Travel MLMs: What You Need to Know

We’re about to get a little bit controversial here and chat up on travel Multi Leveling Marketing (MLM) travel businesses and how they differ from a host agency . Our goal is to make sure that people who want to become travel agents don’t end up hoodwinked by promises of a travel MLM. We want to help agents differentiate between full-service travel companies like host agencies (which support agents to sell travel) and travel MLMs (which tend to emphasize selling memberships).

Every so often an aspiring travel agent stumbles into a travel MLM thinking it functions like a host agency. But that’s just not the case.

Before I launch in, I want to say that this truly is not a “host vs. MLM face-off” or anything of the like. No way. We’re all about peace, puppies, yummy green matcha drinks, and trumpets over in our neck of the woods. If you want to go with a travel MLM and you know what you're getting into, go for it.

Rather, our goal is to educate folks to ensure they fully understand the business model they’re entering into. Every so often an aspiring travel agent stumbles into a travel MLM thinking it functions like a host agency. But that’s just not the case. Host agencies and MLMs are two different types of businesses. I'd say they're like apples and oranges, but it's really more like apples and elephants.

This article discusses those differences. We at HAR want to make sure you’re finding the support that is the right fit for you and your travel agency.

HAR Shares Their Feelings On Travel MLMs

Let me cut to the chase: If you're a travel agent or an aspiring travel agent who wants to earn money planning trips and selling travel, we here at HAR do NOT think a travel MLM is a good option for you. No sirree. Not by a long shot.

The HAR crew has mind-melded on the travel MLM issue. Originally, when this article was first published, we didn't even list MLMs on the site. Since then, we decided it's important to list them because our whole purpose is for travel agents to make informed choices. So here's the drill: if you see an MLM or an MLM hybrid (more on hybrids soon), you'll notice an alert on their profile. Like so:

Why do we advise such caution? It's our opinion that MLM travel business models use deceptive advertising, prey on people who are at an economic disadvantage and do not provide adequate support to serious travel agents.

At the end of the day, our site caters to readers who want to focus on selling travel, not subscriptions. What do I mean by that? Well let me back up and explain.  

What Is An MLM?

It's very rare that a travel MLM will come out and say, "Hey! We're a travel MLM!" However, there's often some coded language and jargon used that will alert your spidey senses: MLM marketing is also called “network marketing” and “direct sales,” so if you see a website throwing around that terminology, they’re probably talking about an MLM business model.

An MLM expert, Robert FitzPatrick, published a study that covered 10 publicly traded MLMs at its time—including the now-defunct travel MLM, Your Travel Business (YTB). What did he find? In short this: ". . . 99% of all [MLM] participants received less than $10 a week in commissions, before all expenses ." 1

With the exception of YTB, the study takes a broader look at MLMs . . . not just travel MLMs. How do travel MLMs compare? One thing travel MLMs have in common with other conventional MLMs is the high rate of failure. Lets dig in.

What Is A Travel MLM, Specifically?

Many travel MLMs are not required to publicize their income disclosure statement (they're not publicly traded). Those that do share their disclosures (in the name of transparency) present a pretty grim picture when it comes to income potential. 

For example, travel MLM Dream Trips (formerly WorldVentures) reported in 2019 ( the most recent disclosures available from July 2018 to June 2019) that 14.6% of all Representatives earned a commission or a bonus. 85.4% earned nothing or operated at a loss. The average commission/bonus earnings of all reps were $354.31, including the ones who made $0. If you take out the group who made nothing (or operated at a loss), you get an average of $2,425.55 and a median of $50.00. But the annual cost to join Dream Trips is a minimum of $769.89 in its first year ( source for annual fees ). (It may not come as a surprise to our perceptive readers that WorldVentures has declared bankruptcy, attempted an acquisition, and rebranded as Dream Trips, all since 2019.)

MLM's also use their own jargon for their travel agent members. If you're with a host agency, it's 99% likely that they'll refer to you as an "independent contractor," or travel business. They actually use this wording to make their offer more attractive. Be your own boss! Work independently! A travel MLM will more likely refer to its participants with terms like: representatives (PlanNet Marketing), builders (Surge365), referring travel agent (YTB) . . . you get the gist.

In travel MLMs, the dominant revenue stream is from selling memberships to recruits, not commissions from selling travel.

Travel MLMs get real shady when they make more money by recruiting other sales reps into the organization than they do actually selling a product (in this case, travel). This is entering serious pyramid scheme territory. And that’s a major DANGER ZONE folks.

Like any other MLM, travel MLMs have two revenue streams for its members:

• Commissions from selling a product (in this case, travel) directly to clients.
• Commissions, overrides, or kickbacks on membership sales from recruiting others into the organization.

The recruits are considered the "downline," and travel MLMs will try to entice you with promises that residual (or passive) income will trickle down from the upper echelon of the downline. (*cough* pyramid scheme.) 

You know how in most sales situations, you make the bulk of the commission on the product? Well, with MLMs, the people above you are the ones raking in the dough. (*cough* pyramid scheme).

What makes a travel MLM different from other MLMs (like Amway, LuLaRoe, Herbalife, etc.) is that reps don’t have to buy any product to sell like leggings, makeup or vitamins. ( However, oddly enough, some travel MLMs do also try to push selling vitamins and energy boosters!) In some ways, not having to buy products makes a travel MLM less risky in terms of financial investment (but not without risk).

What travel MLMs do have in common with other conventional MLMs is the high rate of failure.

Yikes. Oh, but there's more. Soooooo much more.

The infographic below magnifies average travel MLM earnings from income disclosure statements. The data based on three travel MLMs that publicized income disclosures. (Unsurprisingly, many travel MLMs do not provide public income disclosure statements.)

As you can see from the infographic, WorldVentures dismal income potential is not the exception, it's the norm. But despite the grim earnings outlook, the disclosures mask comprehensive data that points to even more dismal income potential.

The MLM Hybrid/ MLM-Affiliated Model

[Editor’s note: This section was added Oct. 12, 2018 and updated Oct. 27th, 2023.]

Almost daily people have been writing in asking me about InteleTravel host agency. I’ll admit, I didn’t want to go too deep into InteleTravel when I first wrote this because I knew I’d already be kicking a hornet’s nest. But here I go now, about to take a swing at it.

While InteleTravel is not an MLM, anyone who wants to sign up with them must go through their MLM marketing arm, PlanNet Marketing

While InteleTravel is not an MLM, anyone who wants to sign up with them must go through their MLM marketing arm, PlanNet Marketing, in order to sign on. And this is where it gets a little sticky.

Typical of an MLM, earnings from PlanNet Marketing do not compensate for the level of investment required. You can see the income disclosure in the infographic, but here’s the cliff notes: 76.92% of PlanNet Marketing reps (who may or may not be InteleTravel agents) earned zero—no commissions or overrides. In 2019, the annual average income for a PlanNet Marketing independent representative on the "Rep" level (the entry point) was $140.57. 2 .

When I reached out to InteleTravel's customer service about trying to sign on without going through PlanNet Marketing, here's what they had to say:

Thank you for your interest in InteleTravel.com. Currently, registration to become an Independent InteleTravel Agent is closed. After 25 years in business we are pleased to have reached our optimum size as a travel sales network and are not accepting any more applications. InteleTravel has always been proud of our Agent training & Customer Service standards, so to maintain the highest level of service we are closing our new Agent registration until further notice.

We recommend keeping in touch with the person that told you about our program so you can be notified when it becomes available.

This however is misleading, because people are still able to sign up through PlanNet marketing. PlanNet Marketing is not only the gateway to becoming an agent with InteleTravel. It remains the only way to get signed up with InteleTravel. This is a huge red flag.

If one wants to steer clear of the the MLM and sign up for InteleTravel only, they may be pressured (depending on the rep they purchased their agency through) to also sell ITAs (InteleTravel travel agencies) through PlanNet Marketing. A PlanNet Marketing rep will send you their personal page to sign up.

