Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Trip’ on Netflix, a Bleak Comedy That Elevates Marital Discord to a Bloody New Level

'Constellation' Cast Gives An Exclusive Look Behind The Scenes At The Making of Apple TV+'s Space Thriller

Stream it or skip it: 'constellation' on apple tv+, where an astronaut finds pieces of her life missing upon returning to earth after a disaster, 'constellation' episode guide: how many episodes in noomi rapace and jonathan banks' apple tv+ space thriller, stream it or skip it: 'django' on netflix, about a man looking for his daughter in the wild west.

Netflix’s The Trip is — well, I was going to give the usual spiel about it being a Norwegian black comedy-slash-thriller starring Noomi Rapace ( The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo , Prometheus ) and directed by Tommy Wirkola of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters fame, but I’m just gonna cut to the chase and say it’s some sick shit. And as most sick shit goes, its smooth-as-guts-in-a-blender-set-on-puree mix of yucks and yuks is very much a take-it-or-leave-it affair.

THE TRIP : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: For some reason, The Trip doesn’t open with a crazy scene that’s on the precarious lip of a suspenseful cliff before flashing back to the beginning — it just opens at the beginning. How very novel! So, a husband and wife sit in bed arguing and the conversation gets pretty nutty and out there and, as we suspected, they’re just actors on the set of a soap opera. Lars (Aksel Hennie) is the director. He chitchats with a co-worker about how he and his wife are going up to the cabin this weekend and he stresses repeatedly how she wants to go on a long hike into the mountains, and isn’t that dangerous? On his way home, he stops to visit his dad at the nursing home so the old man can question his manhood. Then he goes to the hardware emporium for a hammer, a hacksaw, some rope and duct tape — you know, the Serial Killer Special, $49.95.

He picks up Lisa (Rapace), and the bickering starts immediately. Needling. Irritation. Teensy little digs. Death by 1,000 cuts on both sides. Their professional lives are lousy and the poison’s bled into their personal lives. They get to the cabin and as he unloads his collection of suspicious tools, the camera lingers on a cabinet full of shotguns, and as she mills about the kitchen, the camera gets a lensful of butcher and bread knives. Why? No reason. Just the usual stuff you’d find in a cabin in the Norwegian forest where you might go hunting and then need to cut up the animal you killed.

Lars and Lisa drive each other nuts cooking and eating dinner, and before bed they play a game of Scrabble that only further sledgehammers the wedge between them. The next day, we follow Lars as he fetches the hammer from the basement and heads to the kitchen for two belts of booze, and the camera angle for this shot is canted, oh so very canted. He sneaks up behind Lisa and before he can ballpeen a hole in her skull she quickly turns around and tases him. It’s probably safe to say that marital counseling would be pointless at this stage of their relationship.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The War of the Røsens ! (Yeah, I know, Røsen is Swedish, not Norwegian. Just give me this one!)

Performance Worth Watching: Rapace and Hennie are equally excellent at playing shitty people, pairing nicely like fava beans with a nice Chianti.

Memorable Dialogue: Lars gets in the nastiest dig ever (decontextualized to avoid a spoiler): “Maybe you’ll be satisfied now.”

Sex and Skin: None, but be warned, there are disturbing scenes of sexual assault.

Our Take: …Then again, Lars and Lisa do seem to finally be on the same page, homicidal though it may be, so loll that sweet and sticky caramel-flavored irony around in your mouth for a minute there. The revelation that they want to kill each other in the most literal fashion comes at the 21-minute mark of a 114-minute movie, so it’s not a spoiler to say things escalate from there, via a game of one-upspersonship that goes from cold to violent to utterly ruthless to extremely violent to repulsive to even more extremely violent to thoroughly complicated to flat-out gory as hell. And yes, other characters get involved, lest it get too repetitive. If you can hang with it through its demented twists and turns — no guarantees, love it or hate it, no deposit no return, mileage may vary, etc. — it’ll be to see what resolution Wirkola and co-screenwriters Nick Ball and John Niven came up with, and not because you root for any of these people, who are, at best, poor examples of the human species.

