advanced RV has to be included. They truly are quality designs.

It is worth noting that they have Pre-Owned ARVs for sale on their website, as well. You don't get to fully customize it, but you do get a customized van at a better price.

Here's a video tour we did of the factory to give you an idea of the process.

Mike, I was surprised you did not have the Pleasureway Ontour 2.0 and 2.2 in your list. These are some of the most sought after vans in the country. I have an Ontour 2.2 and this coach is amazing. From the Ford eco boost engine to the large bathroom it is close to the perfect B. This doesn’t take into account the customer service Pleasureway is known for. I am 6ft 4in and about 280lbs and it is the only B van than is comfortable for someone my size.

Just an FYI: The Pleasure-Way Plateau is on a 3500 Mercedes Benz Sprinter van, not a 2500.

We own a 2018 Pleasure-Way XLTS, the larger B+ van, they currently don’t make them (too bad, it’s great!) and we love it! We looked at several others and felt the quality of Pleasure-Way was better than some on your list that you’ve rated higher, but that’s our opinion.

Great list! I recently did 2 road trips, 1 in a Winnebago Solis in the States and 1 in a brand new VW T6.1 California in Portugal. The ‘Winnie’ was pretty good but it’s a big sloppy thing, driving it just isn’t much fun and we had a bunch of issues with it form the start… Not Ideal…

The 2nd trip was much different. Portugal is incredible and I was blown away by the level of quality in the VW camper. The fit and finish was really nice and tight. If anyone is heading out that way check out the company, Siesta Campers, I think they’re really onto something special there. Enjoy the ride.

Looking for a short 17′ solid high-top B motorhome like the old Roadtrek 170. Todays “short” advertised B’s .are at least 19′. Revel’s Mercedes is too expensive. I’ve called the major B manufacturers and as of January 2021 no USA builder plans to meet this market. Is there a European product like this being sold and available in the lower 48?

We have a 1990 Ford E-250 fully self-contained. Shower works but is not hooked up. Few minor dings and repairs. We bought this as a basket case and then had nearly everything repaired so it all works fine now, I think. Has new Michelin tires, new computer, many other things. Microwave, fridge, TV, 2-burner stove, Onan 2800 generator, Comfortably sleeps 3 adults or maybe two adults, two children. Respond with ph# or email and I can provide pics and other details. We don’t need to sell but will as both of us are facing health issues. ~est. $20,000 or so.

Forgot to mention this is a factory Ford 190 Falcon. Mileage is 99435. No leaks on vehicle or engine, trans, etc., all 3 new fuel pumps, both batteries replaced, tranny flushed, inverter plate replaced, full tune-up, manual awning works fine, AC/heater work good, plus several other minor things done and a few yet to be including a few cosmetic things. Currently winterized.

10 Amazing Class B RVs That Actually Sleep 4

Class B RV that Sleeps 4

There are many things to love about Class B RVs, including their small compact size, easy drivability , and improved fuel efficiency.

But one of the biggest drawbacks of Class B RVs is their often limited sleeping capacity, as most Class B camper vans can only sleep two.

The good news, however, is that there are several Class B RVs on the market today that can actually sleep four.

So to help you find all the best Class B RVs that can sleep four , we’ve highlighted the 10 most popular choices below.

Popular Class B RVs That Sleep 4 (Least to Most Expensive)

1. winnebago solis pocket 36a, quick specs.

  • Average Cost : $85,000
  • Chassis : RAM ProMaster
  • Sleeping Capacity : 3 (4 with Optional Front Cab Air Mattress)
  • Length : 17 Feet 10 Inches
  • Bathroom : Cassette Toilet Only

The Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A is the cheapest Class B RV you can buy that can sleep 4 .

To see other cheap Class B RVs, check out our blog post “ Top 8 Budget Class B RVs Under 100K: Affordable RV Travel “.

Designed for RVers looking for a simple and affordable campervan, the Solis Pocket 36A is the little brother to the Solis (#3 on this list).

Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A Floorplan

Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A Floorplan

Just because the Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A is the cheapest and one of the smallest Class B options though, doesn’t mean it’s a bare-bones campervan.

As the Solis Pocket 36A still has plenty of features to make your next camping trip comfortable as well as enjoyable.

Starting with the campervan’s challenging but achievable four-person sleeping capacity.

Accomplished through a rear Murphy bed, a convertible dinette booth, and an optional front cab air mattress that lays over the front seats of the van.

The 36A also offers a small kitchenette, and a surprising amount of seating, thanks to its front swivel seats and ingenious convertible dinette booth with five different modes.

Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A Interior

Due to its cheaper price and smaller size though, Winnebago did make some cuts to the Solis Pocket 36A.

Most notably the lack of a bathroom, as the 36A only offers a cassette toilet located under the convertible dinette booth.

In addition, the Solis Pocket also lacks a water heater, inverter, and generator.

If you’re looking for the cheapest and smallest four-person Class B though, these might be sacrifices you’re willing to make.

For more info on the Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A, check out Winnebago’s website by clicking here .

2. Pleasure-Way Tofino

  • Average Cost :  $87,000
  • Chassis :  RAM ProMaster
  • Sleeping Capacity :  4
  • Length :  17 Feet 9 Inches
  • Bathroom :  Not Available

The Pleasure-Way Tofino is another super cheap Class B RV that can sleep four .

A nd if you want to do m ore stealth camping or want to keep a lower profile, the Tofino is the way to go.

As this compact camper van looks like a large passenger van from the outside , thanks to its lower roofline and tinted windows that run the length of the van.

Pleasure-Way Tofino Floorplan

Pleasure-Way Tofino Floorplan

It’s worth pointing out though that because this Class B RV is built on the RAM ProMaster low roof chassis, you will not be able to stand up inside the van.

As the Pleasure-Way Tofino only has a 5-foot ceiling height .

Unless the pop-top is up and you’re standing in the sleeping loft access point in the middle of the van.

