Our Santa Barbara Wine Tours are ★★★★★

Awesome tour. Rooted Vine was highly recommended by our hotel, and they surpassed expectations. Iaon was superb. He was friendly. Very talkative about the area and wine. His wine knowledge and ability to explain things was the best we’ve heard. We were picked up on time in a very clean and spacious SUV. Felt very safe in the environment from Covid. He wore his mask the whole time, and wore the mask properly over his nose! The 3 private vineyards we went to were good. The wine and the environments and the servers were perfect. He also gave us recs for places to go on the following days. Overall it was a very special day in the Santa Barbara area.

5 of us just took this tour in Santa Barbara and were extremely glad we did! On time pick up from our hotel in large comfortable van with water. Beautiful drive up the coast and inland. Austin our guide was friendly, informative and relaxed. We enjoyed all the wineries very much and seeing different parts of the wine country. Lunch was fantastic, we ordered from a menu with about 20 different meat or veggie sandwich and salad choices. So glad we chose this tour and I highly recommend it!

Wonderful Santa Barbara winery tour! Our preferences were kept in mind when winery choices were made. Our host (and owner of the company), Ian, was very knowledgable about all things "wine" and was great company. We were a group of 5 ladies and our tour was private. The tour is a GREAT bargain! I would definitely choose this winery tour again and I will be recommending Rooted Vine Tours to all my friends.

My wife and I seek the locals-style experience whenever we travel, and this journey made our trip all the worth-while. Ian's knowledge about the wine and the unique Santa Barbara County climate, the sun-filled drive through the mountains to quaint towns, and the tale told by the winemakers themselves were all part of a magical journey forever forged in our minds. Take the time to spend a day and treat yourselves to this priceless memory. Ian took great care of us and is an amazing host.

What a fabulous day with Iaon of Rooted Vines Tours. Iaon started out asking all of us what wines we preferred and structured our day from there. He is so knowledgable and a lot of fun. Every stop just got better and better. I would highly recommend you take the day to take one of Iaon's tours so worth it and can't wait to go again.

APPELLATION

google-5-star-review-png-13.png

We used Paul at Appellation thru a recommendation  from the concierge at the Ojai Valley Inn. He called and planned our whole itinerary  based upon our conversation.... what an amazing and unforgettable day! We met and tasted with two different winemakers and toured their vineyards. He thought of every detail and provided us with a fantastic lunch too. 5 STARS doesn't  do justice!

Mark G. Chef, L.A.

What people say.

Appellation Wine Tours was the highlight of our trip to Santa Barbara. He was recommended  by the front desk at our hotel and the experience   couldn't  have been more memorable. He took care of everything! We did a private barrel tasting and met the winery owners. We tasted and bought some out of this world wines! I highly recommend  that you utilize Paul if you are wine tasting in Santa Barbara.

Dan B. Sedona, Az.

Incredible day out in the vineyards! Best Anniversary present ever! How  romantic...we told Paul that we loved Champagne so he arranged for multiple private tastings with the owners of different wineries who specialized in sparkling wines. He also curated a special picnic lunch with incredible cheeses. This was absolutely the BEST!

Sophia & Ken, Chicago, Ill.

Sommelier Paul Tilson

Unlike most wine tour companies that have a staff of guides, Appellation tours are led exclusively by the owner and certified Sommelier Paul Tilson.

Paul has over 20 years of experience in the wine industry, including as Wine Educator & Senior Wine & Cuisine Manager for Meadowood Napa Valley, Restaurant & Wine Director at the The Ojai Valley Inn and Food & Beverage Director at The Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara. His knowledge, experience, passion, and relationships are unparalleled in the Ojai and Santa Barbara region.

Paul introduces his guests not only to the amazing wines and beautiful wineries of the region but also to the dynamic and passionate individuals who produce them. Crowded tasting rooms are bypassed, for tastings in vineyards, production facilities or private estates. Public tasting rooms can be visited by request if guests are interested in specific larger wineries.

Paul will work with you to tailor the perfect adventure, whether you are experienced connoisseurs or new wine enthusiasts. Let Paul be your guide for an unforgettable viticultural experience when you visit our eclectic, world-class appellations.

Tour Information

Luxury 4x4 SUV for tours consisting of 2-6 guests and utilize a Sprinter Van for tours between 7-12 guests.  This includes lunch, tasting fees, and transportation.

