Today early morning, meet your car and proceed for Ashtavinayak tour. Start your day by visiting VaradVinayak Temple – Mahad. The idol of this temple is “Swyambhu” or self-originated. The idol is east-facing. There are four elephant sculptures in the four directions of the temple. There has been a “Nandadeep” or oil lamp burning since 1892 continuously. Further proceed to Pali for Ballaleshwar Temple. This temple is situated between the famous fort Sarasgad and the river Amba. The original temple was wooden that was renovated in 1780, and a stone temple was built. It is East-facing, and every morning, sun rays fall on the Ganesha idol during the daily worship. There is a huge bell in the temple, gifted by ChimajiAppa, the brother of Bajirao I, after his victory over the Portuguese. In the evening, proceed to visit Ranjangaon Mahaganpati Temple. This temple was built by Peshwas. It faces towards the East, and there is a big and beautiful entrance gate. The temple is designed in such a way that morning rays of the sun fall on the idol during the Dakshinayana. Overnight in Pune.
Note: Prices are not applicable during festivals events and long weekends.
After breakfast, proceed to visit Chintamani Temple at Theur. This temple is one of the largest and the most famous temples amongst the eight. The temple has been existing since ancient times. It is huge and made of stone. The idol is “Swayambhu,” which means self-generated. There are no distinct parts of the body except the head. There are diamonds studded in the eyes. Proceed to Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhatek. This temple is located in the Karjat Taluka of Ahmednagar. The temple stands on a small hill called Siddhatek. The main idol is around three feet tall, and it is the only idol amongst all eight with the trunk at the right side. It makes Siddhivinayaka special. It is known as Siddhivinayaka because Bhagwan Vishnu acquired Siddhi (special powers) here. It is also believed that since the god fulfills every wish of his devotees, he is called the Siddhivinayaka. Further proceed to Moreshwar Temple at Morgaon. The temple has four entrance doors in four directions, but the main entrance is North-facing. There is also a huge sculpture of Nandi (Bull) facing Bhagwan Ganesha, which is an unusual thing. Normally, Nandi is present in Shiva temples. Proceed to Jejuri to worship God Khandoba. Jejuri's Khandoba is a clan-deity of many herding (Dhangar) and farming families of the Maharashtra and Deccan region. In evening, visit Prati Balaji Temple at Narayanpur. It is copy of the real Tirumala Venkateswara Temple. Overnight in Pune.
Pune – Junnar (1 Night) (Approx. 3 Hrs 35 Mins, 92 Kms)
After breakfast, proceed to Prati Vaishnodevi Temple at Pimpri. It is copy of the real Vaishno Devi Temple, Jammu. If you wish to attend the aarti, it happens at 6 am in the morning and between 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm every evening. Proceed to Ozar for Vighneshwar Temple. The main idol is east facing. There are diamonds in the navel and forehead and ruby in the eyes of the idol. Later proceed to Lenyadri for Girijatmaj Temple. It is located in the Ganesh Caves or “Ganesh Lene” in the Junnar taluka. The temple is located in the 7th Cave amongst the 30 caves. The caves are at the height of 100 feet from the plains. Ashtavinayaka Tour Packages
There is nothing more gratifying than visiting these temples during travel to Ashtavinayak and allowing yourself to be astounded by the sheer depth and breadth of the Hindu religion and faith. These are merely four of the eight most significant Ganapati temples in India.
List of Ashtavinayaka Darshan Tour Packages
Tour packages to ashtavinayak.
Definition of the Ashtavinayaka is challenging. In Sanskrit, the term literally translates to "eight Ganeshas" and refers to the eight different Ganesh statues that are kept in a variety of highly revered and significant temples throughout the towns of Maharashtra state. Every temple is distinct in its own way, and every idol has a different set of myths and traditions. It is just as intriguing to learn about these myths and tales as it is to actually visit one of these temples. With the Ashtavinayak Darshan package, see these temples.
You are well on your way to obtaining ultimate enlightenment if you visit all eight of the Ganapati statues along the Ashtavinayak trail! The idols in each of these eight temples are referred to as "Swayambhu" effigies, which indicates that they were discovered naturally formed and were not purposefully carved!
Ashtavinayak Darshan Tour Package
The temple in Morgaon is the most significant of the eight. This religious building, often known as the Mayureshwar Ganpati temple, is supposed to have been built during the Bahmani era and is located in the centre of the village, as is typical of most ancient temples. The villagers built four minarets around the temple to make it appear to be a mosque in order to protect it from Mughal ruler attacks. The Nandi perched right outside the temple's entrance is what makes it special; typically, we only see Nandis in front of Shiva temples. Remember to include this in your schedule for your tour to Ashtavinayak.
