15 Best Things to Do in San Gil (Colombia)

This is the adventure sports capital of Colombia, so expect to meet a lot of thrill-seeking travelers in the otherwise quiet town of San Gil. A pretty spot in the Department of Santander, the city is close to green mountains, rivers, trails, and the Chicamocha Canyon.

It’s known throughout the country as the place to try adrenaline-inducing activities at good prices, and there are plenty of tour companies and hostels who can hook you up with mountain biking, parasailing, bungee jumping, and canyoning trips.

When you need a breather, there are quite a few places to relax, from town parks and plazas to waterfalls and natural pools. And for a little culture, you can always visit the nearby colonial towns of Barichara and Guane or play some tejo with the locals.

Let’s explore the best things to do in San Gil :

1. Cascada de Juan Curi

Cascada De Juan Curi

The best waterfall around San Gil, it’s a 180-meter high beauty where you can bathe in the cool natural pool at the bottom.

Lots of people come to Cascada de Juan Curi with a tour guide to rappel down its rock walls, but you can visit via the public bus to Charala on your own.

Hike along the trail from Juan Curi Parque Ecologico for 15 to 20 minutes in order to reach the falls which are surrounded by dense, jungle-like vegetation.

The park itself has a restaurant and toilets, so you could easily pass a whole afternoon here swimming and sunbathing.

2. Mountain Biking Tours

Chicamocha Canyon

With tons of lush mountains on its doorstep and an abundance of trails, what better way to see the area around San Gil than mountain biking? The most popular tours are run by Colombia Bike Junkies and include dual suspension bikes, safety gear, great guides, as well as meals and snacks for this all-day affair.

Venture out to see the Chicamocha Canyon and the colonial town of Jordán, stopping for a swim to cool off.

Or visit the Suarez Canyon with a tour of Barichara and lunch in the village of Galán.

A bike tour is a great way to explore the scenery and culture while getting some exercise and regular jolts of adrenaline.

3. Casa de Mercado San Gil

When you’re not busy eating American comfort food and burgers with the rest of the backpackers, be sure to check out the market in San Gil for a taste of authentic local Colombian food.

Head to the busy Casa de Mercado to pick up some quick and cheap meals known as comida corriente.

Stalls serve things like tamales, arepas, fruit juices, smoothies, soups, and sausages.

The covered market also sells fresh produce, meats, and grains, and it’s a great opportunity to stroll around with your camera and capture the colorful scenes.

Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays are the best market days – it’s the perfect place to grab breakfast!

4. Parque Gallineral

Parque Gallineral San Gil

A large ethereal-feeling park within the town of San Gil, head here to take a stroll down its pathways and bridges along the Río Fonce and Quebrada Curití.

It’s a breath of fresh air only ten minutes’ walk from the main plaza, and you can spend a few hours hiking the 4-hectare reserve or just reading beside the rivers.

The vegetation and wildlife are interesting, with over 1,000 trees covered in Spanish moss, tropical flowers, and critters like red squirrels and parrots.

There’s a pool for swimming (for an extra fee) and a couple of restaurants where you can relax with a coffee or beer.

5. Go Bungee Jumping

Bungee Jumping

San Gil is THE place for adrenaline-producing adventure sports in Colombia, so if you’re trying to bungee jump you won’t find a better town.

It’s scary, thrilling, and amazing all at the same time, and the team at Colombia Bungee Jumping can hook you up (literally) for an outing you won’t forget.

They’ve got the gear, thorough instructors, and appropriate safety measures to help you tackle this death-defying feat.

It’s relatively cheap, and they’ll transport you out to the superstructure they’ve built 230 feet (70 meters) over the Fonce River exclusively for bungee jumping.

6. White Water Rafting

White Water Rafting

There are two rivers close to San Gil where you can arrange whitewater rafting trips.

Río Fonce is suitable for younger kids with its class II and III rapids and easy-going style.

But for the more daring, head out on the Río Suarez for some class IV and V rapids that’ll really get your heart pumping.

Trips include transport, rafts, paddles, helmets, life jackets, and all the instruction you’ll need to handle the big boy rapids.

Tours with Colombia Rafting Expeditions also throw in photos, videos, and even a riverside meal.

For something even more intense, ask about riverboarding (or hydrospeeding) solo down the Río Fonce.

7. Go Paragliding

Paragliding

Try paragliding – or parapente in Spanish – while you’re in San Gil, and you’ll discover what it’s like to soar over the rolling green mountains and the dramatic Chicamocha Canyon.

These are the best views possible of the surrounding countryside and you’ll be perfectly safe as you fly with an experienced pilot strapped to you.

There’s nothing like running off the edge of the canyon into the sky, and the scenery here is stunning.

GoPros and photographs are available, and tourists give great reviews to Parapente Chicamocha and Paravolar Colombia.

8. Visit Barichara

Barichara, Colombia

One of the most charming colonial villages in Colombia, Barichara is just a short ride from San Gil.

Take the bus to wander its cobblestone streets, white cottages, the Iglesia de Santa Bárbara, and the Parque Para Las Artes.

While you’re here, try the local speciality, hormigas culonas (roasted “big ass ants”), at the restaurant Color de Hormiga.

If you’re into hiking, walk the Camino Real, a long stone pathway created by the indigenous Guane culture to the nearby village – you’ll see the Chicamocha Canyon and surrounding farms along the way.

If you’d rather take it easy, just enjoy Barichara’s colonial architecture, lots of fabulous mountain views, and the great restaurants in town.

9. Parque La Libertad and Catedral de la Santa Cruz

Catedral de la Santa Cruz, San Gil

A busy main square in San Gil, the tree-lined Parque La Libertad is lively almost all the time.

A city center for social life and street food, you’ll find locals and tourists alike hanging out here amongst the fountains and statues.

Weekend nights are especially popular, providing a vibrant atmosphere of vendors selling beer and typical foods – try the chicken skewers.

You’ll also find the Catedral Santa Cruz, a beautiful 18th-century cathedral, at one end.

Check out the interior (or attend mass) to see its stark white walls, intricate ceilings, stained glass, and confessionals.

10. Swim in the Natural Pools

San Gil River

If you’re looking for a break from adventure sports, visit the natural pools around San Gil to cool off and relax.

Pescaderito is about a 40-minute walk (or a mototaxi ride) from where the bus drops you off in the village of Curiti.

It’s free to enter these five swimming holes where you can also camp, hike, and picnic.

Be sure to wander around and check them all out, because you’ll find hot springs here too.

Pozo Azul is a smaller natural pool just 2 kilometers away from town.

You’ll find refreshing waters that are part of the Curití River along with a waterfall in the middle of the jungle.

Despite the remote feel, there are a few little restaurants and places selling beer as well.

11. Play Tejo

Tejo Game

If you haven’t yet played Colombia’s explosive national sport, head to the tejo hall in San Gil.

This awesome game involves throwing lead weights at the gunpowder targets stuck in clay at the end of a narrow court – the loud bang means you’ve done it! You can arrange to go out for tejo nights with Sam’s VIP Hostel or Macondo Hostel if you want transportation, ready-made friends, and a little lesson on how to play.

Otherwise, you can visit the Comite Municipal de Tejo in town for a couple of beers with local Colombian players while you attempt to explode some targets!

12. Go Canyoning

Canyoning

You could just go waterfall rappelling down Cascada Juan Curi, but if that isn’t enough excitement for you, check out one of the tour companies that does full days of canyoning activities.

El Dorado International Hostel does a great canyoning tour (even if you don’t stay there) which involves climbing through caves and across boulders, rappelling down waterfalls, and jumping from cliffs into the natural pools below.

They provide the transportation, instruction, professional guides, and safety equipment, so no worries if you’ve never done it before! They’ll also take photos and videos of your awesome adventures as you abseil down steep rock faces.

13. Caving at La Cueva de la Vaca

For an extreme activity you can’t do just anywhere, head to one of the caves just outside of San Gil to explore the inside.

La Cueva de la Vaca is the best cave in the area, located on the outskirts of Curiti, a short bus ride from town.

Stop by the tour company Gua-iti Aventura Sin Limite to find a guide who’ll take you through the cave.

Not for the extremely claustrophobic, caving involves slipping through narrow passageways, wading through neck-deep water, crouching in darkness, and even ducking underwater to get through tight spots.

You’ll be rewarded with ceilings full of stalactites overhead and an experience unlike any other!

14. Hike up Cerro de la Cruz

Cerro de la Cruz, San Gil

One of the best viewpoints of San Gil, hike up to the white cross at the top of the hill that you can see from the city.

It’s an easy trek and you can reach the starting point by walking through some less touristy parts of town or taking a bus or taxi.

At night, the cross is brightly illuminated and the city sparkles beneath.

It was erected by the Jesuits in 1888. This is a laid back activity if you’re in need of some panoramic shots of town and you’ve had enough of the super exciting stuff – bring sunscreen!

15. Check Out the Village of Guane

Guane, Colombia

Arrive in pretty little Guane by walking the Camino Real from Barichara or simply catch the bus to wander a town that’s packed with history.

This pre-Columbian village was settled by the indigenous people of the same name, and now it’s home to a peaceful plaza set alongside the Iglesia de Santa Lucia.

Visit the town’s museum which contains ancient marine fossils, archeological artifacts, and even a mummy.

The well-preserved architecture makes it a magical place to stroll, and Guane is the perfect town to buy traditional handicrafts, eat handmade sweets, and sample the local liquors, sabajón and chicha.

San Gil is a pueblo in the Santander Department of Colombia with a population of less than 50,000. It was founded in 1689. So, San Gil is over 300 years old. And in 2004, San Gil was named the tourist capital of Santander.

Each year, San Gil is being discovered by more foreign tourists but it’s still off the beaten path for most tourists visiting Colombia.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack a bag and head to San Gil. While there, here’s 16 top things to do in San Gil and nearby in no particular order:

View of San Gil from Cerro de la Cruz

1. Hike up Cerro de la Cruz (Hill of the Cross)

Cerro de la Cruz is undoubtedly one of the main viewpoints in San Gil. It’s a hill with a cross monument at the top that provides a great panoramic view of the pueblo.

Also, it’s considered a religious spot with a monument dating from 1888 when a mission of the Jesuits left a wooden cross as a reminder of passage through San Gil. In 1989, the wooden cross was replaced by the current concrete cross/monument.

This is a relatively easy hike from the main plaza in San Gil. It’s only about 30 minutes.

2. White Water Rafting

One of the main adventure activities in San Gil is white water rafting. And there are three rivers nearby to enable white water rafting:

  • Rio Fonce – this is the river that runs through San Gil. It offers a 6.8 mile (11 km) rafting trip that lasts a little over an hour with class 1-3 rapids. This is the least expensive rafting option.
  • Rio Chicamocha – this is the river that runs through Chicamocha Canyon. So, it offers amazing scenery. It offers a 1.5-hour rafting trip with class 1-3 rapids. Also, longer two-day rafting trips are available.
  • Rio Suarez – this is considered by many to be the best rafting in the area. It offers a 12.4 mile (20 km( rafting trip that takes 2-3 hours with class 4-5 rapids. So, this is for more experienced rafters.

All three river options near San Gil are good rafting trips and will get your adrenaline flowing.

When I went rafting in San Gil, I used Colombia Rafting Expeditions and the staff was amazing. And I recommend rafting in San Gil to any adventure tourist.

When you go rafting, it’s recommended that you wear a bathing suit or shorts, a shirt, water sandals with a strap (not flip-flops), mosquito repellant and sun screen. You could also wear tennis shoes but they will be soaked.

Your flight time at Curiti will be about 10-12 minutes. And total duration for paragliding at Curiti including roundtrip from San Gil is about three hours.

The other paragliding option in Chicamocha Canyon. Departures from San Gil leave in the morning between 8:30 and 10:00 am. And the cost is 180,000 pesos.

Chicamocha Canyon is the second largest canyon on Earth. So, the views are fantastic for this paragliding tour. And your flight time at Chicamocha Canyon is longer at 20-30 minutes.

A Chicamocha Canyon paragliding adventure will take up about five hours including roundtrip from San Gil. So, it will chew up most of a day.

Curiti is located only a 30-minute bus ride from San Gil. You don’t need to arrange a tour from San Gil. You can go to Curiti by bus and Gua-iti Aventura is the tour company in Curiti that offers 2-hour cave tours of the Cow Cave ( Cueva de Vaca ).

