Writing in the planner is a woman's hand in a white sweater. Photo with selective focus, bokeh lights, and atmospheric effects. Gifts and shopping concept for Christmas

Here are some of the expert-approved tips for planning and booking a Christmas market cruise :

  • You should take some time to research different Christmas market cruises before you book one. This will help you to find the right cruise within your budget.
  • While most stalls at Christmas markets accept credit and debit cards, it is still a good idea to bring some cash with you.
  • Do not wait to buy something you like at a Christmas market. If you see something you like, you should buy it right away to avoid disappointment, as these things sell out very quickly.
  • Make sure not to spend all of your money at the first Christmas market you visit. There will be other Christmas markets to visit throughout your trip. So, you should save some of your money for spending at these markets.
  • Christmas markets are usually only open for a few hours each day. This is because the vendors need time to set up and tear down their stalls. You should plan your day carefully so that you have enough time to visit all of the Christmas markets present on your wish list.

Experiencing the Magic: Onboard and Ashore

Other than the Christmas Market visits, the Christmas Market Cruises offer a lot of onboard activities to all its guests. Here are some of the activities you must participate in while onboard your cruise ship:

  • Gather around the Christmas tree with your loved ones and decorate it with accessories, lights, and garlands.
  • Enjoy a delicious and festive Christmas dinner with your fellow passengers. The meal may include traditional Christmas dishes, such as roast turkey, ham, and mashed potatoes, as well as desserts like Christmas pudding and mince pies.
  • Sing traditional Christmas carols to celebrate the holiday season and get into the festive spirit.
  • Test your knowledge of Christmas trivia with a fun and festive quiz.
  • Drinking glühwein or German mulled wine made with red wine, sugar, and spices, and is often served with a slice of orange or lemon.
  • Get into the holiday spirit by baking cakes, cookies, and gingerbread houses.

Christmas Markets in 2023 – Better Than Ever!

We just returned from a four-night visit to Germany to visit the Christmas markets! They are popular and the energy level is high! Here is some firsthand feedback from our recent weekend visit.

The European Christmas Markets are always a popular holiday cruise itinerary leading up to Christmas in Europe.

In many of the charming towns and villages in Germany and Austria, Advent is ushered in with the opening of the Christmas markets. Medieval in appearance, they are held in the town square and sell food, drink and lovely handmade gifts from open-air stalls. The history of Christmas markets goes back to the late Middle Ages in the German-speaking parts of Europe- in fact, the Vienna “December Market” was a forerunner of the Christmas market.

Getting There:

We flew to Frankfurt, stayed four nights and flew back home. If you are taking a river cruise, you will need to get to Europe. Some of our experience will be of practical use.

We flew from New York to Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines. You might ask: “How can this airline have a nonstop flight to Frankfurt? Don’t airlines need to start or end the flight in their country of origin?  This flight is actually a New York to Singapore flight “with a stop in Frankfurt.”  Passengers continuing to Singapore are told to deplane, stand around for 50 minutes and reboard!

You have heard about the decline in standards across the airlines. You may have firsthand experience. We flew in coach. The price was reasonable, even inexpensive compared to other airlines offering direct flights. The food is quite good. They let you know what your meal choice is a couple of weeks in advance and you can preorder your meal before your flight! They serve wine and beer in flight. My gin and tonic was made with Beefeaters and when I asked for a brandy after dinner, they asked: “Is Martell Cognac OK?”

Wednesday, November 29 th :

We drove to JFK Airport in New York, parked and headed to the check in desk. Lots of construction at JFK. This was more obvious when we drove out of the parking garage. We checked in at the Singapore Airlines counters. We have no status, since this was our first flight. Check in was fast and courteous. TSA Precheck got us through security quickly.

We are holders of American Express Platinum Cards. For us, the Centurion Lounges are the best benefit. Their JFK lounge is located in Terminal 4, which was our departure terminal. If you have airline lounge access through a credit card or an airline club program, you know the lounges are tiered. You might get into the business class lounge, but not the first-class lounge. The Centurion Clubs are spectacular! The food and drink selection is excellent! This club also has a Speakeasy, a nightclub style lounge with a long bar and lots of seating for two under subdued lighting.

We enjoy talking with people. We met two women in the travel business. When we told them about our Christmas market plans, they started talking about river cruises. They are big fans and told us the many reasons why they love them. It’s a great way to see the towns and cities along the rivers in Europe.

