TRAVELING WITH PRINCESS AS A SINGLE PERSON

Cool Cruiser

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

Here’s a few words on singles cruising alone.

For many singles, the losing of a beloved mate doesn’t mean cruising has ended.   It remains within reach, albeit, delayed because of a recent tragedy and loss.   To survive, one must push on, get happy again, focus the mind on great joys just ahead.   For you and I who cruised with mates who loved cruising, too, we must carry on for us and in memory of them.   Cruising in our lives was meant to be.    So, let’s get aboard and shove off.   For me, I join the 16-day Fire and Ice Adventure London to NYC on 23 July, 2020.

That above opening statement illustrates my situation as a devotee of all things cruising who now travels as a single senior male in search of the joys just ahead.   Since I dislike going places alone, I’m always looking for a friendly female face, a senior like me, who, too, likes company.   I did exactly seek out people alone and friendly on my cruise from SF to Hawaii and back last month.   See my travelogue below as my introduction and for pictures of me.   I joined different ladies at dinner, at coffee in the International Café, and just chatted with them in various places while onboard.

The several ladies filled a void for me.   The wonderful Grand Princess, and my suite, plus those many perks did the rest.   I came home a ‘lifted’ person.

There are many of "us" in this same boat.  I wish that there was a way of introducing ourselves so that we wouldn't have to sail alone.  Way back when....they used to have single guarantees.  Very nice write up of Hawaii.  One of my favorite places on earth.  Grew up there, sailed there, semi-retired there...

Happy cruising

My dear cr8tiv1 - quite a title there, cr - thanks for the comments.  I'm one year beyond my loss of my one and only love and I got my head up again due in major part to the great responses I got from three beautiful ladies.  They were slightly younger than me; they being in their mid-80s each with love stories of their own.

Princess hosted two 1-hour sessions for veterans and they were well attended.  They allowed we war guys to intro one another and to simply converse.  More could have easily been done with the program with very little forethought.  It was Princess' way to say thanks to we who served.  I mention this because I think something to bring singles together could be promoted easily, too.  Perhaps my chat here which caught YOUR eye will nab others, as well.

"Hi there, cr, how about joining me tonight for dinner and talk?"

BTW...my avatar is a photo of the Grand Princess from the observation deck of Aloha Towers, Honolulu.

Jack, enjoyed reading your journal of your recent sailing on the Grand.

Were you not informed of one of the 'favorite ' perks for passengers booked in a suite on Princess,  which is breakfast in one of the specialty restaurants? The breakfast includes any specialty coffees and mimosa's desired. You do not mention ever going and only note  visits to 'Lido' early in the morning. Also in the future, if you ever book a suite again, you are entitled to complimentary room service of the entire dining room menu during normal dining hours, in case you do not feel like leaving your stateroom or just too tired.

Did you also also take advantage of the perk of complimentary laundry services?

I hope you are able to experience another cruise soon.

I missed some perks and a few of those you mentioned now.  I go again in July, in a suite, and I will tick off the perks that are mine to enjoy.  No more missing the goodies.  See my son Brian in the photo enjoying his half of the suite.  Incidently, he got nailed for $600 worth of phone calls when he got home.  He thinks he may have left open one of his few calls to his wife for a few hours.  Thanks WallyJ!

Oh this topic is near and dear to my heart.

I have been doing solo cruising since 1980 when I was in my late twenties.

I developed a love of ships having watched the Love Boat and I did one with my Dad in 1977 (Oceanic)

He passed in 1980 and since various friends and family could not or would not travel, I decided to go on my own.

I alternated between cruises, Walt Disney World, and Bus tours through Europe.

I travel to see the world and to learn and take photos.  It has become more difficult in the last 7 years given social media and smartphones.  Folks have all the friends they can handle since it is easier to keep in touch.

So I take my books (real) and my coloring books and Word Search and park myself somewhere. Eventually folks will stop and chat.  I like to look at the water and see other ships at sea and in port.

I do not drink alcohol (perhaps 1 wine) nor do I gamble.  I love Trivia but since no one is very inviting, I just sit and listen and learn.

So  years ago having lost both parents before I turned 25, I learned to to just go and not care who stares or feels sorry if I am alone.  I have fun watching folks bicker among themselves or parents arguing and angry with kids.  I just smile and glad I am alone.

In the end I see more folks travelling solo and NCL has those wonderful Studios.

Think of it this way, There are folks in hospitals or nursing homes who can't travel and would love to trade places with any of us who get to travel .

I sometimes feel sorry for folks who are afraid to be alone and think ya have to have others around to have fun.  so they do without taking vacations and stay home. I meet folks and chat and enjoy the time spent.

See if his phone provider will negotiate the phone charges. Many passengers forget to set thier phones back to 'airplane' mode after leaving US ports like Alaska and Hawaii and incur roaming fees.

