Staying in an Airbnb can be more convenient and affordable than renting a hotel room. And now, Airbnb offers travel insurance for guests in certain regions. Travel insurance can offer valuable financial protection if you need to cancel a prepaid trip for a covered reason.

Before you book a short-term rental through Airbnb, you should review and understand the available insurance options. Here’s what you need to know about Airbnb insurance, including what’s covered, what’s not covered, and how to file a claim.

Airbnb travel insurance explained

Airbnb travel insurance is an optional policy that you can purchase when booking a short-term rental. If you need to cancel your Airbnb booking for a covered reason, your insurer will reimburse you for up to 100% of your non-refundable reservation costs. It also provides coverage for things like travel delays and medical emergencies.

Airbnb travel insurance is currently available for customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and some European countries, including Austria, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. [1]

The cost of Airbnb travel insurance is a percentage of your total reservation cost. When you book your stay, you’ll have the option to add travel insurance to your reservation. The cost is added to the total reservation cost as a line item, and you pay for the policy when you check out online.

AirCover vs. Airbnb travel insurance

Every Airbnb booking includes AirCover, which covers things like last-minute booking cancellations by the host and problems during check-in. There’s also a 24/7 safety line that Airbnb guests can call if they feel unsafe. [2]

In addition, AirCover provides certain protections for hosts, like guest identity verification, $3 million in property damage protection, liability insurance, and loss of income insurance.

AirCover and Airbnb travel insurance are different products. AirCover is free with all bookings and covers significant issues that arise with a booking, like inaccurate listings or missing amenities.

On the other hand, Airbnb travel insurance is optional, and you can add it to your reservation for an additional cost. Unlike AirCover, Airbnb travel insurance will refund you for prepaid booking expenses if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, like flight delays or illness.

What Airbnb travel insurance covers

Airbnb travel insurance provides coverage for many unforeseen situations that can arise during travel. Here are some of the things an optional Airbnb travel insurance policy covers. [3]

Trip cancellation

If you need to cancel your Airbnb reservation for a covered reason, you can file a claim and get refunded for up to 100% of your prepaid and non-refundable costs. Covered reasons include illness and injury, flight cancellations and delays, and government mandates for evacuations due to a natural disaster or other inclement weather events.

Travel delays

This part of the policy will reimburse you for additional expenses if your trip gets delayed by more than 12 hours for a covered reason. Some covered situations include delayed flights, bad weather, and stolen passports and travel documents.

Medical emergencies

If you get sick or injured during your trip, an Airbnb travel insurance plan will reimburse you for medical costs, including prescription medication, emergency transportation in an ambulance, and hospital bills.

Delayed baggage

Guest travel insurance from Airbnb will reimburse you for lost, damaged, or stolen baggage. In addition, this policy will cover damaged travel documents and unauthorized credit card transactions that occur while traveling.

24/7 emergency and travel assistance

Airbnb offers 24/7 assistance while you’re traveling. Whether you experience a medical emergency and need to go to the nearest hospital or have questions about booking restaurants on your trip, a representative from Airbnb can provide the appropriate assistance, day or night.

What Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t cover

Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t cover everything, so it’s important to read your policy’s fine print before purchasing coverage. You’ll have the option to review the terms of Airbnb’s travel insurance contract before you add it to your reservation.

For example, for bookings made on or after May 31, 2022, having COVID-19 is no longer considered an extenuating circumstance that would allow you to cancel your trip for a refund.

There are also some location-specific restrictions. For UK travelers, Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t cover the cost of travel to and from your Airbnb listing, such as trains and ferries. It also won’t cover treatment for pre-existing medical conditions. [3]

How do you file an Airbnb travel insurance claim?

The insurance company that underwrites the policy handles Airbnb’s travel insurance claims. For U.S. residents, the underwriter is Generali. For UK and EU residents, the underwriter is Europ Assistance. [3]

You can initiate the claim process by visiting the coverage overview page on the Airbnb website and selecting “Start a Claim.” You can also contact the insurance company that underwrites your policy directly to start a new claim. [3]

Airbnb travel insurance FAQs

Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about Airbnb travel insurance.

How do you add Airbnb travel insurance to your booking?

When you reserve an Airbnb, you’ll have the option to add travel insurance to your reservation before you check out. The travel insurance premium will already be generated, so you can simply check the box to add the insurance policy to your total reservation cost.

Does Airbnb travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t cover COVID-19. If you test positive for COVID-19 and need to cancel your trip, the Airbnb host’s cancellation policy will apply. Additionally, Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t cover unexpected travel disruptions due to COVID-19, like quarantine mandates or border closures.

Are hosts covered by Airbnb travel insurance?

Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t provide any protection for hosts or their Airbnb property. However, AirCover, which is included for free in every booking, does provide protections for Airbnb hosts, such as damage to their rental property.

Should you get insurance for Airbnb?

Airbnb travel insurance can be beneficial if you’re spending a lot of money on non-refundable bookings or want to ensure coverage for unexpected issues, like travel delays and lost baggage. However, if you’re driving a short distance to stay in a vacation rental for the weekend, this policy may not be worth the added cost.

New insurance product and COVID relief program to support guests

Key Takeaways

  • Airbnb is set to launch guest insurance and a $20 million Guest COVID Support Program.

Person cleaning hands

Today we’re announcing two new ways Airbnb will support our guest community as they navigate unexpected impacts of the recent surge in COVID cases throughout the world — an upcoming guest travel insurance product and the launch of Airbnb’s Guest COVID Support Program.

Since the WHO’s declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic in March 2020, we’ve continued to prioritize public health. Our guiding principle has been that people should not travel or host if they are sick with this virus.

In this context, we announced the global activation of our Extenuating Circumstances policy in March 2020 enabling guests who booked before the pandemic to get refunds, making Airbnb the first short-term rental platform to implement such a consumer-friendly approach to COVID cancellations. And Airbnb continues to allow guests who contract COVID to cancel for a full refund even if it’s outside of the Host’s cancellation policy. This is something none of our peer short-term rental companies have done.

But over the past month, we’ve seen the stress and challenges spurred by Omicron, and we’ve stayed close to our community, which includes both Hosts and guests. As a two-sided platform, it is important to recognize that the Omicron spike has greatly impacted our Hosts, and we know many lost out on income as well as the opportunity to market their listing over the holiday season following last-minute cancellations. For this reason, we are grateful that our Host community as a whole has sought to offer guests greater flexibility — with almost two thirds of active listings now offering moderate or flexible cancellation policies. And many even went above and beyond their cancellation policies to support guests over the course of this unprecedented Omicron wave that hit over the holiday travel season.

Travelers have been hit hard, particularly with sudden travel restrictions and border shutdowns. We also know that many travelers who may be wary of crowded hotel lobbies during this Omicron spike are increasingly viewing short-term rentals booked through a trusted platform like Airbnb as a safer travel option for family and friends — particularly as Airbnb Hosts remain committed to Airbnb’s COVID safety and cleaning practices .