The Cow Cave is reportedly the best cave in the areas around San Gil. This cave has many stalactites and stalagmites and some tight spots. If you’re claustrophobic, can’t swim or are not willing to get dirty, this probably isn’t the adventure for you.

Also, there is a dreaded portion of this cave tour where you have to swim through a hole with a rope to guide you to get to the next room.

The highlight of this tour is the final room with large stalactites hanging from the roof of the cave like chandeliers and a small waterfall in the center of the room.

Note that some guides from Gua-iti Aventura don’t speak English. So, if you don’t speak much Spanish wait for a bilingual guide.

Pozo Azul

9. Go Swimming at Pozo Azul

Pozo Azul is a nice swimming location that is located only about 2 km from San Gil on the road to Bucaramanga. You could take a quick taxi for about 8,000 pesos. Or it’s walkable – only about a 20-30-minute walk from San Gil.

Poza Azul is refreshing natural pool with some very small waterfalls. The water is very refreshing and there is lots of shade nearby. Also, there is a small café selling drinks and snacks and a few larger restaurants at the top of the road.

Entrance to Poza Azul is free. And this is a good place to spend a few hours swimming and relaxing. Also, there are a number of birds in the area. So, you can also do some birding.

Another natural pool near San Gil is Pescaderito, which is located on the road to Curiti.

Everything is fresh, the burgers are greasy and very tasty. Also, they have good cheese fries and milkshakes. In addition, they have breakfast with excellent French toast and breakfast burritos. And you can see Gringo Mike’s menu online .

It’s a beautiful Colonial town where you and walk down cobblestone streets, see the beautiful natural surroundings and try out local restaurants.

Barichara’s cobblestone streets are a major part of the pueblo’s appeal. You could easily spend a few hours wandering the photogenic streets with many cafés, local restaurants and craft shops.

The main church in Barichara is Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción. It’s a sandstone church that is particularly beautiful at sunset when the stone becomes a rich orange.

In addition, the old walkway known as Camino Real from Barichara to the nearby village of Guane has some beautiful scenery. It’s a historical stone walkway that is about a 2-hour hike and one of the best things to do in Barichara. And from Guane you can catch a bus back to San Gil.

12. Try Hormigas Culonas (Ants)

Hormigas Culonas are considered a delicacy in the Santander region of Colombia. Hormigas Culonas translated literally means “big bottom ants”.

They ants are roasted with salt and you eat the backside of the ants, not the heads. And they taste kind of like popcorn.

Also, if you happen to go during the dry season, keep in mind the ants aren’t the freshest. The ants are harvested during the rainy season.

13. Visit Cascadas de Juan Curí

The Juan Curí Waterfalls are located in the Cascadas de Juan Curí Ecological Park. This is a sizable waterfall that is 656 feet (200 meters) high.

To get to Cascadas de Juan Curi go to the bus terminal in San Gil and take a bus to Charalá and ask the driver to be dropped off at Los Cascadas. It’s located about 40 minutes away and costs about 5,000 pesos by bus.

There are two entrances on the right side of the road. And the second one (with a blue and yellow sign) has a more scenic walk along the river and you’ll get to see more waterfalls. The entrance fee when I went was 7,000 pesos.

At the main waterfall you can swim at the bottom. Also, waterfall rappelling is done at the waterfall, which is known as torrentismo in Spanish.

The rappelling cost is 75,000 pesos. But waterfall rappelling is a very adventurous activity. It isn’t for everyone, as it requires some courage, a decent level of fitness and some upper body strength.

Only 1.2 miles (2 km) from San Gil on the road to Charalá, there is a structure built exclusively for the practice of bungee jumping with 229 feet (70 meters) of free fall over water in the middle of the Fonce River.

The cost for a jump is 70,000 pesos. And a second jump is half-price. Also, San Gil Bungee Jumping has staff that speak English.

Full disclosure I didn’t go bungee jumping. However, I did sky-diving in Las Vegas once in the past. And that was enough extreme falling adventure for me.

But I did talk to some expats that did the bungee jumping in San Gil. And they said the experience was very professional and they highly recommended it.

In the entry-level class you start familiarizing yourself with the kayak and all equipment. Also, you will learn proper strokes, capsize training, rescue procedures and the art of the roll. And it the end of the class, all students will be able to paddle confidently in kayaks.

Unfortunately I didn’t have time to do this activity when I was in San Gil. But I talked to two expats that did. And they said it was wild and the best thing they did in San Gil and something they would remember for the rest of their lives.

The Bottom Line: 16 Top Things to Do in San Gil, Colombia’s Adventure Capital

When I visited San Gil a couple years ago with a friend I only went for four days, which really wasn’t enough time considering there are so many things to do in San Gil and near this pueblo. In four days I only had time to do half of the 16 top things to do in San Gil listed in this article.

The bottom line is that San Gil deserves its reputation as the “Adventure Capital of Colombia”. There is so much to do nearby that you could spend weeks there and not experience everything. So, it’s definitely worth adding San Gil to your list of places to visit in Colombia.

Bungee Extremo in San gil is 140 Meters. Twice as high as the one you listed here. Its not for the faint of heart, but as the highest in south america, if you are going to jump you might as well jump there!!!!

' data-src=

Wow, San Gil looks like an amazing place that I need to visit. When is the best time to go?

' data-src=

Hi Tom, December through March are the driest months in San Gil so they are good months to go. And October is normally the rainiest month so not a very good month to go.

' data-src=

Thanks for the great post. I have been planning a trip to Bucaramanga to check it out and after reading this article I plan to go to San Gil as well.

Paragliding over Chicamocha Canyon San Gil Colombia

11 amazing things to do in San Gil: a guide to Colombia’s adventure capital

Nestled between verdant mountains and cut by the Fonce, Suarez, and Chicamocha Rivers, San Gil ( sahn-híll ) is a small, picturesque town in the Santander Department of Colombia, a day’s travel from the bustle of Bogotá or Medellín . Although its quiet streets, filled mostly with locals, would never suggest it— San Gil is Colombia’s undisputed adventure capital, considered the place to head for extreme sports and high-adrenaline pursuits.

From bungy jumping and paragliding to ziplining and white water rafting, there are a mind-boggling number of crazy (and very budget-friendly!) activities to try in San Gil, so many that you might find yourself staying far longer than planned. Between these wild adventures and the unassuming beauty of San Gil, there is truly never a dull moment. Here are 11 of the absolute best things to do in San Gil, plus detailed instruction on getting to San Gil , my picks for where to stay, and useful tips for travelling around Colombia.

What's in this travel guide

Girl ziplining over green canyon San Gil Colombia

1 | Zipline bike

Among the many adventure activities on offer in San Gil, ziplining ( cable vuelo ) is one of the quicker and cheaper options, easily fitting into a spare hour and costing no more than 30,000COP ($12AUD) for two 300m runs across the valley.

Of all the ziplining I’ve done, I can’t say that San Gil’s is the most extreme (although the view over town and the surrounding mountains is absolutely stunning)— but the bicycle handles (and working brakes) that you use for the zipline definitely qualify as the most unique!

The zipline bike at Peñon Guane is just 4km out of San Gil , off the side of the road that leads to nearby Barichara ( #10 on this list ) and right next to the giant swing ( #7 ), the highest bungy jump in South America ( #2 ), and a crazy human slingshot. Take a mototaxi from the centre of town up to this adventure complex for a few thousand COP, or you can even walk the 4km if you’re keen on a little exercise (it’s all uphill, but not unmanageably steep).

2 | Bungy jumping

I am absolutely terrified of falling (I don’t even like the diving board at a pool), so I always thought bungy jumping was off the table for me. After taking the plunge at the world’s first bungy in New Zealand a few years ago, though, I quickly realised what all the fuss is about. It is a terrifying and COMPLETELY unnatural feeling to stand at the top of a bridge (or, in this case, a crane) and leap off — but if you can push beyond the instinct to just curl up in a tight ball and cry, the experience of bungy jumping is absolutely unlike anything else , an almost manic euphoria where every cell in your body is vibrating from the wild hit of adrenaline. Better than any drug.

If you’re looking for an intense adrenaline rush (and life-time bragging rights), there is honestly nothing better than a bungy jump. And the best news is that it will cost you practically nothing to bungy jump in San Gil , a mere 1/7th of the price I paid in New Zealand !

There are actually 2 different bungy jumping companies in San Gil, each operating from a different site:

  • Colombia Bungee Jumping offers a 70m jump from a crane over the Fonce River for just 70,000COP ($27AUD), which includes professional photos of the jump (for 20,000COP extra, you can also jump with a GoPro for more photos/video, although I think the included photos are more than enough). It’s super easy to walk here from the centre of San Gil, following the Río Fonce 2.5km out of town (20min).
  • Bungee Extremo San Gil , which is in the same Peñon Guane complex as the zipline bike and giant swing mentioned in this post, actually holds the title of highest bungy jump in South America at 140m (120,000COP + 20,000COP for video). You can walk the 4km uphill to get here, but it’s also very cheap to just grab a taxi (8,000COP; $3AUD).

I did the 70m jump with Colombia Bungee Jumping and can personally attest to the professionalism and safety of the operation , but I’ve heard similarly positive things about Bungee Extremo , as well. If you want the satisfaction of doing the highest bungy jump, then obviously Extremo is for you, but if you just want to experience a bungy jump without breaking your budget, I highly recommend Colombia Bungee Jumping ! Trust me, the thrill is no less intense at 70m.

3 | Pescaderito swimming holes

Relax from all the ziplining and bungy jumping by visiting some of San Gil’s nearby swimming holes! Pescaderito, which means “little fish” in Spanish, are a series of natural (and FREE) rock pools in the green hills surrounding Curití , a charming neighbouring town which is also worth checking out.

To get to Pescaderito, head to the small bus terminal in San Gil ( Terminalito ; NOT the bus station out of town that you would have arrived at) and find the minibus marked for Curití (these leave constantly throughout the day). You will pay for your ticket on the bus, so make sure you have small change—  the trip costs just 2,900COP ($1AUD) and takes around 30min.

Once in Curití, you’ll have to grab a mototaxi for a few thousand COP or catch another bus to get out to the swimming holes. I didn’t immediately see any taxis or buses in town and it was a nice day, though, so I opted to walk, which took around 40min along the side of the road. It felt very safe and wasn’t a difficult walk, so I’d definitely recommend this as a nice way to enjoy the scenery (just make sure you have Google Maps or offline maps on your phone so you don’t get lost).

Arriving at Pescaderito, there is a large and very inviting swimming hole directly in front of you, but this is where about 95% of visitors will be hanging out— by hiking a few minutes along the rocks, you can find gradually more secluded swimming holes to enjoy . Occasionally a vendor will come around selling chips, cookies, and cold drinks, but other than this, you can pretty much get the place all to yourself!

Small Colombia town

4 | Paragliding over Chicamocha Canyon

Parque Nacional del Chicamocha is one of the best places to explore while in San Gil, the 2,000-metre-deep Chicamocha Canyon among the largest in the world . There are hikes, cycle trail, and a variety of other ways to enjoy the National Park, but perhaps none better than from the air.

Paragliding over Chicamocha Canyon is an incredibly popular activity and definitely one of the highlights from my entire time in Colombia— it’s also possible to paraglide in Curití (as well as in Medellín ), but the scenery just doesn’t compare!

There are a few different paragliding operators in San Gil that will transport you out to the canyon, take you on an incredible 30min flight , and then return you back to your hostel in town for 180,000COP ($70AUD). Usually your hostel will have a relationship with a specific company and they can help you book, but these are the main companies you can check out:

  • Parapent Chicamocha
  • Paravolar Colombia
  • Parapent San Gil

Although paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon is far and away the most expensive activity on this list, it was SO worth it and I’d highly recommend the splurge (plus, I paid more than 2x as much for paragliding in the Alps a few years ago, so it’s actually a bargain!). If you absolutely can’t justify the cost of paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon, then a shorter 10min flight in Curití at just 80,000COP ($30AUD) is still a great option.