Tip: When you fly, you want lounge access, everywhere if possible. Amex does a good job in this regard. If they don’t have a lounge at an airport, there is usually a reciprocal agreement with other lounges.

Thursday, November 10 th :

We arrived in Frankfurt about 10:00 AM, cleared immigration, collected our bags and took the commuter train into Frankfurt City Center. We arrived at our Marriott hotel about noon, The room wasn’t ready, but they let us sit in the M-Club Lounge until it was available.

After a two-hour nap, we headed out to the Frankfurt Christmas Market. This was a taxi ride away in the old town. If you are traveling on a river cruise, you have an advantage. Here’s why:

The first Christmas market took place in Dresden in 1434. They usually take place in the large plaza in front of the big church in any major town or city. This is often adjacent to the river, because in medieval times, the river was an important means of transport. One of the entrances to the Frankfurt Christmas market is at the riverfront. We saw several long, narrow ships tied up.

The Frankfurt Christmas market is huge. Expect to see several hundred stalls, built to resemble wooden huts. Food is a major feature: Stalls specialize. Some focus on grilled sausages, served on buns. Others sell gluhwein, a hot spiced wine beverage. Others sell crepes or potato pancakes.

There is plenty of choice because there and hundreds of booths. Expect to pay about 5 Euro on average for each item you buy. I saw an article about “My 25 favorite Christmas market foods,” so there is plenty of choice.  I also found an outdoor wine bar serving conventional wines like Pinot Grigio, but it was served hot with steam coming off! Prices are pretty standardized on basic food items.

Here is an important caution: Every market has its own Gluhwein mug for that year. It holds about seven ounces. Many people choose to keep them as souvenirs. When you walk up to a counter and buy your mugs of gluhwein, you read the prices as 4 Euro. So far, so good. Two mugs of gluhwein cost us 16 Euro, which came as a surprise! That booth had a deposit of 4Euro per mug. You return the mug and they give your deposit back. We have seen deposits vary from 1 Euro to 4 Euro. Sometimes they give you a plastic coin which you need to return with the mug to get your deposit back.

Not all booths sell food to eat on site. Some sell baked goods, like German Stollen, a Christmas bread. Others sell beeswax candles, handmade wooden ornaments and pottery.

On a Thursday night, the Frankfurt Christmas market was packed! It feels like the entire town turns out! You see people who look like they came from offices, families with their dogs, children in strollers and yes, us tourists. Everyone is having a great time. We walked from one end of the market to the river, then took a taxi back to the hotel.

Tip: Bring cash. (Euros)  These booths work on a cash basis.

Tip: Dress warmly. Wear layers. This is Germany in December. Expect it to be cold.

Tip: There are counters and high top tables where you can eat your food and drink your Gluhwein, but seating is hard to find. Expect to be on your feet 100% of the time.

Friday, December 1 st :

After a great night’s sleep, we had breakfast at the hotel and returned to the Frankfurt Christmas market. Both stores and the market open at 10:00 AM. Because these markets are big tourist attractions, expect all the booths will be open. Crowds are thinner in the morning, heaviest at night.

Friday’s major activity was taking the commuter train to Maina, the medieval town associated with Gutenberg and his printing press. This is 40 minutes away by commuter train from the main train station. Tickets are bought through machines, but there are also ticket counters you can use.

When we arrived in Mainz we took a taxi to the Christmas market. The Mainz Christmas market is smaller than Frankfurt. It probably has about 100 stalls. All of the major food attractions are represented. Unlike Frankfurt, the Mainz market has seating. It has a firepit area with picnic tables and small barrel shaped wooden structures, open on one side and each holding about six people. You reserve them in advance.

The Mainz market recalls the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. You remember “Too big, too small, just right.”  Some Christmas markets are big and very crowded. Small towns might only open their markets on weekends. The Mainz market is just right. We have been visiting annually since about 1990. The food is basically the same. One vendor has the most incredible pork sandwiches, featuring a pork cutlet on a bun! We also bought potato pancakes with applesauce, then tried to carry them through the crowd until we could find a table where we could stand and eat. Although these markets are crowded, it’s important to realize everyone is in good spirits and having a good time.

mini christmas market cruise 2023

Tip: If seating is available and there are two of you, one holds the table while the other makes trips back and forth to bring food to the table.