The good news though, is that this sleeping loft access point is right next to the small kitchenette in the van.

Allowing you to stand up while making a meal, as long as the pop-top is up.

Pleasure-Way Tofino Interior

Also, something else to keep in mind is that the Tofino lacks a bathroom, which means it cannot be considered a self-contained camper van .

What this camper van lacks in ceiling height and features though, it makes up for in price and stealthiness.

So if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly and stealthy camper van, the Pleasure-Way Tofino might be the right fit for you.

To learn more about the Pleasure-Way Tofino, check out Pleasure-Way’s website by clicking here .

3. Winnebago Solis 59P

  • Average Cost :  $90,000
  • Length :  19 Feet 9 Inches
  • Bathroom :  2-Piece Wet Bath

The Winnebago Solis is one of the most affordable and popular Class B RVs on the road today.

As the Solis has everything you could want in a self-contained camper van, including a 4 person sleeping capacity, a pop-top sleeping loft, a little kitchenette, a four-person dinette, and a small wet bath.

Winnebago Solis 59P Floorplan

Winnebago Solis 59P Floorplan

First introduced in 2019, Winnebago has been producing the Solis since 2020 and currently offers two trim levels for the van.

Including the 59P and 59PX, which affects its length, floorplan, sleeping arrangements, and several other key factors.

Regardless of trim level though, they both have the capability to sleep four.

For more information on the Winnebago Solis 59P, check out Winnebago’s website by clicking here .

4. Thor Motor Coach Compass 23TW

  • Average Cost :  $120,000
  • Chassis :  Ford Transit
  • Length :  23 Feet 7 Inches
  • Bathroom :  3-Piece Dry Bath

If you’re looking for more interior space and sleeping capacity in a Class B RV, you might want to consider a Class B+, as they offer more of both.

By utilizing cutaway rear box construction for the main living area, like a Class C motorhome , instead of being confined to the interior space of a standard work van.

And one of the best and most popular versions of a Class B+ is the Thor Motor Coach Compass 23TW, which has a large full-body slide, a queen-size bed, and a 4-person sleeping capacity .

Thor Motor Coach Compass 23TW Floorplan

Thor Motor Coach Compass 23TW Floorplan

Plus, this Class B+ from Thor also features a full three-piece dry bath, which is a huge upgrade from the small wet bath usually found on most standard Class B RVs.

The amenities don’t stop there though, as this feature-packed Class B+ also offers a large 4-person dinette booth, ceiling ducted air conditioning, modern euro-style cabinetry, and LED lighting throughout.

For more info on the Thor Motor Coach Compass 23TW, check out Thor’s website by clicking here .

5. ModVans CV1

  • Standard Cost :  $125,311
  • Length :  19 Feet 11 Inches

While you might have been familiar with a few of these Class B RVs on this list, one that you probably haven’t heard of is the ModVans CV1.

Similar in concept to the Pleasure-Way Tofino from above, the ModVans CV1, uses a low-roof Ford Transit chassis.

For a complete list of every Class B RV built on the Ford Transit chassis, check out our blog post “ Ford Transit Class B RVs: The Complete List “.

Making this Class B an excellent choice if you want to do more urban or stealth camping.

But unlike the Tofino, which uses a single hinge point to create the upper bunk sleeping loft, the CV1 actually raises the entire roof using electric actuators.

Allowing you to walk the full length of the campervan, once the roof is raised.

ModVans CV1 Interior

And because of the two separate sleeping areas in the van, including a lower bunk positioned east-to-west and an upper bunk positioned north-to-south, this Class B RV can comfortably sleep 4.

One thing that might be a deal-breaker for some though is the lack of a bathroom, as the CV1 does not offer a dry or a wet bath.

So if you’re looking for a self-contained Class B, this is not going to be a good fit.

If you want a versatile and compact small motorhome that excels at stealth camping though, you might want to take a closer look at the CV1.

For more information and to order a ModVans CV1, check out ModVan’s website by clicking here .

6. Coachmen Cross Trail EV 20BH

  • Average Cost :  $130,000
  • Length :  24 Feet 1 Inch
  • Bathroom :  3-Piece Wet Bath

The Coachmen Cross Trail has a variety of trim levels and floorplans to choose from and is available in both a Class B+ and a Class C configuration.

Choosing the Best Camper Van For You

From mega off-road monsters, stylish luxury sleepers, and minimalistic compact campers, you have lots to choose from. There are a few key considerations to make when choosing a camper van to fit your lifestyle and budget:

  • Size: Camper vans come both big and small, with plenty of middle ground to choose from as well. You should consider exactly how much space you need by estimating how many people will be traveling and how much gear you need, including necessities, personal items, and recreational supplies. Camper vans typically sleep anywhere from 2 to 6 people, and will have seating arrangements fit to match the sleeping capacity. Look for creative storage options, such as storage underneath the retractable awning or campers that utilize crawl space, which will help you feel less cramped.
  • Amenities: You can enjoy all the luxurious amenities you have at home, like your usual kitchen appliances, climate control, advanced technology, solar power, and more, or you can opt for something more basic, depending on your needs.
  • Gas Mileage: You can expect the gas mileage in a camper van to be less than that of your family car or personal sedan, but it doesn’t all have to be bad. Some models have mileage ratings as high as 20 mpg, while others are considerable low. To cut down on gas costs, consider models with an alternate energy source, like solar panels.
  • Appearance: Camper vans are built onto pre-made chassis’s, so the exterior design depends heavily upon the chassis used. The Mercedes-Benz 144 chassis is a popular and common choice to many camper van builds, but you can find options that utilize Dodge, Ford, Fiat, Volkswagen, and other models, too.

8 Best Camper Van with Bathroom for Easy Van Living [2022]

Two Wandering Soles Campervan

Photo source: Two Wandering Soles Campervan

Just because camper vans are designed for camping, it doesn’t mean you have to brave the wild butt-naked.

Whether you’re deep in the campervan community or in the process of changing your life, having a bathroom built in your RV is a huge help.

