To change Safari's default search engine, launch the Safari app on your Mac and click on "Safari" in the top-left corner of the screen and select "Preferences" from the list that appears:

macOS Safari Preferences

A new window will appear. Click on the "Search" button to switch to the search engine preferences:

Reveal Safari search engine preferences

Click on the drop-down arrow to select a search engine of your choice. You'll be able to choose from Google, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Bing , and Ecosia :

Safari available search engines

Once you've chosen your desired search engine you can close the preferences panel. From now on, all searches you conduct from the address bar will use the search engine specified in Safari's preferences.

There's currently no way of adding more search engines to Safari, which means if you want to use another search provider by default, you'll need to use an alternative browser like Chrome or Firefox.

Fortunately, you can use one clever workaround to search the web with different search engines directly from the Safari URL bar. To do this you'll need to use DuckDuckGo as your default search engine, so follow the steps above to change to this default search engine in Safari's preferences.

DuckDuckGo supports a range of additional operators called "bangs" which are primarily designed to limit your search to a particular website . For example, if you search "change Safari search engine !htg" in DuckDuckGo, you'll trigger the How-To Geek bang (!htg) which will search this website specifically, using our choice of search provider (which happens to be Google).

You can do this for a range of services like YouTube (!yt), Wikipedia (!w), and Twitter (!twitter). You can also use it to search Google (!g), Google Images (!gimg), and Gmail (!gmail) without having to rely on Google as your primary search engine. Remember that you don't get DuckDuckGo's enhanced privacy when using these bangs since the search engine merely hands your request to a third-party search instead.

Bangs include other search providers like Bing (!bing) and Ecosia (!eco). Head to the DuckDuckGo Bangs Repository  and search for your desired search engine, then add the bang to each search.

Not only is DuckDuckGo the best default Safari search engine from a privacy perspective, but you can also always switch to Google and get more in-depth results by adding a "!g" bang to your search. Searching with DuckDuckGo soon becomes second nature, especially when you've remembered which bangs to use for your favorite websites and search engines.

You can also use DuckDuckGo for media, maps, news, and directions .

How to change Safari's default search engine

Safari search bar iPhone X

As you know, Safari was created by Apple and comes bundled into iOS and macOS, making it the go-to option for many Apple fans. If that sounds like you, you may find it useful to be able to customize your browsing experience by changing the default search engine used by Safari.

When you type a URL or search term in Safari's address bar, the browser uses a search engine to return your results. In this case, Google is the factory default, but it's super simple to switch things up to use your search engine of choice. This guide will walk you through a handful of quick steps to show you how to change Safari's default search engine on your iPhone or Mac.

How to change Safari's default search engine on iOS

How to change safari's default search engine on macos.

  • Locate and launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Once in Settings, scroll down until you see the Safari icon.
  • Tap Safari .
  • Here, you'll find multiple ways to customize your web browsing experience, but right now you're looking for Search Engine , which is located under the SEARCH heading.
  • Tap Search Engine .
  • Finally, choose your preferred search engine.
  • Open Safari on your Mac.
  • Click the Safari drop down menu from the main menu bar at the top of the screen.
  • Select Preferences , or use the "⌘," keyboard shortcut.
  • Select the Search tab from the Preferences popup.
  • Click the drop down menu next to Search Engine .

Safari currently allows you to pick one of four major search engines — Google, Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo. Once you've made your selection, the changes will be applied and you'll immediately be able to see the search results from the new default engine. Keep in mind, you can change your default at any time using the above steps.

It's also worth noting that, just because you've set a default search engine doesn't mean you can't still use the others. All you have to do is type the URL (google.com, yahoo.com, bing.com, etc.) in Safari and you can use any one you wish, whenever you want.

It's super easy to change your default search engine in Safari. If you have any questions, make sure to drop a line below!

Microsoft Begged Apple to Adopt Bing as Safari's Default Search Engine

Microsoft repeatedly attempted to persuade Apple to switch to Bing as the default search engine for Safari or even buy it outright, it has emerged.

microsoft bing chatgpt

Apple consistently declined these offers, citing concerns over Bing's search quality relative to Google's. The documents reveal that in 2018 Microsoft not only suggested making Bing the default search engine but also offered to sell Bing to Apple or establish a joint venture around the search engine. These proposals were similarly turned down by Apple.

The court filings provide insight into Apple's decision-making process, highlighting the company's evaluation of Bing's capabilities against Google's. Eddy Cue , Apple's Senior Vice President of Services, is quoted in the filings expressing skepticism about Bing's search quality and Microsoft's investment in search technology.

Google pays billions of dollars to remain the default search engine on Apple devices. Google argues that Microsoft's repeated pitches to Apple demonstrate the competitive nature of the search engine market, countering allegations that Google holds a monopoly in web search advertising.