Tip: Everyone is having fun. You will find stalls selling Santa hats, Elf hats and other headgear. They are fun to wear and make great souvenirs. We came home with five sets of funny eyeglasses and two Santa hats with blinking lights.

Saturday, December 2 nd and Sunday, December 3 rd :

Saturday was our day to take the train to Heidelberg, about 90 minutes away on regional rail. You can also do the trip on the national rail service, similar to our Amtrak, but it is considerably more expensive. After arriving about 2:30 PM, we took a taxi from the train station to the Christmas market.

Heidelberg is known as a university town. Heidelberg Castle sits at a height above the city. (The castle used to have a Christmas market, but apparently it scared the bats, or so they say.)  Heidelberg also is said to have one of the longest pedestrian-only shopping streets in Europe, about 1.8 KM or 1.1 miles. The Christmas market runs from one end of the street to the other, primarily organized around several squares. The taxi driver dropped at the far end and we walked to the other end at Bismarckplatz.

The Heidelberg market allows you to combine shopping in (heated) stores along with shopping at stalls. You can stop into (heated) bakeries and (heated) cafes. You can browse the department stores. We found things to buy in Heidelberg.

We took a taxi back to the train station, caught a train shortly after 6:00 PM and were back at our hotel about 8:00 PM.

Sunday was a quiet day, as the tips will explain.

Tip: If walking is not your favorite activity, the Heidelburg Christmas market has plenty of maps along the route. They indicate where the taxi stands are located.

Tip: Large markets like Heidelberg are open daily. Weekdays and earlier hours are better if you want to avoid the crowds at peak times.

Tip:   The Hallmark movie, “A Heidelberg Holiday” is a very accurate representation of the Christmas market in Heidelberg. Portions were filmed in the city and we saw familiar sights.

Tip: Germany tends to close on Sundays. Many restaurants are closed. Stores are closed. Supermarkets are closed. Christmas markets are open.

Tip: Check online for scheduled days and hours for the Christmas markets you would like to visit. The Frankfurt Christmas market opened on Monday, November 27 th . We visited on Thursday, November 30 th . That might account for the huge crowds this weekend.

Monday, December 4 th :

This was our day to fly home. Our flight was at 8:20 AM. We asked the hotel to arrange for a taxi for 5:00 AM. There was no traffic and we were at the terminal in less than half an hour. Check in was smooth. Singapore Airlines departs from Terminal 1, which is primarily the Lufthansa terminal. We did not have lounge access because we were not booked on a Lufthansa flight, but the seating at the gate was very comfortable. We took off on time and arrive at JFK in New York a little early.

Tip: The taxi fare was about 50 – 60 Euro. At an early hour, it can be preferable to taking the train when you have a flight to catch.

Tip: We leave a tip for the person who cleans the room. We tip the concierge. We tip every time we use the hotel concierge lounge and have food or drink. It doesn’t cost much and it makes a difference.

The German Christmas markets are a fantastic destination.

All P&O Cruises Christmas and New Year cruise offers listed here are just itineraries and not cruise deals for sale. Vessels are ordered alphabetically. Comparing all the ships in the P&O Cruises fleet is a most convenient way to select the best for you Holiday voyages as departures (homeports, dates), destinations (regions, visited countries), itineraries (ports of call, arrival dates, port times) and also to compare cruise prices.

CruiseMapper shows cruise prices per person. These are only indicative fares on the ship's lowest category staterooms. All rates are based on double occupancy (twin share) and don't include cruise line or travel agency promotions, group booking rates or any other special offers and discounts.

Feature P&O Cruises Christmas and New Years Eve Holiday cruising destinations are Transatlantic from Southampton and Caribbean from UK and Barbados.

P&O Cruises Christmas and New Year - CruiseMapper

The P&O cruise line is famous worldwide with its classic British ideas of fun. Themed vacation activities, modern amenities, and most popular destinations and the impeccable level of service are next in the list of the both UK and Australia lines' best features. P&O operates a mid-sized fleet (as a total number of vessels) with both smaller and big ships. P&O Christmas deals could be categorized in the following groups:

  • P&O UK offers mainly Christmas cruises leaving roundtrip from Southampton. They are additionally segmented as Christmas Mini cruises deals, round-trips from the UK to Europe (mostly to the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean) and round-trip Transatlantic crossings from the UK to the Caribbean.
  • P&O Australia Christmas offers are also on round-trip itineraries, with ships departing from Sydney NSW and Brisbane to New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands (Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tasmania).
  • P and O Caribbean Christmas cruise packages include round-trip itineraries from Barbados (departing from Bridgetown). Fly-cruise deals from the UK to the Caribbean are among the region's most popular deals on cruises inclusive of roundtrip flights from both UK and USA.

