Regent Cruiser 2021 Review

Is this stylish new, full composite slide-out tourer the best chinese caravan yet.

Regent is one of the better known caravan brands in Australia, with thousands of Melbourne-built Regent vans hitting the road over the past three decades.

Now, to coincide with Regent’s 30 th anniversary in 2021, the current owner has decided to rejuvenate the brand with an all-new range of upmarket full composite models that replace the previous range of traditional build, timber framed and aluminium clad Regent vans.

Like its big-selling sister brand  Snowy River,  production of the eye-catching new Regent vans takes place in China, with final fit-out and assembly at Regent's large factory in Somerton, Victoria.

regentcruiser 5

Aimed at bitumen tourers, the glossy new Regent range currently consists of five tandem axle, fixed-wall Discoverer models with body lengths from 19ft 6in to 23ft 6in and a choice of couple and family ensuite layouts. There are also three tandem axle Cruiser slide-out variants with 20ft 6in to 22ft long bodies and a variety of couple's ensuite floorplans.

Best of all worlds

While largely built in China, the new Regent vans are best described as a blend of British/European construction techniques and design influences, with the ‘big box’ interior space and storage benefits of Australian-built caravans.

regentcruiser 14

Our review van, the 21ft 6in Regent Cruiser slide-out model, certainly looks the part with its streamlined, round-cornered exterior styling, with sandwich-panelled walls over an aluminium frame, flush-mounted windows, and spare wheel recessed neatly into the rear bodywork, with contrasting front and rear black decals and Raptor coating, black locker doors and matte black alloy wheels with chunky all-terrain tyres

Regent has also taken a bold approach with the front-end design, with the front boot lid rising vertically on cantilever hinges in a similar manner to the rear boot of  German Knaus caravans.

A separate stone shield for the vans’ front opening window is conventionally top-hinged, but is recessed into the fibreglass bodywork for a smoother external appearance when travelling.

regentcruiser 17

It all appears sturdily put together and easy to open and close, although the flimsier fibreglass cover for the twin A-frame mounted 9kg gas bottles, secured by two side clasps and a rubber cord, proved more fiddly.

There’s also a good amount of storage space inside both the alloy lined front boot and large separate LED-lit tunnel boot for all your outside gear including hoses, cords, tools and camp chairs.

regentcruiser 37

Ready to tour

Our review van had a smooth Hammertone finish on the steel chassis, but all Regent Cruisers will come standard with a Raptor protective coating on the chassis. Also fitted to the A-frame is an exposed brass tap and mains water connection, along with a small rack for fire wood in front of the gas bottles.

Also part of the Cruiser package is torsion beam independent suspension with a 50mm ball coupling, removable jockey wheel, 12in electric brakes and wind-down corner stabilisers.

regentcruiser 22

While not designed to be taken too far off the beaten track, some Raptor front, rear and (optional) side protection  helps shield the glossy panels from flicked up stones, and there’s decent road clearance, checker plate-protected water tanks and X-plate style underfloor sheeting to reduce the chance of underbody damage.

Other desirable external standard features include a gas bayonet, Dometic security entry door, and a picnic table that folds down to reveal a cavity with an extendable arm and connections for the supplied 24in Smart TV and aerial (there’s a similar TV set-up inside too).

regentcruiser 23

The 21ft 6in Regent Cruiser also gets a hot/cold external shower locker on the offside wall, not far from inlets for the two 95 litre freshwater tanks and solitary 100Ah lithium battery (there’s another chassis-mounted checkerplate box fitted for a second battery and a grey water tank is another option). A 170W rooftop solar panel is also fitted for free camping.

Along with powered twin entry steps and a 17ft electric awning, other Jayco Silverline-like features fitted include two side cameras and a rear camera that deliver a 270-degree view outside the caravan via your car’s internal display.

regentcruiser 32

Spacious internal layout

While the other two Regent Cruiser models feature slide-out, east-west queen beds, the 21ft 6in Cruiser gets a fixed, front north-south bed and offside club lounge slide-out, which takes about 40 seconds to fully extend using the switch inside the door. With its soft grey leather upholstery, multi-adjustable dinette table and comfy seating for up to six people, the club lounge is the undoubted centerpiece of the new Regent van, delivering lots of relaxing and eating room while helping create extra floor space through the middle of the van and around the kitchen area.

regentcruiser 53 nzdx

Keen chefs will also be pleased with the four-hob cooktop, grille, oven, rangehood, under-bench microwave, and 188 litre three-way fridge/freezer fitted in what is a quite generous-sized caravan kitchen. There’s a good amount of available benchtop for food prep and a few cupboards and drawers for storage, along with handy twin pull-out pantries next to the fridge.

The matte black sink is deep but misses out on a drainer, and there’s a matching mixer tap and separate filtered water tap. Also located in the kitchen area is the Fusion stereo with inside and outside speakers and the Projecta digital display for monitoring water and battery levels.

regentcruiser 58

More storage space

There’s also some excellent enclosed storage options above, around and under the main bed, as well as under the lounge seats, although you have to pull out a few cushions to get to it.