Forget all those stinky old public bathrooms, campervans that come with a toilet and shower are the way to travel―both in style and in comfort. But it’s more than just the convenience.

We’ll tell you why.

Make your van life a thousand times better with these 8 best campers that come with bathrooms ―shower and toilet included .

What Do You Do When Nature Calls?

Ever wondered how people living in motorhomes take a dump or stay clean?

One of the most common questions we get asked is, “ where do you go to the bathroom? ”

And to be fair, it’s a good question, especially if you’re planning to go off-grid. (We once asked ourselves that too!)

When you have nothing but your campervan, the only place you can really use a toilet is behind the trees. Not the most comfortable, but, hey, it does the job. Or you can always stop by public restrooms.

You can opt to get yourself a gym membership to access the free washing and locker room.

But, these options are NOT convenient.

When you’re traveling across 50 states, you’ll always have to be on the lookout. And, when you do find one, chances are they’re not gonna be very clean. Public bathrooms are just plain nasty!

8 Best Camper Vans with Bathroom Worth Checking Out

Your best bet is a campervan that comes with a shower and toilet.

We’ve made your search easier with our list of 8 best campervans with a shower and toilet.

1. Thor Motor Coach Tellaro 20AT -Best Overall

travel van sleeps 3

Thor Motor Coach Tellaro 20AT is our pick for the best campervan with a shower and toilet . Why? For many good reasons!

On the outside, it has a very sleek and modern look. On the inside? It’s nothing short of your expectations. It’s fully packed and furnished with everything you need. And we mean EVERYTHING.

Queen bed? Check.

Pop-up sky bunk? Check.

A galley complete with a fridge, standard microwave, gas stoves, and a spacious stainless steel sink? Check.

Swivel seats, benches, and even a collapsible dinette, Tellaro 20AT has your basic needs within arm’s reach. But, it gets even better .

travel van sleeps 3

The List Goes On…

Unlike your regular campervan bathroom, the Tellaro 20AT can tank up at least 6 gallons of black water for toilet and shower wastes, and up to 27 gallons of freshwater tank for long showers and dirty dishes.

With this, you don’t need to worry about pee sloshing around the toilet bowl inside the van nor finding a RV dump station at every state you cross. It packs a mean PUNCH.

The camper van’s bathroom comes with a wet bath , cassette toilet , and water heater for you to get the most of your stay.

But, wait, there’s more.

(We’re sorry if this feels long to read, but we can’t help but gush about it!)

travel van sleeps 3

There’s a lot of storage and extra space inside! Overhead cabinets span the sides of the campervan, while a pop-up bunk can be raised and retracted for you to fall asleep under the stars.

It can easily fit a family of three, without feeling too squeezed inside as what most campers do when they’re going off-grid.

(Btw, the pop-up sky bunk comes with solar panels too.) Pretty cool, don’t you think?

Aside from that, there are many charging stations, multi-media dash, and even Apple or Google play to keep you entertained. The van is equipped with the basics and so much more .

The Best Part?

Thor Motor Coach Tellaro 20AT is pet-friendly !

If you think that you can’t travel with pets , this will make you guess again.

There’s a hideaway water and food dish inside along with fabrics and leatherette materials that are scratch-resistant. The residential vinyl flooring makes it also easier to clean up any mess your pet has made. Tres Bien!

With its reasonable price point, we think that Tellaro 20AT is a well-made and well-balanced camper van great for first-timers and full-timers.

2. Winnebago Revel Camper Van -Best Value

travel van sleeps 3

Even though it’s smaller than the Tellaro by one feet , the camper van offers a closet-full of space to store ALL YOUR LIVING ESSENTIALS.

The kitchen has many panels, while the roof rack serves as a place you can store large equipment such as bikes, surfboards, and even a kayak, all the things you need to enjoy a nice day out.

The camper van is equipped with its own toilet, wet bath, and hot water system that’ll make your van life so much easier.

Comparing it to the Tellaro, Winnebago Revel is a great class of its own. With a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Chassis , it’s built for terrific adventures.

They are expensive, but so is regret.

You can never go wrong with a Winnebago, especially with this class B camper van model .

3. The Jayco Redhawk 31 XL -Best Budget Pick

travel van sleeps 3

No worries! Jayco Redhwak 31XL got you covered.

Easily the biggest camper in our list of best campervans with bathrooms, the model is 32-feet long. Meaning? There’s tons of additional space!

travel van sleeps 3

Unlike Class B camper vans, the Redhawk has MORE ROOM TO OFFER and is specifically designed to be a motorhome all-year-round for those off-grid.

It can seat as many as 8-10 people and easily sleeps a family of 4 without any fuss.

The Redhawk includes a queen-size bed, twin beds, and a sofa―all WITHOUT SACRIFICING the sleeping room or any other area. No pull-outs, no retractable dining tables, NOT a problem.

Even the bathroom has more space to spare. Because it’s a class C RV home, the Redhawk comes with a wet bath and a composting toilet , which is larger than your standard portable toilet and cassette toilet.

What a relief it is to have a composting toilet in your RV, right?!

Fast Fact: A composting toilet allows you to empty all that nightmarish sludge SO MUCH MORE EASIER than a cassette type. Cassette toilets literally spell Satan when you’re emptying them.

Wanna know the best part of having a composting toilet? No more plumbing, no more water used, and more black tank! That’s right!

It’s a perfect choice for campers with a big family in need of a bigger bathroom, bigger closet, and bigger galley.

Also, did we mention that it also has a more budget-friendly price tag ?

At less than half the price of the Winnebago and Thor models, you get yourself an affordable luxury.

Sounds TOO Good to Be True…

While the Redhawk has many pros that make it a great choice as your first motorhome, there’s one trade-off: its massive size.

Although Class B campers can be tight on space and a bit more expensive, it’s more fuel-efficient and it does let you get away from all the travel restrictions that come with a large truck.