P&O Christmas Market Cruises

P&O Christmas Market cruises (aka "PO ferries Christmas Markets" ) are themed specials as variations of cheap mini cruise deals from the UK. These voyages feature as shore activities both "freestyle" and guided excursions and tours to the best Belgian Christmas markets, often combined with trips to the Christmas markets in Amsterdam and Paris City .

P&O ferry cruise deals are very popular as December Holiday short-breaks from the UK to Europe. Often, their packages include the ferry tickets, one-way flights back to the UK, and even hotels, coach and riverboat tours, etc. P&O Ferries offers a 3-day ferry cruise departing from Hull (Terminal 2, at 17 PM). This UK Christmas Market cruise is to Bruges . The itinerary is often themed on some popular British movie (like "Fawlty Towers", for example). It offers the perfect "fun & shopping" (or maybe I should call it "shopping fun") excursion for around GBP 130 per person.

Next tables show all P&O Christmas New Year cruise itineraries as ships, departure ports, call ports (dates and arrival/departure times) and regions.

VISIT THE CAPITAL OF CHRISTMAS

Germany’s got loads of famous Christmas markets, which is why we’ve lined up so many German ports on our Yuletide Wonders itinerary. You’ll set sail from Frankfurt, home to one of the largest markets in the country, and tick off Speyer, Plittersdorf and Mainz. All the European Christmas market staples are present and correct in these destinations – expect live music performances and sweet treats. We’ve also included a stop in Kehl, so you can hop across the border to Strasbourg in France. Known as the ‘Capital of Christmas’, the festive period is big business here. The holiday market has been around since Medieval times, and the entire city gets dressed up in the spirit of the season. It’s small enough to see everything on foot, too. So, you can take pictures by the huge Christmas tree in Place Kléber, visit the cathedral’s impressive nativity scene, and warm up with a mulled wine from one of the wooden chalets selling food and drink, all in one day.

TICK OFF THE RHINE’S BEST MARKETS

Another of our other Christmas market river cruise itineraries, Mistletoe and Rhine, is also packed with German ports. The first stop is Cologne, where several markets set up across the city, including outside the famous cathedral. Spend an afternoon picking up handmade gifts to the sound of holiday music from the fairy light-strung performance stage. And, when you’ve finished shopping, the market is just a few minutes’ walk from the city’s brewing houses, plus the Cologne Philharmonic Concert Hall. In Dussledorf, the next stop on your itinerary, there are seven markets to visit. You’ll then cruise to Koblenz, located in the Rhineland-Palatinate wine-growing region. Along with a tasty tipple or two, you can watch the rooftop advent calendar open at the town hall, and sample some traditional German stollen from the market stalls.

Christmas Markets River Cruise Holidays

Sail into the season of European Christmas markets, aglow with the warmth of a simpler time. From wooden stalls with handmade ornaments and hot-mulled wine to grand Christmas cathedrals and glistening lights, a winter cruise on the Danube, Main, or Rhine Rivers is a true gift of timeless tradition. See musical instruments come to life in Rüdesheim, Germany; taste Austrian Christmas cookies while sailing to Vienna; visit Melk’s Benedictine Abbey to marvel at its frescoed ceilings; and see the magical Christmas markets of Budapest, Prague, or Strasbourg.

Is a Christmas market river cruise worth it?

The number-one question people asked me in person and online after I did a Christmas market river cruise down the Danube with Viking in December 2023 was: Is the trip worth it? I vote yes, but there are some things you should know before booking a Christmas market cruise.

If you've had visiting the Christmas markets of Europe on your bucket list, a river cruise is a great way to explore multiple markets in one trip. One of the biggest perks of a river cruise versus a land-based trip is that you unpack once, and your accommodations and dining options float with you down the river from town to town.

Additionally, the cruise director on board acted more like a personal concierge for guests who had questions, giving suggestions for things to do, places to eat and what each Christmas market was known for.