Despite a big front-load washing machine mounted under the benchtop, there are quite a few storage options in the ensuite too, with plenty of cupboard space for toiletries, spare bedding and towels, plus a handy built-in laundry bag.

regentcruiser 62

Regent hasn’t skimped on internal 240V sockets or lighting either, with a decent array of ceiling lights and mood lighting plus four reading lights in total, not to mention LED lights on the two main roof-mounted hatches. Power sockets are located in the kitchen, ensuite and in the two bedside nooks. Also worth mentioning is the above-average interior headroom, with no threat of banging your head on the roof-mounted air-conditioner unless you play for the Australian Boomers. And there are plenty of interior windows with built-in screens and blinds, including a big window either side of the bed.

regentcruiser 51

Master bedroom privacy

Adding to the apartment-like feel in the 21ft 6in Regent Cruiser is a solid wall partition and full height, sliding privacy curtain that will block off the ‘master’ bedroom with its plush coil spring queen mattress from the rest of the living area.

The full width ensuite also gets a nice solid sliding door, with sufficient floorspace between the Dometic cassette toilet and fibreglass shower cubicle to get changed without fear of bruising. The shower space doesn’t feel cramped either, incorporating a side-wall footrest as well a spot for the soap and shampoo. And narcissistic types will appreciate both the big shower door mirror and vanity mirror tiles located behind the stylish black bowl sink.

regentcruiser 54

While it probably won’t appeal to dirt road adventurers, the 21ft 6in Regent Cruiser with its excellent insulation, upmarket features, user-friendly set-up and competitive $80,000 price-tag, is a genuine alternative to Jayco’s popular Silverline slide-out tourers.

Despite its three tonne-plus bulk, it towed quite well behind a latest Mazda BT-50 dual-cab ute and, while we only spent a few hours with the review van, we were impressed with the fit and finish as well as overall design and operation.

Is this the best Chinese caravan to date? On first impressions, it’s right up there…

Regent Monarch 23

At last year’s Best Aussie Vans contest, the Regent Cruiser impressed all the judges with a well designed and beautifully appointed interior. So, when the company suggested we have a look at the even more luxurious Monarch slide-out, we agreed straight away.

Regent RV has been manufacturing upmarket caravans in Melbourne for more than 30 years and has a solid reputation for going the extra mile in build quality and innovation. It moved to a CNC-produced plywood frame a few years back when it saw Australian buyers were demanding more modern technology to cope with long-distance travel and a harsh climate.

As a long-term player in the local market, Regent knows the features discerning buyers want, and the Monarch delivers on those expectations. First impressions play a big part in the buying experience, and the Monarch is sure to win friends. Even before the slide-out is deployed, the upmarket appeal is evident, but the extra room the moving bedroom creates is beyond expectation.

regent travel trailer

As mentioned above, Regent steps outside the norm of most Melbourne builders with a CNC-formed plywood frame. This finger-jointed structure is less susceptible to water damage and has precisely fitted insulation panels for improved temperature control in hot and cold weather. Regent lists a benefit of the ply walls as allowing the structure to expand and contract as temperatures change without damaging the rest of the build.

Cladding is the traditional-looking raised profile aluminium sheeting in white with black trim. Optional XPS composite panelling would impart a more modern appeal but loses out with a weight penalty, and the big Monarch with a 7m (23ft) internal length needs all the weight-saving it can muster. Black checkerplate covers the lower sections on the sides and at the front.

Like all vans in the range, the Monarch is built on a DuraGal Austrail RV chassis that is laser-cut for consistency and robot-welded for strength and precise alignment. The 6in A-frame extends back to the spring hangers, and the 6in chassis has 6in risers. The review van employs a tandem AL-KO Rocker Roller load-sharing leaf spring suspension but if you want something a bit more dirt oriented there’s an optional All-Terrain Pack with an independent Cruisemaster XT system, DO35 hitch and a three-arm rear bar for the spare.

Fifteen-inch alloy wheels are shod with 235x75 light truck tyres, and braking is from AL-KO 12in drums. Attention to detail underneath can be lacking in many caravans, but there’s nothing shoddy or forgotten in the way the electrical and plumbing is completed on the Monarch. Two 95L water tanks have metal guards, while the battery is located in a box on the chassis to offer more storage space inside.

THE EXTERIOR

A 23ft van is big by contemporary standards, and even behind the chunky Nissan Patrol it looked impressively majestic. There’s no brashness of a gaudy offroader, but the Monarch shows that a well -proportioned cruising van can still make a statement. The mainly white walls have a simple arrow decal emblazed with the Monarch brand, and I noted a proudly displayed logo of the company’s 'Best Build Quality' from our Best Aussie Vans event.

Storage is generous with both a front boot and a full-width tunnel up front ahead of the entry door. An alloy panel covers the front window, and the review van had a Cruisemaster DO35 hitch as an option replacing the standard ball. Other features here include twin 9kg gas bottles with a high mount regulator but no stone guard, plus a handy tray for hoses. ESC is standard.

Along the side are a picnic table, plenty of LED lighting, external speakers and the usual exterior points for 12V and a TV. Raised profile sheeting continues at the rear end where a single spare sits on a bar, and a rear camera helps with parking and keeping an eye on following traffic.

A Thule electric step snaps down to ease entry through a rearward opening security door to the impressive and convivial interior.