Club class dining is avaible everyday for breakfast and dinner and for lunch on sea days. If in a suite, most passengers do not miss the specialty restaurant breakfast where everything is made to order. Also mimosa's can be made with your choice of juices or plain champagne if desired. I enjoy a bowl of fresh berries and add some to my mimosa.

if you have not researched already, the foreign port stop requirement is the result of the PSVA, passenger services vessels act, not the Jones act.

The princess website details all the benefits afforded suite passengers if you have further questions.

I'm  a single cruiser too and I watch out for particularly American wives or partners claiming their errant one with an invisible chain. They may dress them in the same colours, they may walk around the ship one behind the other with arms firmly outstretched clasping their dearly beloved as if they are glued together. Keep off, mine, my territory: the body language says.  Dare the errant one if his loved one is not with him strike up a conversation with an obviously lone  female  particularly if say up to a decade or two younger . If the conversation is animated and smiling eye contact being made which mutually happens if conversation is flowing  ooh never fear hes being watched. Jealous eyes flash and in a jiffy the errant ones partner will be over to claim and drag the bad one away. "Come on,  what are you doing you know  we arranged to meet so and so"  "oh did we'? and the errant one, head bowed, meekly disappears on his chain . I just laugh. Sometimes if Ive finished ,just to be evil i will wait a couple of minutes and leave the area  very likely they are  still around but the danger has gone and they are doing different things. I just discreetly  try and catch  the eye of the male and smile  as I pass in the opposite direction.:)

You cracked me up with this post Minya.  Reminds me of a guy I worked with and his wife was so jealous if he talked to any woman.  They would be out walking and she would cross the street if they were walking towards me.  Guess what....two can play that game and I would cross the street and go up and say hi.  The stupid thing was their daughter and our daughter were really good friends so she knew I was happily married lol.  I think I would do what you do....always good for a chuckle.  I am now traveling solo for the first time in Feb. as my husband of 37 years just passed away.  I love to travel and will continue.

I wish you well in February, Cormike1.  I did the single bit last month for the first time and came home pleased.  I made new friends, shared dinners, and had marvelous chats with lady singles.  No boredoms and no loneliness allowed.  I shall continue my MO on my cruise in July with Island Princess.  See my Hawaii travelogue below.   Jack

Great reporting, OceansAway.  A good read.  You appear fearless and I hope you have decades ahead during which you never find yourself needing someone near and dear to get you up and going.  Finding yourself far from home and very sick or injured in someway stirs the fears more than a little for many.

Most cruises, particularly longer ones will have a time and place in Princess Patter for singles and solo cruisers to meet,  many people arrange to share  shore excursions with others or just get to know other people on their own.

30,000+ Club

I traveled alone for many years until my sister retired, so now I have a permanent partner.  When I was in my 20's and went on a Caribbean vacation, a slightly older cousin once asked how I could stand to do it alone.  I told her 'It's 100% better than not going at all!'  I did another solo cruise last month, because my sister and niece (they live with me) went north to visit two other daughters for around 10 days.  I ran away on Island Princess for 4 nights.  EM

A 4 day cruise is a little short for me but much better than sitting at home . . . alone.  Describe what you liked and disliked about Island.  I will be on it in July for 16 days.  Jack

THOUGHTS ON SINGLE TRAVELER MEETING

Per Gwendy above:  More than just meeting, these gatherings need a leader who gets people changing seats, perhaps moving the whispered message from person 1 to person 50 to see where the ending takes us.  How about a punch card tally to see how many paired off for dinners, excursions, and deck games.  Those with the most punches get small gifts from the ship's store purchased with group pocket money collected at the meeting.

To get people conversing, the men take one or two numbered cards from the male hat.  The ladies take the same numbered cards from their own hat. The first man stands, calls out a number and the lady with the same number responds.  They sit together.  In the event more ladies than men are at the meeting, the men draw a second number and that lady responds and joins him, too.  Where great differences between persons, i.e., a lady 29 joins a man 93, the leader adjusts as desired.

Future meetings of the group would discuss how traveling solo is going.

Patter is the place to announce such things.

I enjoyed reading your posts on your Hawaii cruise Jack.  I to take CC complainers with a grain of salt as the saying goes.  eople are always saying Carnival is a party cruise line for young party goers.  Well who is cruising late Sept. early Oct. on a Canada/New England cruise to see the leaf colours?  Certainly not the young party goers lol.  Your vacation is what you make it and I have enjoyed every cruise I have taken regardless of the cruise line.  My husband and I always asked to sit at a table with others if we were not cruising with friends, and loved chatting with others during meals.  I will continue to do that myself as I do enjoy meeting new people and hearing about different lifestyles.  It will be different traveling myself but I am looking forward to this new and different time in my life.  I know he is with me and encouraging me to do this so I will.  I enjoyed reading about how you made the best of everything to Jack.  By the way....the Island is a lovely small ship.  We have cruised on her a couple of times and really liked the size.  Happy traveling Jack!

10,000+ Club

Thanks for posting. Breakfast in Sabatini's was our favorite suite perk when we sailed in one on the Royal.