Wine is available for guests to purchase at all the wineries.

All lunches are gourmet Pic Nic style, I utilize tablecloths, cloth napkins, dishware and flatware to create a beautiful setting for the picnic lunch. I have a Michelin background and ensure the lunch experience is upscale and memorable.

Any dietary restrictions can be accommodated, 48 hours advance notice is appreciated.

My typical tour consists of 2-4 wineries, all tours are private experiences except for the lunch venue, (but I will always have a pre-arranged lunch venue which will be either a table, section and area which will be reserved and exclusive to my guests only).

All tours are curated individually for my guests, I welcome correspondence and/or conversation to determine and satisfy any personal wine preferences and expectations of my guests. Preferred varietals and/or wine styles, level of interest in education, and how one prioritizes purchasing wine are just a few of the details I consider while designing a unique experience.

A typical itinerary will be a pick up at a local hotel in Santa Barbara or Ojai, between 9:30 - 11am and a return between 3-5pm (all guest preference and pre-arranged). Typical tours last 5-7 hours.

What a fantastic time we had touring the wineries last week!  Our customers loved the fact that each location provided a different experience.  The lunch was fabulous, the wineries superb, and the activities at Artiste creative and fun!  We will definitely use Coastal Concierge in the future!

Shari Stafford, CMP Sr. Meeting Planner – Southern Union Company

We can’t imagine a better tour that the one we had. Hope you have a great year.  We certainly had a great tour.  We hope to do it again sometime with another couple we know who also love pinots.

I just wanted to let you know how pleased the Henderson family was with their touring this past weekend.  The patriarch can be difficult to please sometimes.  So if he said the tours were great, I believe they were truly great. Thank you to you and your staff for taking such good care of them.  I hope to send you more business in the future.

Lori Jones, CTC Leisure Travel Advisor

I have built your name and information into my contact list.  I am certain that the next time we head north for a wine tasting experience it will be as a customer of Coastal Concierge…why drive, when we could spend the day being hosted by such a top notch operation!

Grenda B. David, M.B.A., M.A.

Just a note of thanks for your exceptional tour of Santa Barbara plus that wonderful picnic lunch (please thank Ben). You have a good thing going and when I have clients to Santa Barbara, I will certainly recommend your company. In the meantime, have a good season.

My in-laws just celebrated their 60th birthday in Santa Barbara this weekend, and they could not stop raving about your inn and the wine blending excursion you put together. They kept insisting how everything was "First class all the way"... The wine excursion on Saturday was really special and they felt like VIPS.

Wine Tours by Grapeline in Napa Valley

Are you yearning to embark on a journey through lush vineyards to the place where premium winemaking got its start in America?  In Sonoma Wine Country, every vineyard has a tale to tell, and every sip is a celebration of the region known for its history, diversity, beauty, and wine quality.

When “Count” Agoston Haraszthy, known as the father of California viticulture, founded Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma in 1857, he became the pioneer of a wine region that is now home to more than 425 wineries.

A hallmark of Sonoma Valley is its diversity. From family-owned gems to avant-garde estates, there's a vineyard vibe for every wine lover.  You can uncork a Pinot Noir that reflects the fog-kissed Russian River Valley, sip a coastal Chardonnay with a crispness that echoes the cool ocean breezes that kissed the grapes as they ripened, or indulge in a bold Cabernet Sauvignon from the sun-drenched hills of Dry Creek.

This scenic region isn't just a place; it's a feeling. Each winery is a masterpiece, offering a unique blend of history and innovation. From the first pour to the final note, Sonoma wines are a symphony of flavors that dance on your palate.

Some of my favorite places to visit include:

1. The Russian River Valley because it offers some of the tastiest Pinot Noirs you’ll ever have. This area is known for its cool climate, influenced by the nearby Pacific Ocean and the Russian River, which runs through the valley. The weather is particularly well-suited for growing cool-climate grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. If you’re here, go to Landmark Vineyards and try the 2021 Grand Detour Pinot Noir . Aged in French Oak, this wine features aromas of black licorice, cranberry, strawberry, and violet flower. This versatile wine pairs perfectly with roast duck, grilled salmon, or a wild mushroom pizza.