HOME ON WHEELS

Regent positions itself at the premium end of the caravan market and with the Monarch 23 selling at $10 short of $100K, you would expect it to look the part. It does that in style, and the extra room of the relatively long van plus the bedroom slide-out will make the big Regent a popular choice for those looking for extended travel or holidays.

Just forward of the entry is a roomy club lounge sumptuously clad in black leather, and with views all around once the front cover is raised over the front window.

One thing the van isn’t short of is storage. Overhead cupboards abound, and the lounge has space below for seldom-used items.

Rearward is the kitchen and bedroom, while the generously proportioned ensuite extends across the back.

In what I’m sure will be a popular design feature, the rear section of the van can be closed off with dividers and a sliding curtain offers a welcome level of privacy.

Light and air flood the cabin, and the 1.85m ceiling height gives a roomy impression. Options for colour palettes are extensive with 28 cabinet choices, another 28 for benchtops and a dark or light timber look for flooring. The review van looked fresh but enduring with modern touches like LED mood lights at floor level and CNC square-finish cabinets.

An immediate benefit of the extra room inside is a large kitchen that covers both sides of the central living space. On the driver's side is a stainless steel sink with draining board and the 186L Thetford fridge/freezer. Under the bench, I found large drawers, a slide-out pantry and a sensibly located microwave. Opposite is the bonus second kitchen bench with Swift 500 oven, grill and four-burner cooktop as well as even more drawers and overhead cupboards.

CLASSY SLEEPING QUARTERS

After checking there’s enough room at the side of the van, it only takes about 20 seconds at the push of a switch at the electrical cabinet to deploy the sliding bed the 800mm or so out into space on the driver’s side. This opens the bedroom to generous proportions even when you close the curtains. But hang on a second, there’s more button-pushing if you have enough energy because the next trick is to raise the 32in LED television from its neat passenger-side cabinet.

The queen bed has an innerspring mattress with Pillowtop, and there are four storage drawers below as well as air struts to extra storage space. Access is smooth to the side of the bed and also to the gloss white overhead cupboards that contrast nicely against the matt black leather bedhead.

As well as the newer 7m (23ft) Monarch version on show here, Regent also boast a 6.8m (22ft 6in) version with a central lounge slide, but for me the van reviewed wins in usability and layout. The more private bedroom and the well-positioned club lounge add to the larger model’s ergonomics and ambience.

BIGGER ENSUITE

A lot of builders describe their ensuites as spacious, and I probably fall into the trap of going along with that. But the amenities in the Monarch have more room than most, as can be seen with the inclusion of a 300mm-wide floor-to-ceiling cupboard forward of the shower cubicle. That's an extra 300mm of room to move, and that makes a big difference if the bathroom size is essential.

As well as a moulded shower you get a decent sized vanity, big mirror, a washing machine and more mood lighting at floor level.

SIMPLE SOLAR

Perhaps with the presumption that many owners of a Monarch will spend most of their time in caravan parks, the off-grid power setup is limited to a single 150W solar panel and a single 105Ah AGM battery. There’s an option for a second battery box and an extra battery, so it’s an easy fix if you want to be more independent. A BMPRO Plus35 charger and management system is mounted in an overhead kitchen cupboard alongside a BMPRO Trek display for monitoring power and water condition, and all the wiring is neatly installed.

Our review of the big Regent was undertaken in conjunction with our test of the Nissan Patrol in issue 599, so we had a good range of conditions to explore across the hills north of Melbourne and along stretches of motorway.

The V8 petrol Patrol handled the nearly 3t weight with ease, happily maintaining freeway speeds and with loads of power up hills. There was no harshness or banging from the van with a well-balanced feel on the road. It behaved perfectly over all conditions with no wandering or wallowing across all the speed ranges and through a variety of corners and road conditions.

CUSTOMER CARE

Regent vans are sold through GreenRV in Queensland and Greater Southern RV in South Australia and the company has repair agents nationwide. While there are options to upgrade, the default warranty is 12 months, which seems unrealistic for a top-end product. Regent has dedicated warranty staff to prioritise any issues.

The $99,990 price reflects the Monarch’s place in the upper end of the market. But at that price, it will suit couples looking for a beautifully finished and more substantial-than-average long distance tourer. It’s a van you could easily spend extended holidays aboard, luxuriating in the generous room and ample comfort.

The 19’6″ Discoverer’s head-turning, aerodynamic design delivers improved fuel efficiency and a safer, overall smoother driving experience. Underneath sits a Raptor Coat chassis with a 50mm ball coupling and torsion beam suspension included as standard. The Discoverer boasts a 3500 ATM, which gives you maximum payload capacity. Meanwhile, a Lippert Sway Control system adds to the Discoverer’s easy towability.

EXTERIOR GALLERY

Future-proof foundation.

Regent believes that composite construction is the future, and this method is incorporated in the floors, walls, and rooves of every 2022 build. The robust combination of an aluminium frame, high-density XPS insulating foam, and a fibreglass finish, results in a caravan that’s built for Australia’s variable conditions.

