All about city tours in Abu Dhabi

City tours in Abu Dhabi allow you to experience this glittering city from all angles.

Between the skyscrapers lie immaculate palace lawns, adventure islands and natural refuges, such as Mangrove National Park. A city tour of Abu Dhabi places all the highlights of this diverse city and the great outdoors within reach.

There are several travel and tours agency providers in Abu Dhabi – Big Bus Tours has two routes, which can be enjoyed from a refreshingly breezy open-air bus.

Other excursions combine cultural attractions such as Heritage Village with Yas Island theme parks, while boat tours glide between landmarks on the glittering Arabian Gulf.

Abu Dhabi tour rides make seeing all the best parts of the city simple, so all you need to worry about is making unforgettable memories.

The best city tours in Abu Dhabi

See many of the most important landmarks on the Abu Dhabi city tour by bus – it’s a hop-on, hop-off experience which transports you between key attractions and neighbourhoods.

There are two routes. The red route focuses on urban attractions such as Corniche Beach, Marina Mall and Qasr al Hosn. The Presidential Palace and Emirates Palace can also be admired on this route.

The green route, meanwhile, begins at Abu Dhabi Mall and takes a wider tour of the Abu Dhabi region, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque taking star position.

The green route stops on Yas Island, where a range of exciting family attractions lie, including Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

On this route, the Abu Dhabi tour bus also stops at Eastern Mangroves, on the cusp of the luscious natural landscapes of Mangrove National Park.

This Abu Dhabi tour is a planned excursion lasting for a full day, which can be booked with Etihad.

The first stop is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is a majestic place of worship and magnificently marble clad. Inside, you can expect to see intricate works of Islamic craftmanship.

Next up is Heritage Village, where traditional Bedouin life is revived via a reconstructed desert village complete with craft workshops. From here, it’s on to Saadiyat Island – where you’ll find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, an architectural wonder and home to impressive artefacts from across the globe.

This Abu Dhabi city tour package also comes with entry to one of Yas Island’s most popular attractions – Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

Here, you’ll get to experience the thrills of the famous Formula Rossa, one of the world's fastest rollercoasters.

Tour the city from the water with the Yellow Boats tour – to get spectacular views of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic buildings. In a coastal city whose history is entwined with the Arabian Gulf, travelling upon the waves on a guided tour just makes sense.

There are several Abu Dhabi city tour options with the Yellow Boats, which can be experienced in less than half a day in the morning, afternoon or evening.

The Corniche Tour takes just one hour, brushing the iconic coast and sweeping past Heritage Village towards man-made Lulu Island.

The Yas Tour provides plenty of facts about Abu Dhabi’s most action-packed area, and you’ll see Yas Marina and Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

During your tour, look out for marine life, which is abundant near the mangroves.

City tours in Abu Dhabi

An Abu Dhabi city tour is an enriching journey – there are several types, each presenting a unique itinerary and travel style. Here’s how to experience three of the best.

Getting to Abu Dhabi Mall

The red and green routes of Big Bus Tours intersect at Abu Dhabi Mall, so it’s a great place to hop on. You’ll find it just off Al Maiyani Street, a 12-minute drive from Corniche Beach.

Getting to Emirates Palace Marina

The Abu Dhabi Yellow Boats tour takes off from Emirates Palace Marina. This is located near the UAE Presidential Palace and Qasr al Watan.

Getting to Etihad’s tours

Etihad’s Modern Abu Dhabi City Tour, which comes with access to Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi, offers pickup from any location in central Abu Dhabi – airport or hotel pick-up can be requested when you book a tour.

Things to know before you go

Allow plenty of time for big attractions.

If you’re using a hop-on city tour to acquaint yourself with big attractions such as the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi, then be sure to plan enough time for each segment of your day.

Allow two hours each for both the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, which are both full of things to do. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the UAE’s largest mosque, with a main prayer hall that can accommodate 7,000 worshippers and plenty of smaller rooms to marvel at, too.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has 23 permanent galleries to discover. Leave yourself with plenty of time to get the most from the Arabian peninsula’s largest art museum.

Prepare for warm weather

Abu Dhabi city tours are always warm, no matter what time of year you visit so it’s important to be well prepared. Pack plenty of water, sun cream and a hat for shelter from the sun, especially if your tour is via boat or open-top bus.

Long and lightweight clothing can help you to keep you cool – however, since many attractions are air-conditioned, it is also a good idea to carry a warmer layer, too.