5 | White water rafting

Thanks to the 3 rivers in and around San Gil, there are white water rafting tours here in spades , and this is one of my very favourite adventure activities! I sadly didn’t hit the river myself while in San Gil (since I just went rafting a few weeks ago in Baños, Ecuador — which is where these photos are from), but I got all the info from my hostel:

  • Río Fonce (the river in town): Best for beginners, those short on time, or budget travellers; 11km run on Class 1-3 rapids; allow 2-2.5hrs for tour; 35,000COP ($14AUD)
  • Río Suarez : Best for adventurous or confident rafters; 20km run on Class 4-5 rapids; allow 5hrs for tour; 130,000COP ($52AUD)
  • Río Chicamocha (the river in the Chicamocha Canyon): Best in terms of scenery or for multi-day trips; Class 1-4 rapids; allow 5-7hrs for tour; 200,000COP ($80AUD)

The hostel owner I spoke to highly recommended going with Colombia Rafting Expediciones over any other operator in San Gil, as they have the best track record in terms of safety, high-quality gear, and English-speaking guides . They are a few dollars more than other competitors, but the mountain of positive TripAdvisor reviews should be enough to convince you that it’s worth it.

6 | Casa de Mercado

One of my absolute favourite ways to discover a new city is by escaping the tourist restaurants and instead exploring the local markets , mingling with residents as they shop for fresh produce and meat, or even sit down for an inexpensive meal at one of the little stalls.

At San Gil’s Casa de Mercado, located just a block off the main square and Parque la Libertad ( #11 on this list ), you can stock up on heaps of traditional favourites, like arepas, tamales, fresh juice, and probably the largest avocados you’ve ever seen in your life (just imagine the guacamole you could make). If you want to save money on breakfast and get acquainted with some of the San Gil locals, this is a fantastic spot to check out!

Unlike markets in other parts of Colombia that can be slightly sketchy or located in somewhat shifty parts of town, Casa de Mercado is completely safe (as is all of San Gil, really) , so you should have zero issues exploring with your camera as long as you are courteous.

7 | Giant swing

Situated in the same adventure complex as the awesome zipline bike ( #1 on this list ), Peñon Guane also houses a giant swing that will have you soaring high over the hills of San Gil.

After clipping your harness and tightly securing you to the swing, the staff crank you all the way up to a 9-o’clock position before releasing you into a free-fall and wide pendulum swing. It’s incredibly fun and surprisingly thrilling!

The operators only charged us 30,00COP ($12AUD) for the zipline and then strapped us into the swing at no additional cost , so I can’t 100% confirm what the individual price for just a ride on the swing would be— given the reasonable price of all other activities in the complex, however, it’s a safe bet that it will fit nicely within your budget.

View over San Gil Colombia

8 | Torrentismo

Another of San Gil’s most popular activities is torrentismo , or abseiling down enormous waterfalls using little more than a rope. The best place to try your hand at torrentismo is the beautiful Juan Curí Waterfalls located about 40min outside of town near Charalá, which is also a great day trip from San Gil in its own right.

Even if you don’t want to do the torrentismo, there’s still plenty to enjoy in Parque Ecológico Cascadas de Juan Curi , including scenic walking trails, a series of other smaller falls, and beautifully secluded swimming spots (if you don’t mind a chill).

To get to las cascadas , head to the same small bus terminal in town described previously ( Terminalito ) and catch a Cotrasangil bus towards Charalá for 6,000COP . Ask the driver to drop you off at Juan Curi, pay the entrance fee of 9,000COP, and then walk along the river towards the falls. There are usually some operators around that will gear you up and let you rappel down the face of the waterfall for around 70,000COP ($28AUD) , just be prepared to get your heart rate up.

Abseiling down waterfall torrentismo

9 | Gringo Mike’s

Even though I wouldn’t ordinarily recommend a Western restaurant in Latin America (let alone as its own entry on a ‘best of’ list), Gringo Mike’s is honestly just that good.

If you find yourself craving some flavourful American or Tex-Mex favourites while in San Gil, this awesome spot in town owned by a Seattle expat (which is why I checked it out in the first place, as a fellow Seattle expat!) has truly delicious burgers, burritos, frozen margaritas, milkshakes, and even a giant hot cookie served with ice cream . I’m salivating as I type this.

I ended up eating here 3 times while in San Gil, due in part to the fact that I’d been developing real cravings for a burger over the last few months in South America and also because I was just coming off the back of a very graphic empanada food poisoning incident in Bogotá that left me slightly distrustful of street food.

Gringo Mike’s is a bit pricier than eating at a local restaurant (and you should definitely check these out, because I really enjoyed the food in San Gil after I recovered), but it’s still inexpensive by home standards and SO worth it to treat yourself. To give you an idea, burgers and the giant cookie (!!!) are around 15,000COP each ($5.50AUD) and beer is 4,500COP ($1.80AUD).

Cookie with ice cream

10 | Barichara

Considered by many to be the most beautiful pueblo in all of Colombia, Barichara is one of the best and easiest day trips from San Gil. This picturesque town features charming cobbled streets lined by colourful flowers, all against the backdrop of lush green mountains — it would be a day well spent even if all you did was wander through town and admire the scenery.

If you want to explore beyond the cobbled lanes, El Camino Real is a popular 10km walking trail from Barichara to the neighbouring town of Guane , offering spectacular views of the Chicamocha Canyon and the chance to experience Colombia very much off the “Gringo Trail”.

To get to Barichara, walk about 2km to the main bus station just outside of town (NOT Terminalito ) and purchase a ticket for around 4,800COP with Cotrasangil . These buses depart every 20min from 6am to 8.30pm, so you can just rock up and catch whatever bus is leaving next!

Colonial architecture in Barichara, Colombia

11 | Parque La Libertad

San Gil itself is actually completely charming , so between all the day trips to nearby towns and excursions into national parks, make sure to set aside some time to wander around its streets.

One of the best spots to check out (and you really can’t miss it), is Parque La Libertad, the leafy central plaza right near the Casa de Mercado ( #6 on this list ). You’ll often see locals congregating under the trees or sitting on the benches, excitedly chattering with their neighbours as street food vendors and local shops bustle around the perimeter.

This park is the lifeblood of little San Gil, and although it doesn’t have the chaos of a typical Plaza de Armas , Parque La Libertad is still one of the best places to hang out if you want to see Colombia through the eyes of its people.

Parque La Libertad

*Practical information

Getting from bogotá to san gil.

The easiest way to get to San Gil is via direct bus from Bogotá , Colombia’s bustling capital , which costs 40,000COP ($15AUD) and takes 8-9hrs.

It’s also possible to fly from Bogotá to Bucaramanga (300,000COP; 1hr) , taxi to the bus station (30,000COP; 30min), and then take a bus from Bucaramanga to San Gil (12,000COP; 3hrs) — but as you can see, it’s not a whole lot quicker and it’s certainly A LOT more expensive than just opting for the bus the whole way.

For super detailed step-by-step instructions on taking the bus or flying from Bogotá to San Gil , check out this post: HOW TO GET FROM BOGOTÁ TO SAN GIL: COLOMBIA TRANSPORT GUIDE

Getting from Medellín to San Gil

You can also reach San Gil from Medellín , although it’s not quite as straightforward as the journey from Bogotá. Either take a bus (60,000COP; 8-10hrs) or fly (250,000COP; 1hr) from Medellín to Bucaramanga and then catch a bus to San Gil (12,000COP; 3hrs). Flying can save you several hours, but it’s not entirely painless, since you still have to taxi to the bus terminal in Bucaramanga (30,000COP; 25min) and catch a 3hr bus to San Gil.

Getting around San Gil

Once in San Gil, it’s incredibly easy to get around this compact city. There are taxis and mototaxis that can zip you around very inexpensively, but most everything is within walking distance , including many of the activities on this list and the small bus terminal, Terminalito (which services nearby towns, like Curití ).

Where to stay in San Gil

The most popular hostel in San Gil seems to be Sam’s VIP Hostel , which came highly recommended from a number of travellers I met in Colombia for its social vibe, central location, rooftop pool, and help planning/booking activities around San Gil. Dorm beds are 27,000COP and private rooms start at 140,000COP.

Just to be different, I opted to stay at Macondo Hostel , which ended up being absolutely wonderful and owned by an Aussie-Colombian couple . There were group dinners organised on some of the nights, heaps of activities that the staff would either book for you or help you DIY, a lovely outdoor patio with a pool, and nice rooms ( dorm beds 20,000COP and 120,000COP private rooms ).

Travel tips

  • Before heading to San Gil, pick up a local Colombian SIM card in Bogotá so you can use your phone for Google Maps and WhatsApp. There’s an absolutely enormous Claro shop within 15-20min walking distance of La Candelaria (search this in Google Maps: Claro Carrera 8 – Centro de Atención y Ventas, Cra. 8 ## 19-41, Bogotá, Cundinamarca, Colombia ). Bring your passport and your phone , and the staff can get you completely set up (just know that they likely won’t speak a single word of English). Including the SIM itself, you can get 2GB of data to use within 15 days for 20,000COP ($7.50AUD) , and then subsequent top-ups can be done at basically any convenience or telecommunications shop around the country, including in San Gil.
  • Even though it’s sketchy to flag taxis directly off the street in larger Colombian cities like Bogotá, it’s perfectly safe to do so in San Gil . If you’re feeling nervous, though, you can always ask your hostel to call a taxi for you (there’s no Uber here).
  • As with most everywhere in South America,  there is a very real language barrier in San Gil and I really wouldn’t recommend travelling here without learning some basic Spanish phrases . Most tour guides will speak a bit of English, but waiters, cashiers, taxi drivers, bus station employees, and just general people on the street typically won’t speak a word.
  • The Davivienda ATM just off Parque La Libertad (Search: Crr.10#11-14., San Gil, Santander, Colombia ) will let you pull out quite a few pesos (I think the limit per transaction was 700,000COP, which is $265AUD) and also doesn’t charge a fee (although your bank will probably charge something), so this was my preferred place to go for cash in San Gil.

Exploring San Gil Where to stay Where to eat How to get around

Without a doubt, San Gil is the adventure capital of Colombia. If you’re looking to get the heart pumping and the adrenaline flowing, then San Gil should be on your Colombian itinerary .

San Gil is the place to start ticking off your bucket list items — paragliding, bungee jumping, white water rafting — the list goes on!

Also, check out our list of the best activities in San Gil to plan your adventures.

Is San Gil worth visiting?

Chicamocha canyon in Bucaramanga

The nature surrounding San Gil keeps the excitement going. Not far from the colonial town are glorious waterfalls, deep canyons and rapid rivers.

Within San Gil, the town offers cobblestone colonial streets and a laidback vibe that’s popular with tourists. With only around 50,000 residents, San Gil is a welcomed escape from Colombia’s bustling cities.

This makes San Gil the perfect place to return to after a busy day of adventures.

How long should you spend in San Gil?

That depends on how much adventure you want to indulge in. Or how many days you want to just spend relaxing, meandering around the town and eating good food.

Most people spend 3-4 days in San Gil. This gives you enough time to take part in a number of adventure activities, and take day trips to the surrounding area and colonial towns.

You can use our Top Things to Do in San Gil guide to plan your time in the town.

Where to stay in San Gil

Locals in front of San Gil Cathedral

Good news if you don’t like doing much research on where to stay in a place! San Gil is a small town, so there aren’t lots of neighbourhoods to stay in.

There’s only one area we’d recommend staying in:

The centre of San Gil

You can walk from one side of San Gil to the other in about 30 minutes, or a 10-minute drive. If you stay around the middle of San Gil then you’ll be within walking distance of pretty much everything in the town.

Accommodation in San Gil

Hotels in San Gil tend to be smaller, family-run or boutique hotels, mirroring the intimate vibe of San Gil itself. You’ll also be able to find plenty of hostels and Airbnbs.

Accommodation in San Gil is also very kind on the purse strings. Private rooms start from $10 per night!

Our favourite place to stay in San Gil has to be Hotel Campestre Palmas del Zamorano due to its infinity pool, jacuzzi and incredible staff.

The best restaurants in San Gil

San Gil is a pretty touristy city as visitors flock here to get their adrenaline pumping. This does mean that you’ll find more restaurants tailored towards tourists here. Think pizzas, burgers, burritos etc.

Though, if you’re in search of some local food, San Gil market is the ideal place to find a menu del dia (a set lunch menu).

