Breath life into history: Cockatoo Island’s engaging education programs (blog)

By visiting historic destinations, such as Cockatoo Island / Wareamah , teachers can help their students connect with history in a meaningful way. Students can complement their classroom learning and embark on a journey that brings history to life.

Keep reading to discover 4 key benefits of exploring historic places:

1. Establishing a tangible connection to the past

History becomes more than just dates and facts when students explore a historic destination like Cockatoo Island. For example, encountering landmarks from the island’s UNESCO World Heritage Listed Convict Site (1839-1869) and shipyard (1857-1991) will assist students to visualise what life was like in the past. By establishing a tangible connection with the island’s history, students will grow more invested in the people, events and stories that shaped our nation.

2. Active participation in learning

When students explore historic destinations, they become active participants in their own learning journey – especially if a knowledgeable guide is on hand to provide scaffolding. Encouraged to ask questions, make connections and engage in historical inquiry, students develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. As they journey through Cockatoo Island's historical precincts, students will become historians, unravelling the mysteries of the past and uncovering hidden narratives that textbooks alone cannot convey.

3. Appreciating the Legacy of the Past

By witnessing firsthand the remnants of past events and the lasting impact they had on society, students develop a profound appreciation for the legacy of historical events. Cockatoo Island provides a unique opportunity for students to reflect on the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of those who came before us. Understanding the continued relevance of historical events becomes easier when students see how they have shaped our present and continue to influence our future.

4. Enriching the study of history

The study of history is elevated when students engage directly with the spaces and stories that shaped it. Cockatoo Island's engaging and interactive education program complements and extends on what students have learned in the classroom. Whether it's exploring the former shipyard that played a significant role in the defence of Australia or delving into the hardships faced by convicts, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities and nuances of history. The island serves as an immersive classroom where stories come alive.

Are you ready for your students to see history come alive like never before? Book one of our 90-minute stage-specific education programs at Cockatoo Island!

Plus: Why not make the most of your visit by extending your excursion with a stay in our waterfront campground ? We offer schools 3 camping options, catering for different needs and preferences.

VDNKh: the Renowned Exhibition Park

Moscow has many parks, from the great forest parks towards the edge of the city, to Gorky Park and historic aristocratic estates. But VDNKh - the “Exhibition of National Economic Achievements” is absolutely unique.

The magic starts as you approach the park - with the futuristic Space monument and Cosmos Hotel, and Vera Mukhina’s giant steel statue of the Factory Worker and Collective Farmer, designed as the Soviet contribution to the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris. And then, when you pass through the huge central gates into the park itself, you find yourself in a different world - a complete "city" of extravagant monuments, pavilions and fountains, in every imaginable style, separated by wide open squares and broad avenues.

The park first opened in 1939 as an agricultural exhibition center, built to show off the achievements of Soviet farming to the urban population. It quickly became very popular, but it was closed during the Great Patriotic War. In the 1950s work started again on a more ambitious scale: it became a huge fantasy park celebrating the many diverse cultures of the Soviet Union’s sixteen Republics and the life of its people - the industries where they worked and the agriculture that put food on their plates. It attracted visitors from all over the Soviet Union, and became a hugely popular meeting place for Muscovites of all ages.

Over the decades new pavilions were added, and many were redesigned, and the result is an eclectic mixture of Stalinist neo-Gothic buildings with golden spires, neoclassical gateways and startling modernist constructions from the 1960s and 1970s, huge statues, elaborate fountains and themed pavilions in a wide range of exotic styles.

In the 1990s, this grand Soviet project went through hard times and a lot of the pavilions fell into disrepair, but in recent years it has been restored to its former grandeur. New attractions have also been added, bringing this historic park into the 21 st century without destroying its unique atmosphere.

 In our program:

  • You will explore the park - a real open-air architecture museum: dozens of unique pavilions, monuments and attractions, the Vostok rocket and the Buran Space Shuttle, the famous Fountain of the Friendship of Peoples, with its 16 larger than life golden statues, and much much more.
  • You will hear fascinating stories about the designers and the construction process, and how the park has changed over the decades - a process that is still continuing.

There are a number of possible routes around the park - the exact route will depend on the time of year and your tastes. At the end of the tour you will have time to explore some of the park’s exhibits and attractions - the unique Buran space shuttle, the Virtual Reality entertainment center, the Oceanarium, and the historic pavilions, or relax in one of the many cafes.

DAY1 | INTRODUCTION TO ST PETERSBURG

cockatoo island school excursion

  • Peter and Paul Fortress – the oldest architectural monument in the city. The date of the foundation of this foundation is considered the date of the foundation of St Petersburg itself. From its establishment the history of the city begins. In the fortress’s Ss Peter and Paul’s Cathedral almost all emperors and empresses of Russia are buried, including Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Nicholas II and his family.
  • Nevsky Prospekt – the main thoroughfare in the city; it is lined with grand buildings and is made up of several famous bridges. Practically every building on Nevsky has some interesting story or fact connected to it.
  • Field of Mars – this is where victims of the Russian Revolution of 1917 were buried.
  • Bronze Horseman – this is a symbol of the city; an equestrian statue of Peter the Great which was given to the city by Catherine the Great.
  • Strelka of Vasilievsky Island - the strelka is the very tip of the island and many old and interesting museums are found here. Also here are two old lighthouses featuring statues of personifications of Russian rivers.
  • Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral – this is one of the largest working Orthodox cathedrals in St Petersburg. It was Emperor Paul who desired the cathedral to resemble St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. Work only began in 1801, after Paul's assassination, and was completed in 1811. It subsequently became a monument to the Russian victory over Napoleon in 1812.
  • Peter the Great’s Cabin – this is one of the few buildings to survive from the era of the city’s famous founder.
  • Avrora Cruiser – another symbol of the city; it took part in military action in the Far East, but more famously played a role in the Russian Revolution as it fired a shot to begin the storming of the Winter Palace.

  DAY2 | CATHERINE PALACE

DAY3 | HERMITAGE AND ST ISAAC CATHEDRAL

cockatoo island school excursion

Hermitage (Winter Palace) – the Winter Palace is the main sight in St Petersburg. From 1762 to 1904 the palace served as the official winter residence of the Russian emperors. Its rich and varied architecture and sculptured décor have no match in St Petersburg. The Italian architect Rastrelli began building the palace in 1754 in the exuberant baroque style during the reign of Empress Elizabeth and so the style became known as Elizabethan baroque. The palace only took its final form during the reign of Empress Catherine the Great. It has over 1000 rooms, 117 staircases and around 2000 windows and doors. Today it holds the Hermitage – one of the world’s largest art galleries.
