What to Wear to a Winery

Wine tasting always makes for a good time! When delicious wine, breathtaking views, fun people and perfect weather surround you, the last thing you want to worry about is your outfit. That is why I put together this ultimate guide on what to wear to a winery. This style guide will not only answer what to wear wine tasting but also go over many style tips, outfit ideas, what to wear during different seasons and it’s full of outfit photos!

To start, let’s review some general winery outfit style tips. These are tips that apply to all of your wine tasting outfits no matter location or season! Keep these ten style tips handy when you’re packing for your wine region adventure.

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: If you’re planning to sign up for a wine tour or have a long list of wineries you plan to visit, wear comfortable shoes. But comfortable doesn’t have to be sneakers. Instead of sneakers, wear flat sandals, wedges, loafers, or even some nice slides. Also take into consideration which wineries you will be visiting which means you might be walking in grass, dirt, gravel or cobblestone.

2. Go Hands-Free and Small with Your Purse: When you’re wine tasting, you will be walking around a lot, holding and reading brochures, tasting cheeses or chocolates, and of course, holding various wine glasses. So it’s best to wear a fuss-free bag. Also, if you carry a purse without a strap, you run the risk of leaving it behind or setting it down without keeping an eye on it. The best purse to wear to a winery is a small crossbody bag, like the super stylish Mini Marcie from Chloe , the classic Soho Disco bag from Gucci , or mini monogram crossbody from Saint Laurent.

3. Layer a Blazer or Cute Denim Jacket: If your winery outfit is looking a little simple, add a stylish layer. Depending on the season you could wear a denim jacket in the summer, a floral blazer in the spring, a long cardigan in the fall and a coat in the winter. Make sure this layer is not too bulky as you want to move freely no matter the season.

4. Go More Dressy Than Casual: Leave your leggings at home! Even though wineries are basically farms in the country, don’t think you can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and call it a day (unless of course you want to, but you wouldn’t be reading this post if you did). Opt for a little more dressy than casual. I still think that wine tasting is a pretty posh activity, so I try always to dress nice and classy. If you’re wondering how it is that you can dress classy read, How to Dress Classy – 7 Style Tips You Need to Know .

5. Low Maintenance Hair: Your wine tasting attire includes your hair so wear your hair up or style it in a way that doesn’t need maintenance throughout your wine tasting activities. If you’re planning on being out all day on the wine trail, I would suggest putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun. This way you won’t have to worry about it getting frizzy, going flat, and you won’t have to mess with it during your wine tasting tour. If I have some extra time in the morning, I’ll blowdry it, so it looks nice down.

6. Wear Chapstick: The main activity while wine tasting is drinking wine so instead of lipstick wear chapstick. You don’t want always to be checking your lipstick or re-applying when you get to the car. Keep it simple and wear chapstick.

7. Skip the Strong Perfume: You will be smelling a lot of wine trying to decipher what notes are most prominent, and you don’t want other smells interfering so skip the perfume! Not wearing perfume is also courtesy the group you’re wine tasting with and other guests in the wine tasting room or cave.

8. Wear a Pretty Print: If you need to bring some interest to your wine tasting outfit, swap a solid for a print. Instead of a solid blue dress, wear a dress with horizontal stripes like in my outfit example below. Wear a floral shirt in the spring, stripes in the summer, plaids & tartans in the fall and houndstooth in the winter.

9. Easy is Better: Don’t wear an outfit that is too high maintenance. What you wear to a winery needs to be comfortable and stylish, but remember point four, nothing too casual either.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Wear White: There’s nothing wrong with wearing white to a winery. I have worn white jeans wine tasting, just see my outfit examples below. If you know you spill a lot, then I would suggest skipping the white.

What to Wear Wine Tasting in Different Seasons

When going on a vacation to Napa Valley, there are many choices to make. You need to consider where you’ll stay, which wineries you’ll visit, the time of year you’ll go, and what you’ll pack.

Packing the appropriate wine tasting attire is not necessarily tricky; you need to consider the locations you’ll be visiting and the time of year you’ll be going.

My favorite seasons to visit wine country is spring and fall because it’s not too hot or too cold. You don’t have to worry about sweating or getting sunburned. If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley, I would suggest one of these to seasons. But let’s go over what you need to consider for each season and what to wear wine tasting in the spring, fall, summer, and winter.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Spring

The weather in Napa during the springtime ranges from the high 60s to low 70s during the day and mid to upper 40s in the morning and evening.

Napa Valley in May is chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime temperature is perfect. Perfect to me is the 70’s, so if you like it a little warmer during the day, I would recommend waiting until last spring or early summer to visit Napa Valley.

In the spring pack more sweaters than you expect. Keep the sweaters handy in your car if you don’t plan on going back to the hotel before going to dinner. It’s also useful to keep them in the car when the tasting room is too cold or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the winery patio and it’s too breezy.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer

Summer in Napa Valley is pretty warm and sunny but this is what draws so many people from around California and beyond because it’s so beautiful! The temperature in the summer ranges from 80s–90s during the day and can cool down to the mid-50s at night.

In the summer opt for light colors, pretty prints, in light fabrics. Instead of jeans, wear skirts, shorts, and dresses.

If you do want to wear pants wear chinos instead of jeans. Chinos are very comfortable because it’s not very thick and not too tight. These two things would make this wine tasting trip very uncomfortable.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Fall

September is my favorite time of the year to go wine tasting because the mornings and evenings are crisp, but not too cold, and the temperatures during the day range from the 80s–90s. It’s the end of summer but not entirely fall. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on a winery patio or deck and take in the gorgeous views.

But fall is also one of the busiest times to visit Napa Valley because it’s harvest time. Harvest in the wine regions means the grapes are getting picked from the vines and many wine enthusiasts travel from all around to enjoy harvest events and special activities. Make sure to plan accordingly.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Winter

The most significant difference before spring or fall and winter, in addition to the temperature, is the crowds. If you’ve visited Napa Valley in the busy months, you know what I’m referring to regarding the masses. The tasting room at wineries is ten people deep, and you have to make your way to the counter. In the winter Napa has an entirely different feel, it’s peaceful, quiet and you have some places all to yourself.

In terms of weather, it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. Temperatures go down into the high 30’s in the evenings and during the day are in the mid to upper 50’s. I would pack plenty of layers because it can get warm in wineries.

If you’re planning on going wine tasting in the winter here are a few things to consider.

Just like any other time of year, wear comfortable footwear. You’ll be walking and on your feet, a lot so wear flat shoes or shoes with a thick stacked heel. This type of shoe is best for days filled with wine tasting and tours.

Make sure to bring a comfortable and warm sweater. If you decide to wear a thinner sweater, then layer on a coat. But if you don’t want to lug around a large jacket wear a very warm sweater instead. In the outfit example below I wore a thick olive green turtleneck sweater. I love the oversized collar and distinct fabric patterns; it brings texture and dimensions to an otherwise simple outfit.

With the large sweater and high black boots, I wore light colored skinny jeans. Remember; the balance is critical. (Read How to Look Stylish Every day – Your 5 Step Checklist to learn more about creating a balanced outfit). The boots are thick and heavy so to balance the boots I wore jeans on the lighter side instead of charcoal or black. I also wanted the shoes to stand out, and if I had worn black jeans, you wouldn’t have even noticed the boots.

It’s best to wear thinner skinny jeans with high boots such as the ones I’m wearing because you want the boots to fit snugly around your calves. The last thing you want is your jeans bunching up around your ankles.

You might have noticed a theme in the notes I mentioned. Comfort is key. You can be stylish and comfortable; you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other.

Wine tasting outfits.

There are a variety of stylish wine tasting outfits you can wear to wine destinations such as Napa. The variation exists because of activities, weather, and destination. The two critical details that you need to make sure these outfits are stylish and comfortable.

If you’ve been wine tasting, you know that there is a lot of standing, walking, and more standing involved. You need to wear an outfit that is comfortable with these various activities.

When putting together an outfit find a middle ground. An outfit that is not too dressy but not too casual either. You’ll need to wear a wine tasting outfit that you can wear all day and smoothly transition into evening dinner if you don’t plan on going back to your hotel to change.

Neutral Wine Tasting Outfit

The first wine tasting outfit is a blend of neutrals and one gorgeous printed top. The halter top is the main piece in this look, and the olive green cargos and wedges are the shirts supporting items. The cargo pants downplay the fancy, and the wedges keep the pants looking classy. With the natural color palette, this outfit is in its perfect setting.

The blouse has a pretty nature pattern which added the right amount of interest without it being an overpowering single piece. This outfit has a delicate balance of stylish but casual which I was able to achieve with the color and fabric choices.

A neutral outfit to wear wine tasting goes perfectly with this wine country activity since it’s such a relaxing atmosphere and the landscape of most wineries are earth-toned. This outfit will also work with flats or sandals if wedges are not your favorite thing to wear wine tasting.

If you’re wondering what to wear wine tasting remember: month, location and landscape. Put together a stylish and comfortable look and bring an extra pair of shoes just in case.

Stylish wine tasting outfit.

For a stylish approach consider a striped shirtdress. In this outfit, I went with a look that was more “dressy” but still had the feel of a casual weekend look. The relaxed fit of the dress and the strips make this dress wine tasting appropriate. I know wearing heels while wine tasting is taboo, but I couldn’t help but wear those gorgeous laser cut heels. The two paired perfectly together.

I know what some of you might be thinking, “you’ll spill red wine on the white,” but take it from someone that spills a lot, you can wear white wine tasting as I mentioned in the ten style tips at the start of this post.

This shirtdress is both stylish and comfortable. All you need is a few accessories and a cute pair of shoes.

Monochrome Wine Tasting Outfit

When a lot of walking is involved consider a cute pair of sandals. Remember I said cute pair of sandals, not flip flops. Keep it stylish even though you’re toning it down. With these casual wine tasting outfits make sure you have a focus point and something that still keeps the outfit classy.

In this third outfit, the sandals were the contrasting pop of color to the blue monochrome outfit . When wearing pants and a blouse of very similar color make sure the pieces are made from different fabrics. This top is a different material and hue of blue from the pants. The shiny silk looks excellent against the muted blue chinos. The blue structured patent handbag gives this casual wine tasting outfit structure, and again it’s a different material and color from the other two blues in this outfit.

Remember when you want to wear the same colors in one outfit, select different materials with a slight change in color, that can also mean shiny. In this outfit, the pants are muted, the silk top has a sheen to it, and the handbag is shiny.

Cute Wine Tasting Attire

The last outfit is something that would work for wine tasting locations where walking on dirt would be minimal. Overall it’s a cute and casual look, and the patterned pants added some individuality, and the heels dressed it up a bit.

Since the pants are very busy, I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit neutral. I paired these patterned pants with a blouse that matches one of the colors from the pattern.

With this chiffon blouse and a basic tee in the same color, I layered the light chiffon blouse over the shirt and created an airy, pretty layered look. The pop of color in this look was the handbag and the orange heels. These colors work well together because they’re all in the warm color family. The browns and oranges with a splash of red are appealing to the eye and come together nicely.

Planning Your Trip to Napa Valley

Wine tasting in Napa is a unique experience in my list of favorite places to visit. Napa brings together so many beautiful things that I love, from good food and wine to gorgeous landscapes and a relaxing environment to disconnect from the day-to-day.

With more than 400 wineries (600+ if you count Sonoma) you are sure to find a wine that you’ll love while wine tasting in Napa. If you are limited in time, at most you’d be able to visit 15 wineries during a weekend, well maybe you could do more, but I wouldn’t advise it because you’ll get too tired or too drunk.

My advice is to do some research ahead of time and make a list of the wineries you want to visit. There are popular locations like Sterling Vineyards, Beringer Vineyards, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Castello di Amorosa. But there are smaller gems where you can maybe find the best Merlot you’ve ever had. If this is your first time visiting this wine region make sure to read my guide on The Best Napa Valley Wineries for First-Time Visitors

The style of trip you wish to experience should help determine the tasting rooms you visit. If you want an intimate visit where you get to talk to the winemakers and learn insights into what makes their wine special than I would look for smaller tasting rooms.

If you’re looking to see castles, take a ride at Sterlings ariel tram and see where the most famous wines from Napa come from then I would organize a route for the larger vineyards.

Peter and I have visited the famous wineries and the smaller ones during our wine tasting trips in Napa. This September we made an effort to visit smaller vineyards with cozier atmospheres, but we deviate by visiting Beringer Vineyards to have a tasting of there reserve wine and of course a cheese plate.

We tend to plan, but if you’re wine tasting without any specific plan that works too. You can start driving and stop at the first place that looks appealing.

I hope you now know what to wear to a winery and these style tips help you put together cute wine tasting outfits.

Winery Outfits

What To Wear To A Winery

When it comes to the dress code, what you should wear to a winery will depend on the venue you visit, the season, the weather and the occasion. Wine tasting attire is generally casual and chic clothing that looks stylish and feels comfortable for a dressy outfit. If you plan to go on a wine tour, you’ll want to pair your outfit with comfortable shoes such as heeled sandals, flats, boots, loafers or designer sneakers.

Stylish Winery Attire

Upscale wineries typically ask for slightly formal attire that’s suitable for elegant tasting rooms, while casual locations have few rules and regulations in place for visitors. If you’re visiting for an anniversary or special occasion, you might want to dress up and wear a stunning dress with classy low heels that will help you look stunning on the tour and during the wine tasting.

Cute Winery Outfits

When visiting a winery in the summer, you can style tailored dress pants, a loose blouse and strappy sandals for a modern bohemian look. Since wineries in Napa and Sonoma can get chilly, you’ll want to also pack a light cardigan, jacket or coat for extra warmth and comfort.

Beautiful Winery Attire

While some wineries may have a dress code, most venues do not require heels as a standard. For a classy smart casual outfit, you can wear adorable kitten heels or platforms to lift your look without sacrificing comfort. Alternatively, a cute pair of ankle boots with a tank top and a fit and flare skirt is perfectly retro without looking overly casual.

Casual Wine Tasting Attire

Most wineries will seat you for tastings, but you’ll still be spending several hours on your feet while tackling gravel and cobbles. For this reason, loafers, block heels, gladiators and ballerina pumps are all excellent picks for when you need to prioritize comfort.