City Tours: FAQs

Why Visit & What to See on Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It’s also the richest of the seven Emirates, home to some of the most prestigious projects and remarkable architectural landmarks. So no trip to the UAE would be complete without at least a short introduction to this beautiful city!

Just like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a quickly growing city with many new attractions, one more impressive than the other. So you have to understand that there is no way to see all the best places in Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai. There are simply too many options and you would need several days in Abu Dhabi if you want to see all the top sights.

So when looking for a day tour to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, you have to decide which of the top sights and attractions you absolutely do not want to miss. Once you make the choice, it becomes easier to pick the right tour that fits your interests.

Here are some of the TOP attractions in Abu Dhabi:

  • Sheikh Zayed Mosque – the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi, included in pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours.
  • Qasr Al Watan – UAE Presidential Palace (sometimes also referred to as the Royal Palace) – an actual visit inside is only included with very few tours.
  • Etihad Towers . Many tours pass here, but only a few include a visit to the Observation Deck.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi – the largest museum in the Gulf region, among others, displaying artworks from The Louvre and other top museums in Paris . There are just a few tours that visit here.
  • Yas Island where you can find the following theme parks: Ferrari World , Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros. World , and SeaWorld . This is not the best place to visit on a day trip since you could easily spend a day at each of these theme parks and still not see it all. So if tours from Dubai include Yas Island in their itinerary, at best, it’s a half-day visit to Ferrari World (most tours that mention Ferrari World, usually only stop for a picture at the parking in front of it).

Here are some additional sights sometimes included in some Abu Dhabi tours:

  • Abu Dhabi Corniche – a waterfront road with bike paths and a nice pedestrian promenade. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Founders Memorial – a monument. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Emirates Palace – this luxury hotel (full name – Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental ) is one of the most expensive hotels ever built. Some tours include a visit, but most just drive by.

Good to know: The best Abu Dhabi day tours include a visit to 2-3 of the ‘TOP attractions’. Depending on the tour and how much time you spend at the main landmarks, they sometimes include one or two short stops at some of the ‘additional sights’ listed above.

However, some tours only seem to offer great value at first sight. When you look deeper, you realize that the majority of your time will be spent in the car or with short stops at ‘cultural’ attractions, such as a vegetable and dates market, Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, or local art galleries. While this could be a nice addition to the main sights, there are so many better things to do with just a day in Abu Dhabi than spend your precious time shopping… So choose your tour wisely!

Below, you can find our hand-picked selection of the best Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai.

Best Abu Dhabi Tours from Dubai

As I said, there are so many Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai that the choice can look daunting. Based on the research I did for our recent trip, I made a selection of just a few VERY BEST options. This was my personal shortlist.

Here are some of the best-rated Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai , with a short overview of just the main landmarks that you actually visit:

  • Premium Full-Day Sightseeing Tour (+-9-10 hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan. This is the tour we chose and can highly recommend if you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in a day. You can also book this same tour including lunch at a traditional restaurant (we had lunch there too and it was excellent).
  • Full Day Tour with Ferrari World (+-10 hrs). This tour includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Ferrari World, as well as a stop at Heritage Village. If you want to see the Mosque and ride some of the fastest rollercoasters in the world, this is by far the best tour. Most others only include a photo stop at Ferrari World.
  • Full Day Trip with Mosque & Louvre (+- 9hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi.
  • Half Day Tour (+- 5hrs). This popular tour only visits the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. It’s a good option if you are really short on time.

Good to know: Most of the tours listed here are small-group tours, but they are also available as private tours . You can choose from different options once you select the number of people and travel dates.

Further below, you can read a short review of the tour that we chose and see some more pictures of the places that we visited on this Abu Dhabi day trip.

Review of Our Abu Dhabi Sightseeing Tour from Dubai

As already mentioned, we chose this highly-rated guided tour for our Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip.

Just to be clear – we do not organize these tours or have anything to do with the company that runs them. Like you, we are just travelers who do their own research, pay for the experiences we like to have, and hope that we made the right choice.

This Abu Dhabi tour was not cheap, but it brings you to the most impressive places in Abu Dhabi. We felt that it offers really good value. If you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in just a day, then you really cannot go wrong with this tour.

Here is what our Abu Dhabi tour looked like:

Pick up in Dubai & Drive to Abu Dhabi

We booked the tour starting at 8:45 AM. The evening before the tour, I received a WhatsApp message from the tour company informing us that they would pick us up at 8:15 AM.