Savvy Storage

Regent has paid significant attention to the 19’6′ Discoverer’s outdoor storage options. New lockers with twist lock latches are considerably more dust proof and won’t pop open on corrugated roads. A bus-style lift up front locker and tunnel boot add to the Discoverer’s clever use of space.

Regent’s 19’6″ Discoverer is packed with features other brands offer as optional upgrades. This is seen by the advanced technology that includes a reversing camera system that transmits camera views to the tow vehicle’s dashboard. The van also comes with 12″ electric brakes, 15″ black alloy wheels, two 9 kilogram gas bottles, and two 95 litre freshwater tanks. Raptor front and side protection is also a standard feature to shield the glossy panels from flicked up stones. Plus, a 16-foot awning will keep you comfortable in the shade year-round.

Regent Cruiser 22 Review

  • Published: July 23, 2022

CRUISING IN STYLE

Living space in any caravan or motorhome has its restrictions, but Malcolm Street discovers that a slide-out fitted into a caravan, like a Regent Cruiser adds a whole new dimension to the layout.

Here in New Zealand, slide-out fitted caravans and motorhomes are not as commonplace as, say, the USA, where rigs with two or even three slide-outs are often seen. So it was with interest that I reviewed a Regent Cruiser 22ft. Imported into New Zealand by Vanari Caravans, there are three different models in Regent’s Cruiser range, all with slide-outs, the 22ft being the longest.

From the outside, the Cruiser 22ft is a slick looking caravan indeed – but I’ll get to that in a moment. Stepping aboard through the front habitation door reveals a spacious layout, even with the slide-out closed up. It’s tempting to sit down in the front club lounge and relax, but locating the switch to open the slide-out means the layout can be better appreciated.

The general layout splits neatly into four. The first section holds the front lounge, the second a split kitchen, the third the bedroom area with the bedhead firmly fitted into the slide-out, and the fourth area a full width bathroom across the rear of the caravan. The slide-out has to be open, at least partially, to gain access to the bathroom. The layout is nicely proportioned and the bedroom and bathroom can be curtained off from the rest of the caravan.

The general colour scheme is mostly glossy white and grey with a few touches of black here and there. The solid cabinetry is manufactured from solid plywood, CNC machine cut, and generally speaking, it all fits together very nicely.

As I noted above, the leather upholstered front club lounge is a great place to chill out. With the multi movement table in position, four people can sit comfortably but for only two there’s plenty of room to stretch out. If needed the table can easily be dropped down and the lounge turned into a bed.

Overhead lockers are fitted all round, and the clam shell handles are easy to use. Plenty of windows give a great view of the happenings outside and with the big roof hatch above, there’s no shortage of light and ventilation. When evening comes, there’s no lessening of available light either. In fact, it’s multiple choice – a strip light under the overhead lockers, two reading lights, two ceiling lights and the inbuilt lighting of the roof hatch. Lighting for all occasions – and that’s just the club lounge!

regent travel trailer

EAT & DRINK

Split across the aisle, the nearside bench is fitted out with a Mobicool four burner hob, grill and oven that’s adjacent to a fairly large square sink. The hob does come with a flush lid, which helps since there isn’t a great deal of benchtop space otherwise. In addition to the three overhead lockers, there are a couple of cupboards and a cutlery drawer.

On the opposite side, the second kitchen bench has a generous array of drawers and it’s also the location for an under-bench NCE microwave oven, Regent obviously opting for that rather than the often height-challenging overhead locker area. Adjacent to the bench is a full height pantry with a triple array of slide-out wire baskets; next to that is the final kitchen essential, a Dometic RUA6408X 188 litre three- way fridge. A two-door model, there’s plenty of fridge and freezer capacity. Not really a kitchen item but useful for the cook, a Smart TV is mounted on the pantry cabinet which can also easily be seen from the front club lounge.

regent travel trailer

Using the slide-out for the 1850mm x 1530mm bed is an idea that works well. A caravan queen-sized bed like this definitely takes up space, but there’s easy access from both sides, and the walk around area at the base of the bed is good too. Each bed occupant gets a reading light, double 230V power point and USB socket. Three overhead lockers make this storage area slightly awkward to get at; however I did like the little storage compartments with hinged lids on either side at pillow level.

Facing the bed is a waist-high cabinet with four cupboards; on either side of that is a narrow wardrobe with a set of three drawers below. There’s certainly no shortage of general storage nor shelf space. Windows on either side of the caravan give a good cross flow of air.

The Cruiser caravan is currently the flagship of the Regent range, and that shows everywhere, including the rear bathroom which has the expected features like the shower cubicle, Dometic cassette toilet and a classy looking vanity cabinet with its pedestal wash basin, cupboards, overhead lockers and mirror door cabinets where the mirror usually is. Like the rest of the caravan, the low-level lighting under the cabinets not only looks good but it’s very handy for night time trips to the loo!

regent travel trailer

Although imported to New Zealand from Australia, the Regent range is mostly built in China. The little clue is the narrower than usual width of 2400mm so that the vehicle can fit in a container. Composite walls with an integrated welded aluminium frame are used for the overall structure. The offside slide-out is the feature that requires a bit more strength in the offside wall. The roof, walls (32mm) and the floor (42mm) are all single piece items, thus having the dual effect of strength and minimising water leaks. The fibreglass mouldings that are used back and front create a stylish overall look, and the front window stone shield neatly integrates into the body line rather than looking like an add-on. Blum cantilever style hinges are used for the “bus door” on the front boot – an elegant feature that not only works well but looks good too.