Some popular ideas for winery attire include:

  • A midi, maxi or sweater dress
  • Tailored pants, cute skirts, shorts and jeans
  • Jumpsuits, rompers and leggings
  • A chic blouse, linen top, button-down shirt, tank top and turtleneck sweater
  • Comfortable shoes like heeled sandals, flats, boots, wedges, loafers or stylish sneakers
  • Minimal jewelry and easy-to-carry purse

Chic Winery Outfit

Spring and Summer Winery Outfits

Spring and summer winery outfits should feature lightweight materials for an effortlessly cool and comfortable style. Although elegant white outfits look stunning, you’ll want to wear loose-fitting pieces in darker jewel tones that may hide clumsy spills and allow you to enjoy cheese plates without issues. For risk-taking fashionistas, bold prints are beautiful if you want to capture a contrasting shot against the vines.

Comfortable Summer Winery Outfits

When it comes to appropriate styles, maxi and midi dresses are always solid picks that are airy and casual without looking overly urban. For a Grecian feel that’s slightly edgy, a ruffle detail sundress or a side-slit max pairs beautifully with sandals or ankle boots for bold contrast.

Stylish Spring Winery Outfit

If you’re worried about gusts of wind, tailored or paperbag shorts are trendy options that flatter most figures. For something posh, cigarette pants with a floral blouse or a slouchy knit top are simply gorgeous. If in doubt, a classy jumpsuit is a reliable all-in-one option that’s suitable for small family-owned wineries and upscale locations.

Summer Dress Winery Outfit

To finish your outfit, throw on a pair of classic hoops and a trendy wide-brim hat to protect your skin. If you’re battling fluctuating springtime temperatures or powerful air conditioning, a light denim jacket or soft knit sweater can be a useful layer.

Edgy Summer Winery Outfits

Fall and Winter Winery Outfits

Fall and winter winery outfits can feature stylish pieces like sweater dresses, pants and knitwear for a cute and stunning style that will have all eyes on you. When styling a cute wine tasting outfit, you’ll want to wear layers to create a comfortable and warm ensemble.

Winter Winery Outfit

A trusty wool coat with a tie-waist is a wonderful way to showcase your figure while keeping warm, but you can throw on an oversized pea coat, knitted sweater and charming beanie for a youthful and refreshing vibe. If you’re visiting an upscale winery, a figure-flattering sweater dress, tall boots and sleek tights will make you the queen of any tasting room.

Fall Winery Outfit

If you’re not a fan of dresses, long pants made from thick and insulating materials are classy and timeless picks that pair well with most tops. You can choose a long-sleeve blouse in a muted color for a feminine feel, but it’s worth layering a thermal top underneath to keep yourself toasty while you’re outside.

Chic Fall Winery Outfit

For the ultimate femme-fatale appearance, a matching monochromatic knitted skirt, top and coat is a striking choice that never fails to look chic and glamorous. To pull things together, throw on a lightly patterned designer scarf for a touch of contrast.

Stylish Fall Winery Outfit

To finish your look, pair your stunning winter or fall outfit with a leather crossbody bag to keep your hands free for unlimited pours. To protect your eyes from the glaring sun and add flair to your look, oversized sunglasses and delicate jewelry will push your ensemble into old-school Hollywood territory.

Wine Tasting Outfits

A midi dress is the perfect choice for a wine tasting outfit that looks sophisticated and feminine yet casual. During the summertime, it’s best to stick with flowing styles that keep you comfortable as you explore the expansive grounds. If you’re looking for something edgier, consider rocking vibrant colors or bold patterns that will instantly pop in any photograph.

Midi Dress For Winery Outfit

Pretty ruffle dresses are always chic, but you can also cater to your daring side with slits, a charming sweetheart neckline or a hint of cleavage. When it comes to footwear, keep things simple with a pair of Grecian sandals, nude ballerina flats or chunky heels.

Cute Midi Dress For Winery Outfit

When the fall weather hits, a long-sleeve midi dress made from knit or cashmere is a warm and trendy choice that always looks polished. During the wintertime, sturdy boots, black tights and a classic coat will set you up for success as you’re sipping away.

Chic Midi Dress For Winery Outfit

A maxi dress is a romantic choice for the summer months that screams upscale elegance. A typical maxi dress is made from lightweight and airy materials that make battling balmy weather a breeze. Floral patterns are pretty and feminine, but you can rock bold block colors or busy prints if you’d like to showcase your unique style or camouflage any accidents throughout the day.

Cute Maxi Dress For Winery Outfit

To complete your ensemble, try heeled espadrilles or wedges to add a bohemian twist to your look. For something more traditional, you can wear relaxed strappy sandals or thick ankle-strap heels. To keep your dress at the center of your outfit, choose low-key accessories and avoid chunky costume jewelry that might overwhelm your look.

Floral Maxi Dress For Winery Outfit

Cute Shorts and Blouse

Cute shorts and a blouse will never go out of style as they’ll keep you cool and comfortable as you trek through the sprawling vineyards. It’s best to stick with light cotton or linen materials as they’re extremely breathable and will help to wick sweat away from the body.

Shorts and Blouse For Winery Attire

Although you may be able to rock denim shorts at casual family-owned wineries, dressier paperbag, tie-waist or tailored belted styles are generally more appropriate. When it comes to your blouse, you can’t go wrong with a pastel top during springtime or a darker shade during the cooler months. Just remember to pair patterned shorts with a plain blouse and vice versa to avoid unsightly clashes.

Casual Shorts and Blouse For Winery Attire

If you’re worried about looking overly relaxed during your visit, an elegant hat, a pair of neutral mules, and timeless gold jewelry are bound to elevate any ensemble.

Denim Shorts and Blouse For Winery Outfit

Midi Skirt with Tank Top

A midi skirt with a tank top is a fashionable choice that creates an irresistible smart casual outfit. When wearing a skirt to a winery, you can choose a fitted midi to highlight your bombshell body, but flowing linen skirts or silk slip styles are more comfortable options that you can easily dress up or down. Gingham and floral skirts are adorable picks for the spring and summer months, and you can complete your look with casual slip-on mules or sandals for the ultimate in countryside chic.

Cute Midi Skirt with Tank Top For Winery Outfit

If you need to create a stylish winter outfit, pair a knitted midi skirt with nude tights, ankle boots, a slimline top and an oversized pea coat for a refined feel that incorporates several practical layers. If you’re worried about being cold but don’t want to switch out your slip skirt, a long-sleeve bodysuit can help you retain heat without sacrificing sex appeal.

Midi Skirt with Tank Top For Winery Outfit

For the ultimate fall style, combining a leather camel midi skirt, cream sweater, a textured crossbody bag and a pair of knee-high boots radiates girl boss vibes that you simply can’t beat. To pull your look together, grab a wool fedora and a soft silk scarf.

Trendy Midi Skirt with Tank Top For Winery Outfit

Jeans and Button-Down Shirt

Jeans and a button-down shirt are the perfect pieces for women who want to look modern, stylish and put-together with minimal effort. Although most wineries accept jeans, you’ll want to quickly check a location’s dress code before throwing on your trusty denim. As a rule, it’s best to wear dark wash jeans without rips as they tend to look more elegant than contemporary street styles.

Cute Jeans and Button-Down Shirt For Winery Outfit

Black skinny jeans with an off-white blouse look stunning with matching Chelsea boots, but you can also sport dark blue denim with a pastel top for a refined feel during springtime. If you’d prefer to wear flat shoes, classic mules or loafers are solid choices that won’t distract from the main event.

Jeans and Button-Down Shirt For Winery Outfit

For a retro vibe, create a double denim look with a lightweight jacket, an oversized blanket scarf and a brown suede fedora. If you’re feeling brave, elegant white jeans work well with cork wedges and a tailored button-down shirt for a corporate-chic feel that looks incredibly refined.

Cute Jeans and Button-Down Shirt For Summer Winery Outfit

Elegant Jumpsuit

An elegant jumpsuit is a stunning alternative to classic dresses or pants when the warmer weather starts to hit. For a textured touch, a sleeveless ribbed jumpsuit can add visual interest to your look during the summer. If you’d like to showcase a hint of skin around your neckline, a V-neck or light plunge detail can add pizzazz to your ensemble in seconds.

Winery Outfit with Elegant Jumpsuit

As a rule, jumpsuits are more popular during spring and summer. However, you can still rock a jumpsuit during the winter months by choosing a long-sleeved cut and throwing on a striking winter coat and a pair of elegant Chelsea boots. To keep your look cohesive, stick with neutral tones and add pops of color with a scarf, a crossbody bag and classy leather gloves.

Cute Winery Outfit with Elegant Jumpsuit

When it comes to footwear, ankle-strap wedges or short nude heels are reliable picks that will keep you comfortable. For women who prefer flat shoes, stick with ballet flats or sandals for the perfect smart-casual feel.

Stylish Winery Outfit with Jumpsuit

Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is an easy way to showcase your signature style during the cooler months, giving you scope to experiment with texture, color and accessories for a trendy and contemporary look. Camel and black are solid hues that flatter every skin tone, but don’t be afraid to rock burgundy, sapphire or emerald shades for the ultimate autumnal style.

Cute Winery Outfit with Sweater Dress

Sleek midi-style sweater dresses in neutral colors are always reliable options for most women, but you can switch things up with a shorter belted style paired with tights if you’re on the petite side. If you opt for a shorter style, bring out your inner daredevil with suede thigh-high boots in a bold shade. To keep you warm while you’re waltzing around the vineyards, throw on a stylish leather jacket, a chic designer scarf and a cute wool fedora.

Chic Winery Outfit with Sweater Dress and Boots

Chic Poncho and Leggings

A chic poncho and leggings are beautiful choices if you’re heading to a casual winery, as they promise to keep you comfortable during the transitional months while showcasing your feminine side.

Chic Poncho and Leggings For Winery Outfit

You can throw on a neutral poncho with almost any legging color but sticking with classic black leggings allows you to work with brighter accessories and textured footwear for a fun and fresh finish. To add a sophisticated sheen and exciting contrast to your outfit, pair pleather leggings with brown suede ankle boots for a modern and youthful edge that’s bound to turn heads.

Cute Poncho and Leather Leggings For Winery Outfit

If you’re choosing a deep brown poncho, a matching wool fedora will add a playful bohemian touch to your look with minimal effort. If you’d prefer a preppy feel, a pearl or plaid headband is a gorgeous option. Finish your look with vintage sunglasses and gold jewelry for ultimate Cali girl vibes.

Poncho and Leggings For Winery Outfit

Elegant Slip Dress

An elegant slip dress is a stylish choice for a tour and tasting at a winery, offering a figure-flattering and lightweight outfit for the summer. Slip dresses in light colors that feature floral patterns are always trendy options, but deep yellows, blues or reds are also standout picks that will contrast beautifully against the rows of grapes.

Chic Winery Outfit with Slip Dress

If you’re after a low-key look, rock pretty ballerina flats and a long necklace that falls to your breastbone. For a casual feel that’s chic and classy, espadrilles and a canvas tote bag are lovely additions that will lift your ensemble instantly. If you’re planning to wear a slip dress during the cooler months, switch out your flats for ankle boots and keep a roll-neck sweater and a simple pair of tights on hand.

Cute Winery Outfit with Slip Dress

Trousers and Stylish Shirt

You can wear cute pants and a stylish shirt to keep your look classy and casual, allowing you to dress it up or down depending on the occasion. Pairing white linen pants with a black tank top or wearing classic neutrals never fails to look polished. Fashionistas can choose vibrant shades to highlight their individuality.

Cute Winery Outfits with Pants and Stylish Shirt

Tailored silhouettes are the most flattering, but tie-waist pants are an excellent option for women who don’t like wearing fitted pieces. As your clothing will be the focus of your outfit, dainty jewelry, classic sunglasses and basic heeled sandals will pull your ensemble together without overwhelming it.

Wine tasting is more than just actually tasting the wine. Visiting a winery is the whole experience! Enjoy the crisp outdoor air, your favorite type of grape or fruit wine, rolling hills, and a fun afternoon with your favorite people.

Whether you’re going out with a date, a friend, or colleagues, a wine and tasting tour is something you won’t regret. It’s one of our favorite activities year-round!

But if you’re planning your wine tasting outfits for an upcoming winery tour, you might realize there just isn’t much information out there. What does one wear to a winery?

Today, we’re here to help you figure out what to wear to a winery and plan your wine tasting outfits for any future event! Read on to learn how to style your outfit, know the basic no-nos when tasting wine, and discover chic wine-tasting ensembles for every season.

How To Style A Wine Tasting Outfit

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Chic but comfortable shoes

Wearing comfortable shoes on a wine trip is probably one of the most underrated styling tips I know. Some people turn up in the prettiest shoes but the most ridiculous pairs to walk on the grass.

You should only consider wearing heels when the tasting is expected to occur inside or on concrete. Trust me – you want to be sure before choosing heels!

But if your destination is within the vineyards or outdoors in general, consider that you might be walking on dirt, gravel, grass, or cobblestone. I recommend wearing flats, sandals, loafers, or slides for a chic but comfortable look. You can sometimes get away with wedges if you’re an expert on heels.

If it has rained before your trip, expect lots of mud. Bring a pair of ankle boots or sneakers you don’t mind getting dirt on for an emergency.

Small, fuss-free purse

During a wine tasting tour, you will be strolling around and active, which means you don’t want to bring something bulky. A bulky bag is not only inconvenient but doesn’t really go with the free-flowing wine-tasting outfits look. The ideal bag you can bring is a medium purse with a sling strap that you can carry your essentials along while holding a glass of wine.

Here are some of my favorite purses for classic winery outfits.

A cute sweater or jacket

A cover-up layer is unnecessary if the weather is super hot, but something like a wool shawl can keep you cozy from the breeze while strolling around the vineyards in the colder seasons. I recommend a lightweight sweater, jean jacket, or cute shawl that goes with your look.

A light or vibrant outfit with prints & color

When figuring out what to wear to a winery, you don’t have to stay with basic and neutral colors. Most wine tasting outfits incorporate some sort of prints – check out the example photos below to see what I mean. They also incorporate a lot of pastel or French-inspired colors.  My favorite prints in winery outfits are gingham, stripes, plaids, and floral.

Undyed linen clothing *at your own risk*

If you’re not into prints and bold colors, there’s really no harm in opting for neutral and earthy colors such as undyed clothing. Undyed clothing, like linen, is airy, fresh, and stylish. Plus, it looks good in pictures – very organic and natural.

But watch out for your outfit if you have a tendency to spill drinks  or if you’ll be sitting in the grass! A winery is an  easy  place to stain your clothes.