2. For robust Cabernet Sauvignons, Dry Creek Vineyard is the place to go. Savoring the exquisite 2019 50th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon is truly an honor. It’s a beautiful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Personally, I enjoy it with a nice grilled steak. You can also pair it with lamb chops, braised short ribs, or blue cheese. I particularly love it with dark chocolate because the wine's tannins complement the bitterness of the chocolate, creating a satisfying combination.

3. Lastly, when you’re in Sonoma Valley, you have to visit the family-owned vineyard, Benzinger Family Winery . Whenever I visit during the summer months, my go-to wine is the 2022 Sonoma County Rosé . It’s a Grenache-based blend with concentrated aromas of strawberry and citrus that pairs well with grilled shrimp, ceviche, or a Caprese salad.

The local culture is a rich experience rooted in wine, but offering so much more. When you’re here, stroll through charming town squares, explore artisanal cheese shops, and pair your favorite wines with farm-to-table delights. It's a sensory journey that extends well beyond the bottle.

So pack your corkscrew and head to Sonoma for an unforgettable journey. Whether you're a seasoned sipper or a wine novice, Sonoma Wine Country invites you to uncork, unwind, and create your own vintage memories. Let's raise a glass to the elegance of Sonoma – where every pour is a taste of California's liquid poetry.

The Neighborhoods of the Urban Wine Trail

The Funk Zone offers an eclectic mix of galleries, shops, restaurants, wineries, and breweries. Comprising approximately 10 blocks, adjacent to the ocean, train station, and downtown Santa Barbara, this vibrant neighborhood offers something for everyone. Converted warehouses, decked out with a range of colorful murals, serve as the perfect backdrop for this “happening” area.

Located just steps off State Street, in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, the Presidio Neighborhood is home to a variety of premier wine tasting rooms, high-end restaurants, casual dining, and boutique shops. Centered around the historical site of the last of the Spanish fortresses (“presidios”), the Presidio Neighborhood offers the opportunity to explore the history of Santa Barbara, along with some of the area’s finest food and wine.

Below the riviera between Anacapa St. and Milpas St. you will find Santa Barbara’s Midtown. As you walk down the “Haley Street Corridor” you will discover an industrial area with Santa Barbara’s best hidden gems including restaurants where the locals eat, great breweries, and fully functioning wineries where you can watch the winemakers in action. Eat like a local, see the wine barrels, taste the grapes, and experience the craft of the wine industry.

Santa Barbara’s downtown is the historic and entertainment core of the city. Filled with world-class restaurants, lively clubs, magnificent theaters like the Arlington and Granada, this is a wonderful place to stroll and take in the sites. Naturally, the area is also home to excellent tasting rooms, offering some of the area’s best varietals. So whether you want to take in a scenic view from the historic Courthouse tower, or just relax with a flavorful glass of wine, a visit to downtown is a must.

Goleta, “The Good Land”, has evolved from a sleepy locals-only community into an up and coming destination for entertainment, adventure, and dining. Nestled between the foothills and the winding coast, Goleta has become a location known for hidden gems in the micro-brewery and wine world. With the University nearby, Goleta has a youthful, laid-back vibe that is just now being discovered by the tourism industry. If rubbing shoulders with locals and enjoying good times and great beaches is your thing, then welcome to Goleta!

10 Best Santa Barbara Wineries to Visit

Santa Barbara County is home to some of the most exciting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah in California. Much of that success is thanks to a geological oddity: Coastal valleys that run west to east (as opposed to north to south), and serve as superhighways for chilly ocean air. Combine that with a wonderfully varied terrain, complex terroirs, and a passionate community of grape growers and winemakers, and it's no wonder that Santa Barbara County — and its appellations of Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, Happy Canyon, and Ballard Canyon — is so popular among consumers and respected among professionals. Here are 10 of the best wineries to visit in the Santa Barbara area, listed alphabetically. — Richard Nalley

Richard Sanford was among the first to extol the virtues of the cool-climate Pinots and Chardonnays from Santa Rita Hills, and his deft touch is still evident in these lovely wines, though Alma Rosa was sold to the Zorich family in 2014. The gorgeous, design-magazine-worthy Buellton tasting room employs recycled Douglas fir, harvested in Washington in 1912, for its benches, bar-tops, and shelves. And the wines, the majority produced in runs of less than 400 cases, are fabulous. Indoor and outdoor tastings feature five wines and cost $25. Visit Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. almarosawinery.com

