Shamanism for Inspired Change & Transformation with Susan Mokelke

FSS President Susan Mokelke discusses the work of Michael Harner and the Foundation for Shamanic Studies and its relevance today. "Michael Harner’s genius in bringing us core shamanism, from the standpoint of preserving our future, is three-fold: Core shamanism is accessible to humanity regardless of culture; it can be learned and put into successful practice relatively quickly; practitioners of core shamanism work with fully compassionate spirits of the Upper and Lower Worlds, exclusively and explicitly for healing purposes."

"What's really important about shamanism is that there is another reality that you can personally discover...we are not alone."

— Michael Harner

Over tens of thousands of years, shamans developed a time-tested system of healing, using journeying and other practices. Michael Harner uncovered and synthesized these methods, enabling a breathtaking and personal access to the spiritual realms that is available to everyone. These teachings make possible nothing short of union with the entire cosmos. Learn more...

CORE SHAMANISM

Based on years of research and experimentation, core shamanism consists of the universal, near-universal, and common features of shamanism, together with journeys to other worlds.... Comprehensive, practical, life-changing. Learn more...

shamanic journey training

"After having personally practiced shamanism, shamanic healing, and shamanic journeying for more than half a century, I can say that there is nothing I have encountered in reports of the spiritual experiences of saints, prophets, psychedelic drug experimenters, near death survivors, avatars and other mystics that is not commonly experienced when following classic journey methods using a drum."

Shamans are often called "seers" or "people who know" in their tribal language because they are involved in a system of knowledge based on first hand experience. Shamanism is not a belief system. It's based on personal experiments conducted to heal and to get information. Learn more...

People ask me, "How do you know if somebody's a shaman?" I say, "It's simple. Do they journey to other worlds? And do they perform miracles?"

The three pillars of the Foundation are preserving, researching, and teaching shamanic knowledge. shamanic journey training

This online program was inspired by four questions repeatedly asked by clients, colleagues, friends and family. Those questions were:

I nspired by four questions:

  • What is a shamanic journey?
  • How do I journey?
  • What do I journey on or for?
  • How long do I journey for?

Begin your practice today.

 With 34 videos, eBook, MP3's, and PDF's

A Shamanic Journey is an ancient practice of direct revelation for insight, healing and connectivity. In the most basic terms, it is a form of deep meditation or inner consultation, initiated by ceremony and energy clearing, where one uses their imagination or creative visualization to connect with your inner self, your soul self, and/or helping spirits, in what is often referred to as non-ordinary reality, the invisible or unseen world, or other realms.

It is a common practice among many cultures regardless of geographic location and is a simple approach for direct access and spiritual information for personal empowerment, information, healing and guidance. It is YOUR GUIDANCE – not the guidance of someone else. I have been practicing the shamanic journey for as long as I can remember, before I had words to describe what I was actually doing!

30 DAY GUIDED INTRODUCTION TO THE SHAMANIC JOURNEY

Is available immediately.

FREE OF CHARGE!

Begin the Shamanic Journey Practice Today!

Start NOW with immediate access to all journeys, videos and supporting PDF's, as well as my Shamanic Journey Practice 30-Day Guided Introduction to the Shamanic Journey eBook. After the journey, participants are encouraged to write about their experience.

Initially, each journeyer practices for only 5 minutes at a time for one week. At the beginning of each new week the journeyer extends their practice by an additional 5 minutes, if desired, listening to one of the extended drumming MP3's.

At the end of the program each person will have potentially journeyed for at least 30 days, with enough practice to take the journey experience on your own or delve deeper with any one of the suggested resources.

We end with a community journey on “The Heartbeat of Humanity” sending love to all beings on the planet including Mother Earth, then out to the cosmos.

Our lives are so fast paced and stress filled that we seem completely out of balance. This FREE Shamanic Journey Practice - 30  Guided Day Introduction to the Shamanic Journey offers a safe, unique tool, based on ancient teachings, to create a greater sense of overall well-being and a deeper connection to self and others.

Applied Shamanism

Certificates & Training

The Applied Shamanism Training Program teaches students how to bring the power of shamanic practice into the modern setting with respect and integrity. All of our classes can be taken online with the exception of The Advanced Seminar in Applied Shamanic Practice.

Isa Gucciardi, Ph.D. is the co-founder of the Circle of Shamanic Practitioners and lead instructor of the Applied Shamanism training program.

Personal Development

The emphasis in this education is on the development of discipline, inquiry and the capacity to trust inner experience. Students are brought along the path of initiation by competent teachers who will help them develop a strong relationship with inner guidance and trust in their capacity to work with different forms of power.

Professional Development

Students receive education in the many ways in which shamanic practice can be applied to the modern context to address modern ills. Their education centers on understanding the emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances that arise from the disruption in connection with nature, others, and the self that is common today. This education prepares them to assist in healing others and helping restore balance to the earth.

Some of what is taught in the training:

  • Applied Shamanic Counseling
  • Soul Retrieval
  • Power Retrieval
  • Soul Part Exchange
  • Working with Energetic Interference
  • Guiding of Souls
  • Healing with Light & Sound
  • Drum Healing Techniques
  • Working with Legacy Lines

Graduates of these programs will have all the tools they need to establish and maintain a healing practice based in shamanic principles.

Some students complete the training in as little as 6 months, while others choose a more relaxed course of study over a period of 2 years. Shamanic Trainings

Modern and authentic shamanism with chris lüttichau, shamanic practitioner trainings, a powerfully transformative journey into the fascinating and empowering world of contemporary shamanism.

“I have had ten times as much healing and transformation in my one year of study with Chris as in the previous ten years of following my spiritual path alone. Chris is a person of great integrity and he brings the teachings forward with tremendous clarity… I remain amazed at my greater awareness and understanding of the world and how integral the teachings are to life.”

Leonora Adams

Embarking on a shamanic training will lead you into a powerfully transformative personal healing journey, enabling you to become a clear vessel for spirit.

We offer a One Year and a Three Year Training. Both will take you into a deep learning process in authentic shamanism. The methods and teachings remain true to traditional shamanism as it has been practised by indigenous people for thousands of years, yet they are brought up to date and conveyed in a way that makes them current and directly relatable to modern people and the western way of life. You will find everything we teach can be usefully applied to your everyday life and to empower your own personal journey.