In its own way, the Siddhivinayak temple in Siddhatek is equally exceptional. Out of the eight temples, it is the only one where the Ganesh deity has its trunk placed to the right rather than the left. You will need to make a full circle of the hillock the temple is situated on to complete one pradakshina of the building, which will take you about 30 minutes to complete. This particular right-trunked Ganesha is reputed to be particularly severe in his views and demands of devotees. With the Ashtavinayak tour, see these temples.
Tour Packages to Ashtavinayak Darshan
Ballaleshwar Ganpati is buried in Pali, the place where legend has it that Lord Ganesh intervened to prevent a little boy named Ballala from being killed by the locals. The boy's fervent pleas and devotion brought the God to his aid. This temple's central deity resembles the shape of the mountain that is located behind it in some way.
The eight Shrines of Lord Ganesha located in the Indian state of Maharashtra are referred to as Ashtavinayaka Temples. The pilgrimage known as the Ashtavinayaka Yatra travels to and through these eight revered Ganesha shrines in and near the Pune District of Maharashtra. Six of these eight temples are in Pune, and two are in the district of Raigad.
Travel to Ashtavinayak
Before worshipping any other deity, Lord Ganesha, the elephant-faced God, is typically offered first. Lord Ganesh, the Hindu deity who is adored and worshipped, is also known by the name "Vinayaka." The worshippers of Lord Ganesh are under his protection. Eight effigies that were discovered in the middle of the wilderness and sculpted by nature have been kept in temples that were built there centuries ago. These "Swayambhu" effigies are the well-known "Ashta Vinayak," which are now revered idols.
The Sanskrit word for "eight Ganeshas" is Ashtavinayaka. At least once in their lifetime, everyone should travel to Maharashtra to see the Ashtavinayak. In Maharashtra, there are eight Ganesha temples that are associated with numerous puranas and other tales. Shastra states that you must first travel to Moreshwar in Moregaon. After that, travel to Moregaon once again before stopping at Siddhatek, Pali, Mahad, Theur, Lenyandri, Ozar, and Ranjangaon.

Siddhivinayak – Siddhatek
Shri siddhivinayak – siddhatek.
Siddhatek is situated on the banks of River Bhima in the Ahmednagar district. The temple facing towards the north, and built during the Peshwa period is dedicated to Siddhivinayak Ganapati.
Air : The nearest Airport is Pune (99 Km). Rail : The nearest rail head is Daund (20 Km), on the Mumbai – Solapur section. Road : Siddhatek is well connected by road. It is 269 Km from Mumbai. There are frequent bus services from Pune and nearby towns/cities.
Religious Importance God Vishnu is supposed to have vanquished the asuras Madhu and Kaitabh after propitiating Ganesha here.
This is the only murti of these eight with the trunk positioned to the right.
It is believed that the two saints Shri Morya Gosavi and Shri Narayan Maharaj of Kedgaon received their enlightenment here.
The temple is North-facing and is on a small hillock. The main road towards the temple was believed to be built by Peshwa’s general Haripant Phadake. The inner sanctum, 15 feet high and 10 feet wide is built by Punyashloka Ahilyabai Holkar. The idol is 3feet tall and 2.5feet wide. The idol faces North-direction. The stomach of the murti is not wide, but Riddhi and Siddhi murtis are sitting on one thigh. This murti’s trunk is turning to the right. The right-sided-trunk Ganesha is supposed to be very strict for the devotees. To make one round (pradakshina) around the temple one has to make the round trip of the hillock. This takes about 30 minutes with moderate speed.
Peshwa general Haripant Phadake lost his General’s position and did 21 Pradakshina around the temple. On the 21st day Peshwa’s court-man came and took him to the court with royal honor. Haripant promised the God that he will bring the stones of the castle which he will win from the first war he will fight as the general. The stone pathway is built from the Badami-Castle which was attacked by Haripant soon after he became the general.
This temple is situated off the Pune-Solapur highway about 48 km from the town of Srigonda in Ahmadnagar district. The temple is situated next to Bhima river. On Pune-Solapur railway, Daund Railway station is 18 km from here.

Second Temple on the AshtaVinayak Tour of Lord Ganesh.