Tips For Choosing Wine Tasting Outfits

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Aside from styling your outfit, there are some things that you need to know for a seamless wine tasting experience.

1. Put your hair up

When you’re on a vineyard tour or participating in an outdoor wine tasting, you should consider putting your hair up or bringing a clip. You will have more freedom to move around and concentrate on the wine, cheese, and food. Additionally, this keeps your hair away from the wine.

Knowing all of this is helpful so that you can prepare your hair for a bun or tied-up look before you arrive at the venue. The ponytail or messy bun look is super trendy, especially at wineries!

2. Avoid wearing lipstick

We all love lipstick, but we  don’t love lipstick stains on wine glasses. Opt for a colored chapstick or non-staining lip tink so you don’t have to keep reapplying.

3. Keep your scent neutral

Keeping your scent neutral is food and beverage tasting etiquette. Plus, no one is going to smell your perfume anyways when you’re surrounded by the scent of wine!

4. Check out the winery ahead of time

When you’re wondering what to wear to a winery, the first step should be to check out the  actual winery online. Look on Instagram or Facebook to get an accurate vibe of how casual vs. fancy the winery is. I’ve been to wineries that range from  super casual (literally a farm stand vibe) to incredibly fancy with a sit-down tasting.

While all of the wine tasting outfits we’ll go over will work great, you’ll want to dress your outfit up or down depending on the specific venue.

What To Wear To A Winery: Outfit Combinations

Here are some of our favorite winery outfits and combinations to help you figure out what to wear.

Flowy Dresses

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

One of my favorite things on a vineyard tour is to imagine myself in fairytale land and recreate the look in pictures. I make this possible by wearing a flowy maxi dress.

If the wind cooperates, you’ll love a patterned maxi dress. But really, any flowy dress makes it easy to move around and still feel like you’re on a French villa.

You can opt for loafers, sneakers, or flats for your footwear. Bring a cover-up such as a shawl or a cardigan if the weather is chilly.

The flowy dress (of any length) is the classic look for most winery outfits. I recommend starting here if you’re unsure what to wear to a winery!

Blouse & Jeans

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Jeans are easy to move in and they look casually smart with a nice blouse. My ‘nice blouse’ capsule consists of off-shoulder tops, ruffled tops, and collared button-downs.

This ensemble gives you a chic but laid-back and relaxed style with which you would want to walk around the vineyard and taste the wine. If the weather permits, you can go for open-toed sandals. A pair of loafers will do otherwise.

If you’re wondering what to wear to a winery that’s more casual, the jeans and blouse look may work perfectly for you.

A Romper or Jumpsuit

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Rompers are easy to put on and move around in. I see a romper like a dress that’s not too dressy. They look smart, casual, and classy — perfect for a day for wine tasting.

When it’s cold out, I usually wear a denim jacket or leather jacket over my romper. This completes the outfit as well. For your footwear, you can go for dainty open-toed sandals.

A romper is a great option when you’re wondering what to wear to a winery and have no idea how fancy or casual the venue is.

A midi skirt gives the same magical feel that a flowy dress can provide. Plus, anything with one can make it feel like you’re on a real vacation far away from home. While flowy dresses emulate a fairy-like vibe, midi skirts make you feel like you’re in Paris — tasting the origins of the wine. It’s a classy and elegant piece to play with as well!

While I’m a huge fan of incorporating the midi dress into my wine tasting outfits, I  also love the midi  skirt because I can style it more casual if I’m not sure what the winery looks like.

What To Wear To A Winery For Every Season

When picking an appropriate wine tasting outfit, it’s not entirely about picking the right style. It is also about considering the location, the weather conditions, and the season you’re going. Consider where you’re staying, when you’re staying, and the weather which you will be living with during your time of visit.

What To Wear To A Winery In the Spring

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Next to autumn, spring is the best time to visit wine vineyards and experience wine tasting tours with friends. It may not be harvest season just yet, but it’s the best time to plan picnics, hiking ventures, locals night, and outdoor drinking/tasting. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to style outfits based on the activities that the weather and the season permit.

It’s important to know that it can still be a little chilly outside at most wineries in the spring. A jacket, a wool shawl/scarf, or a sweater on hand is still a good idea. To keep your hands free, you can tie your sweater or jacket across your shoulder and your hips to act as a nice accent to your outfit.

For your shoes, loafers are ideal but if you can afford a bit of risk or if you won’t be strolling a lot, you can go for open-toed sandals.

For your color palette, opt for vibrant, colorful, and floral colors to match the aura of the season . Floral prints, bold patterns, and pastel colors are also one of the best go-to’s for spring .

I f you’re going for a picnic date, a nice floral picnic dress and a woven basket for lunch and snacks is a great accessories to spice up your photos. Hiking dates are also a different matter. Depending on the terrain, you will be needing good quality and dressy hiking shoes to avoid slipping. Typically, winery hikes are not as strenuous as peak/mountain hikes, so a pair of jeans can most likely work. Of course, a lightweight windbreaker or an emergency sweater can always come in handy.

Springtime is literally the perfect time to plan winery outfits: just about all wine tasting outfits have springtime patterns!

What To Wear to A Winery In Summer

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

As with all summers, summer in a wine-bearing town or city is beautiful, warm, and sunny. The temperature ranges from 80° to 90° and cools to 50° when the sun goes down.

Adjusting your clothing and adding a couple of practical (but stylish) accessories like a sun hat can do you good. While you don’t have to worry about rain as much as spring, you need to worry about the sun. Grapes love hot days!

You would want to wear something elegant and casual for group wine tours. A linen blouse or top and dressy shorts will work great. If you’re looking for a modest alternative, you can wear a maxi skirt or lightweight culottes .

If you’re going on a more intimate wine date with an S.O., you can wear something more feminine, like a midi skirt and a tank top or a flowy dress.

The last thing you’d want to wear in the summer is jeans since they can feel sticky and heavy when worn in humid weather. When choosing a summer outfit, think airy, fresh, and sunny. Since you have more freedom in the summer, footwear can either be open-toed or close-toed. For summer hikes, you can opt for walking sandals if that’s more comfortable.

You can apply the concept similar to spring outfits for the color palette. Floral, vibrant, and sunny. Personally, when I think of summer, the colors I imagine are yellows and greens. Perhaps a sunflower dress or a yellow gingham skirt – how cute!

What To Wear To A Winery In Fall

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

In most wine regions in the country, particularly Northern California, harvest season occurs during the fall. Like spring, fall is not exactly cold or hot – perfect for strolling and enjoying the outdoor breeze. Fall is also the best time to arrange picking activities if you visit a winery with a vineyard and want to get active.

If you ask me, the best time to visit a winery is during early fall, when the weather is crisp and breezy but slightly warm. And it’s my favorite time to plan winery outfits! Nonetheless, late fall is great with the layers.

For me, it’s the perfect time to dress up in gorgeous sweater dresses, burnt orange knits, and knee-high boots . We’re also about incorporating more seasonal colors like red, orange, brown, olive green, and mustard .

It depends on the month you’re going, but some cozy layers like a jacket, a knit jacket, or a wool shawl are ideal.

You should also consider the chance of rain during this time (which is highly likely). Bringing a mini umbrella or a pocketable waterproof poncho will be helpful, especially if it takes a bit of a walk from the parking area to the main vicinity. If you’re going on a tour, a pocketable windbreaker or rain jacket will be handy when the necessity arrives. To make sure, always check the weather for the day so you can prepare ahead.

Although fall is not as sunny and warm as summer, it is a great time to sit by the winery patio, taste some wines, hear the rustling of the leaves and watch a breezy sunset with a friend or an S.O. Fall makes the best, photographic views that the mind can never forget. Plus, winery outfits in the fall are just too cute!

What To Wear To A Winery In Winter

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Surprisingly, winery and vineyard visits during winter are possible! In fact, vineyards are very much alive even during this time of year.

Wineries and vineyards during winter are not like in other months. Unlike the boisterous crowd wineries usually have during summer and fall, winter visits are calmer and more peaceful. Although the weather might not be the most ideal, since it will be cold, there is nothing compared to a relaxing and memorable wine date with your loved ones. But your winery outfits should  definitely be warm enough.

On days like these, you want to wear something snug, comfortable, and stylish . Instead of puffer jackets and sports sweaters, you can go for something tailored like a long coat or a leather jacket over a knit sweater dress for your winery outfits.

I also like to wear turtle necks and midiskirts with thermal tights underneath. This gives me the opportunity to wear something flowy during this time of year. If you’re not feeling like wearing a dress, you can go for a thermal turtleneck top, a thick wool cardigan, and fitted jeans. If you’re staying in for the night, it’s better to overestimate the cold temperature than to find yourself in need of more layers in a cumbersome time.

Tip: When the weather demands layers, take the opportunity to combine varieties of texture, color, and fabric type for your wine tasting outfits.

For your footwear, opt for something with enough coverage to keep your feet from the cold. Also, skip the heels unless you’re staying inside the winery. The cobblestone walkways and muddy floors can be troublesome with the wrong footwear.

Wineries during winter are a magical and special time of year. Because of the minimal crowd, couples flock to wineries in these months.

Wine Tasting Styles for Men

When choosing what to wear to a winery, men can rely on straightforward options to ensure their attire is appropriate for the occasion. If wine tasting in Napa Valley, lean towards a more formal style. For example, choose slacks instead of jeans or a sweater rather than a flannel or jean jacket. Whereas jeans, flannel shirts, and other casual garments are suitable for wine regions in Texas, Washington, or Oregon. Read on for additional fashion advice to help men craft the perfect look for wine tasting.

Always Go with a Collar

No matter the season, men can rest assured that a collared shirt will always be in style in wine country.

Tasting Room Attire

If you’re headed to a tasting room, you’ll want to make sure you’re comfortable for whatever wine tasting experience lies ahead. For tastings where you’ll be standing at the bar indulging in a flight of wines, skip heels, wedges, or any elevated shoes since you’ll be on your feet for an extended period of time. Large, bulky purses can also be left at home to avoid unnecessarily knocking over glasses of wine or bumping your fellow tasters. For elevated wine tasting experiences, you’re likely to be seated. Opt for one of the more elegant looks mentioned above and make sure your skirt length is befitting of a seated occasion. In general, you’re likely to receive better service, and perhaps a few extra special pours, if you dress up rather than dress down.

What to Wear Wine Tasting – The Ultimate Guide

What To Wear Wine Tasting | Best WIne Tasting Outfits & Attire | Winetraveler.com

You may be wondering what to wear on your next wine tasting adventure. When planning your wine tasting outfit (especially if you’re packing a suitcase for out of town tastings) there are a number of factors to consider — it’s not just a simple day out sampling wine! You may be photographed and you should be prepared for various weather conditions. Everything from your purse to perfume makes a difference. Here’s your go-to guide for what to wear to have the perfect tasting experience .

What To Wear To a Winery…

Wine cellars and caves are typically kept cold, meaning even on the sunniest summer days, you may feel chilly. Likewise, if you’re sampling reds, tasting outdoors or strolling through vineyards, it may be hot. It could cool back down again as the sun sets. Consider layering your attire. Dressing in layers means you have the opportunity to put on or take off a scarf, coat or sweater and you’ll feel comfortable, no matter what the thermometer says.

Scarves, hats and sunglasses

Don’t forget a scarf or pashmina, which can double as a shawl or headband or be easily folded into your purse. Hats and sunglasses can also save the day (and prevent a sunburn) if you know you’ll be tasting outside.

Comfortable shoes

Wine tasting is not the right time to sport your sassiest new stilettos. No matter how chic the event, a dressy pair of flat boots, sandals, flats or at most, wedges, is a better plan. You may be on your feet for hours or going up and down stairs. Part of the tasting may involve tours or walks through grass, gardens or vineyards. Heels will put a damper on your experience, so it’s better to select something cute, but sensible.

Dressy but casual

If this seems contradicting, it’s not. It’s likely you may be snapping photos, especially if you’ve come as a couple or group, so you want to look put together, but not over the top. If your wine tasting is during the day, denim is always a great choice for a wine tasting outfit. Black is perfect for evening looks. A little bit of jewelry goes a long way. Putting a little effort and thought (ahem, guys, this one’s also for you) will ensure that later when you scroll through your photos, you’ll like what you see.

What Not To Wear To a Winery…

Strong fragrances.

Part of the wine tasting experience includes savoring and classifying the wine’s aroma. If you’ve loaded up on Chanel No. 5, you won’t be able to grasp the smell of the variety, and you may also impact the experience of others around you. Guys, this also goes for you — take it easy on that AXE Body Spray, please.

What Not To Wear Wine Tasting | Winetraveler.com

This one should be obvious, but wearing white is simply asking for disaster. One false move (from you or your neighbor) could ruin an outfit and quite possibly your whole day. Instead, wear dark colors — if you spill, no one will know.

Heavy purses and backpacks

Pack light. You won’t need much wine tasting — and lugging a heavy bag around will (literally) weigh on you, especially if you’re standing for hours. Don’t bring clutches that don’t have a strap. Remember, you’ll need to hold a glass of wine, so having your hands free is ideal. Instead, wear a lightweight, crossbody or sidestrap bags for a more comfortable experience.

Wine Credit Card for Wine Lovers | Winetraveler.com

Ladies, don’t bother. You’ll just leave obvious red marks on your wine glass and after a few sips, it will rub off anyway! If you want to glam up, try wearing some cute eyeshadow or extra mascara instead.

Excessive bracelets

Using your hand to lift your glass to your mouth is pretty much how wine tasting works, so if you have a bunch of jangling, metal bracelets, this will be loud and annoying for you and everyone around you. So don’t be that person, and go light on the bracelets.

What Should Men Wear To a Wine Tasting? | Winetraveler.com

For the men:

Guys, you can follow some of the above tips, but I’m going to make it nice and easy for you with your own special section:

Wear dark colors and avoid white

Bring a hat or sunglasses for outdoor tastings

Go easy on the cologne

Bring layers in case it’s cold

Final wine tasting tips:

Wine cellars can often be dry, so if you wear contacts and have sensitive eyes, bring along re-wetting drops or a tiny bottle of saline, or better yet, wear glasses.

Don’t forget sunblock or mosquito repellent if you know you’ll be tasting outside.

I hope everyone reads this…the number of times I’ve been tasting next to someone that has marinated in perfume/cologne is surprising to say the least!

It’s amazing how quickly that can ruin a tasting experience!

