Ilan Eshkeri’s ‘SPACE STATION EARTH’ – Tour 2022

General Entertainment Associates in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) have announced the U.K. and European touring dates for Space Station Earth , created by award-winning composer Ilan Eshkeri featuring awe-inspiring live music combined with spellbinding visuals from the International Space Station : an ultimate immersive concert, that will transport audiences from the Earth to the stars.

The European tour kicks off on 15th May 2022 at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall and will then continue its space journey throughout Europe (Denmark, Sweden, and Germany) .

Space Station Earth is a music-led, multi-media experience that allows the audience to see through the eyes of astronauts and to contemplate our planet, the stars, and the exploration of the universe. Featuring no dialogue or narration, audiences can expect to lose themselves in the extraordinary visuals and emotionally charged live music and leave filled with awe and wonder, taking audiences as close as possible to the unique experience by astronauts.

Award-winning composer and show creator Ilan Eshkeri has combined his compositions with film from astronauts aboard the ISS as well as images from European Space Agency locations. This mostly never-before-seen footage will be projected across three massive screens with a light show to create an incredible experience.

Space Station Earth will tour through the U.K. and Europe with special guest ESA astronauts who will participate in a pre-show Q&A with Eshkeri . The inclusion of these real-life heroes will give audiences the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the first-person accounts of the few humans who have lived off the planet and how that has affected the way in which they appreciate and understand the world.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the show and his journey creating it, Ilan Eshkeri commented:

“My music has taken to me to many unexpected and extraordinary places, but when Astronaut Tim Peake got in touch to say he was a fan of my work a door was opened to one of the most amazing and inspiring journeys of my life, the result of which is Space Station Earth.

There are so many facts and figures about travelling to the International Space Station, but no one has ever told the emotional journey that astronauts go on. A journey that has startlingly similar experiences for astronauts from all corners of the world, and it was this realisation that inspired me to create Space Station Earth.

Deciding to direct the film element was ambitious for a composer.  I had a sense of what I wanted to achieve and an incredible team both on location and in the edit.  ESA provided unprecedented access, I got to see rocket launches, a zero-gravity flight, and a chance to get lost in their video archive as well as the opportunity to get advice from ESA scientists and Astronauts.

At the same time, I started creating the music with synthesisers.  I spent a few days coming up with different ideas then I started to add strings, brass, and choir to deliver the awe-inspiring epic scale only an orchestra can.

Major inspirations were Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Steve Riech as well as Koyanisquatsi, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Fantasia.

With Space Station Earth, music, film and staging come together to create the visceral and immersive experience of going to space and looking back at our home, a journey very few have undertaken, communicated to the audience through pure emotion.”

ESA astronaut Tim Peake said of Space Station Earth :

“There aren’t many words that can truly describe the beauty of seeing Earth from space.  But Space Station Earth attempts to do this, using music and video, to capture the emotion of human spaceflight and exploration.  Featuring previously unreleased footage from ESA astronauts and accompanied by a live orchestra, the show creates a unique experience, one that celebrates space and unites the audience, just as exploration unites humankind.”

Humanity has long been fascinated by the universe beyond our planet. The few people that have experienced a voyage into space often express a similar sensation: the realisation that we are all travelling together through space and time on our own space station called Earth.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the show and his journey creating it, Ilan Eshkeri commented, My music has taken to me to many unexpected and extraordinary places, but when Astronaut Tim Peake got in touch to say he was a fan of my work a door was opened to one of the most amazing and inspiring journeys of my life, the result of which is Space Station Earth.

ESA astronaut Tim Peake said of Space Station Earth, There aren't many words that can truly describe the beauty of seeing Earth from space. The inclusion of these real-life heroes will give audiences the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the first-person accounts of the few humans who have lived off the planet and how that has affected the way in which they appreciate and understand the world.

Five partner Space Agencies worked together to build the International Space Station, which now involves people from more than 15 countries, making it the world's largest international cooperative program in science and technology. It has been permanently occupied by people from these different countries, working together for over 20 years. It is both a pinnacle of human achievement and a beacon of hope that is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.

It has been said that living on the space station you realise that if you don't look after the vessel you are travelling in and you don't look after your fellow travellers, you won't survive the journey. Then, when you look down upon Earth, you realise that the same is true. We have to look after this planet we're travelling on and we have to look after each other in order to survive the journey. This is the story of Space Station Earth.

4 astronauts launch to space, land at International Space Station: Meet the crew

F our astronauts launched into space on Sunday and have landed at the International Space Station that will become their home for the next several months.

SpaceX's Falcon rocket launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying the four astronauts on the Dragon spacecraft. They include Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps from NASA and Alexander Grebenkin from Russia.