This temple of Lord Ganesh forms part of the Ashtavinayak circuit and is about 100 km from Pune. It is actually located in Ahmednagar district, about 20 km from Daund town. The route from Pune is via the Sholapur highway (NH9), via Yevat, Chauphula and Patas. At Patas you have to take a left turn towards Daund town and travel for another 20 km till you reach the Bhima River Bridge. The Siddhatek temple is clearly visible across the bridge. There is ample vehicle parking near the temple, located on the banks of the river. Siddhatek village is a typical Maharashtrian farmer’s village with a lot of fertile green fields, mostly sugarcane, next to the river. The temple is located on a small hillock and looks very beautiful. It is surrounded by small shops and eateries serving sugar-cane juice and the rustic meals that the farmers love to eat (zunka bhakri). The Ganesh idol here was bigger than the one at Morgaon, and had a trunk curving to the right. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctum so we could not get an image of this beautiful one. There is a paved track around the temple so after darshan inside we did a ‘parikrama’ around it. We also visited the ‘Bhakta Niwas’, a lodge for the devotees, but found it to be in an abandoned and decrepit state. We then decided to have lunch at ‘Siddhivinayak Restaurant’, where we were served a rustic thali lunch which consisted of zunka bhakri, potato bhaji, rice, dal and a few chopped onions. It was 3.30 pm and we were very hungry so we relished it. We had a good darshan of the Lord Ganesh, and a good experience of the rustic village life of Siddhatek, and returned home safe and sound with his blessings.
From the Mayureshwar Ganpati Darshan we moved to Siddhatek via Daund for darshan of Shree Siddhivinayak Ganpati. We were a bit surprised to see a road sign showing Karjat quite close but the driver informed us that this Karjat was another Karjat Taluka in Ahmednagar District and not the one on way from Pune to Mumbai. We crossed the bridge over the river Bhima and could see the village of Siddhatek on a small hillock and the spire of the Shree Siddhivinayak temple was visible from a distance. We stopped in the slightly uneven surface parking area which we felt could have been better. The feeling was very rustic and undeveloped. Add the acacia trees and the picture of a rural village of Maharashtra settles in the mind. Passing through the vendors of snacks and cane juice we go forward and can see the entrance and in the distance the temple which has a big rectangular courtyard in front with shops on both sides. After buying the flowers, garlands and sweets for offering along with the Ashtavinayak Puja Coconut we went in and had darshan of Shree Siddhivinayak. Hopefully he would grant us Siddhi( and Riddhi and all else that is required) and help us in vanquishing our foes, enemies in the form of difficulties and problems in various areas of life like work, career, finances, expenditure, losses, school, education, livelihood, health, prestige, wealth, personal relations, and help me and family gain our rightful place in society, city, state, country, earth, the world and the universe. An event to note was that one visitor had asked an old woman sitting near the side of the steps leading to the the main temple and making garlands of flowers, to look after her slippers. On return from the darshan she wanted to give a rupee to the old lady but she refused. The visitor insisted to give but she did not take. This showed that the old woman was a true devotee of Shree Siddhivinayak and only looking forward to what little she could earn from her work of making and selling garlands of flowers to visitors. And we felt respect for her trying to earn even at that old age and not waiting for alms.
As part of our ashtavinayak darshan, we next reached Siddhatek from Moregaon. The location is at a distance of approx 90+ km. The Ganesha idol here has his trunk turned to the right, unlike other where the trunk of Ganesha is left. Also was informed that its only idol, of the other in this circuit, where the trunk is turned to right. The darshan was smooth and divine. There are shops lining the pathway to the entrance, one can buy plastic modak moulds, or get refreshments like vadapav, tea, coffee or sugar cane juice Our next destination - PALI
One of the 8 vinayaka temples. The temple is on the banks of river Bhima. The temple was little crowded. In the sanctum there is a huge Ganesha with his trunk turned to the right. Prasadam is sold in the temple. There are shops lining the pathway to the entrance, one can buy plastic modak moulds. Plenty of sugar cane juice sellers with their crushers making lot of noise.