The small print (on the image below) also indicates you can only enroll through the PlanNet Marketing rep account first if you're interested in joining InteleTravel.

Several InteleTravel agents I spoke with (who I will not name for privacy purposes) have reported that an InteleTravel agent is not required to sign up for PlanNet Marketing to sell ITAs . The important thing to know is that when you sign up for InteleTravel, you'll be a part of someone's downline whether you personally participate in the MLM side of things or not. When host agencies rely on these MLM marketing arms, we call them "MLM hybrids."

Though InteleTravel is not technically an MLM,  for us there are red flags with InteleTravel due to their reliance on PlanNet Marketing's MLM branch.  

This might be more information than you ever wanted to know. However, InteleTravel is one of a handful of host agencies that partner with MLM marketing branches in the same way and we want you to be informed! (Archer Travel, who affiliates through Evolution's MLM marketing branch is another.)

A Note on Travel MLM Income Disclosures

What can you find out from an income disclosure? If a travel MLM provides an income disclosure, you can typically find out:

• The average earnings for active reps at different tiers (*cough* steps on the pyramid).
• The period in which income was earned.
• The percentage who earned some and/or no income during that period.
• Average estimated hours worked

These income disclosures are in stark opposition to the implications of all the residual income and free trips these travel MLMs focus on for their marketing.

But there's a lot that an income disclosure doesn't tell you. The FTC published a pdf chapter from Jon M. Taylor, PhD 2011 book, "The Case For (and Against) Multi-Level Marketing." Here, Dr. Taylor cautions those interested in MLMs to ask about attrition (dropout) rates. Here's what he says:

" Prospects should ask their recruiter to furnish the company’s attrition (dropout) rate; i.e., the percentage of recruits who sign up only to drop out within a year — and over a five or ten-year period. If they can’t or won’t furnish it, you can assume that it exceeds the minimum of 50% per year . . . Over a five-year period, at least 95% typically have left the company; and usually after ten years, nearly all but those at or near the top of their respective pyramids will have dropped out." Source (pg. 6)

Herein lies the illusion of transparency when it comes to a travel MLM's income disclosure : As bad as the disclosures look already, it gets even worse. The info included does not (and is not required to) offer to a complete picture of earning potential of MLMs, which can further mask losses. 

Many income disclosures will not include information such as: 

• Churn Rate & Attrition:  How quickly reps turnover and leave the MLM. The data may only include the number of reps who are still signed on with them at the end of the disclosure period, and does not account for the number of reps who left within that time frame. 
• Total Number of Distributors at Different Levels of the Organization:  This masks the total number of reps and distributors in general, then further obscures the data by not revealing how many reps sell at what level. How does this affect things? It skews the average income of the typical rep since the income spread between the bottom and top of a pyramid scheme can be significant (hundreds of thousands or even a million).
• How Much Income is from Travel Commissions:  The data also does not disclose what percentage of the income earned is from actual travel commissions (vs. residual income from referrals).
• Definition of "Active" Distributor:  Is active defined as someone that has sales during that period? Or any distributor paying fees? We have no idea. 

And this is really just the tip of the iceberg. There's a ton of other juicy information that many MLMs (not just travel MLMs) conceal in these types of statements. 3

How Did Travel MLMs Start Getting a Bad Rap?

The shady reputation of MLMs certainly is not limited to the travel industry, but when it comes to travel MLMs in particular, it was the rise and fall of YTB (Your Travel Business) that really left a bad taste in the mouth of the travel industry.

Long story short: YTB was modeled after a typical pyramid scheme structure that preyed on hopes of those who were economically vulnerable with promises of get-rich-quick schemes that required little time and relatively low financial investment.

At the time they shut their doors, 85% of YTB’s revenue was from selling memberships and materials for marketing courses to new recruits rather than travel sales. This from a company that had claimed you were a travel agent!

And there’s more … guess how much the average YTB rep earned each year? The average annual commission paid to a YTB rep was $44.29. Sounds bad, right? Well it gets worse, because 81% of all YTB reps earned no money at all, and 4% of YTB reps (those at the top of the upline) received 96% of all commissions paid to the company.

And the travel MLMs' habit of primarily booking personal travel (rather than travel for consumers) is something vendors noticed. Vendors felt that non-professionals were exploiting travel agent benefits (such as FAM trips) for personal gain. So much so, that many travel vendors severed ties with YTB.

YTB was subject to lawsuits from CA, IL, as well as a class-action lawsuit and eventually went bankrupt. But the vestiges of YTB exist today in modern-day travel MLMs. The founder of YTB (J. Lloyd “Coach” Tomer) is now the Chief Visionary Officer for Surge365.

David E. Manning was president of now-defunct Travelworks International, Inc. and is currently the president of Paycation (which now shows up as TraVerus, over which he also presides) and he is also the chairman of XStream travel. All of these are travel MLMs.  4

MLMs will often run strong for a few years, but implode once they get too big to sustain themselves. The MLM will then close its doors and the founders will start a new one, or rebrand and operate under another name. 

Travel MLMs Today

Travel MLMs were something of an uncharted territory for me. So when I started by digging in to the Google-verse, I was surprised to find how little concrete information was provided about joining a travel MLM organization on their site.

Travel MLMs and MLM hybrids offered little to no concrete information about commissions, backend support, Seller of Travel  (which you need if you’re selling travel in certain states), E&O insurance —not even basic information about joining without signing onto their email listserv or participating in a sizzle call. Heck, many of these sites don't even include profiles of people who run the business. So if the only way to get support for your agency is to send an email to an address with no name or employee attached to it, I'd be wary. By and large, they offered a lot of promises without any information to back it up. 

My search for the travel MLM Paycation redirected me to the site TraVerus which included zero information listed above. Instead it has a video that promotes deeply discounted travel in pursuit of a lifestyle that allows for all the time and money you need to travel all you want. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t want that!? It also promises, “the richest compensation plan in the direct selling industry” without offering any data to back it up. Suspicious, if you ask me.

Travel MLMs have gotten smarter. No longer will they make promises of how much income you can earn in a month (because, according to the FTC, they need to be able to provide support of any income claims 5 ). Rather, they make appeals to lifestyle and promises of free or discounted travel. 

This "Your Travelution" promotional video clip outlines some of the misleading and manipulating marketing strategies travel MLMs will use to try and recruit members:

Halfway through the TraVerus video below, it attempts to sell you on a nutritional supplement (another MLM product), which reps, in turn, would sell to others—verging from its original appeal and trying to woo you with promises of feeling and looking great while you lounge on the beach. 

When I visited the Surge365 site, a travel MLM launched in 2015, you have to attend a “sizzle call” to get any concrete info on joining. When I checked out their Founder’s Circle, only 1 of the 22 founders mentioned any travel agency experience in their bio. The rest had either come from an undisclosed travel company (cough, cough, probably another MLM) or had a non-travel related background. Odd for a company that purports to sell travel.

Some travel MLMs such as WorldVentures (which filed for bankruptcy in Dec. 2020) do not allow their reps to book directly with vendors . Rather, vendors require that travel bookings are made through a designated MLM HQ, where the MLM permanent staff (not any of its members) make the actual booking for agents. This may sound nice but the downside is that you're not in control of your reservation. This is problematic if you sign on believing you’ll be able use vendors’ travel agent portals, call in direct to the travel agent support lines, and build a relationship with the sales reps.

Ultimately, I was just really confused. I was left with more questions than answers. Which I interpreted as “proceed with extreme caution.”

How Is a Travel MLM Different from a Host Agency?

We’re pretty host-happy on the site. If you want a refresher on what a host agency is, this article is a good start . From there, I promise you that Pandora’s box of host agency info will be opened. With that in mind, we know that the host agency model is not for everyone. But we do think a it’s a pretty dang good option for new agents to consider.