The driver was on time and we stopped to pick up two other people along the way. He then brought us all to yet another hotel where we transferred to a small bus (our group had 18 people).

Good to know: The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi normally takes about 1.5 hours, but it can also take much longer due to busy traffic. The same on the way back.

PRO TIP: When booking a full-day tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, don’t make any other plans for that day – that way, you don’t have to worry about busy traffic or potential delays. If you are planning a half-day trip , I would also foresee some buffer time, or opt for an afternoon tour (or a ‘sunset’ tour, as they call it) – that way, you can still do something else in Dubai in the morning.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

Drive through Abu Dhabi

On the way to Abu Dhabi, our guide informed us that we would start our tour with Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace and visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at the end of the day. This is because there was a big cruise ship in town and since pretty much all visitors go to the Mosque, it’s extremely crowded in the morning.

This was a good decision, indeed. By the time we got to the Mosque, it was just pleasantly lively. I can’t imagine what it must look like in the mornings when several gigantic cruise ships are visiting.

On the way to the President’s Palace, we passed Yas Island and could see the famous Ferrari World and other attractions in the distance. We also saw Saadiyat Island with the Abu Dhabi Louvre – also from quite far away. Once in the city center, we drove past the Corniche – Dubai waterfront – and saw the Founders Memorial as well as the Emirati Palace.

You only get to see all these places from the bus, but it gives you an idea of what Abu Dhabi is like.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Watan

Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace sits in a huge opulent complex by the sea overlooking the city in the distance. The main highlight here is Qasr Al Watan .

This magnificent palace might remind you of the famous Taj Mahal in India, but this one was built just recently – between 2010 – 2017. Its architecture and grandeur will take your breath away!

The palace was built using some of the finest materials including Italian marble, gold, Swarovski crystals, and gigantic handmade carpets. It is absolutely magnificent and I would even say that it’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet.

Quite frankly, I don’t understand why it’s not as popular as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These two places are just as impressive and both are absolutely not to be missed in Abu Dhabi!

Qasr Al Watan - one of the main landmarks in Abu Dhabi UAE

Our tour guide gave us a short introduction to the Palace and explained where to find the ‘must sees’. After that, we had about more than an hour to explore the palace and its grounds on our own.

This is something I really liked about this tour – we got just plenty of information, but also plenty of free time at each of the landmarks visited.

Good to know: While it is a working palace, it’s mostly used for ceremonial functions and big political gatherings. So the palace is open to the public, except if there is some special political event or a visit by another head of state.

You will have to go through airport-style security here, but you can simply leave all your belongings on the tour bus and just take your camera with you.

Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace of UAE - Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai

Etihad Towers

The next stop on our itinerary was the Observation Deck at the Etihad Towers . There are five skyscrapers here, of varying height. We were told that the five towers represent unity, like the five fingers of a hand. I also read somewhere that they refer to several important Arabic symbols, such as falconry and swords.

In addition to their unique architecture and symbolism, Etihad Towers offer stunning 360° views of the city and the Arabian Gulf from the Observation Deck at 300 meters . It’s located on the 74th floor of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers Hotel .

The views from here are spectacular and – in my opinion – more impressive than from most of the viewpoints in Dubai, including the views from Burj Khalifa.

Right below, you can see the entire Presidential Palace complex as well as the Emirates Palace and several other luxury hotels, including Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi which looks like a copy of the famous Atlantis The Palm in Dubai . The seashore and Corniche make the views even more special.

Good to know: Etihad Towers Observation Deck is supposedly just a short stop of about half an hour, out of which you have about 15 minutes to enjoy the views at the top (which sounds little but is actually plenty). However, depending on the queue at the elevators, it might take longer.

View from Etihad Towers Observation Deck - Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

After the visit to Etihad Towers, we drove to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. There is an underground mall here – Souq Al Jami – where you can find a big food court with a wide variety of restaurants.

Before we headed for lunch, our guide quickly checked if everyone was dressed ‘acceptably’ for the Mosque visit and went to get some Abaya (long black dress) and scarves for women.

If you wear long pants/skirt, a blouse that covers your arms completely, and have a scarf to cover your hair, you don’t need this dress. But if your clothes are just not long enough or see-through (even a bit), they recommend wearing the Abaya. So I opted for that, just to be safe.

If you choose the tour that includes lunch , you will have a traditional lunch at the Michelin-star Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. Otherwise, you can decide where you want to eat when you get there. You will find all the famous fast-food chains here as well as Italian and Mexican restaurants, etc. However, it’s your chance to try some really good Arabian food so we recommend that you go to Al Khayma.