The One Year and Three Year trainings enable you to explore the many different aspects to the teachings, where their integrity is maintained. There is guidance on how to make safe and empowering spirit contact, and instructions on genuine traditional shamanic methods such as soul retrieval. Integral to both trainings are the earth wisdom teachings on how to heal, how to live, how to be connected to the Circle of Life, how to awaken your own power and how to find your true self and your real identity.

The One Year Training is focused on the healing of self and then of others. The Three Year Training, because it is longer, includes more teachings such as the medicine wheels, ceremonies, and vision quests. Both of them have teachings on shamanic dreaming, lucid dreaming, and storytelling. Both trainings can enable you to become a shamanic practitioner.

shamanic journey training

During the course of a year, you will be guided on a journey into the fascinating and empowering world of authentic shamanism.

You will be guided according to your needs and encouraged to achieve your fullest potential within the circle.

The training is for beginners as well as those who already work with the principles of shamanism and want to go deeper.

shamanic journey training

The three year training encompasses everything in the one year training, plus a comprehensive exploration of more advanced ways of working shamanically.

These include the Way of the Council , Peacemaking , Dreaming , working with Plant and Animal Spirits , Ancestral Work and more.

The Three Year Training also includes the medicine wheels, ceremonies, and vision quests.

shamanic journey training

Lucid dreaming is a modern term for an ancient practice that teaches how to become aware of the fact that you are dreaming, and to direct your dream, while asleep. This awareness provides opportunities for making conscious choices and opens the door to personal growth, awakening, adventure and healing.

About Distance Shamanic Sessions:

There is no loss of energetic support and presence through distance shamanic sessions. In fact there is often a deeper connection. This is because interaction by voice and energy is often stronger without the distraction of the physical. It is important to have privacy for your session and to schedule at least 15 minutes to relax and prepare. A time for integration afterward is also important. A quality telephone headset is a very good idea but not crucial for single sessions or short series. Please note that ear buds without mouth microphone as well as speaker telephones do not carry the energetic qualities needed for this work.

After you've explored the different information and associated costs on the website you're welcome to schedule a 15-minute telephone conversation with Chris Davidson to see if this work feels right for you (please note that this cannot be a shamanic session, which requires formal preparation).

Personal Reflections Meditation

How the Shamanic Journey Transformed My Meditation Practice

Is it possible for us to reclaim mysticism as a vital foundation of our path?

How the Shamanic Journey Transformed My Meditation Practice

Many of my earliest childhood memories take place in nature. Sitting at the banks of a creek in rapt silence, marveling at the tenacity of crocuses blooming in late winter, and singing, drumming, and dancing surrounded by forests and fields. In my relationship to the earth, I found wisdom, enchantment, and magic. Truly, nature was my first dharma teacher. While I did not have the language for this at the time, my fingers can now trace the shamanic undercurrent present in these earliest experiences of the sacred.

It is this undercurrent that has become a transformative part of my dharma practice and my life. And, it appears I’m not alone in this. Whether through books like Zenju Earthlyn Manuel’s The Shamanic Bones of Zen , the rising popularity of wilderness meditation retreats, or even the growth of psychedelic-assisted therapies, we are now waking up to many of the shamanic foundations of meditation, dharma, and healing.

It was only after many years of Buddhist practice that I found myself reconnecting with the powerful experiences of my childhood and training as a shamanic counselor. I now use shamanic journey work and other practices for spiritual inquiry, personal growth, and healing. While at times this kind of practice contrasted with my Theravada Buddhist background, it has also brought me back to the magic and wonder of some of my most meaningful meditation retreats, and given me new tools to strengthen my own practice and support others in theirs.

At the heart of things, Buddhism and shamanism both share some essential traits: they seek to explore consciousness and to bring forth a type of liberation, balance, or healing. The word “shaman” even has etymological ties to the spiritual seekers of the Buddha’s day. Stemming from the term “saman,” meaning “one who knows,” in the Tungusic language family of Eastern Siberia, this root word is strikingly similar to the Pali “samana” and the Sanskrit “sramana”—a contemplative, wandering ascetic or monastic, much like the Buddha himself. The concept of shamanism is not specific to one culture or lineage, but rather refers to earth-based spiritual practices that can be found in the history of nearly every indigenous culture, from Tibet to Ireland to Senegal, and beyond. Wherever humans have connected in a sacred way with the earth, it appears that some form of shamanic practice has sprung forth.

One of the most common practices found across numerous cultures is the shamanic journey, a meditative form typically accessed through a process of visualization, accompanied by repetitive, rhythmic drumming, with the drum’s beat serving as an auditory driver that entrains the practitioner into a trancelike state. The practitioner enters into this altered state of consciousness and connects with a guide—a source of inner wisdom that can take the form of a light, a deity like Kuan Yin, an animal, an aspect of the earth itself, or something else entirely—for the purpose of healing and spiritual inquiry. Through this connection, a person may have visionary experiences and come away with insights that could not be accessed by our everyday, thinking mind. In fact, recent findings from the University of Michigan’s Center for Consciousness Science indicate that shamanic journey work can lead to experiences of unity, ego dissolution, and insightfulness at levels similar to or greater than a range of psychedelics.

In this practice, wisdom and healing are revealed through imagery, messages from a guide, and the intuitive sense of the person embarking on the journey. I have worked with clients who experienced collapse or harm in their sangha to gain, through the journey, a sense of closure where none was realistically possible in ordinary life. In the altered state of the journey, they received wisdom and support from their guides, spoke their mind to a teacher they were no longer in contact with, and reclaimed their own power and a newfound sense of peace. In other situations, those I work with have been pointed toward deeper truths: a young woman struggling with trauma was offered the safety and mirroring from her guide that she never received as a child and was able to glimpse her inherent worthiness. A man grappling with a profoundly painful inner critic was able to see the critical voice as empty of self and ready to be released.