Brilliant! Perfect advice for anyone heading out tasting! Some of these things will only affect the person wearing it and their comfort, ie shoes, layers…but some things like fragrances can ruin a tasting for others in the room! I like Allison have dealt with those type of tastings, where suddenly you can’t smell the wine over the perfume. I must admit that I typically where hiking boots, so I can walk vineyards if I want, but…if the occasion calls for something dressier, I have a pair of flat boots that can be dressy and practical! This is all really great advice!

Actually, Robin, hiking boots can be a great idea if you aren’t keen on taking lots of photos and plan to walk around a lot. Good tip! I’m glad you found the tips useful, and I wish wineries would consider hanging up “no perfume allowed” signs haha.

This is brilliant! Some really great tips here and yes I always wear dark colours and red lipstick also helps if I’m trying a few red wines 😉

Casey, I didn’t actually think of the opposite argument for wearing dark lipstick — covering up red wine lips! Great tip 🙂

What else can encapsulate the spirit of Summer if not floral dresses? Choose your favorite maxi dress or summer dress with floral prints to look chic while wine tasting.

Just imagine how the pictures would turn out holding a wine while your floral dress dances in the wind– chef’s kiss!

Add these elements to add more pizzazz to your outfit:

  • flat sandals
  • wristlet or a woven tote bag

Crisp White Ensemble

One way to fight the heat in the Summer is by wearing light-colored clothes. Go for a breezy white blouse with high-waisted shorts or a lightweight skirt.

A white dress is also timeless for a winery visit BUT wear it cautiously. Consider the chances that you may spill your wine glass and leave wine stains on your dress.

Mix it up with these accessories to complete the overall look:

  • hoop earrings
  • crossbody bag
  • ankle strap flat sandals

Romper Delight

A stylish romper is also perfect for winery attire, especially in vibrant colors or playful patterns. It is a perfect blend of style and functionality for winery tours.

Sprinkle more fashion essence to your attire with these elements:

  • strappy sandals
  • delicate jewelry

What to Wear to a Winery in the Winter

For the “brr” season, choose to wear outfits that will keep you cozy and fashionable. Wintertime winery visits offer vineyards often adorned with frosty beauty.

To fully enjoy winery visits during Winter, I recommend rocking your wine-tasting with these outfits:

Cozy Knit Layers

Stay warm and toasty during your Winter winery visit with a layer of knit sweater over a turtleneck. Pair it with your favorite pair of slim-fit jeans or jeggings, and you’re ready.

Accentuate your whole look with the following:

  • knee-high boots or suede boots
  • stylish coat

Sophisticated Monochrome

Since you’ll be layering anyways, you might as well do it stylishly. Go for a monochromatic approach in your wine-tasting outfit for the winter season.

Check out this ensemble:

Have a go at formulating your perfect monochromatic ensemble with these options:

  • sweater dress
  • opaque tights

Plaid Perfection

The plaid wool skirt and cozy long-sleeved shirt combo are also a great outfit idea for a winery tour in the Winter.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Spring

If you plan to visit a winery during the blooming season, prepare to embrace springtime with fresh and lively attire.

Choose a wrap dress in pastel colors as your outfit for wine-tasting trips in Spring. The dress’s breathability and color make it a perfect outfit that really captures the season’s spirit.

Complement it with the following to add more style to the overall look:

  • nude or white ankle boots

Tips When Going to a Winery

Wineries are a lot of fun. You can go without “following the rules” and have the best time. However, some people take their wine tasting VERY seriously. For those of you looking for a top notch wine tasting experience, here are a few clothing & accessory tips to keep in mind.

1. No High Heels

If you are planning a full day of wine tasting, prepare to be on your feet. Wineries can get busy with large groups of people who are doing the exact same thing as you: making several stops to taste the best wines in the area. Seating can be minimal, so try to avoid high heels . Low chunky heels or wedges are ideal. However, if you are going for a quick evening tour or dinner at a winery, heels are absolutely doable.

2. Avoid Heavy Lipstick When Wine Tasting

It can be tempting to want to reach for your favorite lipstick or matte gloss to pair with your winery outfit. If you do, prepare to reapply CONSTANTLY. Opt for a tinted lip balm instead. It will keep your lips better hydrated, provide a little color, and you won’t have to spend half your time reapplying it.

3. Take a Small Handbag

This mainly applies to a full day of wine tasting, if you are headed out for a date then a mid to large size bag is manageable. When you are planning what to wear wine tasting, especially for a full day, I recommend taking a small crossbody or wristlet clutch. This allows your hands to be free during tastings. In addition, as mentioned above, seating may be limited so there may be no place to set your bag. Something to think about!

4. Overdressing and Underdressing

While wineries offer a luxurious experience your winery outfits should not be formal. Keep the cocktail dresses at home, instead opt for a nice sundress. Sweatpants are also frowned upon for wine tasting outfits. While sweat pants are trending these days, casual wear in wine country (or small-town winery) is probably more upscale than “normal causal”. Use this as an excuse to show off a really cool outfit and dress up a bit.

5. SPF is a Must with Winery Outfits

Any dermatologist will tell you that SPF is a must, even on the cloudiest of days. That is why it is super important, if you will be exploring the vineyards, to layer a good sunscreen under your winery outfits & makeup. I use this hack for my favorite (expensive, but clean) sunscreen !

6. Be Cautious with White Winery Outfits

Can you wear white to a winery?  Yes! Can you spill red wine on yourself? YES. White is so pretty to wear at the vineyards for wine tastings. It’s chic and timeless.  But you have to wear white with caution. If you easily spill on yourself, save your white denim jeans foe champagne houses. However, if you can be cautious and careful, or plan to drink only white, then go for the white outfit!

7. Skip your Perfume

A huge part of the wine tasting experience is smelling the wine. If you want to have the full experience, skip your perfume that day!

Dresses for Wine Tasting

Depending on the weather, there are several dresses suitable for wine tasting. Below are a few options for cold weather and warm weather. For cold weather, you want to ensure you can layer according to your needs. Summer dresses for wine tasting should focus on flow and fabric weight. Fabric should be light and flowy for maximum confort!

Cold Weather Dresses for Wine Tasting

  • A classic sweater dress paired with fleece lined tights and boots
  • A long ribbed knit dress paired with a chic wrap coat and tall leather boots

Warm Weather Dresses for Wine Tasting

  • Floral midi dress with wedges or sandals
  • Black boho dress with sandals or sneakers
  • A classic wrap dress with a dainty print (love this!)

Can i wear jeans to a winery.

Yes! Denim is accepted now more than ever before. Some wineries will be more upscale than others.

Do a little research on your location beforehand to get a feel for how you should dress. Look them up on social media and see how others have dressed there.

If unsure, but you want to wear jeans, then pair your denim with a satin blouse, cashmere sweater, or chic blazer to dress it up a bit. Balance is the key to great winery outfits.

Pairing your f avorite pair ripped jeans with a silk blouse and blazer is a great example of this.

Spring Winery Outfits

Wherever your winery is located, this season can bring about the most beautiful scenery. But also, be prepared for touchy weather. Check the weather in advance and plan your outfit accordingly.

I prefer planning all Spring activities in hopes of warmer days and less rain. Green buds & blossoms begin to show, especially in vineyards this time of year.

Summer Winery Outfits

Summer winery outfits should be thought out with hot, hot temps in mind. Especially if visiting true “wine country” the weather will be WARM. I love that a linen blazer for early and late summer, it is light and breezy but structured and elegant. For the hottest of days, go with a flowy dress for comfort and style.

Fall Winery Outfits

Fall is the prettiest time of the year to visit most vineyards. Fall foliage alongside the beautiful vines calls for the perfect wine tasting outfits. Opt for muted tones in your clothing to offset the vibrant hues the landscape will (likely) provide. Here are some of my favorite fall winery outfits.

Winter Winery Outfits

Anything that has layers and tons of warmth for chilly days and nights. You never know where a wine tour will take you, so plan for layers.

Depending on the vineyard location, you may need to pack an umbrella, in case you get caught winter rain!

Remember, the vines will lack color this time of year, so there probably won’t be as many photo ops the vineyards this time of year.

Do Wineries Have Dress Codes for Winery Outfits

Most wineries do not have dress codes. However, they are beautiful establishments, often with vibrant history and well-dressed staff.

Dress code or not, your outfit should be reflective of your personal style, as always. If you are concerned about whether or not your wine tasting outfit is appropriate, do your research on the establishments’ website & social channels to get a feel for their aesthetic. Chic casual winery outfits, like the ones in this post, are safe bets!

01- Smart Casual Outfits for All Seasons

Spring/summer winery outfits, fall/winter winery outfits, 02- wedges or flats, best summer shoe: cole haan anica sandal, best spring/fall shoe: rothy's pointed toe, best classic shoe: tory burch ballet flats, 03- crossbody purse, 04- layers, 05- comfortable clothing is key, 06- avoid white, 07- chapstick or long-wearing lipstick, 08- no perfume, 09- sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen, 10- sunglasses + cute sun hat, final thoughts, related content.

Douro Valley wine region in Portugal: wearing a flowy, floral dress from Amour Vert

Feminine, flowy dresses are my favorite outfit to throw on for a visit to a winery in the spring or summer.

I love the women-led brand Amour Vert.

I am wearing one of their red numbers in the photo above, which was taken at Quinta do Tedo in Douro Valley, Portugal.

Wearing a nautical sundress on a Santorini wine tour in Greece (yes, those are the vines behind us, which are intertwined into a bird’s nest shape to collect the morning dew).

Another one of my favorite places to find cute sundresses is Revolve.

So many cute choices, almost too many.

Central Otago wine region in New Zealand: wearing dark jeans, a brightly colored top, J.crew blazer, and Rothy’s pointed-toe flat.

For the fall, I love wearing Athleta’s Sculptek dark denim skinny jeans , a brightly-colored shirt and scarf, a blazer, and Rothy’s or Tory Burch ballet flats. The picture above was taken in the Central Otago wine region in New Zealand.

For the winter, I switch out the blazer for the long J.crew lady day coat and slip into super comfortable Nisolo booties  with a block heel.

I cannot emphasize this one enough! Wear cute flats or wedges.

Save your stilettos for the cocktail bar.

When you visit a winery, you may be walking outdoors checking out the soil in the vineyard as we did in Douro Valley, Portugal . Any heel is going to get stuck in that dirt.

Or you may be navigating steep steps in an ancient chalk cave in the Champagne region in France. I would have died if I was wearing heels.

Here are my three go-to winery shoes:

Burgundy wine tour in France: wearing Cole Haan Anica sandals

The Cole Haan Anica Sandals may be the most comfortable thong sandals I have ever owned. I have the nude and rose/gold metallic sandals, which go with basically anything.

I not only wear them at wineries but for travel in general. They worked perfectly for our recent wine tours in Champagne and Burgundy, France as shown in the photo above.

Perfect spring/fall winery shoe: Rothy’s Pointed Toe Flat

I am addicted to Rothy’s Pointed Toe Flats and own too many pairs that I care to admit.

They are super comfortable and you can throw them in the washer when they get dirty. There are so many fun colors to choose from.

I also love how a pointed toe can give the appearance of longer legs.

The Rothy’s are great for visiting a winery in the spring or fall. I wore them when we visited the Central Otago wine region in New Zealand, which you can see a little bit in this photo .

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine tour in South Africa: wearing Tory Burch ballet flats (being goofy and trying to be taller than my husband)

I love classic staple pieces.

The Tory Burch ballet flat is one of them.

They are not as comfortable as the Rothy’s or the Cole Haan Anica sandals, but they are still very comfortable and won’t kill your feet walking through a vineyard.

The Tory Burch ballet flats are a great spring/fall winery shoe. I wore them in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine region in South Africa and in the Goriska Brda wine country in Slovenia.

Great way to elevate an outfit.

Champagne tour in France: wearing a crossbody purse

You will need both hands to do all of that sipping, so you will want to be hands-free.

I strongly recommend wearing a crossbody purse. That way you can move about freely without doing a juggling act with your wine glass.

Some of my favorites are the classic Burberry as seen in the photo above. I purchased this staple piece through Gilt, which offers great designer discounts.

Another one of my favorites that I take on our wine vacations is the Lo & Sons Pearl purse (seen in most of my photos across my body as a light grey strap).

The creator of Lo & Sons has an incredible story . I love supporting strong innovative women.

Yarra Valley wine region: layering up with a cardigan

The wine cellars can get quite cool.

Prepare by having a cardigan or light jacket ready just in case.

Cute options that I’ve worn include the Lilly Pulitzer denim jacket (surprisingly soft for a denim jacket!) or a preppy J.crew blazer.

I’ve also just worn a light cardigan like when we were in the Yarra Valley wine region in Australia as pictured above.

White House Black Market usually has some great cardigan options , which is what I’m wearing above.

With winemaker Primoz Lavrencic at Burja Estate in Slovenia: wearing Anatomie city slick jacket and Tory Burch flats

Another great layering option is the wrinkle-resistant, figure-flattering Anatomie city slick jacket.

I’ve taken this jacket on quite a few trips including on a recent wine tour in Goriska Brda, Slovenia as shown in the photo above.

This is a fantastic layering jacket and travel jacket in general!

What to wear at a winery in Douro Valley, Portugal: comfortable black shift dress with lace trim

After a few glasses of wine, you will be thankful you saved that cute romper to wear for another day.

Avoid outfits that are too fussy with a million buttons or those that take 10 minutes to take off to use the restroom.

Comfort is king.

I purchased this super comfortable black shift dress with lace trim through Lulus (pictured above), which is no longer available. However, Amazon has quite a few comparable dresses.

Some blogs will tell you it’s ok to throw those cute white jeans on if you’re not a “spiller.”

However, in my opinion, even if you are super careful, inevitability the person beside you may not be. And despite your best intentions, that lovely glass of pinot noir may find its way onto your lap.

If you do end up with a wine stain, try out some Wine Away Stain Remover . Never actually had to use it, but it’s highly rated and has been featured in Food & Wine, Today Show, Washington Post, and many others.

You will be doing a lot of tastings, so either throw on a little Aquaphor lip ointment or wear a long-wearing lipstick that’s not going to transfer.

One of my favorites is Pat McGrath’s LiquiLUST matte lipstick .

You will be doing quite a bit of sniffing. If you are doused in perfume, you will not be able to smell what you are drinking (and neither will those around you!).

Skip it and save it for dinner.

Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen

If you go to a winery you will likely be walking around the vineyard and maybe even doing your tasting outdoors. Wear sunscreen!

I’m a little bit of a skincare diva.

Keep that skin beautiful and free of wrinkles and brown spots.

My absolute favorite is Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen.

Champagne wine tour in France: wearing my Ray Ban aviators

I love classic pieces, so my go-to sunglasses are my Ray Ban aviators as pictured above.

No squinting! I’m avoiding those crow’s feet as long as I can.

A cute hat is another great way to protect that gorgeous skin of yours while sauntering through the vineyards.

My favorite is the wide-brimmed J.crew hat .

We love checking out the wine regions in the countries we visit. From fancy estates to visiting winemakers in their garages, we have enjoyed experiencing it all.

If you are like me, I always stress about what to wear and want to make sure I dress appropriately for the occasion. I hope these tips help you as you come up with your own cute winery outfit.

What To Wear To Winery | 12 Stylish Winery Outfits For Your Tour

Need some inspiration for what to wear to a winery? This style guide will help you choose the perfect outfit for your trip to wine country, the local winery, or a wine-tasting event.

what to wear to winery

Knowing what to wear to a winery is a big part of the experience. Not only will the perfect winery outfit keep you comfortable walking, standing, and drinking, but it will also prevent any fashion faux pas. Especially if you plan on getting a bit tipsy, which will most likely happen.

Here’s a list of stylish wine tasting outfits to wear to a winery, whether you’re visiting in the winter, spring, summer, or fall. And also, a few style tips on what not to wear to a winery as well.

This post is all about what to wear to winery.

Wine Tasting Attire Female

What attire should you wear to a winery.

The most important thing about what to wear to a winery is ensuring you’re comfortable during your visit. Depending on the type and location of the winery you’re visiting, you could be in for a few hours of walking and standing, either outside in the hot sun or inside a cool, damp cellar. Due to these potential differences in temperature, it’s good to dress in layers, or at least bring a layer to put over your shoulders in the summer.

A casual chic aesthetic provides the best blend of stylish and comfort when it comes to winery outfits during the day. However, you’ll want to dress up if you’ll be going to a winery dinner or a fancy event. It’s never an issue to call the vineyard and ask if there’s a dress code beforehand. We’ll cover the best winery outfits and how to style them later.

First, you must consider these unwritten rules when you plan to visit a winery, no matter what season.

What To Wear Wine Tasting: The Unwritten Rules

1. sun protection.

We all know how important it is to protect our skin from too much sun exposure. If you’re planning to be outside at a winery, such as in Napa Valley, you’ll definitely want to bring along a good SPF. The rays of the sun can be strong, even in winter, and if you’re going on a wine tour you don’t want to kick things off with a sunburn to match the bottle of cabernet you just purchased.

My favorite facial SPF that also works as a makeup primer is Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV Clear . It’s SPF50+, goes on clear, and won’t take up much space in your handbag.

The best way to reapply sunscreen over makeup is to dab it on with a Beauty Blender rather than blending and smearing it all over your face.

A hat is a must for what to wear to a winery if you plan to be outside. Not only does it help protect your face and neck from the sun, but it’s also a stylish addition to a winery outfit. Opt for a straw hat in the spring and summer and a felt or wool hat in the fall and winter.

Eric Javits is my favorite company for chic, travel-friendly hats year round.

casual winery outfits

3. Tinted Lip Balm Or Waterproof Lipstick

If you’ve drank red wine before, you’re familiar with the dreaded “wine lips”. Some of us get it more than others it seems, but either way, it’s not attractive. Prevent this by keeping your lips moist with a lip balm, such as the LipDrink from Jane Iredale . It’s vegan, provides a light tint, and has SPF 25 for protection.

If you’re a fan of color on your lips, I recommend a waterproof, liquid lipstick. You want something with staying power for all the drinking you’ll be doing. My favorite liquid lipstick that has true staying power is Sigma Beauty’s Liquid Lipstick . I wore it to dinner and drinks (yes, red wine drinks) and still had to wash it off when I came home that evening. To keep my lips from drying out, I first apply a layer of lip balm (like the Jane Iredale one above) before I apply liquid lipstick.

Pro-Tip: Proper etiquette when drinking from a wine or champagne glass is to always drink from the same spot. This avoids a ring of lipstick smudges around the glass.

4. Sunglasses

A pair of sunglasses is always necessary if you’ll be outside at a wine tasting event. Large frames are perfect for protecting your eyes from the sun and also hiding any mid-day drinking daze that may occur if you’re hopping from vineyard to vineyard.

I’m obsessed with my cat eye sunglasses from FREYRS , which are a steal for the same quality and style of rival designer pairs I’ve purchased.

5. Be Discerning With Light Colors

There are no rules for what colors to wear to a winery. However, if you’re a heavy red wine drinker or notorious for spilling, it may be wise to avoid white, ivory, and other light colors in your winery outfit. If you think you’ll be okay, then go for it. I love a beautiful neutral outfit for a wine tasting in the spring or summer.

Bring some Wine Away and leave it in the car or van just to be safe.

6. Crossbody Bag

A crossbody bag is the essential handbag to bring to a vineyard. Hands-free is the way to be when you’re wine tasting.

7. Comfortable Shoes

Definitely avoid stilettos and high heels in your wine tasting outfit. These styles aren’t very efficient for standing a long time or walking through a vineyard. Flat shoes or chunky soles are two good options for what shoes to wear to a winery. Try a small block heel if you want some height.

Brands like Vivaia and Birdies are known for their chic and comfortable shoes, made for standing, walking, and traveling.

8. Avoid Strong Perfumes

Scent and taste are a huge part of the experience at a wine tasting. If you wear a strong perfume, not only could this affect your ability to capture the scent and taste of the wine, but it could also affect others near you. Proper winery etiquette is to avoid strong perfumes. If you must, opt for a lightly scented body lotion instead.

What To Wear To A Winery In Fall?

Fall is my favorite time to go wine tasting. The haze from summer has dissipated and there’s a crispness to the air. It’s the perfect time for wine festivals.

I used to always visit a winery in my area for their annual Harvest Wine Festival which featured select wines from local vineyards, craft vendors, food trucks, and live music . You could tour the vineyard at your own leisure, bring a picnic blanket, and take a nice nap after sampling the area’s best. Sadly, the festival became commercialized and lost a lot of the local vendors. I still love the winery and stop in and enjoy a relaxing glass or two with some tapas after a half-day of hiking.

Here are some cute winery outfits for what to wear to a winery in the fall.

Fall Wine Tasting Outfits

Equestrian aesthetic.

The equestrian aesthetic is hands-down my favorite style to wear to a winery, farm, apple picking, or even a pumpkin patch . A plaid blazer, knit top, slim pants, and a pair of riding boots (the most important piece) provide a classic and chic winery look for transitional weather.

Wineries don’t typically have a dress code, but you’ll definitely experience better treatment if you dress nice . That’s another unwritten rule for anywhere you’ll be receiving service.

First things first, let’s talk about the winery dress attire code. Although there are no strict rules, everyone expects you to look nice. Plus, you’ll receive better service and attention if you look your best.

So, let’s discuss the basic clothing etiquette rules that apply to all locations and seasons!

When you’re at wine tasting trying to focus on the different flavors, a strong perfume will only get in the way and mess up your taste buds.

Therefore, go easy on the scent.

I advise you to pick some light deodorant and totally skip the perfume for this occasion. This is the only way you can decipher the prominent notes of the wine. Besides, not everyone appreciates distracting fragrances, and some people may even be allergic.

Whatever you want to wear at the winery, remember that comfort is the key. So, along with your perfume, skip heels as well.

In case you’re planning to visit many wineries in a day or have signed up for a wine tour, you’ll have to walk a lot, so comfy shoes are the only option. But don’t worry, it doesn’t only have to be sneakers.

Ladies, you can decide between some nice loafers, flat sandals, slides, or wedges.

Moreover, I suggest you consider whether you’ll be walking on cobblestone, gravel, dirt, or grass. The type of terrain will help you make the right choice.

Since heels are out of the question, I’m about to show you a commonly worn footwear at wineries. Closed-toe shoes pair the best with clothes to wear to a winery. If you’re still not convinced, let me show you two appropriate options:

I prefer closed-toe shoes as they protect your toe fingers and still look good. This footwear ensures style and comfort with each step.

Let’s see another option:

These cute ballerina pumps redefine class and elegance with comfortable wear. The best thing? They pair perfectly with all types of dresses!

I know how much women love yoga pants because I’m the one, too. And I am sorry to burst your bubble, but this is also something that’s not appropriate to wear to a wine festival or any other winery event. But don’t worry, here are two other pant options that you can wear instead:

I personally adore chino trousers as they’re not too tight or thick – ideal for summer. The loose fit and permanent cuff at the ends maximize comfort for wine tasting.

But if chino isn’t your cup of tea, here’s an alternative:

I bet you guessed it already! Jeans are versatile enough for this occasion too. These ankle-high jeans can look good with a blouse, shirt, or top. Plus, you can move in the stretchy fabric easily.

When it comes to clothes to wear to a winery, women are often confused about whether shorts are appropriate for this event. Well, luckily, you can bring them to the party! But let me guide you to the best models with two Pinterest examples.

These airy, white, frilled shorts seem to reflect cottagecore vibes. A black top, handbag, and sandals ensure the perfect look during your wine tasting journey.

But if you want something a bit more common, you can pick something like this:

Simple and sweet, jean shorts are every girl’s best friend. And yes, you can absolutely wear them to the winery. Just pair them with the right T-shirt and blouse and you’ll rock this style.

Based on the season, layering up is always a good idea. By dressing in layers, you’ll be able to adjust to the changing temperatures and enjoy your experience.

In the summer and spring months, opt for a denim jacket or some cute floral blazer. Let me inspire you with an adorable combo:

What about an outfit that is both stylish and comfortable? Look no further than this combination of a floral blazer and shorts. This ensemble is perfect for a day spent exploring the winery or meeting friends for lunch.

Lastly, a long warm cardigan is a great choice for fall and winter. Consider something like this:

However, when it comes to adding layers, ensure that your look doesn’t appear bulky, as you need maximum freedom of movement.

If you want insight on the best fashion tips for wineries, let me give it to you straight – dress a bit classier than usual.

Since wine tasting is itself a posh activity, everyone is expected to dress nice and classy. And since you’re reading this guide to learn how to dress better for the occasion, I’m here to help you.

Ladies, try wearing a tulle skirt, a sensual dress, or a bow top. Just pull out the most trendy and chic outfit you own and flaunt it!

12 Outfits to Wear to a Winery

We’re finally ready to unveil different clothes to wear to a winery. As always, I have made plenty of outfit ideas based on different seasons and styles.

After this guide, you’ll become an expert on winery outfits. Let’s dive in!

When I think about wine tasting outfits, florals automatically come to mind. There’s some special charm in a floral print, don’t you think? And the first season that comes to mind is spring.

So, here’s how to rock a springtime attire in a winery:

Inspire yourself with a romance of winery gardens in this floral dress that looks so cute! If you want to elevate this look, just add some dangling earrings and a black clutch.

And since it might be muddy in the vineyard, I suggest you wear closed-toe shoes which you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.

When it comes to spring clothes to wear to a winery, I recommend choosing a classy midi dress, like this one:

This polka dot dress is so cute and flattering, and you’ll be able to wear it with confidence! The belt in the center and the flowy skirt really pull the look together.

I’d recommend pairing it with a floral shoulder bag, beige ballerina pumps, and statement earrings to seal the deal.

When temperatures start to drop, that’s when stylish layers get their time to shine. I would like to say that this is the motto of casual winery outfits in the fall.

Besides, autumn sometimes feels gloomy and cloudy, so let’s add some color to our styling with a chic pink sleeveless dress:

This piece  is mesmerizing on its own, but you can really make it pop by wearing a knitted, lightweight cardigan on top. A sweater over a dress is a timeless combo that looks brilliant!

Among clothes to wear to a winery, blouses and shorts have earned a solid reputation for being reliable and stylish. This is an ideal combination to wear during the summer months when the heat is unbearable.

Let me show you how fancy it can look:

The black shorts featuring flowers and a cotton off-shoulder blouse are both great picks for summer. Elegant sandals, a handbag, and tassel earrings add the perfect touch of playfulness.

As we can see from the example above, the outfits for ladies in the warmer months usually include an off-shoulder neckline as it lets your skin breathe.

So, tell me, what do you think about something like this?

This cute cocktail dress would be perfect for a summer day at the winery. It features a nice green color suitable for the season. Pair it with closed-toe breathable shoes and a striking yellow bag to look flawless!

When it comes to clothes to wear to a winery that are both practical and induce confidence, I want to present you with this fantastic combo:

I love the elegance of this blue midi skirt! I own a couple of such pieces, and they always come to the rescue when I don’t know what to wear. A skirt like this can pair effortlessly with a solid tank top and look stunning.

In contrast, add some golden details to bring the outfit to the next level.

And what if you don’t want to wear a dress to the winery? No worries, I have an excellent alternative for you – a jumpsuit. It looks great on most body types and is really easy to wear and accessorize.

Take a look at this one:

This red jumpsuit creates a chic outfit that would be perfect for a posh winery. You can accessorize it with gold hoop earrings and timeless black pumps.

And don’t forget your sunnies!

If you are wondering if there are any casual clothes to wear to a winery, I have good news – yes, the options are endless! In this case, jeans come in handy to save the day. So if you were asking yourself, “Can I wear jeans to a winery?” there’s a positive answer again – yes, you can!

Check out this combo:

This combination is perfect for a visit to a vineyard! Wide-leg jeans and a top with ruffles create a balance between classy and everyday wear. The green loafers are an elegant touch, and the small handbag is the perfect size for carrying the essentials.

What do you think about wearing a maxi dress for the winery? I think it would be a great choice!

Personally, I’d go for an airy maxi dress to ensure freedom of movement. I just love feeling like I’m not wearing anything at all.

Here’s an example of a dress I’m talking about:

The open-toe sandals, black sunnies, and navy blue handbag pair flawlessly with the rest of the outfit.

And if you are looking for the perfect one-and-done outfit to wear to a wine tasting event, go with a cute romper – they are stylish and look flattering on all body types.

Let me show you one adorable romper that I fell in love with:

The loose fabric will help keep you from getting too hot in the sun and protect your skin at the same time. Add some neutral accessories and show up to your next wine tasting looking like a total boss!