To help you avoid the tourist traps, here are our 3 favourite places to eat in San Gil , a mixture of both local and international food:

Gringo Mikes — 14 different types of delicious gourmet burgers

Gringo Mikes is probably one of the most popular places to eat in San Gil. Their menu offers hearty food: burgers, Gringo (loaded) fries, sandwiches, burritos and tacos.

The delicious gourmet burgers are the star of the show. They have 14 different types of burgers but the fan favourite is the Sriracha burger. You’re guaranteed to leave this place feeling welcomed by the friendly staff and very, very full!

Cafeteria El Zaguan — fully-loaded delicious arepas

Arepas are a staple food in Colombia. They’re great for a snack or light lunch, especially for those on a budget. One fully-loaded arepa costs around 3,000 COP ($0.80)–4,000 COP ($1)!

You’ll have to plan your visit to Cafeteria El Zaguan carefully as they’re only open between 9am-1pm, but it’s certainly worth it. They pack their arepas with pretty much any topping you can imagine — avocado, egg, cheese, chorizo, potato, chicken. Don’t miss the empanadas.

Penelope Pizzería — fresh pizza in a serene setting

The ambience of Penelope Pizzeria only makes the food better. The cute interior creates an environment where you can fully enjoy the fresh and tasty pizzas.

You can pair your pizza with a personal sangria, a glass of wine or beer from Colombia’s famous brewery BBC. Penelope Pizzeria is the perfect end to an adventure-filled day!

Walking from the east side of the city to the west takes just over 30 minutes, so most places that you want to get to shouldn’t be too far away.

If you’re arriving at the bus terminal with your luggage, or just don’t fancy walking, then there are plenty of taxis available in San Gil.

You can simply flag them down in the street and hop in. Make sure to agree on a price before getting in, or check that they have a metre.

San Gil has a bus terminal right in the centre of town, Terminalito , which you can use for day trips to surrounding towns or attractions.

For example, if you want to visit the picturesque town of Barichara , then you can take a bus from this terminal.

The buses leaving from Terminalito are local buses, so tickets are nice and cheap!

  • 6.55462 -73.14914 1 Bus terminal . The bus terminal to major Colombian cities is 2 km west of the city center. A taxi between there and the town center costs COP$3,000 or take one of the frequent busetas . San Gil is on the road between Bucaramanga and Bogotá , hence there are frequent buses to towns along this axis. For other destinations, you'll most likely have to change buses in Bucaramanga.
  • Buses to Bucaramanga leave from the corner of Carrera 11 with Calle 10 on the river front (COP$23,000 - every 30 minutes, 2½ hours, 90 km, as of March 2023). You could also catch them the buses from the main terminal. If possible, try to sit on the right side for the best views of Rio Umpala. Consider stopping at the Chicamocha Canyon National Park on the way.
  • 6.556606 -73.136863 2 Terminalito ( Local Bus Station ), Corner of Carrera 10 and Calle 17 . Local buses from surrounding towns like Barichara (every 20-30 minutes between 6:15 AM and 8:30 PM, COP$6,500, 45 min, as of Mar 2023), Charalá or Curiti leave from a small terminal operated by the company CotraSangil. ( updated Mar 2023 )

  • 6.37229 -73.16518 2 Cascadas de Juan Curi , ☏ +57 3114893272 - 3168233920 - 3114716121 . Beautiful 180-meter-high waterfalls outside of town. To get there, get a bus to Charalá from the local terminal and ask to be dropped off at Las Cascadas (COP$5,000, 40 min). There are two entrance on the right handside of the road, the second one (blue and yellow sign) offers a more scenic walk along the river and you'll get to see more waterfalls (COP$7,000). It's a nice 20-minute walk to the bottom of the Juan Curi waterfall where you can swim. Your shoes will get wet crossing the water several times and there are ladders and ropes to help you climb. 100 meters before the waterfall, a small track on your right will lead you up to the middle of the waterfall. Rappelling is possible from there. During rainy weather, consider going early and/or enquire by phone on the flood risk as there may be too much water to walk up the trails to the pools.

Tour companies generally offer similar activities and are clustered around the entrance of park El Gallineral. If you plan to go rafting or kayaking on rapids of class 3 and over, check that the guides are certified by the International Rafting Federation (IRF).

  • Colombia Rafting Expeditions , Carrera 10 No.7-83 , ☏ +57 7 724 5800 - 311 283 8647 , [email protected] . Organizes all adventure activities as well as being the experts at big rapids and kayaking.
  • [formerly dead link] Planeta Azul ( At the parque El Gallineral ), ☏ +57 7-724-0000 , +57 310-771-7586 , fax : +57 7-724-7679 , [email protected] .

Mountain biking [ edit ]

  • Colombian Bike Junkies. Mountain Biking Tours , Calle 12 No 8-35 first floor , ☏ +57 316 327 6101 , [email protected] . The mountains and canyons around San Gil make this a great area for mountain biking. You can find bikes for hire in town, but for a guided tour ask at Gringo Mikes. They run full-day tours under the name Colombian Bike Junkies including new full suspension Kona bikes and protective equipment, 4WD transfers, breakfast, lunch and drinks and snacks along the way. You get to see some great scenery, and best of all it's about 95% downhill so you can let gravity do most of the work. You don't need to be a downhill guru, but should be comfortable with riding on dirt roads. COP$160,000-180,000 (depending on group size).

Rafting [ edit ]

San Gil is the pioneering place for rafting in Colombia :

  • Rio Fonce , This is the river going through San Gil, it offers an 11-km trip lasting 1hr 15min on class 2-3 rapids depending on the season. It suits all kind of public. COP$25,000.
  • Rio Chicamocha , An 1hr 30min rafting trip with rapids from level 2 to 4. More adrenaline and amazing scenery going through the canyon. Possible to organize expeditions up to 3 days long.
  • Rio Suarez . Considered the most advanced, this is a 3-hour and 20-km trip of non-stop class 4-5 rapids. Rafters must have prior experience with class 3 rapids and be under 50 years of age. Tours run in the morning and afternoon, but are dependant on the water level for any given day. COP$130,000 . ( updated Jun 2019 )

Caving [ edit ]

  • Cueva de Vaca ( Cow Cave ) ( Take a bus from the local transport center to Curití COP$3000 ). Named for cows that would become trapped after falling into the entrance, Cueva de Vaca is purportedly the more adventurous of the caving options in the region. The cave contains bats, bugs, and the usual stalactite and stalagmite formations, as well as a creek that flows through its entirety. During high water, it's necessary to swim submerged using a rope as a guide to access the deeper chambers. Most tours will spend 1–1.5 hr inside the cave before returning to the entrance (an exit has yet to be discovered). It's possible to purchase tickets directly from one of several companies in Curití, or through a tour operator or hotel in San Gil. COP$40,000 . ( updated Jun 2019 )
  • Cueva Del Indio ( Indian Cave ) ( From the local transport center, bus to Páramo ). Access to the cave is by rapelling down a zipline. Tours last approx 1 hr and showcase several chambers that contain bats, stalactites, stalagmites and ponds. In the last chamber, it is possible to jump five meters into a four-meter deep waterhole. COP$40,000 . ( updated Jun 2019 )

Swimming [ edit ]

There are lots of places around San Gil to go for a swim:

  • Pozo Azul  : Close to San Gil and accessible by taxi, it is popular with locals. 300 meters down river is la Milagrosa where you can jump from rocks.
  • Pescaderito  : Close to the town of Curiti, it has swimming holes and water slides. Camping possible.

Other activities are caving, parapente, paintballing, kayaking, hydrospeed and rapelling.

Trekking [ edit ]

There are numerous trekking opportunities in the countryside surrounding San Gil. The following itinerary goes through 3 colonial towns before going down in the Chicamocha canyon and up on the other side. Doing the whole trek in 2 days is possible if you leave San Gil really early on the first morning but it will probably be more enjoyable do it in 3 days and take your time checking out the towns in details. You can also do only parts as there are buses going back to San Gil in every town except Jordan. You don't need to carry food and camping equipment as there are restaurants and hotels in every town. Carry a lot of water and be careful of the midday heat.

  • Cabrera - Barichara - Get a local bus from San Gil to Cabrera (COP$4,000), it will drop you on the main plaza of the town. Here check out the church. At the upper left corner of the plaza, take the steepest street up (Calle 7) and turn left at the top. Follow the path along the stations of the cross (14 of them). From the top keep on going straight, the path is fairly flat and you'll soon see Barichara in the distance. When you get close to town, you'll encounter the local swimming pool on your right hand side (COP$1,500) right before a football/soccer field. Across the street you can see upright stones placed in regular intervals under the trees. These are either meant to secure cattle for 'servicing' or possibly used as an abattoir (slaughter) a long time ago; there are different stories when asking locals. Look out for iguanas taking the sun up on the tree branches. Quite likely you will see several flocks of vultures as well hanging around near the stone bridge. A bit further there is a stone bridge that you have to cross. After a final small climb you're in the town of Barichara. Walking time: 2½ hr.
  • Barichara - Guane - From the main square take any Calle going up the hill until you reach Carrera 10. Turn left towards the ridge. A stone marks the start of the trail, it is an old paved path that was restored 180 years ago by a German Geo Van Leguerke. The path crosses the paved road twice, just cross it. Refreshments are (sometimes) sold at the farm at midway. walking time: 2 hr.
  • Guane - Villanueva - To exit Guane, take Calle 6 from the main plaza towards the hill and soon you'll be back on the camino real. At some point there are farms on both sides of the path and right after you get to a crossing with a bigger road, taking that road to the right would bring you back to Barichara, you need to go straight (on the good road) and keep going uphill (the track is not exactly but a bit to the right). Keep on going up through the fields and tobacco farms. Soon after passing a finca named La Ceiba on the left hand-side, you get to a fork with a cross in the middle and a basketball court on the left, take a right there. Less than 5 minutes after, you encounter a needle head turn, take a left towards the house with a white flag. This is a mirador with great views of the canyon and all the ascent you've accomplished. Keep on going up. At some stage there will be two farms on the right and what looks like a road going uphill, do not turn and keep going straight, the road goes down a bit towards bare land for 5 minutes and after that is the final part of the climb. Once you reach the hilltop, you can see the next valley with Villanueva on the left but hidden by a hill. On your right is the road used by cars to reach town but it does a lot of turn. The shorter option is to take a left and look for the path going directly to town. You have to follow the barbwire, it will start dropping towards the valley and what looks more like a ditch will turn in a footpath. After a while you'll exit a field through a door and reach jeep track, take left towards the red and white antenna. From there it's straight to town. Hotel San Miguel has clean rooms for COP$35,000 (Jan 2024). Walking time: 3 hrs.

  • Villanueva - Jordan - The way from Villanueva down to Jordan takes approximately 5 hours. It is best to leave after noon so that you go down the canyon (900 m) in the late afternoon. Leave Villanueva in north-east direction and ask some locals to point you to the road towards the canyon and Jordan. You start off on some dirt roads then end up on a path that leads down the canyon. You will encounter many crossings. Best thing is to ask locals when they pass by. After you went down 900 m to the canyon you will hit a dirt road. Turn right and it's a 20-min walk to Jordan. In Jordan, La Posada del Caminante has dorms and private rooms. Privates are COP$70,000 (Jan 2024). Food can be had at the little kiosk just opposite. The river is good to cool down after a long hike. Walking time: 4-5 hr.
  • Jordan - Los Santos - The last part consists of a 900-m difference climb to get out of the canyon. Cross the bridge over the Chicamocha river. The stone path starts just after, you can't miss it. The path goes up continuously but is never too steep and getting to Los Santos should take around 2 hours. Avoid doing this in the midday heat. There´s a house selling refreshments halfway up. Los Santos is a decent size town compared to Jordan. Buses leave from the main square. To get back to San Gil, you first need to take a Piedecuesta bound bus that will drop you at on the San Gil - Bucaramanga road at a place called Los Curros (COP$5,000). Flota Cachira goes there but Transporte Mesa de Los Santos takes a different route to Piedecuesta, check with your driver to be sure. From there flag down a bus to San Gil (COP$12,000). Other option is to go to the nacional park Chicamocha and cross the canyon with the Teleferico. From there you can flag down a bus going back to San Gil. walking time: 1½-2 hr. Note that as of January 2024, the Teleferico is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Bungee jumping [ edit ]

There are two places to bungee jump, located over a river a few kilometers from town, 500 m apart. You can get there by bus for COP$1,000, taxi for about COP$5,000, or moto for about COP$3,000.