We had lunch at this restaurant, following our guide’s recommendation and everything was delicious.

I read in some reviews that people felt lunch was a bit rushed, but we had about 1h15 which was plenty. I even found the time to quietly put on the Abaya before meeting the guide at the agreed time and place.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi and a must-see! It’s the finest example of Islamic architecture and is absolutely breathtaking, both outside as well as inside.

As a non-Muslim, you can only visit part of the Mosque, but no worries – you can see the most impressive parts. You are also allowed to view the main worship hall which is nothing short of remarkable.

Here, you can see the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, ornate decorations, and several impressive Swarovski chandeliers. It’s also incredibly spacious and can accommodate about 40,000 people inside!

If you are a Muslim, you can also go to pray inside, but during the week, the main hall seemed to be empty. The main prayer hall is closed to visitors between noon and 3 pm on Fridays, so tours try to visit before or after that.

Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai - Sheikh Zayed Mosque

As mentioned earlier, the Grand Mosque is one place that is included in all tour itineraries and is visited by pretty much every tourist who sets foot in Abu Dhabi, even if just for a few hours. This means that the Mosque is always extremely busy. Tickets have to be reserved in advance, for a specific time slot, etc.

Because of really bad traffic in Dubai on the day of our visit (it rained the day before which only happens a few times a year and leaves the area in chaos :)), we were way too late for the time slot booked. No worries, though. Everything was rearranged by the tour company while we were having lunch.

We entered without any wait at all and our guide made sure that we had plenty of time inside the Mosque (about 15-20 minutes with a guide and more than an hour on our own).

I liked that they didn’t rush us or cut the tour short and gave us the full experience. This meant that we were back in Dubai later than planned but that was no big deal since it was a full-day trip anyway.

Good to know: Also here, you will have to go through airport-style security. As mentioned before, there is a dress code as well. In general, they recommend long, loose ankle-length trousers or skirts. As a minimum, for men, shoulders and knees have to be covered. For women, the rules are stricter and you have to cover up everything except your face, hands, and feet (which means that sandals are ok).

Our tour provided Abaya dresses and scarves for women, which just made things simpler.

Dubai tour to Abu Dhabi - Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Drive back to Dubai

After our visit to the Mosque, the shuttle brought us back to Dubai. There was plenty of time to rest (or even sleep) on the bus.

Just as in the morning, the bus dropped us off at a place where they had private drivers waiting to take everyone back to their hotels. This way, nobody had to wait longer than necessary. The tour was really well organized and I couldn’t fault anything.

The only issues we had that day were related to exceptionally hard rain that left the roads blank and resulted in really bad traffic. Knowing that it only rains a few days per year in the UAE, the risk of you encountering the same is pretty low. Still, as mentioned before, I wouldn’t make any other plans for the evening – that will make your tour more relaxed.

Abu Dhabi Tour with Kids

If you are travelling with children and wonder if you can do a day tour to Abu Dhabi with kids, my answer is yes, of course. Most tours allow children of any age.

However, which tour to choose also depends on your family situation, how many kids you have, how old they are, etc. In addition, consider how well your children can handle a long bus ride, explore the landmarks, and – not to underestimate – practicalities such as the heat or not being able to use the bathroom or eat whenever they fancy.

That being said, if you can keep the kids busy in the car for 1.5- 2 hours and they can behave at the Mosque or the Presidential Palace, I see no reason why you couldn’t take them.

We did this Abu Dhabi tour with teens and – while they were the only kids in our group – we had no issues whatsoever. They were also truly fascinated by the incredible architecture we saw and truly enjoyed the day (having their phones for the long ride definitely helped though).

When I asked them about their top experiences on this trip, the Abu Dhabi day trip was in their top 3, together with a camel ride in the Dubai desert and a boat ride on the Burj Lake . They also really enjoyed Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark but ‘ranked’ the Abu Dhabi day trip as a more special experience.

TIP: If you want to take a day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi with children, consider booking a private tour. As already mentioned, pretty much all the tours we listed in this article can also be booked as private tours. It will be much more relaxing and you will spend less time in the car since they will pick you up from the hotel and drive directly to Abu Dhabi rather than gathering the whole group in a bus.

Alternatively, look into tours that visit the Mosque and maybe Ferrari World or one of the other theme parks on Yas Island (e.g. this tour ). That way, your tour has something for everyone in the family. That said, with very young kids, consider height restrictions for rollercoasters and similar.