In addition to the boot, there’s also a front tunnel storage. Fitted between the drawbar rails rather than mounted on them, the gas cylinders have a separate moulded cover which makes the cylinders easy to get on and off as required. The end result of all that is a very streamlined look to the front area.

The electric awning is standard, as is the external entertainment box and the picnic table. At the rear, the spare wheel mounting is integrated into the body moulding, rather than hanging off the rear bumper: a nice aesthetic touch. All the windows are double glazed acrylics, and the habitation door is very stylish, with an egg timer glass insert.

Under the caravan, the 150mm RHS steel used for the drawbar and 100mm RHS steel for the main rails and the steel chassis have a Raptor coating for all round protection. AL-KO Independent Rubber Suspension (IRS) is fitted to the tandem axles. Alloy chequer plate-protected 95 litre water tanks are fitted on either side of the axles, and the slightly larger 100 litre grey tank is fitted towards the rear. Overall, the sub chassis area of the van looks clean, with all the pipework and cabling strapped up out of the way.

regent travel trailer

POWER AND WATER

In the electrical department, the Cruiser is fitted with a single 100AH lithium battery along with a 170W solar panel. If a second battery is required, there is a second battery box attached to the offside main rail. For monitoring and controlling the 12V power, there’s a Projecta PM300 battery management system. Inside, USB charger points are located everywhere, both in reading light mountings and some GPOs. For television viewers, a Smart TV and automatic satellite are supplied as standard. Those who enjoy extended remote stays will appreciate a minimal 12V load – lights, fan and portable device chargers and the three-way fridge on LP gas. There’s no hot water tank because the Fogatti LP gas heater is instantaneous.

HITTING THE ROAD

Vanari Caravans will supply the caravan ready to roll; that includes all the necessary power leads, water hoses, all on-road costs (three year WOF and one year rego), as well as the necessary certification like a Self-Containment Certificate and a New Zealand electrical WOF.

Having an external length of 7770mm, a tare mass of 2970kg and an ATM of 3500kg, the Cruiser 22ft is not small nor lightweight, so something like a Toyota LandCruiser would be the vehicle of choice. Double cab utes, despite having a 3500kg tow rating, also have a restrictive Gross Combined Mass (GCM) of circa 6000kg, so really aren’t in the picture for this sort of caravan. Generally speaking, the unladen van towed quite well and it was quite a relaxing drive, but it was occasionally twitchy in some undulating road conditions. When reversing, the 270-degree wireless camera is a very handy feature indeed, especially with a longer van.

The Regent Cruiser is an impressive looking van, inside and out. It’s very striking, and the slide-out makes a considerable difference to the living. space. It also results in a very user-friendly layout that offers all the comforts of home in a very neat package.

Vintage Mobile Home Series: Stewart Bi-Level Mobile Home

A Bi-Level Mobile Home is a favorite among vintage mobile home fans. Their great use of space and unique floor plans were ahead of their time.

Stewart Bi-Level Mobile Home

This restored Stewart Bi-Level Mobile Home is a beauty! Unfortunately, the park it’s located in closed in January and the owners needed to sell it. Since the original Craigslist ad has been deleted I wasn’t able to get an update on the home.

Here’s the original Craigslist ad:

A vintage double decker travel trailer made by Stewart. In over all very good condition. I am posting this for a friend but the details are as follows. This trailer has been in DeAnza park for at least the past 20 years. The electrical and plumbing have been redone. It can be pulled with a truck but will obviously need new tires. This is perfect for someone who wants to move it and start living in it immediately or for someone who wants to restore it to its former glory. This is a very unique 2 story unit that has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. An interior washer/dryer and lots of storage. It retains much of its vintage charm including original pink stove. Park is closing in January so trailer must be sold and moved.

Vintage Mobile Home - Stewart Bi-Level Model - Kitchen

This bi-level mobile home is a beauty!

It is a near perfect combination of originality and modern living conveniences. It’s condition is outstanding too! This was a wonderful find and a real gift for the lucky buyer! Man, I wish I lived in California!

Vintage Mobile Home - Stewart Bi-Level Model - Kitchen 2

As you can see above, the stove is awesome. That’s the only word I can come up with, just awesome!

Vintage Mobile Home - Stewart Bi-Level Model dining area

It’s obvious this home has been well-cared for and appreciated. The owners kept its original vintage charm intact and only updated the bare necessities.

American Ingenuity

Bi-level mobile homes are a unique example of American ingenuity.

Mobile homes couldn’t extend beyond the 8-10 foot wide highways but they were able to increase a home’s square footage by going vertical. It was a wonderfully designed solution to a complex problem!

Vintage Mobile Home - Stewart Bi-Level Model (stairs)

By stacking the bedrooms, the designers were able to offer a full-size home that was mobile. The extended height on the end of the Bi-level mobile homes allowed private sleeping quarters and plenty of storage while only losing a few inches of headroom in both the upstairs and downstairs bedrooms. The design still makes perfect sense after all these years!