But how is a travel MLM different from a host? At its most basic, the major difference is what comprises their revenue stream. Host agencies don't earn money unless you sell travel (not so with a travel MLM, that makes more money from membership sales.) This means that hosts are motivated to support you to sell as much travel as possible.

In fact, if you want to become a travel agent with a focus on creating a client base, receiving a constant travel education, building relationships with suppliers, and providing great customer service over recruiting other sellers, I’d steer you (far) away from an MLM and direct you to a host agency.

A Travel Agent Chats On Why He Switched from an MLM to a Host Agency

I spoke with Chris Dowd, independent travel agent and owner of T.O.T.O Vacation , about his experience with

WorldVentures travel MLM and why he decided to go with a host agency in the end.

Chris was with WorldVentures for about a year, and mentioned he joined that MLM, “more for their personal travel program, rather than trying to sell travel.”

Ultimately, Chris was disappointed in the expense and difficulty of booking travel with WorldVentures and decided to switch to a host agency in order to focus on selling travel.

Chris offered some really insightful and balanced reasons why he made the change, and chatted on the pros and cons of the MLM model. Here’s what he had to say (verbatim) about his experience:

The WorldVenture Allure

“They promised travel discounts: they would build packages for places that were off-peak . . . The problem I had with them, they would put out their best stuff on a Tuesday for 30 or 40 days in advance. To try and go to someplace like Costa Rica in 45 days is nearly impossible. So unless you were retired and could drop everything and get out and do it, it was very difficult to take advantage of the discounts.” "

WorldVentures Focus on Membership Sales

“They did push selling memberships to others. It was more of a travel club. WorldVentures provided a lot of backend support for selling more of MLM stuff. So it was definitely focused on the MLM aspect. When you built your downline you got a piece of everything they brought in. You really got much more money just from the money people spent with the travel club. To be perfectly honest, I’m still friends with a couple of guys that have done very well with WorldVentures. They’re not making money selling travel, they’re making money on selling subscriptions. ”

Difficulties with Booking Through WorldVentures

“We booked an Alaskan Cruise through them and were really disappointed. It was very hard to make payments and hard to book it. You have to book through WorldVentures who would then contact the supplier . . . Because it was a cruise, you couldn’t book it through the [WorldVentures] website. There was a small commission of $50 and $60 between the both of us. I really had no control over anything. Now [with a host agency], I can go straight to the supplier and work all those details out. I have a lot more control over the end product and customer service product.”

How Going with a Host Helped Chris Focus on Selling Travel

“I love the training that I get with [my host agency]. They provide hours and hours of video training and online seminars. I have a personal mentor that I can call and ask questions to. They can push me in the right direction. I’ve contacted them on a couple of large speculative opportunities on how to book and how to market it. There’s there a kind of experience there that I can draw upon.

They really want me to succeed, not by getting more agents in but by selling travel. You know what. I really feel they feel their success is contingent on my success. It’s empowering to know that these people really want me to succeed. I’m paying about 20% of what I was paying through WorldVentures.”

Top 10 MLM Travel Companies

In today’s post, I am going to share the top 10 MLM Travel Companies , as I see it.

So many of us want to “live the dream.” Often, that dream entails traveling, but is there a way to travel and make money doing so?

According to many, there is! The way to do that they say is by becoming a member of a MLM Travel Company where you actually sell travel packages and recruit other members to do the same thing. In doing so, you can earn and win free travel and get paid at the same time.

I have decided to use various sources such as online and offline reviews to rate various MLM Travel Companies.

Keep in mind that I am not a member of any of these companies. The information you are receiving is unbiased and based simply on my opinion. I highly recommend that you research any company closely before deciding to join.

Now starting from #10, here are the top 10 MLM Travel Companies.

# 10: Coastal Travel Package

According to their website, this MLM Company is managed by a team of entrepreneurs. There are no names given, but I did do a WhoIs lookup and found the website created back in 2002. So this travel MLM company has been operating for quite some time.

What you do need to know is, “Coastal Vacations is NOT a seller of Travel and therefore is not licensed to sell travel. Coastal sells Travel and Travel Related Discount Packages that provide discounted access to many travel and travel related companies.”

I do see quite a few members offering the opportunity online.

# 9: Pro Travel Plus

Pro Travel Plus is actually quite new; started in 2015 the CEO is Seth Fraser who has been involved with several MLM Companies.

Pro Travel Plus is a lot like #10, they just offer discounted travel opportunities.  As a member you get perks like:

• Up to 45% savings on luxury vacations

I will say that the PTP website seems quite unprofessional and I am looking because I actually think the background picture is one I took last year at a beach here in Puerto Rico.

Essentially, Pro Travel Plus is similar to an affiliate program using a MLM business format.

# 8: GoodLife USA

Founded by Mark Seyforth and Edward Dovner, Goodlife USA is similar to the two previous MLM companies. It offers discounted services on travel vacations and lodging.

Both men have made their mark in MLM prior to starting this company. Seyforth partnered with Herbalife with a diet shake he developed and Dovner built a huge business with First Choice Armor & Equipment.

There are various membership opportunities and supposedly you can get huge savings. You can also make great compensation by signing up new members.

By eliminating all the middlemen from travel booking, we are able to offer Subscribers the absolute lowest possible price! Just launched in 2016, we will see if this travel MLM will be a stud or a dud. Unlike the prior ones, Travelution turns you into a travel agent. You make commissions off travel sales and also from recruiting new agents.

The company is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida and the founders are Dave Manning and Faraday Hosseinipour. Both have ample experience in MLM and travel.

The company is fairly new, but has grown rapidly in the past few months. They will definitely move their way up this list in the months to come.

Depending on your membership level, you receive cards and perks to help you save on various travel vacations. And you can make money by enticing others to join.

Yes, the travel industry is very lucrative. It’s a huge market and is very competitive, but there is also a lot of demand. If travel was my hot button (it’s not) I would have partnered up with one of these Travel MLM Companies.

Quite a good number to compare from. It is great having such to plan for a travel.

There are maybe 15-20 travel companies in the network marketing space that I know of. Competition is a good thing. Some are good, others are okay and a few are exceptional. I would tell anyone considering a MLM Travel Company to compare at least three different companies they like, do their due diligence and then partner up with the one that makes the most sense to them.

Travelution sounds like the right place to work, you can earn commissions and it seems the owners know exactly what they’re doing.

I’ve heard decent things about the company, but don’t know a lot about it. If you’re considering Travelution, I would encourage you to take a closer look and research the company. If you like what you see, pursue it. If not, check out some of the other travel companies on this list.

The travel industry did take a hit for a few months, but it looks like things are starting to pick up. I’ve flown a couple times since the pandemic hit and both of my flights were fairly full. That’s a good thing. I’m sure it will rebound by early 2021.

Everyone loves to travel. That right there is a good enough motivation in putting up a business in this field. Of course there is more to it like the technical aspect etc etc but at the end of the day if this is your passion go for it.. I think it will bounce back once the smoke clears from this crisis.

The great thing about these Travel MLM Companies is you aren’t a traditional travel agent. For the most part, the company handles those things for you. Your job is to find customers and other business builders and the company handles the details. I think it’s a win win situation.

In my own opinion, it’s best to join an industry when things are bad. That seems to be when the fortunes are made. It’s kind of like the stock market. Everyone wants in when it’s up and up. When it goes down, everyone does the exact opposite: they sell.

Yet, the investors who make the most money are the ones who buy during the bad times and sell during the good times.

Getting travel clients can be an uphill task. The travel agencies market is very competitive nowadays.

Yes, most of these Travel MLM Companies are headquartered in the USA, but many of them do business in a lot of different countries. I know that World Ventures does.

I don’t believe one niche is any easier than another in the MLM arena. I personally prefer consumable products, but everyone I know also travels, so the opportunity is there.