Practical Info & Tips for Abu Dhabi Tours

Here is some additional information you may want to know when considering a tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi:

  • Most Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai include a pick-up/drop-off at your hotel . Keep in mind that the pick-up time can be up to an hour earlier than the official tour starting time (the same as the drop-off).
  • Pretty much all tours in the UAE include drinking water (on our tour, there was a large cool box full of water on the bus).
  • Keep in mind that entry to Sheikh Zayed Mosque might be restricted at certain times of the day during Islamic holidays and also on Fridays. Qasr Al Watan might also be closed if there are any political meetings at the palace. That’s another advantage of going with a tour – they know the schedules and adjust the visit. Still, you can never exclude a tiny chance of some last-minute changes when visiting places like that.
  • Some Abu Dhabi tours also include Abaya dresses for women at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, but that’s not always the case. So be sure to double-check that in the tour description if you need one.
  • There is no strict dress code at other places in Abu Dhabi, only at the Mosque. However, if you are visiting the Presidential Palace, they also recommend loose long pants or a skirt and a modest blouse/shirt that covers your shoulders.
  • Take some sunscreen lotion and sunglasses with you. A sun hat can be a good idea as well.
  • Pack only what you need – it will be easier to go through security checks everywhere. Furthermore, you can safely leave other belongings (food, sunscreen lotion, etc.) on the tour bus.
  • There are free bathroom facilities at all the sights we visited on this tour, but not on a bus. They also don’t stop anywhere along the way.
  • You get about 60-75 minutes for lunch on this tour, but depending on the traffic, it can be quite late in the day. So if you need some more energy during the day, pack some small snacks with you.

PRO TIP: There’s one thing we noticed when booking our tour to Abu-Dhabi is that on some days, prices were much higher than on others (this could be related to school holidays, public holidays, and similar). So if you are somewhat flexible, check a few different dates when booking the tour – sometimes, travelling a day earlier or later might save you quite some money.

Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Championship held for first time in Rome

R OME, 14th April, 2024 (WAM) -- In the presence of Abdulla Ali Al Saboosi, UAE Ambassador to Italy, the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Professional (AJP), affiliated with the International Vision Sports Management (IVSM), launched for the first time the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour in the Italian capital of Rome.

The competition began on Friday, 12th April, and continued until Sunday,14th April, at the Centro Olimpico Matteo Pellicone. With over a thousand men and women from 60 countries registered to compete in the Youth, Amateur, Professional, and Master categories, the tournament had a great demand from European and international athletes, with the matches receiving some of the most prominent players from the main teams in the sport from day one.

Academies around the globe had their best members fighting for the top prize, which is of great importance to them as it gives the athletes who reach first place in each category two thousand points in the annual ranking approved within the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Professional.

Rodrigo Valerio, Director of Operations at the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Professional, said, “Over the past 10 years, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Championship has succeeded in presenting itself as the largest destination for Jiu-Jitsu players from around the world, and the large turnout witnessed by each round of the tournament is strong evidence of its importance and great value.”

Apart from the elite champions and world-renowned competitors, the Rome Tour was launched for many reasons, not the least of them the fact that the city is located in a strategic position in Europe and that it is considered a distinctive and high-level destination for sports tourism during this time of the year. We can say that we will witness more success in the upcoming tours, the most important of which is the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu World Tour, with which we’ll conclude the season next May.

One of the champions of the tournament, the Brazilian black belt Thiago Barreto (from the Emirati academy “Commando Group) won the gold medal in the Masters category under 69kg. Regarding his participation, Thiago said, “I am looking forward to earning the highest amount of points in all rounds of the championship, especially since it is an opportunity for us as players to compete and interact with the strongest names and stars in the world of Jiu-Jitsu. I would like to thank the UAE and the tournament organizers for facilitating registration procedures and providing the best competitive environment in all tournaments.”

Brazilian Ariadne de Olivera (brown/black belt) from Al Ain Club, who won gold in the women’s Master category under 55 kg, said, “We are happy to be in this wonderful tournament in Italy. I started preparing for it two weeks ago and I was completely ready to be successful in this major international event.”

Among the Professional black belt athletes who registered to participate in the tournament, the highlights were Yuri Hendrex, Leonardo Mario, and Jefferson Fagundes from the PSLPB Cicero Costha Academy, as well as Lucas Protasio from Checkmat, and Uanderson Ferreira from the Commando Group. On the Women’s side, the standouts were Fratres’ Yara Nascimento, GFTeam’s Julia Alves, and DreamArt’s Ingridd Sousa and Ana Rodrigues.