So I guess that means The Trip exists in the satire realm, where marital discord is depicted with immense exaggeration and grotesque homicidal impulses are rendered in rich, bloody reds. One wonders if Lars and Lisa find this elevation of confrontation therapeutic, going from passive-aggressive to insanely aggressive, dropping the sniper rifles for a knife fight, sometimes not at all in a metaphorical fashion. Wirkola occasionally crosses the line between bad taste (which is good; think John Waters) and tastelessness (which is bad; think R-rated Adam Sandler vehicles), spending the majority of the budget on burst blood vessels in eyes and viscous strings of various bodily fluids drooling from mouths and hamburgered knees and innards turned into out-ards — total gorebuckets, more splatter than two or three of those wussy middling slasher movies they make for eight-year-olds these days, he said, nudge wink grain of salt.

Anyway, the movie adheres to the cliche that all is fair in love and war. It’s amusing and irreverent, bleak and repulsive — and therefore an exercise in cognitive dissonance, I guess. It’s definitely conceived more in sickness than in health. For better or worse. ’Til death by disembowelment or shotgun do we part. I’m gonna stop there.

Our Call: STREAM IT. The Trip is far from great, and at its best, it’s barely good. But it inspires a few choking laughs, it’s challenging in its unpleasantness, and it’s likely to satisfy any iron stomachs who are up to the task.

The Field Trip

The field trip.

The most epic add-on experience in 17th Door history.

For the past four years, you have been the prime example of a perfect inmate. As a reward for your good behavior, the Warden has chosen you to attend a field trip, leaving behind the walls of the penitentiary for one special evening of rehabilitation. But, as you know by now at The 17th Door, you never know what will happen next. Welcome to The Field Trip.

This 50 minute off-site experience will transport you from the grim and gruesome prison to a pair of worlds that are both equally wacky and unique. From Rave Furries to Ratrod Clowns, you are in for a wild ride that includes chasing, hiding, drops, sparks, music, dancing, and a bunch of cool cars. Part drive through, part walk through, all fun, this intense experience is like nothing ever done before.

Once The Field Trip has concluded, all inmates will return back to the prison and will be ushered through a VIP entrance straight into The 17th Door maze experience to continue their sentence.

The Field Trip has extremely limited tickets available so you can either hear about how fun it was from someone else when it’s too late, or you can sign your permission slip and find out yourself! ***NOTE: ALL MEMBERS OF YOUR GROUP MUST PURCHASE ‘THE FIELD TRIP’ TICKETS IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO STAY TOGETHER DURING THE MAIN HAUNT EXPERIENCE.

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. We only use a weighted review system for properties in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains) – the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the review score calculation. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

  • Crazy credits The film's original theatrical prints begin with the following disclaimer, which appears as onscreen text that is read aloud by Bret Morrison : "THE TRIP - FORWARD. You are about to be involved in a most unusual motion picture experience. It deals fictionally with the hallucinogenic drug, LSD. Today, the extensive use in black market production of this and other such "mind-bending" chemicals is of great concern to medical and civil authorities. The illegal manufacture and distribution of these drugs is dangerous and can have fatal consequences. Many have been hospitalized as a result. This picture represents a shocking commentary on a prevalent trend of our time and one that must be of great concern to us all." Because this disclaimer was imposed by the studio and went against Roger Corman 's desire to have the film provide a balanced portrayal of drug use, it was removed from the 2011 director's cut.

The Trip – August 17, 2023

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32

Press to listen to the audio file in a new tab or window.

When writer Lindsey Lazarte was growing up, she took her father for granted. Because she did, she carried certain attitudes about her dad that were simply wrong. She failed to grasp the profound love he had for her. She resented certain decisions he made for the good of the family. There were even times, she said, when she went out of her way to stir up tensions between herself and him.

Then came the trip to the Philippines, her father’s home. Waiting for them there were her father’s many siblings and a large, extended family. And it was only then—in spending time with them, listening to their stories about her father, seeing him tear up time and again—only then did she begin to realize all he had personally given up in order to provide the chance for a better life for her. After that trip, Lindsey’s view of her father’s love changed forever.