I sailed solo twice last year although my husband is still alive. He chose to go back to work in retirement. It's just part time and seasonal, so we did have a chance to cruise together this past fall on the Crown Princess's transatlantic cruise. On the two trips I took without him, I always requested to dine with others at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I met people by playing trivia. The singles and solos group wasn't well attended on my Alaskan trip, but I did meet a few nice people. We ended up meeting at the evening cocktail event for Platinum, Elite, and suite passengers instead of the singles and solos meetings. On my solo cruise last month, there were lots of folks who met for the singles and solos group. I did not attend regularly, but I joined the people at breakfast and lunch, at the wine tasting, and other activities around the ship.

Thank you, Cormike1, for the comments on my Hawaii travelogue.  Much appreciated regarding one of my favorite cruises of all time.  I've enjoyed all of them but this one on the ever so friendly Grand Princess was my best.  Things just came together.

I wish you well and many exciting moments on Carnival.  The time of year and those changing colors should be most satisfying.  As for the 'party-goers' surroundings you will face, I have to wonder the outcome.  Carnival does promote youth and good times and even provides the playground stuff topside.  Being up in years and still grieving the loss of a special person in my life, I'm seem more happy with crowds without children and quiet nights in the hallways after 10 pm.

I'm taken with Princess having been spoiled in November and December in my first suite and then with summer days in Hawaii.  Jack

Go-Bucks!

I've taken 5 solo cruises after traveling with a friend for many decades. There are pros and cons for going both ways, but people on cruises are generally friendly and easy to talk to so I haven't been lonely or bored when going solo.

Sometimes I attend the solo luncheons or get togethers...some are fun and others are a bust. We solos on the roll call for my next cruise have planned a dinner soon after embarkation. The cruise is 58 days long which can enable solos to get to know each other better than on a shorter cruise.

Although I enjoy spending  time with fellow passengers, I also like being able to go back to my cabin when I want some alone time. The worst part about going solo is paying the single supplement! Also, sometimes people organizing private tours won't accept a solo...they only want 2 people together...most don't do this but a few do.

I'm not a widow, but am glad that going solo has helped with the healing. Enjoy your travels! ☺️

A great read and thanks, Go-Bucks!  I occasionally looked for announcements in the Grand Princess newspaper regarding solo travelers and didn't see one.  True, I didn't look often given I was fully engaged with my two adult offspring.  So much to do and 15 days to do them.  Wonderful!

You must have felt the loss when your travel companion of several decades was no longer available.  You seemed to have adjusted nicely to adopting the solo role and, for you, life and cruising went forward.

I tossed in a photo of my blonde daughter (l), a lady friend in Hawaii, and me at a coffee plantation.  Jack

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Greece, Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, the Scarlet Lady boasts a collection of unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to nearly 2,150 square feet for the RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

The Scarlet Lady sails to destinations in the Caribbean, like the Bahamas , from Miami .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages.

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance (previously Carnival Victory) set sail in December 2021 after a full transformation. The ship, which holds 2,984 guests and 1,108 crew members, boasts plenty of fun indoors and outdoors for cruisers of all ages.

Carnival Radiance features a ropes course, waterslides, a mini-golf course, dive-in movies in the evening and a sports area for activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball and boxing. The ship also offers a kids club for youths ages 2 to 17. The pool is surrounded by lounge chairs – perfect for relaxing – and those seeking additional quiet space can spend some time at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.

Staterooms aboard the ship include Interior (porthole and picture window choices are available), Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category options. Carnival Radiance sets sail from Los Angeles to destinations in Hawaii and Mexico .

Oceania's Marina accommodates up to 1,250 passengers and employs 800 crew members, maintaining the personalized service that the line is known for.  Marina offers signature amenities like the Aquamar Spa, a casino and a 2,000-book library. Onboard entertainment includes nightly live shows, painting and sketching lessons at the Artist Loft and cooking demos at The Culinary Center. While Marina went through a refurbishment in 2016, the ship will have an updated renovation in late 2023.

Cruisers can choose from seven dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Jacques (with menus crafted by chef Jacques Pépin) and the Asian-inspired eatery Red Ginger, which recent passengers highly recommend.

Similar to its sister ship,  Riviera , cabins range from 174-square-foot Inside staterooms to 2,000-square-foot Suites. Higher category Veranda cabins and Suites come with perks like balconies, access to a Concierge Lounge, in-room iPads and more. All staterooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, full-size bathtubs, and minibars stocked with soda and bottled water.

Oceania Marina sails to destinations in Europe, South America and more.

More colorful than most of Holland America's fleet, Oosterdam launched in 2003 and was last updated in 2016. The 1,964-passenger ship houses 812 crew members, making the passenger-to-crew ratio roughly 2-to-1.