Is Safari a search engine?

No, Safari is not a search engine but a web browser . It can be used to access search engines, but it is not a search engine itself. You can also use Safari to access websites that are not search engines. For example, you can use it to visit your favorite social media sites, news websites, or online shopping stores.

But why Safari looks like a search engine? Safari sometimes sets its homepage to a search engine's website or has a search bar prominently displayed on its interface. Despite the similarities, Safari is ultimately a web browser.

What is Safari?

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple. It is built into Apple's operating systems, including macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, and is the default web browser for Apple products. Safari was introduced in Mac OS X Panther in 2003. The Windows version lasted between 2007 and 2012 and was discontinued.

To understand why Safari is not a search engine but a web browser, you should understand the difference between a search engine and a web browser.

What is a web browser?

A web browser is a software application on your device for accessing websites on the World Wide Web. After you type in the address of a webpage into the browser's address bar and press Return, you are requesting the website's server to obtain the content of that webpage. The web browser will send your request to the website's server and then the server will send back and render the website's files, which the browser then displays on your screen.

This tool helps you view and interact with the web. Without web browsers, you cannot conduct any activities online that require a website address located on a web server. Some of the most popular web browsers are Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

This article will guide you to know these two browsers from different perspectives so that you can change the default web browser to the preferred one.

What is a search engine?

What is a search engine

A search engine is a website or a software system that helps users to find information on the World Wide Web. It sends out software bots, also known as spiders or crawlers, to constantly visit the entire web and collect information on each webpage, and then index the data to its database. When you enter a specific search request on a search engine, the search engine will systematically present you with a line of results, a mix of hyperlinks to web pages, images, videos, articles, and other types of files, to match your query.

This tool helps you quickly search the World Wide Web for particular information. Without search engines, it will be very difficult to find information and navigate through the internet. Some of the most popular search engines are Google, Bing, Yahoo!, and DuckDuckGo.

What Is Safari?

Hint: Apple device users use this all the time

safari a search engine

  • University of Texas at Arlington

Safari web browser is the default for the iPhone , iPad, and macOS , first released by Apple in 2003 and briefly offered on Windows from 2007 to 2012. The popularity of the Safari browser exploded with the iPhone and the iPad, and currently has about a  54% market share of mobile browser usage  in the United States.

In most ways, Safari is like any other popular browser. Users can browse websites, bookmark favorites, and open multiple sites in tabs. Built using the WebKit engine, Safari was one of the first web browsers to support the new  HTML 5  standard. It was also one of the first browsers to have support for Adobe Flash turned off by default, with the mobile versions of Safari having never supported Flash .

Safari on Mac OS is currently on version 11.1, which includes an upgrade to Intelligent Tracking Prevention. This feature helps prevent a specific website from tracking pages browsed on other websites, a process called 'cross-site tracking. Safari on iOS shares its version with the iOS version, which is currently on 12.1.

What Makes Safari Stand out From Other Web Browsers?

While you might have trouble spotting the differences between Google Chrome, Apple's Safari, or Microsoft Edge at first glance, the Safari browser has some key features that help separate it from the pack, including the ability to format articles for easier reading.

  • iCloud Tab Browsing . This feature automatically syncs open tabs across devices with the same  iCloud  account. You can view a list of all tabs open on your MacBook while using Safari on the iPhone or iPad. It's similar to Chrome's bookmark sharing but doesn't require logging in.
  • Sharing . The Safari app has a built-in share button that enables users to quickly share a website through messaging, email, or social media such as Facebook or Twitter. The coolest feature is the ability to share a site directly with another nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac using AirDrop.
  • Reader View . Safari can detect articles and present them in a format that strips out navigation and advertisement in favor of a more readable view. This view is especially great for websites that load new windows as you scroll or become unreadable on an iPhone or iPad because of navigation.
  • Energy Efficient . While iMacs are great desktop computers, Apple is primarily a laptop and mobile device provider. Safari proves this by being extremely energy efficient, buying you precious minutes, and sometimes even hours of extra use compared to Chrome, Firefox, and other popular browsers.

What Are Safari's Deficits?

The Safari web browser has a lot going for it, especially for those who are rooted in the Apple ecosystem and own a Mac along with an iPhone or iPad. However, it's not all roses and butterflies:

  • Limited Plugin Support.  Safari supports Extension, but the plugins available for Safari lag behind those available for Chrome.
  • Exclusive to Apple . While it's possible to run Safari on Linux and it was briefly supported on Windows, Safari is primarily a web browser made to run on Apple hardware. You can't run it on Android smartphones or tablets, and you should avoid the Windows version because Apple no longer supports it with critical security updates.
  • No Tab Icons . Favicons are essentially icons for websites. And while browsers like Google Chrome use these icons in tabs to help differentiate browser tabs and help the user pick out the one they want, Safari doesn't include them on tabs.