Vintage Mobile Home - Stewart Bi-Level Model (bedroom

A full-size bathroom completes the mobile home floor plan.

Vintage Mobile Home - Stewart Bi-Level Model (bathroom)

These Bi-level mobile homes used outstanding design ideas to offer buyers a complete home that was easily transportable. Their sturdy construction plays a big factor in their longevity – quality materials and smart construction techniques, as stated in the Stewart advertisements below, created a long-lasting home that has stood the test of time with the right owners caring for it.

Stewart's 2 Story Mobile Home

Stewart wasn’t the only manufacturer to offer 2-story mobile home designs. The Pacemaker was another popular builder. They used the same designs – the bedrooms were stacked together to create the 2-story aspect of the design. Here’s one of their ads:

Revamp and Refresh: Advice For Modernizing An Older Mobile Home

Comments 27.

When I was a kid, I lived in a 1984 Conway split-level mobile home. It was 4 bedrooms & 2 baths and featured a ton of built-ins in the front two split-level bedrooms. While the bedroom that me and my little brother shared, the bottom of the split-level, didn’t have any floor space to play with cars or whatever, it had two full size built in beds, a 4 drawer built-in chest, & two small closets. While the upstairs bedroom featured a queen size built-in bed platform, a couple of closets, built-in TV stand & drawers. I wish I could find a picture of that mobile home, or one similar. Specifically, would love to have a picture of the floor plan for the home. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a pink and white Stewart for sale at Flytecamp. It is featured on their intro. They are restorers of vintage trailers and build their own brand. We are fans of the vintage models because they were built to last.

I’m a fan of Flytecamp. The Holiday House they recently restored is gorgeous!

I would love to see it !!!

I also saw the show by chance on flytecamp with this Stewart trailer. My Dad was the first owner in 1956 we lived in Clarksville, PA. I have pictures of my family inside and outside of this trailer it was a hoot to see on tv. I live in the state of WA now. What memories of that time.

Does anyone have pictures of 1962 Liberty with front kitchen, cute dining room with corner cupboards, and rear bedroom with many windows? Any for sale. 55′ x 10′ Brown and white exterior. Early American drapes and furniture in original model. Was in Mobile Home Gardens, Portsmouth VA in 1963 to 65. What happened to Mobile Home Gardens?

Hi Kathryn,

I don’t have any off the top of my head but we may find one in the future. Most mobile home parks have been sold and the land used for apartments or shopping malls. Sorry!

Wow!! I have never seen or even heard of two-story mobile homes before! But after seeing these photos I think they are awesome and it would be so cool to have one of these. Thanks so much for posting this and for all of your other great articles! I live in a 1994 doublewide that we paid cash for and have been trying to renovate for the past 5 years, and seeing what amazing things people have done with other mobile homes really inspires me! Hopefully one day my home will be nice enough to feature on your blog!

This Stewart Gardner bi-level was purchased by my wife for restoration. It’s new home is at Lakeland Park on Lake Elsinore. Restoration in early 2017

Awesome! I’d love to see and share it after it’s restored! Best of luck!

I seen a pink and white by-level when I was growing up and I have always wanted one. The one I seen ended up burning but, I remember it being a 1969. It was a 3 bedroom and I can still see it in my mind. I would love to find one and buy it. But, It’s only a dream for me.

I have the same kind of dream for a Spartan trailer! I’ve just always had a thing for aluminum! Great to hear from you!

I recently purchased a 1966 Stewert bi-level that looks much like the one in the article. I am wondering if anyone knows if the ceiling tiles are asbestos tiles. I am going to have samples sent for testing but wondered if anyone else knew.

I do not know personally but hopefully someone can answer you!

I’d love to see what you do with it!

Test your floors also if you are concerned.

Here’s something I ran across on the Tiny House Talk site: a 1954 8’x40′ two-story travel trailer for sale (hey, they call it a travel trailer–it’s actually a vintage mobile home). This might be another good feature article for the vintage section.

http://tinyhousetalk.com/1954-two-story-vintage-travel-trailer-sale/

Thanks so much!

And a fan in New York too.

So much better designed than current tiny houses with their lofts and ladders. What a treat. That oven is a flat out scream. Kudos to the owner for keeping it original.

Great job as usual Crystal.

You do such a great job on this site!! Please keep up the good work and keep those fantastic vintage articles coming. You have a dedicated fan in Salt Lake City.

Thank you so much! It’s great to hear from you! I do love vintage mobile homes more than I should…lol

Crystal has another fan in Atlanta, too! :) Thanks, Crystal!

Thanks so much Randy! Great to have you!

Great article on the “tri-level” and “bi-level”…I’ve actually never seen one…only in ads. I’ll keep looking…they must be very rare. Thanks for keeping us inspired to do more with less!

Hi, Crystal. This was a great article about a great home. I enjoy following your site on Facebook. Keep up the great work. Theresa Glover

How Much Do Travel Trailers Weigh? (Camper Weight Chart)

If you’re planning on towing a travel trailer, you’ll want to know how much weight you can expect to be hauling. This information isn’t strictly for bragging rights—you need to be sure that your truck or SUV will be able to handle the load.