The ship features six stateroom categories: Inside, Ocean View, Verandah, Signature Suite, Pinnacle Suite and Neptune Suite. All accommodations are outfitted with Sealy-Premium Euro-Top mattresses, flat-screen TVs and plenty of storage space.

Like other Vista-class ships, Oosterdam   is equipped with a large pool and a sizable spa and fitness area, along with BBC Earth Experiences and sports courts. While there are kids and teens clubs for younger passengers, most of the activities and entertainment on the ship are geared toward adults.

When it's time to dine, guests can enjoy varied dishes in the main dining room, Italian fare at Canaletto or other options ranging from casual to fine dining.

Oosterdam departs from ports in  Fort Lauderdale , Buenos Aires , Rome , Athens and more. Itineraries include destinations in Europe, South America and Antarctica.

Nieuw Statendam

One of Holland America Line's newest cruise ships, Nieuw Statendam, launched in December 2018. This 2,666-passenger ship is the second in the line's contemporary Pinnacle Class collection. Like its sister ship, Koningsdam , this vessel places an emphasis on elegant, eye-catching design.

Along with its great aesthetics, Nieuw Statendam features a mix of engaging daytime and nighttime activities, as well as facilities designed to keep guests rested and relaxed. Passengers can unwind at the spa or pools, work up a sweat at the fitness center or pickleball court or participate in enriching activities like cooking demonstrations and wine-blending classes. At night, cruisers have several entertainment options, including the B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room or the World Stage for theatrical performances.

For dining, expect a mix of options, including a traditional dining room, casual spots and specialty restaurants that feature cuisines from Asia, France and – of course – Holland. Cabin categories are just as diverse: Accommodations range from Inside and Ocean View staterooms to Verandah staterooms to spacious suites with balconies and living areas.

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Members of Club Orange will also receive additional benefits when onboard Nieuw Statendam including a premium in-room breakfast menu and a private dining venue with an expanded menu.

Nieuw Statendam departs from Fort Lauderdale  and European ports in  Rome , Barcelona and more. It sails to various destinations in the Caribbean and Europe.

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're looking for a little outdoor privacy with pampering, book a cabana at The Retreat on one of the following ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Oosterdam, Rotterdam, Westerdam or Zuiderdam. The Retreat has double or family cabanas available to rent by the day or for the whole cruise, with an attendant for beverage and food service. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Grand Princess

First launched in 1998, the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess underwent a renovation in March 2019 that added new top-deck dining venues like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill and Coffee & Cones. The Princess Theater was also refreshed to provide a more immersive audio experience. Other onboard amenities include the adults-only Sanctuary, duty-free boutiques and educational programs through the Discovery of SEA program.

The ship houses numerous dining venues, including one main dining room, two specialty venues and a variety of casual eateries serving classics like burgers and pizza. Come nightfall, passengers can enjoy cocktails at their pick of lounges.

The recently refurbished accommodations are outfitted with amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges. Though only 76% of exterior cabins offer private balconies – a lower percentage than other ships in the fleet – guests describe cabins as comfortable and spacious. Plus, thanks to a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio (the ship features 1,150 crew members), past cruisers describe the onboard service as attentive and friendly. What's more, each guest aboard Grand Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Grand Princess sails to destinations worldwide, including Alaska, Hawaii , Australia, the California coast and the South Pacific.

Enchanted Princess

The 3,660-passenger, 1,346-crew member Enchanted Princess made its debut in November 2021. Part of the cruise line's MedallionClass, the ship features new technology and each cruiser is given an OceanMedallion wearable device. Cruisers can expect things like keyless cabin entry, contactless boarding, speedy Wi-Fi access (for a fee), food and drink delivery to anywhere on the ship and more.

With one main dining room, several casual eateries and four specialty dining venues – ranging from Italian to steak – guests will have no problem finding suitable spots to eat. As for entertainment, the Enchanted Princess offers musical productions, movie screenings under the stars, comedians, singers, magic acts, a casino, bars and more. Daytime activities might include playing a game of basketball or volleyball at the sports courts, relaxing in two deep tank pools and several hot tubs, or indulging in spa treatments at the Lotus Spa. The ship also has kids club offerings for youths ages 3 to 17.

When it comes to cabins, all Enchanted Princess staterooms are outfitted with flat-panel televisions, desks and minifridges. The lowest (and most affordable) cabin class, Interior, ranges from 158 to 162 square feet, while the roomiest option, Sky Suite, sprawls across 1,873 square feet of space. Several stateroom options also include balconies.

The Enchanted Princess is expected to sail around Mexico, the Caribbean, northern Europe and Canada and New England on its upcoming voyages.

Norwegian Prima

Norwegian Prima first set sail in October 2022 and can hold 3,099 guests and 1,506 crew members. The latest ship in the fleet includes many of the cruiser-favorite amenities and activities that are standard across Norwegian , plus a few more exciting additions.