I have seen this kind of journey support clients in deeply understanding the inner workings of their own suffering, building a deeper sense of trust in themselves and their practice, and bringing peace to places where confusion, craving, or aversion previously ran rampant. It is an incredibly powerful contemplative and therapeutic form, and I love to share it with longtime meditators for this reason.

But long before I came to the shamanic journey, I fell in love with the dharma. In my early days of dharma practice, I voraciously attended as many silent retreats as I could. I found in the silence a profound joy and a sense of reconnection to the states of awe and mystery I experienced as a young child. In my first retreats, long-forgotten memories rushed back: bringing chocolates and other offerings to a nearby stream and leaving them for the unseen beings I imagined lived there, closing my eyes and sitting alone in my bedroom as a 6-year-old, watching thoughts appear like bubbles from the bottom of a deep lake. Retreat practice brought me back to those formative experiences of the sacred.

As modern practitioners of an ancient mystic tradition, how do we make space for its inherent magic in the 21st century?

Over the years, I listened as elder teachers shared their experiences in India with iconic figures like Dipa Ma, who was known to have precise recall of past lives, among many other miraculous abilities. Dipa Ma became a beacon for me—not just as a mystic, but also as a woman practitioner and a householder. But while my teachers’ voices were filled with awe, their stories often left me feeling as though that possibility of powerful, mystic experience was relegated to another era. Where was the space for encounters with the sacred within our hectic, technology-driven lives?

While communities around me rode the cresting waves of secular mindfulness , this question lingered. Beginning around 2010, as smartphone meditation apps gained prominence and many Western convert Buddhist communities embraced the scientific study of mindfulness, I began to encounter a dharma that was increasingly touched by the influences of capitalism; productivity culture ; the erasure of earth-based, Asian, and indigenous practices; and a patriarchal mistrust of the numinous. This modern dharma was in an accessible, secular language that even spiritual skeptics could trust, and research had shown over and over that these ancient practices were effective and evidence-based. But I wondered, how much of the mystic, intuitive side of practice were we sacrificing in exchange for scientific gravitas?

Throughout this time, I also encountered several teachers who could embrace and lead from this place of mysticism . One teacher, in a tone that seemed half reverent and half mischievous, smiled and exclaimed, “The Buddha was a shaman!” during her dharma talk on a two-month retreat. Even without shamanic training, something in those words rang with truth for me, and I held them close.

As I began to encounter the shamanic journey, this teacher’s words resonated even more, and it felt clear that the mystic aspect of my practice had found a welcoming home. Quickly, I saw that journey work and meditation complemented each other beautifully. Through the journey, I could more easily access many of the transcendent experiences and insights that occurred for me in periods of intensive silent retreat, and together, shamanic and Buddhist practices offered new avenues to explore my understanding of the dharma.

This shifted my relationship to practice. Instead of “just noting,” as so many teachers would encourage during more visceral or visionary experiences in meditation, I found that I could call on my journey practice for support on the cushion, listen to my own intuitive knowing, and be open to the experience itself as a teacher in a deeper way. With this approach, practice became more vibrant, more creative, and more connected to the natural world. The path began to have a greater sense of wholeness because no parts of myself or my experience were left out.

Today, when I guide others in shamanic journey work, we often explore these territories of exclusion. What has been left out in our practice that longs to be integrated and included? What messages has our culture given us about spirituality, and how does that influence our experience of the sacred? Can we trust intuitive awareness, or are we gripped with doubt and skepticism? All of this is part of our practice and part of the path.

Like most shamanic practitioners, the Buddha spent time in nature in a deep meditative state, connecting with seen and unseen aspects of reality, and bringing back wisdom that could ease suffering. While times have changed, and we may not be wandering ascetics or samanas anymore , this continues to be our task. As modern practitioners of an ancient mystic tradition, how do we make space for its inherent magic in the 21st century?

Perhaps it first begins with opening our minds and imaginations to new possibilities. So many Buddhist stories are shared through the more animistic or shamanic lenses of the Buddha’s time but today are seen only as metaphors. The devas appear at the birth of the Buddha, a group of monastics bring metta practice to a haunted forest, or the earth herself rises up on the eve of the Buddha’s awakening. In the shamanic context, these encounters might be seen as visionary messages emanating from an extraordinary field of wisdom and compassion, but in our modern culture they easily shrink down to a fiction.

Of course, these stories are incredibly useful as simple allegories, but I wonder, has our history of mystic experience turned into myth because our modern imagination cannot contain the possibility of something more magical, more wild? Is it possible for us to reclaim mysticism as a vital foundation of our path? What would the historical Buddha advise—the one who sat at the foot of the Bodhi tree in a profoundly altered state of consciousness? I imagine he might smile gently and say, “ Ehipassiko ”—come see for yourself.

shamanic journey training

Have you ever felt disconnected from your spirituality or searching for a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you? Shamanic journeying may be just the tool you need to embark on a journey of self-discovery and connection with the spiritual realms. But what exactly is shamanic journeying? How does it work? And how can you get started? In this article, we will explore the basics of shamanic journeying, including its origins, benefits, and step-by-step techniques for practice. So, grab a journal and an open mind, and let’s dive into the world of shamanic journeying.

Card 1

What is Shamanic Journeying?

What Is Shamanic Journeying?

Definition and Origins

Shamanic journeying is an ancient practice that has been used by indigenous cultures around the world for centuries as a way to connect with the spiritual realm. Here are some definitions and origins of shamanic journeying:

  • Definition: Shamanism is an ancient practice that involves connecting with the spiritual realm through altered states of consciousness. Shamanic journeying is a specific shamanic technique that involves entering into a trance state to explore the spiritual realm.
  • Origins: Shamanic journeying originated in indigenous cultures around the world, including Native American, African, and Siberian cultures. Shamans were regarded as spiritual leaders and healers who could communicate with the spirit world to gain insight and wisdom.

The practice of shamanic journeying typically involves the use of a drum or other rhythmic instrument to induce a trance state. The shaman then travels to the spiritual realm to seek guidance, wisdom, or healing. In many cultures, shamanic journeying is seen as a way to connect with one’s ancestors and to receive guidance from them.

Shamanic journeying is a powerful spiritual practice that allows individuals to gain access to the wisdom and guidance of the spiritual realm. It can be a transformative experience that helps individuals to connect with their true selves and to gain insight into their lives.