On my seven-night river cruise, I visited six ports and enjoyed a half day of scenic sailing through the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our ports of call were Budapest; Bratislava, Slovakia; Vienna; Krems, Austria; Linz, Austria; and Passau, Germany. Each port had at least one Christmas market.

I was most impressed by Vienna, which had two, but the one near City Hall is the one that makes most of the viral TikTok videos and Instagram reels. The City Hall Christmas market is the larger of the two in the city center and is more photogenic. But be sure to go to both Christmas markets in the city. They are about a 10-minute walk from each other and have different foods to try and souvenirs to buy.

Which rivers are the best for a Christmas markets cruise?

Picking a river for your cruise can be a challenge, especially if you're not familiar with the destinations on the itinerary. Cruises on the Danube and Rhine are the most popular at this time of year because their ports of call are where most of our Christmas traditions were first created.

On the Danube, you can visit destinations like Vienna, Austria and Passau and Regensburg, Germany. Alternatively, on the Rhine, destinations of interest include Amsterdam; Cologne, Germany; Mannheim, Germany; and Strasbourg, France.

After you find a few river cruises that fit your travel dates, dig into each destination and what it has to offer. Christmas markets are open from midmorning until between 8 and 10 p.m., but there's not enough to do at each market to fill that entire time. I usually spent about an hour at the smaller markets in places like Passau and Linz and about two to three hours at the larger markets in Vienna and Budapest. In each port, you'll want to be sure there are more activities and attractions to fill the rest of your time in port.

Which river cruise line is best for a Christmas cruise?

Cruise lines that offer Christmas market cruises include Viking , Avalon Waterways, AmaWaterways , CroisiEurope, Uniworld and Tauck.

Uniworld cruises are the most expensive, with prices ranging from $3,399 to $7,199 for 8- to 11-day sailings throughout the season. Tauck is also pricier than its competitors, but it's one of the few options that has a family cruise option.

Avalon Waterways offers a more affordable way to see the Christmas markets, with cruises starting at $2,167 for six days of traveling from Budapest to Vienna. But be warned, some cruises do sell out almost a year in advance. CroisiEurope cruises are also more affordable and offer closed-loop cruises where you start and end in the same destination, which is not something that most other river cruise lines offer for Christmas market cruises.

If you're looking for a more active cruise, consider AmaWaterways, where bikes are always available to use in port. On the Danube Christmas Markets tour, you can bike from Weissenkirchen to Melk, passing picturesque villages and vineyards.

Viking is known to be slower-paced than its competitors, with a relaxed vibe. Guest won't have as many choices of activities off or on the ship. The included tours are mostly walking tours.

How do I get a good deal on a Christmas market cruise?

Because of the short season for Christmas market river cruises, getting a deal can prove to be a challenge. The best way to get a deal is to book early.

It's common for people to book a Christmas market cruise a year or more in advance. Some companies will offer a discounted deposit for those who book early, and others will offer monetary savings for booking well in advance. Look for wave season (January through March) or Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday deals for river cruise discounts or other promotional offers.

Do Christmas cruises sell out?

Yes, Christmas cruises can and do sell out. Most riverboats only hold 100 to 200 passengers. The best way to ensure you get the type of cabin and sailing date that you want is to book early.

The more desirable balcony and suite rooms often sell out first, followed by rooms with only upper windows. Cruises that take place in the middle of the season, meaning the first two to three weeks of December, are often more popular than the last week of November or the week of Christmas since some markets might not be open at those times.

How cold is Europe in winter?

The weather is, of course, determined by when and where you're going. Middle and Eastern Europe is often colder than Western Europe, the latter of which has a milder winter season. The later in the Christmas market season you travel, the more likely you are to get rain or snow since winter is setting in across the continent.

On my Viking river cruise from Budapest to Passau in Eastern Europe, the winter weather varied from days with cold rain where I needed to bundle up with extra waterproof layers, to beautiful sunny days where I could strip off my winter jacket for a few hours while touring the Christmas markets.

I used the weather app on my phone to help me determine what to pack. Even 10 days out from my trip, the app was fairly accurate with what the temperatures would be, which ranged from the 20s to the high 40s, and what the day would look like.

What should I wear on my river cruise?

Packing for a river cruise in the middle of winter was the most challenging part of the trip for me. Not only did I have to buy winter clothes since I live in Florida, but I needed to make sure I brought enough layers to keep me warm.

