World's best Peacock Bass fishing trip in all Brazil, Amazon

Yes we did it.

The world’s biggest peacock bass (28 lbs) has been caught with Capt Peacock on Feb. 2010 by Bill Gassmann from Iowa and registered by IGFA (International Game Fishing Association). He landed this monster (see pic. on the left) on his first Peacock Bass trip ever. The 27 lbs fish stood as the world record for 17 years, and many people thought it would never be broken.

Fly Fishing in the Amazon River basin

All inclusive fishing trips in the most exclusive and pristine areas of the amazon brazil.

River Plate Angler´s fishing rights to exclusive areas is the key element to exceptional brazil amazon fly fishing. In cooperation with the authorities River Plate has obtained many exclusive private-water fishing leases over the last two decades, which guarantees your best opportunity for fishing success and directly benefits the communities in the area as well as it helps sustainability of the fishery with a strict catch and release policy.

Thanks to these permits our guests don’t waste time in marginal over-fished waters, due to the high fishing pressure from commercial, survival and sport-fishing as it happens with river areas which are open to the public.

The tropical fresh water fish species of the Amazon Basin are pound for pound arguably the most aggressive, hardest fighting fish on Earth. These acrobatic and colorful jungle species readily take flies and offer unparalleled experiences for the fly fishing angler, both for numbers of fish and size.

When fishing conditions are favorable, peacock bass provide more strikes and fly fishing action than any other species and are arguably the hardest fighting freshwater fish pound for pound—30, 40, 50 fish per day are not uncommon, as well as payara, surubi, corvina, bicuda, pacu and other exotic species.

Fly-In Floating Cabins

amazon rainforest fishing trips

The infrastructural aspect that distinguishes our Amazon fly fishing trips is our truly unique and highly mobile, deluxe, air conditioned Fly-In Floating Cabins , introduced in 1996. Due to the roaring success of this lodging concept, we have added five similar, independent cabin facilities!

Drawing only four inches of water, our Fly-In Floating Cabins enable our guests to move on a daily basis to un-fished river segments in air-conditioned comfort and style throughout our exclusive (privately leased) fishing grounds. Our highly mobile, shallow-drafting Fly-In Floating Cabins overcome shallow-water barriers such as sand bars which block the passage of other forms of navigation.

We take our intimate 8–12 guest parties from Manaus directly to our comfortable Fly-In Floating Cabins in charter planes to nearby landing strips. Our guests wake up every morning in their Fly-In Floating Cabin , along a Caribbean-like white-sand beach, next to a remote, virgin lagoon in the heart of the savagely beautiful Amazon rainforest.

Fishing in the Amazon

The amazon rainforest is a fisherman’s paradise. over 2000 different species of fish inhabit these waters, with many new species being discovered every year. this is more than double the amount of species found in all of the atlantic ocean. can you imagine casting lures or flies into these remote waters searching for that prized peacock bass perhaps you may want to go after the legendary giant catfish from the depths maybe you would like to try your skill with a hand spear under nothing but the moonlight you can do all that and much more; join us on the remote tahuayo river for the ultimate fishing adventure..

amazon rainforest fishing trips

Fishing in our region

The rainforest is a dynamic ecosystem, constantly changing due to the yearly influx of water from the andes mountains. at times water levels can rise more than a foot in one day. generally, the best season for fishing is august to november. this is when we would recommend more serious fisherman to visit the tahuayo. during this time water levels are at their lowest and fish are concentrated into the main river channels., the tahuayo is home to some of the most prized game fish in the amazon. some of the most popular of which include the peacock bass (butterfly), arowana, catfish (many varieties, some which grow over 200lbs), piranha, pacu, oscar, and vampire fish (payara). whether you are a professional or just an amateur you never know what you will find when you cast a lure into the river., fishing gear, we do provide basic gear and tackle only for simple piranha fishing. this includes a cane fishing pole or for those interested, a fishing spear. for those with a more serious interest in fishing it will be necessary to bring your own gear and tackle. please take a look at our full itinerary which includes a detailed bait and tackle list., reservation is made with a deposit of $250 ., 3% service charge may be added, all amazon land trip purchases are 75% refundable up to 40 days before trip departure.

capped-heron-near-tahuayo-lodge

We recommend the purchase of travel insurance.