How It Works

Shamanic journeying is a powerful technique that can open the door to the spirit realm and allow for deep personal transformation. It works by altering the brainwaves of the journeyer to facilitate a state of expanded awareness that allows them to interact with spirit guides, receive insights and learn important lessons.

Here is how shamanic journeying works:

  • Shift in Brainwaves: Shamanic journeying involves slowing down the normal waking beta brainwaves and entering into a deeper alpha or theta brainwave state. This shift allows the journeyer to access their subconscious and connect with other realms of consciousness.
  • Spirit Helpers: Once in this altered state of consciousness, the journeyer can communicate with their spirit helpers like power animals, ancestors, and angels. These helpers are believed to have access to vast knowledge and wisdom that can assist the journeyer in gaining greater understanding and insight.
  • Symbolic Language: The spirit realm often communicates with symbolic language, which may appear to the journeyer in the form of metaphors, images, or other sensory experiences. These symbols can be interpreted to reveal deep insights into the journeyer’s personal path, purpose, and potential.
  • Integration: Upon returning from the journey, the journeyer is encouraged to integrate their experience into their daily life. This can involve reflecting on the insights received, journaling about the journey, or simply allowing the experience to inform their thoughts and actions as they move forward.

By using shamanic journeying as a tool for self-discovery and personal growth, individuals can gain greater clarity, insight, and meaning in their lives. As with any spiritual practice, regular journeying can enhance one’s connection to their spirit guides, deepen their understanding of the self and the universe, and ultimately lead to greater spiritual fulfillment.

Shamanic journeying can be a powerful tool for self-discovery, healing, and spiritual growth. It can offer a unique and profound way of connecting with the world around you and discovering your own inner truth.

Preparing for the Journey

Preparing For The Journey

Setting Intentions

Before embarking on your shamanic journey, it’s important to set your intentions for the experience. Setting intentions will help you focus your mind and create a clear purpose for your journey.

Remember that setting intentions is a personal process, and there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to do it. The most important thing is to be clear about what you want to get out of your shamanic journey, so that you can fully engage with the experience and receive the insights and guidance you’re seeking.

Cleansing and Grounding

Preparing for a shamanic journey is essential for creating a safe and sacred space for the journey itself. One of the crucial components of preparation is cleansing and grounding . This involves clearing the mind and body of any negative energies or distractions so you can connect with the spirit world with clarity and focus.

To perform a cleansing and grounding ritual, there are several techniques you can use. These include:

These techniques can be used individually or in combination with one another, depending on what feels most effective for you. The goal is to release any negative energy and to create a clear and open space for the journey.

By cleansing and grounding yourself before journeying, you can approach the experience with a clear mind and an open heart. This can enhance your ability to connect with the spiritual realm and receive valuable insights and guidance.

Creating a Sacred Space

Creating a sacred space is an important part of preparing for a shamanic journey. This is because the sacred space acts as a container for the journey and helps to create a sense of safety and protection. Here are some steps to help you create a sacred space for your shamanic journey:

  • Cleanse the Space: Begin by physically cleaning the space in which you will be journeying. This will help to remove any negative or stagnant energy from the space. You can do this by dusting, sweeping, or vacuuming the area.
  • Set the Mood: Creating a calming atmosphere can help to relax your mind and body. You can do this by lighting candles, burning incense, or using essential oils.
  • Define the Space: Use items to define the space, such as a small table, altar, or special cloth. This will help to mark the space as sacred and separate from everyday life.
  • Call in the Spirits: You can also call in the spirits, such as the four directions, the elements, or your spirit guides, to help protect the space and support your journey.
  • Personal Items: Bring in personal items, such as crystals, feathers, or other sacred objects, to help connect you to the space and provide comfort during the journey.
  • Music: Playing soothing music or drumming can help to set the tone and induce a meditative state, which is ideal for shamanic journeying.
  • Avoid Distractions: Try to eliminate any possible distractions such as electronic devices or loud noises from outside by closing the door or putting on some noise-canceling headphones.

By taking these steps to create a sacred space, you are setting the intention for a safe and powerful journey. This will help you to connect with the spirit realm and receive insights and guidance from your spirit guides. Remember to trust the process and allow for whatever experience arises during the journey.

The Journey

The Journey

Entering the Lower World

To begin your shamanic journey, you must first enter the Lower World. This is a non-ordinary reality, where you can interact with spirit guides, discover insights about yourself, and even access deeper levels of consciousness. Here are the steps to entering the Lower World:

  • Set your intention: Before entering the Lower World, clarify your intention for the journey. What are you seeking guidance on? What questions do you want to have answered? Focus on this intention as you begin your journey.
  • Create a safe space: Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed for the duration of your journey. You may want to light candles or burn some incense to create a calming atmosphere.
  • Use rhythmic sounds: Rhythmic sounds like drumming or rattling can help you enter into a trance state. Find a drumming or shamanic journeying track, or use a physical instrument to create your own rhythm.
  • Breathe deeply: Take a few deep breaths to relax and clear your mind. Visualize yourself descending down a staircase or tunnel, getting deeper and deeper into a trance state with each step or breath.
  • Visualize the entrance: Imagine a hole, cave, or other entrance into the Lower World. Focus on this image in your mind’s eye, and visualize yourself passing through that entrance.
  • Meet your guide: Once you’ve entered the Lower World, you’ll likely encounter a spirit guide or power animal who will accompany you on your journey. Observe your surroundings and wait for your guide to appear.

Remember to trust the process and go with the flow. The Lower World is a unique and personal experience for each journeyer, so be open to whatever comes up for you. Stay focused on your intention and allow yourself to embrace the experience.

Meeting Your Power Animal

After entering the Lower World, it’s time to meet your Power Animal. Your Power Animal is an essential guide and ally for your shamanic journeying practice. They can provide you with protection, support, and valuable insight into your life.