If you’re looking for something that will give you that country club aesthetic, choose floral clothes to wear to a winery.

For example, this blue floral dress is so pretty! You could pair it with some basic sandals or add a blue bag and earrings for a more put-together look.

Finally, let’s talk about what to wear in the winter months – cold temperatures can really complicate your outfit choices! But layers are your best friend. Besides, a layered look is always more stylish than a single piece of clothing.

Wondering how to do it? Let me show you:

Doesn’t this ensemble look warm and cozy? Just choose a basic sweater and a long sleeveless cardigan. Finally, add cowboy boots to the combo as an extra fancy detail.

Ready to look fantastic during your summer visit to the winery? In this section, I’ll show you both formal and casual wine tasting outfit ideas for the hot weather.

Let’s go!

Fancy a black-and-white combination? Then you’ll love this one-shoulder dress. It guarantees ventilation and freedom of mobility – two things needed for summer.

In this dress, you’ll be comfortable no matter what. Whether sitting or standing, you’ll feel great during your winery visit. Pair it with black accessories, and you’ll seal the deal! By the way, if you are a broad-shouldered lady , this asymmetrical cut will perfectly balance your upper body.

And if you want something tighter and more attractive, consider wearing a bodycon dress like this:

If you think you can handle a tight piece during your wine tasting tour, this floral dress belongs to the best clothes to wear to a winery. It strikes a balance between dressy and casual. Style it with chunky sandals, a beachy bag, and black sunnies to protect your eyes.

P.S. If you are wondering what are the best shoes to wear with a red dress , I recently wrote about it, so you can check out your options.

And now we are coming to the crisp autumn season that brings you in the mood for wine tasting. That’s why I have prepared two outfit ideas.

Check out the first one:

For a fall trip to the winery, I would go for a relaxed and lightweight sweater with stretchy pants. You could brighten up the outfit by adding ankle boots and a purse in burgundy since this color resembles wine. And I don’t know about you, but this looks like a great outfit idea for senior pictures as well, right?

Next, if you want to wear a nice dress suitable for autumn walks, let me inspire you with this beautiful model:

If you don’t want to bring a layering piece, you can wear a long-sleeved shirt under the dress, so you don’t have to sacrifice your style. Besides, dresses with A-line skirts and a belt on the waistline are the perfect option for hiding the tummy.

And again, add some burgundy details that will fit perfectly into the event.

And when temperatures really drop, it’s time for a winery dinner party! But don’t worry, I’ve got your back, ladies! I’ve prepared two fantastic outfits for the colder days.

Let me show you the first one:

I love this color combination! A white turtleneck sweater and brown wide-leg pants look adorable together. Finally, beige loafers, a small purse, and a long brown coat complete the outfit and make you ready to shine!

And if you prefer dresses even when the snow is falling outside, then a sweater dress is the perfect option.

If you’re looking for a cozy and stylish way to stay warm and look fancy in your winter wine tour outfit , you can’t go wrong with a sweater dress.

Complete the look with details such as a purse, thigh-high boots, and a belted coat.

4 Outfits for Guys to Wear to a Winery

Enough about ladies; I bet my male readers are dying to see some cute outfits for themselves to flaunt at a winery.

Ahead, I’ve shared four outfits, and to keep it fair, you will find out how to dress up for different seasons as well. Here we go, guys!

The first section is for guys looking for unique clothes to wear to a winery. In my opinion, men should experiment with their fashion sense in summer by wearing something similar to this:

This Hawaiian-style shirt looks great with blue shorts and classy loafers. I would definitely recommend this outfit for hot summer days when you want to look your best and not get too hot. It’s simple and so cool at the same time!

Moving into the fall season, it’s important to consider both a warm September afternoon and a chilly morning. Here’s how you can ace your look in both temperatures:

Put on a polo shirt, jeans, and comfortable sneakers, and don’t forget to bring a cardigan if it gets cold.

Don’t be fooled by the hot afternoon hours because you can already feel the chilly air during the evening. For this reason, some layering pieces are a must-have on autumn days.

When it gets cold enough that a coat becomes necessary, you can put on something like this for winter outfits for vineyards:

This head-to-toe black attire is how men can look ‘winery cool.’ The elements in this ensemble pair nicely to create an edgy and poised vibe.

Throw in black socks, comfy pants, and ankle boots, and you’re good to go. This outfit proves one thing – less is more!

And if you’re looking for an idea of what to wear during the spring heat, then I’m sure you’ll love this timeless combination – khaki pants and a breathable white shirt.

This outfit incorporates neutral tones that never go out of style. This is the best way to achieve breathability and coverage at the same time in the spring.

To take the outfit to the next level, add a belt and All Star footwear, and you will look absolutely fantastic!

Here, I conclude my guide on clothes to wear to a winery. I hope all of you now know that the juxtaposition between practical and stylish is the secret ingredient in creating a flawless ‘wine-tasting’ ensemble.

Let’s go through the tips once again:

  • Don’t wear perfume, heels, and yoga pants in the winery.
  • During the muddy weather, always wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Layers are a great option for all seasons.
  • Although there is no strict dress code, try to be a little more dressed up than usual.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer

What to wear to a winery in the fall, what to wear to a winery in the winter, what to wear to a winery in the spring, what to wear to a winery wedding, wine tasting outfit ideas, what shoes to wear to a winery, what purse to take to a winery, what to wear to a winery.

When deciding what to wear to a winery, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Keep it Classy – wine tasting is a pretty boujee experience so you’ll want to dress it up a bit even if it feels like you are just going to a piece of farm land. Leave the workout gear at home and pack all of your most stylish outfits!
  • Wear comfortable shoes – you may be walking around or standing A LOT on a vineyard tour. Pick sensible shoes like white sneakers , flats or sandals. There may be gravel or dirt paths so definitely avoid heels depending on your activity. However, if you are simply having brunch or wine tasting indoors, go for it with the heels!
  • Pack for the season and the valley – you will absolutely want to check the weather ahead of time. Even in the hot summers of Mendoza, it does cool off at night to the point of needing a light jacket.
  • Should you wear white? – If you are someone who spills often, make sure you don’t wear white to a wine tasting 🙂
  • Hands-free – you will likely have your hands full with wine so it’s best to take a crossbody purse or backpack for a vacation to wine country.
  • Think about your activities – are you going to do a bike tour? A walking tour? Only a tasting? Lunch? Depending on your activity you’ll want to plan outfits accordingly so you have appropriate shoes for biking.

Next, I will break this down by season. Keep in mind, if you are heading to the Southern Hemisphere, their seasons are opposite of what I am listing here. Our summer is their winter in regions like Mendoza.

wine tasting outfits

Summer is a great time to visit a winery. Not only can you enjoy wine tastings and vineyard tours, but you should book a resort with a pool so you can soak up the sun after a long day!

Whether you are wine tasting in Italy, USA, or Argentina, the summers for that region will be warm. So, you’ll want to wear loose fitting outfits during the day (when you may sweat) and throw on a light jacket in the evenings when it cools off. I visited Mendoza in early March (transition of their Summer into Fall in the southern hemisphere) and it was much warmer than I expected due to the high elevation, but it cooled off significantly at night. It was about 80s during the day and 60s at night.

I recommend wearing flowy dresses or skirts to a winery in the summer. You could also do some breezy shorts with a cute blouse.

N/A

Fall is my favorite time to visit wine country in the United States because it’s harvest season and you will see the vines full of grapes! Typically, the Fall months can still be warm in wine country, but you will need a light sweater in the morning and evenings. Napa Valley is warm during the day and cooler at night or the early morning, especially at the beginning of the season.

I would plan to wear things like maxi dresses, thin sweater dresses, jumpsuits, and skirts & blouses, paired with cute blazers or denim jackets. Wear fall colors like brown, purple, navy, and rust with textures like suede and plaid! Here is the vibe to go for:

N/A

Winter is a different story depending on where you go. In Mendoza , they get snow during the winter! I have seen photos and it’s absolutely beautiful to see the vineyards blanketed in fresh powder. In a place like Napa, winter is a great time to visit because the crowds have dispersed and the weather is mostly dry. It can rain more frequently so pack an umbrella! Think of how cozy winter in wine country would be with blankets, red wine, fireplaces, and an intimate atmosphere!

In the winter, you will likely want to bundle up a bit more as the high for Napa Valley is about 50F. Wear some super chic trousers with a sweater or even opt for dressy jeans this time of year. Pair it with a nice, warm coat and cute booties! Go for chunky sweaters, faux leather , velvet , houndstooth, and all your favorite winter textures. Here are some wine tasting outfit ideas for winter:

N/A

There is really no bad time to visit wine country! Spring is a refreshing time to visit after the winter rains bring fresh green color to the region again. The days start getting longer and the sun shines warmly. The days are usually in the 60-70s, but the nights can still be chilly in the 40s.

I know we are all eager to break out our dresses come springtime. Don your best floral sundress with a jean jacket or light sweater. You could also do white jeans with a colorful top and wedges this time of year.

N/A

If you are attending a winery wedding , I am super jealous! What a beautiful place to tie the knot and of course, the drinks are going to be amazing. What to wear to a winery wedding depends on the invite dress code and of course the season. I would go for beautiful fabrics like satin and colors like burgundy, pink, yellow, dark green, navy, floral, or black. I think a midi dress always works for anything whether cocktail attire or black tie. Pair it with a block heel to be on the safe side since you might not know what the terrain will be like!

Here are some ideas that would look super chic.

Finally, here are all my favorite outfit ideas for wine country from dresses to jumpsuits to shoes!

Vineyard tours may consist of a lot of walking and standing around. Pick sensible shoes like white sneakers , flats, sandals, or comfortable booties/wedge. There may be gravel or dirt paths so definitely avoid heels depending on your activity. However, if you are simply having brunch or wine tasting indoors, go for it with the heels!

N/A

Lastly, let’s talk about what purse to take to a winery. You will be walking around, taking photos, holding a wine glass, and will really need your hands free. Go for a crossbody purse or chic backpack. I would not do a clutch or regular purse as it will make your arms tired or you may set it down and forget it. Here are some nice options:

Cute Winery Outfits for Fall and Winter

What to Expect When it Comes to the Weather

Fall is the best time to visit wineries in Napa Valley and Sonoma County, but September and October in Northern and Central California can see some dramatic temperature swings.

One day it will be 65 or 70, and the next it will be 85 or 90 degrees! While the days can still get pretty toasty in October, the nights are always chilly. No matter what outfit you decide to wear on your winery tour, always take a light jacket, a wrap, or a shawl with you.

Casual Dresses & Cropped Jackets

The most popular outfit you will see when you travel to wine country during autumn’s chilly months is a casual dress paired with a relaxed jean jacket. This is pretty much the unofficial uniform in Napa Valley and Sonoma County, regardless of the season.

If you don’t have a denim jacket, don’t worry. You can also swap for any cropped jacket or even use a cardigan sweater.

Dresses with Knee-High or Ankle Boots

Oh my gosh! I love this look. In my opinion the dress with knee-high boot look is one of the best fall wine tasting outfit ideas you can wear. You can wear short dresses, knee-length, tea-length, or long, flowy, maxi dresses.

Pull out your cowgirl boots, your leather boots, vegan leather or suede ankle boots for an outfit that says, I’m here to taste wine and have the time of my life!

Sarah Christine, of Sarah Styles Seattle , has created the most beautiful wine country dress with knee-high boots outfit.

Comfy Sweaters and Jeans

Who says you can’t feel cozy at your wine tasting? Timeless, relaxed elegance, versatility (you can dress sweaters and jeans up or down), and comfort. Add your favorite scarf, wear your hair up in a bun, put on a pair of earrings, and you’re ready to go. This is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to cute winery outfits.

Style these with tennis shoes, like Meghan from Wit and Whimsy (love her outfits!), or go with boots, ballet flats, or mules.

Grey sweater and jeans are a great fall winery outfit.

Cozy Neutrals

I love the way Amanda from Strawberry Chic layered this cozy neutral jacket with the denim and knee-high cream boots. So gorgeous for a fall wine tasting outfit that’s functional and stylish.

Spring and Summer Winery Outfits

Spring and summer are hot in California, and other popular wine regions. 100 degrees is not unheard of in August. Bring your sunscreen, wear light clothes, and stick to casual shoes like espadrilles, sandals (sparkly or leather), or sneakers.

Do you have a cute sun hat you’ve been dying to wear? Bring that too. It will help you look like a local when you walk through the vineyards on your tour of the winery.

Vibrant Dresses

Bright, poppy dresses are a must for your next winery outfit. Not only are dresses lightweight and easy to pack, but wearing a vibrant, colorful dress will produce some amazingly eye-catching photos.

Whether you’re standing in the vineyard among the green vines, or you’re sipping on the patio at a bucket list Napa winery, dresses are always a good idea in wine country.

Shorts and Linen Shirts

The classic combo of linen shirts and shorts are an excellent choice for a summer winery outfit. Linen is super breathable, which will help keep you cool while you’re enjoying your wine tasting experience outside. The “quiet luxury vibe” of linen will have other guests wondering, does her family own the winery, or is she just visiting?

Pro Tips for Planning Your Winery Outfit

Avoid White

I don’t know about you, but the minute I wear white, the probability that I will drip or dribble something on my clothes increases by about a thousand percent. There will always be a red wine in your wine flight, so a good rule of thumb is to avoid white – unless you’re really, really careful with your sips.

Say ‘no, thanks’ to High Heels

Napa and Sonoma may seem glitzy on the outside, but really, these are rural, country places. With that in mind, you are going to encounter all kinds of surfaces when you go to a winery: gravel, pebbly paths, grass, and cobblestones.

Fall can also bring rain, and wet ground; and fallen leaves plus glasses of wine can make the ground super slippery.

If your wine tasting includes a tour of the winery and the grounds, definitely wear a flat shoe, or a wedge to make walking easy. You can even wear crisp white sneakers, if you dress them up a bit.

Avoid perfume and body lotion

One of the greatest joys a wine lover can experience when sipping is the aromas from the glass. Never, never, never apply perfume or scented body lotion before going tasting. This isn’t just for your benefit, but for everyone else in the tasting room or winery too.

Proceed with caution with bodysuits

Okay, real talk. It’s going to be a pain in the you-know-what to keep snapping and unsnapping the bottom of that bodysuit every time you go to the restroom. And, let’s be serious, after a few pours of wine, it’s going to get more and more annoying. While I love bodysuits as much as the next gal, I would probably skip these.