When it comes to our relationship with our heavenly Father, there have been times when you and I have behaved like Lindsey. We have taken him for granted. We have resented what he has allowed—or not allowed—to happen in our lives. The impulses of our old sinful selves have even driven us to distance ourselves from him, to rebel against his will for our lives. For what, to make some statement about our independence? To declare that “no one is the boss of me”? For such moments of betrayal, you and I deserve his abandonment.

But our heavenly Father has not abandoned us. Instead, he calls us to repentance. And to remind us how much he loves us, he invites us on a trip as well—a trip to the cross. For it is there, at the cross, you and I see what God was willing to do to wash us clean and make us his own. There, at the cross, God gave up his own Son to wash our sins away. There, at the cross, the extent of our Father’s love becomes clear once again.

Prayer: Lord, when the distractions come, take me once again to the foot of the cross. Amen.

Road Trip along US 17, the Old Coastal Highway

Fans of retro Americana and roadside kitsch will find a treasure trove of down-home sites along the old Coastal Highway, now known as U.S. 17. Before the arrival of the interstate highway system, U.S. 17 was by far the most-traveled route in the region. While now just a shadow of its former self, it is still a vital roadway and contains a lot of interesting, little-known history. Here’s a look at some of the highlights, beginning just north of Charleston and ending at Brunswick, Georgia.

The Arthur J Ravenell Bridge on US Highway 17

  • Sweetgrass Baskets : A stretch of U.S. 17 in Mt. Pleasant north of Charleston has been dubbed the “Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway” in honor of the many wooden stalls along its length hosting local African American artisans selling their homemade sweetgrass baskets, a centuries-old tradition with African roots.
  • Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge : The longest cable-stayed bridge in the western hemisphere joins Mt. Pleasant with Charleston proper. It has a pedestrian and bike lane too.
  • Coburg Cow : This nearly century-old dairy advertisement—a slowly rotating milk cow—was once near pastureland outside city limits. Find it in West Ashley on the portion of U.S. 17 known as the “Savannah Highway,” just west of Charleston.
  • Old Sheldon Church : A very short drive off U.S. 17, the ruins of the Old Sheldon Church—burned by both the British during the Revolution and the Yankees during the Civil War—are huge, stark, and poignant. Going south on U.S. 17, take a right onto Old Sheldon Church Road.
  • Firework Stands : At the intersection of U.S. 17 and I-95 at Hardeeville you’ll find many garish, colorful stores selling enough fireworks to blow you to the moon and back.
  • Keller’s Flea Market : South of Savannah on U.S. 17, at the intersection with Highway 204 (Abercorn Extension), find this classic rambling and friendly Southern flea market. Look for the statue of the hat-wearing cow out front.
  • Midway Church : In the Liberty County town of Midway is this beautiful 1792 church, whose congregation once boasted two of Georgia’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. Don’t miss the historic cemetery across the street.
  • Smallest Church in North America : On the side of the road near South Newport find the miniscule and charming Memory Park Christ Chapel, erected in 1950.
  • Butler Island Plantation Ruins : Just south of Darien, Georgia, on the west side of U.S. 17, find this tall chimney—the only surviving remnant of the Butler plantation. English actress Fanny Kemble, who married a Butler heir, wrote the first influential abolitionist work Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation after witnessing the miserable life of the slaves who worked here. (Strangely, the nearby historical marker makes no mention of this.
  • Brunswick Stewpot : Allegedly the container in which the first batch of Brunswick Stew was cooked up, you can find this cast iron pot in Brunswick, Georgia, at the corner of U.S. 17 and the Torras Causeway to St. Simons Island.

Hooked on History: Three Strasburg men find adventure on canoe trip to New Orleans in 1964

In the summer of 1964, three young men from Strasburg went on the adventure of a lifetime, taking a 2,000-mile canoe trip from Dover to New Orleans.

Along the way, they sparked an intensive search in Missouri when authorities thought they had drowned in the Mississippi River; were treated royally by tugboat captains; and got a frosty reception in one Southern town when residents thought they were civil rights workers.

The three ‒ Terry Spidell and Bill Malcuit, then age 17; and Jim Ecenbarger, then age 20 ‒ left Dover on June 14, 1964.