Travel protection should be purchased to cover most penalty costs in the event you need to cancel or change your travel plans.  it also can provide medical and emergency assistance protection.  amazonia expeditions does not assume responsibility for problems or losses arising from the operation of flights such as cancellations, delays or lost luggage. if you do not take the recommended flight and arrive late you may have to pay for a chartered private boat to the lodge. for protection against problems with airlines or other problems such as illness or political or natural disasters beyond control of the tour operator we strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance..

Our time in the jungle was an absolute highlight on our trip to Peru! Truly amazing! …Again, we had the most wonderful time. Almost more than words can say. The jungle and the Tahuayo Lodge hold very special places in our hearts and CAN NOT WAIT to return. Thank you again for offering such an amazing trip.

Our trip was INCREDIBLE. The lodge was great, the food was amazing, and the staff were all so friendly. We loved our stays at the B&B, the main lodge, and the ARC.

6 Things I Learned from Fishing the Amazon

OutdoorHub Contributors    12.27.15

6 Things I Learned from Fishing the Amazon

If you want to take a trip of a lifetime to slam monster peacock bass in the Amazon rainforest, there are a few things you should absolutely know before you go. I recently went on a fishing trip to the Amazon and learned many of these things the hard way. These six things can make or break your trip.

1. Have the right gear or suffer the consequences

You are going to be in the jungle where the local bait shop doesn’t exist. You either have the right gear or don’t. That said, you don’t need to bring an entire tackle shop with you.

Reels: You will be retrieving baits fast, so if you don’t want to burn out before lunch a high retrieve-ratio reel like the Abu Garcia Revo Rocket is an absolute must-have. In addition, for punishing massive peacock bass, I recommend the Revo Beast for its drag system.

Rods: Almost all of your baits will be best thrown on a medium-heavy or heavy action rod. Bring three rods every day and keep one at camp for backup. You will want to have different baits strung up to make quick follow up casts.

Baits: You can bring everything you own, but I’m willing to bet you’ll only throw woodchoppers, musky-style jigs (piranha will destroy material so bring plenty), X-Rap SubWalks, and jumping minnows. Swimbaits on schooling rigs can also be effective and lipless crankbaits or spoons are nice to have to catch piranha.

Line: Bring 80 pounds of braided line and a few steal leaders (for piranha) and you should be good.

2. Pack smart for daily battles

The right clothing, medicine, and gear can make or break your entire trip. There isn’t a superstore so come prepared. Every morning when you head out it’s nice to have a compact dry bag with all your essentials to enjoy the day and survive the elements. This bag should include first aid, sunscreen, reel lubricant, survival items (you never know), and pain meds and vitamin K from all the big fish you will be landing. Billy Chapman of Anglers Inn International offers his fishermen an Amazon Tough Bag for around $199 and I highly suggest you pick this up.

It’s going to be 95 degrees almost every day, so don’t be ignorant and be sure to pack lightweight pants and long-sleeved shirts. Pack your buff and pick up some sun gloves if you don’t buy the Amazon Tough Bag. Be smart about sun protection or stay at the lodge with a sun burn while someone else catches your fish.

3. Travel prep and execution is vital

Don’t leave for your trip and not know the details about your timeline, lodging, and transportation. Transportation is really critical and often overlooked.

Remember that Portuguese isn’t Spanish. Do yourself a favor and try and learn a few simple phrases before and during your stay, because if you have a guide that isn’t native to the jungle speaking perfect English you’re probably doing something wrong. You also must get a visa to travel to Brazil if you live in the United States. The process is somewhat long, so apply four to five months out.

4. Don’t cut corners on service, it’s not worth it

Sure you can fish the Amazon for different prices, but don’t be that guy jealous of another group that had Wi-Fi, premium meals, daily laundry service, and compete end-to-end service. Saving $1,000 for a lesser experience isn’t worth it if your fishing boat breaks down, you are uncomfortable, or your safety is compromised. Go with someone who sells out every year and often to repeat customers.

Don't skimp out on services. Would you rather fish and stay on a boat like this or in a shanty? Image courtesy of Colin Anthony.