Here are the steps to meeting your Power Animal:

  • Set your intention: Before meeting your Power Animal, focus your mind and set your intention to connect with them. It’s important to approach this encounter with respect and openness.
  • Call out to your Power Animal: To call out to your Power Animal, you can use a mantra, a drum or rattle, or simply your voice. Address them by name and ask them to appear.
  • Be open to different forms: Your Power Animal may not appear in the form you expect, and that’s okay. They may present themselves in the form of an animal you’ve never seen before, or even a mythical creature. Trust your intuition and embrace the experience.
  • Ask for their guidance: Once you meet your Power Animal, respectfully ask for their guidance and help. They may have wisdom to share or specific actions for you to take in your life.
  • Express gratitude: Before leaving, express your gratitude to your Power Animal for their guidance and support. This is a way to honor them and deepen your connection.

Meeting your Power Animal can be a profound and transformative experience. Trust the journey and the guidance of your ally.

Exploring the Spirit Realm

Now that you have met your power animal and established a rapport with them, it’s time to explore the spirit realm. This is where you may encounter other spirits or entities that have messages or guidance for you.

Step 1: Follow Your Power Animal

Allow your power animal to guide you through the spirit realm. Trust them to lead you to where you need to go. Don’t try to control the journey or where it takes you.

Step 2: Observe Your Surroundings

As you explore, take note of your surroundings. What do you see, hear, smell, or feel? Pay attention to any details that stand out to you. These could be symbols or messages from the spirit realm.

Step 3: Communicate with Spirits

If you encounter any other spirits or entities, approach them with respect and an open mind. Ask if they have any messages or guidance for you. It’s important to remember that not all spirits have your best interests at heart, so use your intuition and discernment.

Step 4: Trust Your Intuition

Don’t discount any messages or guidance that you receive during the journey, even if they don’t make sense at first. Trust your intuition and allow the insights to unfold over time. You may need to integrate the guidance into your waking life slowly.

Step 5: Prepare to Return

After you have explored to your heart’s content, it’s time to prepare for your return to reality. Check in with your power animal and thank them for their guidance. They will know when it’s time to return.

In the next section, we’ll discuss how to process and integrate any insights or messages from the journey.

Returning to Reality

Returning To Reality

Processing and Integrating Insights

After completing a shamanic journey, it’s important to take the time for processing and integrating insights to understand and internalize any messages received during the journey. This can be done through a variety of methods such as meditation, reflection, and discussion with others.

One effective way to process and integrate insights is through the use of a journaling practice. Writing down your experiences during the journey, your interactions with your power animal and other spirit guides, and any messages or symbols received can help to solidify the experience in your mind and create a record for future reference.

Another helpful technique is to engage in reflective exercises . This can involve asking yourself questions such as “What did I learn from this journey?” and “How can I apply these insights to my everyday life?”. Taking the time to think critically about the experience and its meaning can help to create a deeper understanding and promote personal growth.

It’s important to be patient with the process of integration , as it may not happen immediately. Insights may occur gradually over time, and it’s important to stay open and receptive to the messages received during the journey. Utilizing practices such as meditation and mindfulness can also help to deepen the integration process.

Ultimately, the goal of processing and integrating insights from a shamanic journey is to apply the lessons learned to your everyday life, creating a deeper sense of purpose and understanding.

Journaling and Reflecting

After completing a shamanic journey, it can be helpful to take some time to reflect on and integrate any insights or experiences you had during the journey. One way to do this is through journaling.

Journaling: Set aside some time to write down your thoughts and experiences from the journey. This can help you make sense of what you saw, felt, and heard, and may also help you remember details that you might forget otherwise.

Reflection: Take some time to reflect on what came up for you during the journey. What did you learn? Did you receive any messages or insights? How do you feel now? Reflecting on your journey can help you better understand the experience and how it relates to your life.

Gratitude: Consider expressing gratitude for any guidance or insights you received during the journey. This can help you to deepen your connection with the spiritual realm and cultivate a sense of trust in the process.

To organize your journaling and reflecting, you may find it helpful to use a table with different prompts or questions to guide your writing. Here is an example of what that might look like:

Troubleshooting

As with any spiritual practice, shamanic journeying can come with its own set of challenges. These obstacles can arise during any part of the journey – from preparing your intentions to processing the insights gained after the journey is complete. It can be discouraging and frustrating when obstacles arise, but with patience and persistence, they can be overcome. Let’s take a closer look at some common challenges that may arise during shamanic journeying and explore potential solutions to keep you on track for a transformative experience.

Common Challenges and Solutions

It’s common to face challenges when practicing shamanic journeying, but there are several solutions to overcome them. Here are a few examples:

  • Difficulty entering a trance state: If you find it hard to enter a trance state, try different techniques such as deep breathing, drumming, or visualization. Alternatively, practice meditation or another relaxation technique to help achieve a trance state.
  • Distracting thoughts: If your mind is distracted by thoughts during your journey, try focusing on your breath, repeating a mantra, or visualizing a peaceful scene to calm your mind.
  • No clear guidance: If you feel lost or unsupported during your journey, try setting a clear intention before you begin or ask for help from your spirit guides or power animal.
  • Fear or anxiety: If you experience fear or anxiety during the journey, try grounding yourself by imagining roots growing from your feet, connecting you to the earth. You can also ask your spirit guide for protection or envision yourself in a protective bubble of light.
  • No apparent results: If you don’t seem to receive any results or insights from your journey, don’t worry. Trust that the journey was helpful in some way, and try again later. Remember that each journey is unique and might not always produce immediate results.

Remember, these are just a few common challenges and solutions. Every journeyer’s experience is unique, and a variety of unique issues may arise. Embrace them as opportunities for growth and continue to trust in the process.

In conclusion, shamanic journeying is a powerful tool for self-discovery, healing, and connection to the spirit world. It allows individuals to explore their psyche, receive guidance from their higher self, and connect with their power animals and spirit guides. However, it is important to approach this practice with respect, intention, and grounding.

Preparing for the journey involves setting clear intentions, cleansing and grounding oneself, and creating a sacred space for the journey to take place. It is crucial to approach the journey from a place of openness and trust, allowing oneself to surrender to the experience and receive the gifts that the spirit world has to offer.

During the journey, individuals will enter the lower world and meet their power animal, who will guide and protect them on their journey. The spirit realm can be a place of incredible beauty, but also powerful emotions and insights. It is important to keep an open mind and heart, and trust in the journey as it unfolds.