Last Visited : July 2014. How to Reach: We reached by Two wheeler from Kothrud Depot to Moreswar Around 75 KM away & it took around 2 hrs. Then from Moreswar to Siddhatek @ 65 KM & approx another 2 hours, Situated on the banks of river Bhima, Siddhatek lies in Karjat taluka of Ahmednagar district. Site Review : The Ganesha icon here is with his trunk turned to the right. Usually, the trunk of Ganesha is depicted turned to his left. It is believed that the right-trunked Ganesha is very powerful, but difficult to please. This is the only Ashtavinayaka shrine where the deity has his trunk to the right. Traditionally, an icon whose trunk is to the right is named "Siddhi-Vinayaka", the giver of siddhi. The temple - constructed in black stone - faces north. The temple has sabha-mandapa (assembly hall) of black stone and another sabha-mandapa, which is a later addition. The threshold of the main shrine has a small demonic head sculpture. The temple also has a Nagarkhana. Historical Information: The original temple is believed to be built by Vishnu, however it was destroyed over time. Later, a cowherd is believed to have had a vision of the ancient temple and found the icon of Siddhi-vinayaka. The cowherd worshipped the deity and soon others came to know of the shrine. Peshwa's Senapati (commander of Army) Haripant Phadke came to Siddhivinayaka on loosing his designation. He performed 21 days Anushthan (ceremony to propitiate God). Accordingly he vowed to circumnavigate Shree Siddhivinayaka 21 times in a day continously for 21 days. Exactly on 21 st day Peshwa's messenger came to Siddhatek and took Haripant Phadke to Pune honourably. According to shastra, the Darshana of the Eight Deities is taken in following order- *1* Mayureshwar of Moregaon *2* Siddhivinayak of Siddhatek *3* Ballaleshwar of Pali *4* Varadavinayak of Mahad *5* Chintamani Temple, Theur *6* Girijadmaj of Lenyandri *7* Vighneshwar of Ozar *8* Mahaganapati of Ranjangaon ........and then back to *Mayureshwar of Moregaon. Additional Observation: The idol is swayambhu, 3 feet tall, facing north with his trunk turned right. Idol is Gajmukh, however beilly of the idol is not big. Riddhi & Siddhi are sitting on one lap of Vinayaka. Face is very calm and serene. The pradakshana (circumnavigation) of the God is said to very fruitful. Localities & Food : Wheat & Sugarcane fields are seen every where. Small houses covered with grass & walls made up of mud is the speciality of this area. A common place for devotees. You can keep your shoes to a vendor from which your buying your offerings. Both Inside & outside there are several food / tea / coffee / Bada pav / Pakora stalls. Hotels : NA Contact Details: Daily open between 4:30 AM to 9:15 PM.

Ashtavinayak Temples near Pune: A Pilgrimage steeped in folklore
- Post author: Shraddha

Visiting Ashtavinayak Temples is a popular pilgrimage tour near Pune. This is a spiritual journey of visiting 8 different Hindu temples, having 8 different forms of God Ganesha. These temples are located at 8 different places all around Pune city in the state of Maharashtra, India. The idols in these temples are said to be Swayambhu . This means nobody installed these Ganesha idols. They were found to be formed naturally. And later temple structures were built around the idols.
Trip Highlights: The savage monkeys at Lenyadri caves snatched the coconut which is the Prasad or offering of the entire pilgrimage. As one monkey snatched it out of my hands, I could see 8-10 more monkeys coming down towards me from the hill above. I still managed to snatch it back from the hands of the monkey near me. Thankfully the local guys carrying palanquins arrived at that moment and drove away all the monkeys.

Ashtavinayak Ganpati Names List and details of the tour
The Ashtavinayak Ganpati names list in the correct sequence is as follows:
- Mayureshwar Temple, Morgaon – मयुरेश्वर मंदिर, मोरगाव
- Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhatek – सिद्धिविनायक मंदिर, सिद्धतेक
- Ballaleshwar Temple, Pali – बल्लाळेश्वर मंदिर, पाली
- Varadvinayak temple, Mahad – वरदविनायक मंदिर, महाड
- Chintamani Temple, Theur – चिंतामणी मंदिर, थेऊर
- Girijatmaj Temple, Lenyadri – गिरीजत्माज मंदिर, लेन्याद्री
- Vighneshwar Temple, Ozar – विघ्नेश्वर मंदिर, ओझर
- Mahaganpati Temple, Ranjangaon – महागणपती मंदिर, रांजणगाव
Among these 8 Ganesha temples – 5 are in Pune district, 2 are in Raigad district but closer to Pune and 1 is in Ahmednagar district which is also closer to Pune. Pune city is the best place to start your Ashtavinayak tour.
- The number of days required: I completed the Ashtavinayak tour in 2 days. Most of the tour operators complete it in 2 days over the weekend. That makes 4 Ganesha temples per day. You can also do this pilgrimage slowly over 4 days, with 2 Ganesha temples per day. Some even do it over a period of 8 days, with 1 temple per day. There is old folklore that if you can complete all the temples in 1 day ie. 24 hours, your wish will definitely come true.
- Best time to visit: The best time to visit is any off-season. There are massive queues for entry and darshan almost all around the year. So, in order to avoid the crowds, I visited in the Diwali of 2019. And I found no queues at almost all the temples.