Safari Alternatives

While Safari is the default browser for iOS and Mac, users can download a wide range of browsers on either platform. The Mac supports Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, and many other web browsers, while iPhone and iPad users can download Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and even Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft almost sold Bing to Apple, here’s why it didn’t happen

L ast September, there were reports that Microsoft tried to sell its Bing search engine to Apple at one point. The talks between the tech giants reached an exploratory stage in 2020 but didn’t get more advanced due to Bing’s quality issues. Now, a court document related to Google’s antitrust trial with the DOJ, which was unsealed on Friday, suggests a similar claim.

Microsoft pitched Apple the idea of making Bing the default search engine on Safari many times

The unsealed document has revealed that Microsoft pitched Apple the idea of making Bing the default search engine on Safari many times. The Redmond-based tech giant tried it as many as six times in 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2020. The company even tried to sell Bing to Apple in 2018, apart from offering to establish a Bing-related joint venture. However, every time, Apple declined citing the quality and features of Bing over Google Search, reports CNBC.

In the document, Google mentioned that “In each instance, Apple took a hard look at the relative quality of Bing versus Google and concluded that Google was the superior default choice for its Safari users. That is competition”. The search titan claims that Apple rejected Microsoft’s offer citing the under-par search quality of Bing. The CNBC report also quotes Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, mentioning that Microsoft wasn’t investing enough in search quality and investment.

“Microsoft search quality, their investment in search, everything was not significant at all,” said Eddy Cue, as per the filing. “And so everything was lower. So the search quality itself wasn’t as good. They weren’t investing at any level comparable to Google or to what Microsoft could invest in. And their advertising organization and how they monetize was not very good either.”

Apple is making billions by keeping Google as its default search engine

For the uninitiated, Apple is making billions of dollars by keeping Google as its default search engine. Well, there’s no concrete number, but reports suggest that Google pays nearly upwards of $20 billion yearly to Apple for their deal. Notably, during the antitrust trial, Eddy Cue (Apple’s SVP of Services) testified that if Apple hadn’t received such massive payments from Google, it would have developed its own search engine.

Many industry analysts suggest that the Cupertino tech giant will eventually launch its own search engine. Over the years, many reports have been suggesting that as well. However, given the amount of money the company is already making from Google, we don’t think it will happen any time soon.

Currently, Google is the king of search with a market share of nearly 92 percent as of January 2024, as per StatCounter. As for Bing, it reportedly caters to just around 4 percent of searches across the globe. It’s worth pointing out that StatCounter reports that Bing’s user base is growing gradually. In January 2023, it claimed a market share of 3.03 percent, which has risen to 3.43 percent in January 2024

Apple rejected Bing for wrong answers about Annie Lennox

After searching for Lennonx's first band, Bing only provided results for The Eurythmics, which was incorrect

It has been revealed that Apple rejected Bing as the default search engine in its Safari browser after providing the wrong answer to a question about Annie Lennox .

Incorrect search results for the query “Annie Lennox first band” was among the reasons why Apple ended up going with Google as their default search engine. The claims were revealed on Friday, February 23 in a  filing from Google in its antitrust case against the US government (per The Register ).

Lennox was referenced in testimony from John Giannandrea, Apple’s vice president of machine learning and AI strategy.

Back in 2018, Giannandrea used Bing to research the singer’s career after Apple was approached by Microsoft in hopes to be choses ad the default search engine over Google. After searching for Lennonx’s first band, Bing only provided results for The Eurythmics .

Though Lennonx is best known for her time in The Eurythmics, her first band was The Tourist. In 1979 theu band covered Dusty Springfield’s ‘I Only Want To Be With You’ which reached the Number Four spot on the UK Singles chart.

Giannandrea was not impressed by the search engine. Other issues he found with Bing was it’s lack of local language coverage in markets Apple cared about and the lack of progress updating and improving the search engine which was previously discussed between the tech giants during 2015 and 2016.

Apple’s vice president of machine learning and AI strategy felt like Microsoft acknowledged Bing’s shortcomings, sharing that they “gave us a detailed presentation of what they were not doing, presumably to motivate us to say, ‘Hey if we invested in this together, we could do these things” (per

In the filing, Giannandrea’s testimony also states: “Microsoft was willing to sell Bing, which you wouldn’t do if it was a strategic asset.”

The filing is part of Google’s defense in the antitrust case that alleges it flouted competition laws to build its dominance of the US search market.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

safari a search engine

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on-device intelligence to help prevent cross-site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your usernames, passkeys, passwords and credit card numbers, and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favourite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimisations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.