After the journey, it is important to take time to process and integrate insights gained from the experience. Journaling and reflecting are powerful tools for integrating these experiences into daily life.

Troubleshooting is also important to consider, as journeying can sometimes bring up challenging emotions or experiences. It is important to approach these challenges with compassion and seek support if needed.

Overall, shamanic journeying is a valuable practice for connecting with the spirit world and accessing innate wisdom within oneself. With respect, intention, and grounding, it can be a transformative experience for personal growth and healing.

Workshops & Professional Training

Shamanic Practitioner Trainings Ancient Ways - Timeless Practices

Starts in October 2024

The core intention of this training is to learn and practice a wide range of time-honoured shamanic methods of healing and transformation, building confidence in their application and nurturing the role and responsibilities as a shamanic practitioner. This inevitably requires a willingness to deep self-enquiry on what will be a powerful personal journey. Individual limitations and false beliefs will be challenged, whilst unknown and authentic hidden gifts are awakened, allowing them to merge with the healing methods and knowledge the course will provide. Confidence will rise as individuals, challenged by personal limitations, begin to emerge as independent workers of the ancient ways dancing their dreams and empowered to act.

By undertaking this journey as a group, we will tap the dynamic energy of community effort, ever increasing the quality and depths of working within the realms of spirit.

This Training Course consists of the following main subjects:

Soul Retrieval

Soul loss occurs mainly through traumatic experiences. Through this loss one may feel incomplete, fragmented, or disassociated from life and relationships with other people. We will explore in detail the causes, treatments and the effect of a soul retrieval on a client.

Extraction Medicine

This is an ancient healing art of ‘extracting spiritual intrusions’ or ‘misplaced energy’ from a person’s physical and/or ethereal body. Transmutation of these intrusions will be introduced and practiced in a safe way for both the practitioner and the client.

The Garden of Soul

This modern healing method is a form of ‘shamanic counselling’ which establishes direct communication between the individual and their illness/condition, nurturing a deep and intimate relationship where transformation can take place.

Ceremony & Ritual

From weddings to funerals, from rites of passages to ecstatic dancing, throughout history human kind has attempted to contact the divine via various ceremonies and rituals. We will work with a wide range of ceremonies from shamanic cultures worldwide, and you will learn about the key elements necessary to create ceremonies for the self, other individuals, the community, the land and the earth’s cycles.

Earth Skills & Time in Nature

To complement the spiritual aspects we will expand our understanding of the natural environment through the application of a range of bush skills employed both for ceremonial and practical purposes. A good deal of time will be spent outdoors in the rich natural environment around the centre. This crucial connection with nature has been referred as viewing the “visible face of Spirit”.

Shamanic Divination

Shamanic Divination is mediation work which involves the use of tools such as bones, twigs, stones, bark, beads etc. to foresee trends based on the present/past, or to understand the present based on patterns revealed by those tools.

Medicine Wheel

The original use and purpose of the Medicine Wheel are open to conjecture, although today the primary function of the Medicine Wheel is a ceremonial tool for healing and self-discovery. A variety of uses of this ancient tool will be shared with you, including the exploration of your personal unique Medicine Wheel through the spirit keepers of the four directions.

Healing Circles

The synergy of Group Healing work lies at the heart of core shamanic practices and provides opportunities for healing that simply cannot be found otherwise. We will be working in-depth with this ancient form of healing, participants will assume a range of roles in this highly collaborative practice with every participant having the opportunity to be on the receiving end.

The Ancestral Realms

Without the Ancestors, we would not exist. They bequeath us life – we inherit it from them. All indigenous societies recognise and revere their Ancestors and we will commune and work with our blood ancestors as well as ancestral spirit teachers and shamans.

“Psychopomp” and Death as our Ally

Part of our journey together will be dealing with the issues of death. This includes the method of ‘psychopomp’, a Greek term meaning ‘to lead the soul’, helping earthbound spirits to cross over to the land of light.

Art, Music & Dance

Essential to any kind of shamanic work is integration of an experience, and manifestation of the underlying intention of the practices. Music and dance will be commonly employed to aid this process plus a range of creative activities such as the making of sacred objects, drawing, whittling, and the making of ceremonial items such as smudge sticks.

This course fulfills the necessary requirements to work as a shamanic practitioner and with successful completion of the training, participants will receive a certificate.

DISCOVER YOUR TRUE NATURE

What is Shamanism?

Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and moreover, a way of life. It is a way to connect with nature and all of creation. The word  shaman  originates from the Tungus tribe in Siberia. Anthropologists coined this term and have used it to refer to the spiritual and ceremonial leaders among indigenous cultures worldwide. The word  shamanism  can be used to describe the ancient spiritual practices of these indigenous cultures. Clearly the countless similarities between various ancient traditions played a role in the continual generalization of the word.

Over the past few decades the term “ shamanism ” has been popularized throughout the western world, especially in new-age circles. Today, it can be difficult to distinguish between traditional forms of shamanism and modernized, often esoteric practices that utilize the term.

One could view shamanism as the universal spiritual wisdom inherent to all indigenous tribes. As all ancient spiritual practices are rooted in nature, shamanism is the method by which we as human beings can strengthen that natural connection.

Who is Brant Secunda?

Brant Secunda  is a shaman, healer and traditional ceremonial leader who completed a 12-year apprenticeship with Don José Matsuwa, the renowned Huichol shaman who passed away in 1990 at the age of 110.

For over 30 years, Brant has been leading conferences, workshops and retreats around the globe. He is a co-founder of the American Herbalist Guild, the Peace University, and the  Huichol Foundation.  He is also the co-author of the award-winning book  Fit Soul Fit Body, 9 Keys to a Healthier, Happier You .

How did Brant Secunda become a shaman?

When he was 18 years old, Brant Secunda traveled from his native New York to the remote Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico to find the Huichol people. He was adopted by the revered Huichol shaman Don José Matsuwa and underwent a rigorous 12-year apprenticeship with him.  Brant was initiated into the Huichol Indian tribe through a five day vision quest, a period of isolation in the wilderness without food and water, in a sacred cave in the Huichol Sierras known to the Huichols as the Cave of Grandmother Growth.