For days exploring the ports, I wore jeans and waterproof boots with long cozy socks, plus a thermal long-sleeved shirt under a sweater. I also brought a midweight puffy winter jacket to wear off the ship. Accessories like a warm hat or ear warmers, gloves and a scarf were also helpful.

Depending on the river cruise line you book, the onboard attire may range from casual to a little more fancy. During the day on Viking, many people wore jeans or sweatpants and a casual shirt. Evenings brought out the more elevated fashion; women donned cute sweaters and dresses, while men dressed in jeans and nicer tops or sweaters.

If you can, I suggest bringing at least two pairs of outdoor shoes in case your waterproof shoes can't handle the snow or a few days of rain in a row. I brought a pair of fleece-lined Crocs to wear off the ship in a few ports where the weather was warmer with no precipitation.

When should I arrive at the embarkation port?

Always try to arrive at least a day early for any river cruise, especially if you're flying overseas. For some river cruises, the embarkation port is just that, a place to get on the ship and leave. If you arrive the day your cruise begins, you could miss out on exploring the city.

Even if your Christmas market river cruise does have an overnight stay in the embarkation city with tours the next day, it's still best to arrive a day early. Travel days from the United States to Europe can be unpredictable, with delays and missed connections, so you should give yourself plenty of time to get to the ship so you don't miss it.

Some river cruise lines offer pre-cruise extensions that you can bundle with the cruise booking and allow you to arrive early at the embarkation port. These extensions include a hotel stay, and some include a few meals and a guided tour, plus transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the ship.

Are the markets all the same?

Every Christmas market is different in the overall vibe and what it has to offer for visitors. Do some research before you leave home to see what the highlight of each Christmas market is. I did a lot of my research on TikTok and Instagram so I could see what the person was talking about.

In Budapest, the Christmas market in the square in front of St. Stephen's Basilica was a good mix of crafts, decorations and tasty food to try. On the other hand, the Christmas market in Bratislava was more of a food market with just a few stalls for buying goodies to bring home with you.

My favorite Christmas market was the one at City Hall in Vienna, which happens to be one of the most popular in Europe. It had everything from ice skating and photo-worthy backdrops to prepackaged sweets and plenty of Christmas decorations to try to fit into my already full suitcase.

What are the best things to buy at European Christmas markets?

Popular things to buy at Christmas markets throughout Europe include nativity scenes, handmade toys, nutcrackers, candles and glass or wood ornaments. If something catches your eye, buy it; there's no guarantee you'll find a similar item at the next market.

For example, in Vienna, I spotted a gold beaded ornament that I loved, and I bought it for about 10 euros (about $10.86). I never saw any other beaded ornaments at the Christmas markets before or after Vienna, so I was glad I purchased it when I saw it.

Do make sure that you're buying local products. On my Viking cruise, we were told that some markets are starting to sell mass-produced goods from China. If you want to support local artisans, ask the vendor or look for stickers that say where the products were made.

What should I eat or drink at each market?

Eating and drinking is a key component of the Christmas market experience. Each market sells an abundance of food, and the food options change from town to town.

Before you cruise, make a list of regional foods you wish to try in each market. Once at the market, look around to see which food stands are popular with locals. Follow their lead because they likely know who has the best treats.

Here are my favorite sweet and savory treats from each Christmas market I visited on my Viking cruise.

  • Budapest: chimney cake rolled in crushed hazelnuts
  • Bratislava: pork and garlic spiral sausage, potato pancakes similar to latkes but the size of a dinner plate
  • Vienna: Champagne cream-filled donut
  • Linz: raclette cheese on toasted bread
  • Passau: cheese, ham and onion sengzelten (a sort of flatbread with toppings), traditional German bratwurst

Drinking at Christmas markets around Europe normally means getting a hot glass of glühwein, which is mulled wine made with red wine, spices and fruit. The drink is normally served in cute mugs that you can keep as a fun and cheap souvenir. If you don't want to keep your mug, you can return it and get back a euro or two.

What else can I do in each market besides shop?

Each Christmas market is different, and the things to do besides shopping are also varied.

Most of the larger markets, like the ones in Bratislava and Budapest, have live music playing from a bandstand that you can enjoy. In Budapest, the market near St. Stephen's Basilica had a projection show on the exterior of the church, too.