Hippest tasting room ever? Babcock's hangar-sized "retro-rock-and-roll" venue in Lompoc is chockablock with vintage photos, antler chandeliers, mid-century furnishings, board games, and a party atmosphere. The old tasting room is now the cozy, funky Soulstruck Lounge for private events. For those who'd like to base themselves here, Bryan Babcock's own handsome Mediterranean house is available, B&B-style. Best of all for fans: The Pinots and Chardonnays. Visit Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. babcockwinery.com

Brewer-Clifton

Brewer-Clifton's site-specific Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are critical darlings and consumer favorites, and some of them may be challenging to find in some states, giving all the more reason to stop by and experience them right here. Reservations are available Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and are all done on the patios off the tasting room. For $25, the Vineyard Designate Flight is a delicious introduction to their single-vineyard bottlings from the Sta. Rita Hills. brewerclifton.com

Dierberg/Star Lane

Dierberg and Star Lane wines are excellent any time you pop a cork, but even more so when savored in the chic, barn-like setting of the Sta. Rita Hills tasting room, just to the back of their famous Drum Canyon Vineyard. Tours of that vineyard are available by appointment, and while reservations for the tasting room are recommended, they're not required. The experience includes six wines, costs $35, and is available Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. dierbergvineyard.com

Fess Parker

The late television actor's family runs a mini-empire in Los Olivos, which includes the main winery tasting room — rustic-chic and very welcoming — the sparkling wine-focused Bubble Shack, and the upscale, boutique Fess Parker Inn. The winery turns out a considerable range of expressions, including the Rhône-oriented Epiphany label, most of it of high quality, and at a welcoming range of prices. 90-minute tastings can be booked online. fessparker.com

Foley Estates

Foley's 3,500-square foot, and very comfortable Lompoc tasting room is a familiar stop for Sta. Rita Hills wine tourists. Foley's Pinots and Chardonnays may get most of the attention, but don't overlook the rosé of Grenache. Tastings are by reservation only, daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and can be booked online. While you're on their website, make sure to check out their roster of events; the Mother's Day brunch, for example, looks fantastic. foleywines.com

Lompoc Wine Ghetto

If you're more focused on the wine than the winery, you'll definitely will want to check out this surprising enclave off of 12th Street. Several wineries have tasting rooms here — Fiddlehead, Ampelos, Pali, and more — making it a great place to really see why this part of California is so unique and special. Check the website, and the individual producers' listings, for hours and pricing. explorelompoc.com/lompoc-wine-ghetto

One of the region's most sought-after labels, Melville is a popular stop for lovers of Santa Barbara Syrah, Pinot Noir , and Chardonnay. Fortunately, they make visiting easy. The Santa Barbara Tasting Lounge is open Sunday - Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.; and the tasting room at the estate winery hosts tastings Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. $25 gets you five samples, though that fee vanishes if you purchase three bottles. melvillewinery.com

Sanford has been producing world-class Pinot Noir for more than four decades — in fact, it's home to the oldest Pinot vines in Santa Barbara County. Yet a visit to this historic property is about more than the past, as the team here has its eyes trained on the future, too. The hourlong, $30 Estate Tasting is by appointment only, every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and includes six single-vineyard and single-block bottlings. An All-Terrain Vehicle Experience can be reserved for $100 per person Saturdays at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. sanfordwinery.com

One of Santa Barbara County's trailblazers, Zaca Mesa continues to produce fine Rhône-style wines at relatively gentle prices. The winery offers a wide range of tasting experiences, from Mixed Flight and Reds-Only Flight tastings in the courtyard to the Reserve Flight at The Lounge and Courtyard, and beyond. You can even book the tables beneath The Vineyard Oak Tree if you'd like to open full bottles with your family and friends. Reservations are available online. zacamesa.com

8 Fabulous Things To Do In Beautiful Santa Barbara, California

S panish-Moorish architecture, the Pacific Ocean, and the Santa Ynez mountains define the beauty of Santa Barbara, located just an hour and a half north of Los Angeles, California. This charming coastal city with a laid-back ambiance entices visitors to enjoy the sandy beaches, museums, galleries, fine dining, and wine tasting. From the moment you take a breath of fresh salty air or stroll storied State Street, you’ll understand why it’s often referred to as the American Riviera.

My trip was partly sponsored by Visit Santa Barbara.