We understand that our guests are also trying to navigate in a really dynamic environment, so we’ll be stepping up our support for guests in the following ways:

Airbnb Guest Travel Insurance

We will launch a custom-built guest travel insurance product offering exclusive to Airbnb guests. The same team that brought our AirCover Host protection product to life is building our new guest insurance product in partnership with a reputable insurance carrier. We plan to launch this new product in Spring 2022.

Until this new product is available, we urge guests to purchase travel insurance outside of Airbnb, or to utilize the functionality of our free cancellation search filter to find listings that have more flexibility.

Airbnb Guest COVID Support Program

While we work towards the travel insurance launch, we are introducing our new Guest COVID Support Program to provide relief to guests no longer able to proceed with their previously booked reservations due to unexpected travel disruptions caused by government mandates — such as border closures or mandatory extended quarantine requirements.

For guests in these situations who are unable to obtain full refunds under their Hosts’ cancellation policies, Airbnb will provide relief in the form of a travel coupon for 50 percent of the cost of the unrefunded portion of the reservation. We are funding this program with $20 million initially to help defray these financial impacts to our guests and ensure guests know that we are listening to their concerns.

This program is effective immediately, and applies retroactively to reservations that (1) have a check-in date on or after December 1, 2021 and (2) had to be cancelled by the guest due to border closures, government mandates and certain other Omicron-related travel restrictions not in effect at the time of booking. If guests had reservations for stays with check-in dates on or after December 1, and they had to cancel in advance of check-in due to unexpected travel disruptions caused by government mandates, they are eligible for relief under this program.

For example, if a traveler in October booked a stay in Israel with a check-in date for late December — and Israel’s restrictions on outside travel were announced after the date of booking but before the date of check-in —  this program would retroactively apply. However, if a traveler books a stay in Israel today while the same travel restrictions are already in place, the program would not apply.

Guests can find full program details here and should contact our 24/7 Community Support team if they believe their reservations meet the program criteria.

This program is meant to support guests who have encountered extreme and unexpected government-mandated travel disruptions due to Omicron and through no fault of their own. Other circumstances such as a guest testing positive for COVID just prior to a reservation will still be covered by Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy and therefore will not be eligible under this new program. Additionally, extreme travel disruptions such as earthquakes, wildfires, etc. that are not related to COVID are also covered under Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy.

Despite Omicron, this New Year’s Eve nearly 4.5 million guests in 53,000 places around the world put their faith in our Hosts and platform to deliver safe and meaningful experiences. This represented our biggest night since the start of the pandemic.

We will continue to emphasize responsible travel, including communicating updates about our forthcoming guest insurance product ahead of the Spring launch.

Travel insurance can protect you in the event of unforeseen delays or cancellations, but whether you should pay extra for it — or rely on what might already be included in the booking — is a perennial question.

We have some answers for you if you’re wondering, “Is Airbnb insurance worth it?”

Here’s the lowdown on what Airbnb insurance covers and what you’ll be on the hook for if you choose not pay extra for it.

What does travel insurance for an Airbnb rental cover?

This type of travel insurance protects the cost of your Airbnb rental if you encounter unexpected disruptions to your travel before or during your trip.

These policies are underwritten by Generali Global Assistance in the U.S. and Aon and Europ Assistance Group abroad. The insurance coverage is available in nine countries where Airbnb offers rentals and will cover up to 100% of your payment if you cancel for a covered reason.

Examples of covered reasons include a delayed flight that prevents you from arriving at your rental on time or having to cancel the trip because you got sick. Other obstacles might include your bags getting lost en route or a hurricane thwarting your plans. Travel insurance for an Airbnb rental would protect you in these situations.

These are some of the covered protections that come with Airbnb travel insurance:

Trip cancellation for a covered reason.

Flight cancellation due to weather.

Illness or injury.

Trip delay of more than 12 hours.

Loss of baggage.

Natural disasters.

Theft during the stay.

Stolen travel documents.

In the above instances, Airbnb travel insurance would reimburse you the non-refundable cost of the rental. Without insurance, if you had to cancel, you would be subject to the host’s cancellation rules — which could include forfeiting the entire cost of the rental.

Is Airbnb travel insurance worth it?

Since you can’t see into the future, this type of travel insurance can help protect expensive Airbnb rentals if you can’t make your trip as originally planned.

Remember that Airbnb travel insurance only covers the cost of the rental, not any other related expenses like airline tickets, car rentals or transportation to the property.

To determine if Airbnb travel insurance is worth it, it’s important to know what other types of insurance you already have. Do you have any travel protection through your credit card ? If so, that may be more than enough to cover your Airbnb rental, and purchasing an Airbnb travel insurance policy wouldn’t be necessary.

If you want to rely on another form of travel insurance, a comprehensive plan may offer more protection — like covering additional costs associated with travel disruptions — but it can also be more expensive than what Airbnb offers. A good place to check for the best travel insurance for Airbnb is NerdWallet’s list of best travel insurance companies , where you can compare different options.

Don’t I already have this with Airbnb AirCover?

No. AirCover protects renters from issues that are within the host’s control, whereas travel insurance protects the renter from things outside of the host’s control, like flight disruptions or personal illness.

AirCover protects the renter if the rental doesn’t meet the advertised standards or if the host cancels at the last minute. It also covers operational issues like a broken heater or if the number of bedrooms didn’t match the listing.

Essentially, AirCover assures travelers that their rental is what was advertised. If any issues arise, Airbnb will help you find a comparable alternate rental within the same price point. Alternatively, if you’d prefer not to be rebooked, Airbnb may issue a full or partial refund.

How do you get Airbnb travel insurance and how much does it cost?

If you want to add Airbnb travel insurance to your reservation, it’s easy to do during the reservation process through the Airbnb booking platform. The cost will vary and is based on a percentage of the overall trip cost.

Remember, if you use a credit card with ample travel insurance, you might already be protected.

Can you cancel Airbnb travel insurance?

If you need to cancel travel insurance purchased through Airbnb, it’s possible to do so within 10 days of purchase. For residents of Indiana, you can cancel within 30 days of purchase. However, once the trip begins, you can’t cancel it.

» Learn more: How to get an Airbnb discount

Should I get Airbnb travel insurance?

Is Airbnb insurance worth it for guests? Yes and no. It depends on how you purchase your travel.

If you use a credit card with ample protections already, then you may be fine. Otherwise, a travel insurance policy can help you recoup the cost of your rental in the event of a travel disruption.

Ultimately, it will come down to your own personal risk tolerance, but it’s nice to have the option when booking with Airbnb.

Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests | What it is and How it Works

Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests | What it is and How it Works

Airbnb has launched travel insurance for guests. Hinted at during an earnings call in August 2021 and rolled out in mid-2022, Airbnb is certainly not the first online booking platform to offer guests travel insurance. Vrbo has provided its guests in the US with options for travel insurance for years while online travel agent Hopper even extends trip protection to third-party bookings, expanding its range of fintech products while keeping customers on the app.

What is Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance purchased by travelers to cover different types of risks and financial losses that they may incur due to unforeseeable reasons in the course of traveling, domestically and/or internationally. These can range from canceled flights and missing luggage to injuries and illness. Travel insurance is usually priced based on the cost of the trip and the age of the traveler.

Airbnb is now offering travel insurance to guests using its platform that they can purchase when making their booking. The policies are issued through the Generali Group.

Is Airbnb Travel Insurance Available to all Airbnb Guests?

At present, Airbnb travel insurance is available to guests residing in the US, UK and some countries in the European Union. These include Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

Airbnb will roll out the product to guests living in other parts of the world in the future.

Who Provides Airbnb Travel Insurance Policies?

Airbnb’s travel insurance policies are offered through Generali US Branch and Europ Assistance S.A., both of which are subsidiaries of the leading multinational insurer, the Generali Group.

For residents of the US, the travel insurance policy is offered by Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC which is underwritten by Generali US Branch.

For UK residents, the travel insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistance SA.

Europ Assistance SA, acting through its Irish branch, underwrites the travel insurance for EU residents.

What does Airbnb Travel Insurance Cover?

Airbnb travel insurance covers four main areas with differences in the finer details based on location.

1. Trip Cancellation

Travelers can get reimbursed up to 100% of their reservation cost if they cancel for reasons that are covered. Reasons covered include flight delays due to mechanical breakdown, serious injury or illness, and natural disasters at the trip destination or home location.

For example, if a guest has booked to stay in an Airbnb in Florida under the firm cancellation policy which only provides a full refund if they cancel at least 30 days before check-in, cancels the trip due to a hurricane in the state 10 days before they are set to arrive. The cancellation policy dictates that the host refunds 50% of the booking, leaving the guest at a loss for 50% of what they paid for accommodation. However, because Airbnb travel insurance covers natural disasters like hurricanes, the guest will receive the remaining 50% as an insurance payout.

2. Travel Delay

If the trip is delayed for at least 12 hours due to an unforeseeable circumstance such as mechanical breakdown of the guest’s vehicle; a storm, fire, or flood at the point of departure; or loss of travel documents or money, Airbnb travel insurance will reimburse the insured traveler for certain additional expenses incurred as a result.

3. Medical Assistance

Insured Airbnb guests can also get reimbursed for medical expenses they incur while traveling abroad. These include costs of medication prescribed by a doctor, ambulance journeys ordered by a doctor, and hospitalization.

Insured travelers are reimbursed for luggage that has been definitively lost or damaged by the carrier.

Airbnb travel insurance also includes emergency and travel assistance services available 24/7 as well as other perks.

What does Airbnb Travel Insurance Not Cover?

The specifics of how coverage is defined and thus what is not covered is dependent on the country of residence of the Airbnb traveler. For example, UK residents are not covered for travel costs such as flights, trains, and ferries as well as pre-existing medical conditions.

Policy details relevant to each country including areas of coverage and key exclusions are provided at the booking window where guests can choose to purchase Airbnb travel insurance or not.

How is Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests Different from Airbnb AirCover for Guests?

While Airbnb AirCover for hosts had existed previously, albeit under a different name, Airbnb introduced AirCover for guests as part of its 2022 Summer Release . It is an entirely different product from Airbnb travel insurance.

Airbnb AirCover is provided to all Airbnb guests, for free, while Airbnb travel insurance is a paid product that guests can choose to purchase.

Airbnb AirCover is a set of protections while Airbnb travel insurance is an actual insurance product.

Airbnb AirCover covers issues that occur during the stay at the host’s Airbnb vacation rental while Airbnb travel insurance covers issues outside the host’s control, such as trip delays, natural disasters, and guests falling sick.

Airbnb AirCover protections are paid for by hosts while Airbnb travel insurance is paid for by the insurance company underwriting the policy. There is zero host involvement.

Airbnb AirCover is made available to all travelers who book through Airbnb while only residents of the US, UK, and some EU countries are provided with the option to purchase Airbnb travel insurance.

How Much Does Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests Cost?

Airbnb travel insurance doesn’t have a fixed price. It is dependent on the total cost of the trip and the location of residence from which the guest is making their booking. Generally, the travel insurance premium is a percentage of the total trip cost.

The cost will be shown as a line item at checkout.

How to Add Airbnb Travel Insurance to Your Booking?

Eligible Airbnb users are provided the option of adding travel insurance during booking.

On the checkout page, guests can opt to purchase Airbnb’s travel insurance product.

The details of the insurance plan available to them including key areas of coverage and exclusions can be viewed on dedicated screens.

Guests simply add travel insurance to the booking before checkout.

Once the reservation is confirmed, the guest will receive an email confirming the purchase of travel insurance and include a copy of the insurance policy. The email will also include a link to their insurance coverage overview page where they can cancel the plan, start a claim, etc.

How to Cancel your Airbnb Travel Insurance?

Airbnb travel insurance can be canceled on the coverage overview page by selecting Cancel policy . The link to the page is sent in the email confirming purchase of the travel insurance.

Guests can cancel their policy within a set number of days of purchase to obtain a full premium refund.

Airbnb guests residing in the US with the exception of Indiana can cancel their policy within 10 days of purchase. Indiana residents can cancel within 30 days of purchase.

UK and EU residents can cancel within 14 days of purchase.

Guests cannot cancel their policy after they have started their trip or started their claim even if they are within the cancellation period.

How to File a Claim for Airbnb Travel Insurance?

Travelers who have purchased Airbnb travel insurance can start a claim by selecting Start a claim on their coverage overview page. The link to the page is sent in the email confirming purchase of the travel insurance.

Claims can also be started by directly contacting the insurer relevant to each country. Therefore, US residents can contact Generali directly while UK and EU residents can contact Europ Assistance directly.

How to get Customer Support for Airbnb Travel Insurance?

For questions about the plan, claiming process or to request for travel assistance, guests can contact customer support.

US residents can contact Generali customer support by calling (866) 757-0010 or emailing [email protected] . For medical and travel emergencies, they can call (877) 243-4135.

UK residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +44 203 7888 656 or emailing [email protected] .

Austria residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +43 120 609 2205 or emailing [email protected] .

Germany residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +49 302 238 4619 or emailing [email protected] .

Ireland residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +353 15 41 07 39 or emailing [email protected] .

Italy residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +39 02 23 33 14 35 or emailing [email protected] .

Netherlands residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +31 207003745 or emailing [email protected] . For travel assistance they can call +32 2 541 9011.

Portugal residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +34 915 368 419 or emailing [email protected] .

