More than masters of disguise, wallpaper borders shed a rather campy legacy and return with modern verve. Here's why they're making a comeback, plus a look at their creative applications and several tricks for custom embellishment.

David Hicks employed eye-popping black borders to “divide” the amber walls of his St. Leonard’s Terrace dining room into panels, a look inspired by the color and patterning of Jaipur’s Durbar Hall.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .

Spokane Public Schools bans Border Patrol agents from entering schools

In an unusually well-attended Wednesday meeting, the Spokane School Board unanimously revised its policy barring Border Patrol access to schools.

The revision serves as a clarification to existing policy, Spokane Public Schools officials said, with added language explicitly preventing staff from allowing immigration officials to enter campuses, unless the superintendent says otherwise.

“It’s to clarify and make it just very clear that Border Patrol should not be in our schools,” Board President Nikki Otero Lockwood said at the Feb. 21 school board meeting at the policy’s first reading.

The revision stems from conversations between district administration and members of the group Latinos En Spokane, an advocacy group that supports the Latino community, who have since 2018 called for such a proposal. Seeing a Border Patrol officer in their school can be traumatizing for Latino or immigrant students, said Jennyfer Mesa, executive director of Latinos En Spokane.

“They could be targeted as immigrants, as having an accent, or if they’re asked for something about their parents, you know, that could be a stressful situation,” Mesa said. “These fears, these stressors, create PTSD for students and families who have experienced whether it’s family separation, whether it’s worries about another family member.”

Mesa said agents can spark tremendous fear and anxiety in students.

“Especially having an agent at your safe space – schools are safe spaces for students and families,” Mesa said. “This is where we come to learn.”

Existing school policy states that Border Patrol’s work doesn’t intersect with schools’ work.

“This is because the district’s obligation to educate the children residing within its borders is not diminished by the children or parents’ immigration status,” the policy states.

The board on Wednesday approved additions, which state in part that staff will not “collaborate with immigration enforcement agencies or share information that could put a student’s security at risk.”

The policy also bars immigration agents as guest speakers in a classroom, Lockwood said.

If a teacher requested a Border Patrol agent as a guest speaker, “they would see related to the policy that our position is that we don’t have Border Patrol in our schools, so it would go back to the staff member who requested it as ‘No,’ ” Lockwood said in an interview Monday.

No one testified against the proposal at the meeting Wednesday. But former Eastern Washington U.S. Attorney Jim McDevitt questioned the new policy. Presentations delivered by police or immigration agents can be educational and can also serve to deter crime among kids in the audience, said McDevitt, who was involved in many Border Patrol cases during his tenure from 2001 to 2010.

He called the ban “obnoxious.”

“That’s troubling, it’s marginalizing a very valuable function in our society and it sends the wrong message to the kids and the parents,” McDevitt said. “It sends a message that we don’t want legitimate law enforcement to be able to do their job on our campuses.”

Visits to schools can also serve as recruitment tools for these agencies, McDevitt said. Officers can inspire students to pursue careers in law enforcement.

Superintendent Adam Swinyard clarified that parents of students who work for the Border Patrol could still engage in their child’s education while off the clock.

“The policy prohibits their involvement in our school if they’re operating on official capacity,” Swinyard said. “If they’re operating as a parent, then parents have the right to engage in their kids’ school experiences as a parent, but not operating in their official capacity.”

Recent Border Patrol visits to schools have sent waves of anxiety through affected Latino communities, Mesa said, laden with PTSD from past interactions with Border Patrol and the association with separating families and racial profiling.

In 2018, concerned parents notified Latinos En Spokane of uniformed Border Patrol agents holding story times at Holmes Elementary and began their push to prevent similar occurrences.

In a second “tone-deaf” incident in December, another uniformed officer visited the Spanish Immersion Language School to deliver a presentation about immigrants and refugees, sending waves of fear among school families concerned their children may have shared potentially incriminating information about their family or friends’ immigration status, said Mesa, who is a parent at the immersion school. The visit was a protocol breach, district officials said, and not in line with existing policy from the time.

Both visits raised Mesa’s concerns, prompting meetings with district administrators and a 780-signature petition to ban immigration agents on school campuses.

Wednesday’s revision was the result of these conversations, Mesa said. Attendees nearly filled seats in the boardroom, some carrying neon signs proclaiming “Ban ICE” and “students should feel safe, not feel fear, anxiety and trauma in the classroom.”

Several attendees spoke in support of the revisions. ICE stands for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Coming from a Mexican background,” Ami Deras said, “when I saw officers when I was young, I thought they were going to arrest my parents, arrest my cousins because of the color of my skin or maybe my accent.”

Mesa said she’s also urging the district to enhance its training and professional development to consider the lived experience of immigrants in a more culturally competent way, as well as continuing conversation with advocacy groups like Latinos En Spokane, who could contribute to these trainings, she said.

In her advocacy work, Mesa said she sees firsthand the need for explicit, divisive policy and clear communication from leadership to prevent a repeat of policy lapses like at the Spanish Immersion Language School in December.