Easily PARK ANYWHERE with Class B campers, it gives you the enjoyment of traveling.

On the other hand with class C RVs like the Redhawk, you can’t .

Understanding the difference between the types of camper vans is the key to making the right choice.

That said, the Jayco Redhawk 31XL is still a solid, reliable deal if you’re into large vans and if you don’t mind having to pay extras in stations. Tiny living doesn’t have to feel like so with it.

  • Budget-Friendly
  • Additional space for extra bed and leg room
  • Full bathroom with composting toilet and shower
  • Large freshwater tank capacity
  • Taller interior height
  • Inconvenient Travel
  • Exterior Length: 32’5’’
  • Interior Height: 7′
  • Toilet: Composting Toilet
  • Black Water Tank Capacity: 32 gallons
  • Starts at: $84, 950

4. Chinook Bayside Campervan – Best Splurge

travel van sleeps 3

Everything about it screams luxury , from the ultra-soft leather seating, to the custom high gloss wood, to the large sliding door for easy access, and down to the state of the art entertainment and security system.

travel van sleeps 3

The campervan includes:

  • 4-camera viewing system on the interior
  • Two high-definition digital air television
  • Theater surround sounds
  • Deluxe lighting
  • A large two-door refrigerator

And all the works to make you forget you’re living inside a motorhome.

The Bayside is a nice escape from the wild outdoors, and it’s the best splurge for a campervan with its own bathroom (a wet bath and a cassette toilet) and quality design.

The Bayside Build

travel van sleeps 3

Like the Winnebago Revel, this class B camper uses a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Chassis , making it one shell of a unit.

It’s good for adventures because it’s fuel-efficient. Diesel will TAKE YOU FAR without needing to find a gas station often. On top of that, the quality of construction is superb.

Chinook s are simply built to last.

Our Only Complaint?

There’s no rooftop and a dedicated coach heating system, which makes the air feel a little bit stale after you’ve been there for a long time.

But, it’s not something to worry about.

Overall, the Chinook Bayside Camper is a good splurge for a touring coach and a weekender.

5. Fleetwood RV Irok FSL -Best Eco Friendly Option

travel van sleeps 3

Sounds a lot like the Fleetwood RV Irok FSL .

This sleek campervan is one of our favorites on the list, and it’s easy to say why: it’s special.

travel van sleeps 3

A Tour of the Fleetwood Irok

As soon as you pry open the sliding doors, you’ll immediately be greeted with a screen door. We bet you haven’t seen this one!

The screen door is there to let the breeze in and keep out the bugs. The same thing when it comes to the rear door, there’s a drop-down screen.

Over to the driver’s seat, it’s pretty much standard with all the things you can find in the usual car: touch-screen radio, back-up camera, steering wheel, and multiplex lighting to control all the lights.

In the kitchen:

  • 1 kitchen burner induction stove
  • 1 basin sink with cover
  • 1 tiny sized fridge
  • 1 conduction microwave

While the bathroom might not be as large as the Redhawk or the Bayside, it still covers the basics: a wet bath and a cassette toilet to help you stay clean while on the road.

For the sleeping area, there’s a couch that can be folded and transformed into a queen bed.

Campervan Specialty

Now let’s talk about what makes it so special.

Solar panels.

The Fleetwood Irok has a capacity of 100 watts of solar power , which itself can do SO MUCH to save our planet.

But that’s not all.

The campervan utilizes an espar gasoline coach heater , meaning you can CUT A HECKLOAD on fuel costs, because espar gasoline doesn’t take fuel off your tank directly, unlike propane.

Plus , it has twice the cooling abilities.

The Downside?

It’s a tight squeeze, especially if you’re on the taller side.

For those hitting the six feetmark, you might find yourself bumping into the closet and panel.

Also, the lack of rooftop pop-ups does no t help the dilemma.

  • Does not use propane for coach heating
  • Available in 2-floor plans
  • Can feel a bit cramped; interior is shorter than the standard class B campers
  • Small bathroom
  • Exterior Length: 21 ft.
  • Interior Height: 6’1″
  • Starts at: $95,988

6. Ford Transit Nugget Plus High Roof – Best Weekender

travel van sleeps 3

In the list of best camper vans with a bathroom, you can never take out the Ford Transit Nugget Plus High Roof .

Even though the Nugget is the smallest camper with a bathroom , it’s a class B camper classic.

A Class-B Camper Classic

The Nugget ― hilarious name, btw, comes complete with all your basic needs: a kitchen, living area, and a full head room , all making up a unique “L” shaped set-up to enjoy meals with family members together.

Did someone say space-saver?

The Ford Transit is your best choice if you want to maximize living space conditions – there’s an additional sleeping room with the convertible loft, aside from the queen bed that comes with the model.

However, what it doesn’t have is a shower.

You’re probably staring wide-eyed at us. ‘If it doesn’t have one, why is it on the list?’ is what you’re thinking.

Well, to be fair, bathrooms are never complete without showers. It just makes van life so much easier.

But, wait, we weren’t finished yet.

While it doesn’t have a wet bath like all the others, it has a fixed cassette toilet and a super convenient drop-down sink beside it at the rear end.

And for the price of $66,000, it’s not a bad deal . After all, Westfalia does offer the OPTION OF A SHOWER on the exterior.

As a whole, the Nugget is just the perfect camper for a quick weekend getaway.

  • Designated living room and kitchen area
  • Bathroom does not have shower; only a toilet and second sink
  • Exterior Length: 17’6”
  • Interior Height: 6’7”
  • Black Water Tank Capacity: Not Specified
  • Starts at: $66, 950

travel van sleeps 3

A question worth a thousand bucks is “how can you fit your life in a 19-feet long rectangle and still feel comfortable?”

Well, the simple answer is the Airstream Interstate 19 .

This is an equal match for young couples starting out their van life. It has 4 seats for you to entertain your friendly neighbor, a sofa turned into a queen bed overnight, kitchen, and pantry storage.