Accommodations include Studios (perfect for solo travelers), and Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Club Balcony Suite and Suite staterooms. The Haven aboard the Norwegian Prima has been redesigned, with more spacious suites, upscale decor and The Haven's private sun deck. Outside their rooms, travelers will find plenty of dining options, including pub fare at The Local Bar & Grill, classic fare at the main dining room Hudson's, fine dining at The Commodore Room, international cuisine at Indulge Food Hall, casual eats at the Surfside Café & Grill and 24-hour room service, in addition to several specialty dining venues.

As far as activities go, cruisers can enjoy mini-golf, a racecar track, the water park and waterslides, plus games like darts, shuffleboard and pickleball. Those looking to relax can snag a lounge chair by the pool or book a treatment at the spa. Other options for fun include a casino, numerous bars and lounges, and a theater to enjoy musicals, concerts and The Price Is Right Live.

This Norwegian ship offers itineraries through the Mediterranean, northern Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean in the coming years.

Today’s Bonus Cruising Tip

I ALWAYS buy  travel insurance  (especially during these uncertain times) to cover my cruises, but I  NEVER purchase it through Princess. It costs more and usually covers less than policies you purchase on your own. I go through sites like  travelinsurance.com  to compare plans and prices and get the best deal for the coverage I want.  Spend less on insurance  and spend more on cocktails, excursions, special onboard cruise experiences, and…future cruises!

princess cruises singles at sea

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

At a glance

Popular with middle-aged couples, retirees and multigenerational families, the “Love Boat” line’s ships aren’t as flashy (or big) as those of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, and that’s just the way its customers like it. They enjoy the brand’s wide range of itineraries, which

include voyages in Asia and Australia, as well as closer-to-home places like the Caribbean. Princess has also been a longtime staple in the Alaska cruise market.

Best Cruises For Solo Travelers

Lady luck might finally smile on single cruisers! Cruise ship operators are tailoring their services to solo travelers looking for love at sea. From luxury amenities to keep passengers entertained throughout the trip to exciting programs encouraging mingling, this refreshed list adds two more exciting options to the best cruises for singles worth checking out.

Related: 12 Things We Won't See Again On Cruises By The Year 2030

Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Bliss offers comfort and privacy in equal doses. It has elegant studio staterooms that accommodate multiple solo cabins. A designated lounge for such travelers is stocked with beverages and snacks. This lounge offers extra privacy since only studio passengers can access this area. It also has numerous venues for active singles interested in mingling and keeping the party going.

Singles can indulge in group-oriented activities like racing others on the Bliss Speedway. Other activities include wine tastings at the Michael Mondavi Family Wine Bar or cocktails while engaging in great conversations at O’Sheehan’s Pub.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyage offers the perfect cruises for singles. The company typically accommodates travelers hoping to ditch the baby boomer’s way of cruising. From spectacular private beach bonfire parties to organic food choices and deluxe interior design, what else could solo travelers want from such a cruise? Virgin Voyages is famed for small-scale eateries, inventive modern performances, and a hundred percent complimentary Wi-Fi, unlike other cruises that offer buffets and Broadway-style musicals.

Discovery Princess

Whoever coined the term ‘paradise’ must have been in Discovery Princess. It features live auctions, a picturesque gallery to read through, and ship-wide public art displays. From attending dancing lessons to having epic nightlife and educational cocktail storytelling experiences, Discovery Princess will offer solo travelers endless activities to keep them making memories to last a lifetime.

Travelers will not have genuinely experienced Discovery Princess without sampling world cuisine from Michelin-star chefs and specialty coffees at the International Café in the European–style Piazza.

Holland American Line

This is a fantastic option for those embarking on solo travel around the world . But Holland is best suited for slightly older singles. These ships are the ultimate cruise for travelers hoping to mingle with mature and eligible solo travelers heading for a luxurious getaway. Here, the majority are divorcees or widowers.

Although it is a bit pricier than its counterparts, the quality is top-notch, and the services are out of this world. For instance, Holland American provides a restrained number of solo cabins on their most recent ships, which are more spacious than the Norwegian’s staterooms. They are also equipped with ocean-view windows.

Take advantage of Holland America's Club Orange amenities program to enjoy perks like a dedicated concierge line, complimentary stateroom upgrades, and an in-room breakfast menu.

Cunard Line

Cunard Cruise Line offers amazing singles-only cruises. However, it is a bit different from other cruises. Cunard ships, particularly the Queen Mary 11, are usually involved in more extended travel plans. Since the cruise entails numerous ocean crossings, more senior and refined travelers get attracted to the Cunard line. There is a considerable probability of singles finding each other on the Cunard Line since travelers have more sea days than port days.

Carnival Panorama

Carnival Panorama provides remarkable value for single cruisers. It has an exceptional variety for solo travelers in their 20s and 30s, thus making mingling incredibly seamless. From incredible deck dance parties to trivia competitions and social club parties, its general vibe is upbeat.

Solo travelers also tend to have incredible fun in the sun. The adults-only Serenity Deck is the ultimate escape from the frenzy of public venues. The lounge is only accessible to travelers above 21 years old and features sea-view hot tubs, luxurious loungers, and shaded cabanas for relaxation.