Spain residents can contact Europ Assistance by calling +34 915 143 721 or emailing [email protected] .

What if You are Not Eligible for Airbnb Travel Insurance?

There is an assortment of travel insurance products available to all types of travelers everywhere. So if you are not a resident of the US, UK, or eligible EU country and booking through Airbnb, you can still purchase travel insurance directly from an insurance provider or agent. Make sure to read reviews and check comparison sites to ensure you are getting the best value for your spend.

How Does Airbnb AirCover Work with Airbnb Travel Insurance?

Airbnb’s AirCover for guests and travel insurance are two different but complementary products that work well together. For example, if a guest arrives at their destination only to find the host has canceled the reservation at the last minute. Meanwhile, they are informed at the airport that their baggage is missing. While AirCover will help the guest find a new place to stay at no extra cost, they can file an insurance claim to get reimbursed for their missing baggage.

Airbnb travel insurance is more than just a step in creating new revenue streams. It is also a means of providing added convenience to users inclined to purchase travel insurance while keeping them inside the Airbnb platform instead of roaming elsewhere in search of travel products. Providing the option can also encourage guests who may not usually opt for travel insurance to do so while deflecting blame away from Airbnb during instances such as Hurricane Ian of 2022 which left guests at the mercy of hosts being able to afford or willing to refund their guests for missed travel plans.

At present, the product is considered to provide decent coverage for a reasonable price though it is yet to provide fuller coverage such as cancellations for any reasons or full travel costs as provided by more exciting products available on the market.

As you plan your next adventure or prepare to host travelers, exploring the details of Airbnb travel insurance can help you navigate the intricacies of travel protection and ensure that you’re equipped to handle unforeseen events with resilience and financial security.

Coverage for Trip Cancellation

One of the key provisions of Airbnb travel insurance is coverage for trip cancellation. This aspect of the insurance offers protection in the event that you need to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Whether it’s a sudden illness, a family emergency, or other unexpected events, trip cancellation coverage can provide financial reimbursement for non-refundable trip expenses, such as accommodation costs and transportation fees.

When faced with a situation that forces you to cancel your travel plans, having trip cancellation coverage can alleviate the financial burden and offer peace of mind, knowing that you won’t incur significant losses from prepaid expenses. It’s important to review the specific terms and conditions of the coverage, as certain circumstances may be eligible for reimbursement while others may not be covered.

For example, if you or a family member falls ill before your scheduled trip and you need to cancel your reservation, Airbnb travel insurance can step in to provide compensation for the non-refundable costs associated with your stay. Similarly, unexpected events such as natural disasters or travel advisories may also trigger trip cancellation coverage, offering a safety net in uncertain situations.

By understanding the nuances of trip cancellation coverage within Airbnb travel insurance, you can make informed decisions when planning your trip and ensure that you’re prepared for unforeseen events that may necessitate the cancellation of your travel arrangements. This aspect of the insurance serves as a valuable safeguard, offering financial protection and support during challenging times, allowing you to navigate unexpected circumstances with greater resilience and peace of mind.

Coverage for Trip Interruption

Alongside trip cancellation coverage, Airbnb travel insurance includes provisions for trip interruption, offering protection in the event that your trip is unexpectedly cut short due to unforeseen circumstances. Trip interruption coverage serves as a valuable safeguard, providing financial reimbursement for additional expenses incurred as a result of having to return home earlier than planned.

Unforeseen events such as a family emergency, a sudden illness, or other unexpected situations may necessitate the interruption of your trip. In such cases, trip interruption coverage can step in to mitigate the financial impact by offering compensation for the unused portion of your pre-paid expenses, as well as any additional expenses incurred while returning home.

For example, if a family member falls ill during your trip and you need to return home earlier than planned, trip interruption coverage can provide reimbursement for the unused portion of your accommodation costs, transportation expenses, and other non-refundable arrangements. This ensures that you’re not financially burdened by the unexpected need to cut your trip short, offering support and assistance during challenging times.

By being aware of the protection offered by this aspect of the insurance, you can make informed decisions and navigate unexpected circumstances with resilience, ensuring that your travel experience is safeguarded against the impact of unexpected events.

Coverage for Medical Emergencies

Furthermore, the coverage for medical emergencies may extend to include emergency medical evacuation, ensuring that you can be transported to the nearest appropriate medical facility if the situation requires specialized care that is not available locally. Whether you’re exploring a new destination or embarking on an adventure, having this coverage in place ensures that you can prioritize your well-being without being unduly concerned about the potential financial impact of medical emergencies.

Coverage for Lost or Delayed Luggage

One of the common concerns for travelers is the possibility of lost or delayed luggage, which can disrupt travel plans and cause inconvenience. Airbnb travel insurance addresses this concern by providing coverage for lost or delayed luggage, offering financial compensation and support in the event that your belongings are misplaced or delayed during your trip.

In the unfortunate event that your luggage is lost by the airline or transportation provider, the coverage for lost luggage within Airbnb travel insurance can offer reimbursement for the value of your belongings, helping mitigate the financial impact of the loss. Similarly, if your luggage is delayed and you incur additional expenses for essential items such as clothing and toiletries, the insurance can provide compensation for these out-of-pocket costs.

Having coverage for lost or delayed luggage offers peace of mind, knowing that you’re financially protected in the event of such travel disruptions. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, having this safeguard in place ensures that you can navigate the inconvenience of lost or delayed luggage without bearing the full financial burden.

In the unfortunate event of property damage caused by a guest, the coverage within Airbnb travel insurance can provide compensation for the repair or replacement of the damaged property, ensuring that hosts are not unduly burdened by the financial impact of such incidents. Airbnb Travel Insurance for Guests: Cost, details, limitations, differences with Aircover

  • June 7, 2022

airbnb guest travel insurance (1)

For local inhabitants and businesses, the disaster is also economic. Florida is a big travel market. With great beaches and world-famous attractions such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, the state attracts many families who book a vacation rental for their stay. Cities like Orlando and Kissimmee usually rank high in market size for vacation rental revenues.

Airbnb is rolling out its guest travel insurance in the US, the UK, and 8 countries of the European Union . The company had been working on it for at least two years. Unlike its Aircover for guests program, which is free, this travel insurance is a paid product . Travelers can purchase it while completing their booking. Big insurance company names are behind the insurance program (e.g. Europ Assistance, Generali, AON). Let’s discover what Airbnb’s travel insurance exactly covers, when it can be used, and wha t impact it can have on existing host cancelation policies . We’ll also see why it is difficult to roll out a travel insurance offering globally.

Airbnb is not the first vacation rental listing platform to be offering travel insurance to its guests. Vrbo has been selling travel insurance products in the US created by Generali (formerly CSA Travel Protection) for years. At a time when online travel agents like Hopper are promising incremental revenues from FinTech products to their investors, it is also good for Airbnb to announce a way to make money on insurance products, after giving away host insurance liability for free, for instance.