Our favorite part of the camper is the bathroom which includes both a wet bath shower and toilet, surprisingly spacious for the tiny room.

Built for Comfort

Reviews for the Airstream Interstate 19 all point to the campervan’s undeniable comfort .

Because it uses a Mercedes Benz frame, it’s simple and hassle-free to drive. You don’t have to break your back when you’re driving around the entire day.

In short, Airstream 19 is a great choice for a campervan with bathrooms, because it’s compact, nimble, comfortable, and easy to drive.

WARNING: Airstream is a tad bit more expensive than the other choices, but the Mercedes Benz engineering really doesn’t disappoint when it comes to safety.

  • Comfortable
  • Easy to drive
  • Will only fit 2; otherwise feels a bit cramped
  • Exterior Length: 19 ft.
  • Interior Height: 6’2″

Are Campervan Bathrooms Worth It?

Congrats! You made it all the way through our list of best campervans with bathrooms to go off-grid.

Now it’s time to decide if getting one is the right choice.

Here are the benefits of having a shower and toilet inside your camper:

  • Convenience: You’ll never have to search for bathrooms along the way, go out in the middle of the night, or dig a hole when you have RV toilets.
  • Comfort: Popping a squat while you answer the call of nature puts a strain on your muscles, whether you’re physically fit or not.
  • Privacy: Having a toilet and shower inside allows you to do business without letting anyone know about it. You can easily watch Netflix while you’re at it.
  • Personal Hygiene: Enough said. It’s just so much cleaner when you have your own bathroom.

Because bathrooms can take up extra space inside and come with added costs, we understand that some people are hesitant to make the shift.

But trust us , it saves you from public bathrooms anxiety.

[Van Life Q&A]: What’s Life Like Off-Grid?

A little guide to give you an idea of life off-grid.

How Do You Maintain the Campervan Bathroom?

Right off the bat, one of the first things to consider when you’re choosing a camper is shower and toilet maintenance.

While campervans without a shower and toilet are free from dumping wastes, those with, unfortunately, have to do the dirty work of cleaning the bathroom, shower head, and toilet.

Not a fun activity, but a necessary evil.

Fortunately, there’s good news.

You don’t have to do this often. You only have to dump your blackwater tank when it’s 2/3 full . And, if it’s possible, only get rid of it every two weeks or so.

Longer dumping intervals mean more time to break down solids or your poop, for lack of better terms.

Is It Possible to Poop in the Toilet?

Without a doubt, yes.

Toilets inside campervan bathrooms should work just like an ordinary toilet bowl in your family home. But, of course, we still need to take extra care of it since RV bathrooms’ toilets have a two-step flush system.

Here are some tips to remember when flushing the campervan toilet:

  • Two step-flush every time . Push the handle halfway down to fill the toilet bowl with water, then push it down all the way to flush into the holding tank. This allows the toilet to fill with water, so that water in the holding tank will break down the solid waste.
  • Don’t throw trash or any solids down the drain. These could be tissues or leftover food.

Can You Install a Shower and Toilet Inside the Camper?

If you’re already a proud campervan owner and aren’t too keen on the idea of investing in another RV home, there’s always the option of installing a shower and portable toilet inside.

However, be warned. It’s not that easy.

For toilets, your best bet and the simplest solution is a portable toilet for you to store, stash, and take wherever you go.

You won’t need any tools for installation. In fact, it can’t be mounted on anything, unlike a classic RV toilet . Simply, bring and place where you want to do your business.

For complete wet bathrooms, it’s more difficult as you’ll need to do some complicated plumbing and renovations. We don’t recommend doing this, because it doesn’t save you from any expenses, rather you’ll have to shell out a bit too and things won’t always work out.

But if you’re interested to know more, here’s a good read on how to install a shower inside your campervan .

Don’t deny yourself of the basic living comforts.

Campervans are designed to help you camp in comfort, and these 8 best campervans with bathrooms, complete with a shower and toilet, do a swell job of making van life easier.

The 15 Best Camper Vans for Getting Away From It All in Style

The first years of this decade have already provided ample evidence that it’s important to get away from our daily lives from time to time.  And you don’t have to suffer the airport hordes or step foot on a plane to do so. We currently find ourselves in something of a golden age for luxury trailers, which has made it easier than ever to take your life on the road without sacrificing many, and in some cases any, of the comforts of home. And now, there are plenty of manufacturers and dedicated conversion shops giving the same treatment to vans and other similar vehicles. They may not be able to sleep as many people as their hulking cousins—with one key exception—but these all-in-one wonders come loaded with perks such as high-end kitchens, Wi-Fi-enabled multimedia systems, and plush beds. Plus, their relatively smaller size means they are more agile, off-road friendly, and easier to park. Below are 15 campers that will let you experience #vanlife in comfort and style.

Our Best Camper Van Picks

Best overall: airstream interstate 24x, best for off-roading: jayco terrain, best for weekend getaways: mercedes-benz eqt marco polo, best for off-the-grid trips: winnebago solis, best for cyclists: outside van tails, best for camping (anywhere): storyteller overland beast mode 4×4, best to live in: loki expeditions discovery series, best all-electric option: tonke eqv.

  • Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl

Best With a Bathroom and Shower: Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Best for $50,000: caravan outfitter free bird, best for families: winnebago boldt, best for winter road trips: sportsmobile sprinter 4×4, best conversion: boho old faithful, best for diy couples: ford transit trail.

Airstream Interstate 24X

Airstream. Thankfully, the company isn’t afraid to branch out. Just look at the  Interstate 24X , the trailer maker’s attempt to take the camper van to new heights. Built on the bones of a  Mercedes-Benz  Sprinter—like a lot of the models on this list—the vehicle has everything you need to rough it in comfort. Airstream has done a lot to maximize space in its climate-controlled cabin. A modular dining table doubles as a desk, and it can be easily converted into the largest sleeping area in a Class B Motorhome. There’s also a full mini kitchen and bathroom. You can take the van off-roading, too. In addition to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine that churns out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque, it also comes equipped with four-wheel drive, a height-adjustable suspension and all-terrain tires. Pricing for the all-around beast starts at $213,850.