“Just today, we got a report of two people who were picked up by ICE,” Mesa said. “They were on their way to work. They were in Spokane Valley. They get picked up. That’s community members that disappear and we need to track them down and try to get them back with families. This is happening every day in Spokane. We don’t need it to happen in our schools.”

The Evening

Biden urged trump to join him in cracking down on the border.

Also, Putin threatened nuclear war over NATO intervention. Here’s the latest at the end of Thursday.

President Biden wearing a baseball cap speaks to border officials in Brownsville, Texas.

By Matthew Cullen

President Biden and Donald Trump both traveled to southern Texas today to use the border with Mexico as a backdrop for their push to convince voters that they would best handle the recent surge in migrants crossing into the U.S.

The day offered a split-screen preview of a debate that is likely to continue in the months leading up to November’s presidential election. Recent polls showed voters’ views on immigration have shifted to the political right, including one that found that Americans are most likely to say that immigration is the country’s top problem.

Biden, who has in recent months changed his tune on immigration and begun to favor a border crackdown, visited Brownsville. He met with border officials there and delivered a speech criticizing Republicans for blocking a recent bipartisan immigration bill and daring Trump to team up with him in tightening border security.

“We can do it together,” Biden said. “You know and I know it’s the toughest, most efficient, most effective border security bill this country has ever seen. Instead of playing politics with the issue, why don’t we just get together and get it done.”

Trump, who was more than 300 miles away in Eagle Pass, delivered a darker address, highlighting what he called an “invasion” of migrants into the U.S. “This is like a war,” Trump said, repeating the anti-immigration message that has been central to his political identity since he first ran for president.

In related news, a federal court blocked a Texas law that would allow police to arrest migrants who cross from Mexico without authorization.

Many Gazans were killed and wounded in a chaotic scene

Scores of Palestinians in Gaza City who had been waiting for a delivery of food from a convoy of aid trucks were killed or injured before dawn this morning. The details of what happened remain unclear, with Gazan and Israeli officials offering starkly different accounts .

An Israeli official said thousands of people had surrounded the trucks in an attempt to take supplies, leading to a deadly stampede. Israeli soldiers opened fire “only in face of danger when the mob moved in a manner which endangered them,” an Israeli military spokesman said. The Gazan health ministry described the scene as a “massacre” in which more than 100 people were killed and 700 wounded. A hospital in Gaza City said it had treated 100 people with gunshot wounds. We talked to a witness about what he saw .

In related news, the Gazan health ministry reported that the war’s death toll had surpassed 30,000 people . Experts say the tally is most likely an undercount.

Putin threatened nuclear war over NATO intervention

President Vladimir Putin used his annual state-of-the-nation speech today to threaten NATO countries with the prospect of nuclear conflict if they intervened more in the war in Ukraine.

His threat came in response to comments by France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, who raised the possibility this week of sending troops from NATO countries to Ukraine. Macron’s remarks drew quick rebukes from other Western officials, who have ruled out such deployments, and analysts say the prospect is unlikely.

In related news, U.S. officials said they are considering tapping into military stockpiles to provide Ukraine with badly needed weapons, even though the government has run out of money to replace those munitions.

The Smokehouse Creek fire is now Texas’s largest ever

Firefighters from all over Texas were deployed to the state’s Panhandle in an effort to contain the Smokehouse Creek fire — the largest of several burning in the area — before higher winds and hotter, drier air make the battle even more challenging over the weekend.

The fire has burned at least 1,075,000 acres , more than five times the size of New York City, making it the largest in the state’s history. As of this afternoon, it was just 3 percent contained.

TIME TO UNWIND

A second chapter of ‘dune’.

It has been three years since Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious movie adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction opus, “Dune,” premiered. Now he’s back, directing Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in “Dune: Part Two,” which arrives in theaters this weekend and manages to be even bigger and more far out than the first film. Our critic Manohla Dargis called it “a blast.”

But adapting a novel that’s over 500 pages is a feat only slightly less daunting than riding a monstrous sandworm across the desert. Luckily, my colleague Danielle Dowling is here to explain what you need to know about the “Dune” universe.

Richard Lewis is remembered for his neurotic wit

A month before his death this week at 76 , the comedian Richard Lewis called up my colleague Melena Ryzik. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few years ago, but he remained as funny and sharp as ever. It was the kind of derisive comedy that made Lewis famous, and got him credited with coining — or at least popularizing — the phrase “the (blank) from hell.”

“He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest,” said the “Curb” creator Larry David, who was best frenemies with Lewis .

ONE LAST THING

Celebrating leap day.

My colleague Remy Tumin, who wrote a previous iteration of this newsletter, can celebrate extra hard today. That’s because she is one of the 0.1 percent of Americans who were born on Feb. 29 — which arrives only once every four years to keep the winters in the winter .

It might sound unfortunate to have a birthday only twice a decade, but Remy wants you to know that she and other leap-day babies consider it special . They’ve heard all of your jokes about still being school-age, but few other days have such cultural significance. Even Superman was said to be born on a leap day.

Have an exceptional evening.

Thanks for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow. — Matthew

We welcome your feedback. Write to us at [email protected] .