I think there is a general shortage of services based MLMs. It’s therefore encouraging to see that there are so many travel company MLMs.

There aren’t many big service based MLM Companies. Of the top 20 MLM Companies, maybe 2-3 of them, if that, are service based. Services are always changed. Technology changes. But consumable products are always needed, used up, and reordered. Skin care, weight loss, beauty, and health products seem to dominate the market.

I am not a big fan of Travel company MLMs. I much prefer Fast Moving Consumer Goods.

What I suggest you do is get out a blank sheet of paper and then start comparing two or three of these MLM Travel Companies. Find out about the sign up cost, monthly cost, what’s included, etc. This will help you determine which company is the best option for you.

Almost everyone loves to travel. The idea of having a travel business sounds appealing to me. I’m not sure if being a travel agent is a better deal than promoting a MLM Travel Company, but it could be. I do like the idea of having leverage, and getting paid off your group’s sales, not just your own personal sales. For the right person, any of these MLM Travel Companies could be a great fit.

I agree with you. I’ve found that most people love to travel, and want to travel the world, but can’t afford to. If they can join a business that gives them discounted travel AND allows them to earn extra money at the same time, I think of that as a win-win.

Not only are their travel MLM Companies, but there are even MLM Companies that specialize in cruises. If this niche is something that interests you, I would consider comparing a few different MLM Travel Companies, so you can find one that is a good fit for you.

I haven’t personally looked into travel companies myself but have two friends that were in different companies. Both seemed to enjoy it and were making the money to pay their bills. One was in it for the ability to work from home and make the money she needed while the other did it for the travel experience and discount. Both have said they would still be with the business today if it wasn’t for circumstances that have made them leave. One was medical condition while the other was personal.

I plan to follow up with both of them and share their companies as well as their experiences with their permission.

We’re about to discuss travel Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) businesses and how they differ from host agencies. Our goal is to ensure that aspiring travel agents are well-informed about the potential pitfalls of joining a travel MLM. We want to help agents understand the differences between full-service travel companies like host agencies (like us!), which support agents in selling travel, and travel MLMs, which tend to focus on selling memberships.

Be smart, travel mlms can be sneaky.

Sometimes, aspiring travel agents mistakenly believe that a travel MLM functions like a host agency. However, that's simply not the case. Host agencies and MLMs are two distinct types of businesses. One provides infrastructure for you to sell trips and earn commissions while the other tries to rope you, and those who trust you, into a failing business model where travel is sort of an afterthought. Too harsh? Well, I really dislike shady travel MLMs. A host agency is far superior to a travel MLM, and whether you choose to apply for our host, or another host agency, I can sleep well knowing that you didn't sign up for an MLM.

MLM travel business models use misleading advertising, prey on people who are economically disadvantaged, and do not provide practical support to serious travel agents.

It's rare for a travel MLM to explicitly state, "Hey! We're a travel MLM!" However, they often use coded language and jargon that should raise your suspicions. MLM marketing is also referred to as "network marketing" and "direct sales." So, if you come across a website using such terminology, they're probably talking about an MLM business model.

Agents in Travel MLMs Don't Make Much Money

An MLM expert, Robert FitzPatrick, conducted a study that covered 10 publicly traded MLMs, including the now-defunct travel MLM, Your Travel Business (YTB). The study found that 99% of MLM participants received less a staggeringly low amount of less than $10 a week in commissions, before deducting expenses.

Travel MLMs, like other conventional MLMs, have a high rate of failure. Let's delve deeper into the specifics.

Many travel MLMs are not required to disclose their income statements since they are not publicly traded. However, those that do share their disclosures present a grim picture of income potential.

Travel MLM WorldVentures reported revealed that 85.4% of its representatives earned absolutely nothing or, even worse, operated at a loss. The average yearly earnings of a WorldVentures rep were reported at $354.31, while the annual cost to join WorldVentures in the first year is a minimum of $769.89.

Travel MLMs have their own jargon for their travel agent members. If you're with a host agency, you'll likely be referred to as an "independent contractor" or a travel business. In contrast, a travel MLM will use terms like representatives (PlanNet Marketing), builders (Surge365), or referring travel agent (YTB).

In travel MLMs, the primary revenue stream comes from selling memberships to recruits, rather than commissions from selling travel. This is where travel MLMs become shady, as they make more money from recruiting sales reps than from selling travel itself. This resembles a pyramid scheme, which is a major red flag.

Travel MLMs, similar to other MLMs, have two revenue streams for their members:

Commissions from selling travel (minimal)

Commissions, kickbacks or other financial incentives on selling memberships by recruiting others into the organization (the real money maker)

The dominant revenue stream in travel MLMs is from selling memberships, not travel. To be clear, you will be recruiting people in your network to join a shady MLM and not benefiting from the far more lucrative and ethical business of selling travel.

For travel MLMs, recruits are considered the "downline," and travel MLMs entice them with promises of residual or passive income trickling down from the upper levels of the downline. This resembles, or to be more clear, is a pyramid scheme, where those at the top benefit the most.

The shady reputation of MLMs extends beyond the travel industry, but it was the rise and fall of Your Travel Business (YTB) that left a particularly sour taste in the travel industry's mouth.

In short, YTB operated as a typical pyramid scheme, preying on economically vulnerable individuals with promises of get-rich-quick schemes that required minimal time and financial investment.

At the time of its closure, 85% of YTB's revenue came from selling memberships and marketing materials to new recruits, rather than from travel sales. Shockingly, the average annual commission paid to a YTB rep was $44.29. Furthermore, 81% of all YTB reps earned no money at all, while 4% of reps at the top of the upline, no surprise here, received 96% of all commissions.

YTB faced lawsuits in California and Illinois, as well as a class-action lawsuit that ultimately left them bankrupt. However, remnants of YTB can still be found in today's travel MLMs landscape. YTB's founder, J. Lloyd "Coach" Tomer, now serves as the Chief Visionary Officer for Surge365.

Travel MLMs Have Minimal Information on Their Websites

One thing you might find, should you decide to go down the travel MLM rabbit hole, is that they lack concrete information on their websites. They offer little to no details about commissions, backend support, Seller of Travel requirements, E&O insurance, or even basic information about joining without signing up for email listservs or participating in sizzle calls. Some of these websites don't even include profiles of the people running the business. If the only way to get support from your agency is by emailing an address with no name or employee attached to it, it's a major red flag. Overall, they make a lot of promises without providing any substantial information.

Travel MLMs have become smarter in their marketing tactics. Instead of making income claims, which the FTC requires them to substantiate, they now appeal to lifestyle and offer promises of free or discounted travel.

If you're still considering joining an MLM, the FTC has a resource page with questions to ask your sponsor before making a decision. You should read that, and really reconsider life choices. I know I am harsh, but seriously. Don't join a travel MLM. It will not be worth it and you will break trust with the people you recruit.

Travel MLMs vs. Legitimate Host Agencies

So, how does a travel MLM differ from a host agency? The major difference lies in their revenue streams. Host agencies earn money when you sell travel, while travel MLMs make more money from membership sales. This means that host agencies are motivated to support you in selling as much travel as possible.

Now that being said, many host agencies do charge a fee to be a part of their agency. There are admittedly pros and cons to this fee. The fee usually covers errors and ommissions insurance as well as licensing fees and other costs that your host might incur by having you on their team, however, many hosts do have a model where they bring in revenue from their membership fees and training costs. We have heard of agents spending thousands of dollars on training only to make no sales and not even understand their value proposition. However, paying the fee means the host will let you remain an active agent with them regardless of your sales.