Inside the Airstream Interstate 24X

Special Features: —A climate-controlled living area that has been designed to maximize available space. —A modular dinner table, a mini-kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet.

Jayco Terrain

Jayco is best known for its hulking travel trailers, but like Airstream, it can do compact, too (well, compact enough to fit in a parking space, that is). The US company’s new  Terrain  model, which starts at $192,000, is an adventure van designed for those who like to veer from the beaten path. As the name suggests, it’s designed for off-roading, with a turbo-diesel V-6, Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a rear hitch strong enough to tow an additional trailer if you need more room. Inside, it’s a little spartan compared to some other options on this list, but its kitchenette can be converted into a sleeping area with room for a full-size bed, as well as plenty of storage space beneath. There’s even a built-in awning when you need some shade in the summer months.

Special Features: —Equipped with Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a heavy-duty tow hitch. —Kitchenette can be converted into a spacious sleeping area with room for a full-size bed.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT Marco Polo from the side The Concept EQT Marco Polo

Mercedes-Benz clearly doesn’t want to relinquish its title as the go-to van maker for outdoor lovers. At last year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the German marque showed off a prototype based on its upcoming all-electric EQT van called the Marco Polo. The stylish EV has everything you need for a weekend at the campground and is more compact than the ubiquitous Sprinter. When the van’s rear seats are folded down, the back can be used as either a sleeping area with room for a double bed or a cooking and entertaining space. The kitchen doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the other entries on this list, but it does have a pull-out stove, fridge and sink. There’s also a pop-up, roof-mounted tent if your travel party includes more than two. The Marco Polo is a concept, but Mercedes will sell a module that will allow you to turn any EQT into a camper van when the $51,500 EV goes on sale in the spring.

Inside the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT Marco Polo The Concept EQT Marco Polo

Special Features: —All-electric power train, so you don’t have to worry about doing too much damage to nature while you explore it. —Its  camping  gear—from the bed to the kitchenette—is part of a module that can be fully removed when you need more cargo room.

Winnebago Solis Pocket 36B

The Winnebago Solis is for adventurers who don’t want to be confined to the campground. The van is available with an optional power kit that has everything a group of up to four adults needs to spend a few days off-the-grid. The setup, which includes an inverter, a shore battery converter, a battery energy converter, a solar energy converter and an alternator energy optimizer, can produce enough power to keep the van and all its features running for up to 72 hours. On top of that, the van features a kitchenette, a convertible entertainment area with room for a double bed, and a full-width wet bath.

The Winnebago Solis Pocket 36B's dinette can be converted into a full-size bed

Special Features: —A unique power kit that can provide enough power to spend up to 72 hours off the grid. —Still has all the features you’d expect from a luxe camper van, including a full-width wet bath.

The Outside Van Tails next to a cyclist

If you like to mix biking and camping, Outside Van has the vehicle for you. The Portland brand’s  Tails  model is a camper van designed with cyclists in mind. The van, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, has everything you need for a few days away from home, including a kitchenette, a roll-over sofa and a convertible mattress. But what really sets it apart is the rear of the vehicle that’s basically an on-the-go bicycle repair shop, with a fold-down work table, an air compressor and Molle panels to hang all your tools. If that wasn’t enough, it somehow has room for six bikes, even when the bed is laid out for the night.

The interior of the Outside Van Tails

Special Features: —The back of the van is basically a bicycle-repair shop with a fold-down table, an air compressor and plenty of storage space for tools. —Has room for six bikes, even when its convertible sleeping area is out.

Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4x4

This latest offering from Storyteller Overland, based in Birmingham, Ala., is a true adventure van. The  Beast Mode 4×4  is the outfit’s most feature-packed model yet and was designed specifically for overlanding (as you may have guessed from the company’s name). It’s a true 4×4 powered by a 188 hp turbodiesel V-6 that’s strong enough to tow an additional 5,000 pounds. Its slick retro-style livery is offset with loads of useful off-roading gear, too, such as an LED light package, a roof rack and a side ladder and custom wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich K02 tires. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to relax after a day of exploring, including a cushy lounge that can be converted to a full-size sleeping area. There’s even a climate-control system to ensure you’re comfortable no matter the weather outside. It’s priced at a flat $198,746, for everything listed above.

Inside the Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4x4

Special Features: —Turbodiesel V-6 sends 188 hp of power to all four wheels and is strong enough to tow 5,000 extra pounds. —Surprisingly cushy lounge for an off-roading beast.

The Loki Expedition Discovery Series Expedition Vehicle

Let’s get this out of the way: the Loki Expeditions Discovery Series isn’t technically a camper van. It’s a giant expedition vehicle, but because its cabin is installed directly onto a heavy-duty truck chassis you also don’t need anything to tow it. The vehicle’s cabin is what separates it from anything else on this list. Loki Expeditions has turned a shipping container—yes, you read that right—into a full-featured living space that has all the amenities you’d expect to find in a luxury apartment, including a full kitchen with a large fridge, an entertainment area with a U-shaped banquet, and a wet bath with a cassette toilet. It’s also big enough to sleep six adults, with room for two in the dedicated bedroom and four in the entertainment area. And because the heavy-duty vehicle, which starts at $550,000, has all-wheel drive, you can take it practically anywhere.

The Loki Expedition Discovery Series's living area and kitchenette

Special Features: —Cabin has all the features you’d expect to find in a well-appointed apartment and can sleep six adults. —Built on a burly heavy-duty truck chassis that gives you the freedom to venture off the beaten path.