An earlier version of this newsletter stated incorrectly the percentage of Americans born on Feb. 29. It is approximately 0.1 percent, and not 0.001 percent.

Border Patrol Tactical Unit marksman fires round fatally injuring armed man assaulting migrants in the Otay Mountains

On March 3, 2024, U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) Border Patrol agents were conducting operations in the Puebla Tree area of the Otay Mountains, approximately five miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. BORTAC was actively monitoring this area – where there is a paved road winding through the mountains – because of recent reports of armed robberies and assaults targeting groups of migrants crossing into the United States. A small group of BORTAC agents was concealed approximately 70 yards north of the border along a ravine near the paved road. Additional BORTAC agents, including a precision marksman, were positioned on high ground approximately 275 yards away, providing overwatch of the area.   Based on witness interviews conducted by investigators, a group of migrants was walking on the paved road in the early morning hours when they were approached by four individuals, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun. According to the witnesses, the armed individual demanded money from the group, racked his pistol to chamber a round, and pointed the weapon at one of the migrants. Then the migrants heard a single gunshot and observed the armed individual fall to the ground. The migrants informed investigators they did not know from where the gunshot was fired.    The BORTAC agents involved in the incident reported a similar description of events. They observed the armed individual threaten the migrants, chamber a round, and point a gun at one of the migrants – at which time the BORTAC precision marksman fired one round, striking the armed individual. No other injuries were reported.   At approximately 6:59 a.m., BORTAC agents broadcast over service radio that shots had been fired. At approximately 7:05 a.m., a BORTAC supervisory Border Patrol agent broadcast a request for medical assistance from Border Patrol agent Emergency Medical Technicians and Emergency Medical Services via service radio.    At approximately 7:16 a.m., a Border Patrol agent EMT and another Border Patrol agent (a former EMT) arrived on scene and performed a medical assessment of the armed individual. The agents located a gunshot wound and performed life saving measures and rotated roles during multiple sets of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes. Investigators recovered a handgun near the wounded individual.   At approximately 7:59 a.m., San Diego County Fire Authority EMS personnel arrived at the scene of the shooting and assumed control of providing emergency medical care to the wounded individual. They applied an intravenous line and continued CPR on the wounded individual.

At approximately 8:14 a.m., after telephonically consulting with local EMS at the scene of the shooting, a physician at Sharp Grossmont Hospital (located in La Mesa, Calif.) pronounced the wounded individual deceased.    On March 5, 2024, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased individual. The autopsy report is pending. The deceased individual was subsequently identified as a 32-year-old male citizen of Mexico. Following this encounter, agents apprehended 17 migrants in the area. However, three individuals who were possibly armed absconded from the area and fled into Mexico.    In accordance with the May 25, 2022, Executive Order on Advancing Effective Accountable Policing and Criminal Justice Practices to Enhance Public Trust and Public Safety, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is committed to expeditiously releasing the body worn camera footage of this incident as soon as is appropriate to do so and without impacting the ongoing law enforcement investigations. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility are currently investigating this incident. CBP’s National Use of Force Review Board will review this incident at the conclusion of the investigation. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General has been notified.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the comprehensive management, control, and protection of our nation’s borders, combining customs, immigration, border security, and agricultural protection at and between official ports of entry.

10% of travelers have had their medicines confiscated. Here's how you can avoid it.

wallpaper borders travel

It’s always a good idea for passengers to keep medicine in their carry-on bag, but even that doesn’t guarantee they’ll get to their final destination with all their prescriptions.

According to a January survey of 1,245 Americans from BuzzRx , a prescription discounting service, one in 10 Americans have had their medicine confiscated while traveling, either by the Transportation Security Administration or by border officers abroad.

“Before traveling, it’s imperative to research the destination, especially if traveling internationally, about what their medication requirements are,” Ricardo Rodriguez, a member of BuzzRx’s data team, told USA TODAY.

Rodriguez explained that some U.S. medications are not approved in other countries, which could make traveling with them complicated. “Discussing the issue with your provider will probably be the best thing to do.”

Medicine is almost equally likely to be confiscated on domestic trips, with 41% of respondents saying it has happened to them, as on international trips, with  44% of respondents saying they’d experienced it.

Planes carry medical kits. Here's why you may not rely on them in an emergency.

For domestic trips, the TSA recommends keeping your prescriptions in their original, marked containers. TSA regulations allow travelers to bring more than 3.4 ounces, the usual limit for liquids, if their medicine comes in liquid form.

Data from BuzzRx shows that one in nine travelers have had to cancel their trip after having medicine confiscated at the airport, and one in six have been able to replace their meds but had to pay full price for the prescription.

More than 50% of the respondents to BuzzRx’s survey said having their medicine increased their stress and anxiety around a trip, and 18% said it forced them to cancel some trip activities.

Anxiety medication was the most common type to be confiscated, followed by sleep aids and over-the-counter remedies.

Rodriguez said travelers should reach out to their doctor to see about getting confiscated medicine replaced, or consider seeking help from a consulate or embassy if the issue happens abroad.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

wallpaper borders travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

wallpaper borders travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

wallpaper borders travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

wallpaper borders travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

wallpaper borders travel

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