SeaWorld to Louvre Abu Dhabi, indoor things to do when it rains in the UAE capital

Trampoline parks are perfect for adrenaline seekers, while spas and wellness centres are great for relaxation.

Despite the UAE's reputation as a sun haven, it does rain from time to time. Experts predict the frequency of rain in the country will rise by 30 per cent this century, and 2024 has already had its fair share.

So it's always good to know where to go and what to do in Abu Dhabi when the beach is off the cards. Here are some activities to consider when the sun is hiding.

Visit indoor theme parks, from SeaWorld to Ferrari World

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi is the newest theme park to open on Yas Island. The attraction spans 183,000 square metres and occupies five floors. There are more than 100,000 animals and more than 15 rides and experiences on offer in the park’s eight sections.

Other theme parks that are fully or partially indoors are Ferrari World and Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi , which has rides for all ages, and characters from franchises such as DC and Looney Tunes.

In Reem Mall, meanwhile, you can swap the rain for snow at Snow Abu Dhabi, where you can keep cool while enjoying rides, visiting themed attractions and tucking into food at one of three dining outlets.

Get active indoors, from Bounce Abu Dhabi to Clymb

If your little ones have energy to burn, then some of the more active indoor attractions around the capital may do the trick.

Families with children and teenagers can check out KidZania in Yas Mall, with over 40 role-playing activities for little ones aged four to 16. While you're in the area, you can check out Clymb , also inside Yas Mall next to Ferrari World. It is billed to have the world's tallest indoor skydiving flight chamber.

In Marina Mall, Bounce Abu Dhabi offers an action-packed experience with more than a hundred trampolines.

Visit local museums, from Louvre Abu Dhabi to Etihad Modern Art Gallery

Another way to escape the wet weather is to plan a visit to one of the capital's various museums.

Louvre Abu Dhabi has some of the world's most valuable artworks on display. Since opening in 2017, the museum on Saadiyat Island has acquired a number of valuable items for permanent collection, including two Pablo Picasso paintings, Woman Holding a Mandoline (1911) and Portrait of a Seated Woman (1923), as well as Rococo French painter Jean-Honore Fragonard’s work Les Marionnettes (1770).

The Ancient Maltese pillars have also been recently added to its collection. The ornamental pillars, which were separated for 240 years, were reunited at Louvre Abu Dhabi on the 50th anniversary of the UAE’s diplomatic relationship with Malta.

Guests can also check out seasonal exhibitions, including the latest called From Kalila wa Dimna to La Fontaine: Travelling through Fables , a deep dive into the history of fables with more than 130 artworks including centuries-old manuscripts and contemporary pieces. Louvre Abu Dhabi also has a children’s museum and restaurant on site.

Other museums to check out include Etihad Modern Art Gallery, which showcases the work of well-established and up-and-coming Emirati and international artists; and The Art Gallery at NYUAD, which has curated exhibitions across historical and contemporary topics.

Plan a car-themed day out at Emirates National Auto Museum

Motorheads can take a trip to the Emirates National Auto Museum in Al Dhafra, which displays a vast collection of vintage and modified cars as well as military vehicles. Residents from downtown Abu Dhabi would have to drive 45 minutes to the pyramid-shaped venue, where over 200 cars owned by Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan are exhibited. The car museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm.

Tackle an escape room, from Boxed In – Think In, to Black Out

Children can stay engaged and entertained at escape rooms, with numerous options around the capital.

Boxed In – Think In at Abu Dhabi Mall, for example, has more than 80 challenges and puzzles contained within 12 boxes for curious minds to solve. Tasks will require concentration, problem-solving skills and logical thinking. There is room for 10 teams of two to five people.

For those who prefer a bit of horror, try Black Out near Al Wahda Mall, which has five rooms and eerie challenges that range from 40 minutes to 60 minutes.

Head to a VR Gaming centre such as Zero Latency

If you're keen on gaming experiences, check out Pixoul Gaming at Al Qana, which is home to several virtual reality games, classic arcade machines and other exciting e-sport activities. Also offering VR fun is Zero Latency at The Galleria Mall, which is ideal for big groups who want to enter free-roam multiplayer worlds for a bit of an escape from reality.