- Distances covered: If you start from Pune and complete this tour in the exact sequence mentioned below, it is a journey of around 840 km.
- Transport: There are various tour operators providing pre-planned itinerary and the pick and drop facility. But I would suggest you go with your bike/car for flexibility and a better experience. You can stop for snacks at small huts among the mountain ghats, and also include one or two more places in the trip.
- Where to stay in Ashtavinayak: Depending on your itinerary, you can plan to stay at any of the Ashtavinayak temples. There are various upscale hotels, as well as homestays, near every temple.
If you don’t know about God Ganesha or Ganapati, you can first read the information at the end of this blog post. Even if you know about him, you should still find it interesting to read. I have also mentioned information about the Ganesh festival celebrated in India at the very end.
I have included the images of the ‘Kalas’ or ‘Dome’ or ‘Steeple’ of the temple. In Hindu faith, even if you see the top of the temple called ‘Kalas’ in Marathi or the Steeple of the temple, it is equivalent to visiting and paying respects to God. So, if you see my pictures below, it is like you have virtually visited all the temples.
The correct sequence to visit Ashtavinayak temples
There is a predetermined sequence to visit the 8 Ashtavinayak temples. The form of Ganesha at every temple has a different name and a different story or folklore behind it. Below I have listed Ashtavinayak Ganpati names and places, in the order in which they must be visited.
My experience: I went with a tour company which organises pre-planned tours from Pune city. Unfortunately, I did not check the order or sequence in which they were going to take me around Ashtavinayak temples. The tour company did take me to all the temples but in the wrong order. They just made their job simpler by taking me in an anticlockwise circle all around Pune city, instead of the real zig-zag route. So, please check before booking the Ashtavinayak tour with some tour operators. Or just go by your own vehicle. The real sequence to visit the 8 temples is given below.
Mayureshwar Temple, Morgaon, Pune
Mayureshwar temple is very close, just around 67 km away from Pune city. The name Mayureshwar is derived from the form of Ganesha sitting on a peacock. Mayur in Sanskrit translates to peacock. It is believed that Ganesha in the form of Mayureshwar killed the demon Sindhurasur at this place. The village Morgaon also gets the name from the large population of peacocks that used to live around this region. This temple has minarets around it. These were made to make it look like a mosque from a distance, to avoid constant attacks on the temple. This is the most important temple in all the Ashtavinayak temples.
There is a Nandi at the entrance of the temple. I was surprised to see the Nandi because this sacred bull is usually found outside Shiva temples. Later on, I came to know the story behind it. According to the local legend, the huge Nandi sculpture was being transported on a bullock cart to a nearby Shiva temple. The wooden cart broke down, and the Nandi landed on the ground. Since then nobody has been able to move it from this place.
There is another popular temple nearby called Jejuri temple, which you can also visit.
Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhatek, Ahmednagar
The scenery and nature around the temple are very beautiful. First, you have to cross the beautiful river Bhima on your way to this temple. The temple is located on a small hill near the river. To do one pradakshina or circumambulation, you have to go all around the hill. There is no short cut, and it takes about 15-30 minutes for doing the same. It is said that Saint Shri Morya Gosavi attained enlightenment at this place.
The Ganesha idol here has the trunk towards his right. This form of Ganesha is believed to be very hard to please, yet very powerful. This is the only idol in all Ashtavinayak who has the trunk towards his right. This form of Ganesha is called Siddhivinayak or the one who gives enlightenment. This temple is a Jagrut Kshetra, which means a place with a very powerful deity. Make sure to pray for what you want the most at this temple.
At this temple, I saw a caterpillar for the first time in my life. It had small wings which were just coming out of the cocoon. The cocoon wasn’t broken yet. In short, the caterpillar was in the process of becoming a butterfly. My first reaction when I saw it was that it’s going to die soon, and it looks so ugly. But later when I thought about it then I realised it’s actually all set to be a beautiful butterfly. This was like a sign. A caterpillar turning into a butterfly was synonymous with my stage in life at that point in time.
After completing your visit to this Siddhivinayak temple of Siddhatek, you can have lunch at the nearby town called Daund.
Ballaleshwar Temple, Pali, Raigad
This is the only temple of Ganesha where the deity is named after his devotee. The legend goes that the small children of this village of Pali used to worship rocks. They were lead by a small boy Ballal. Once they all found a huge rock and started worshipping it as God Ganesha. When the children of the town did not return home, Ballal’s father was sent to find them all. When he reached he found that all the children were busy listening to Ganesh Purana. Seeing Ballal’s father enraged, all the children ran away. Ballal was caught as he was deeply engrossed in devotion. Ballal’s father started beating him as a punishment and later tied him to a nearby tree. Then he threw the huge rock away which split into many pieces.