MSC Cruises

MSC is loved by the millennials, including lots of singles. Solo travelers will have more time to interact with a bigger mix of individuals as passengers keep boarding at different ports during a seven-night cruise in Europe. The singles will love the European vibe that incorporates late-night discos.

Nieuw Statendam

Solo travelers who love nature will have unforgettable moments aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam. The luxurious cruises through the Southern Caribbean are magical. Sunseekers will have incredible experiences at Amber Cove, a new port outside Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. The aquatic attraction offers breathtaking views and unique experiences. Cruisers can enjoy the swim-up bar and picturesque seaside cabanas at zero charge.

There are also seasonal cruises to check out; travelers can get the most out from cruise trips for the holiday season , for example. Alternatively, if they prefer to go solo backpacking around the world, globe-trotters can check out Hostelworld's new Roamies app designed for solo backpackers .

Royal Caribbean Ovation Of The Seas

Solo travelers using Royal Caribbean will be pleasantly surprised with the fun presented on this ship. The most notable feature of this Royal Caribbean singles cruise is the virtual window in the interior’s studio staterooms. The windows make it easy for travelers to experience everything outside that window while cruising. The solo studio option also entails an ocean-view stateroom with a balcony.

Royal Caribbean is also filled with intricate and unique surprises. Travelers can live a day unlike any other with a cruise to CocoCay, a private island destination in the Bahamas. Here, solo travelers can mingle as they indulge in fun activities such as ziplining, snorkeling, helium balloon riding, etc.

Remember to step into the North Star while cruising on the Ovation of The Seas. This unique rotating capsule offers stunning 360-degree views of the surroundings.

Uncruise Adventures

Uncruise Adventures is one of the best cruise ship options to leave adventurers with unforgettable memories. Their small size makes it seamless for singles to connect. The line provides travel plans to some incredible and remote places that have been nerve-wracking to even the major cruise lines. With Uncruise Adventures, solo travelers aren’t expected to pay for double occupancy.

Halong Bay Party Cruise

Take one's cruise to a new level with a dedicated cruise for young adults. The Halong Bay Party Cruise provides booze and music with plenty of activities. Enjoy being in the company of other fun-loving young people on a party cruise. Halong Bay is located in northeast Vietnam and is famous for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands with tropical rainforests. Activities include sightseeing, kayaking, swimming, rock climbing, beach volleyball, and more. The cost is around $160 for two days and one night.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is famous for attracting one of the youngest demographics in the industry. They have over two dozen "Fun Ships" that are jam-packed with party-related attractions. They have plenty of bars, open-air poolside deck parties, live music, and on the ships, Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon breweries. Imagine enjoying beer brewed onboard the cruise ship. They also boast some of the best nightclubs out at sea.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney's ships are known for their younger crowds - some are even dedicated to teens. Some of their boats, like Disney Fantasy, have clubs for teens and tweens. They can have karaoke, dance floors, and other activities. That being said, Disney's ships are better tailored to families with children - but some of their ships may be just what fun-loving solo travelers may be looking for.

Fiesta Party Cruise

Not all cruises need to be overnight. If one is going to Miami, consider marking on a nighttime Fiesta Party Cruise . Enjoy seeing Miami at night and dance to one's heart's content to the sound of the DJs while enjoying drinks from the onboard bar. They have multiple trips on Fridays and Saturdays. The cruises last from 9.30 pm to midnight; they also take more weeknight trips during the summer.

Celebrity Cruises

Another fantastic cruise line for singles is Celebrity Cruises. Generally, these ships offer a fun atmosphere, plenty of clubs and bars, and opportunities to meet new friends and singles onboard. It's also worth noting that various Celebrity Cruises ships offer single staterooms:

  • Celebrity Edge
  • Celebrity Apex
  • Celebrity Beyond
  • Celebrity Ascent

With these four cruise ships, single passengers can opt for their own little space, away from all the hustle and bustle of the main party decks and other suites. However, if a single person still wants to book a suite, all Celebrity ships have great options with solo queen or king beds. The destinations, including the Bahamas, Mexico, Europe, and even Alaska, are also quite fun.

There are plenty of things to do onboard a Celebrity Cruise and people to encounter! The brand recently unveiled its "Celebrity Beyond" ship , which may be the perfect next-stop for single vacationers.

Viking River Cruises

Another cruise line to consider for singles looking to mingle on the open waters is Viking. Generally, Viking River Cruises are smaller ships with fewer people, giving them a more intimate vibe. Many solo travelers recommend using Viking Cruises for vacationing, as the boat feels more like a community.

One thing to remember, however, is that Viking Cruises often run deals for two people, so it might be a fun idea to bring another single friend along for the ride. These boats usually have fewer spots to hang out beside the pool, restaurants, or bars, meaning everyone has to be together. Depending on someone's strategy for meeting new people onboard their cruise ship, this could mean better chances at a connection. It can't hurt to say hello and see where that takes everyone!