Our business model is the exact opposite. We do not charge our agents any fees, in fact, we incur a loss on each new recruit and only make money when an agent starts selling. That, paired with our competitive commission split of 80/20 versus the standard starting commission split of 70/30 (you'll notice this if you do your own research), makes our program competitive. Why do we do this? Well, we know our methods lead to higher revenue from our agents, so we take the loss for a few months knowing we will eventually recoup it through the commission split. Also, not charging a fee and truly only making money when our agents make sales builds trust, our agent's know we are committed to their success.

So, are other host agencies that charge fees MLMs? Not exactly, but many could be considered soft MLMs. We will leave that up to you to decide. Moral of the story here, though, is that you should do your homework. Research multiple hosts and find one aligned with your goals. If you're goal, for example, is to earn six or seven figures, then an agency like ours would be a good fit. However, if you are slow to learn new things, want to do this as a hobby with zero pressure to sell, joining a host with a fee would be a better option. Why? Well, we have requirements to remain with our agency. If you do not meet those requirements, you can be dropped from our team. For example, you must make one sale every 90 days -- it can be anything, a car transfer to your cousin, for example, but we need to know that you are selling.

If your goal is to become a travel agent who focuses on building a client base, receiving ongoing travel education, establishing relationships with suppliers, and providing excellent customer service, we strongly advise against joining a travel MLM. Over the years, we’ve received many questions from travel agents regarding MLMs and the hostility between them and traditional travel agents. When considering both sides, it’s important to take a step back and remember we’re all in this together.

The Stigma and Lack of Potential with MLMs in the Travel Industry

It’s no stretch to say that there is a stigma surrounding MLM agents. At a first glance, MLM agents tend to be considered “not as reputable.” This is often due to their lack of access to the same tools, support, and experience.

If you are a part of an MLM right now, we want you to keep an open mind and know the facts that we’re sharing are to benefit everyone.

Oftentimes, MLMs make promises to people that they’ll be able to make X amount of money or receive gifts and high commissions. More often than not, that potential they promise really isn’t there.

In Cyndi’s experience, she’s trained hundreds of agents to build their businesses to a point where they’re making $100k(+) a year. It’s worth mentioning that she’s never come across an MLM agent that was anywhere close to hitting that mark.

Check the facts

One thing that can be helpful when looking into MLMs is looking into their income disclosure statements. Any public MLM is required to release these statements annually to be transparent about the roles they employ and how much those employees truly make each year.

When checking these reports, the most important thing to look at is the “Average Income” column to see the average amount that employees at different levels are making across the board. You also want to reference the actual percentage of people making that amount.

Sure there may be someone making $700k(+) each year, but what’s the percentage of people actually making that? Most times, it’s less than 1% while a majority of employees are in that wayyy lower range.

Like it or not, the MLM travel agents are actually bringing the travel industry standards down. On paper, these agents are real travel agents, but the lack of training, experience, and income makes people hesitant about what it truly means to be a travel agent and wary of the success that can come with it.

If you’ve been sucked into an MLM, you probably had high hopes going in. If we had to guess, you’re probably now feeling a little deflated and demoralized. It’s easy to turn a blind eye, assuming that MLMs are the way of the entire travel industry world. But, that’s just not true. And we can tell you this out of authority. Cyndi has coached hundreds of agents out of MLMs and into their own businesses. And now, they’re productive and making amazing income they never imagined possible.

The reality is, the fast majority of MLMs travel agents are making nothing, while traditional travel agents with different structures are knocking it out of the park.

Please help me… I signed up because I have participated in more than my fare share of cruises, and they promised free cruising opportunities. what happened was I was just trying to save my bottom line, however, Virgin Voyages invited me for a weeklong ‘treat me like a rockstar’ treatment cruise in their niche cruise industry. I have slowly come to the point that I cannot go to my regular 9-7 job anymore, so I began working hard to make the transition. I have certifications in over 20 cruise lines, river, ocean and expedition. I was preparing for this once in a lifetime, yacht experience with some of the coolest people in the world. Fast forward to yesterday, I finished up my course work for MSC (I’m studying luxury liners right now) and when it was complete, MSC offered me a balcony room for 2 on either a 5 day Bermuda, and their ‘Cay’ island or an 11 day western Caribbean cruise (MY GO TO PLACE BECAUSE I HAVE FRIENDS THERE). This is the dilemma, I can get excited all day about the liners I have sailed with, but those I haven’t… I just can’t do it and look people in the eye. I have to see to believe. So I called my leader and asked how I would be able to attend the FAM trips that my agency sent me personal invitations to (only saying I had to have the course work finished and not sailed with the liner before). My leader informed me that I would have to have a $60,000 year in order to be considered for a CLIA id card. Now, I’m not ignorant by any sense of the word and I know that CLIA has about 20 or so ‘premiere members’ who can forgo the regular stipulations to help newbies out with fam trips. like the IAM, that would suffice. But my leader took pleasure in stealing my joy and excitement. I have spent 3 weeks personally building a website to feature ocean liners that are very popular in the demographic of my audience. He loved the website, but not the thought I would go somewhere for free. also. my booking is gone that is fully paid for in February and I can’t find it on Goccl.com. I have everything I need to do this job and to be successful at it. Another company I talked with charges a $65 fee per month and you get your card and you keep 80% of the commission (whereas at my current co. they keep 60% and don’t pay me for the commissions I make off of drink packages and other things that many lines are now paying commissions on. I have taken Air Travel codes, I have access to two of the best apps for good seating and direct flights for very affordable rates. I have published a what to bring and what not to bring on several itineraries. I am certified with uPLIFt financing and AIG Travel insurance. I am a Carnival, Celebrity, Viking, and Virgin genius. But those ships aren’t for everyone. I will say that Carnival is the cheapest for the comparable accommodations, and the vibe on the ships, is that of fun knows no age and people are content to let others be themselves without any haggle or frustration. I really love the people I meet on Carnival. Celebrity cruisers are a few years younger than me, but their children are young and mine are grown so there is that divide there, but the luxe design of the new Celebrity is amazing. I connect with people very easily. I have been a newspaper editor for over 9 years and It is too much for one person to do all alone. I am ready to do something that I love. I know of all the hospitals and major medical clinics in our 8 county area, and I think group travel may just be the thing to jumpstart my business.

I keep getting told that the company I am with is not an MLM but I have my doubts and the part about not having the resources and proper help to get going sounds just like who I am with. I can’t afford a big start up cost so I thought this was the way to go. Now I have too much invested to stop but I am not making any money so idk if I should continue. I also question it some of the things I have been told are accurate. Idk what to do.

The fact is, compared to traditional travel companies, most don’t get great reviews on the open market. None of these issues make the companies inviable as a way to make money. But, they do suggest that you should be very careful.

1. GoodLife USA

• Focus: Travel and lifestyle club
• Minimum Cost: $79 then $39.50/year (for membership to the discount program and the ability to earn)

Product Overview : GoodLife USA is one of the most well-known MLMs in the travel field. They offer a subscription that gives people various travel-related deals. This includes discounts on cruises, airlines, rental cars, hotels and condos.

The company’s site makes people step through many different pages before even revealing what is on offer. But basically, there are three different memberships: Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Silver has no initial fee and costs $11.95 per month. Gold costs $119 to set up and then $39.95 per month. Platinum costs $269 to set up and then $59.95 per month. The higher plans offer additional discounts, such as hand-selected getaways for Gold and a booking engine for condos with Platinum.

But, all the information is vague. There are no details about what discounts you can expect or how this compares to other services.

Discussions online suggest that the discounts are often limited and many aren’t unique anyway. There is evidence of some people getting good deals. But, I haven’t seen any proof that you can get great savings on a regular basis. Instead, the savings seem to be inconsistent and often aren’t that useful.

The memberships are also expensive. For customers to save money using them, they’d need to be traveling very often. That’s not the case for most people.

Commission Quick View : GoodLife USA uses an unusual model, called a 2 x 20 Shared Social Network structure. It has some visual similarities to a binary compensation system but doesn’t behave in the same way.