So, how much do travel trailers weigh, exactly? Don’t worry if you’ve never given the matter any thought before.

There are a few basic rules of thumb that will make it easier for you to calculate the weight of your travel trailer , whether it’s a new purchase or an older model that’s coming out of long retirement.

Table of Contents

How Much Do Average Travel Trailers Weigh?

The average weight of most recreational travel trailers is about 5,000 pound s, depending on size . What you’ll want to remember about this equation is that this number refers only to the “dry weight” of the unit.

This means that the weight is measured when the tanks are empty and the unit contains no gear or other incidentals.

If you have a background in construction, this measurement is similar to what’s commonly known as the “dead load” —an immutable base number that doesn’t include goods or inhabitants.

Once the fuel and water tanks are full and the unit is loaded with camping gear (thereby adding the “cargo weight”), you can expect the number to increase.

In general, the camper will weigh about 250 pounds per foot of trailer length, although it can vary depending on the size of the camper and the type of gear you pack. This total is known as the gross trailer weight , or GTW for short.

To make this concept easier to grasp, here’s a guide that uses some of the most popular trailer lengths as examples. Note that the measurements refer to the total box length of the camper, not counting the trailer hitch.

Basic Gear Weight

Most trailers come equipped with 48-gallon freshwater tanks. Since water weighs in at about eight pounds per gallon, a full tank will add nearly 400 pounds to the weight of your trailer.

When making your calculations, assume that the water tank will be full at all times (even though it obviously won’t be). This will help you to err on the safe side and avoid putting too much stress on the vehicle.

Larger camper trailers can obviously accommodate more gear, but that’s no reason to go overboard. You can expect to add at least 500 pounds of gear to the GTW ( gross trailer weight ) even if you stick to the basics.

Don’t be tempted to overload the trailer just because you have more space. When it comes to camping, it’s always best to err on the lighter side.

Understanding Dry Hitch Weight

You might also come across the term “dry hitch” weight, and be surprised at how low the number is compared to the total weight of the travel trailer.

That’s because it refers to the amount of weight that’s put on the trailer ball itself—usually about 10 percent of the trailer’s dry weight.

For example, if you’re towing a 26-foot trailer, you can expect the dry hitch weight to be between 500 and 550 pounds.

Towing Capacity Breakdown

How to tell if your vehicle can handle the weight.

Since we’ve already discussed the importance of finding the (GTW) gross trailer weight versus the dry weight , you’re off to a good start.

The next step is to find your vehicle’s towing capacity or gross vehicle weight rating. Some larger trucks and SUVs might have this information listed on the VIN sticker (usually found just inside the front driver’s side door).

Here is a great tool you can use to find the specifics on your vehicle.

Note: You don’t necessarily need a truck or SUV in order to haul a trailer. Some cars and crossover models are equipped with tow hitches as well.

Tip: Just follow the directions listed above to make sure the vehicle can handle the weight of your camper before you head out.

Here is a video for further help with finding the vehicle’s weight ratings.

Other Considerations

Here are a few other things to keep in mind when it comes to towing a travel trailer:

  • You should keep in mind that you should never exceed whatever is the lowest-rated component of your towing setup. This will be the weakest link and can cause issues.
  • If possible, invest in a truck with a diesel engine if you’re planning on towing a heavy camper often. Since these engines are built for towing, you’ll get much better mileage, but this only makes sense depending on travel trailer weight.
  • Learn to spot the difference between wooden and aluminum frames. Wooden ones are distinguished by thick stripes on the exterior of the camper and add a significant amount of weight. Campers with aluminum frames will feature a smooth exterior and sleek design.
  • If you can’t locate any information about your camper’s dry weight, take it to a roadside scale to get a reading. It’s imperative to keep the total weight below the vehicle’s maximum towing capacity or gross vehicle weight rating; otherwise, you could risk damaging the transmission.

Best of luck, and happy camping!

Caravan review: Regent Cruiser RCC220

Peter Quilty takes the latest Cruiser model out to see an increase of quality builds and feature inclusions stacks up

The last fully Australian-made Regent caravan rolled off its Somerton production line early this year, with the caravan-building enterprise now based overseas. Given the associated economies of scale benefits, the brand has had the opportunity to make great gains in terms of quality of build and finish.

I say this with confidence and sincerity after reviewing the Regent 22ft Cruiser RC220 — a superbly presented twin-axle semi-offroad van with tick-the-boxes technology, intelligent interior design, and a robust exterior with plenty of aesthetic appeal.

The Cruiser enters Australia much as you see it — including chassis, walls, floor, roof, furniture, and cupboard doors, but the suspension, water tanks, hatches, awning, and air-conditioner are installed in Melbourne. Plumbing and electrical fittings are ‘roughed in’ during the build, but fitted at Regent HQ to meet Australian standards.

Regent RV’s dealer liaison and after-sales service officer Nicole Jorgensen says the Chinese-owned company has a seamless advantage.

“Having the same owner, we’re strongly aligned with Snowy River Caravans,” she said. “We’re intent on getting things right from the start with pride and diligence in our workmanship. We also have total autonomy, thus control of our own destiny.”

The Regent Cruiser set up and looking great

Around the Outside

When I critically examine a van externally, there are certain things that immediately catch my eye. In the case of this Regent, there are many!