Where is Airbnb’s travel insurance available?

Airbnb is launching its guest travel insurance in the following countries:

  • the Netherlands,
  • Austria,

Airbnb is planning on making its travel insurance available to guests in other countries in the future. Our guess is that Airbnb will then go after other markets in the European Union, such as France, as it already has set some insurance operations within the EU. Then, other countries with similar insurance industry setups such as Australia come could.

Rolling out insurance is really a matter of going at it country by country and even state by state in the US. Insurance regulations are very strong and differ from one country to another in the EU and one state to another in the US.

For countries in South America, parts of Asia, and Africa, things will probably take more time.

airbnb guest travel insurance

What does the Airbnb travel insurance cover and when can a guest make a claim? Disover this trip cancellation insurance which does not infringe existing host cancellation policies.

What the airbnb travel covers, for instance, in the us:.

In the US, the Airbnb travel insurance is powered by the Generali insurance company. The plan includes:

  • Trip cancellation:  Get reimbursed for up to 100% of your non-refunded Airbnb reservation cost if you cancel for a covered reason, such as: iIllness or injury, flight cancellations and delays due to weather, or mandatory evacuations due to weather.
  • Travel delay:  Get reimbursed for certain additional expenses you incur because your trip is delayed for 12 hours or more for a covered reason, such as: flight delays, passport theft, or adverse weather.
  • Medical:  Get reimbursed for doctor-ordered medical services during your trip, such as: hospital services, ambulance services, and prescription medicines.
  • Baggage:  Get reimbursed for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, lost, stolen, or damaged travel documents, and unauthorized use of credit cards during your trip.

The plan also comes with other coverages and perks, like 24/7 emergency and travel assistance services. With just a phone call, you can get help with anything from a medical referral to a restaurant recommendation.

What does the Airbnb travel insurance mean for a host?

Airbnb’s travel insurance for guests promises a payment for up to 100% of their non-refunded Airbnb reservation costs if their trip is impacted by specific events, such as

  • bad weather,
  • stolen travel documents,
  • or serious illness.

Airbnb’s travel insurance is more like a trip cancellation insurance that works under certain conditions than a cancel-for-any reason insurance product.

Basically, if a traveler has to cancel their trip:

  • The existing host cancellation policy will apply.
  • Let’s take the example of a booking made under the Airbnb Strict cancellation policy . It allows guests to receive a full refund if they cancel within 48 hours of booking and at least 14 days before a listing’s check-in time. In the event of a cancellation within 48 hours, the guest is only entitled to a 50% refund, regardless of how far out the check-in date is. S o, the host only pays back 50% of the Airbnb reservation cost.
  • Now, if specific events listed and covered by the Airbnb travel insurance occur, then travel insurance can refund up to the remaining 50% .
  • Note that, unlike with Aircover, the insurance provider will not seek to recover any money from the Host if a guest files a travel insurance claim

What exactly is the “Airbnb booking cost” that is covered?

To our understanding, the Airbnb booking cost is what the guest pays to the host. It may or may not include Airbnb’s service fee. Depending on the existing host cancellation policy, the travel insurance will pay the guest the part of the booking cost that the host got to keep as per the cancellation policy.

For example, if the Host refunds 50% of the Airbnb reservation cost based on their cancellation policy, travel insurance can refund up to the remaining 50% if the guest cancels for a covered reason.

How about COVID-19?

At Airbnb, for any booking made on or after May 31, 2022, being sick with COVID-19 will no longer be considered an extenuating circumstance. This is also the case on most online travel platforms such as Booking.com and Vrbo?

According to Airbnb, its guest travel insurance “could” cover costs related to COVID as it can cover “serious illness”: “If a guest purchases travel insurance, they could be covered should they become sick with COVID-19 (as diagnosed by a licensed doctor) and other policy terms are met. So, it may depend on where the guest booking is from, among other things.

If they are worried about having to cancel a trip due to COVID-related reasons,  Airbnb recommends travelers buy travel insurance. So, it would make sense that Airbnb started selling such an insurance product to its guests.

airbnb guest travel insurance

How can you buy guest travel insurance on Airbnb?

Guests get the option to purchase travel insurance during the booking process. The Airbnb guest travel insurance cannot be bought separately or after the booking has been made.

  • During booking, guests are given the option to add travel insurance.
  • Dedicated screens provide details about what the policy covers and key exclusions.
  • If they’re interested, guests simply add travel insurance to their booking and check out.
  • The guest’s travel insurance premium is a percentage of their total trip cost and will appear as a line item at checkout.
  • After completing their reservation, guests who added travel insurance will receive an email confirmation with their policy’s details and information about how to file a claim

Is it free or paid?

The Airbnb travel insurance is not free, can be purchased at booking time and covers up to 100% of Airbnb booking cost

How much does the Airbnb guest travel insurance cost?

The cost of Airbnb’s travel insurance is not a fixed cost. It varies according to the total trip cost (as well as the location of the guest making the booking). The guest’s travel insurance premium is a percentage of their total trip cost and will appear as a line item at checkout.

What are the differences between Aircover for guests (free) vs Airbnb travel insurance (paid)?

So here are the main differences with Aircover for guests:

  • Aircover for guests is free, while Airbnb’s travel insurance is a paid product.
  • Aircover relies on a set of processes that force hosts to pay back guests in case of major issues (e.g. impossible to check-in, a major listing feature missing such as air conditioning)
  • Airbnb’s travel insurance is underwritten by large insurance companies such as Generali.
  • Aircover for guests is triggered when things do not go well due to issues on the host side, while the guest travel insurance covers trip cancellations due to bad weather or the guest falling sick.
  • While Aircover for guests often gets down to hosts refunding money to guests, Airbnb’s travel insurance is money paid by the insurance company to the guests (no money is retrieved from the host on top of the existing host cancellation policy).

Aircover for guests is a set of protections that rely on hosts refunding money. It is no insurance, unlike the guest travel insurance product being introduced

Du ring its Summer 2022 Release event , Airbnb announced a program called “Aircover” which offers new booking protections for guests, for free. These are protections, not insurance. Basically, they rely on Airbnb’s ability to get money back from the host to the guest in case of a substantial breach in what the guest was expecting (e.g. Air conditioning or a swimming pool were listed by the host but they are not actually available at the property).

The protections offered to guests through Airbnb’s Aircover are presented as unique and ground-breaking. Yet, they look like a nice repackaging of existing services that companies such as Booking.com have been offering for years (e.g., helping find a place for the guest should the host cancel). Now, better packaging protections, giving them a name (Aircover), and merchandising them well on the website (Aircover is mentioned high on every listing page) make up good product marketing work. If competitors have been doing the same but have done a bad job at saying so, travelers will indeed have the impression that what Airbnb is offering for free is new and superior in terms of booking protections.