The basic idea is that you have various slots and these are automatically filled over time. The amount you earn is then based on which pay line people end up in, along with factors like Commissionable Value (CV).

The process is more confusing than most and the three types of memberships are all treated slightly differently. The site also has pages upon pages of explanation, which is never a good sign. It shouldn’t take that long to explain a compensation plan. As a result, it’s impossible to tell whether the income potential is higher or lower than other companies

The model also seems to mean you’re not earning for sales directly. Instead, your income is based only on the team structure. Of course, I might be wrong. Like I said, the compensation plan is not easy to follow.

Final Thoughts : GoodLife USA doesn’t have an appealing service or a good compensation plan. In trying to create something amazing, they’ve just ended up with a plan that is far more complicated than it needs to be. You can probably still make money but the system certainly isn’t powerful.

2. MWR Life

• Minimum Cost: $89.97/month

Product Overview : MWR Life focuses on the idea of traveling the world and living life to the fullest – and they heavily promote that dream. But, the underlying concept is the same as what GoodLife USA offers and MWR Life is basically just a discount program, one that provides ‘deals’ on various travel-related areas.

This time, there are two memberships to choose from. MWR Life is upfront about these details too, which is always good.

The first is Travel Advantage VIP, which costs $49.97 per month. The other is Travel Advantage Pro, which costs $89.97 per month. The memberships offer most of the same general discounts. The difference is that the Pro version provides loyalty points and extra discount vouchers. It also allows users to book for up to four people, rather than just themselves.

Specifics about the discounts are few and far between, so customers don’t really know what they’re getting. There isn’t much evidence about the discounts online either. If they were powerful, I’d expect blog posts about how much people saved. But, those don’t exist. In fact, most of the positive reviews sound like they’re from people who haven’t even used the discounts themselves.

Commission Quick View : Most network marketing companies offer compensation per sale, along with bonuses from your team. But, MWR Life is vague in this area. It seems like you get $25 per retail customer you refer. Half of that gets paid in the first month of their membership and half in their second month.

But, that’s a lousy commission rate when customers are paying at least $49.97 a month and might be doing so for many months.

There is certainly a team system, but this isn’t well described either. One aspect involves different ranks, where you earn based on the sales that team members make. Another is daily income, which ranges from $3 per day to $1,000 per day, depending on the size of your team. Most people are probably on the low end of the scale. But still, the potential is interesting.

There are various other bonuses too. But, the compensation plan doesn’t offer many specifics at all. So, it’s not clear how these aspects all tie into one another or how you’re even meant to progress.

Members also need to be active and qualified to earn any commissions. That includes commissions from their own sales. Qualified means having 3 Customer Points, which can be achieved by having one Travel Advantage Pro membership or three Travel Advantage VIP memberships in the member’s downline. Active isn’t defined but it probably means that the member needs to pay for the Pro or VIP membership themselves.

Final Thoughts : The compensation plan is confusing and MWR Life doesn’t offer any significant advantages. That aside, you’re paying at least $49.97 each month just for the chance to earn money. You’d have to make a decent amount of sales just to break even.

3. TraVerus Global

• Focus: Health, empowerment and travel
• Minimum Cost: $174.95 initially, $79.95/month and $40/year (for the ability to earn and access to the travel discount program)

Product Overview : TraVerus Global doesn’t just focus on travel. Instead, the company has various products. Their focus seems to be on the idea of enriching life through multiple avenues at once. In particular, they have four key areas:

• Bachar Nutrition : Nutrition products, including supplements, coffee, an energy shot and mosquito repellent capsules.
• TraVerus Go: Their travel discount program.
• Success Training Institute : Offers various business training courses that are meant to teach soft skills
• Flex : Provides the ability to have multiple phone numbers for your mobile. Each number costs a monthly fee.

The combination of products is fairly unusual and none seem especially high quality.

As for TraVerus Go, it is a discount program that offers up to 50% discount on travel (or 70%, depending on where you look). The company claims to have discounts for 400,000 hotels and resorts, along with car rentals at 8,000 nationwide locations.

There are two plans to choose from. The Basic plan costs $39.99 initially and then $29.99 per month. It provides all of the various savings. The other option is their Premium plan. This one costs $174.95 initially plus $79.95 per month and an annual $40 fee.

That second plan offers the same discounts – along with the ability to make money. So, you need to pay almost $80 a month on top of the initial fee, just for the ability to earn.

On a side note, TraVersus Go mostly seems to be rebranding for an older company called Paycation Travel, which I reviewed when it was still active. Some of their discount claims did hold up when I looked at them, although it’s hard to know how they compare to what is out there.

The travel program also seems to be periodically called XStream Travel – but it’s not clear what the difference is or why they keep using different names.

Commission Quick View : There aren’t many details on the compensation plan. But, the company’s YouTube video suggests that customers can earn 75% of the commission on all travel booked through the booking engine, along with earning from your team.

The phrasing states that this is ‘75% of commission paid to XStream Travel’, so you’re just getting a percentage of what the company earns (and it’s not clear what that is). Team commissions are based on this area as well.

Members do also earn by getting people to join the program. The commission here is $50 regardless of whether customers choose the Basic or Premium plan. This seems to be a one-time payment, rather than an ongoing one.

The company also uses a coded system of payment. This style means that only some of the payments are allocated to you. In particular, the first two payments for enrollment seem to go to whoever referred you, while you get the ones after that. This style means you need to make at least three sales before you see any income.

The team aspect is complex and I’m not going to focus on it too much. But, there is a typical rank-based system, along with a matrix approach for earning residual rewards. As always, you’d need a decent team to make progress with this system.

Final Thoughts : The ability to earn from referrals and from people’s purchases is nice but be wary about this company. They are light on the details and this rebranding hasn’t been around for long.

4. Surge 365

• Focus: Travel and earning
• Minimum Cost: $10/month (for the ability to earn) or $477 + $59.95/month (for complete access and membership to the discount program)

Product Overview : Surge 365 has revamped their website and some of their concepts since I last reviewed them but the underlying concepts remain the same. Once again, this is a travel company, offering various discounts.

One unusual thing is their focus. Other companies on this list focus on travel and the associated lifestyle. But, most of the details on the Surge 365 site are about the income opportunity. It’s never a good sign when companies emphasize this area more than their products and services.

Surge 365 has two memberships, but only one of these is for travel. It costs a $477 one-off fee and then $59.95 per month. Actually, it’s closer to $63.50 per month, as there is an associated processing fee.

The subscription offers a ‘members-only pricing platform’, a concierge and weekly specials.

Once again, there are no details about the actual discounts. You would need to sign up to even see what was on offer. But, reviews from users aren’t great and some people mention that they experience error messages when trying to book. There is also little evidence that people are getting discounts.

Commission Quick View : Consultants for Surge 365 get access to a program that the company calls Vortex. This is basically an online booking program that provides those advertised discounts.

With Surge 365, all of your income seems to come from sales of travel, not from membership fees. So, if you can get people using the platform and some of them purchase expensive trips, then you could potentially make a decent amount.

One unusual thing is the memberships. You can join as a Business Associate for $10 a month, which is very inexpensive for this type of company. This does give you the ability to earn, although you don’t get access to Vortex or all of their tools. For full access, you need to have the travel membership. That’s the one that costs $477 initially and then $59.95 per month.

Members can also act as travel agents (with some additional training), booking trips for others. The income potential is significant here too, especially for large trips.

But, there are no details about how much you earn. The amount is likely to be based on the commission that Surge 365 gets and is probably a low percentage of the total cost. For a large trip, that may not matter, while income for small trips may be pretty low.

But remember, you still need to get people to purchase through the company. Unless you take the travel agent angle, they would need to be paying the monthly fee. If you do take the travel agent angle, you probably have to pay that. There may be additional costs too.