Other rites of passage included capturing and releasing a wild rattle snake with his bare hands to face his fear of death, enduring a fourteen month fruit fast to enhance his sensitivity to the natural world, and surviving a nine day vision quest so that he may, according to Huichol cosmology, learn the language of the gods. The nine-day vision quest, considered lengthy by Huichol standards, along with several other five-day vision quests, helped to establish him as a respected initiate within the Huichol nation.

Who are the Huichol people?

The Huichol Indians are a small tribe of approximately 35,000 living in central western Mexico near Ixtlan in the Sierra Madre Mountains. They are said to be the last tribe in North America to have maintained their pre-Columbian traditions. Their shamans and healers practice today as they have for generations. In part, their survival is due to the focus of their traditions, as well as their remote mountainous territory.  The Huichol way of life continues today much as it has for thousands of years. Still without electricity or running water, the Huichol people rely on their relationship with nature to sustain their communities.

Huichol is a term given by the Spanish. In their own language, they refer to themselves as  VIRARICA , which translates as “The Healing People.” The Huichol were once considered a Nation of Shamans. Today, there are still many shamans who continue to perform ceremonies and heal the people.

What is shamanic healing and how does it work?

Ancient shamanic healing techniques have been passed down for thousands of years. Today, shamans continue to heal through shamanic methods and practices that work with an individuals spiritual and physical energy; realigning a patient’s energy.

What does Dance of the Deer Foundation do?

The Dance of the Deer Foundation is dedicated to the continued survival of the ancient indigenous way of the Huichol. Brant Secunda and Don José Matsuwa founded our organization with this vision and today, we continue to support the Huichol people and their culture.

Don José emphasized to Brant that the cultural survival of the Huichol people depended upon external awareness of the Huichol way of life. In 1979, Brant Secunda established the Dance of the Deer Foundation Center for Shamanic Studies to disseminate and preserve Huichol culture, practices, and traditions, and to provide direct assistance with the goal of promoting self-sufficiency and economic independence.

As executive director of the Dance of the Deer Foundation, Brant Secunda instituted and maintains the functions of the foundation and conducts seminars, pilgrimages, and retreats on Huichol shamanism worldwide.

What is the Huichol Foundation?

The Huichol Foundation was started in order to expand the long-standing project for the Huichol Indians and to garner greater international support for their culture.

What is the book Fit Soul, Fit Body about?

Together with 6-time Hawaii Ironman World Champion Mark Allen, Brant founded Fit Soul Fit Body to help bring together the worlds of fitness and spirituality.

What is Shaman Chocolates?

Brant founded SHAMAN Organic Chocolates to help create direct support for the Huichol people. 100% of their profits go back to help Huichol villages.

How can I get involved?

Seminars, pilgrimages, and retreats on Huichol shamanism are offered worldwide through the Dance of the Deer Foundation. The website offers a wealth of information including the Shamanism Journal , with new articles uploaded monthly. You may also sign up for the monthly e-newsletter.

These shorter events are also a wonderful way for those already on the shamanic path to reconnect with Brant Secunda and his teachings of Huichol culture.

During each seminar, Brant will present useful tools to embrace the spirit of nature and your inherent power as a human being. These teachings of Huichol Shamanism can provide you with a deeper understanding of the interwoven power of nature and can lead to a more fulfilling life. Seminars provide an opportunity to explore shamanism and Huichol culture in an easy-to-follow format integrated into a single day. Though seminars are shorter than many of our programs, they are a great way to take part in the shamanic circle.

Seminars Offer:

  • Specific teachings and tools to integrate into daily life
  • Teachings of shamanic health and healing
  • Spiritual exercises to rejuvenate the mind and awaken the soul
  • Sacred Dance of the Deer ceremony to honor all of creation

Our workshops range from 2–3 days and provide valuable shamanic tools to deepen your relationship with yourself, others and the environment. Each day is rich with informative lectures, providing detailed teachings about shamanic practice and direction on how to integrate shamanism into a modern lifestyle.

Workshops are another wonderful way to begin your shamanic journey and equally beneficial for those seeking to take another step forward on the shamanic path. Learn practical ways to deal with stress and negativity. Better understand your connection to nature and how you can strengthen that connection. Through this experience, you will expand your awareness of the spiritual essence of life and further awaken yourself to sacred indigenous knowledge.

Our Workshops Offer:

  • An opportunity to learn spiritual tools to create inner balance and harmony
  • Time to dedicate to personal spiritual growth
  • An overview of various shamanic concepts and specific in-depth teachings
  • Exhibitions of beautiful and authentic Huichol visionary artwork
  • Insight into the Huichol culture through storytelling, dance, and slideshows

Immerse yourself in the teachings and daily spiritual practices of shamanism. Our retreats range from 2 nights to 2 weeks and are the best way to gain a deeper connection to nature through daily shamanic practice. Each day is interwoven with spiritual practice, sacred ceremony, traditional pilgrimage, and lectures on the ancient teachings of healing and Huichol cosmology.

Join us for a retreat to learn how to create a life of natural health and harmony. Ancient indigenous wisdom guides the retreat experience, manifesting a unique mix of village lifestyle and powerful pilgrimages and ceremonies. The retreat experience provides a template for shamanic practice in your daily life. By the end of a retreat, you will gain an understanding of how to integrate shamanism into all that is you. Each retreat location is carefully chosen for its unique natural environment and  kakuyari —  places of power.

Our Retreats Offer:

  • In-depth experience of shamanism and a routine for daily shamanic life
  • A way to deepen your understanding of shamanic wisdom
  • Opportunities to visit spectacular places in nature and to connect with these places in a spiritual way
  • Ceremonies, including the Dance of the Deer ceremony, to empower yourself, your community and Mother Earth
  • An escape from the hectic and often disconnected modern world

Each year we offer journeys through some of the most spectacular places around the globe. We have journeyed through amazing places — Guatemala, Japan and New Zealand — with each location offering an opportunity to explore the amazing beauty of Mother Earth like never before. Join Brant Secunda to explore nature and revered sacred places in a way unlike any other.