Obviously, the show stealer is the van’s flashy composite construction, with a fibreglass inner and outer shell. The front and rear are fully moulded.

What lies beneath is a fully-boxed aluminium frame (floor, walls, and roof) and high-density XPS insulating foam.

Subsequently there’s no timber — it’s more water resistant, given there’s nothing that can rot. The van is well-insulated from temperature extremes.

I’m also impressed with the Cruiser’s aerodynamic exterior, which provides improved fuel efficiency and a safer towing experience.

There’s abundant stowage with a front boot and full-width tunnel boot, while Raptor coating and a front window offer protection. The two 9kg gas cylinders are also well-protected.

Other external features are new technology including a 270-degree wireless reversing camera system, which can transmit four different camera views to the tow vehicle’s dashboard; a 170W solar flat panel which is more robust and flexible; a 17ft Carefree Altitude awning; quad-lock entry door; 12V LED entry step; LED grab handle; fold-down picnic table with LED lighting; massive Fusion outdoor speaker; exterior shower; a recessed spare wheel, which saves on overhang; fully adjustable rear bumper; and two 95L water tanks. This Regent also comes with a Fogatti instantaneous hot water service — no tank and no waiting time!

An electrical setup including a 1x200Ah lithium battery and Projecta PM300 battery management system will give you peace of mind when you head off-grid.

The Regent Cruiser under tow

At 2899kg tare and 3500kg ATM, it’s a ‘lump’ of a van, so you’ll need a reliable 4WD at the helm. But that gives you a healthy 601kg of payload, allowing you to take away all but the kitchen sink during your travels.

We towed the Cruiser RCC220 with an Isuzu D-Max 4X4 around the picturesque Mornington Peninsula hamlets of Flinders and Shoreham. It tracked smooth as silk on its Raptor-coated 4in DuraGal chassis, AL-KO torsion suspension and 235/75 R15 tyres, while the Lippert sway command kept it ‘as straight as a die.’ Regent states, “it tows like a dream on wheels” — and it's true.

Stepping Inside

Internally, the Regent Cruiser oozes panache and pizzazz via modern design and contemporary styling. But it’s like that old Demtel ad where you get the free ‘steak knife’ — “wait, there’s more!” Once you walk inside, it immediately reveals improved utilisation of internal space and storage.

The pièce de resistance is a combination of the central slide-out queen-size bed (east-west), club lounge and full kitchen (up front), and full-width ensuite (rear) with a washing machine.

The bed, with a 1880x1530mm innerspring mattress, is operated by a slide-out mechanism. Directly opposite is a Smart TV and wardrobes, which demonstrate clever use of storage space.

Meanwhile, the massive club lounge simply invites entertaining, relaxation, and stylish open-plan dining, while the galley has all the necessary mod cons to cook up a storm — including a Dometic fan-forced oven, Dometic RUA6408X 188L fridge, and NCE 23L microwave. The postform benchtops are real eye candy.

Stylish interior

The bathroom also features a separate fully moulded shower with shampoo shelf and footrest, and a ceramic cassette toilet.

I’m also sold on the large flat, double-glazed windows included in the bedroom, kitchen and living room, which provide panoramic vistas while the blockouts and screens provide privacy and shade. The Cruiser is also well lit with LED downlights and strip lighting (overhead/floor).

Additionally, the matte black accents offer panache and perfectly complement the caravan’s leather upholstery.

In terms of structural and manufacturer’s warranty, Regent RV offers a five-year structural warranty and a two-year material and parts warranty.

This covers Regent-manufactured components; Regent-manufactured galvanised, painted, Raptor coat chassis (excluding adjustments and rubber); Regent manufactured walls and roofs; delamination and cracking; and AL-KO torsion suspension (excluding adjustments).

However, the following items are not covered under Regent’s warranty policy: water damage or ingress from floods or river crossings; impact or stone damage to body; wheel alignment if affected by large impacts; offroad use, roads or tracks described as not being suitable; failures, defects and/or damage resulting from unauthorised modifications.

Regent RV also advises that its range has not been specifically designed for offroad use. (It manufactures its own chassis, floors, roofs and walls which provide strength, durability for gravel roads and mild offroad conditions.)

The company adds, due to gas regulations, its RVs cannot claim to be water and dust proof. Therefore, Regent caravans should not be exposed to water crossings at floor level or above. Towing at an appropriate speed in accordance with the road and weather conditions is advised.

Finally, Regent caravans have not been designed for extreme offroad use such as undulating 4WD tracks. Subsequent damage that occurs from unreasonable use is not covered by warranty.

The Bottom Line

The Regent Cruiser RCC220 is a nicely appointed semi-offroader that is purpose-built for Australia’s harsh climate.

It comprises a robust combination of aluminium frame, high-density XPS insulating foam, and a fibreglass finish, while in celebrating its 30th year Regent RV has made significant inroads in terms of design and technological flair.

The average weight of most recreational travel trailers is about 5,000 pound s, depending on size. What you'll want to remember about this equation is that this number refers only to the "dry weight" of the unit. This means that the weight is measured when the tanks are empty and the unit contains no gear or other incidentals.