Surge 365 heavily promotes the team aspect, including large bonuses for top performers and matching bonuses for the people you recruit. Despite the hype, there are few details about what this entails. The bonuses are great but only if you can progress far enough in the company to earn them.

Final Thoughts : Surge 365 is better than many of the other companies on this list and has more options than just forcing people into an expensive membership. Even so, you’d want to check out the discounts and the approach yourself to make sure it is something that you could promote.

5. Vacations Royale

• Focus: Vacations throughout the world
• Minimum Cost: $3,495 + $195/year (for membership)

Product Overview : Vacations Royale is another site that’s been through significant changes since I first reviewed it. But, they still manage to look like a low-quality version of the other companies on this list. The general principles are the same, including discounts on flights, vacations, activities and the like.

Vacations Royale also has its own booking engine, which is meant to provide discounts. They do have a video of this, so you actually get to see what’s involved before you pay any money.

There is just one membership on offer currently, called their Club Gold Membership. This supports four family members. The site currently offers the membership for a one-time fee of $3,495. That’s a discount and the normal fee is $3,995 (well, that’s what they claim). There is a yearly fee of $195 too.

This is a lot to pay for discounts. Still, it’s a one-time fee, while all of the other companies have monthly memberships. The yearly fee is a pain but it’s relatively small (compared to a monthly membership).

Commission Quick View : The commission approach is different here. Vacations Royale offers 100% of the profit (which is $3,000 – as there’s apparently a $495 processing fee). But, you don’t get anything from your first sale. Your sponsor gets that.

This means you need to make at least two sales to earn any money. That still sounds easy – but you’re trying to get people to spend almost $3,500. That’s not going to be an easy sale to make. You’re meant to be pitching to a warm market too, which means your friends and family.

On the plus side, you do get $3,000 from the first sale that anyone you recruit makes. But, that’s it. There don’t seem to be any subsequent team commissions.

If you could make sales, then the style would be powerful. You’re certainly earning a lot per sale. Still, the membership cost is huge and there’s no evidence that the discounts are any good. I suspect most people simply wouldn’t get anywhere. Besides, Vacations Royale looks low quality. Customers would be expecting much more for a $3,495 fee.

Final Thoughts : The amount per sale is amazing but Vacations Royale isn’t realistic about how easy sales would be. The service is simply too expensive and most people wouldn’t pay that much for potential discounts.

6. ZynTravel

• Focus: Travel
• Minimum Cost: $199 initially + $29.99 – then $19.99/month (for the travel membership and the ability to earn)

Product Overview : ZynTravel comes from the company Zyndio and is fairly similar to the other programs on this list. They offer discounts in various areas, including cruises, hotels, car rental and overall packages.

They do offer details about some of their discounts on the site, which is incredibly unusual. But, these are simply vague claims, like Hong Kong from $149 per night. The highlighted discounts are likely to be their best options and there may be other costs that aren’t obvious.

To see the live discounts and what they apply to, you need a promo code from a distributor or to sign up as a customer yourself (and pay the membership costs). As with other companies, there probably are some discounts. But, these will typically have limitations and they mightn’t be better than services like Groupon.

This time, there are three memberships to choose from. As always, the features and discounts increase along with the cost.

• Gold : $199 initially + $29.99 setup fee – then $19.99/month
• Platinum : $499 initially + $29.99 setup fee – then $19.99/month
• Black Diamond : $999 initially + $29.99 setup fee – then $19.99/month

Unlike other companies, the monthly fee stays the same. All that changes is the initial investment.

But, the memberships aren’t just related to travel. The higher tiers provide more income potential as well. This is a horrible system. It requires people to buy in before they fully understand the company or their potential to make money.

Commission Quick View : The first part of the compensation plan pays a commission for any travel you sell through your affiliate site with the company. This is 25%, 50% or 100% commission, depending on whether you’re a gold, platinum or black diamond member.

Those percentages are based on what the company earns (giving you a percentage of a percentage). ZynTravel doesn’t specify what they get, so the amount you earn is unclear.

There is also a referral bonus for getting people to sign up as members. You earn 20% of the initial fee. There is a team-based element too, where you earn 5% of the fee from anyone your referrals get to join.

Beyond this, ZynTravel uses a 3×2 matrix scheme for team commissions. This involves a 12-position membership tree (2 levels, 3 people on the first level, 9 on the second). You earn commissions by filling this tree. The amount is based on which membership tiers people join.

There are various bonuses too, especially if you progress through the ZynTravel ranks. But, most bonuses are tied into the matrix approaches. This means you need full matrices to earn. It’s not enough to just have a few people in your downline, even if they sell or purchase regularly.

Final Thoughts : The lower monthly cost for ZynTravel is nice but the initial investment fees are extreme. There’s also nothing to suggest that the discounts are unusual.

7. World Ventures

• Focus: DreamTrips and travel
• Minimum Cost: $249.98 and then $54.99/month (which provides the basic membership and the ability to earn)

Product Overview : World Ventures has been in this industry for a surprisingly long time (just check out the date of my initial review! ). The company is also fairly controversial and many people will have heard of it, at least in passing.

Currently, World Ventures mostly focuses on DreamTrips, which are meant to be amazing vacations that are customized for the individual. The company offers various discounts on components of these trips, although details are scarce (as always).

There are two different memberships to choose from. Gold costs $249.98 initially and then $54.99 per month, while Platinum costs $399.98 initially and $99.99 per month. The Platinum version does have more features, including upgrades to trip features. Regardless of the membership, the price is high for discounted travel.

One interesting (albeit slightly outdated) post looked at the discounts available and how they compare to other options. The author noted that there were discounts but she got better ones when using Groupon. With the price of memberships, the discounts would also need to amazing for any user to see benefits.

As she also pointed out, there is the ability to offset the cost of DreamTrips and the discounts may be higher for this type of trip as well. This may make the membership worthwhile for anyone making amazing trips. But honestly, most people won’t have the finances or ambition to do so.

The comments on the post are fascinating too. They highlight many bad experiences, along with some good ones. At the very least, this suggests that you should be careful.

World Ventures may well offer decent discounts, especially if you carefully choose where you go and what you do. But, this doesn’t make it viable as a way to earn. Most of the people you’re promoting to won’t be interested and some may have bad experiences. The whole system just doesn’t seem like it would work, especially not in the long-term.

Commission Quick View : World Ventures is up-front about their compensation plan, which is good. But, that plan is 22 pages long! Needless to say, we’re only going to skim the surface of it here.

Distributors do get a direct payment for individual sales – although World Ventures doesn’t provide many details in their compensation plan. This is likely to apply to the memberships and you may earn from any travel people purchase as well.

Most of the other income comes from your team and this is far more complicated than usual. Some bonuses use a binary model, where you are trying to get two successful teams. Others come from a more traditional unilevel model and there is a rank-based system in place too.

There are various restrictions and requirements along the way. The sales volume you earn can also expire under various conditions. In fact, if you stop being able to pay for your membership (even temporarily) you can lose all of the sales you’ve accumulated. That’s harsh, especially as the membership isn’t cheap.

The end result is a very complex scheme that would be difficult to optimize. World Ventures is still operating, which suggests that the company offers some value and is profitable. Some members may be making money too. But, that doesn’t mean you will. The compensation plan is unrealistic for most people and you may end up spending much more than you earn.

Final Thoughts : World Ventures may have a long history and some interesting ideas – but that doesn’t make them powerful for income. Plus, their DreamTrips would appeal to a narrow audience.

If you were going to try to make money in the travel industry, I’d probably start a travel affiliate website. You could monetize with a program like Klook or Hotels Combined .  Agoda is one more great example. They are just straightforward booking websites that help people book cheap flights and hotels. There are various other options too, including hotel affiliate programs and even camping affiliate programs (for travelers on a budget).