  • San Gil Bungee Jumping , ☏ +57 315 8169215 (mobile) . 55-m platform jump. If you time it right you can jump while there are whitewater rafters watching you from below! Cost is COP$35,000 for the jump, and COP$15,000 for pictures and a video (March 2016). .
  • The other one is 70-75 m high, from a crane, and it costs COP$70,000 (March 2016)

Visit San Gil travel guide: best things to do in the outdoors activities capital

San Gil is a village located in the valley between Bogotá and Bucaramanga, to put it very broadly. It’s the ideal base from which to explore part of the Santander region, since from San Gil it’s possible to radiate out in different directions to enjoy a region with an incredibly wide range of activities!

  • Visit beautiful villages such as Barichara, Socorro..
  • Go in search of sublime natural sites such as Las Gachas or the Juan Curi waterfall..
  • Enjoy adventure sports such as rafting, paragliding, canyoning, climbing..
  • Discover the Chicamocha Canyon in three ways (by air, by land, by river)

In short, San Gil and the surrounding region offer a multitude of possibilities, making it the adventure sports capital of Colombia and certainly the tourist capital of Santander!

But let’s not forget that San Gil, like all the villages in the region, has a small but attractive historic center ! Surrounding the central square and its church, a few blocks of streets offer the colonial architecture typical of the region, with the huge stone paving stones found intact in Barichara and elsewhere.

Don’t forget to climb up to the Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint to take in the town and the landscape surrounding San Gil!

As you can see, the area around San Gil has a lot to offer! And it was important to show you this before telling you what the town is really known for in Colombia: adventure tourism .

San Gil is the self-proclaimed adventure tourism capital of Colombia. A title that many other places in Colombia could steal, as there are a plethora of magical natural sites and nature activities in Colombia. But it’s true that San Gil is surely one of the pioneering villages in this field .

Rafting in San Gil

Colombia’s capital of adventure tourism.

Visit San Gil travel guide: best things to do in the outdoors activities capital

One of the activities for which San Gil is best known is rafting and its derivatives , such as kayaking and hydrospeed.

From San Gil, you can navigate 3 different rivers:

  • The Rio Fonce , which runs alongside the village and is the most tranquil and family-friendly river.
  • The Rio Chicamocha , which carved out the canyon and offers an exceptional panorama.
  • The Rio Suarez , considered by experts to be one of Colombia’s best rivers for rafting.

Depending on skill level, adrenaline craving and budget, there’s something for everyone in San Gil.

If rafting is an activity that takes your fancy, we also recommend you take a look at Medellin . There we discovered an exceptional site, the Rio Samana and its tributaries, 1h30 from Medellin, near the village of San Franciso. More info on rafting here.

Paragliding in San Gil

Colombia’s capital of outdoors activities.

Visit San Gil travel guide: best things to do in the outdoors activities capital

The other most popular activity in San Gil is paragliding ! It has to be said that there’s a nice little take-off site not too far away… the Chicamocha Canyon . It’s hard to write lines and lines about this activity, as it seems obvious to us that once you’ve said: fly over the Chicamocha Canyon, you’ve said it all! From our point of view, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so you might as well do it here… or in Medellín .

Prices for paragliding in Colombia are pretty affordable compared with those in Europe, and it would be a shame to miss out! For those on a budget, a second option is available with flights departing from Curiti. Shorter, less expensive, you won’t be flying over the Chicamocha Canyon, but you’ll still be getting laid against a backdrop of mountainous landscapes.

Trekking around San Gil

Visit San Gil travel guide: best things to do in the outdoors activities capital

We mentioned this in our post on Barichara , but the region around San Gil is home to the ancient Guane civilization. At the time, the natives built numerous communication routes, later reused by settlers, and known as the “Camino Real” . Today, these ancient communication routes are the subject of hiking trails that can be covered over one or more days.

The most adventurous Camino is certainly the one that descends from Villanueva, near Barichara, to the village of Jordan at the bottom of the Chicamocha canyon . It then climbs back up to the Mesa de los Santos.

There are many other ways to enjoy Santander’s natural wonders, and here again, if you would like to be accompanied on this activity, we recommend that you contact our partner friends in San Gil, who will be happy to guide you along the paths of Santander.

Villages to visit around san gil, santander’s tourist capital.

Visit San Gil travel guide: best things to do in the outdoors activities capital

As you can see, there’s plenty to do around San Gil, starting with the discovery of Santander’s heritage villages , many of which are clustered in the region.

One of the most beautiful villages in Colombia is Barichara ! We spent two delightful days here during our visit, and it was a real “coup de coeur “. Barichara is a village perched on a mountainside above San Gil, about 30 minutes away by bus or car.

The village’s charm lies in its totally preserved architecture, and there’s plenty to do here. We enjoyed meeting the locals, going into the workshops and learning more about local initiatives. We loved wandering through the narrow streets and discovering the many beautiful viewpoints, in short, a must-see.

To the west of San Gil lies the village of Socorro . While the town may not look much to look at from the outside, having long since grown up on its outskirts with more recent buildings, the historic center has been well preserved , retaining all its colonial charm. Socorro is one of Colombia’s heritage villages, both for its architecture and for its historical importance.

It was in Socorro that the first declaration of independence was drafted. Socorro is in some ways a rival village to San Gil, in that it is located very close to the famous Rio Suarez, and therefore offers visitors who decide to stay there the same sporting activities that can be enjoyed from San Gil.

Although the village of Guadalupe is not, strictly speaking, of immense architectural interest, it nevertheless exudes a tranquility that you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in the aforementioned villages. Here, away from it all, you’ll experience the indolent rhythm of life amidst the sumptuous Santander countryside. The welcome is warm and the activities not the least.

We really enjoyed the atmosphere of this tiny village, and particularly the walks in the surrounding countryside. Of course, our favorite is the natural site of Las Gachas and its famous waterholes . Around Guadalupe there are also numerous waterfalls to discover, which are well worth the detour.

Visit Las Gachas and the village of Guadalupe travel guide

Curiti is a bit like the capital of Fique ! This traditional Andean plant has always been used (especially by the natives) as a fiber for weaving all kinds of objects, clothes and bags. Here in Curiti, espadrilles made from Fique soles are particularly famous.

So it’s inconceivable to pass through Curiti without visiting a Fique workshop . But it’s not all about craftsmanship.

Other pretty villages can also be reached from San Gil, such as Páramo, Valle de San Jose or Pinchote … all colonial villages that have remained more or less in their original state and are therefore totally off the beaten track.

Zapatoca to the south of Bucaramanga also comes to mind, but the road to get there from San Gil is a bit complicated. Better think about adding it to your itinerary from Bucaramanga.

Waterfalls and natural sites around San Gil

San gil, santander’s tourism capital.

Visit San Gil travel guide: best things to do in the outdoors activities capital

Near the village of Guadalupe, 2 hours from San Gil, lies the natural site of Las Gachas : a riverbed that flows like a water carpet, filling dozens of perfectly round water holes. A truly unusual and unique site that we absolutely loved !

Situated in the middle of pastures, with mountain ranges on the horizon, the setting is truly bucolic to boot. The water holes vary in size and depth, but some are several meters in diameter and several meters deep! Plenty to enjoy and have fun with.

The rock is covered with a kind of algae or moss which gives it an orange color that adds to the ambience of the site , but also makes it very slippery… so here’s the fashion tip from the locals: take off your shoes, but keep your socks on so you can walk safely in the Las Gachas river!

Balneario Pescaderito

Located very close to the village of Curiti, the Pescaderito site is one of the best-known around San Gil. It’s one of the locals’ favorite places to enjoy the river with the whole family. With its various natural pools , the Pescaderito site is a pleasant place to come and splash around with the kids in the clear, tranquil waters of the Rio.

Easy to reach and populated, you can expect the site to be very busy at weekends and in high season. As you make your way upstream, several “pozos” are revealed for the more curious. More secret corners, where you can find a little more peace and quiet than in Pescaderito.

Balneario Pozo Azul

A 10-minute bus or cab ride from the center of San Gil is the Pozo Azul site. Pozo means “hole” and Azul means… “blue”. So you can imagine what it’s all about! A natural basin formed in the bed of the Rio Fonce and fed by a small waterfall. A pleasant place to take a dip in crystal-clear water.

On site, there’s a small kiosk where you can enjoy a snack or a cool beer. The place is obviously popular and can become quite crowded with locals at weekends and in high season.

Cascade Juan Curi

When it came to making a choice for our last day around San Gil, we set our sights on the Cascade Juan Curi . We’d been wanting to see this waterfall for ourselves for some time, and frankly… it’s well worth the detour . So we were lucky: when we came at the end of August, there was hardly anyone around. We were therefore able to make the most of this enchanted place , and even the instructors who were supposed to offer abseiling down the waterfall had left before we arrived, due to a lack of customers! The Juan Curi waterfall is a real postcard .

Down below, the perfectly round basin in a lush green setting, watered by this great waterfall , already sets the scene. We clearly couldn’t resist taking a dip! The water was quite cool, but it felt really good after the hour’s walk to get there.

The second waterfall above the first is not to be missed. There’s a small path that climbs to the right just before you reach it, and with a little effort you can reach the top of the first waterfall. It is from this “second floor” that the abseiling is done. Once there, we discovered another unique landscape, a small crystal-clear river and, at the bottom of the small cirque, a second, finer, but much higher waterfall! A real highlight.

At the entrance, there’s a snack bar for those who want to spend the day there.

10-day Road trip in Colombia: our itinerary from Bogota to Santa Marta by car

It needs no introduction, does it? Chicamocha Canyon is one of Colombia’s best-known and most impressive natural sites. It is the second largest canyon in the world, and the last largest canyon in the United States. Colombians even boast that it’s slightly smaller, but deeper!

There are many ways to take in the full splendour, the first of which is simply to take the road from San Gil to Bucaramanga. On the road we took by car, you’ll discover a number of breathtaking viewpoints . You drive down into the canyon to the riverbed, where you become aware of the temperature gradients, before climbing back up the other side towards Bucaramanga.

Our Chicamocha Canyon travel guide: one of the natural wonders of Colombia

For families and children, a stop at the Chicamocha National (Amusement) Park might be a good idea. There are tons of fun activities to be enjoyed, and you can cross the canyon by gondola.

But to experience, feel and touch the magic of Chicamocha, the best thing to do is either raft the river or paraglide over it !

10 Best Things to Do in San Gil: Colombia’s Adventure Capital

' src=

San Gil, known as Colombia’s adventure playground, offers a wide range of activities for thrill-seekers and those looking for more relaxed fun. This post will go into detail and tell you everything you need to know about the ten best things to do in San Gil, Santander, Colombia.

These recommendations are from my personal experience in San Gil, as I have travelled here on two occasions and did 8 of these 10 activities, the only exceptions being mountain biking and rock climbing. I guess a third trip will be in store for the future! Enjoy!

Juan Curi Waterfall (Cascada de Juan Curi)

Juan Curi Waterfall, San Gil Colombia

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, you can try canyoning or rappelling at Juan Curi waterfall. This 180-m high waterfall is one of the top places to visit in San Gil, and I visited on both of my trips to San Gil.

After rappelling down the rock walls, the natural pool at the bottom is the perfect place to swim and relax, taking in the tranquil surroundings. Alternatively, you can book full-day canyoning trips from many tour guides in San Gil.

The hike to get to the waterfall takes 15 minutes from the Juan Curi Parque Ecologico entrance . Less common, if you’re looking for a fun adventure on your way back from the waterfall you can try scrambling through the giant boulders along the river bed.

The cost to enter Juan Curi Parque Ecologico is 15,000 COP ($3.50 USD) and the cost to rappel down the waterfall is 70,000 COP ($17 USD). You don’t need to book in advance, you can just show up to Juan Curi and a qualified guide will be there to take you rapelling.

There are two ways to get to Juan Curi Waterfall. The first is coming with a tour guide from San Gil for rappelling or canyoning. The second, and recommended way of getting there is by taking a local bus. Head to Terminalito bus station and ask for “Juan Curti”, which will cost you 5,000 COP ($1.25 USD) each way. On your way back, go on the opposite side of the road and wait for the bus heading to Charala.