NASA confirmed the new crew entered the space station just before 4 a.m. EST on Tuesday and will replace a crew that have been there since August from the U.S., Denmark, Japan and Russia.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The new crew will stay on board the ISS for six months, and will oversee the arrival of Boeing's Starliner capsule with test pilots in late April, and the Sierra Space's Dream Chaser in mini shuttle after.

Here's what to know about the astronauts who have landed at the ISS.

Can astronauts vote from space? How the International Space Station becomes a polling place

Matthew Dominick

The commander of the mission, Matthew Dominick joined NASA's Astronaut Candidate Class in 2017. A Colorado native, he was commissioned for flight training and designated as a Naval Aviator in 2007 and has more than 1,600 hours of flight time.

Michael Barratt

Michael Barratt is the mission's pilot, and was selected from NASA in 2000. Prior to the current mission, Barratt has spent 212 days in space across two spaceflights.

A doctor, Barratt was born in Vancouver, Washington and is the oldest full-time astronaut to fly in space. He will turn 65 in April. He is the only crew member who has been to space before.

Jeanette Epps

The mission specialist, Jeanette Epps is the second Black woman to be part of a long-term mission to the ISS. She was selected in 2009 as an astronaut by NASA.

Prior to liftoff, Epps said she is especially proud to be a role model for Black girls, demonstrating that spaceflight “is an option for them, that this is not just for other people.”

Born in Syracuse, New York, she worked for the Ford Motor Company and the CIA before becoming an astronaut.

Alexander Grebenkin

Joining the three NASA astronauts is Alexander Grebenkin, a Roscosmos cosmonaut mission specialist. Before he became a cosmonaut, Grebenkin served in the technical and operational units of the Russian Armed Forces' Air Force.

What is the International Space Station?

Designed and operated thanks to a global partnership of space agencies, the International Space Station has been home to crews of astronauts, cosmonauts and plenty of others since November 2000, NASA  says .

More than 260 spacefarers from 20 countries have visited to the International Space Station,  including 163 from the United States  alone, according to the U.S. space agency.

Crew members who live and conduct scientific experiment aboard the space station orbit Earth 16 times a day. The orbital outpost is larger than a six-bedroom house with six sleeping quarters, two bathrooms, a gym, and a 360-degree view bay window, according to  NASA .

How long does it take to get to the International Space Station?

Depending on where the ISS is in Earth's orbit, NASA says spacecraft can arrive at the space station as soon as four hours to three days after launching from Earth.

How many people are aboard the International Space Station?

Four astronauts joined the seven people aboard the International Space Station early Tuesday morning. Those 11 will be aboard the space station together for a few days until four of the earlier crew members − Jasmin Moghbeli, Andreas Mogensen, Satoshi Furukawa and Konstantin Borisov − return to Earth, NASA says. After they return, there will again be seven people aboard the ISS.

Other astronauts aboard include Loral O’Hara, Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chubb.

China's space station, Tiangong: A complete guide

The three-module Chinese space station hosts many scientific experiments.

China's space station, Tiangong, orbits Earth at an altitude between 217 and 280 miles (340 to 450 kilometers), approximately the same orbital height as the International Space Station (ISS).

The Chinese Manned Space Agency (CMSA) built Tiangong — which means "Heavenly Palace" — in low Earth orbit, launching each of the three modules that make up the station between 2021 and 2022. The CMSA launched Tianhe , the first station module, on April 28, 2021, the second module Wentian on July 24, 2022, and the third module Mengtian on Oct. 31, 2022.

The first crew to visit China's space station, Shenzhou 12, arrived on June 16, 2021 , when only the core module Tianhe was in orbit. The taikonauts — Chinese astronauts — spent 90 days aboard Tianhe , approximately three times longer than any previous Chinese crewed spaceflight.

The CMSA hopes to keep Tiangong continuously inhabited by a minimum of three astronauts for at least a decade. Over that stretch, the space station will host many experiments from both China and other countries.

China space station FAQs

Is the chinese space station complete.

The Chinese space station was completed on Nov. 5, 2022 , following a maneuver to shift the recently arrived Mengtian module to its permanent docking port.

Why does China have its own space station?

China is excluded from the ISS program, largely due to U.S. concerns over the Chinese space programs' links with the People's Liberation Army, the military branch of the ruling Communist Party. In 2011, Congress prohibited NASA from cooperating substantially with its Chinese counterpart without express prior authorization. This law, known as the Wolf Amendment, makes it very difficult for China to participate in the ISS program, if the nation even wishes to do so.

China is not an ISS partner, and no Chinese astronaut has ever visited the venerable outpost. As such, the nation's only option for off-Earth work was to build its own space station.