"Bill Malcuit and I hung out together," said Spidell, who still lives in Strasburg. "We were talking about things to do during the summer between our junior and senior year in school. We really didn't come up with anything. His dad (contractor William 'Red' Malcuit) was the one that came up going to New Orleans with the canoe."

The elder Malcuit outfitted them with a 20-foot aluminum canoe that weighed 117 pounds and would float in 4 inches of water.

Mishap on the Muskingum

They canoed down the Tuscarawas River to Coshocton, where they purchased a 6 horsepower motor that had a 360 swivel on it. It fit right on the side of the canoe. "We got to Coshocton and realized after the blisters on our hands, we weren't going to make it 2,000 miles," Spidell said.

From there, they traveled down the Muskingum River to Marietta. They portaged around most the dams on the river, but at one, they decided to go over the dam, recalled Ecenbarger, who now lives at Atwood Lake. The canoe crashed on the lip of the dam, buckling the watercraft.

"We had to pound out the sides of the canoe to keep going. We took stones and pounded it straight again and then took off," he said.

At Marietta, they entered the Ohio River, traveling down until it joined the Mississippi. They reached the Mississippi on July 4.

Authorities fear they had drowned

The trio created quite a stir during a stop outside Caruthersville, in what is known as the bootheel of southern Missouri.

It was rough and windy on the Mississippi, so the three young men decided to stay there all day, Spidell recalled. They unloaded the canoe, leaving their equipment on the riverbank, and headed back to Caruthersville to watch a movie, taking the canoe with them. Then they stayed all night at a motel in town. When they came back in the morning, all of their stuff was gone, including a .22 caliber pistol and sawed-off shotgun Ecenbarger had brought along.

"A guy had a fish line down through that area, and he found our stuff on the bank. He picked it up and took it to the police station," Spidell said.

The Pemiscot County sheriff and the Coast Guard launched a search for the three, fearing that they had drowned. They also notified the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office on July 6. Later, the owner of the motel told authorities of their whereabouts after hearing about the searching.

The three continued their journey down the Mississippi, unaware of what was going on. "When we got to the next town, Malcuit was supposed to call his mom every so often. So, he called her, and she was in tears because the Missouri sheriff said we had drowned," Ecenbarger said.

He never got his weapons back.

Because the canoe was so small, they weren't allowed to travel through locks on the river by themselves. They had to wait for larger boats to show up. The tugboat captains would welcome them aboard and feed them.

They had some unusual occurrences along the way. "One night, we were camped in this field," Ecenbarger said. "It was pretty dark out. We slept close together. Malcuit reached over and tapped me, and said, 'There's something breathing on my face.' I got out the flashlight, and here it was a big old Brahma bull standing over top of him. We got out of that field and camped in another spot."

Stop in a Southern town

They stopped in one Southern community where they did not receive a warm welcome initially.

"We stopped in this town, and walked up into the town and went to a restaurant to eatWe went in and sat down," Ecenbarger recalled. "We sat there and sat there, never got waited on. People would come in. They would wait on them. They would eat and leave. We got up and left.

"Then there was an Army surplus store. We went into it. We walked around and looked at stuff. We saw that the guy who owned the place kept following us. So, when we went to leave, we decided we'd ask him what the problem was. He said, we don't like civil rights people. We didn't dress up. We had raggedy shorts on. After they found out what we were really doing, they were real happy."

Shortly before this incident, three civil rights workers had been tortured and murdered in Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan on June 21, 1964.

Arrival in New Orleans

Eventually, the three travelers arrived safely in New Orleans after a 31-day journey.

While they were making the trip, Malcuit's father, Red Malcuit, asked Chuck and Shirley Garber of Strasburg to drive to Louisiana to pick them up. The Garbers left their four children with Chuck's mother and headed south in their station wagon on July 16.

When the Garbers got to New Orleans, they went to the police station to ask about the trio. The police had no information on them. They then checked with the Coast Guard and found out the three had gone to a motel.

"So I go up to the front desk," Chuck Garber recalled. "I saw these two guys sitting on the floor, and I didn't think anything of it. I went over and I asked if they had Billy Malcuit, Terry Spidell and Jim Ecenbarger. And Billy said, 'Hey Chuck, who are you looking for?' I looked around, and it was Billy. He was sunburned, really bad. His hair was a different color because of being out in the sun all the time, and he had a beard. I didn't know him."