On the guest side, Aircover is no insurance product. It is more the sum of a series of policies and procedures imposed on the host, especially the recently updated and much-contested rebooking and refunding policy.

Aircover is about guaranteeing that Airbnb will either find a new place or refund the guest (e.g., Check-In Guarantee: If a guest can’t check in to a place and the host isn’t able to resolve the issue, Airbnb will find the guest a similar or better home for the length of their original stay at Airbnb’s expense, or we’ll refund them.

To deliver on its promises to guests, Airbnb needed to set the equivalent expectations upon hosts . This is why the company had previously informed its hosts that it was updating its Rebooking and Refund Policy . For instance, it has made it plain and clear to hosts that they may have to refund guests should the host cancel a booking or the guest find that something crucial promised in the listing was actually missing from the property. You will notice that this is the exact mirror of the protections offered to guests, and it makes sense: The money refunded to guests through Aircover actually comes from hosts having to refund them according to the updated rebooking and refund policy.

Why did Airbnb make its travel insurance a paid product, while Aircover for guests and Aircover for hosts are free?

If Airbnb were to offer free travel insurance, it would also have to pay an insurance premium to a professional insurer . Given the volume of Airbnb bookings, it would represent a lot of money and would dent Airbnb’s profitability.

First, Airbnb would not need to cover all its guests, as some already have their travel insurance. Also, unless a reservation is non-refundable, a guest may have a chance to get their money back by canceling their booking or asking their host for some flexibility. Hosts may not like to hear it, but, in a way, flexible cancellation policies are a form of travel insurance for guests.

Second, Airbnb seems to see travel insurance as a money-maker. After all, Vrbo has been flogging insurance products to guests and owners for years, probably making a lot of money from its insurance provider Generali.

  • In August 2021, during a quarterly earnings call, a financial analyst asked Airbnb leaders whether the take rate, currently at 15% on average, would increase in the future. The answers were quite interesting.
  • First, Airbnb mentioned, “opportunities (such as) guest travel insurance”. So, the take rate could increase from commissions on travel insurance that Airbnb would sell to guests.

Another reason why it could be a paid product for guests is Hopper’s success at selling its “cancel any time” and “price freeze” guarantees. It shows that consumers are ok to pay for an added service. Airbnb’s shareholders may be happy to hear that the company is trying to increase its margins, as Hopper is doing. With the launch of Hopper Homes, the competition between the two companies is increasing.

What’s the impact of Airbnb’s travel insurance on existing host cancellation policies?

There is no impact on a host’s cancellation polic y. If a guest cancels, they forfeit whatever money was due under the cancellation policy they had signed up for. The host gets to keep the deposit.

What the travel insurance brings about is that the guest can ask the insurance company to refund the money that the host has kept for themselves (as per the existing cancellation policy).

So, Airbnb has found a way to enforce host policies, while allowing guests to lower their risk through travel insurance. According to the company, if travelers who buy a policy cancel their booking for a covered reason, they’ll be able to file a claim to seek reimbursement for up to 100% of their non-refunded Airbnb booking cost. This may reduce the possibility of guests asking Hosts for a refund outside the terms of their Hosts’ cancellation policies.

The challenges of offering an insurance product on a global basis

When Airbnb first revealed that its $1,000,000 Host Guarantee had gone global ten years ago, the industry wondered how Airbnb had pulled it off. How can they have created and launched such an insurance product globally? The answer was that the company could, as this was no insurance. This was a guarantee, built on processes and tools such as the Resolution Center . In some iffy cases, Airbnb was probably also ready to spend some money of its own the solve the issue. So, no need to care about local insurance regulations across 130+ countries. No insurance, just a guarantee.

It is somewhat easier to roll out a liability insurance program for hosts ( as Booking.com just did ), as the risk is a bit more standard and as insurance companies have some existing products that can be used. This is why Aircover for Hosts has a real liability insurance product, while, on the damage protection side, Airbnb is still relying on the Resolution Center.

The Airbnb Guest Travel Insurance has been in the works for almost two years!

  • On March 30, 2020, during an emergency live stream held with Airbnb hosts in the thick of the COVID crisis, B rian Chesky announced that the company was working on travel insurance ,
  • In 2021, Airbnb discreetly launched its Travel Insurance page and started recommending guests purchased a travel insurance product at the end of its booking process. Airbnb here was merely redirecting travelers to third-party websites, such as the travel insurance aggregator InsureMyTrip in the US and insurance company Europ Assistance (part of the Generali Group) in Europe,
  • In August 2021, during a quarterly earnings call, Airbnb mentioned working on opportunities such as  “guest travel insurance”,
  • On January 2, Brian Chesky confirmed in a tweet that the company was working on guest travel insurance

Who are the insurance companies behind Airbnb’s travel insurance?

It is always hard to pull off global coverage, as insurance is really more like a series of national businesses due to local regulations . Airbnb had to create subsidiaries that deal with insurance on local or regional levels, such as Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC in the US and Airbnb UK Services Limited in the UK.

Two partners with Aon + Europ Assistance Group (and its U.S. subsidiary, Generali Global Assistance), to introduce travel insurance for guests. Both AO

  • For guests in the U.S., the travel insurance plan is offered by Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC , which is licensed as an insurance agency in all states of the U.S. and the District of Columbia, and underwritten by Generali US Branch of New York, N.Y.
  • For guests in the U.K., travel insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistanc e SA. Travel insurance is arranged by Airbnb UK Services Limited . Airbnb UK Services Limited is an appointed representative of Aon UK Limited
  • For guests in the EU, travel insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistance S.A., acting through its Irish Branch

Airbnb has been working on its guest travel insurance product for over two years and announced that it will be launching the product in Spring 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Airbnb to expedite the launch of this product. The company is launching its travel insurance as a paid product in 10 countries. More countries, at least within the European Union, should soon be covered.

Airbnb stacks this paid product on top of its free Aircover booking guarantees. This way, it wants to show that it is already offering a great level of protection but that money can buy guests something extra. It certainly does not hurt that insurance products have comfortable margins and that it is also a good move for Airbnb’s bottom line.

You arrive at your destination and learn that the airline has sent your baggage to the wrong city and you won’t get it back for at least 24 hours. You then check in at the place to stay and find out that the number of bedrooms at the place are less than advertised.

In this situation, AirCover for guests can help you find a new place to stay, depending on availability at comparable pricing. If you purchased travel or reservation insurance with your Airbnb reservation or booking, you can also file a claim with Generali or Europ Assistance SA to get reimbursed for certain extra things you have to buy while waiting for your baggage, like clothing and toiletries.

Airbnb Travel Insurance: A Comprehensive Guide for Short-Term Rental Hosts and Property Managers

In the fast-evolving world of short-term rentals, Airbnb stands out as a frontrunner. This burgeoning market brings with it unique challenges, particularly in terms of safeguarding your property and income. Airbnb travel insurance emerges as a crucial element in this landscape, offering protection beyond the standard Airbnb Host Guarantee.