U River Cruises

Tailored towards millennials, this incredible cruise adopts a hip approach guaranteed to impress singles on an unforgettable 10-day river expedition. The sleek vessels offer exotic cruises around the world with a focus on Europe. And The River Princess is perfectly suited for solo travelers with romantic ambitions.

Its 128-passenger capacity offers a sense of privacy, sophisticated ambiance, and delightful public spaces to mingle with other singles. Passengers can check out the different lounges on the ship with a chance to meet other travelers over a glass of cocktail.

For cruisers who enjoy their own company, there is a library with interesting books to read.

Ruby Princess

Boasting unique amenities like movie screenings under the stars and soothing massages at the adult-themed Sanctuary, the Ruby Princess cruise sounds like the perfect cruise for couples. Still, solo travelers can get in on the fun. There's plenty of entertainment onboard, including duty-free shopping stores, a 9-hole putting course, and a fantastic Discovery at SEA program.

The exterior cabins offer dramatic balcony views, and the culinary options are as diverse as they are sumptuous. When darkness sets in, travelers get the opportunity to mingle at the casino or top-deck nightclub as they dance to the wee hours.

All 16 Princess Cruises Ships, From Newest to Oldest

Here’s everything you need to know about the Princess Cruises fleet.

princess cruises singles at sea

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Sailors of all ages love Princess Cruises for its quality, service, value, and serene style of cruising.  What’s more, the 2023 T+L World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line   — which is also a WBA Hall of Fame Honoree — tends to steer clear of splashy entertainment (for example, you won’t find go-karts, water slides, or ziplines on board most ships) in favor of more refined activities. Discovery at SEA programming is a standout offering: In partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet, guests can partake in nature-centric onboard activities and shore excursions. Most Princess ships boast a majestic atrium modeled after an Italian piazza, and it’s here where you’ll find some of the best drinking, dining, and shopping venues on board.

According to travel advisor and cruise specialist Jennaca Boose of Marvelous Mouse Travels , Princess’ fleet of 15 ships — 16 if you count the upcoming Sun Princess , which will make its long-anticipated debut this year — is family-friendly, and each vessel is “equipped to entertain all ages;” however, some cater towards specific age demographics better than others. For example, she says, travelers sailing with younger children will especially love Royal Princess and Regal Princess , which “have even more to offer” beyond the kids club, such as “outdoor play areas with jungle gyms and a separate teen space with a hot tub.” Meanwhile, says Boose, cruisers craving an intimate onboard experience may consider sailing aboard Coral Princess or Island Princess , which are two of the line’s smaller ships.

Finally, it’s also worth noting that the line offers dozens, if not hundreds, of itineraries across the globe, including Alaska, Mexico, Japan, the Mediterranean, and many more. “Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or an immersive cultural itinerary,” says Boose, “Princess has a ship for you.” Without further ado, keep scrolling for a breakdown of each ship in the Princess Cruises fleet to help you narrow down which vessels would be best for you.

Sun Princess

Inaugural Year: 2024

Ship Class: Sphere

Ship Capacity: 4,300 guests

The inaugural ship in Princess' new Sphere class, Sun Princess is the line's largest — and flashiest — vessel to date. Set to sail the Mediterranean and Caribbean, this 20-deck mega-ship is sure to make waves following its early 2024 debut. The Park19 family zone will offer nine fun-filled activities, including the Sea Breeze (the first Rollglider at sea), The Lookout (an open-air observation deck), and Coastal Climb (a climbing structure for adventure enthusiasts of all ages). There’s also a two-deck arena, the multi-level Dome entertainment space, and the brand-new Spellbound, a Victorian-themed bar where guests can watch magicians while sipping theatrical cocktails.

Discovery Princess

Inaugural Year: 2022

Ship Class: Royal

Ship Capacity: 3,660 guests

For an elegant onboard experience complete with world-class specialty dining that’ll entice any gourmand, spectacular live entertainment in the lavish Princess Theater, and the largest balconies at sea (spanning over 1,000 square feet) found in one of the ship’s splurge-worthy Sky Suites, look no further than Princess’ final Royal-class ship. Spend sea days soaking up the sun — and the ocean views — by the infinity Wake View Pool.

Enchanted Princess

Inaugural Year: 2021

The elegant Enchanted Princess is a haven for relaxation-seekers with four sparkling pools (including the infinity-edge Wake View Pool), 10 hot tubs, and a serene spa offering Asian-inspired treatments. For the ultimate splurge, reserve one of the sprawling Sky Suites, best known for their expansive balconies offering 270-degree sea views. Other honorable mentions include the Sanctuary, Discovery at SEA, movie screenings under the stars, and the SeaWalk, a 60-foot-long glass-enclosed hallway with floor-to-ceiling ocean vistas.