We took public transportation on both visits to Juan Curi with no issues. You may have to wait a bit for the bus heading back to San Gil. We ended up hitchhiking back from a friendly local during our second visit to Juan Curi.

Looking for the Best Hostel in San Gil?

where to stay in san gil colombia

Macondo Hostel is our favorite hostel to stay in San Gil. It offers free, accurate, and up-to-date info on things to do, where to eat, etc. They also offer a heated jacuzzi pool, a garden with mango and papaya trees, and weekly Tejo Nights.

Try Paragliding in the Chicamocha Canyon or near Curiti

Chicamoch canyon paragliding san gil santander colombia

For an experience you won’t soon forget, try Paragliding at Curiti or Chicamocha Canyon. With the scenic views and relatively cheap prices, San Gil is the perfect place to check this off your bucket list!

The most popular option is paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon. This is the more scenic option with breathtaking views and scenery. You will also fly much at a much higher altitude, with the potential to reach 1,000 meters if conditions are good. The second option and of which I did is the lower altitude flight over the Curiti valley. The views are less scenic than Chicamocha, but still spectacular.

Paragliding flights typically only last 10-15 minutes at each place, but allow a full afternoon or morning in your schedule as it takes an hour to and from by bus, as well as time for set up and waiting time while others in your group to fly.

The cost to paraglide at Chicamocha starts at 250,000 COP ($60 USD), and 150,000 COP ($36 USD) for Curiti, very reasonable compared to other locations in the world.

Our recommended tour guide for a fun and safe adventure if you’re planning to go in Curiti is Parapente San Gil (Paragliding San Gil). This is the one we organized through and they were very professional. The most popular tour guide for Chicamocha Canyon is both Parapente Chicamocha (Paragliding Chicamocha) and Parapente San Gil.

Whitewater Rafting down the Suarez River

white water rafting in San Gil in the Suarez River

Another popular adrenaline-pumping activity must-try is white-water rafting. Not for the faint of heart the Suarez River is one of the few places in South America with Class 5 rapids, the highest class of rapid possible before injury or death is common.

Having only experienced Class 3 rapids before and it being my friends first time rafting, we weren’t sure what to expect. Despite our uncertainty, we were excited. Thankfully our guide was an experienced rafter, giving us detailed instructions on how to maneuver through the rapids and how to communicate effectively as a team.

As we hit the first rapid, we were both thrown forward, almost falling off the raft. We were exhilarated by the sheer power of the rapid, and we knew that this was going to be a thrilling adventure. Thinking it must be at least a Class 4 rapid, our guide was quick to say it was only a Class 3.

As the rafting adventure continued, we encountered more challenging rapids, with a few Class 4 and Class 5 rapids along the way. Thankfully, no one on our raft fell off on any Class 5 rapids, however, there were a couple falls on Class 3 and 4 rapids. By the end of the trip, we both felt a sense of accomplishment for having made it out unscathed.

The best tour guide to book your trip with is Colombia Rafting Expeditions (CRE), the only operator with Grade 5 IRF qualified guides, as well as safety kayakers going ahead of the raft. The cost with CRE is 265,000 COP ($65 USD) per person which includes lunch. It is a bit more expensive than other tour guides in town, but worth the extra cost given their higher standards of safety.

For those less extreme or those traveling with a family, rafting on the Fonce River (Class 2 & 3 rapids) is a popular option. Their are two sections of the river you can raft on, La Arenera or near Juan Curi Waterfalls.

Hike part of the Camino Real from Barichara to Guane

Camino Real. Barichara to Guane

For those a bit less extreme, hiking the scenic 6.4 km Camino Real section between the beautiful colonial towns of Barichara and Guane is the perfect day trip.

Originally built by the indigenous Guane people in the area, the Camino Real is a historic stone paved road through the Santander area winding through six remote towns and villages.

This hike can be done in either direction, but going from Barichara to Guane is the more popular route due to the trail being mostly downhill, allowing one to take in the stunning scenery at a more relaxed pace.

However, given our more hardcore nature, and feeling up for a challenge, we decided to start in Guane, hiking uphill towards Barichara.

Along the way and after a steep climb up to the top of a ridge, you will arrive to Mirador de la Piedra, a stunning viewpoint overlooking the valley. After the viewpoint you will follow along the stone trail passing several traditional farmhouses, with some friendly locals selling cold drinks and handcrafts.

Either way, make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you energized and hydrated throughout the hike. Take your time to appreciate the natural beauty of the landscape and immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of the Colombian countryside.

Depending on when you go, make sure to stop to check for ticks every once in awhile, as my friend I was travelling with had one on him. He was a bit worried it had dug itself into his leg, so wanting to burn it off he went to a local farmhouse, where a local lady then proceeded to just pick it off his leg and flick it to the ground.

For those with more time, hiking the full 45 km Camino Real route is possible over a 2 day span. Starting in the Village of Barichara, the route takes you through the Village of Guane, Town of Villanueva, Town of Jordan, and Town of Los Santos. Villanueva is the perfect mid-way point for a nights rest.

For those wanting to know more or spend more time in Barichara and Guane, make sure to check out the following post with all things Barichara and Guane!

Mountain Biking Chicamocha Canyon or Suarez Canyon

best things to do in San Gil

If you love mountain biking, a day trip in the Chicamocha Canyon or Rio Suarez Canyon is perfect for you. Take in the stunning views of the mountains, rivers, and canyons around San Gil, while enjoying the challenge of navigating the steep and rugged terrain.

The most popular tour guide to organize your trip with is Colombia Bike Junkies. They provide high-quality dual suspension bikes built for the mountains, all the safety gear you need, experienced and friendly guides, as well as water and lunch.

The most popular day tour to book takes you through the Chicamocha Canyon. Taking you into the depths of Colombia’s largest canyon with 45 km of downhill bike riding, you will pass waterfalls, coffee and tobacco farms, as well as the secluded pueblo of Jordan. The tour also includes a stop at a natural pool along the way to refresh and swim. The cost is not cheap, setting you back 395,000 COP ($95 USD) for the 12-hour trip.

Another popular day tour option is biking in the Suarez Canyon. The Suarez Canyon offers a great mix of both downhill and cross-country bike riding, making it perfect for adventure seekers looking for a little bit of everything. As you make your way through the winding paths of the canyon, you’ll have the opportunity to soak in the stunning Andean views. You’ll also have the chance to explore the charming colonial villages of Galan and Barichara, which offer a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region.

Insider Tip – Try the Hormigas Culonas!

Big Assed Ants for Breakfast, San Gil Colombia

One delicacy San Gil is known for that you cannot leave without trying are their hormigas culonas , the large big-bottomed ants. Popular amongst locals, these ants are roasted, mixed with salt and spices, and eaten as a crunchy snack similar to popcorn. The tradition of eating these ants goes far back hundreds of years to the pre-Colombian tribes living in the area.

Caving at Cueva de la Vaca or Cueva del Indio

Cueva de Vacas - San Gil Adventures

Caving is another unique experience that you can enjoy in San Gil at Cueva de La Vaca or Cueva del Indio.

The top cave to visit in the area is Cueva de la Vaca, located outside of Curiti, and is possible to be planned in combination with paragliding for a full day trip adventure.

Enjoy the view of stalactites overhead as you climb, crawl, and slide your way through narrow passages and wade through shoulder-deep water, with some spots where you are unable to touch or have to swim underwater.

For those with fears of complete darkness, confined spaces, and deep water, this will test your limits and reward you with a feeling of accomplishment long after you’re finished.

Contact or visit the tour company Gua-iti Aventure Sin Limite in Curiti to book your cave adventure today.

The second cave you can visit is Cueva del Indio, located in the town of Paramo. This is the most famous cave in the area, and you can zip line down into the mouth of the cave. Once inside, you will follow a path through waist deep water, observing bats and learning about the different stalagmites and stalactites.

Insider Tip – Eat Traditional Paisa Food!

10 Best Things to Do in San Gil: Colombia's Adventure Capital -

When we travel, we typically eat most of our meals at restaurants serving local dishes. Our favorite restaurant for high-quality Colombian food in San Gil was El Meson del Arriero , which specializes in traditional paisa food from the Andes region of Colombia. Here you can try Colombian favourites such as Bandeja Paisa.

Bungee Jumping over Rio Fonce

bungee jump rio force

If you’re feeling particularly daring, why not try bungee jumping over the Rio Fonce? Like other adrenaline-pumping sports, San Gil is the top place to bungee jump in Colombia.

Tour operator Colombia Bungee Jumping has built a 230 ft structure over the Fonce River exclusively for bungee jumping, with trained personnel and safety measures in place. This thrilling activity will really get your heart pumping.

Cost is 80,000 COP ($20 USD) for the jump and includes photos which they’ll email to you after with a completion certificate. Getting there is easy and a short 10,000 COP ($2.50 USD) taxi ride from San Gil. We’d recommended visiting late morning before lunch.

La Mojarra Rock Climbing Park in the Chicamocha Canyon

La Mojarra climbing, san gil activities

If you’re a thrill-seeker looking for an unforgettable adventure, rock climbing in the Chicamocha Canyon is an experience not to be missed. With sheer rock faces and dramatic overhangs, the Chicamocha Canyon offers a unique and exhilarating climbing experience that will push you to your limits.

The most popular spot to rock climb in Chicamocha Canyon is the popular La Mojarra climbing park. Here there are over 200 routes on the orange sandstone cliffs, with grades ranging from 5.7 to 5.14, perfect for both beginner and experienced climbers.

And when you’re not climbing, the canyon is also home to a wealth of other outdoor activities, from hiking and biking to paragliding and rafting. So why not pack your gear and head to the Chicamocha Canyon?

If you are a lover of rock climbing and plan to visit Southeast Asia, check out my partners post on her experience climbing at Green Climbers Home in Thakhek, Laos, one of SE Asia’s premier climbing destinations!

You will find cheap and quick meals popular amongst the locals, otherwise known as comida corriente. You can also buy tamales, soups, stews, and fresh sausage.

If craving something sweet, there is a variety of fresh fruits such as strawberries, avocados, or bananas, or freshly squeezed juices, smoothies, or milkshakes!

Play Tejo, Colombia’s National Sport

Tejo in San Gil Colombia

For a taste of local culture, try playing Colombia’s national sport of tejo. Dating back all the way to the 15th century, this game was created by the indigenous people living in the Turmeque region near Boyaca, Colombia.

This beer-fuelled activity, also popular among local men, involves throwing lead weights at targets filled with gunpowder, which is like a mix between bowling and shot put.

If staying at Macondo Hostel, they offer weekly Tejo Tuesdays where all guests are invited to attend the local Tejo Hall. It is a blast and an epic way to spend your evenings in San Gil.

Costs are cheap, coming in at only 10,000 COP($2.50) for a group to play a few games.

Hike up to Cerro de la Cruz Viewpoint

Cerro de La Cruz San Gil Colombia.

Finally, don’t forget to hike up to the Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint from town. This viewpoint is home to a giant white cross, which was installed by the Jesuits back in 1888. At night the cross becomes illuminated and visible from San Gil.

The hike is relative easy taking only 30 minutes to hike up, and the panoramic views are breathtaking, making and it the perfect way to cap off your adventure-filled trip to San Gil.

Safety Tips in San Gil

San Gil is a very safe place to travel, with friendly locals eager to help in any way possible. We even hitchhiked back to town from Juan Curi waterfall in someone’s 4×4 truck. We only had to put up with the driver whistling at every woman we passed on the road.

How to get to San Gil

There are many bus companies throughout Colombia, however, for longer journeys the best and most comfortable lines to choose are Copetran, Expreso Brasilia, Berlinas, Expreso Bolivariano, and Rapido Ochoa.

From either terminal, the bus ride to San Gil will take 7 to 9 hours depending on traffic, with prices starting at 50,000 COP ($12 USD). Given the length of the ride, we believe it is worth spending a bit more to upgrade to one of the more luxury buses which start at 70,000 COP ($17 USD).

Unless traveling on a holiday, you typically do not have to book in advance and can just show up to the terminal an hour or two before, as buses leave the station frequently. It is recommended to check bus times online if booking with one of the more luxury buses, as they leave less frequently

You will find it all here in “La tierra de aventura”, or “the land of adventure”.