He left Ballal tied to a tree, wounded and starving. Ballal continued to chant the name of Ganesha. Seeing this utmost devotion God Ganesha appeared before Ballal in the form of a Saint. He untied the ropes that tied him, healed his wounds. Ballal recognised that its Ganesha in the form of a Saint. Ganesha offered to reward a blessing to Ballal. To this Ballal said, “May I always be your devotee, and may you always stay here in this village.”
Today, there is a temple of Dhundivinayak near the Ballaleshwar temple. This is that huge rock that Ballal initially worshipped along with other children. Its believed that you should first visit the Dundivinayak temple, and then the Ballaleshwar temple. I read a signboard near the shoe stands, about visiting the Dhundivinayak temple first. There are two beautiful lakes near the temple.
Varadvinayak Temple, Mahad, Raigad
The story behind this temple goes like this. Gritsamada who is the son of Indra gets cursed by his own mother that a cruel demon will be born to him. In penance, he enters the Pushpak forest and prays to God Ganesha. Pleased by his penance Ganesha gives him a boon that his son could be defeated only by the God Shiva. Gritsamada asks Ganesha to stay in this forest forever so that devotees can come here to pray and be successful. They call this the Bhadraka forest now.
The idol of Ganesha was found in the lake, which is located right next to the temple. There is an oil lamp inside this temple which is alight continuously from 1892. There’s another reason why this temple is popular among couples. It is a common belief that eating the coconut prasad (offering) from this temple on a Maghi Chaturthi, will bless couples with a son.
Chintamani Temple, Theur, Pune
This is a beautiful temple in a small village. I loved the ambience and vibe of this temple the most. The temple’s gate is small, but once inside you will realise this is the largest one among all the Ashtavinayak temples. There are many legends of how this temple came into existence. One of them is about a fight for a jewel. A saint and a demon fight for the jewel – Chintamani. Ganesha saves the saint and slays the demon. Later the saint thanks Ganesha and refuses to take the jewel back. Instead, he pleads to Ganesha to stay here forever.
According to another legend Brahma, the God of all creations comes here to meditate. God Ganesha calmed his restless mind here at this place. They named this village Theur, which means stable . Needless to say, you should try sitting here and meditating. As I mentioned earlier the vibe of this temple is amazing. I immediately felt calm when I entered it.
Saint Shri Morya Gosavi, often visited this temple for enlightenment. Moreover, this temple was often visited by the Maratha Peshwas that lived in Pune. Inside the temple is a large bell that was offered by the Peshwas to the Chintamani temple. This European bell was acquired from the Portuguese after capturing the Vasai fort in the Konkan region.
Girijatmaj Temple, Lenyadri, Pune
This is my most favourite temple of all the Ashtavinayak temples. Girijatmaj temple is located on top of a mountain. Girijatmaj translates to Mountain born . To reach the top, you have to climb some steep steps. It is a part of some rock-cut Buddhist caves of Lenyadri. Lenyadri caves are a group of 28 caves that are related to other caves near Pune like Karla, Bhaja, Bedse, etc. Girijatmaj temple is inside Cave no 7, which is said to be from the 1st century AD. The sculptures and architecture in the surrounding caves especially Cave No 6 and Cave No 14 are beautiful. But it is a bit difficult to reach inside these caves.
When I visited this temple, it was October, but for some reason, it was still raining in Maharashtra. So, there were small showers when I visited, and the surrounding area was full of greenery. The rain makes the steps very slippery. And you have to always look out for the monkeys. The monkeys here are insane thieves. They will grab your offerings or prasad and runway! And one of the monkeys even climbed up and sat on the head of one lady. It was scary yet thrilling. From the top, I could see green farmland stretching out around the temple for acres.
There is palanquins or Doli facility available for elders and disabled to reach the top. Basically they make you sit in a chair and carry you to the top.
Vighneshwar Temple, Ozar, Pune
Vighneshwar means the Lord of obstacles. The legend behind this temple is that the demon Vighnasura created havoc and troubled everyone by making obstacles and disruptions in their work and sacrifice. When the people pleaded to the Gods, they sent Ganesha to fight the demon Vighnasura. After realising it was impossible to win, Vighnasura surrendered. Since then it was decided that Vighneshwara will dwell only where Ganesha is not worshipped. Thus, in the Hindu faith, Ganesha is worshipped before beginning anything.