Is the Chinese space station bigger than the ISS?

The Chinese space station is much smaller than the International Space Station with only three modules, compared with 16 modules on the ISS, which has hosted astronaut crews continuously since November 2000.

Tiangong space station specifications

Tiangong is much smaller than the International Space Station , with only three modules compared with 16 modules on the ISS. Tiangong is also considerably lighter than the ISS, which weighs about 400 tons (450 metric tons); the Chinese station is about 20% as massive.

The 54-foot-long (16.6 meters) Tianhe module launched with a docking hub that allows it to receive Shenzhou crew and Tianzhou cargo spacecraft. A large robotic arm helped position the Mengtian and Wentian modules and assists astronauts during spacewalks.

Tianhe is much larger than the Tiangong 1 and 2 test space labs that China launched in the last decade and nearly three times heavier, at 24 tons (22 metric tons). The new Tiangong, combined with visiting Shenzhou and Tianzhou craft, provides a wealth of usable space for China's astronauts. Indeed, its occupants will feel like "they will be living in a villa," compared with how little space was available in China's previous space labs, Bai Linhou, deputy chief designer of the space station, told CCTV back in June 2021.

Tianhe features regenerative life support, including a way to recycle urine , to allow astronauts to stay in orbit for long periods. It is the main habitat for the astronauts and also houses the propulsion systems needed to keep the space station in orbit.

Tiangong will be joined by a huge, Hubble-like space telescope , which will share the space station's orbit and be able to dock with it for repairs, maintenance and possibly upgrades. Named Xuntian, which translates to "survey the heavens," the telescope will have a 6.6-foot (2 m) diameter mirror, slightly smaller than that of Hubble , but will have a field of view 300 times greater. Xuntian will aim to survey 40% of the sky over 10 years using its huge, 2.5-billion-pixel camera.

The space station could potentially be expanded to six modules, if everything goes according to plan. "We can further expand our current three-module space station combination into a four-module, cross-shaped combination in the future," Bai told CCTV. The second Tianhe core module could then allow two more modules to join the orbital outpost.

If the name "Tiangong" sounds familiar, that's because China's two pathfinder space labs also shared that name. Tiangong 1 reached Earth orbit in September 2011 and hosted two crewed missions, Shenzhou 9 in June 2012 and Shenzhou 10 in June 2013. Tiangong 2 launched in September 2016 and welcomed the Shenzhou 11 astronauts aboard for a 30-day mission the following month.

Neither of the space labs exists today; Tiangong 1 made an uncontrolled reentry to Earth's atmosphere in April 2018, burning up over the Pacific Ocean . And Tiangong 2 was also steered to a planned demise, over the Pacific, in July 2019.

Tiangong's project history

Tiangong's path to orbit has been a long one. The project was first approved in 1992, after which the country set about developing the Shenzhou crew spacecraft and the Long March 2F rocket to send astronauts into space. Yang Liwei became China's first astronaut in space in October 2003 and made China the third country in the world to independently send humans into orbit.

China expressed interest in joining the International Space Station partners, but the possibility was ended by the 2011 decree passed by U.S. lawmakers, which effectively banned NASA from coordinating directly with China or any Chinese-owned company . This means direct collaboration between NASA and Chinese space stations is strictly prohibited, making the prospect of sending U.S. astronauts to Tiangong (or Chinese astronauts to the ISS) virtually impossible.

To be able to build and operate a crewed space station, China first needed to test out crucial space station systems, including life support and technologies for rendezvous and docking of spacecraft in orbit while traveling 17,448 mph (28,080 kph). To accomplish this, China launched the 9-ton (8.2 metric tons) Tiangong 1 space lab in 2011 and subsequently sent the uncrewed Shenzhou 8 and then the crewed Shenzhou 9 and 10 to join Tiangong 1 in orbit.

The upgraded but similarly sized Tiangong 2 launched in 2016 and hosted the two-astronaut crew of Shenzhou 11 for just over a month, setting a new national record for human spaceflight mission duration.

As the China Manned Space Agency checked off these initial milestones, the agency was also focused on developing new, larger Long March heavy-lift rockets to make a space station possible. The Long March 5B was designed specifically to launch the huge space station modules into low Earth orbit. The same rocket was the source of one of the largest uncontrolled reentries in recent decades following the launch of Tianhe in late April 2021. The launches of Mengtian and Wentian featured similar uncontrolled Long March 5B falls, drawing further criticism from the U.S. and other nations.

In 2014 China completed its new, coastal spaceport at Wenchang, specifically to launch these larger-diameter rockets, which need to be delivered by sea.

You can find out where the Tiangong space station is with these helpful resources from N2YO.com . Explore Tiangong with this interactive virtual exhibit from the China Manned Space Agency.