This article, while focusing on the intricacies of Airbnb travel insurance, also highlights how iGMS, a sophisticated property management tool, can aid in effectively handling these challenges.

Understanding Airbnb Travel Insurance

What is airbnb travel insurance.

Travel insurance, in the Airbnb context, is designed to shield hosts from unforeseen incidents during a guest’s stay. Unlike Airbnb’s Host Guarantee, which primarily covers property damage, travel insurance encompasses a broader range of risks, including trip cancellation coverage, medical and travel emergencies, and even medical evacuation.

Why it’s Essential

Airbnb travel insurance is not just a policy; it’s a fundamental layer of protection for hosts and property managers in the unpredictable world of short-term rentals. This insurance serves as a robust safety net, covering a range of scenarios that could otherwise lead to significant financial losses or legal complications.

  • Dealing with Non-Refundable Trip Costs: One of the most common issues hosts face is unexpected cancellations. These can leave you with vacant properties and lost income, especially if your rental operates under a strict cancellation policy. Travel insurance helps recover these non-refundable trip costs, ensuring that a guest’s last-minute change of plans doesn’t become your financial burden.
  • Coverage for Medical Emergencies: Imagine a scenario where a guest suffers an accident or falls ill while staying at your property. In such cases, the right travel insurance policy can cover the necessary medical treatment expenses. This not only provides financial relief to you and the guest but also enhances the overall guest experience, as they feel more secure knowing that their health emergencies are covered.
  • Property Damage and Liability: Beyond personal health emergencies, there’s always a risk of property damage when hosting. Whether it’s accidental or due to negligence, fixing or replacing damaged items can be costly. Travel insurance that covers property damage protects your assets and ensures that you’re not out of pocket for these expenses.
  • Legal Protection: In today’s litigious society, legal issues can arise from a variety of situations, such as accidents occurring on your property or disputes with guests. Having travel insurance with liability coverage offers a buffer against potential legal fees and settlements, safeguarding your business from the high costs of legal battles.
  • Peace of Mind: Ultimately, having Airbnb travel insurance provides peace of mind. Knowing that you are protected against a range of unforeseen events allows you to focus on providing the best possible experience for your guests, rather than worrying about potential financial pitfalls.

In essence, Airbnb travel insurance is an indispensable tool for hosts and property managers. It ensures that the unpredictable nature of hosting does not impact your financial stability and allows you to operate your rental business with confidence and security.

The Need for Travel Insurance in Today’s Market

Current trends and risks.

The growing demand for Airbnb rentals has increased the risks for hosts. Situations like trip cancellations, family member emergencies, or a natural disaster can lead to significant financial loss if not covered by an appropriate insurance policy.

Real-Life Scenarios

Consider an instance where a guest cancels last minute due to a serious illness. Without travel insurance, you as the host would bear the brunt of the lost income. With a comprehensive policy, these financial setbacks can be mitigated.

Types of Coverage and Policies

Variety of policies available.

Insurance offerings in the market range from basic liability to comprehensive plans, which cover medical emergencies, trip interruptions, and loss of rental income. Companies like Europ Assistance S.A., Generali Global Assistance, and Airbnb Insurance Agency LLC are notable providers in this sector.

Choosing the Right Policy

Selecting the right travel insurance policy involves considering factors like the total trip cost, the likelihood of cancellations, and the specific risks associated with your rental property. Policies are often underwritten by Europ Assistance or similar leading multinational insurers, ensuring reliable and extensive coverage.

Navigating Challenges and Risks

Common challenges.

Hosts without proper insurance face numerous risks, from flight cancellations affecting guests’ arrivals to stolen travel documents. These issues can lead to disputes and financial losses.

Risk Assessment

Evaluating your specific scenario is key. For instance, if your property is in a location prone to natural disasters, ensuring that your policy covers such events is crucial.

Integration with Property Management

Role of property management software.

Tools like iGMS play a critical role in managing travel insurance needs. They help streamline the process of choosing policies, understanding policy details, and even assist in the event of needing to contact insurance providers like Europ Assistance.

iGMS: A Closer Look

iGMS offers features that simplify managing travel insurance policies, from tracking coverage overview pages to integrating insurance costs into overall financial management.

Legal and Compliance Considerations

Navigating legalities.

Understanding and complying with legal requirements, especially for hosts in the European Union, UK, or other specific regions, is vital. Insurance policies should be in line with local laws and Airbnb’s policies.

Insurance and Airbnb’s Policies

Being insured not only provides financial protection but also enhances your credibility on platforms like Airbnb, potentially leading to more bookings and higher trust from guests.

Cost-Benefit Analysis

Understanding costs.

The costs of travel insurance vary, usually based on the rental property’s value, location, and the extent of coverage. Hosts must weigh these costs against the potential financial risks of operating without insurance.

Case Studies and ROI

Real-world examples, especially from hosts who have experienced emergencies like medical evacuations or major property damage, highlight the return on investment when opting for comprehensive travel insurance.

Expert Tips and Best Practices

Industry insights.

Experts often recommend a thorough comparison of policies on comparison sites, considering factors like coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, trip cost, and the specifics of the rental agreement’s cancellation period.

Best Practices for Hosts

Navigating the intricacies of Airbnb travel insurance requires more than just selecting the right policy. It involves a proactive approach to managing various aspects of your rental business. Here are some best practices to ensure you’re maximizing the benefits of your travel insurance:

  • Effective Communication of Insurance Details to Guests: Transparency is key in building trust with your guests. Clearly communicate what your insurance covers and what it doesn’t. For instance, guests should be aware if the policy includes coverage for personal accidents or damage to their belongings during their stay. This information can be included in your listing description, welcome packet, or a pre-arrival email.
  • Maintaining Up-to-Date Records: Keep a meticulous record of all insurance documents, correspondence with the insurance provider, and any claims made. This practice is vital not only for smooth claim processing but also for verifying coverage details if a guest inquires or if an incident occurs. Digital tools or property management software like iGMS can be instrumental in organizing and storing these records efficiently.
  • Understanding the Nuances of Your Policy: Each insurance policy comes with its specific terms and conditions. As a host, you should be well-versed with these details. Pay particular attention to aspects like the maximum coverage amount, deductibles, exclusions, and procedures for filing a claim. For example, if your policy covers ambulance journeys, know the process to initiate such coverage in case of a guest’s medical emergency.
  • Educating Guests on Their Responsibilities: Inform your guests about their responsibilities during their stay in relation to the insurance policy. This includes adhering to safety guidelines, reporting any incidents immediately, and understanding their role in the claim process, if necessary.
  • Regularly Reviewing and Updating Your Insurance Coverage: The short-term rental market is dynamic, and your insurance needs may change over time. Regularly review your policy to ensure it still meets your needs, especially if you make significant changes to your property or if there are changes in local laws that might affect your coverage requirements.
  • Preparing for Emergencies: Have a clear plan for dealing with emergencies, and make sure your guests know what to do as well. This includes having contact information for local emergency services and instructions for evacuation routes or safe areas within your property.
  • Leveraging Professional Advice: Don’t hesitate to consult with insurance professionals to get a better understanding of your policy or to seek advice on the best insurance products for your specific needs. An expert’s perspective can be invaluable in navigating the complex world of insurance.