In this article, you can read about the 6 best things to do in San Gil, where to stay, nice places to eat, and more tips for San Gil, Santander.

San Gil Barichara city

Things to do in San Gil?

San Gil itself is not big, but from this place, you can do a couple of great activities. During our stay, we did all these activities in and around San Gil and recommend popular activities like rafting but also unknown activities. Read below our 6 recommended activities to do in San Gil, Colombia.

Tip: Use the map below to see where San Gil’s best things are located. Click on the top right corner to enlarge the map. If you click on the star symbol next to the title, you can save this map to your Google Maps account. You can show or hide different categories on the map. You can use this map to navigate when you are in San Gil.

#1 Rafting in San Gil Colombia

You will likely visit San Gil to challenge yourself and enjoy the adventure San Gil has to offer. There is one activity not to be missed when you are in San Gil: rafting at Rio Suarez. Rafting in San Gil is one of the best places in the world to do this. Together with countries such as Chile, Canada, New Zealand, and Cambodia.

If you do the same tour as we did you will be picked up at your accommodation and taken to the instruction building. All preparations are made here and all the time is taken to explain everything clearly to you. It is important to know that experience is not necessary. The instructors are professional and guarantee the safety of the group.

After the instructions, you will be taken to the river and the tour will begin. During a 3-hour trip on the water, you will encounter rapids of category IV and V. This is awesome because you are paddling through rough waves and it is typical of what you expect from rafting. In addition to all the maneuvers that you have to perform and the many adrenaline boost that you get, there are also parts to relax and enjoy the environment.

We did this tour and recommend it as it surpassed all of our expectations and is professional. In addition, they are certified by the Colombian government to perform this tour on these high categories. Tours are sometimes sold on the street by agencies that are not certified, they do not take the safety measures very seriously. So pay close attention to where you book this tour. Our advice is to book the same tour as us , then you are sure to book right.

If you are traveling as a family with children, the rapids of categories IV and V may be too extreme, in this case, you can also go rafting with the family on another river with a category of III or lower. Read more information about rafting with a family here .

Keep in mind that you will be working on this activity from about 10 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon.

#2 Barichara

Barichara is often described as the most beautiful village in Colombia, and for good reason. It is a beautiful small village with impressive architecture. It is surrounded by green plains and high mountains. Walking through this village, where it seems as if time has stood still, is a joy. The nice shops and boutique restaurants ensure that Barichara should not be missed when you are in San Gil.

In Barichara you can visit many churches and different viewpoints. The best thing that you can do is to walk at Guane from the centrum, do this at the end of the day when you have seen all the important sights of Barichara. This is a great hike because you have magnificent views during the walks. Also don’t forget when you are in Guane to visit mirador Guane, from this place you can overlook the whole valley. Guane is a village that, like Barichara, has a lot of character. From Guane you can take the bus back to Barichara and/or San Gil on the square in front of the church.

How to get to Barichara : from the centrum of San Gil you can easily take a direct bus from the bus station to the center to Barichara. Buses depart every 30 minutes, travel time from San Gil to Barichara is approximately 30/45 minutes.

Where to stay in San Gil

Option 1 excellent value for money: Hostel Trip Monkey We stayed at Hostel Trip Monkey and recommend it. The price-quality ratio is very good. The staff is nice and especially the atmosphere in the hostel is great. They serve excellent breakfast and it is a great place to meet other travelers. Check price and availability for Hostel Trip Monkey here . Option 2 quality and cozy: Hostel La Casona Don Juan If you like to stay in a place where it is lively, Hostel La Casona Don Juan is recommended. This family hostel organizes many activities that are fun to do in the evening. In addition, the rooms are neat and it is above all a nice place to stay without having to spend a lot of money. Check price and availability for Hostel La Cosana Don Juan here .

#3 Paragliding over Chicamocha Canyon

Paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon is the best place in Colombia for paragliding. We did this in Medellin because at this point we didn’t know we were going to San Gil.

We spoke to many travelers in San Gil who were excited about paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon. We were told that they were amazed by the beauty of the Chicamocha Canyon, they found it breathtaking to see nature at such a height.

Paragliding is a special experience because you are floating in the air and can enjoy the beautiful view. Take-off and landing are the most active moments because during the flight you float quietly through the air. The flight itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The best paragliding tour according to many travelers is this tour because everything is well arranged and most important they are qualified. In addition, they are competitively priced.

Tip: if you suffer from altitude sickness or balance organ, we advise you to take a motion sickness pill before the trip. There is a morning or afternoon group that departs from San Gil.

San Gil paragliding

#4 Caving in San Gil Colombia

From San Gil, there are two caves to visit, called Cueva de la Vaca & Cueva del Indio. We visited del Indio because we could combine this in one day with a visit to the waterfall de Juan Curi (next point more about this). It is a fun activity where you walk with a guide and swim through the cave. During the tour, you will enter large open spaces with hundreds of bats. You can only visit the caves if you don’t have problems with walking.

We did the excursion with Terra Sua. This office is located on the large village square next to the Paramo police station. You can easily get there by taking a bus from San Gil to Paramo. Upon arrival you can book a ticket for the activity, it is not necessary to book a tour for this.

San Gil caving

#5 Cascada de Juan Curi in San Gil Colombia

This is the best waterfall in the San Gil area. The waterfall is 180 meters high where you can enjoy a natural pool at the bottom. When you arrive at “Parque Ecologico Cascadas de Juan Curi” you have to hike 20 minutes before you arrive at the waterfall.

Sign Up for Newsletter banner

From San Gil, you can easily take a direct bus from the centrum to the waterfall. It is also possible to take a bus from Paramo (excursion cave visit Cueva del Indio). From Paramo, you have to take the bus to San Gil. Tell the bus driver you are going to Juan Curi and he will drop you off on the main road. Here you can then take the bus to Cascada de Juan Curi. This allows you to combine your visit to Cueva del Indio and Cascada de Juan Curi.

Tip: If you want to abseil at the waterfall, you can only do this in the morning, in the afternoon this is no longer possible.

San Gil Cascada de Juan Curi

#6 Zip line in San Gil

The Peñon Guane activity complex is 10 minutes away from San Gil. At this complex, you can do various activities. The most fun activity is the zipline over the Guane Gorge. This is the longest zipline in South America, awesome to do and for sure one of the best activities to do in San Gil. At high speed, you can enjoy a breathtaking view. Besides the zipline, you can also do other activities like extreme swing, human catapults, bungee jump in South America, and the highest zipline bike in the world.

From the center in San Gil, take the bus towards Barichara. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at the Peñon Guane activity complex.

What else can you do in San Gil Colombia?

In addition to all these activities, there are several activities to undertake, such as kayaking , bungee jumping, taking an adventurous trail, mountain biking, hiking, walking in the park ‘El Gallineral’. There is a lot to do in San Gil, Santander.

How many days do you need for San Gil?

We recommend staying 4 nights (5 days) in San Gil. You need this time as there is so much to see in the San Gil area and many activities also last all day. This gives you enough time to do the best activities in San Gil.

If you follow our itinerary through Colombia you can see that San Gil is not close to the other destinations. Because of this, it is not smart to stay in San Gil for a very short time. After all, you don’t want to be traveling for the most part during your trip.

Where to stay in San Gil Colombia?

After all the activities which you are likely to do in San Gil, it is important to have accommodation where you can relax. We have written down our two favorite accommodations for you. Due to their popularity, both properties are fully booked quicker than other properties in San Gil.

Excellent value for money Hostel Trip Monkey

Hostel Trip Monkey Barichara

We stayed at Hostel Trip Monkey and recommend it. The price-quality ratio is very good. The staff is nice and especially the atmosphere in the hostel is great. They serve excellent breakfast and it is a great place to meet other travelers.

Quality and cozy Hotel campestre Casona del Camino Real

hostel la casona don juan

If you like to stay in a place where it is lively, Hostel La Casona Don Juan is recommended. This family hostel organizes many activities that are fun to do in the evening. In addition, the rooms are neat and it is above all a nice place to stay without having to spend a lot of money.

Where to eat in San Gil?

In San Gil, you have plenty of options to choose from in terms of restaurants. We ate at Mike’s at Gringo, Penelope Pizzeria, and Meson del Arriero. All three places are close to each other and recommend.

Gringo Mike’s is our favorite place because of its location, in a small courtyard, you can sit and enjoy your evening. The menu is diverse and the food they serve is good. Our recommendation is to have one of the burgers, this is a local specialty. We ordered the blue cheese burger which we changed to the vegetarian option with black beans. Delicious combination with the caramelized onions. When ordering you can indicate whether you want a small or large portion, go for the small version because this is more than enough. A drink with a burger with fries costs about 31,000 pesos ($8.00).

Penelope Pizzeria is, as the name implies, the best place in San Gil to eat pizza or Italian dishes. We recommended their pizza. Also at this place, you sit in a nice courtyard and you can relax in the evening. We ordered the pizza with spicy peppers and if you like a little spicy food, this is also a dish for you to try. You can eat here plus a drink for 26,000 pesos ($6.70).

Finally, we recommend Meson del Arriero. This is not a fancy place but a place where the locals come. The plate is not nicely laid out, but the food they serve is extremely good. If you like something different and want to eat Colombian this is a good place. Go for the Cazuela Arriera, this is a kind of pulled pork dish with potatoes, delicious. A dish with a drink costs about 23,000 pesos ($6.00).

How to get to San Gil?

San Gil is best reached by bus, plane, or car. It is easiest to travel to San Gil from Santa Marta, Bogota, or Medellin.

We recommend traveling by night bus to San Gil. We took the night bus from Santa Marta to San Gil ourselves. The advantage is that you do not have to book accommodation because you are traveling at that time, plus you do not have to travel during the day, which saves a lot of time. Because San Gil is a bit further from surrounding places, it takes a few hours to get here, so we recommend using the night bus.

You can find all the transport tickets  here at Bookaway . We used Bookaway to book all our bus tickets. They’re easy to use and book with, and we’ve explored the best destinations in Colombia with their busses.

If you travel to Colombia by plane and you are looking for a car to rent, you can rent it through  Rentalcars . We use Rentalcars when we want to travel by car to discover new destinations. They’re easy to use and book with.

Best time to visit San Gil

Colombia has a tropical climate. Because it is close to the equator, the temperature is the same all year round and there are few temperature fluctuations. Colombia has a rainy and dry season.

The driest period is from December to February. July is the hottest month and April, May and October have the most rainfall. On average, the temperature in San Gil is 25℃ degrees, which is pleasant to travel to San Gill all year round.

Want to see more of Colombia?

From San Gil, you can visit several destinations. If you follow our Colombia itinerary , Bogota is your next destination.

In addition to Bogota, you can also travel to Medellin, or north to Cartagena, or via Santa Marta to Tayrona National Park, Minca, or Palomino. Cartagena is the city where you can see many colonial remains in the historic center. In Santa Marta you can start the lost city trek, Tayrona National Park is the most beautiful national park in Colombia, Minca is a mountain village where you can make nice hikes and Palomino is a beach destination.

What to Do in San Gil – Colombia’s Adventure Sports Capital

Sharing is caring!

What to Do in San Gil - Colombia's Adventure Sports Capital south-america, colombia

San Gil Colombia is a small town located in the Santander department and is known as the adventure sports capital of Colombia. While the town may be small, thankfully there are a ton of things to do in San Gil, Colombia, which makes it one of my favorite destinations in Colombia, particularly if you love a little bit of adrenaline.

San Gil is centrally located just south of Bucaramanga the largest regional city, which serves as the primary transport hub to arrive in San Gil.

Things to Do in San Gil Colombia

The town itself is small, with a walkable downtown core set among the Colombian hillsides, although the sidewalks are obscenely narrow.

San Gil was one of my favorite small towns in all of Colombia, one that I could have happily spent even more than the two weeks we passed there.

View of San Gil - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

White Water Rafting

Speaking of extreme, San Gil Is one of the top white water rafting destinations in Colombia.

In there area you will find two rivers to run at various grades of intensity.

The Suarez River offers runs suitable for beginners and pros alike, with groups trips ranging from Class III to Class V.