Visit the National Aquarium in Al Qana

Also located in Al Qana, the National Aquarium is home to 46,000 marine creatures and 300 species spread across 10 zones, making it the largest aquarium in the Middle East. In addition to the animals, the attraction also offers several interactive experiences including scuba diving, animal feedings and glass-bottom dhow tours.

De-stress in a spa or wellness centre

A gloomy day can be transformed into a relaxing break, with plenty of spa and wellness hubs across the city.

It's worth checking out the wide variety of amenities at The Bridge at Al Qana . The lifestyle hub combines a gym, spa, restaurant, juice bar and other wellness-related concepts in one building. There are 250 exercise stations on site, as well as a semi-Olympic indoor running track. Relaxation spaces are also on offer, with science-backed facilities for cryo treatment, infrared saunas and more.

Many hotels have facilities open for non-guests too, such as the Upbeat Health Club at Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi, the Namm Spa at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi and The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Emirates Palace , which blends ancient Eastern healing techniques with contemporary spa services.

Create the fun at home

When weather is extreme, it's often advised not to leave the house unless essential. In which case, you may need to find ways to keep little ones entertained at home. There are plenty of ways to improvise some at-home fun , such as hosting an indoor treasure hunt or creating a makeshift laser maze out of strings or crepe paper.

Board games are another fun option as well as picking up new skills such as knitting or cake decorating, with loads of videos available on TikTok and YouTube. If you don't mind some extended screen time, organise a movie marathon, throwing in classics or new titles, made easier by streaming services such as Netflix and OSN, for more regional programming.

But while investments in esports have been cooling off in many places around the globe, plans for the industry-defining megaproject are heating up in the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.

News of the esports island emerged as True Gamers, an operator of a global network of gaming lounges and clubs, announced intentions for a $280 million investment in what is projected to be a $1 billion development. The island would include a digital technology and innovation workspace in one tower, a resort hotel in another tower, a complex of training and meeting spaces, and an arena designed for hosting multi-format events and exhibitions. Even in concept, the project advances Abu Dhabi among regional destinations that are rapidly growing as global centers for sports and sports-led development.

The location being eyed for the esports island is in the centrally-located Al Raha district of residential, retail, commercial, and recreational properties nearby the city’s Zayed International Airport. It sits across a waterway from the sports- and leisure-focused Yas Island .

Yas is renowned for hosting prestigious sports events like the Formula 1 season finale, UFC mixed martial arts cards, NBA exhibition games, and DP World Tour golf tournaments. It welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors to its Ferrari World, Waterworld, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld theme parks. Luxury hotels, shopping malls, golf courses, restaurants, and nightlife venues lend to an entertaining year-round atmosphere. For most of the time since opening in 2009, Yas has also presented a range of health and fitness sessions for the public, including making the entire F1 track available twice weekly for walking, running, or bicycling by people of all ages, abilities, and interests.

While Yas may stand out as a prominent destination for sports-related amenities among Abu Dhabi's array of 200 islands, it is not alone. Another is Huydayriat Island , a 3000-hectare (approximately 7500-acre) fitness- and nature-focused island that includes a surf park, cycling tracks, a velodrome, football pitches, basketball and tennis courts, running and walking trails, skate parks, an obstacle course, watersports, and sixteen kilometers (about ten miles) of beaches. Saadiyat Island has cultural, heritage, educational, residential, recreational, hospitality, and tourism offerings, including kayaking routes that wind around and into the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum.

Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi chairman Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak recently shared that the emirate’s tourism strategy considers more than $10 billion in state-sponsored and public-private partnership infrastructure investments between now and the end of the decade . The results of those projects figure to add $24.5 billion to the nation's annual gross domestic product. An island that caters to esports and gaming would fit in among those plans and the range of nature preserves, cultural sites, leisure spots, tourist attractions, and commercial centers across the emirate’s existing islands.

But an esports investment wouldn’t come into being for purposes of economic opportunism or public relations gains. It would be because it aligns with the objectives and goals of Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 , the roadmap set forth by the government in 2006 to ensure a sustainable economy.

During the past two decades, governments of cities and nations across the Gulf region have been making massive investments into transforming their economies from a reliance on oil-based operations to an interest in knowledge-based organizations. The strategy aims to enable self-sustaining industries in anticipation of the day in the middle of this century when the bulk of oil reserves are figured to run dry.

The model that the UAE is following to achieve that is “unique and novel,” says Robert Salomon, dean of the NYU Stern School of Business at NYU Abu Dhabi and a professor of management at NYU Stern. “The traditional model in the developing world has been export-led growth. For Abu Dhabi, it’s ‘let's just jump from an oil-based, developing economy and go straight toward services and a knowledge-based economy.’”