Traveling back to Ohio with a monkey

The drive back home also was an adventure, because the young men decided to buy a monkey while they were in New Orleans. They paid $19 for it. "He was wild. He'd bite the heck out of you," Spidell said. The monkey would get on the steering wheel of the car and look out the window while they were driving.

"They left it loose in the car and it would crawl over my shoulders, and I would sit there with goose pimples. Get the monkey away from me," Shirley Garber recalled.

The group decided to stop at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky for a tour. They cracked the windows on the car for the monkey, but they neglected to remove its collar and leash. When they got back, they found that the monkey's leash got tangled up under the steering wheel and the monkey hung itself. They buried the animal somewhere in Kentucky.

A hero's welcome

When the trio got back to Tuscarawas County on July 21, they received a hero's welcome. They were met at Harry Clever Field in New Philadelphia and joined a caravan headed back to Strasburg. The caravan was made up of Strasburg's fire engine, sheriff's cruisers and around 50 cars.

At the Strasburg fire station ‒ which was decorated with a 50-foot sign prepared by several young people in the community ‒ they received the key to the village from Mayor John Studer and an achievement plaque from William Dreher, president of the booster club.

Spidell said he no longer has the key to the village, and the canoe was stolen after their return.

Bill Malcuit died Dec. 28, 2019, at age 72.

"Looking back at that time, it didn't seem that daring," Spidell said. "But looking at it now, I'd never let my kid do that. It was Red Malcuit's idea, and I'm so glad we did it. I learned a lot."

Science Hill High School Marching Band prepares for Ireland

J OHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Science Hill High School Marching Band prepared for its trip to Ireland by marching and playing parade tunes around the school on Friday.

The Hilltopper Band will embark to Ireland on Sunday. They will be performing in Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17.

The SHHS Band traditionally takes a trip every two years. They’ve gone to Orlando, Chicago, New York and many more places. However, this will be their first international trip.

“There’s an actual application process that we went through where we had to submit videos and recommendations and we were fortunate enough to be picked probably between 45 to 50 applicants from all over the world,” Band Director Carson Vermillion said.

The Hilltopper Band will be performing two parade tunes. A traditional Irish song “The Rakes of Mallow” and the Neil Diamond classic “Sweet Caroline.”

The band members will also get to explore the country of Ireland while on the trip.

“We’re spending two days in Galway,” Vermillion said. “And so we’re seeing some sights and sounds over there. And then we’re moving to the eastern part of the country to Dublin and seeing lots of the things a part of their culture, and the St Patrick’s Cathedral. We’re going to a farm where the kids learn how to make Irish bread and learn Irish dancing.”

Vermillion said he believes it’s a great opportunity for his students to experience other cultures and different parts of the world. Students said they agree.

“I’m really excited to see all the castles, the really old architecture and the beautiful cliffs on the coast,” Drum Major Ethan Rich said. “It’s a lot of beautiful scenery.”

Many of the band members are glad their hard work during marching season paid off.

“It’s really refreshing because it’s less pressure than during marching season, when we all wanted to win and we did really well,” Lily Rochelle, another SHHS Band Drum Major, said. “And it’s kind of like a reward for all of our hard work we put into the marching season.”

Rochelle said many of them are excited to experience an international trip with their friends they’ve known for years.

“I’m very thankful because the people in band are my best friends, and getting to go on a trip so far away with them is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Rochelle said. “And I’m never going to forget the memories we make there.”

SHHS Band Drum Major Eden Prather said she almost didn’t get to have a senior trip, and now she gets this opportunity.

“I just want to thank my fellow band members and thank my band directors for giving us this opportunity to go, because even my mom, she was in band too, and she never got to do anything like this,” Prather said. “I’d like to say thank you and I’m just really excited and really appreciative.”

Vermillion said for many students, this will be their first time on an airplane, and for most of them their first time out of the country.

“And so just being able to represent our state and our country in this great event is just a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Vermillion said.

The Hilltopper Band will depart on March 10 and will be back on March 18.