If I absolutely had to pick an MLM to recommend from this list above, I guess I’d recommend Surge 365. The program it is fairly inexpensive (for the basic version) and focuses on selling travel rather than memberships. Even so, I’m not optimistic about the income potential and you’d have to pay the higher monthly fee to get the most out of it.

Any MLM is designed for a particular market. If the MLM say travel MLM doesn’t meet their particular need then they should not get involved in it. That’s why people need to be educated properly about any MLM they plan on joining. There are good educational programs and bad. Find the MLM system that will work for your need and don’t try to fit into a MLM that is not for you. Plan and simple. Don’t down a particular MLM just because it didn’t meet your need. Some people are depending on that income and it does give a person the choice to leave their job and work a part time MLM biz.

How I Turned a Side Hustle into a Million-Dollar Travel Business Say hello to Trapper Martin. He left his corporate job to pursue a career in travel planning - and it's paying off.

Trapper Martin has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. At the age of 12, Martin began his own flower business. By the time he reached high school, he was running a floating restaurant in the middle of an Alabaman lake town. While his career would take him through a tour of culinary management positions, Martin began to cultivate a side interest for travel planning.

"In high school, I organized our senior class trip, and this jump-started my love of travel," Martin recalls. "I used my great-grandfather's travel agent to plan the whole trip on the Big Red Boat, and that's really where everything started. Later, I became the group leader of planning all our personal trips, and as my career moved along, I started to get more serious about travel planning." In 2011, Martin embarked on a fortuitous vacation cruise that would soon alter his career trajectory altogether. "I booked a trip for the inaugural cruise on Carnival's Magic, and I, pretty randomly, met a Dream Vacations franchise owner on the trip," Martin says. He and his partner Shane (they eventually got married) joined a few tours with the franchise owner while on this trip and got to talking more seriously about what it means to be a Dream Vacations travel agent. This got the wheels turning for Martin—he could finally turn a passion of his into a progressive income. When Martin returned from this trip, he decided to take the plunge and become a Dream Vacations franchise owner. "Everyone thought I was crazy, but I really felt like it was worth it for me," he says with a laugh. "I completed the training and almost immediately started to see some successes with it."

At the beginning of his Dream Vacations journey, Martin was still working full-time as a district manager in the food-service industry. But with his increasing success in travel planning, he had to make an important decision. "In year three, I hit roughly half a million dollars in sales, and it became difficult to grow beyond that while still working a full-time job," he says. In 2016, Martin left his full-time job in corporate America to pursue his travel planning ventures full-time. In January 2020, Martin was so confident about the future of travel and the business model that Shane came into the business full-time.

Reaching $1 million in sales despite the global health crisis.

Since making that leap, Martin has grown his business nearly 10x and operates as one of Dream Vacations' top-producing franchises. As any business owner can relate, his success has also been accompanied by trials and tribulations—a more recent one being the COVID-19 pandemic. With the global health crisis inciting international border closures and the travel market essentially grinding to a halt, things seemed pretty bleak for those involved in the travel industry. Though this situation seemed like the perfect storm to upset Martin's business, he was able to achieve over $1 million in sales despite the pandemic.

Martin attributes this success to a mixture of personal effort and Dream Vacations' rapid response and top-notch communications throughout the crisis. "With the rise in cruise cancellations, we had to quickly pivot to focusing on-land travel, and research all of the different avenues to make sure that each trip would be safe for customers," Martin explains. "It was a lot to keep up with, but Dream Vacations was completely on top of maintaining clear communications as new information regarding the virus and travel restrictions came to light. Dream Vacations has been transparent through all of this, and that has not only assuaged a lot of fears but also validated my franchise ownership with them."

Beyond Dream Vacations' helpful planning to keep franchise owners and their customers protected throughout the pandemic, Martin also believes that his franchise ownership has been validated through the general experience with the company. "This franchise opportunity is unlike any other chain operation I have been a part of," Martin says. "One of the things that I appreciated the most was the support network. Dream Vacations actively encourages you to reach out to other franchisees—there's no MLM or competition involved, everyone wants to see each other succeed," he says.

For travel-planning hopefuls out there, Martin encourages research into Dream Vacations. "With this type of work as a franchisee owner, there is no get rich quick scheme. You have to put in the time and effort, but with all of the training, support, and marketing that Dream Vacations offers, you will be completely set up to make a living from doing what you love."

6. eXp World Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPI )

2021 Revenue: $3.80 billion

eXp World Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPI) is a real estate brokerage company that has operations in 24 countries across the world and has over 86,000 real estate agents attached to the company. The company recently launched its operations in Dubai, UAE, in December 2022.

eXp World Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPI) was founded in 2009 by Glenn Sanford. Sanford returned as the CEO of the company earlier this month during these uncertain times as benchmark interest rates, and rising inflation is adversely impacting the real estate sector. eXp World Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPI) splits the commission with its agent in an 80/20 ratio with a cap placed at $16,000 and a per-month fee of $85.

East 72 shared its outlook on eXp World Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPI) in its Q1 2022 investor letter. Here’s what the firm said:

“Investors don’t like listed real estate brokers – at all. There are three significant US listed residential real estate brokers or franchisors (which includes)  eXp World Holdings  (EXPI: market capitalisation US$3.03billion less $108m in cash) with 72,000 agents connected via the eXp World and Virbela platforms; EXPI earned ~$41million in operating profit in 2021, after $144million in stock based compensation!”

In addition to eXp World Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPI), Amway, Natura & Co, and Vorwerk are also some of the biggest MLM companies in the world.

If the product is 100% legitimate & valuable, it’s entirely possible to get people to sign-up and continue paying you.

If the product is subpar, you’ll usually burn those bridges kinda quickly and end up with $0 coming in each month.

The biggest issue I’ve seen is that this puts significant stress on your personal relationships, as you’re reliant on selling to your “network.”

Think about it: if you KNEW that every time your friend Sally called, she’d be trying to sell you on one of her products… you’d eventually stop answering Sally’s calls.

“Management remains cautious on the market outlook for MLM.

“However, we expect the improved marketing initiatives would increase its members’ performance and retention rate,” TA Research said in a report.

Beshom posted core earnings of RM7.7mil for the nine-month period of financial year 2024.

Revenue declined by 14.8% year-on-year on the back of weaker performance of its MLM, wholesale and retail segments.

The MLM segment’s earnings before interest and taxes for the nine-month period plunged 80.1% year-on-year in tandem with a decline in revenue of 29.4%.

“The weaker result was mainly due to poor market sentiment in domestic economy, which resulted in cautious spending, especially on non-essential goods.

“This was exacerbated by stiff competition from other MLM market players,” the research house said.

TA Research said the results were within expectations and it expects a stronger 4Q24 performance.

For its wholesale segment, it said Beshom planned to promote its key products by offering overseas trips as incentives to its customers.

“Additionally, we believe that robust tourist arrivals will boost its sales of goods to duty-free shops in the upcoming quarter.

“We also anticipate the retail division to mark an improvement on its top line for 4Q24 with the rollout of a year-end loyalty members’ sales campaign,” said the research house, which maintained a “sell” on Beshom.

TA Research kept the target price (TP) unchanged at 80 sen based on 15 times 2024 earnings per share.

Meanwhile, CGS International (CGSI) Research reiterated its “hold” recommendation on the stock with a lower TP of 93 sen from 99 sen.

This is said reflected the overall tougher operating conditions faced by the company, specifically the weaker consumer spending environment and stiffer competition in its MLM segment.

“CGSI Research’s Economics team estimates private consumption to grow at 6.5% year-on-year and we expect Beshom’s operating environment to remain challenging in the near-to-medium term,” it added.

The research firm said government stimulus measures could offer some respite.

“We believe such stimulus measures will largely target the lower and middle income groups that make up the bulk of Beshom’s customer base, providing some support to the company’s earnings in FY25 and FY26,” the research house said.

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