By following these best practices, you as an Airbnb host can not only ensure a safer and more secure experience for your guests but also protect your investment and maintain a good standing in the rental community.

Should you purchase travel insurance for your vacation rental?

Bill Fink

Vacation rentals booked through Airbnb and its alternatives have become popular holiday destinations for all types of travelers, from extended families staying in large beachfront homes to couples vacationing in swanky city apartments.

But what happens if these rental properties, especially ones worth millions of dollars, get damaged before you arrive or if your plans unexpectedly change, causing you to need to cancel or shorten your stay?

While the exact outcome will depend on the situation, if you purchase travel insurance , you may find you're eligible for compensation.

So how do you know if it's worth the investment before your next trip? TPG dug into the details to determine what standard travel insurance policies may cover you for when staying at home rentals — and when you may want to purchase some additional coverage.

What travel insurance covers for vacation rentals

airbnb travel insurance details

Traditional travel insurance policies offer features that will cover you and your invested travel costs, whether you're staying at a hotel , friend's house or rental property. Although the exact benefits for vacation rentals may vary slightly depending on the policy you choose, there are a few situations that most will cover.

Your vacation is canceled due to sickness, injury or an emergency

Many hotels offer free cancellations until two or three days before arrival so long as you book your rooms with flexible rates. However, this is rarely the case for vacation rentals, which often have strict cancellation policies requiring 30 to 60 days of advance notice to cancel without penalty. Some even go so far as to have completely nonrefundable deposits, regardless of the cancellation circumstances.

Fortunately, there's a workaround to this conundrum if you find yourself in an unexpected situation involving your health or the health of someone close to you: trip cancellation coverage. If you have insurance with trip cancellation coverage and cannot complete your trip as planned due to select health-related issues, you'll be able to recoup up to 100% of your nonrefundable costs.

While the exact cases that are eligible for complete reimbursement vary by policy, know that many pertaining to health are covered. For example, World Nomads ' trip cancellation insurance policy will cover you in the event you need to cancel your vacation, including any stays at home rentals, due to illness, injury or a death in the family.

You have to cut your vacation short due to a medical reason or natural disaster

In addition to helping you out when you need to cancel your entire vacation, insurance can reimburse you for early departure fees when you find yourself needing to cut your vacation rental stay short. Know, though, that you'll need to have a policy offering trip interruption protection to be eligible for this perk.

Covered reasons for ending your stay early will vary from plan to plan, but typically, policyholders can expect reimbursement due to health-related issues and natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires and blizzards. For instance, IMG's travel insurance covers sickness, injury and natural disaster evacuations when cutting vacation rental stays short.

You cannot stay at the rental due to it being uninhabitable

If you book a vacation rental that is not fit for human habitation, then the booking company or owner should refund all your costs. However, there are rare occasions when this does not happen, so it's important to have travel insurance as a backup.

To qualify for reimbursement from your travel insurance provider due to uninhabitable conditions, you'll need to read the fine print of your chosen policy. Allianz , for example, defines uninhabitable as "a natural disaster, fire, flood, burglary or vandalism that has caused enough damage (including extended loss of power, gas or water) to make a reasonable person find their home or destination inaccessible or unfit for use."

Other situations, such as having an unpleasant or dirty vacation rental , would not be enough to trigger this coverage.

Should you have to find another property or cancel your trip completely due to uninhabitable conditions at your original rental, your travel insurance plan will cover the added costs you incur.

What travel insurance won't cover for vacation rentals

airbnb travel insurance details

As you may expect, there are some situations when travel insurance won't cover extra expenses related to stays at rental properties. To have a solid understanding of what to expect, be sure to read the fine print of any insurance product you choose. Only circumstances listed in the policy will be covered. The following are two key reasons why you wouldn't be covered.

You accidentally damage the property during a typical stay

Most travel insurance policies will not cover the costs of damage you incur at a rental property, even if it was done by accident. As a result, you must pay for a replacement or repair to any item you accidentally break or damage, such as a work of art, a garage door or wine glasses. Depending on the item in question, this can quickly add up.

If you have a homeowners or renters insurance policy, know that it may include protection beyond regular limits called "umbrella" coverage, which can help cover damage caused at a rental property. Keep in mind, though, that you'll have to pay your deductible first. Additionally, your home insurance rate may rise if you submit a claim for vacation rental damage.

Should you wish to stick with travel insurance, you may be able to add extra vacation rental coverage to a traditional policy to assist with accidental damage. Faye's travel insurance , for example, has an add-on feature that offers "coverage if you unintentionally damage the vacation rental property you're staying in or its contents, while in-trip." It costs about 10% of what you'll spend on the main policy itself.

You damage the property while hosting a party

Across the board, travel insurance policies are much more strict about damage caused during parties. If you host an unapproved party or event at a rental property and damage any part of the rental, you will be responsible for covering costs associated with repairs and replacements.

Even approved events are not entirely off the hook for any damage caused to the property. Should you decide to use a vacation rental for an approved event like a wedding or family reunion, expect the booking company or owner to require you to purchase an event-specific insurance policy that covers guest liability, home damage and other items that may be specific to the location.

Bottom line

Home rentals can be a great lodging solution when you're on vacation, especially if you're traveling with family or friends. However, the high cost of some vacation properties and the cancellation policies often in place mean you should probably purchase some kind of travel insurance to protect your investment.

Typical travel insurance policies will offer coverage for your vacation rental costs should your trip be canceled or delayed for events covered under the policy, but you may be on the hook for other scenarios. As a result, it's vital you pay careful attention to your policy's terms. Doing so will ensure you know what to expect should you face an unexpected situation while enjoying your temporary home away from home.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellation and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex, for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Coverage for pandemics vary from policy to policy. Some travel insurance companies have specific provisions for pandemic-related cancellations, while others may exclude them entirely.

Sports injuries are often covered under travel insurance, but high-risk or adventure sports might require additional coverage or a special policy.

Travel advisories have different effects on your travel insurance depending on your policy. Traveling to a country already under travel advisory may invalidate your coverage, but if you're already traveling when a travel advisory is announced, you may be covered.

Travel insurance usually covers the cost of emergency medical evacuations to the nearest suitable medical facility, and sometimes back to your home country, if necessary.

Many travel insurance policies provide coverage for the cost of replacing lost or stolen passports during a trip.