Kirk Cousins is leaving Minnesota for Atlanta , landing another big contract with a well-timed foray into free agency .

Cousins agreed Monday to a four-year, $180 million deal with $100 million guaranteed with the Falcons, according to a person with knowledge of the terms, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the deal can’t be signed until Wednesday when the new league year begins.

Cousins gets a $50 million signing bonus and his salaries for 2024 and 2025 are fully guaranteed, the person said. The annual average value of $45 million would reach the top 10 for quarterbacks in the NFL .

Atlanta had a glaring need at quarterback after cycling through Desmond Ridder and Tyler Heinicke last season, and Cousins’ wife, Julie, grew up in Alpharetta, a suburb of Atlanta. The fit was obvious, even if that meant the 35-year-old had to leave a comfortable situation in Minnesota.

And guess what? The Falcons are scheduled to play a road game against the Vikings in the 2024 season.

“After significant and positive dialogue with Kirk and his representatives, we were unable to reach agreement on a contract that fits the short and long-term visions for both Kirk and the Minnesota Vikings,” general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said in a statement distributed by the team. “Kirk holds a special place in Vikings history, and we appreciate his leadership and contributions to the team and the Minneapolis-St. Paul community over the past six seasons. We wish him, his wife, Julie, and their children all the best.”

(AP Photo/Reed Hoffmann, File)

After moving on from their franchise player Matt Ryan in 2022, the Falcons drafted Ridder in the third round after signing Marcus Mariota. Neither move panned out, and the Falcons have failed to win more than seven games for six straight seasons.

The NFC South is wide open, though, and Cousins in Atlanta will have some promising young talent around him with running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts, their first-round draft picks from each of the past three years.

New coach Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson both came from the Los Angeles Rams just as Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell did, so the offense Cousins will run with the Falcons will be familiar.

Working his way back from a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot that sidelined him because of an injury for the first time in his career, Cousins had a 103.8 passer rating in eight games for the Vikings last season that was still the third best in the league despite the lost time.

The epitome of a late bloomer, Cousins enjoyed largely the most effective performances of his career since the Vikings hired O’Connell in 2022.

They were going to need a succession plan regardless of how this negotiation played out, though, considering Cousins’ age and their commitment to a “competitive rebuild,” as Adofo-Mensah has termed it several times — and as his statement Monday reiterated.

“Our approach heading into free agency always included layers of contingencies regarding the quarterback position,” Adofo-Mensah said. “We are moving forward with plans that allow us to continue building a roster that can compete for a championship.”

Joshua Dobbs, Jaren Hall and Nick Mullens all took turns subbing for Cousins down the stretch, with mixed success at best as the Vikings stumbled to a 7-10 finish.

The Vikings were serious in their desire to continue with Cousins , but given their cap situation and the recent improvement and outlook around them by their NFC North foes they had to have a limit about how much — and for how long — they could guarantee. With the 11th pick in the draft next month, they’ll likely be too low to get one of the top quarterback prospects, but it’s a deep class and they’re almost certain to take one on the first or second day.

Cousins, for as much as he wanted to finish his career with Minnesota, he also made clear he wanted to be valued with a commitment beyond a token year.

“It’s not about the dollars, but what the dollars represent,” was how Cousins put it in an interview with reporters on Jan. 8.

Cousins has not only been the consummate overachiever on the field, from afterthought college recruit to fourth-round draft pick to currently 24th place on the NFL’s all-time list in career passing yards (39,471), but he has mastered the business side of the game with the guidance of his agent Mike McCartney.

After playing on consecutive franchise tags for Washington in 2016 and 2017, Cousins cashed in as the rare starting quarterback to hit free agency in 2018 when the Vikings had salary cap space and a pressing need at the position after an NFC championship game appearance. He got the first fully guaranteed, multi-year contract in league history for a quarterback when he signed for $84 million.

Just over the past eight seasons, Cousins has earned more than $228 million. He has won only one playoff game, after the 2019 season.

The Vikings restructured Cousins’ deal a year ago without giving him any new money, adding four voidable years to flatten his salary cap hit. That move will stick with the Vikings with a $28.5 million salary cap hit in 2024, for the remaining signing bonus proration from his last extension in 2022.