Rafting San Gil - Río Fonce - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

The Suarez was named when the conquistador Gonzalez Suarez Rendon tried to cross with his horse, but sudden flooding caused the horse to drown.

The Rio Fonce — which passes right through town — is another, slightly tamer option with Class II to III rapids.

Either way, you’re sure to have a beautiful time out on the water and get your adrenaline going.

Body Boarding

Rather than traditional white water rafting though, we opted to do something a little different… Going body boarding through the Class III Rio Fonce!

Here you’re given a life jacket, helmet, swimming flippers for your feet, and a little floaty board that you hang onto.

Rather than being in the safety and comfort of a boat, here you are plopped directly into the water, bobbing like a cork in the river, and facing the roiling currents of Class III rapids head on and alone.

Trust me, it’s way different than sitting in a boat and some of those waves can send you vertical or flip you outright.

You still go with a guide who paddles alongside you in a kayak and tells you which way to go.

It was a crazy fun day on the water, and I’d highly recommend it.

Chicamocha National Park

Chicamocha Canyon is Colombia’s answer to the Grand Canyon: a steep sided canyon carved out by the mighty Chicamocha River.

The canyon is 227 kilometers long and nearly two kilometers deep — which is even deeper than the Grand Canyon.

El Coloso de Santander - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

The bus from Bucaramanga to San Gil offers great glimpses of the canyon, but there is also an official park where you can take a 20-minute cable car ride down.

You’ll also find amusement style attractions, like a giant swing that propels you out into space.

Rock Climbing at Mesa de los Santos

Mesa de los Santos (near the tiny town of La Mojarra) offers the best sport climbing in all of Colombia.

But it’s located on the other side of Chicamocha Canyon, so you’ll have to take the scenic way down the cable car to get there from San Gil.

Salto del duende en la Mesa de los Santos - Santander - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

There are more than 100 bolted sport routes ranging from 5.6 to 5.14, and the place is sure to keep you busy for days or weeks.

Stay at the nearby Rock Refugio .

Go Paragliding

There are strong thermal air vents in the mountains above San Gil, making it an ideal location for taking a few laps in the air with a professional guide.

You will find many tour operators among the downtown core who will arrange for the transport and activities.

Paragliding in Colombia - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

Our taxi driver took us up into the hills where we arrived at a bare hillside with a commanding view.

We had to wait a while for our turn to come up, but eventually I got strapped in and we took flight!

It was an awesome experience, my first time ever going paragliding, and something you must absolutely do.

Ask him do corkscrews if you want something a little more extreme!

My feet hanging over the valley - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

There are paragliding tours over Chicamocha Canyon — Colombia’s Grand Canyon — with up to 30 minutes of airtime, but the launch location is about two hours away and will cost around 160,000 pesos.

Many travelers opt for paragliding at the nearby Curiti, which is only about 40 minutes away, and costs 60,000 pesos, although usually only running 15 minutes of airtime.

Hormigas Culonas, which literally translates as big bottom ants, are a local delicacy in the Santander region of Colombia.

They actually just eat the backside of the ant, and not the head. Popping them into their mouth like popcorn.

Hormigas culonas o cuquis - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

The ants are harvested in the rainy season though, so if you are there during the dry season, you may find the ants aren’t the freshest…

Eat Carne Oreada

Okay, this one’s a little tastier than ant butts. Carne oreada is the traditional thin steak and is famous here in the Santander region.

I’m not sure if it’s just because we were eating vegetarian food for awhile or what, but the carne oreada we had was one of the best meals I had in Colombia up to that point.

It’s often served up with a side of yuca, arepa, potatoes, salad, and rice, and the meal is sure to leave you stuffed and satisfied.

Perfect after a day full of adventures.

Visit Barichara

Take a day trip to the quaint little colonial town of Barichara, with its narrow cobblestone streets and white-washed buildings.

The town of Barichara Colombia - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

The town isn’t very big, but just wandering around for a few hours is enjoyable enough itself in this beautiful town.

The Church in Barichara Colombia - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

Along the edge of town you can sit at one of the overlooks for a cool drink and soak in the view of the rolling valleys and the Rio Suarez far below.

Awesome views from the hike - Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

Just don’t make the mistake of searching for the cigar factory like we did. We were informed that it closed a long time ago.

From Barichara you can also make the three-hour hike to the town of Guane and then return to San Gil by bus.

Where to Stay in San Gil

Rather than stay at normal hostel in town, why not check out La Pacha Hostel and Camping , located a short bus ride from the center?

La Pacha Hostel- Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

La Pacha offers “glamping” in yurts on an idyllic nature retreat, but they’ve also got shared rooms in the hostel, access to a kitchen, etc.

We spent two weeks at La Pacha and had a great time with Justin, a British expat, and his wife Andrea, from Colombia.

They will even cook you up healthy vegetarian fare if you don’t feel like cooking.

You can get fresh goats milk or cheese from them as well.

Hanging out in the bus- Awesome things to do in San Gil Colombia

In the evenings you can hang out in the hammocks or in the “Magic Bus” which has been converted into a common area for reading or movies.

Visit San Gil Colombia

All-in-all, San Gil is one of the coolest little towns in Colombia and is definitely worth being on your list of places to go.

San Gil Information and History

a waterfall near san gil, colombia

The town of San Gil, Colombia was officially founded in 1689. The closest major cities are Bogotá and Bucaramanga. San Gil’s economy is mostly based on agriculture, with key crops being coffee, tobacco, and sugar cane. The town has also recently emerged as a hotspot for adventure travel. Visitors flock to San Gil for rafting, mountain biking, paragliding, and canyoning, to name a few. Useful Tip: San Gil is pronounced “San Heel” in Spanish!

My San Gil Trip Report

Getting to san gil.

I started my backpacking trip through South America by flying into Bogotá, Colombia. Although I ended up traveling for a total of 1 year, my original plan upon arriving in Colombia was much more modest—I had initially intended to travel for just 2 – 3 months!

Upon arrival in Colombia, the first things I did were to get my yellow fever vaccination (free at Bogotá Airport) and buy a SIM card. As a solo female and novice backpacker I was a little nervous about staying safe in Bogotá, so I started my Colombia travels in San Gil instead.

a road leading through rural scenery near san gil, colombia

To get to San Gil, I caught a Cabify to the Bogotá bus station and bought my ticket just a few minutes before the bus took off. Surprisingly, I was the only foreigner on the bus. The trip took 9 hours total, winding through breathtaking mountain scenery including cliffs and roadside waterfalls.

I disembarked in San Gil at 9:30 PM, surprised that the rest of the bus passengers remained seated and were continuing to further destinations. I caught a cab to my hostel and intended to shower and go straight to sleep. However the hostel was quite social and I couldn’t help but check out their movie night. Before I knew it, I was on a nocturnal city tour with a new Colombian friend.

a river running through a mountainous town in colombia

Day 1: City Center

My first day in San Gil was full of new experiences:  visiting a market, taking a local bus, and trying a menu del dia lunch. First up was experiencing a typical South American market. I took in the sights, smells, and tastes of the lively Mercado when I got breakfast there with a friend from the hostel. After a hearty Colombian breakfast of soup, eggs, and arepas, we walked up to La Gruta viewpoint to see the city from above.

Afterward, we went to the local bus station and boarded the next bus from San Gil to Barichara, a nearby colonial town renowned for its beautiful architecture. As passengers streamed in, the bus filled with a comical cacophony of sounds. There were no headphones in sight and each passenger was blasting a playlist of reggaeton songs from their phone speakers.

Day 1: Barichara

In Barichara we traced the edge of the town, following the path that overlooks the canyon below. Next we wandered through the town’s cobblestone streets, admiring the colonial architecture. We stopped to chat with the many vendors selling artisanal products. One was selling Hormigas Culonas (literal translation: “big ass ants”), which I wasn’t brave enough to try. For lunch we asked a local gardener for a recommendation, and he sent us to a fantastic local spot. I had the menu del dia, which in South America is a fixed menu lunch (soup, drink, and main dish) that is served quickly and at an unbeatable price.

By mid-afternoon we’d already explored all of the main sights in Barichara and took the bus back to San Gil. I realized that neither my Colombian friend nor I had used our smartphones all day! Instead, my friend had been stopping every few minutes to chat with locals, asking for directions or recommendations. I was surprised by how happy strangers were to talk to us. We also received excellent advice that simply isn’t available in guidebooks or on the internet. From then on, I made an effort to seek advice from locals for the rest of my trip.

Day 2: Casacadas de Juan Curi

My second day in San Gil began with a breakfast arepa from the Mercado, followed by a local bus trip to the Juan Curi waterfalls. From the park entrance it was a short walk to reach the falls, and on the way I saw so many butterflies! I sunbathed for a while and watched a Colombian couple bravely rappel down the waterfall.

When it was time to leave, I waited on the side of the road until I was able to flag down a bus back to town. I spent the rest of the afternoon working out in the local gym, where I was able to easily purchase a day pass. Back home I am a dedicated gym-goer, and I was a little worried about how I would keep in shape while traveling long term!

Day 3: San Gil to Santa Marta

On my third and last day in San Gil I lounged around in my hostel’s hammock, pool, and garden area and tried to calm my nerves before taking my first ever night bus. Next stop: Santa Marta , on Colombia’s Caribbean coast!

San Gil Trip Planning Information

Things to do in san gil.

I recommend prioritizing a visit to Barichara and Cascadas de Juan Curi. There are plenty of other things to do near San Gil, but if you’re traveling to other places in Colombia, chances are that you’ve already done or will do something similar. Adventure activities in San Gil are affordable, but if you’re on a very tight budget you can do as I did and skip them.

San Gil Weather and When to Go

In San Gil, the weather is warm year-round with cool nights. December to March and July to September are the dry seasons. You can still visit in the rainy season, but just be prepared for afternoon rain showers.

San Gil Hotels and Where to Stay

Thankfully, San Gil is a small town and you shouldn’t have a problem finding an affordable place to stay near the center. Here are my recommendations: Budget: Traveler Hostel . I stayed in the dorm here and loved it. They also have private rooms. The hostel is near the city center, comfortable, and clean. They have a huge garden area with hammocks and a pool that overlooks the city. The hostel also hosts great social activities including movie nights and dance classes.

a common area with seating in a hostel

Mid-range: Cafe Hotel Boutique Kjtagua . Get your own private room in the heart of the city, with a rooftop bar.

Splurge: Glamping Trinidad el Cielo San Gil . San Gil is great for experiencing luxury on a budget, and this glamping experience is a steal for the price. You’ll get your own private chalet with a giant hammock and hot tub overlooking the mountains.

Where to Eat and Drink in San Gil

The Mercado next to the main square is a great place to get an authentic and affordable breakfast or lunch. There are also vendors in the main square selling street food.

For fast and affordable options, check out the food court of Centro Comercial El Puente. In the historic center, you’ll also find a variety of western and traditional restaurants.  The quality of tap water in San Gil may vary. Ask your accommodation before drinking any, and when in doubt drink filtered/bottled water or travel with a LifeStraw .

Is San Gil Safe?

The historic center of San Gil is very safe. To be cautious, at night avoid walking alone in places such as quiet streets, the viewpoints above the city, and the area around the bus station. Check out my Colombia safety guide for more tips, and make sure you have travel insurance .

San Gil Budget and Money

Some vendors in San Gil accept cash only, and there are several ATMs in the city center.

San Gil is not yet overrun by tourism, meaning prices are significantly lower than other destinations in Colombia. Use this opportunity to let your budget recover, or to indulge in affordable experiences!

Expect to pay 1 – 3 USD for street food or breakfast and ~3 USD for a fixed menu lunch (“menu del dia”). A la carte meals, dinners, and Western food may cost around twice as much as local food.

For basic accommodation near the city center, anticipate paying 5 – 20 USD for a hostel bed and 10 – 40 USD for a private room with a private bathroom. There’s a huge range of accommodation options, with higher prices offering more luxurious stays.

Buses in and out of San Gil will cost ~1 – 3 USD per hour of travel.

What to Bring to San Gil

For a full list of what to bring, check out my Colombia packing list . I would stress the following:

  • Downloaded maps of San Gil and nearby areas you want to visit (use Google Maps or MapsME)
  • SIM or eSIM card
  • Rain jacket ( Women’s , Men’s )
  • Natural mosquito spray