The trillions of dollars of investment being committed to these changes are not being driven primarily by economic development, though. They are being powered more so by social impact.

The Abu Dhabi economy is fashioned around a society designed for living, working, and connecting. In terms of approach, it bucks the classical model that puts economics over society. In terms of culture and worldview, it places a premium on improving social pursuits as a means to stirring economic opportunities. Sports and sports-led development are part of that ambition.

“One of the features that defines a developed country is leisure time. And one of the things that people do when they have leisure time is they dedicate more time to sport,” Salomon says. “Sport is one of the markers of a society that has developed.”

From Salomon’s perspective, Abu Dhabi’s local and global investments in sports, the arts, entertainment, film, and creative services are indicators that the emirate has arrived at an inflection point in its evolution. That opens its leadership and people into a new round of thinking-through the questions about what developed countries do and what developed countries can do. “A project like the esports island is consistent with that happening,” he says.

As the esports island emerges on the horizon, Abu Dhabi has a well-established track record of hosting esports events. For example, it recently welcomed back the Blast Premier World Final, an international tournament with a $1 million prize pool, for the second time. Events like that highlight the region’s growing presence in the esports industry.

Esports-related revenue in the region had an annual increase of nearly eight percent to almost $2 billion last year and is on pace to continue rising through the end of the decade, according to a report by Niko Partners . Saudi Arabia generated more than half of the revenue, followed by the UAE with almost one-third of it. This surge in esports, alongside Abu Dhabi's increasing focus on gaming and digital entertainment, is evident decisions such as the integration of Abu Dhabi Gaming—a government-led initiative that aggregates the local gaming ecosystem around talent development, game development, digital education, and esports—into the portfolio of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi late last year.

From ancient times through the middle of the past century, the Abu Dhabi economy was fueled by fishing and pearl diving. Then came oil and trade. Now and in the foreseeable future, it is knowledge and culture. With plans for projects like the world’s first esports island on the rise, Abu Dhabi is primed to further its status as a global sports hub.

Howie feeling at home ahead of Abu Dhabi Challenge

Craig Howie is hoping to use course knowledge to his advantage this week as he prepares to tee it up in the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, the first of back-to-back Challenge Tour events in the UAE.

42 - Craig Howie

This week’s venue represents a golden opportunity for the Scotsman, who is an ambassador for Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club and has been a regular at the course for over a decade.

His association began during winter training camps with the University of Stirling, where Howie found the tranquillity of the course a particular positive.

“ It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities like Dubai,” he said. “Al Ain is a little bit quieter, so it’s a perfect place to come and work away from distractions.

“The course is always in great condition, and the team do a great job of keeping it like that. The practice area is as good as you’ll get anywhere else.”

Howie has made a solid start to his season – making the cut in all six events so far – and currently lies 36th in the Road to Mallorca Rankings. The 29-year-old will be looking to take advantage of familiar surroundings this week, but insists he isn’t putting undue pressure on himself.

“I’ve been pretty consistent this year, but I’ve not really had a big finishes, so I’m looking to improve on that this week ,” he said. “ I haven’t got super high expectations, but it’s obviously a course I know well, which could be a difference maker.”

The Championship Course at Al Ain has recently lengthened a number of holes, a change which Howie suggested has made the course “ a lot more competitive”. The Scotsman doubled down on the added yardage, singling out length off the tee as one of the keys to victory this week.

“ With the extra length , there are fewer wedges, more proper iron shots and some really demanding tee shots," he added.

“You hit a lot of drivers, but the hitting areas aren’t the tightest, so length will be an advantage. The greens here are usually quite firm, so length will also help with having shorter clubs in.”

Howie joins a very strong field for the Abu Dhabi Challenge, where he will tee it up alongside several winners on the DP World Tour and a Ryder Cup winner in Nicolas Colsaerts.

The back-to-back Challenge Tour events in the UAE, which are also supported by Arena, Phoenix Capital and Al Laith, are part of the European Tour group’s long-term partnership with the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF), which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade.

Thirty spots in each upcoming tournament will be allocated to the EGF to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for UAE golfers. Emirati golfers including Joshua Grenville-Wood and Ahmed Al Musharrekh, will tee it up in Al Ain this week.

Play will get under way at 6:30 local time on Thursday, with Howie teeing it up alongside Al Musharrekh and Swede Mikael Lindberg.