In Japan, we traveled through Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo, Mount Fuji and Wakayama. At each place we visited sacred sites revered for thousands of years and wandered to countless remote lakes, mountains, waterfalls and hot springs. In New Zealand, we journeyed throughout the North Island, to Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula, Lake Rotorua, Lake Taupo, Mount Taranaki and the Waitomo Caves region. There we soaked in hot spring rivers and hot water beaches. We went on pilgrimage to the sacred lakes and mountains and performed ceremonies to honor and connect with the spirit of the Pacific Ocean and this wonderful land.

Each location is hand selected by Brant Secunda for each Journey. These are rare events so space is extremely limited. Keep an eye out for our next journey and join us for an experience that you will keep with you for the rest of your life.

Our Journeys Offer:

  • Unforgettable experiences in some of the most beautiful places on Earth
  • Opportunities to journey with a small community in a very spiritual way
  • A unique vacation experience for the mind and body like no other
  • Pilgrimages to numerous places of power to empower your life
  • Conversations with Brant and other participants, ranging from deep spiritual teachings to simple personal connections and openness

For those looking to intensify their study of shamanism, we offer advanced study groups in the United States and Europe. Our East Coast, West Coast, and European study groups each meet 2–4 times each year in various locations. We have met in places such as Alaska, Sedona, Cape Cod, Florida, Hawaii, Mt. Shasta, Allgäu, Crete, Zion National Park and more.

The Advanced Study Groups are for those wanting to commit to the shamanic path and embrace the ancient Huichol culture as their own. Testimonials

“Why do I need to be in a workshop with a group of people to connect with nature and the earth around me? I don’t – but the group offers me the opening to learn, to be with a teacher who sends us out into nature with lessons on how to connect in a powerful way…

My journey continues and within it I share my experiences with a group of individuals who are on their own path, all of us connecting and learning who we are, who we have been, and who we will always be.”

“Brant has shown me the power of balance. He has brought hope to my life and trust in all of life to my heart. But the scope of his work goes well beyond just the person.

Brant gives us all a chance to pray for the earth and all who live on her. And there is perhaps no more important time to do just that than right now!”

“We came to Alaska from the hustle and bustle of our life in Argentina. As soon as we put our feet on this beautiful land our anxiety and everything else faded away. The ceremonies opened our heart and soul like a flower blooming with the unstoppable force of nature.

The eagles, the ocean, the glacier, the wisdom from Brant and his teachings and the great feeling of love between everyone…I cannot be more grateful for this amazing time and it will forever be engraved in my heart.”

“Crete is paradise on earth. The land is so alive, filled with wildflowers and herbs growing in mass profusion. Golden eagles soar overhead. The Dance of the Deer Center and ceremonial area overlook the turquoise waters of the Cove of the Sacred Healing Waters and the Mediterranean Sea.

Brant Secunda’s ceremonies here are especially powerful, with the energy of all the groups he has led here over the years. I fell in love with the extraordinary beauty and feminine power of this land. An outrageous journey!”

The basis for all the depossession work taught will be a foundation of full alignment with Divine Source and pure light without any necessity for adversarial engagement with any energies or spirits. This is very different from what Christian and other organized religions call exorcism.

This hybrid class will be offered both in person in Methuen, MA and online through Zoom 10:00 am-1:00 pm and 2:00-5:00 pm.

  • This class may be taken individually or as part of the  Shamanic Light Healer Apprenticeship Program  that runs from October 2022 through May 2023. A discount is available when registering for all the November through April classes.  Click here  for more about the full program including a list of each individual class with a link to the details. All classes will be offered through Zoom, with weekend programs also having the option to attend in person at Circles of Wisdom in Methuen, MA.
  • Prerequisites Prior attendance at  Healing with Spiritual Light ,  Shamanic Deathwalking , and  Shamanic Extraction  or permission of instructor. Students must have at least a basic knowledge and some experience with shamanic journeying. You need to have a relationship with a power animal and a spirit guide and be able to travel to the upper and lower worlds of non-ordinary reality. You can fulfill this prerequisite by taking  Walking the Shaman’s Path of Wisdom  online in October 2022, taking the recording of this class when it is available after October 20th, or an Introduction to Shamanic Journeying class with another qualified teacher or with Sandra Ingerman on The Shift Network. Sandra Ingerman’s book:  Shamanic Journeying, A Beginner’s Guide , is highly recommended reading. Leontine’s YouTube video:  Shamanic Drumming for Journeying -15 minutes , can be listened to while practicing journeying to your helping spirits.
  • If you are traveling to Methuen, MA to take one or both weekend classes, please email  Circles of Wisdom  for the discounted rate code for a nearby Hampton Inn.

Depossession, the removing of spirits and entities from a person or place, is a critical and vital practice in shamanic healing. This class is for serious shamanic practitioners and students who will engage in this work with clients and who have already had shamanic training in Healing with Spiritual Light, Shamanic Extraction and Alignment, Psychopomp, or Deathwalking training.

If you have not had these exact classes and feel that your other shamanic training will qualify you for this class, you can email Leontine at  [email protected]  requesting to enroll in the class, explaining your previous training with a list of classes taken and the instructors.

You will learn:

  • How to set both your inner and outer energies and the energies of the space you are working from so that you can work in a strong safe energy field and are in a protected and safe environment.
  • Meditation techniques to strengthen your energy field, mind and emotions to allow you to do depossession safely.
  • Meet and merge with compassionate helping spirit teams who will work with you doing depossession.
  • How to deal with strong dark spirits and “negative” energies and entities in a safe and easy way.
  • How to recognize and clear possessing spirits that masquerade as friendly or cloak, disguise or hide.
  • How to recognize, communicate with and clear possessing spirits of disembodied souls that are stuck in the middle world including ones who are resistant to psychopomp.
  • How to work with quartz crystals in depossession healing work.
  • How to heal the client after depossession and repair their energy field to repel and prevent further attempts by spirits to possess them.
  • How to empower, protect, clear and restore your own energy and the energy of space after doing depossession work .
  • How to deal with multiple possessing entities and spirits.
  • A powerful depossession method from ancient Chinese medicine that is easy and effective.