  • Be careful when you step into the winery’s vineyard for those cute Insta-pics. Late spring through early fall in Napa and Sonoma is rattlesnake season. And with temperatures fluctuating between the 80s and 90s during the day, those little buggers are still active. Be really careful when you take your vineyard outfit ideas into the actual vineyard rows, because these areas may contain rattlers. Even in towns with lots of foot traffic like Yountville or Healdsburg.
  • Fall, winter, and early spring can be rainy . If you travel to wine country during November to March, if possible, bring a pair of cute waterproof boots.
  • If you’re in a bind on what to wear, I’ve had really good experiences with Rent the Runway.

One of my favorite dresses I’ve worn out in Napa that I rented through RTR. Such a beautiful pattern.

Dress with autumn colors for a wine tasting outfit idea.

Do wineries have dress codes?

Unlike restaurants, wineries do not have dress codes, but, here’s the thing: depending on the tasting room or winery you visit, you may want to put a little more oomph into your outfit.

If you’re going to a high-end wine tasting in Napa that is $200 a person, you will want to leave the jean jacket (and the denim) at the hotel room and opt for something just a bit more upscale.

On the other hand, if you’re checking out one of the laid-back, but fabulous downtown Los Olivos wine tasting rooms , you can get away with a cute flannel and knee-high boots combo, a fall dress, or just about anything, depending on the season.

Wine Tasting Outfits For Her

Women can never go wrong with a sundress or light blouse paired with some stylish jeans or pants—all depending on the weather and type of occasion.

I recommend checking the winery’s dress code before visiting a winery. One of my favorite things to do is look the winery up on Instagram and see what people are wearing when they tag the winery in their photos. This can be so helpful!

Once you’ve got the outfit down, throw on some wedges or sandals if it’s hot outside, and if it’s chilly, opt for a cardigan or jean jacket over your ensemble.

Make sure whatever you choose is something you’re comfortable wearing for hours at a time so that you can really enjoy yourself without worrying about an uncomfortable outfit all day long!

I’ve broken down this guide by season to help you figure out what to wear to a winery, no matter the season.

Winter Wine Tasting Outfit Ideas

Winter wine tasting is all about finding the right pairing of varietals and your style.

Winter offers a wide array of choices for clothing; from cozy sweaters to long dresses, the possibilities are endless. Invest in dark colors such as navy, black, and gray for a polished look or opt for bright colors to make your outfit stand out.

Layer it up with a leather jacket and some tall boots to beat the chill without sacrificing on style. Accessorize the outfit with seasonal pieces such as wool scarves, funky hats, statement rings and necklaces – whatever you choose is sure to complement the flavors of your favorite Winter wines!

Summer Wine Tasting Outfit

Summer is a great time to enjoy a nice glass of wine and partake in some outdoor wine tastings! Whether you’re heading to a picnic at a winery or are sipping away with friends on the luxurious Napa patios, choosing the right outfit to match the afternoon can be tricky.

Summer wine-tasting outfit ideas should include a breathable fabric, like lightweight cotton or loose linen.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes – you’ll want to be able to stroll through the vineyards during the tasting!

For bottoms, a breezy skirt will provide relief from the hot summer sun. I’d generally recommend avoiding shorts, unless they’re trend pieces, as wineries tend to be too formal for jean shorts.

As for tops, something that’s lightweight and can easily transition from day to night is your best bet (e.g., rompers and dressy/boho blouses).

During this time of year, I love a good maxi dress, and it’s always in style to wear white!

For an extra touch of style, pop on a wide-brimmed hat and add some bold accessories too. Personally, I love My Wine Hat , which provides stylish protection for my skin.

With these winery outfit ideas, you’ll look just as good as the wines you’re tasting this summer!

Fall Wine Tasting Outfit

The fall season is the perfect time for a wine tasting, and no one wants to come unprepared! When putting together your fall wine-tasting outfit, think casual yet polished.

Natural fabrics in fall colors like mustard yellow, burgundy, and hunter green can help you create a look that will be comfortable but still make you feel your best. Light knits, lightweight blazers, and cardigans over soft tees, cropped trousers, or sweater dresses combined with fall booties make for chic yet comfortable fall outfits that are ideal for sipping wine all day long.

Don’t forget a cute felt hat to add a touch of playfulness – after all, it’s always more fun when we dress up!

Spring Wine Tasting Outfit

Spring is here, and if you’re anything like me, you’re already dreaming of a day spent wine-tasting in the sunshine. The dilemma? What to wear!

Spring wine tasting calls for an outfit that’s both stylish and practical—you need to be comfortable enough to enjoy your surroundings while still looking pulled together. During spring time in wine country, there can be huge shifts between daytime and nighttime temperatures, so layers are a MUST!

Strike the perfect balance by opting for light layers that will keep you warm when the temperature takes a dive, picking colors that are sure to pop against the greenery, and adding chic accessories for a cheery finishing touch. Personally, I love pairing a denim jacket with a midi dress!

No matter what look you choose, a casual-yet-fun Spring wine tasting outfit is sure to make this season even more memorable!

Accessories

This is where you can express yourself and have fun! Scarves are always a great accessory to add a bit of color and texture to your outfit without going overboard.

Sunglasses are also an essential item when out wine tasting—not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, but they also provide an extra layer of privacy for those who want to get away from it all (and maybe enjoy an extra glass of vino).

My favorite wine tasting accessory is my Wine Hat — this gorgeous hat keeps my skin safe from the sun while looking so, so stylish! Plus, they’re created by a women-led small business!

Lastly, don’t forget to bring along a fashionable bag that can hold all of your essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, water bottle etc., while also adding another layer of style to your look!

Wine Tasting Outfits For Him

Guys should start with a dress shirt or polo that is comfortable but still looks somewhat put together.

Wine tasting in Napa Valley tends to be more formal, so guys should wear nice pants. If you’re wine-tasting somewhere more casual, such as Oregon or Idaho , nice jeans or even shorts could work well. Research the winery ahead of time and look at who’s tagged them in their Instagrams for an idea of what people tend to wear here.

Wineries that are more outdoorsy and laid back, especially if you’re going for a picnic will be okay with shorts.

Wineries with formal tasting rooms and higher price tags generally command more formal attire as well.

If the weather is cool, grab a light jacket or sweater to keep warm during the outdoor tastings.

Lastly, don’t forget your shoes! A nice pair of leather loafers or boat shoes will do the trick and look great with any outfit.

What to Wear to a Winery: Perfect Outfits + Practical Tips

  • Updated October 7, 2022

girl walking through a vineyard in yellow dress example for what to wear to a winery in summer

If you’re headed to a winery, what should you wear? The answer might seem obvious – after all, it’s not like you’re going to a black tie event. But there are still some things to keep in mind when choosing what to wear to a winery. In this article, we’ll give you outfit ideas, no matter what the season or which wine region you visit.

Our editors have been to vineyards and wineries all over the world. No matter the region or destination, what people wear to wineries doesn’t really change much. It’s only the season and the weather that are most important to consider.

If you have booked a wine tour or tasting, be sure to read the basics of what to expect at your winery visit, plus all the outfit suggestions below!

The Basics: What to Expect at a Winery and How to Dress

When it comes to picking an outfit for visiting a winery, there are some basic considerations you should make, regardless of the season.

  • There is no official dress code at wineries. That being said, you still want to be practical and respectful. Keep your outfit classy and casual. No flip flops, and save the workout clothes for the gym.
  • Rural location: Wineries are often in rural locations. That means gravel and dirt roads and pathways. Keep your dress whites at home, unless you know you’re visiting a highly manicured property.
  • Vineyard Tour : If you’re doing a tour of the vineyard, you will walk through the vineyard, which is essentially a farm. Depending on the weather, this could include mud, dirt, plants, etc. Wearing white shoes is not advisable, and leave the stilettos at home.
  • No scents: Wine tasting requires you to smell the wine, and bringing scents into a winery is a big no-no. This includes strong perfume (ideally none at all), essential oils, strongly scented lotion, scented hand sanitizer, baby wipes, etc. If you can smell it, it will negatively affect the wine tasting experience for everyone in the room.
  • Winery Tours: Wineries can be messy operational facilities, especially during harvest. Grapes are being transported and crushes, juice is moved around, floor are hosed down and often wet. Wine cellars are fairly chilly as well. Even if you didn’t book a tour, prepare to tour one just in case and wear comfortable shoes that you aren’t going to be too precious about.
  • Wine Tasting Only: If you’re only going to be tasting wine inside a tasting room (at the winery or in a city tasting room), you can wear the same type of clothing you would wear to lunch at a restaurant. If you’re going to wine country, wine tastings are often done outside when the weather is nice.
  • Don’t forget sun protection: You might be outside for a bit, tasting, touring or both. Make sure to take sunscreen to protect yourself. Once you start tasting, you might forget! Alternatively, bring a sun hat.

Winery Outfit Ideas

Below are some specific suggestions for casual winery outfits by season. Wine tasting outfits are ultimately up to you and your style, but these are meant to give you some inspiration. Most wineries and wine tasting rooms are casual, so unless the winery has specifically sent dress code information, casual is a safe assumption.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer (Hot Weather)

There are lots of options when it comes to how to dress at a winery in the summer. First, check the weather for your wine country destination. Some wine regions may even require you to wear layers in the summer. Even if it doesn’t cool off outside at all, you might find yourself in a cold wine cellar for 20 minutes on a tour.

For example, a perfect wine tasting outfit for summer in Napa Valley or California wine country is probably a floral midi dress with comfortable sandals and a denim jacket for night when it cools off.

Outfits like flowy dresses, a crisp white t-shirt with a cute skirt or lightweight printed pants are perfect for summer in wine country.

You can wear sandals, just pick some that feel sturdy on uneven ground. You don’t want to be carried out of the vineyard after twisting an ankle!

For men, a collared shirt is always a good choice. In the summer, you can wear a short-sleeved button down or polo. Linen is a great summer fabric. A polo shirt or a long sleeve linen top (sleeves rolled) with chino pants or jeans are both good options for men to wear to a winery.

A button up top and jeans is a classic look for anyone. In summer, the shirt could be a crisp white poplin or linen shirt is most classic. The key is to look relaxed and casual though, not like you’re going to a stuffy office.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting in the Fall or Spring

If you are wearing jeans, consider pairing with a denim shirt in a similar color. This is a simple outfit but you will always look put together in it. If rain is in the forecast, layer a trench over it.

Ankle boots are fall staples and a flannel shacket is a good layer for fall. Temperatures can swing in the fall, so layers are key. A nice pair of work boots are a go-to shoe in fall for anyone.

Maxi dresses and light sweaters, and complimentary colors to the changing colors on the vines are great for photos in fall!

What to Wear to Wine Country in the Winter (Cold Weather)

In the winter, temps can vary based on location. As always, check the weather that week.

Not all wine regions are uncomfortably cold in winter. For instance, Sonoma County and most of California wine country is quite mild. A leather jacket over a maxi dress and a cute pair of ankle boots is a nice way to dress up for a winery in winter. Some days, you might not even need the jacket!

In contrast, if you’re headed to a wine region that gets snow, you’ll need to plan accordingly.

Some other popular outfit choices for women in winter are:

  • Warm sweater with jeans and ankle boots
  • Sweater dresses with tall or riding boots make a simple outfit.

Just remember, winter can also be more rainy in some destinations, so the ground might be muddy in areas. It’s not the time to wear your fresh white sneaks.

It’s also smart to bring a wool beanie for cold winter days. Black crewneck sweater, a nice pair of brown work boots, dark jeans, hat (ball cap or beanie). Classic look.

Wearing a Purse in Wine Country

If you plan to take a bag or purse, a crossbody purse is a good option to wear wine tasting. Something small that allows you to be hands free while wine tasting is what you’re after.

An alternative option would be a good solid leather or canvas tote bag, especially if you’re bringing the kids. You will want to bring some distractions, like books and [quiet] games.

Wearing White in Wine Country

Don’t be afraid to wear white in wine country. White dresses with pretty floral prints or white linen tops are perfect for summer. Beware you might end up sitting at a rustic picnic table outside with a red wine glass sitting on a not-so-flat surface. Get the picture? So, there is a level of risk wearing white. However, white looks sharp in summer and you only live once! If you’ll be worried the whole time, it’s safer to wear something else.

Wine Tasting Attire FAQ

What is wine country casual.

Wine country casual is a term used by some stylists to describe looks that seem relaxed yet still put-together, appropriate for the farm, but more dressy than if you were actually working on the farm.

What type of shoes should I wear to a winery?

The type of shoes you wear to a winery will depend on the outfit. The most important thing is that you wear shoes that are comfortable, since you might be doing a bit of walking. Remember, you might be walking through vineyards or touring a winemaking facility that has a wet floor.

Flat sandals or mid-heel sandals with thicker soles, sneakers, loafers, and boots are great. Really high heels are definitely a bad idea. Avoid flip flops as they look sloppy and aren’t great for walking through tall grass or gravel paths.

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes, you can absolutely wear jeans. Overall, you want to wear casual clothing. In fact, it is one of the most popular choices for both men and women. Vineyards are a type of farm, and wineries can be messy operations during harvest. Consider something lighter than jeans in the summer, as it can be quite hot. For example, linen pants or shorts would be a great choice.

Final Thoughts

Whatever you decide to wear, don’t fret too much about it! After all, you’ll be in a nice winery setting tasting delicious wine and taking in the view with friends. It’ll be a great day no matter what you are wearing.

Fall Wine Tasting Outfit Ideas for 2023

When visiting a winery in fall 2023, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Consider the type of winery you’ll be visiting . If it’s a casual winery, jeans and a sweater will suffice. However, if it’s a more upscale winery, you’ll want to dress up a bit more. A nice blouse or dress is always appropriate.
  • Consider the activity you’ll be doing at the winery . If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking, comfortable shoes are a must. Loafers, boots, or flats are acceptable, but avoid anything with very high heels as you’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet.
  • Don’t forget to bring along a jacket or scarf. The temperature can drop quickly in the fall, so it’s always good to be prepared.

A long wool coat is a must for autumn days, and you can wear a long-sleeved tee or fine-knit sweater underneath so that you can stay warm even if you take your coat off. We love the animal print skirt here for a bold and playful fall look, although you can never go wrong with warm, neutral tones for a fall winery outfit.

Black sweater, trousers, + flats.