Sky Princess

Inaugural Year: 2019

The snazzy Sky Princess made its grand debut in 2019; fast-forward five years later, and the ship has retained its allure. The three-story atrium is the beating heart of the ship, dotted with shops, bars, and restaurants galore. Check out Chef’s Table Lumiere, or try your luck at the casino for the ultimate splurge. Finally, for the best ocean views, book one of the Sky Suites.

Majestic Princess

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Inaugural Year: 2017

Ship Capacity: 3,560 guests

This Royal-class ship was initially designed for cruises from Shanghai, which means passengers can expect Chinese-inspired decor along with the fantastic specialty restaurant, Harmony, which features mouthwatering Asian menu items like wok-fried lobster, spring rolls, and more. Also unique to Majestic Princess is the adults-only Hollywood Pool Club, a perfect spot for grown-ups looking to soak in style. Meanwhile, don’t miss the dazzling casino and incredible SeaWalk, where panoramic ocean views await.

Regal Princess

Inaugural Year: 2014

This 2014 mega-ship definitely delivers in terms of onboard attractions. A few fan favorites include movies under the stars (best enjoyed with popcorn and candy in hand, of course), original productions, an outdoor musical fountain show, and Princess Live!, where passengers will find interactive culinary shows along with late-night comedy and game shows that can be viewed in-person or from the comfort of one’s stateroom. Last but not least, don’t forget to snap a selfie on the SeaWalk.

Royal Princess

Inaugural Year: 2013

Prepare to receive the royal treatment (pun intended) aboard the 3,560-passenger Royal Princess . The ship’s dazzling common spaces, including the grand atrium and the SeaWalk, are sure to impress design lovers, while the drinking and dining options, including the extravagant Chef’s Table Lumiere — available only on Royal-class ships — will delight culinary connoisseurs of all ages.

Ruby Princess

Inaugural Year: 2008

Ship Class: Crown

Ship Capacity: 3,080 guests

Entertainment options abound on the 19-deck Ruby Princess , from movies under the stars and basketball to golfing and (hopefully) winning big at the casino. While party-going cruisers can dance ‘til the wee hours of the night at Skywalkers, serenity-seeking travelers may choose to hit the sack early before waking up to enjoy the spa or The Sanctuary.

Emerald Princess

Inaugural Year: 2007

Last refurbished in 2019, Emerald Princess features something for families of all ages, including  reimagined Camp Discovery youth and teen centers and the serene Sanctuary, a kid-free slice of paradise in the middle of the sea. Passengers can also perfect their swing at the putting course, enjoy poolside movie screenings, unwind at one of several swanky bars and lounges, including the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, hit the spa, or dance the night away at the onboard club. In summary, it’s pretty much impossible to be bored on this ship.

Crown Princess

Inaugural Year: 2006

Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity , Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub.

Diamond Princess

Inaugural Year: 2004

Ship Class: Grand

Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests

Best known for its Asia itineraries, Diamond Princess is sure to wow cruisers of all ages with its unique onboard features. Wellness-seekers need not miss the Izumi Japanese Bath, where guests can enjoy a traditional Japanese bathing experience coupled with breathtaking ocean views. There’s also the adults-only Sanctuary sun deck, Broadway-caliber entertainment, ample restaurants (including five main dining rooms), a nightclub, and so much more.

Caribbean Princess

Ship Capacity: 3,140 guests

This massive 18-deck ship was last refurbished in 2019 to bring it up to par with the line’s latest vessels. The European-inspired piazza , boasting street performers, eclectic boutiques, restaurants and bars, and a striking spiral staircase, is the beating heart of the ship. Plus, as part of the line’s partnership with Discovery, guests can enjoy nature-filled activities and lectures.

Sapphire Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests

Those craving a traditional cruising experience need not look further than the 20-year-old Sapphire Princess . With an onboard nightclub, five main dining rooms (plus many other bars and lounges, including a cigar lounge), this 2,670-passenger ship is among the line’s buzziest. After dancing the night away, adults can spend the day relaxing at The Sanctuary, while families will surely appreciate the dedicated spaces for kids, tweens, and teens.

Island Princess

Inaugural Year: 2003

Ship Class: Coral

Ship Capacity: 2,200 guests

Island Princess was purposefully built to sail through the Panama Canal. This 2,200-guest, 20-plus-year-old ship offers a more refined onboard experience compared to the line’s newer, flashier vessels. Sea days are well spent at the spa, in swimming pools, or sipping cocktails in the massive atriums; come nighttime, watch movies under the stars (a Princess staple) or catch live musical performances before hitting the sack — and getting ready to do it all again the following day.

Coral Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,000 guests

Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.

Grand Princess

Inaugural Year: 1998

Ship Capacity: 2,600 guests

Princess’ oldest ship underwent a major renovation back in 2019, adding fan-favorite restaurants like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, and Coffee & Cones. Catch a Broadway-style show, relax at The Sanctuary, or partake in nature-centric activities as part of the line’s Discovery at SEA programming.