While touring one of the Linz markets, I stumbled upon a small carnival where rides and games were set up for kids to enjoy. Then in Vienna, the City Hall Christmas market had an ice skating rink that was popular with families and couples.

What times do the markets open and close?

Generally, the Christmas markets open in midmorning, anywhere from 9 to 10 a.m., and close between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Some markets will open earlier, and some will close later.

The best way to know the times of each market you're visiting is to do a quick internet search close to the time of your river cruise. Put the name of the city and the words "Christmas Market hours" into your preferred online search tool to get the operational hours for each market.

Do you need cash for the Christmas markets?

You should always carry some cash with you for the Christmas markets. While many of the vendors will take credit cards or Apple Pay, others only want cash.

It's also a good idea to know the currency of each destination you're going to. For example, in Hungary, euros are not accepted anywhere, so I exchanged dollars for Hungarian forints to use at the Christmas market.

What can I do in each city before or after the Christmas market?

Your river cruise will offer an included tour every day. On my Viking river cruise, each day's included tour was a walking tour of the city to point out historic landmarks and show people how to get to the Christmas markets.

After a few days, I found the walking tours somewhat repetitive. They all showed off the major church in the city center and described how the city navigated various wars. The guides make or break the tours, and you never know who you'll get. So I used the tours to help navigate to the city center, then ventured off on my own with my travel companion. We used walking directions on Google Maps as a way to get to destinations we were interested in and to get back to the ship once we were ready to warm up for a while.

River cruises include a lot of perks, including docking right at the edge of most of the towns you visit. This means that in many destinations, you can walk from the ship to the middle of town in mere minutes. Before or after visiting the Christmas market, you can spend your time exploring the city, dining in a local restaurant, sipping hot coffee in a cafe or popping into shops.

For larger destinations like Vienna, Paris or Amsterdam, you might want to do extra research on what there is to do in the city for free or at a discount. Many museums offer free or discounted entry on select days or to select ages.

Bottom line

If you've ever wanted to explore European Christmas markets, a river cruise is an easy way to do it. Many of the best river cruise brands and guided group tour companies offer Christmas markets river cruises throughout Europe.

You'll make the most of your vacation if you do a little bit of research to determine what there is to do in each city before or after your market visit, which local foods you should try and what to shop for at the markets themselves.

No matter which river you traverse, cruise line you pick, or Christmas markets you visit, you'll be able to immerse yourself in European holiday culture, learning about the food and drink specialties of the places you visit and how each destination celebrates the holidays. And since you're on a river cruise, you can experience multiple cities and countries while someone else does the navigation for you, and you only have to unpack once.

Cologne Christmas Markets

There is nothing more authentic than a truly traditional Christmas market in Germany, so a visit to the Cologne Christmas Markets is a must for a classic memorable Christmas break away.

Your break away begins in Newcastle where a ferry awaits your arrival, departing late afternoon bound for Amsterdam. During the crossing you'll have plenty of time to enjoy a meal if you wish, enjoy the live entertainment on-board and to have a drink or two in the bars on-board. As the sailing is an overnight crossing you have the choice of cabins to stay in depending upon your budget. The following morning you will dock in Ijmuiden where a comfortable coach will be waiting, ready to transfer you to Cologne. The journey takes approximately three and a quarter hours as you drive from Holland through to Germany, passing a variety of towns and cities along the way.

You will be taken to your hotel for the stay in Cologne where you can check-in and unload. It is then up to you what you do for the duration of your stay. Cologne is a vibrant city and has plenty of significant architecture to admire including the imposing twin-spired Cologne Cathedral which is where the main Christmas market can be found. A short distance away is the shopping district of Cologne where you can find aplenty of designer names. A short distance away from the Cathedral is the River Rhine which is worth a visit.

Besides the Christmas markets there is plenty to do in Cologne as there are loads of galleries, museums, attractions and more. It is a great place to do some essential Christmas shopping!

When it is sadly time to return home then a coach will collect you from your hotel, taking you back to Amsterdam. An overnight ferry back to Newcastle waits, where you can enjoy the live on-board entertainment and can do a bit of last minute shopping on-board.

Cologne Christmas Markets Mini Cruises sail during December from Newcastle but can be pre-booked early on.

Prices start from £259 per person based on two sharing or from £226 per person based on four sharing.