All black is the perfect way to go for a chilly day at the winery. Start with an cozy sweater and wide-leg pants. A pair of two-tone flats ties in the look nicely on a warmer fall day.

However, if you’ll be experiencing cooler weather, add a black wool coat and swap out the flats for ankle boots to finish the look.

Leather midi skirt + knee-high boots.

A brown leather skirt is a perfect addition to your fall closet. For a day at the winery, add a cream-colored turtleneck and finish the look with knee-high boots.

When the weather is warmer, you can wear a skirt with a short sleeve shirt or a silk cami. And for cooler weather, add tights and a long wool coat which will give you extra warmth while still looking chic and put together.

Wool blazer + tall  lug boots.

Woman wearing black leggings, black riding boots, a brown blazer coat and a brown sweater.

A wool blazer and tall boots are perfect for a winery in November. The jacket will keep you warm and makes for a great layering piece. On warmer days, remove the jacket or swap it out for a lighter version. On cooler days, add a wool fedora in a matching neutral color.

The tall boots pull the whole outfit together and give a very equestrian look. You can also swap out the boots for ankle booties and still look classy.

What do you wear to a winery when it’s cold?

A cozy sweater set or sweater dress is perfect for a cold day at a winery. If you’ll be inside most of the time, you can wear a pair of stylish pumps like the photo above. But, if you’ll be outdoors too, go with a pair of knee high boots.

When the temperatures really drop, layer the dress with a camel wool coat for a monochromatic look. And, don’t forget to wear tights to keep your legs warmer.

Over-the-knee boots + wool jacket.

Woman wearing skinny jeans, over the knee boots, a tan sweater and a black blazer coat.

Over-the-knee boots are a perfect addition to the fall winery outfits list. They keep your legs warm and look great with a pair of jeans and a neutral sweater.

Add a wool coat or blazer for a more polished look (and extra warmth) . You can also wear this outfit on a warmer day by swapping the jeans for a suede mini skirt and removing the blazer.

Moscow tasting of Bordeaux 2009 – and thoughts on Moscow (with video!)

June 5, 2012

Bordeaux 2009 revisited, in Moscow

At the Bolshoi

Go directly to the tasting notes  (tasted on Friday, 1 June 2012)

You have to love Moscow, a great city of some 15 million people, many coming from the outstretched nine time zones of the former Soviet Union. Uzbekis, Tadjikis, Georgians, Ukrainians. All coming to try to make it big in the big city, as the Sinatra song goes for New York.

Thoroughly elegant metro stations in Moscow

If I can make it here, can make it anywhere.

Tax rates are flat at 13% for all, whether you make pennies, whether you are a fat rich oligarch. But that is the official cost of doing business. From what I have heard, the “unofficial” cost involves paying a certain syndicate to keep you out of harm’s way … whether from corrupt officials – or from competitors who fabricate a story, pay for false witnesses, and pay off the judge to take you to Court and put you in jail.

Wild West Capitalism in the former Land of Lenin.

Canon .... and Lenin

Full of contrasts, like the Soviet hammer and sickle decorating one metro station, with a bank machine just underneath. Or a Burger King near an enormous statue of Lenin.

Burger King near a statue of Lenin

Moscow is the only city I have been to so far where you can so easily flag down an unprofessional taxi. And those drivers range from an Uzbeki in a run down Lada to a Siberian in a spanking new Saab. The prices are very cheap, and if you reject one driver, a second one is invariably there, ready to accept your price. Some people worry about being picked up by a criminal, but my intrepid journalist pal Benoit Finck – Moscow correspondent for Agence France Presse – has been doing this for four years so far here with nary a problem…

At the posh high rise restaurant "Sixty" with Corinne and Katia and Benoit

English is hardly spoken here, even from most young people. So if you want to live in Russia, Russian is essential. But what an enriching experience for a foreign correspondent: learning new cultures, a new language and having fun.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior: Destroyed by Stalin, rebuilt under Yeltsin

This is my second visit in three years – and again in May/June – so the weather is fine. The notion of service however is often not. Unless if you go to an upscale place like White Rabbit , where the food and service are quite decent, even though waiters have a tendency to grab your plate or glass before you are really finished. But then again, this is a bit of a cliché. Because I enjoyed good service in several varied locations, from a café just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to a fun English style pub near the Arbat pedestrian zone, one of the very few such car free parts of the city…

The Gum Department store near the Kremlin

There is no shortage of great monuments, museums and things to see of course. From the impressive Gum department store and the famous Kremlin and Red Square, to the Novodevichy Convent, probably the best-known cloister of Moscow. Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens’ Monastery , was devised to differ from an ancient maidens’ convent within the Kremlin. Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Shostakovich, decomposed

The adjoining cemetery includes some famous dead Russians, from Gogol and Shostakovich to Yeltsin and Tupolev.

Of course going to the Bolshoi is a fine treat. The murderous Stalin may have done one decent thing in his life: he made ballet and theatre inexpensive, so that “the people” could see culture. When he was not killing people, at least they had cheap tickets to great art. That was the case for me when I saw  Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich. Ironically, Stalin despised the musical as too bourgeois and had the great composer blacklisted: cheap tickets so long as you pleased the party. Whatever the case may be, it was very interesting to go to the Bolshoi, enjoy an opera by Shostakovich and then see his grave at the national cemetery. I am not a huge opera fan, but it – along with ballet – is certainly something to see in Moscow.

Elegant setting at Cafe Mart

Anyway, although wealthy oligarchs and corrupt officials seem to run Russia these days, it is a far better place indeed than during the Stalin era. For example. And I met several Russian people who work in various jobs that are as normal as anywhere else, from a friend who does risk assessment for businesses and a banker, to a wine journalist and an optometrist’s assistant.

Cubist Orthodox Moscow

Another place worthy of visiting is the Tretyakov National Gallery, where one can see how talented Russian artists at the beginning of the 20th century were influenced by French Post Impressionism: with Gaugin-like paintings, and later Cubism. It was cool for example to see a rendition of Moscow Orthodox churches in a Cubist format (see above). Then of course came the years leading up to the Revolution of 1917, and a corresponding wave of creativity, including Kandinsky’s non representational art and Malevich’s “Suprematism”.

But let’s get down to the wine, shall we? I am supposed to write an article for Wine Business International on Bordeaux and the Russian market. Challenges that importers face (Russia has a notorious bureaucracy), high taxes (and other costs) that make a 10-euro wine in France cost 60 euros in Russia!

The Bordeaux 2009s were tasted by hundreds of Russian importers, sommeliers, and writers. There was a visceral excitement to the tasting at the lovely and luxurious Lotte Hotel. An inauspicious start with name tags that could not be found, in spite of having registered quite a while ago, but the Russians were very kind. We asked to have new badges made.

The wines (in bold , I liked; red and bold even more, when underlined , tops)

Bordeaux at the Lotte Hotel

The wine of the tasting was Chateau Haut Bailly . As much as the Pichon Comtesse had blown me away in Dusseldorf, it was the Haut Bailly that stole the show in Moscow. Magnificently opulent, yet with fine structure, balance and freshness. Probably, it will not turn out as good as the 2010, but a superb 2009. Tasted twice. As in Dusseldorf, I experienced both weight and substance. Violet aromas. Richness on the palate, with a healthy tonicity, and a long finish. It seems to have opened up more this time around, a few months later.

By comparison, Chateau Pape Clement upped the richness, but one could also feel a sense of oak and alcohol, by comparison. Certainly an impressively made wine, and it has earned plaudits from Parker, but it lacks the nuance needed to be a star wine. For my taste.

Chateau Malartic Lagraviere displays a very smooth tobacco leaf aroma, with a rich palate – so much the characteristic of 2009. There is refinement here. Not as modern if you will as Pape Clement, but the 14% is felt. Just a touch. Still, I liked it, too.

I had a similar feeling with Chateau Latour Martillac , also very smooth, with a headiness coming from the 14%, while Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion had just a bit more flavor intensity. It was served just a touch too warm, so the alcohol was also felt, but the richness was delicious.

One of the problems was temperature, as the alcohol in the wines was felt more than necessary. Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte was served very cold however, a good strategy. Its label read 14.5% so for all I know, it could have been closer to 15%. But the cooler temperature was perfect, because the wine was smooth and lovely. Again, the success was echoed in my tasting in Dusseldorf. Is this 100 points? What does that mean, really? It is a success, to be sure, in 2009.

White Graves

As for the whites, I really liked Chateau Latour Martillac , with just 30% new oak, used only for the Semillon, it displayed precision and freshness more than the other whites I had tried. Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion’s 100% new oak was felt but not a l’outrance , and what I liked most was the peach and citrus aspects – it was fresh, too, mind you, with an overall appealing flavor profile. In the meanwhile, I was mildly disappointed with Chateau Malartic Lagraviere and Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte whites, which seemed a bit stolid. They seemed to lack the freshness levels of the preceding wines. Could it have been a temperature issue? I am not sure.

The Saint Emilions I tried were all good, although I was not as excited as I was with the better Left Bankers. Still, I liked Chateau Canon quite a bit even though 14.5% alcohol. Chateau Figeac was also particurarly delicious. A nice surprise here was Chateau Franc Mayne , which was succulent, but also pleasingly fresh enough for the vintage.

Figeac 2009, tasted in Moscow

Moulis-Haut Medoc-Medoc

Two fine Moulis here. I preferred the Chateau Maucaillou to the Chateau Chasse Spleen today.

Some Haut Medocs impressed me quite a bit, and let’s start with Chateau Camensac , which has been, more often than not, rather average. But in 2009, an excellent job. Lovely perfume, fine Cabernet-driven fruit. Delicious and certainly not very expensive.

Chateau La Lagune displayed a very fresh nose, fine depth and was overall excellent – and once again confirmed its excellent performance when tasted in Dusseldorf in March this year. Again, well integrated 14% alcohol, its 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot and … 10% Petit Verdot revealed rich blackberry and plum fruit, rich overall, but not marmalade or jam. A wine that also has fine structure.

I particularly was impressed with Chateau de Lamarque , which although it shows 14.5% on the label, it is closer to 15%. Somehow, the wine did not come across as alcoholic, although one could feel a certain drying on the finish, but it was just barely perceptible. The flavors were delicious and above all it showed fine charpente/structure. Another highlight, although not quite as exciting as the previous entries, was Chateau Coufran .

Chateau La Tour de By in Medoc was merely good enough, reflecting more its pedigree than the outstanding nature of the vintage.

Bordeaux producers after the tasting

Chateau Giscours is a wine that does very well in the Russian market, and I need to figure out why… Although I enjoyed it, I found myself liking Chateau Du Tertre more in this tasting, as I had had the same experience in Dusseldorf. Du Tertre kicks ass in 2009, displaying more freshness and even more density, as well as its famous spicy aspects, which were particularly successful in 2009.

Chateau Labegorce proved succulent in this vintage, once again showing a very positive aspect that I had experienced in Dusseldorf in March. On the other hand, Chateau Lascombes was, again, a bit too oak-derived for my taste, as was the Chateau Prieure Lichine. I came away quite impressed with a certain “civilized” aspect coming from the Chateau Rauzan-Gassies , which is a somewhat controversial estate in that they are just fine with 50% mechanical harvesting. For many people, anathema when it comes to a cru classe, no less a 2 nd growth. But co-owner Anne Francoise Quie insists that they master the technique and carry out selection after the picking on sorting tables. In any case, the 2009 is a success for this estate, which is not as expensive as others. A QPR opportunity? As for Chateau Rauzan Segla , which I really liked en primeur, I found the wine a bit closed in on itself, although the nose was very fine and fresh. The palate starts rich but then clamps down on the finish… Speaking to some other owners/reps present, some 2009s are indeed starting to close down. Not many, but some. Give this one more time, and it should develop very well in bottle.

I was a touch underwhelmed by Chateau Beychevelle, which although very solid, came across as somewhat discheveled. The tannins were just a bit large grained and a hint of alcohol was peeking through, although perhaps that was due to a slightly warm temperature?

Chateau Gruaud Larose on the other hand was excellent, and perhaps the best of the St Juliens that I tried at this tasting. A toasty richness on the nose as well as the palate which, most important, displayed an inner juiciness that proved very appealing. Fine job.

The Chateau Leoville Poyferre by contrast seemed rather foreboding, with tannins coming to the fore, although it was also rich and toasty – some oak influence still present – and voluminous on the palate. I am certain that aging in bottle will translate this wine into something special. Like the Rauzan Segla, it seems to have closed down a tad.

Another wine that impressed me was Chateau Lagrange , which displayed an almost Margaux florality on the nose, followed up by a medium bodied elegant palate, suave, albeit tightening up on the finish – 2009 was quite a tannic vintage, one must emphasize, in spite of the richness and ripeness.

Fine Batailley, tasted in Moscow!

Kudos to Chateau Batailley . Here is a wine that is getting better and better. I recall enjoying the 2008 from bottle in New York – and the 2007, by the way. And here we have a “gangbusters” 2009, displaying excellent “ripe graphite” aspects, a tannic edge but rounded overall, fine grained, and long. A QPR to be sure, considering the fact that a rival like Grand Puy Lacoste will cost almost twice as much.

Chateau Clerc Milon , though good, was by contrast not as expressive – another one of those 2009s that has closed down a bit. But the volume and the potential are there to make this wine special with a few years of bottle age. Certainly Chateau d’Armailhac is more open, and more pleasing now, with a smoother delivery and softer aspects. But I suspect that Clerc Milon will outdistance it.

A fine surprise was Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse , which at 14% alcohol (60% CS and 40% M) displayed a dark fruit richness, and a smooth delivery, although a certain high alcohol Merlot aspect was present. Still, another QPR. Not as good as Batailley, but very good nonetheless.

Chateau Lynch Moussas was pretty, I suppose, but thoroughly overshadowed by the far superior Batailley.

Once again, as I had experienced at Dusseldorf three months ago, the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was brilliant, with nuanced elegance combined with that 2009 richness. Although I must say that I got the impression of greater tightness here.  Was it just starting to close down a bit, compared to three months ago? I wonder.

Post tasting dinner at French Restaurant Carre Blanc in Moscow

Saint Estephe

Chateau Lafon Rochet is solid St Estephe, with some tannic austerity but lots of stuffing and body. Give it much needed time in bottle, and you will be rewarded with an excellent QPR. But just as I had experienced in Dusseldorf, Chateau Phelan Segur was even better, displaying a lovely nose of black fruit, with a juiciness and fine body. An excellent QPR and a wine to seek in 2009.