6 Space Missions to Watch in March 2024: SpaceX, Rocket Lab and More

March's space watch list includes two crewed iss missions and two rocket lab launches..

SpaceX

February is ending on an exciting note for the space industry. Last Thursday (Feb. 22), “Odysseus,” a cargo moon lander made by Intuitive Machines, a Houston-based aerospace company, became the nation’s first spacecraft since 1972 to successfully make a soft landing on a lunar surface. As the winter season comes to a close, countries across the globe are gearing up to send more vessels into space.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is expected to launch a crewed mission to the International Space Station (ISS) delayed from February. The company will also begin preparing for the next orbital test flight of Starship now that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has closed its mishap investigation of the last test in November 2023. Peter Beck’s Rocket Lab will be launching its reusable Electron rocket for the 45th and 46th time in one month. And o n the government side, Japan and Russia have two science missions scheduled.

Here are six space missions to watch in March:

  • March 1: SpaceX’s eighth Crew Dragon mission to ISS.  SpaceX and NASA originally scheduled this mission, named “Crew-8,” for Feb.15. They are now aiming March 1 to send four astronauts to the ISS for a six-month stay. Liftoff is scheduled in the very early morning at 12:04 a.m. EST from the historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The four-person crew include NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps, as well as Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin.
  • March 9: Japan’s Space One launches KAIROS maiden flight. One week after the SpaceX mission, Japanese space company Space One is scheduled to launch a rocket called KAIROS for the first time from Spaceport Kii in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture . The private company wi l l launch a four-stage small satellite vehicle for the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center, which operates information-gathering satellites (IGS) for Japan’s spy satellite program.
  • March 10: Rocket Lab ’s 45th Electron launch from New Zealand . New Zealand- and U.S.-based space startup Rocket Lab is scheduled to launch its 45th Electron mission , this time for Synspective, a Japanese company that operates Earth-imaging satellites . A two-week launch window will open on March 10. The mission, named “Owl Night Long,” will lift off from a launch pad in New Zealand.
  • March 20: Rocket Lab’s 46th Electron launch from Virginia . Rocket Lab is scheduled to launch another Electron mission later in March for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), an agency under the Department of Defense that operates reconnaissance satellites for the U.S. government. The 46th Electron mission, named “ Live and Let Fly,” will lift off from Wallops, Va. during a launch window opening on March 20.
  • March 21: Russia sends three astronauts to the ISS. In addition to SpaceX’s Crew-8, Russia is also sending astronauts to the ISS in March. The crew include cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky of Russia and Marina Vasilevskaya of Belarus, as well as NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson.  Dyson will spend six months aboard the space station, conducting scientific experiments on matters such as the behavior of fire in space, while   Novitskiy and Vasilevskaya will only be on the space station for 12 days.
  • TBD: Blue Origin ’s New Shepard tourism flight. While there is no date specified yet, Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin may resume launching space tourists using its New Shepard rocket after being grounded for more than 15 months. The space company received clearance from the FAA in December 2023 to resume New Shepard operation. Prior to the ban, triggered by a mid-flight explosion in late 2022, Blue Origin had been launching the rocket roughly once every two months.

In preparation for NASA’s SpaceX 30th commercial resupply mission, the agency will stream an International Space Station National Lab science webinar at 1 p.m. EST Friday, March 8, to discuss the hardware, technology demonstrations, and science experiments headed to the space station.

NASA will provide coverage of the webinar on the agency’s website .

SpaceX is targeting no earlier than mid-March to launch its Dragon cargo spacecraft on top of a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The science webinar will include the following participants:

  • Heidi Parris, associate program scientist, NASA’s International Space Station Program
  • Davide Marotta, science program director for in-space biomedicine, ISS National Laboratory
  • Marc Elmouttie, research group leader, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization
  • Paula Grisanti, CEO, National Stem Cell Foundation

SpaceX’s Dragon will deliver new science investigations, supplies, and equipment for the international crew, including tests of technologies to monitor sea ice, automate 3D mapping, and create nanoparticle solar cells.

Cargo resupply by U.S. companies increases NASA’s ability to conduct more investigations aboard the orbiting laboratory. Those investigations lead to new technologies, medical treatments, and products that improve life on Earth. Other U.S. government agencies, private industries, and academic and research institutions can also conduct microgravity research through our partnership with the International Space Station National Laboratory.

Humans have occupied the space station continuously since November 2000. In that time, 279 people and a variety of international and commercial spacecraft have visited the orbital outpost. It remains the springboard to NASA’s next great leap in exploration, including future missions to the Moon under the Artemis campaign, and ultimately, human exploration of Mars.