I fish with Anglers Inn International because they set the bar in the Amazon for top service. One of the options they offer is called the “mothership experience,” which entails living aboard a three-level yacht traveling up the Rio Negro and pulling bass boats. Late nights on the rooftop drinking a beer watching shoreline stream past while smoking a cigar is unforgettable. You can also opt for the jungle lodge, allowing you to be deep in the jungle with access to Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a swimming pool. The Rio Negro Lodge is a great spot to take on peacock bass.

5. Spend time in Manaus to eat and absorb

Manaus is a city of 2 million people that was built by river boats and has a fascinating dichotomy of new construction and abandoned buildings. From high-end malls to wild roaming dogs and crazy drivers, Manaus is exceptionally unique. If you don’t eat at a Brazilian steakhouse while in Brazil, you are probably crazy! One of my favorites was  Bufalo . If you want a killer hotel for a night in Manaus, then try Tropical and ask for their fisherman’s rate.

6. Fish missed strikes

There is no shame in being at the back of the boat when fishing for peacock bass. Often a fish will strike on your buddy’s bait and miss, thus giving you time to pick up the reward. Although both you and your buddy can be throwing woodchopper baits, it can be more lucrative to have a woodchopper paired with a subsurface bait pounding the same water. Work together with your fishing partner to share the upsides of double-teaming the same water—you will catch more fish.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Amazon river fishing tour details, overview for amazon river fishing tour.

Take the fishing trip of a lifetime in the beautiful Peruvian Amazon! The rivers, lakes, and streams of this corner of the Amazon are absolutely ideal for anyone who loves to fish. You’ll have unmatched fishing opportunities every day from the remote wilderness lodges where you’ll be spending your nights.

The Amazon Rainforest is home to over 2000 different species of fish and has an incredible amount of plants and animals that can’t be found anywhere else on earth. You’ll have the chance to look for monkeys, caiman, and the Amazon pink dolphin on your adventures. While you’ll spend plenty of time at the rod, you can also tailor your excursions to add unique Amazon-only experiences to your trip. Spend the morning fishing in the flooded forest, and then take an afternoon hike to search for poison dart frogs.

The Amazon and all its natural wonders will be yours to explore on this amazing guided fishing adventure. Now, who’s going to catch the big one?

Itinerary for Amazon River Fishing Tour

Travel the river from iquitos to the tahuayo tributary.

To start your tour, you’ll be picked up from either the airport in Iquitos or your hotel. This afternoon, you’ll take a boat ride up the mighty Amazon towards your lodge.

After getting settled, enjoy an evening excursion and a leisurely dinner.

Fish and Explore the Tahuayo Area

The wooden lodge where you’re staying is built right over the water, on the edge of a “varzea” flood plain forest. There are plenty of ways you can explore this magnificent natural reserve! Be sure to plan your itinerary with your guides early so that you can be sure to fit in everything you’ll want to do.

For the next few days, you’re free to fish the nearby areas and take excursions as you please with your guides.

Fishing Lake Tapaje and Lake Charo

Your guides will help you select the perfect fishing spots on Lake Tapaje, Lake Charo, and the Tahuayo River.

You’ll want to try Quebrada Palmichal, an inlet known for its peacock butterfly bass, and Lake Tabano, a flooded forest and fish breeding ground.

Fishing and Choice of Excursions

The list of what you’ve caught is likely getting long by now!

When you’re ready for a break from fishing, you can choose to go hiking or canoeing to search for wildlife. The Canopy Experience ropes course and a visit to a native village are also unique experiences you can enjoy.

Fish Upriver

Today you’ll travel 15 km upriver to the Amazon Research Center. This lodge is so far away from any native village or lodge that you’ll have no one competing with you for fish!

You’ll spend your time here fishing in surrounding lakes and rivers. You’ll also have a full day to explore the islands near the mouth of the Tahuayo, where you can bird watch for sandpipers, herons, skimmers, and plovers.

Trail Hikes and Monkeys

There’s so much to do around this lodge, we recommend planning a few new excursions with your guide in between casts.

Try exploring the many surrounding trails and help photograph the saki monkeys for a current conservation project. After dinner, relax for the evening and enjoy the sunset.

Last Day of Fishing in Paraiso

It’s your last day in this area, so make sure you plan to fish any last spots or take any last excursions you’d like with your guide.

You won’t want to leave the idyllic Amazon tomorrow, so savour every second today. In the evening, you can head out to look for nocturnal species along the riverbanks.