1. Santa Barbara Harbor & Stearns Wharf

Miles of sandy beach and surf beckon visitors to Santa Barbara. Surfing, swimming, and working on a tan are all part of the fun, but Santa Barbara has a lot more to offer. Head to the harbor to catch a whale-watching excursion, rent a sailboat; go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or rent jet skis, fishing charters, and more. Almost all water sports and rentals are going to leave from the harbor or Stearns Wharf.

The Santa Barbara Harbor is also a lovely spot to take a walk along the breakwater, admire thousands of yachts, relax over a waterside drink, or dine with a view.

Santa Barbara Water Taxi

For a fun and affordable narrated tour around the harbor, take the Lil Toot Water taxi between the Santa Barbara Harbour and Stearns Wharf. Rides are one-way only and are on a first-come-first-served basis. Lil Toot serves the public on weekends but is available for private rentals during the week.

Brophy Brothers

Brophy Brothers is a perennial favorite with both locals and visitors to Santa Barbara. Take a seat at the bar and soak up the view of the harbor, while chatting with whoever is sitting next to you, though there is table seating too. Brophy’s is always crowded so prepare to wait for a table. Order one of their signature Bloody Marys with oysters on the half shell. The ceviche is also a solid choice.

Pro Tip: If you’re staying near the beach, leave your car at your hotel and walk to the harbor.

2. Stearns Wharf

The most visited tourist attraction in Santa Barbara, Stearns Wharf has had a tumultuous history, imperiled by many traumatic events, both natural and manmade. The oldest working wooden wharf in California, a walk along the wharf comes with fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez mountains.

You’ll find a variety of restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, and tourist shops. Enjoy an ice cream from The Great Pacific Ice Cream Co . while strolling the wharf and don’t miss the dolphin sculpture, which marks the entrance to the wharf and is a popular spot for photographs.

Pro Tip: Every Sunday the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show lines Cabrillo Boulevard from Stearns Wharf to East Beach. The show features 200 local artists working in every medium imaginable from jewelry making to painting, to ceramics, and digital art. I always attend this show if I’m in town on a weekend and never fail to find something to bring home.

Hendry’s Beach

Hendry’s is also known as Arroyo Burro Beach Park. It’s a lovely sheltered beach and you can walk for miles, which many people do with their dogs. Hendry’s has a grassy area with picnic tables and barbecue grills, and there’s a place to rinse your feet after a walk in the sand.

I usually go to Hendry’s to eat brunch at the Boathouse At Hendry’s Beach. It’s casual but the food is fantastic. There’s usually a wait but that allows you time to work up an appetite with a  nice walk on the beach. Try the huevos rancheros.

Pro Tip: Parking is very limited, so if you plan to dine there, arrive early.

Leadbetter Beach

Leadbetter is just south of the harbor. It’s a wide sandy beach with tall palm trees, volleyball nets, picnic tables, grills, and public restrooms. There’s also a café called Shoreline Cafe where you can eat lunch and dinner.

Pro Tip: The Santa Barbara visitor’s center has three locations and one is just a stone’s throw from Stearns Wharf at the intersection of Garden Street and Cabrillo Boulevard.

4. State Street Promenade

State Street cuts through the heart of Santa Barbara for ten blocks and runs to Stearns Wharf. It’s the perfect place to wander in and out of unique shops like Lewis and Clark . You can also visit galleries, stop for a coffee or a bite, and go wine tasting at one of the tasting rooms located in El Paseo. Part of the street has been closed since 2020 allowing restaurants to expand their outdoor dining options. Upper State Street is home to the historic Granada Theater, a beautiful venue for the performing arts. Check in advance to see who or what is on.

Pro Tip: Be sure to wander down the many side streets and alleys off State Street where you’ll discover pretty fountains and hidden courtyards.

5. Santa Barbara Museum Of Art

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art opened in 1941, in a building that had been a post office. The collection includes textiles, photography, ceramics, prints, paintings, and ceremonial art. A recent renovation includes expanded galleries and the Luddington Court, a captivating introduction to the wonderful museum. We especially enjoyed the photography exhibition and paintings included some of the most notable names in art history.

6. The Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Across the street from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, a major landmark in a city known for its architecture. The Spanish-Moorish style, colorful tiles, and wrought iron work make the courthouse a popular place for photo shoots, and the sunken gardens are prime for romantic weddings.