The Tonke Mercedes-Benz EQV Touring with its pop-up tent opened

Looking for an EV you can take to the campground. The upcoming EQV just might fit the bill. Despite its relatively compact size—it’s smaller than the ever-popular Sprinter—Dutch camping outfit Tonke has managed to outfit it with everything you need to spend some time communing with nature. It has an entertainment area that doubles as a workspace along with a kitchenette, both of which can be converted into a two-person sleeping area with a simple flip of a bench (a roof-mounted, pop-up tent means it can sleep two more, too). Best of all, there are two variants available—the Touring, which is designed for long road trips, and the Adventure, which is aimed at casual campers.

Inside the Tonke Mercedes-Benz EQV Touring

Special Features: —Fully electronic power train means you won’t have to worry about filling up the tank (though the battery is another story). —Can sleep up to four even despite its relatively compact size.

Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl

The Terracamper Tecrawl with its awning and kitchenette out

The Tecrawl isn’t a camper van per se, but it’s hard to leave something this cool off a list like this. Terracamper’s latest offering is based on one of Mercedes-Benz’s most legendary vehicles, the G-Wagen . The German shop has dreamed up a modular accessory kit for the luxury 4×4, that starts at $11,900 and includes a roof-mounted tent, a convertible sofa, and a pull-out kitchenette with a fridge box. Thanks to the ingenious setup, the boxy SUV can sleep up to three and act as your home base next time you want to rough it for the weekend. And because it’s a G-Wagen you can take it as far off-road as you want.

Inside the Terracamper Tecrawl's rear cargo area

Special Features: —A G-Wagen but has room for up to three people to sleep. —Packs a brawny powertrain that’s well-suited for off-road adventures.

Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Thor Motor Coach makes camper vans for those uninterested in making sacrifices. With the  Sanctuary , the company has taken Mercedes-Benz’s already excellent Sprinter 2500 4×4 and turned it into something you could easily live on—on or off the grid. The off-road-ready vehicle comes in two configurations—the 19P ($148,680), which features a back bench that converts into a bed, or the 19L ($151,060), which has a fixed double bed. Even with the bed there’s still plenty of room for other creature comforts, including a bathroom, an entertainment area with a TV and a kitchen with a sink, a dual-burner cooktop, a convection microwave oven and a fridge. An Onan 2500 LP generator keeps everything up and running, too, including an A/C system you can leave on for eight hours at a time. There’s also retractable power awning when you want to spend some time outdoors.

Inside the Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Special Features: —Full-featured bathroom has a sink, a shower and a toilet. —Available with your choice of either a convertible or a fixed bed.

The Caravan Outfitter Free Bird from the side

Caravan Outfitter’s third-generation Free Bird isn’t the most feature-laden camper van out there, but it has everything you and the family need to spend a weekend (or more) at the campground. The van, which starts at $50,810, is built on the relatively compact Ford Transit Connect platform but still has room for a full-size bed, a multi-purpose table that can be used as a dinette or workstation, and a pull-out kitchenette with a sink. Because it’s smaller than other options on this list, it only has room to sleep two, but there are several enticing add-ons, including roof- and rear-mounted capsule tents, in case you’re traveling group includes more people.

Inside the Caravan Outfitter Free Bird

Special Features: —It’s the rare camper van that’s small enough to be comfortably parked inside your garage. —Caravan Outfitters offers several intriguing add-ons so you customize it to your liking.

Winnebago Boldt

Airstream isn’t the only famous RV maker that’s gotten into the camper van game. Winnebago actually sells several, and our favorite is the luxe  Boldt . Despite being nowhere near as long as one of its campers—it caps out at 22 feet in length—the $230,276 van has everything you’d expect from the larger vehicle, including dedicated living and sleeping areas, a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom equipped with a shower. You also have several interior decor options to choose from, each of which delivers an updated take on classic Winnebago style. The Boldt is designed for paved roads and campgrounds, but if you want a more rugged ride, the brand also offers the off-road-ready  Revel.

Inside the Winnebago Boldt

Special Features: —Stretches 22 feet bumper to bumper, meaning there’s plenty of room for you and yours. —Enough space for dedicated entertaining and sleeping areas.

Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4

Take one look at  Sportsmobile’s Sprinter 4×4  and it’s clear what its designers had in mind: off-roading. Whether you go with the 12- or 14-foot configuration, the Texas outfit’s stripped-down take on Mercedes’s ultra-popular van comes equipped with a 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission and pumps out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque. That should be more than enough to tackle even the toughest terrain. Inside, you’ll find a spacious living area with a full-featured kitchen. If you want even more room, you can also opt for a pop-up sleeping area that’ll make it that much easier to lounge in comfort.

Inside the Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4

Special Features: —Well insulated throughout, but also has space for a propane furnace or heater. — 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 and four-wheel drive mean it can take on any terrain.

The Boho Old Faithful from the side

Struggling to find a camper van that’s just right? Boho might be able to help. The Arizona-based company specializes in conversions and will work with you to create the vehicle of your dreams. The company offers several 20- to 24-foot layouts—of which the most popular is the appropriately named Old Faithful—that can be further tailored to meet your needs, whether your priority is multi-season versatility, lots of cooking space, or spending serious amounts of time on the road. The company also offers plenty of cool add-ons too, like wood paneling and flooring.

Inside the Boho Old Faithful

Special Features: —Versatile layouts that can be further customized so that you’re getting the exact van you want. —The wooden interior option looks better than it has any right to.

The 2023 Ford Transit Trail from the side

Ford’s ready to knock the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter off its perch. The Detroit giant unveiled its own camper van, the Transit Trail, last fall. The adventure-ready vehicle is based on its uber-popular commercial van but is taller, wider and outfitted with protective body cladding. It’s also powered by a potent V-6 that sends 310 horses and 400 ft lbs to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Right now, Ford seems content to let the $65,975 vehicle be the base for the camper van of your dreams, but it comes loaded with a slew of features that will come in handy at the campground, including a drillable wall you can use to install shelves, a kitchenette or furniture, along with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and a back-up camera. It also available in three body configurations—medium-roof, standard length; high-roof, standard length; and high-roof, extended length—one of which should fit your needs.