Final Fishing Trip and Return to Iquitos

Before breakfast, enjoy the final fishing trip of your Amazon adventure! You’re certainly going to have some catches to brag about back home by now.

You’ll return to the main lodge for lunch and then take the boat back to Iquitos. Your transfer will bring you to a hotel of your choice or the airport in Iquitos. Safe travels from here!

amazon rainforest fishing trips

Deep in the Amazon Rainforest, a Bucket List Trip With a Thoughtful Mission

T HE FANTASY VERSION of the Amazon that often seduces travelers—of a pristine, impenetrably vast jungle populated by jaguars, sloths and isolated pockets of indigenous tribes—does not prepare one for Manaus. A sprawling metropolis of more than two million people in the middle of the rainforest, the city is Brazil’s pre-eminent free-trade zone and home to multinational corporations like Foxconn and Samsung.

A superb vantage point for people watching is a window seat at Caxiri, a restaurant overlooking Teatro Amazonas, a Belle Epoque opera house that opened in 1896. Back then, legend has it, Manaus was awash in so much wealth that some rubber barons shipped their clothes to Europe to be laundered. Today, the crowd at Caxiri is a frothy mix of the Amazon basin’s modern power brokers: deal-making executives, government officials, NGO leaders, activists and tour operators, all trying to protect or exploit the area’s resources.

Caxiri—where starters include crispy fried piranha, fangs still bared—is the brainchild of Débora Shornik, 47, a chef who has been cooking in the region for more than a decade. “I came here to discover the Amazon,” Shornik says. “I wanted to learn something different. Here I found fruits, vegetables and fish like nowhere else I’d ever been. I also met mentors, mostly home cooks, who taught me how to use these ingredients, all of which were new to me.”

Shornik was lured back here from São Paulo by her business partner, Ruy Carlos Tone, 56, a civil engineer and entrepreneur who renovated the mansion that houses Caxiri. Tone first toured this region of the Amazon as a sightseer in 2004 and enjoyed the trip so much, he pitched the tour boat’s captain on joining forces in a venture that offers small-group expeditions.

The buzzing lunchtime crowd at Caxiri is in some ways a microcosm of Brazil’s conflicting agendas over the future of the Amazon. Some see the rainforest as a vast resource that a developing nation must tap into; others believe protecting its ecosystem at all costs is the planet’s last, great hope for staving off a climate catastrophe. Though recent trends point to a reduction in deforestation in the first half of 2023, threats to the Amazon are rife: cattle ranching, farming, logging and mining cleared 9 percent of its forest cover in the first two decades of the 21st century. Climate change has brought drought so severe that, last fall, water in the Rio Negro near Manaus fell to its lowest level in more than a century.

Tone’s quest is to take visitors to the farther reaches of the rainforest so they can see with their own eyes what’s at stake and meet the riverine communities that have called the region home for more than a century. He will take me down the Rio Negro to see the riverside lodge he built in 2014 and to visit the site of his latest project, pending construction, a property deep in the jungle.

“Before the pandemic, people from Manaus would rather fly to Miami for a vacation than drive three hours to my jungle lodge,” he says. “Today, they’re learning about what is here—and why we need to protect this place.”

On the way out of the city we cut through Manaus’s bustling market on the banks of the Rio Negro, where açaí berries sit alongside lesser-known fruits like the bright, bitter tucuma, and where freshly caught pirarucu, a massive species of river fish, are hacked down for sale or dried and preserved. Decks of enormous ships overflow with passengers, many lounging in hammocks hung for the long journey upriver into the rainforests toward Colombia, or downriver to Belém, a busy port city near Brazil’s Atlantic coast.

Tone was born to Brazilian-Japanese parents in São Paulo (Brazil is home to the largest Japanese community outside Japan). As a child he dreamed of adventure, but before he could see the world his father died unexpectedly. With four younger sisters to support, he took over the family’s small civil-engineering concern and eventually grew it into a large, profitable enterprise.

After a dozen or so years, Tone decided to scratch his travel itch another way. His expedition company, Katerre, is now run out of an office on the grounds of his riverside lodge, Mirante do Gavião, located in the Novo Airão municipality. While many of the area’s lodges resemble summer camps or research stations, Mirante’s modernist architecture evokes the wooden vessels that ply the Amazon.