Completed in 1929, it is a working courthouse but visitors are welcome to explore. Be sure to visit the bell tower for sweeping views of Santa Barbara. In the summer there are movies, concerts, and various events on the lawn.

7. Old Mission Santa Barbara

Often referred to as the Queen of the California Missions, this is certainly one of the prettiest missions with its signature rose gardens and fountain. The Old Mission Santa Barbara was established on the feast day of St. Barbara in 1786 by Franciscan Friars. One of twenty-one missions established in California, it is the only mission that has been under the continuous guidance of the Franciscans since it was founded.

There’s an expansive lawn in front and you’ll often find visitors camped out there enjoying a bit of sun. The mission is still active and may close at times for services and funerals. Be sure to check the website for hours. You can also take a self-guided tour.

8. Wine Tasting

When I first became a regular visitor to Santa Barbara, we always went wine tasting in Santa Ynez, forty minutes away. Today there are over 20 tasting rooms in Santa Barbara representing some of the best producers in the area for excellent pinot noir, chardonnay, sparkling wines, and more. You no longer need to drive to Santa Ynez, you can simply follow Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail to one of the many excellent tasting rooms.

The Presidio

The Presidio (which means fort in Spanish) is the heart of old Santa Barbara. El Paseo, California’s first shopping center is located in this neighborhood. Tucked away in the many side streets are several tasting rooms, each with its own charm and wine style. Grassini, Jamie Slone, and Au Bon Climat are all located in El Paseo. Kunin Wines is just a block away. While you’re sipping fine wine, admire the Spanish architecture and learn the history of Santa Barbara.

Grassini Family Vineyards

Grassini Family Vineyards specializes in Bordeaux varietals, especially cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc. The tasting room is cozy and it’s a good idea to reserve a table. Try the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and chocolate pairing.

Au Bon Climat

Au Bon Climat is known for its pinot noir and chardonnay and keeps an extensive library collection. Founder, the late Jim Clendenen, is largely responsible for putting Santa Barbara County wines on the map. Anything you try here will be excellent, but of course you must try one of the outstanding bottlings of pinot noir.

Kunin Wines

Kunin Wines is a small production winery making Rhone-style wines plus zinfandel, syrah, and viognier. The indoor tasting room can be loud when it’s full but if the weather is nice, there’s an outdoor patio. Kunin also has a tasting room in the Funk Zone. Try the 2019 Grenache Alisos Vineyards.

La Paloma Café

For a taste of historic Santa Barbara head to La Paloma Café , just a few blocks off State Street in the Presidio. The original stucco building opened in 1915 as an Italian bakery. In 1940 it opened as La Paloma Café and was an instant success.

Enter through the bar downstairs and stop to admire the circa 1941 mural above the bar and the original barstools, now recovered with cowhide. The food is casual, the portions are ample and delicious. Try a Mezcalita cocktail if you like smokey flavors or the hibiscus margarita for something more refreshing. We ate the pork shoulder carnitas, which had a complimentary smokiness with the mezcal… a good pairing.

Where To Stay

The Eagle Inn is an attractive bed and breakfast property that looks like it might have been someone’s home. This is an excellent location if you want to stay close to the beach in a quiet area.

The Eagle Inn has a variety of king and queen rooms, some with in-room spa tubs and balconies. If you need more space you can book a casita, which is like a small condo with a private entrance. Room amenities include Wi-Fi, a coffee maker, a fridge, a complimentary refillable water bottle, wine glasses, and a corkscrew. Note that the Eagle Inn is pretty low-fi and not all rooms have USB ports. Bikes are available and there is plenty of free, off-street parking. A convenient and affordable location for a beach holiday.

Ramada By Wyndham

Ramada By Wyndham is an older property that has been tastefully updated. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. They have high-speed Wi-Fi, a microwave, coffee makers, and a fridge. Most rooms have a full-size balcony as well and some face a pretty inner courtyard. There’s also a solar-heated pool and hot tub.

Located just off of Highway 1, the address is Santa Barbara but you’re basically in Goleta, home to the University of Santa Barbara. It’s only a five to ten-minute drive to Santa Barbara Harbor. The Ramada offers a Santa Barbara Value Pass with discounts on all sorts of activities like golf and wine tasting.

Santa Barbara is a beautiful destination that’s convenient to the big city (Los Angeles) but feels worlds away. Anyone who enjoys nature and fine food and wine in a casual setting will love Santa Barbara.