Inside the 2023 Ford Transit Trail

Special Features: —It’s basically a blank slate for you and your partner to create your own dream camper. —Still comes with premium features such as a 12-inch infotainment screen and a back-up camera.

Three Marvelous Days in Moscow

Three Marvelous Days in Moscow

April 3, 2017 by Robert Schrader 2 Comments

I’ll never forget the sense of anticipation I felt looking down onto Moscow as my flight from Warsaw descended, the city shrouded in the pitch black of early winter. The Russian capital had long been on my bucket list, and in just a couple of hours I’d be walking across Red Square toward St. Basil’s Cathedral, hopefully with some snow falling, to begin my 3 days in Moscow.

My Moscow itinerary lived up to all of my expectations. Well, except for one—I imagined a city as grand as Moscow would be difficult to comprehend in a short period of time, but that was not the case. Indeed, seeing Moscow in 3 days provided me a nuanced impression of the city, albeit one I want to build upon with future visits.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Moscow has a reputation as one of the most expensive cities in the world, which means it should be one of the most expensive cities in the world for hotels. Thankfully, at least as of early 2022, the Russian ruble is still very weak, which means that prices for even “nice” hotels in Moscow or comparable to or even lower than their counterparts in the rest of Europe.

If you’re looking for a boutique stay in Moscow, I recommend the Stoleshnikov Boutique Hotel ; otherwise, the city is full of hostels and budget hotels that will serve you during your three days in Moscow itinerary.

How to Divide Up Your 3 Days in Moscow

Day 1: moscow 101.

Although Moscow is a sprawling metropolis, many of the city’s key attractions are centralized—namely, around Red Square , located just north of the Moskva River . The obvious sights here include the impressive Kremlin and iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral but extend north, to the Bolshoi Theatre and also southward, to the river itself and the dramatic vistas the bridges over it provide.

travel van sleeps 3

To be sure, you should spend most of your first of three days in Moscow in close proximity to Red Square, in spite of how much more geographical ground there is to discover. Punctuate visits to important points of interest by getting an ice cream at the grandiose GUM department store, or treat yourself to a panoramic view of central Moscow by heading up to the roof of Children’s World department store.

Day 2: Beyond Red Square

Your strategy changes on the second of your Moscow 3 days itinerary, when your focus broadens. How this happens, of course, may vary. If it’s art and culture you’re after, for example, you might make a visit to the Russian State Library and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts . For architecture, you could visit less-celebrated Moscow churches such as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior , make a tour of the so-called “Seven Sisters” (a.k.a. Stalin’s Skyscrapers ) or even ride the Moscow Metro to Moscow City , which is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe.

Moscow is also home to a great number of green spaces, most notably the massive Gorky Park , but most dramatically VDNKh —located near the base of the Ostankino TV Tower , it features monuments to all the former Soviet republics. Tverskaya Street , a thoroughfare that extends northward from Red Square.

Day 3: Exploring the Golden Ring

Moscow is large and full enough of things to do that you could remain in the city center for the entirety of your third of Moscow 3 days, but I recommend traveling instead out into the so-called “ Golden Ring ” of historical cities around it. Well-known cities include Suzdal , Vladimir and Kostroma , and are all defined by colorful and well-maintained kremlins, which feature dramatic and picturesque churches and other structures that will be highlights of your Moscow 3 day itinerary.

travel van sleeps 3

If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, the easiest Golden Ring city to see as part of your 3 days in Moscow itinerary is Sergiyev Posad , which is accessible via direct suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station —the journey time is about one hour. Sergivey Posad’s Kremlin is not only picturesque (my Russian friend commentated that one church within it, Mikheevskaya Tserkov , is “Russia’s Sistine Chapel”) but is a great place to enjoy a traditional, filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the dumpling house Varenichnaya . Both sweet vareniki filled with sour cherries, or hearty potato and chicken pelmeni will fuel you as you explore Moscow in three days.

Is 3 Days Enough in Moscow?

I can’t lie: This Moscow itinerary is packed full, even by my standards. You’ll have to wake up early every morning and sleep late every night in order to fit it all in, to say nothing of how much more difficult it will be if you travel to Russia in winter like I did (more on that in just a few paragraphs).

Of course, whether you pare down my recommendations to a more appropriate curation of Moscow in 3 days or can devote 5 days or even a week to Moscow from the outset, one thing is for certain: Moscow is far more beautiful and dynamic than the Soviet reputation that precedes it would suggest.

Other FAQ About Travel to Moscow

How much money do i need per day in moscow.

Depending on the exchange rate, you can expect to spend anywhere between 75-200 USD per person, per day in Moscow. How much you spend also depends whether you’re traveling individually or as part of a couple or group, how many meals per day you enjoy in restaurants (versus on the street/in shops) and the relative luxury or simplicity of the Moscow hotel you choose.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

The good news? You can get by only speaking English in Moscow, particularly in the immediate and heavily-touristic center of the city. The trick? While English-language signage is increasingly common, and while you may not need to speak Russian, being able to read the Cyrillic alphabet will make your time in Moscow (and in Russia more broadly) a great deal smoother.

When is the best time to visit Moscow?

Traveling to Russia during colder months not only forces you to move slower (and look less stylish—well, for most of us) as you explore what to see in Moscow in 3 days, but the lack of daylight can make it difficult to squeeze everything into a particular day, and even to stay awake. The good news? Summer, while not necessarily as iconic as winter, is an absolutely gorgeous time to visit Moscow.

The Bottom Line

Is a Moscow itinerary 3 days in length enough? Although Moscow is a huge, sprawling city, you don’t need a huge amount of time to get to know it. Spend day one exploring Red Square and surrounds, day two exploring Moscow’s secondary attractions and day three taking a day trip into the so-called “Golden Ring.” You’ll get a colorful impressive of Moscow—and, more importantly, a nice introduction for your trip to Russia , since it will likely start here.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