Tone introduces me to Paul Clark, a Scotsman, and Bianca Bencivenni, an Italian, who co-founded a school in Jauaperi, an area along a remote tributary of the Rio Negro. The couple have lived in the region for nearly three decades, and Tone is their main backer. Clark explains that parts of the Amazon have for decades been under severe pressure from overfishing, cattle farming, poaching of endangered animals and other extractive enterprises. “When we first moved here and my daughter was born, about 26 years ago, there were over 50 kinds of fish we caught and ate regularly,” he says. By the time his son arrived, eight years later, the number of edible species had dwindled by half.

Clark helped organize a local movement that lobbied for a law prohibiting commercial fishing and later succeeded in designating Jauaperi a federally protected reserve. He and his neighbors also worked to restore a turtle population that had nearly disappeared from illegal consumption. Clark slept on the beach during egg-hatching season and confronted armed poachers in a nonviolent way, saying, “Is it really worth killing me just to get a turtle egg?”

Our journey down the Rio Negro, which runs more or less parallel to and a few hundred miles north of the Amazon River, is taken aboard an eight-cabin boat piloted by Tone’s business partner, Oziel Rodrigues. “People imagine the Amazon to be uninhabited, like a national park or a nature preserve,” Tone says as we drift past settlements. “But there are small communities all along the river, people who have been here for a very long time.” Protection of these areas was neglected during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, from 2019 to 2022. The administration cut funding for park rangers and other enforcement agents, allowing commercial fishing and cattle ranching to expand, largely unchecked, even in regions where such activities were outlawed. “One of my goals,” Tone says, “is to find ways to help these people, through education, through employment, so that they don’t turn to poaching or illegal fishing to survive.”

Most people living in the riverside communities of Amazonas refer to themselves as caboclos, a word akin to mestizo, signifying a mix of indigenous and settler heritage (typically Portuguese). Though it was once considered a derogatory term in Brazil, today many locals are embracing and celebrating their caboclo identity.

Leaving the big boat, we venture farther into the forest on powerboats that accommodate three or four people, or smaller wooden canoes. At this time of the year, toward the end of the rainy season, the water level is so high that, in many places, only the tips of trees are visible, and the jungle becomes known as the flooded forest.

Navigating by canoe involves paddling around treetops—venturing into narrow channels so densely packed with vegetation, the midday equatorial sun is nearly eclipsed.

At dusk we spot a flock of bright-green macaws, then a pair of toucans streaking across the sky. Our guide points to a sloth dozing in some high branches. The Rio Negro offers a distinct advantage over other waterways: The remains of long-decayed trees make the water highly acidic, deterring mosquitoes. While the Amazon River is rife with insects and traversed by cruise ships, here we eat outdoors in short sleeves and pass only an occasional local boat after leaving town in Novo Airão.

Tone has been telling me about his progression as a travel entrepreneur, starting with Katerre Expeditions, then Mirante do Gavião lodge, which offers day trips. Now he’s developing much longer voyages of around two weeks aboard a new vessel, La Jangada, “where we take visitors deeper into nature, and into the way of life of people who live on the river.”

The remote setting of his newest project, Madada lodge—about three hours by boat upriver from Novo Airão—will include spaces that front the forest canopy. Its biomimetic design is based on a structure that debuted at the 2021 Venice Biennale, in which the architecture is patterned after the surrounding flora. “Because of its location and these new kinds of structures, the idea is that you are completely immersed in the forest at the lodge,” Tone says.

On my last day in the Amazon, we visit Biatüwi, a restaurant that Tone and Shornik helped launch in a colonial-era neighborhood of Manaus. Chef-owner Clarinda Maria Ramos, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology while running the restaurant, is a member of the Sateré-Mawé, an indigenous group from the border area between Amazonas and Pará; her husband, anthropologist João Paulo Lima Barreto, who hails from the Tukanos of Rio Tiquié, in the upper Rio Negro system, runs an adjacent center for indigenous medicine. Biatüwi’s menu is drawn from both traditions and features an intensely sour, peppery fish soup served with an optional side: your choice of two varieties of jungle ant, one of which bears the distinct flavor of lemongrass.

“We are proud to be the first indigenous people selling our own food, in our own place,” Ramos says. “This is what we make at home. It’s not a formal meal. It’s restorative, healthful, natural—it’s what we serve to make people feel good.”