The temple is small and in the typical Maratha architecture. They have planted several flowering trees like Jasmine along the pradakshina path or the circumambulation trail. Two large lamp towers are located near the entrance. I could not help but imagine how grand it must have looked after lighting lamps all over these towers. There is a river near the temple named Kukadi.
Mahaganpati Temple, Ranjangaon, Pune
This is the eighth Ganesha in the Ashtavinayak temples. The area around the temple is very well maintained. You can see the grandeur of the massive, impressive arched gate in the picture above. This gate is a relatively new addition by the locals. There are 2 life-sized elephant statues on both sides of this new gate.
The actual temple is in the picture below. The form of Ganesha here is seated on a lotus. This temple and the deity here is considered to be the most powerful form of Ganesha. It is believed that the real idol of Ganesha is hidden in the basement of the temple. The real idol of the Ganesha is said to have 10 trunks and 20 arms. This is the largest form of Ganesha.
It is also a common belief among people that if you visit this temple, it is equivalent to doing the entire Ashtavinayak tour. The people who cannot make the entire journey of visiting all the 8 Ashtavinayak temples due to some reasons, just visit this temple.
There is no mistake. The Ashtavinayak yatra starts and ends with the same temple of Mayureshwar located in Morgaon. Yes, the Ashtavinayak tour is said to be incomplete unless and until you go back to the Mayrueshwar temple. You should not go back to your home unless you do this. Otherwise, the pilgrimage is incomplete.
As I did my trip with a tour operator they didn’t take me back to Morgaon for revisiting the Mayureshwar temple. I am not very religious usually, but I may make vows or ask Ganesha for favours whenever I am stuck in a tight spot or in an obstacle. I don’t really know whether God exists, but somehow making the prayers gives me confidence clears my mind from any doubts.
The Prasad of Dry Coconut
It is said that you should offer a dry coconut to the Ganesha at every temple, and later eat it as a Prasad when you reach back home. Instead of taking a separate coconut every time and carrying eight coconuts home, I took and carried only one coconut. I bought a dry coconut at Mayureshwar temple in Morgaon and then carried it with me for 2 days. I used the same coconut as an offering to God Ganesha at all the 8 Ashtavinayak temples. This is the better way of doing it, rather than carrying the weight of 8 coconuts at the end. If you are a big family visiting together then you may offer a new coconut and end up with 8 coconuts.
Ganesha or Ganapati
Ganesha is an important god in Hinduism. He is said to be the god of wisdom, who tackles problems with his intelligence first. He is also called the Vighnaharta or the one who removes obstacles and disruptions. This is the reason why Hindus first remember God Ganesha before beginning any of the important tasks. And a small prayer is made to Ganesha to take care of obstacles and disruptions. The Ganesha idol sits on the dashboard near the windshield of almost all cars and vehicles in India, for the same reason.
There is another reason why Ganesha is worshipped before all new beginnings. As per Indian Vedic knowledge, any idea first enters the subconscious mind and then into the conscious mind. An idea entering the conscious mind should be obstacle-free. If the idea enters the conscious mind full of obstacles and doubts, then the same gets converted into reality – ie. in last stage Action or execution of the idea. So before starting any new idea, first Ganesha is worshipped. The mind is freed from any doubts or obstacles. And then no problems, disruptions or obstacles arise in the execution of the idea.
Why does Ganesha have an Elephant’s head?
God Ganesha has an elephant’s head instead of having a human head. There are 2-3 stories that give the reason behind Ganesha’s elephant head. The most widely known and accepted one is as follows –
Goddess Parvati, the wife of God Shiva was bathing at lake Gauri Kund near Kailash Mountain. As there was nobody there to be a guard while bathing, she sculpted little Ganesha from bathing clays and Sandalwood. After she put life into her child, she asked him to stand as a guard while she bathed. Meanwhile, God Shiva arrived at Gauri Kund and asked Ganesha to step aside. Ganesha not knowing that Shiva is his father, and Parvati’s husband did not allow him to proceed. God Shiva was hence enraged and he beheaded little Ganesha. When Goddess Parvati arrived at the scene, she was enraged when she saw Ganesha killed by Shiva. She was about to destroy all the creations of the world when the God of all creations – Brahma stopped her.
The Shiva commanded Brahma to bring the head of the first animal he finds facing North. God Brahma set out and returned with the head of an elephant. God Shiva fixed the head of an elephant on his child’s body. And this is how Ganesha got an elephants head. If we see logically every part of Ganesha’s body gives us a message. The large ears of an elephant tell us to listen more, the small eyes show concentration, the tiny mouth gives the message of speaking less. The large trunk represents flexibility.
Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesh festival
Ganesh Chaturthi is the day when little Ganesha came to earth from Mount Kailash . From this day starts a 10 day grand festival in India called the Ganesh festival. I am writing this post during this most loved festival in India. The Ganesh festival was first started in Pune city by the freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak. It was an effort to bring the Indians together.
Now, everyone celebrating the festival brings home a small Ganesha idol each year. More idols and larger versions of Ganesha are brought in at the public pandals. This is a 10-11 day celebration which you can experience best by visiting the cities Pune or Mumbai. The dates are as per the Indian calendar, but they usually fall in August or September. In this fun-filled festival, several decorations are made or scenes are enacted by people or statues. Drum like instruments called Dhol and Tasha are played by youngsters around the city. It is almost like carnivals but even better with a spiritual twist.

Fantastic blog. Thank for sharing this wonderful website with us. I’ll share this blog with my colleagues. I’m sure this info will be useful to those who need it.
Very Informative blog. I am a senior citizen, planning to visit these places, engaging a car for two days. Could you please indicate the timings of visit at all these temples, so that we can take care of the recess / lunch – break time in our itinerary. Also, if distances are indicated from each place to place in the given sequential order, may help in planning in minimizing the travel distance and time. Thank you for sharing your experience in a detailed manner. May God Ganesha Bless you.

Ashtavinayak Yatra with Shirdi
The Ashtavinayak Yatra with Shirdi is the 3 nights / 4 days tour package takes you to the enchanting journey of visiting the religiously significant Sai Baba Temple, followed by the visit to the eight ancient holy temples of Lord Ganesha that are scattered in the nearby beautiful and scenically blessed villages of Pune, all together called Ashtavinayak Yatra. Though, they are all dedicated to one God but the idols adorning each temple are distinctly different, and so as the historical tale behind its existence. But one surprising fact that amazes the tourists is the natural emergence of all the eight temples from within the Mother earth. Ashtavinayak Roadtrip
For this day I was waiting since long to do a Ashtavinayak trip on Bike. 6 of us including me decided to execute it during our long Holiday from 2nd October 2014 to 4th October 2014. All the 8 Vinayak's are located in a proximity of Pune district, hence it was not that difficult to complete this trip in 3 days, only challenge was Road conditions and traffic which we managed to overcome without any hassles.
We started our journey from Panvel towards 1st Ganpati Ballaleshwar at Pali which is approximately 80 kms from Panvel and then headed towards Varadvinayak of Mahad which is 40 kms from Pali. Our 1st night was at Jejuri , we paid just 500 for an accommodation near Temple area at one of Pundit's house and the dinner was at Atithi hotel, Saswad junction. 3rd October was a big festival at Jejuri on occassion of Dussehra, hence visited temple early morning, the temple was decorated with flowers, it was just beautiful. Next destination, Ekmukhi Datta Mandir at Narayangaon and then Pratibalaji Mandir. We had Mahaprasadd being served at Temple as our breakfast at Pratibalaji. From Saswad to Pratibalaji the Road is just beautiful with greenery to welcome you on both the sides. After Pratibalaji, our next destination was Moreshwar at Morgaon and then Siddhivinayak at Siddhtek. Siddhtek is the only Vinayak which is a bit secluded from other vinayaks. We had our lunch at the hut nearby Siddhivinayak, the food was homely and prepared on barbeque, it was really yummy. We had to visit Chintamani at Theur , so we finished our lunch ASAP and headed towards Thur via Pune Solapur highway, which was more of helpful to cover the more distance in shorter time. We had reached Theur around 0700 PM and yet to visit one more Vinayak at Ranjangaon ,so we finished all the rituals and headed towards Ranjangaon on Pune-Nagar Road. We decided to stay overnight at the facillity of Mahaganpati's Bhakta Niwas and the price we paid was hardly 350 per room, rooms were very decent, clean and tidy. We got up early next morning to attend Kakad Aarti of Mahaganpati and started our journey toward Dehu & Aalandi, en route we also visited entrancement of Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj at Tulapur. After visiting Dehu & Aalandi we headed towards Ozar via Chakan Road till Narayangaon to visit Vighneshwar and Girijatmak at Lenyadri which is just 15 kms from Ozar. We finished all the rituals at Girijatmak at around 7 and headed towards Mumbai via Malshej ghat Road.
This epic journey will always be memorable for beautiful temples, en route mountains, lush greenery, smooth roads and for horrible night riding, traffic of Pune city.
The distance we covered was approx 900 for which we spent approx 1800 for petrol another 1500 for stay and food. This trip turned out very reasonable as our budget was around 5000.