You will dock in Ijmuiden the following morning and will be taken by a comfortable coach to Bruges which takes around three and a half hours. You will be dropped off at your hotel for the break and once you've checked in you can explore Bruges and the Christmas markets at leisure.

At the end of your stay the coach will transfer you back to Amsterdam for an overnight sailing back to Newcastle.

Bruges Christmas Markets Mini Cruises sail during December from Newcastle but can be pre-booked early on.

Prices start from £229 per person based on two sharing or from £198 per person based on four sharing.

Amsterdam Christmas Markets

This three night break to Amsterdam is perfect for getting in some Christmas shopping, and the break can be extended with additional nights spent in a hotel in Amsterdam.

Your mini cruise break begins in Newcastle where you set sail in the late afternoon. When you book your mini cruise online you'll have the chance to pre-book evening meals on both the outgoing and return sailing which is highly recommended.

You can also pre-book a hot buffet breakfast on both crossings for the following morning.

Choose from a range of cabins to suit your party group and budget. If you are travelling with children and are having a family break then there are cabins perfect for you. If you are travelling as a couple then you can choose from a budget inside cabin or a more opulent Commodore De Luxe suite.

You dock near Amsterdam the following morning where a coach will take you to Amsterdam centre. From here you can check into the hotel you booked as part of your mini cruise. It is then up to you how you spend your time in Amsterdam.

Cram in a bit of sightseeing in amongst some essential retail therapy. Amsterdam is a great place to pick up some unique Christmas presents and your visit may coincide with a festive parade and ceremony held throughout the Christmas period in the city.

On the day of departure a coach will take you from Amsterdam city centre back to the port in Ijmuiden where you will catch the overnight sailing back to Newcastle. You'll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the live on-board entertainment. You will arrive back in Newcastle the following morning.

Amsterdam Christmas Markets Mini Cruises sail during November and December each year from Newcastle but can be pre-booked early on.

Prices start from £115 per person based on two sharing or from £82 per person based on four sharing.

These sailings are always popular so it's worth booking as early as you can.

Hamelin Christmas Markets

Hamelin was a wonderful picturesque setting to host a Christmas market, with a chance to sample the local foods and drinks  - an essential part of any Christmas market!

The mini cruise departed from Newcastle late in the afternoon sailing overnight to Amsterdam. Here a coach transferred passengers to the quaint German fairy tale town. Guests could then explore Hamelin at their own leisure discovering the architecture, shopping and cuisine.

At the end of the stay a 4 hour coach transfer back to Amsterdam was included to meet the return overnight ferry back to Newcastle.

I hope these tours come back again in the future but for the time being the company is focussing on the alternative destinations above.

Cancelled - Brussels Christmas Markets

Brussels is a wonderful place to visit and the Christmas markets are truly something memorable. Held annually on Place Sainte Catherine, the Christmas market is huge, with an ice rink and Ferris wheel. Head on over to Grande Place to see the extraordinary medieval architecture and to sample some authentic Belgian chocolate! It's a great place to visit for your Christmas shopping.

Your holiday starts in Newcastle where you board your ferry. How you spend the evening is up to you but there's a choice of dining options, entertainment and lounges to choose from. There's also a choice of accommodation available depending upon your budget.

You'll arrive in the port of Ijmuiden the next morning where a coach will transfer you to Brussels. It's around a 2.5 hour journey but it doubles up as a sightseeing tour as you'll pass through loads of varying areas along the way.

You'll be taken to your hotel in Brussels which is home for two nights. It's then up to you what you do and how you spend your time. Take a look at the architecture, browse the shops, sample the local cuisine and meander around the myriad of chalets in the Christmas markets.

On the day of your return sailing you will be met at the hotel by your coach driver where you will be chauffeured back to Ijmuiden for the evening sailing. Relax on-board as the ferry sails across the North Sea back to Newcastle where you dock the following morning.

Brussels Christmas Markets Mini Cruises sail during December from Newcastle but can be pre-booked early on.

The dull-but-necessary small print

All deals are subject to availability and can be withdrawn by the operator without prior notice. The lead-in prices (otherwise known as the 'from' prices) are, unless otherwise stated above, based on two adults sharing the cheapest available cabin on the cheapest available date. Typically the best prices are available at the start of any promotion period so the earlier you book the better choice of sailing dates and cabin availability you should have. Mid-week sail dates are likely to be cheaper than weekend sail dates.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

mini christmas market cruise 2023

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
